You know, every once in a while I do what I call an out of the box show. This one's really out of the box today. But when I do something like this, it's because I think it's going to benefit people out there that listen to this broadcast. 00;02;49;04 - 00;03;11;16 Cary We have a lot of small business owners who have a lot of medical practitioners that listen to this broadcast. I know because I get feedback from I get calls from it all, the rest of it. And one of the big problems that small business owners have is negotiating and dealing with all of the government bureaucracies when it comes time to file taxes, do your compliance, your 401k, you name it, and the government's got its fingers in it. 00;03;11;16 - 00;03;29;19 Cary And if you don't comply, there's a case going up before the Supreme Court right now where a man was fined $31 million for a mistake the IRS made and they refused to turn it around. It's very interesting. So these people could be very difficult to deal with. And you certainly don't want to have to tangle with them if you don't want to. 00;03;29;20 - 00;03;47;05 Cary So in studio with me, Sean Sanborn, he is here to talk about his company, Three Rivers, CPA, how they service just small businesses. They've got a platform out there that's pretty cool. I thought it'd be nice for you guys to hear this anywhere in the country. They can help you. It's really kind of cool. So welcome to the show, Shawn. 00;03;47;12 - 00;03;48;29 Sean Thank you, Carrie. Really appreciate it. 00;03;49;02 - 00;03;52;22 Cary Happy to have you up here. Sean joined us today from where are you at in New Mexico? 00;03;52;23 - 00;03;54;21 Sean I'm in a little town called Farmington, New Mexico. 00;03;54;21 - 00;04;14;07 Cary I know where Farmington is. We're on the radio in Farmington. Thank you. Yeah. So we're down there. How do you like that? There you go. So that's one of our affiliates in Farmington, New Mexico. So talk a little about your experience as a CPA. You and your partner, you know how you came to put this together because it's kind of cool and who you're trying to help out. 00;04;14;17 - 00;04;49;00 Sean Yeah, we we had the opportunity. So my my business partner, Remick Rappleye is a CPA. I myself am a CMA certified management accountant. Not to be confused with certified medical assistant, get that in the hospital world from time to time. So we I came up through the ranks, through working at CPA firms when I was younger and then corporate accounting in in agricultural lending and a whole slew of different financial things got to work in the PowerGen industry and accounting and really built a slew of experience for myself. 00;04;49;08 - 00;05;11;24 Sean And then in the last few years worked for a hospital, a regional hospital, and that was where I met my business partner, Remick Rapley. And we saw a need, you know, just across the board with small businesses, small practices. It, you know, didn't matter if it was a chiropractic office, doctor, office or body shop. These people needed help getting their their books done. 00;05;11;24 - 00;05;25;07 Sean And when it came time to get the taxes prepared, the number of questions that come flowing in and is is staggering. And so we said, you know, we need to have this in the bag, start to finish. We need. 00;05;25;08 - 00;05;47;17 Cary Yeah. You know, it's funny I mentioned that case. I don't if you're familiar with this and I the case revolves around a company that had some offshore accounts and they didn't report them properly initially because they didn't realize they were supposed to. This particular case, they went back, corrected all of it, did the whole nine yards. The maximum fine for these people was be like $35,000. 00;05;48;02 - 00;06;05;09 Cary The IRS is going to hit them up for like $33 million. And it's completely ludicrous. But and it's going for the Supreme Court. And there was a fascinating article on this, The Wall Street Journal and the article in The Wall Street Journal at the end of the article said it's time for for the IRS to be reined in. 00;06;05;18 - 00;06;24;20 Cary Okay. And some of these rules and regulations where they're doing these kinds of things and it's complete overreach. Yeah, I've got some experience with the IRS. We were audited for a number of years and we wound up they actually wound up writing me a check. At the end of the day, we didn't write them a check, although it cost me a fortune to go through the process with my CPAs and attorneys and all the rest of it. 00;06;25;02 - 00;06;43;03 Cary But the point is there's a lot of that overreach and people need to pay attention to this and not fall behind and not put themselves with a red flag because you didn't get your quarterly taxes and you didn't make your end of the year contributions to your 401. K or your account. I know all this because I do this every year. 00;06;43;03 - 00;06;53;01 Cary We go through this and it's just critical that people pay attention to this stuff and stay on top of because if you don't and you get on the radar, that's the last damn place you want to be, right? 