Amos 00:01:30.409 --> 00:01:34.150 shows us people who could not wait for the Sabbath 00:01:34.150 --> 00:01:37.969 to be over so they could get back to the money 00:01:37.969 --> 00:01:42.450 -making ways that they had. And Jesus shows us 00:01:42.450 --> 00:01:46.099 a story about money that asks What are you really 00:01:46.099 --> 00:01:50.540 doing with what you have? Whom are you really 00:01:50.540 --> 00:01:53.659 serving with it? And here's the big idea for 00:01:53.659 --> 00:01:57.519 us. Wealth and possessions that are not always 00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:00.500 evil, but what you do with them shows where your 00:02:00.500 --> 00:02:04.560 heart is. Money and worry, they creep into our 00:02:53.139 --> 00:02:56.240 minds like a strange little virus, even when 00:02:56.240 --> 00:03:00.020 we're supposed to be focused on God. And see, 00:03:00.020 --> 00:03:02.879 that's the reality check though. Wealth and possessions, 00:03:02.939 --> 00:03:07.520 they're not neutral. They don't just sit there 00:03:07.520 --> 00:03:11.120 doing nothing. They pull at our hearts. They 00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:14.259 compete for our loyalty. Just saying. God has completely 00:03:44.639 --> 00:03:48.460 taken care of them without needing to panic about 00:03:48.460 --> 00:03:52.219 their one day off. If they can afford to turn 00:03:52.219 --> 00:03:54.699 down Sunday sales and still be packed every other 00:03:54.699 --> 00:03:59.099 day of the week, it tells you something. They would have them that ended up being 00:04:58.889 --> 00:05:02.569 lighter so that they could end up giving less 00:05:02.569 --> 00:05:05.149 to them in exchange for the money they received. 00:05:05.709 --> 00:05:09.269 They would sell leftovers, acting as if it is 00:05:09.269 --> 00:05:12.389 the best, the premium of the grain, instead of 00:05:12.389 --> 00:05:15.709 realizing it was whatever was left over. And 00:05:15.709 --> 00:05:18.110 they squeezed every penny they could out of other 00:05:18.110 --> 00:05:24.259 people. God says, I will not forget their deeds. 00:05:25.779 --> 00:05:29.180 Judgment was coming. See, that's one way that 00:05:29.180 --> 00:05:32.759 people may use wealth. Selfishly, unjustly, short 00:05:32.759 --> 00:05:35.000 -sightedly, not even worrying that they're doing 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:38.839 it to those who have very little already. But 00:05:38.839 --> 00:05:45.000 in Luke, Jesus tells a strange story. Isn't it 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.480 strange to hear Jesus seemingly glorify the bad 00:05:49.480 --> 00:05:53.120 guy? It's strange because it treats the manager 00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:55.959 who's inept at his job and wasteful with what 00:05:55.959 --> 00:06:01.060 he has and treats him as a model to follow. But 00:06:01.060 --> 00:06:04.800 let's be clear. Jesus was never afraid to take 00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:08.339 someone who was seen as unclean or unworthy and 00:06:08.339 --> 00:06:11.000 use them to try to make a point about how terrible 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:14.319 the good guys, the leaders, were in his day. 00:06:14.660 --> 00:06:19.000 See, we may be okay with Samaritans and tax collectors, 00:06:19.379 --> 00:06:24.149 well... at least one of them. But they were just 00:06:24.149 --> 00:06:29.310 as terrible in his day as the manager. Talking 00:06:29.310 --> 00:06:34.069 about the unworthy manager is a way of showing 00:06:34.069 --> 00:06:37.449 that if he can even do things with what is unworthy 00:06:37.449 --> 00:06:41.449 wealth, if he can still do good things with that, 00:06:41.750 --> 00:06:44.930 how much more should you be able to do when you 00:06:44.930 --> 00:06:48.279 are someone following after God? See, this manager, 00:06:48.459 --> 00:06:51.759 he's about to be fired. So he shrewdly calls 00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:55.000 in his master's clients and he reduces their 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:59.160 debts. Hey, don't worry. I got your back. I'll 00:06:59.160 --> 00:07:01.639 help you out now if you'll help me out later 00:07:01.639 --> 00:07:06.980 down the line. He's dishonest. Yes, that's the 00:07:06.980 --> 00:07:12.639 point. He's still thinking ahead. He uses what 00:07:12.639 --> 00:07:15.980 little he has left. to secure relationships for 00:07:15.980 --> 00:07:18.839 the future and to make sure he even has a future 00:07:18.839 --> 00:07:23.600 at all. And that's the point is to show if a 