00;06;53;01 - 00;07;08;21 Sean Oh, exactly. One, you know, once the notices is out, once you're, you know, in the midst of an audit, it's not that it's too late. But now the world of work, the workload has quadrupled. The amount of time you got to spend on the phone, you got to pull records that, you know, as we like to say, hey, I've slept since then. 00;07;08;21 - 00;07;28;27 Sean It's might be two years old and you're I don't know where that is. I got to go find out. Maybe you've changed CPAs in between that time. You got to get records. And, you know, we said, well, how can we get around this? And it was, you know, we've got to be the ones who built it. So we got to do one of our you know, we do all the normal traditional brick and mortar CPA services like you would expect bookkeeping, bank regs, all that good stuff. 00;07;28;27 - 00;07;45;18 Sean But we said we got to have a service where we say we know that this is right because we did it from day one. So we introduced our subscription service, which was, you know, we'll do the accounting in-house, we'll get your financial reports, but as part of that subscription service, your tax return is done by us and that's not an extra cost. 00;07;45;29 - 00;07;59;09 Sean You know, it's built into your subscription that your returns and usually the owner personal returns are done. So we see all of that from start to finish. And the way I've always told my my tax clients in particular is I don't work for the IRS, I work for you. 00;07;59;16 - 00;08;03;21 Cary I hope not. They get 89,000 new employees. Come. I don't know where. 00;08;03;21 - 00;08;08;13 Sean They're going to. Yeah, Wendy's can't find help. I don't know where the IRS is going to get 80. 00;08;08;13 - 00;08;25;23 Cary So, yeah, they pay a little better than Wendy's. Did you see their health insurance benefits? You probably get a pretty good idea of one of the reasons why they can attract people. But that you know, that's interesting when you know, you talked about that because I know when we went through that audit situation, thank God my wife is meticulous with records. 00;08;26;03 - 00;08;43;27 Cary And we went back and it took us I think it was three weeks. There were three people and I remember we had was spread all over the dining room, the living room everywhere. And we I had I keep a paper calendar, believe it or not, and we went back and matched every receipt for every entertainment because we do a lot of lunches and dinners. 00;08;44;04 - 00;09;01;11 Cary We're in the radio business. Oh, yes, you do. And but we went back and and there was a lot of travel because we had clients all over the country, and this was on the benefits side as well. And we went back and matched every bit of it up, took in two large file boxes, dropped them on the desk of our CPA, and he went, You're kidding. 00;09;01;11 - 00;09;14;28 Cary Said, No, but we had every bit of it. And that's why at the end of the day, they wound up paying us. We didn't owe them, they owed us. But it but it, it if you don't have meticulous records, like you said, it's a nightmare. 00;09;14;28 - 00;09;30;18 Sean It is a nightmare. It really is. And, you know, we always try to maintain those record. That's the whole point of, you know, keeping your files securely in a cloud folder, you know, And when we and when we've run them and we say, No, you have this, I can prove that it's been paid. It's already sitting here. You know, I have it in your file. 00;09;30;18 - 00;09;42;07 Sean Here's a new copy of it. We you know, we've built it, we've put it together. And also we've got, you know, depending on the type of client, we've got eyes on their QuickBooks account online. Hey, you know, we've got the transactions. It's all here. 00;09;42;14 - 00;10;09;06 Cary We're going to come back after break here and talk a little bit more with Sean about how they do this. I'm also could tell you a story about a radio executive whose wife owns a couple of beauty salons and what they're going through with the IRS. This is interesting. Stay tuned. We'll be right back after the break. If you want to reach out to Sean, you can do that at 208-641-9500, 208-641-9500 or the email ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com 00;10;09;06 - 00;10;19;06 Cary Stay tuned, we'll be right back after the break. You're listening to America's health care advocate. Broadcasting here on the HIA radio network. Coast to coast across the USA. We'll be right back. 00;10;21;20 - 00;10;25;27 Music ### 00;10;26;19 - 00;10;43;22 Cary Welcome back. You're listening to America's Healthcare Advocate show broadcasting coast to coast across the fruited plain here on the HIA radio network. You can find out more about us by going to the website Health Radio Dot U.S.. You've got a question, comment. I can help you with something. Send me an email. I'm happy to help you. My producer, Mr. Darren Wilhite. 00;10;43;22 - 00;11;04;07 Cary I'm your host, Cary Hall. In studio with me, Sean Sanborn. His firm, threeriverscpa.com. They are in business to help business. It's really that simple. They're in business to help small business people. You know, if you try to do this stuff yourself, you know, God bless you. Okay. But I think it's suicidal, especially with the way the IRS approaches. 00;11;04;07 - 00;11;22;19 Cary You know, we were talking about this software a minute ago. You're guilty until proven innocent. I'm just tell you straight out, because I've been through this, that's the approach. And, you know, if you don't have somebody that understands this stuff and can stand in with you, if you if you wind up being audited or have some of that situation, I mean, it's absurd. 00;11;22;19 - 00;11;39;14 Cary Some of the things that go on. I have a friend who who is a market manager for a major radio group down in in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His wife owns two beauty parlors. She's been through going around around with the IRS for the last year and a half. They're telling her she didn't pay your taxes from two years ago. 00;11;39;19 - 00;12;05;10 Cary She has the canceled checks and they're still refusing to accept the fact that she paid her taxes. This is the kind of stuff that goes on. You get caught up in that bureaucracy and trying to get out of it can be a nightmare. So that's why having somebody there that can interact and understands how to do it. When we went through our audits, I remember this distinctly because we had an attorney and we had our CPA, and they said, You're not going to meet with anybody, Cary. 00;12;05;10 - 00;12;29;07 Cary You're going nowhere. They handled the whole thing. I never met the auditor. Deneb No, no interaction at all. Okay. That was very smart. All right. Very smart. So there's a reason why it's important to have an expert that knows what they're doing. And Sean's an expert. He and his partner can help you. You can reach them at 208-641-9500, 208-641-9500 It's a subscription service. 00;12;29;07 - 00;12;50;03 Cary It's very reasonable and cost. So, you know, if you're a small business, you can afford to do this and you can have the best, then you know, advice you can get from from people that really understand how to do it. The website is Sandborn essay and below are an essay Sandborn at Three Rivers, CPA Ecom. All right so let's talk so you were talking off here about somebody. 00;12;50;03 - 00;13;06;13 Cary Let's just tell that other story and then we'll get off of some of this IRS. Sure, sure. But I think, again, you know, I just said this to Darren. You know, up here, we got an envelope the other day and there was, you know, from the IRS immediately you're thinking, here we go. Okay. Well, the good news was there was a check for $512. 00;13;06;13 - 00;13;27;12 Cary But but but the point is that that when you get that that letter or that notification, everybody does that. It's like, oh, my God. Oh, yeah, yeah. So and these people, unfortunately do have a reputation for overreach a lot of times. So a little bit about, yeah, you were talking about a gentleman that you worked with and his situation. 00;13;27;12 - 00;13;44;25 Sean Yeah, absolutely. And this man was not only a CPA himself, but an attorney. And he had an ongoing practice, I believe, out of the state of Colorado. And he he focused a lot on continuing professional education, which is how I met him. So he always had a slew of stories. And this was his own story. It wasn't, you know, oh, I had a client who this happened to. 00;13;45;01 - 00;14;01;22 Sean You know, if anyone should know how to get these things filed, you'd think. You'd think. And he got a notice saying that his quarterly payroll taxes hadn't been filed. Oh, he's going to owe, you know, a fine, late, late filing, late submission, all this stuff. He went back, he said, now this is all been filed. This is all been submitted. 00;14;02;09 - 00;14;17;18 Sean And here I'll resubmit a second form just so you can have it Form after form kept coming, he got three or four notices. Come to find out. Finally get on the phone. Well, this is this is just the robot. This is just the software sitting you kicked out. A person hasn't got an. 00;14;17;20 - 00;14;39;07 Cary Exact same thing happened to us a couple of years ago. This is not the odd thing. A different deal with the same thing. And they were letters. They were being sent out automatically saying you hadn't paid when in fact we had and we had changed addresses or something. And, and yeah, so yeah. And that's and people don't realize those are automatically sent out so that you're not dealing with the person in that case, right? 00;14;39;14 - 00;14;58;25 Sean Oh absolutely. Yeah, exactly. A person hasn't had time to catch up to that issue and say, Oh well hit the button. You know, this is actually okay. We just haven't processed a record. So I always tell my clients, listen, you know, don't don't get scared just because you saw the IRS on on on the envelope. And oftentimes this is a it's a simple letter response. 