00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:28.079 corrupt manager can use corrupt money to care 00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:30.540 for other people and then provide for his own 00:07:30.540 --> 00:07:35.560 future, how much more? Why weren't the people 00:07:35.560 --> 00:07:38.660 in Jesus' day who were saying that they followed 00:07:38.660 --> 00:07:42.120 after God and that he was the one leading them? 00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:45.199 Why weren't they able to do the same thing in 00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:49.620 regard to the people and their own future with 00:07:49.620 --> 00:07:52.639 what they were claiming to be good and right? 00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:56.740 They were not caring about the future kingdom 00:07:56.740 --> 00:07:59.839 of God, and they couldn't seem to care about 00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:03.920 the people who were all around them. Jesus presents, 00:08:04.379 --> 00:08:06.939 if even worldly people know how to prepare for 00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:10.160 the future with how they spend money, shouldn't 00:08:10.160 --> 00:08:13.129 God's people be even wiser? in spending money 00:08:13.129 --> 00:08:17.310 for the future. We must use money now in ways 00:08:17.310 --> 00:08:22.029 that echo into eternity, both for people and 00:08:22.029 --> 00:08:25.069 for God's kingdom. See, here's the contrast. 00:08:26.310 --> 00:08:29.810 Amos' people of Israel chased after the short 00:08:29.810 --> 00:08:32.690 -term gains and they were bringing God's judgment. 00:08:33.309 --> 00:08:36.509 The manager in Luke, the dishonest one, for all 00:08:36.509 --> 00:08:39.009 of his faults, at least he looked ahead and was 00:08:39.009 --> 00:08:43.139 praiseworthy for it. But the challenge then comes 00:08:43.139 --> 00:08:47.279 to us. Will we spend money as if this life is 00:08:47.279 --> 00:08:52.679 all there is? Or are we using what we have in 00:08:52.679 --> 00:08:56.919 ways that last forever? Think about Chick -fil 00:08:56.919 --> 00:08:59.820 -A. You know that running joke about how every 00:08:59.820 --> 00:09:03.539 worker smiling has to say, my pleasure. Oh, no, 00:09:03.580 --> 00:09:06.659 I forgot my straw. My pleasure. Oh, I needed 00:09:06.659 --> 00:09:09.519 some Chick -fil -A sauce. My pleasure. And then 00:09:09.519 --> 00:09:11.320 they even have the music videos where they joke 00:09:11.320 --> 00:09:13.799 about it. Oh, no, my tire went flat. But see, 00:10:09.830 --> 00:10:12.149 the good news is that even when God was speaking 00:10:12.149 --> 00:10:14.389 through Amos to people who were clearly doing 00:10:14.389 --> 00:10:17.570 the wrong thing, He isn't only pointing out failure, 00:10:17.769 --> 00:10:21.250 hey, you really messed up there. He saw the greed, 00:10:21.429 --> 00:10:24.090 the impatience, the exploitation in Israel's 00:10:24.090 --> 00:10:28.490 hearts. And yet He spoke because He wanted them 00:10:28.490 --> 00:10:32.350 to turn back to Him. Even when they had to learn 00:10:32.350 --> 00:10:36.149 things the hard way, God's desire was still that 00:10:36.149 --> 00:10:39.210 his people would know him even during the exile, 00:10:39.389 --> 00:10:42.950 even after the exile. The same is true with Jesus. 00:10:43.230 --> 00:10:47.009 He tells a parable about a manager who wasn't 00:10:47.009 --> 00:10:50.350 being wise, but notice he's not closing the door. 00:10:51.190 --> 00:10:53.649 He's opening it because he wants the listeners 00:10:53.649 --> 00:10:56.370 who are ready to hear to take the opportunity 00:10:56.370 --> 00:11:00.129 to change. Jesus gave up the wealth of 00:11:54.139 --> 00:11:58.580 heaven, to walk among us in poverty. Not poverty 00:11:58.580 --> 00:12:02.279 being a carpenter's son per se, but the poverty 00:12:02.279 --> 00:12:06.559 of being a mortal human being. Instead of the 00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:11.120 immortal that he was in heaven, he laid down 00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:15.220 his life to give us eternal riches. And we hear Jesus saying, 00:16:35.259 --> 00:16:37.639 where your treasure is, there your heart will 00:16:37.639 --> 00:16:41.879 be also. So the question is simple. Where's your 00:16:41.879 --> 00:16:44.980 treasure? Because one day you'll look back from 00:16:44.980 --> 00:16:47.700 eternity and realize that every act of generosity, 00:16:48.259 --> 00:16:50.340 everything you gave, every sacrifice you made 00:16:50.340 --> 00:16:54.399 in faith, none of it was wasted.