00;14;58;25 - 00;15;16;29 Sean Hey, let me just write a response, clarify the issue on my letterhead. Everything will be okay. But that's why we said, you know, listen, we've got a handle on this from start to finish. We throw the tax return in to your subscription service. Most of the time they say, hey, listen, you know, you're you're on board with us for bookkeeping, quarterly reports, bank req. 00;15;17;11 - 00;15;20;17 Sean When we're done, we're going to prepare the tax return as well. 00;15;20;17 - 00;15;42;24 Cary Yeah. And that's you mentioned something about, you know, personal taxes as well as business tax. If you're if you're an S corp or you're a partnership or you're an LLC, all that stuff ties right back to you personally. Absolutely. And that's that's critical. Okay. And I've been an S corp for, what, 20 years now? And with all of our companies because we have more than one. 00;15;42;24 - 00;16;15;01 Cary But but it's really important because that all ties back into you personally as well as you're not a C Corp. If you're a C Corp is a different situation. We'll talk about that in a minute. But a lot of small businesses are SE corp and unfortunately, you know, there are certain people in the government, especially, you know, in the House and the Senate and in other places that want to take shots at people that that have as corp's because, you know, we make too much money or we're dodging taxes or all these other nonsensical things that you hear when in fact, you know, we pay out more than than the average citizen by, you know, 00;16;15;01 - 00;16;24;24 Cary ten or 15 fold. Absolutely. But having said that, it's critical for you as as that business owner. Also, those taxes are all tied together in one place. 00;16;25;00 - 00;16;45;18 Sean Absolutely. You know, especially like you say, if you've got multiple small businesses or you're maybe just a part owner in another business and you're getting ak1 form from that is great. You know, you want to make sure that that is done correctly. I can tell you, you know, a client that came over to us, two year old, three year old tax return, I did a review and I said, you're an owner in this business. 00;16;45;18 - 00;16;54;25 Sean Why are you getting paid as if you're a consultant for the business? Well, they said that's how I had to do it. I said, Well, they're wrong. You're supposed to get paid this way, and this is supposed to appear on your case. 00;16;54;26 - 00;17;03;03 Cary Because now if you're not in, then you the red flag. Absolutely. You're getting money that you're not paying the proper amount of taxes on. So and that's that's that's where that goes. 00;17;03;03 - 00;17;23;12 Sean Absolutely. I mean, it affects things like your capital basis in your business. And you need people who know what they're doing, you know, and have the resources to say, hey, by the way, you process this payment and you need to know it needs to go this way. That's simple. But you know, the piece of mind for the business owner, you know, Bob's Auto Shop, he doesn't have time to research these things. 00;17;23;12 - 00;17;24;17 Sean They change every. 00;17;24;17 - 00;17;26;15 Cary Year. Oh, the code is ridiculous. 00;17;26;15 - 00;17;37;09 Sean It's constantly changing. And oftentimes it can even be as simple as from one political party to another. Oh, we're now we're going to make changes in this direction. And whether you like them or dislike the changes, it changed. 00;17;37;09 - 00;17;58;15 Cary And now that that's part of that discussion that what I just mentioned a minute ago is that, you know, when when you have the Democrats in office, you know, you're looking for more regulation, a higher taxes and and and and emphasizing, you know, these bureaucracies going after people, there's no other way to say it. Okay. And so, unfortunately, what ends up happening is you have more audits. 00;17;58;15 - 00;18;25;10 Cary You have more people with his shoes in it is what it is. So, again, you know, smart thing to do is have a team of people that can do this and step in for you where you're not the one dealing with these people and doing try to do it yourself on a daily basis. And that would be Shawn Sanborn, Sanborn and his team at Three Rivers, CPA, the website is ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com, ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com. 00;18;25;10 - 00;18;41;15 Cary The phone number 208 641 9500, They can help you anywhere in the country. It doesn't matter where you are. They've got this thing online. You can put it together. They can service you any place in the country. If you want to give them a call, just find out how their program works. We'll be right back after the break. 00;18;42;00 - 00;18;50;25 Cary You're listening to America's health care advocate broadcasting here on the HIA radio network. Coast to coast across the U.S.. 00;18;54;13 - 00;19;12;15 Cary Welcome back. You're listening to America's Healthcare Advocate show broadcasting coast to coast across the U.S. here on the HIA radio network. You can find out more about us by going to the website Health Radio Dot U.S. Health Radio, dot U.S.. My producer, Mr. Darren Willhite. I'm your host, Cary Hall, now. Okay. You're a partner in a business. 00;19;12;15 - 00;19;30;13 Cary Maybe. Maybe you're you know, it's you and your husband. Okay? You're you're the one that take care of the books. Or maybe you've got two partners. The three partners. Look, I do another company I have. Look, instead of trying to explain all this to them and about what Sean’s talking about and what we're going to talk about here in the segment, which is the subscription service and how all of this works. 00;19;30;24 - 00;19;51;11 Cary Go to the podcast platform. That's why they're up there. So go to Google podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker, tune in iHeart, Amazon, Pandora, Stitcher, SoundCloud and YouTube. We're on all of them and they can listen to the whole show and then they can. You know what? That's probably a pretty good idea. That way you don't have to try to convince them or regurgitate this whole thing. 00;19;51;11 - 00;20;22;12 Cary So the website for Sean is sSandborn at Three Rivers CPA dot COM Sanborn spelled s SEANBORN @ Three Rivers, CPA dot com. The phone number 208 641 9500, 208 641 9500. They can take care you anywhere in the country. They've got this all automated. They've got it all done online so they're happy to help you. So let's just talk about how did you come up with this subscription service idea and give us a little idea of how that all works. 00;20;22;17 - 00;20;38;05 Sean Yeah, we you know, after encountering just just even the first few clients, we started to realize that there is trepidation and particularly among small business owners, to think, well, is my CPA going to charge me just because I picked up the phone and say, Hey, weird thing came like a lawyer? Exactly. 00;20;38;10 - 00;20;40;16 Cary Oh, no, it's going to be $300 an hour. 00;20;41;04 - 00;20;43;18 Sean Yeah, I was 15 minutes all around it up to here and. 00;20;43;20 - 00;20;48;03 Cary They round it up. No, that's no joke. But Donna's an attorney. I know how they do this stuff anyway. 00;20;48;17 - 00;21;07;06 Sean And, you know, we said, you know, we want them to have the confidence to say, hey, I know they've got my back. And so, you know, what we do is we meet with the client, we assess their needs still, depending on how much work they need from us on a monthly basis. Yeah, we say, all right, we've figured out the number of hours we anticipate we come up with a fair price. 00;21;07;06 - 00;21;18;08 Sean You know, it could be as low as $350 a month based on the workload. Hey, if you want to do an all your payroll and everything, well, maybe it's it's more in the thousand, 2000, 3000, depending on your work. 00;21;18;08 - 00;21;19;06 Cary This is the size. 00;21;19;06 - 00;21;19;24 Sean Of the company. 00;21;19;24 - 00;21;35;02 Cary Yeah, but, you know, if it's a small outfit, like you said, and maybe all you're doing is processing, you know, a certain number of invoices and money's coming in from the bank account. And you've got two principles to pay 350 to $500. Pretty good range. 00;21;35;02 - 00;21;38;29 Sean Absolutely. And we include the year end tax return. 00;21;39;00 - 00;21;51;16 Cary Now, that part right there changes the whole equation. It does, you know. Yeah, because that you know, the fact that you include that now you're probably getting that at a cost that what we probably typically what you would pay just to get your taxes done. 00;21;51;18 - 00;22;06;16 Sean Absolutely Yeah. And you know and it gives the client the customer, the freedom to know that they can call us when they need us with an issue. We don't consider that a scope of work change. You know, it's a I had a question, had a hey, I want to set up a new bank account or. 00;22;06;16 - 00;22;07;18 Cary Should I do a SEP? 00;22;07;18 - 00;22;07;27 Sean Should it? 00;22;07;27 - 00;22;30;14 Cary Yeah, absolutely. For those of you there that are, you know, if you're, if you're a sub s or instead of doing a for a1k you can do a SEP account and that offsets your taxes, which is a beautiful thing. You know, if you owe $20,000 in taxes, but you can make a $10,000 contribution to see if I'm right or wrong on this to your SEP account, you just cut your tax benefit down by $10,000. 00;22;30;14 - 00;22;33;24 Sean Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. You cut down your your taxable income. 00;22;33;24 - 00;22;34;28 Cary Absolutely. It's amazing. 00;22;34;28 - 00;22;39;06 Sean It is amazing. Okay. And we contract with and it's amazing. 00;22;39;06 - 00;22;55;09 Cary And people don't know that my own son in law, I've got to round around with him because he's got his own company as well. I said, you need to set up a SEP. You're paying $40,000 in taxes. If you set up a SEP, you could offset that by whatever the case may be. Now you've got to take care of your employees as well. 00;22;55;19 - 00;23;16;04 Cary But in a proportionate manner. If you're if it's 30% of your salary or 20% or whatever it is, then you've got to do the same thing for them. But if you've got two or three people in your company, we did it four years at Benefits By Design, and our people loved it and it was great for them and it wasn't for one K and it wasn't regulated like a4a1k. 00;23;16;04 - 00;23;18;10 Cary This is the kind of stuff where you can educate people. 00;23;18;14 - 00;23;36;23 Sean Absolutely. And we contract with a certified financial planner. So if we if they say, hey, you know, I really want to talk about long term investments and I want to go and we say, well, you know what? We've got a guy for that. And that has been a major driving force for us is say, you know, you can't be expected to know everything all the time. 00;23;36;23 - 00;23;39;12 Cary Every especially when you're talking about these kinds of. 00;23;39;12 - 00;24;00;16 Sean They change all the time. And you we're constantly learning new things. You know, we we have requirements for continuing professional education to maintain our certifications, our licensure. I'm I'm also an enrolled agent, which is where my tax came from. And we said, you know, this is so much to know. Even we can't carry this around in our heads all the time. 00;24;00;16 - 00;24;11;06 Sean We need to be able to reach out to professionals across the country on a moment's notice and say, Hey, you know what? You've got this unique estate return with this unique financial situation. 00;24;11;06 - 00;24;12;12 Cary You're in California. 00;24;12;22 - 00;24;14;23 Sean You're in California. 00;24;14;23 - 00;24;18;11 Cary We got help. You all escaped. But anyway. Yeah. 00;24;18;26 - 00;24;23;04 Sean Yeah, exactly. Well, there's a there's a big wave of even leaving that state right now. 00;24;23;04 - 00;24;23;17 Cary Huge. 00;24;23;22 - 00;24;26;24 Sean Yeah. And that's having its own tax issues. You have people I know. 00;24;26;24 - 00;24;44;29 Cary My kids just moved here. My our oldest daughter just moved here. And, you know, their taxes. I mean, their taxes drop like a rock. They live in Kansas now. It's a little bit different than it was in California. It truly yeah, it makes a big difference. Talk a little bit about the ERP ERM system that you implemented for across all industries. 00;24;44;29 - 00;25;03;08 Cary So, you know, they do a lot of work with people that are medical professionals. You're a doctor, you're a chiropractor, you're a physical therapist, you're phlebotomist, you're an infusion lab. Any of those kinds of businesses they have a lot of experience with, but they also do a lot of other things. So talk about those two pieces, the ERP and the ERM. 00;25;03;09 - 00;25;29;06 Sean Absolutely. So ERP, ERM, meaning enterprise resource planning software, enterprise resource management software. And you know, we have experience with certain specific ones without listing them. But across the board there are there are a whole slew of platforms for enterprise resource management. And perhaps, you know, you're a mid-sized business, you know, and so you say, Well, I want to manage my financials in a system where I, you know, it's all encompassing. 00;25;29;13 - 00;25;45;08 Sean You know, if you're small enough that you're just using something like QuickBooks Online, that's excellent. That's just fine. But if you are a mid-sized range company or maybe even larger and you have a finance team who's already doing your financial work and you're trying to get on a new system because your platform is outdated, that takes a huge strain. 00;25;45;08 - 00;26;08;07 Sean And we have seen we both have perfect personal work experience as consultants with these systems. And so we say, well, we can come in and facilitate whether it's even just between this new platform coming in and being the third party between your financial team and the new platform, we can immediate, we can facilitate and we can educate your team. 00;26;08;13 - 00;26;14;14 Sean Now, if you're a smaller business and you say, Well, I just need someone who can set this up for me, absolutely. We'll take that on as a project. 00;26;14;20 - 00;26;26;29 Cary Yeah. So it kind of sounds to me like, you know, what we've got here is a one stop shop. That's the goal. You guys can do as much or as little as they need you to do. And that's the beauty of this. You don't have to take a whole. You've got a menu, pick what you. 00;26;26;29 - 00;26;28;01 Sean Like, pick what you need. 00;26;28;01 - 00;26;48;22 Cary Yeah. And again, you know, I keep going back to this, but the fact that you're it's a subscription based service, which means, you know, hey, we've got a question about this. If I buy if I buy a pickup truck and it is a three quarter ton truck and and it it it's got a six foot bed, am I going to get it? 00;26;49;03 - 00;26;50;20 Cary Is there a write off I can get for that. 00;26;50;24 - 00;26;52;13 Sean Absolutely. You know, and. 00;26;52;24 - 00;26;53;23 Cary The 179. 00;26;54;00 - 00;26;55;23 Sean Oh yeah. You can take a 179 and actually. 00;26;55;28 - 00;27;10;08 Cary Explain it because I bought trucks for years and I always get to write it off and this is why. But explain this again, I'd give you an idea of the obscure rules, but something you can take advantage of if you don't know this stuff. That's why you have people like just talk about that rule. 00;27;10;11 - 00;27;15;00 Sean Yeah, well, you know, and in that same scenario, you have to look at it in this way. Your business bought the truck, right? 00;27;15;00 - 00;27;16;22 Cary That's it. Well, it's my but that's how I always find it. 00;27;16;23 - 00;27;33;10 Sean So company business bought the truck and you have the option up to certain thresholds that they do change a little bit. Not enough to affect a purchase of a truck They're in the millions a section 179 depreciation deduction where you take the full cost of the truck that year, which could be 70,000. 00;27;33;20 - 00;27;35;16 Cary I just bought a new Dodge Ram. It's 85. 00;27;35;16 - 00;27;38;23 Sean $85,000. Yep. Right off the bottom line. 00;27;39;02 - 00;27;47;26 Cary And shaking his head. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But but I got and by the way, the bed has to be six feet or longer. Who would know that? Who would. 00;27;47;26 - 00;27;48;12 Sean Know that? 00;27;48;12 - 00;28;00;02 Cary You know, I exactly think about that. Okay. You know, I got to buy this brand new truck. I put it under the company and I get the write off on it because the depreciation I because I bought it underneath that. Right. 00;28;00;03 - 00;28;13;04 Sean Exactly. And, you know, even if you're just starting a new business and you say, well, I've got this truck that I bought personally three years ago, but I use it for my business. Well, you contributed to the business. Yeah. And now you've got either ongoing depreciation or deduction. 00;28;13;04 - 00;28;35;20 Cary And these are the thing. This is why this is part of why I'm doing this show today is because I've I've lived this for the last 20 some years with my own businesses. And I know what this is like and having somebody there that you can pick up the phone and call and they can help you and advise you before you do something, it's going to wind up being a problem for you or cost you money or do something. 00;28;35;20 - 00;28;51;27 Cary Not understanding that if you'd done this, if you bought the truck with the six foot bed, you know, as opposed to the Jeep truck or whatever it is, that you could have gotten the write off over a certain weight and certain size of the truck. And what a difference that would have made of taxes. So this is all stuff that's important for people to know. 00;28;52;09 - 00;29;20;03 Cary They're happy to help you. It's a one stop shop. They've got it all. They can help you anywhere in the country. The website is ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com that Sanborn is spelled s a n b o r n the phone number 208 641 9500, 208 641 9500. You're listening to America's Healthcare Advocate broadcasting here on the HIA Radio network, Coast to Coast across the USA. Once again, that website is ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com 00;29;43;00 - 00;30;03;20 Cary Welcome back. You're listening to America's Healthcare Advocate Show, broadcasting coast to coast across the USA. Here on the HIA radio network, you can find out more about us by going to the website America's Health Care Advocate dot com or Health Radio dot U.S. Health Radio dot U.S.. My producer Mr. Darin Willhite I'm your host Cary Hall in studio with me, Sean Sanborn in here from New Mexico. 00;30;03;20 - 00;30;25;16 Cary We're happy to have in studio today. I came here to talk about what they do with small business. And like I said, this is an out of the box show. We're not talking about health care this weekend or health insurance or any health real issues. But I get a lot of interaction with a lot of businesses, small businesses, medium sized businesses, etc., that really struggle with this whole issue of accounting and dealing with their tax issues and planning. 00;30;25;16 - 00;30;43;21 Cary It's like that discussion we just had about the 179. If I hadn't heard about that, I wouldn't have known it. I don't know where I read it or what it was, but I started buying trucks. After that. I never bought anything else because got to write the whole thing off. You could also do it with certain SUVs, so it said Obscure a little piece of tax code that lets you write off. 00;30;43;21 - 00;31;03;07 Cary In my case, this truck was 85 grand. I wrote the whole thing. You know, I was able to take that depreciation upfront. That's a big deal. But you're not going to know that stuff if you don't have somebody that's an expert. That's what Sean and his team do. The website is ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com, spelled s e a n s a b r n @ Three Rivers, CPA com, ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com. 00;31;03;07 - 00;31;32;12 Cary The phone number 208 641 9500. It doesn't cost anything to call them and say, Hey, this is our problem or we're doing this, but we're not comfortable with it, or we don't know or we're not doing anything. We don't give them a call to 208 641 9500. They're happy just to chat with you and help you. So to illustrate some of the things that you do that are different, you're doing a thing now that revolves around medical care and this is kind of in the health care wheelhouse. 00;31;32;21 - 00;31;48;05 Cary This for practitioners that are running certain types of clinics. Talk about this program you've got and how you're doing this. This is pretty interesting stuff. This is a very niche thing, but it just illustrates how they're branching out to help people in all different types of business. 00;31;48;05 - 00;31;57;03 Sean John Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you know, just like the world of tax code, there is a amazing amount of complexity to the world of health care, but you would. 00;31;57;03 - 00;32;04;18 Cary Know that because you've worked in hospitals and worked in medical for a very long time and it deals with CMS and we're right back to the government again. 00;32;04;20 - 00;32;20;06 Sean IG's Exactly. And you know, different day people. And you know, just like I said before, you know, hey, look, I'm an accounting and tax professional. I can't carry the tax code in my head. I have the means to research individual items. But, you know, you got to keep up with this stuff all the time and people can't be expected. 00;32;20;06 - 00;32;23;20 Sean Likewise with medical practices, this billing and coding can be a real issue. 00;32;23;21 - 00;32;30;10 Cary Oh, and if you don't do it right and CMS decides that you've committed fraud, we're back to the audit game. 00;32;30;10 - 00;32;46;19 Sean Back to the audit game again. You know, you could lose a lot. And so, you know, and even just as simple as saying, well, am I leaving money on the table? Have I billed encoded properly for everything I'm doing? Am I leaving out the proper coding to maximize my income? I mean, we have we have a right to earn an income here. 00;32;46;19 - 00;33;05;20 Sean And if you're even just a small medical practice, you know, perhaps you're using the wrong code for a particular medical service. And if you'd used the proper one, you would have increased your recovery by, you know, 30%. And so, you know, we are more than happy to take any call from a medical practice that just wants a free review. 00;33;06;06 - 00;33;10;23 Sean Hey, just let us review your billing and coding for the last period of time and we'll see if you leave in money. 00;33;10;23 - 00;33;30;01 Cary On the table. I'll tell you a story. We had a client in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was a very well-respected, renowned doctor, and he did gene therapy and he helped when someone was having a cancer surgery or they were having, you know, whatever issue was genetically related, he would go in and do the research on that person, say, well, they're going to reject this. 00;33;30;01 - 00;33;56;26 Cary They're going to accept this. They can do this, they can do that, do something else. And he had he had a lot of money and he was very successful. He wasn't billing properly and they shut him down. He lost his entire practice. And I know that because the CEO of the hospital that he was consulting for told me this is worse than you think it is because he will not be able to get another job working in another hospital, because when you lose that certification, it's like a black mark against you. 00;33;56;26 - 00;33;59;20 Cary And going forward, I mean, this stuff is serious is what I'm trying to say. 00;33;59;20 - 00;34;16;21 Sean Oh, yeah. I mean, it's it's not like, you know, say, for example, if I my if I let my professional license, my enrolled agent status lapse and I didn't do that work for a couple of years, I could go back, retest and get it again, you know, but these things, particularly in the medical world, you lose that. Good luck getting it back. 00;34;16;28 - 00;34;28;20 Sean You know, as you say, with the black mark against you, it's it's across the board. And, you know, these professionals maybe some of the most intelligent people in the country in the world, but they don't have the time. 00;34;28;20 - 00;34;45;18 Cary Well, not only that, but, you know, I'm going to fiddle a lot of doctors out. The doctors for typically are the worst business managers. And I'm sorry, just ah, I've dealt with enough of them to know they're wonderful what they do, but they need to leave the business side to somebody that understands how to do it and watch been And a lot of doctors now have managers. 00;34;45;18 - 00;35;02;28 Cary That's one of the reasons why they have them, is to be able to make these things work. But if it's a small practice, even if it's a medium sized practice, you know, this this particular piece that they're doing, where they're actually doing the coding and the billing for you so they know they've got it handled the whole nine yards, that's a whole different thing. 00;35;03;05 - 00;35;29;05 Sean Absolutely. I mean, when you it's all about ultimately and I've you know, I've had this discussion with my partner multiple times and said, what is our goal to make your life better, to make your business better because you need to sleep at night. We all need to rest easy knowing that we've worked our hardest in our own field and why why worry about things that you don't have the bandwidth to take the time to become an expert in coding and billing. 00;35;29;05 - 00;35;30;19 Sean You're a doctor, for goodness sake. 00;35;31;11 - 00;35;50;13 Cary You know, there's that. There's a saying in business called work on the business side in the business. And that's exactly I used to. I had to preach that to myself for years, work on the business side. In the business, if you get caught up doing all trying to do, oh, I can do QuickBooks Online or my wife can do QuickBooks on the Line or my partner GET Yeah, you can. 00;35;50;24 - 00;36;10;04 Cary Okay. And then there's all the issues with Did you do it right? And now come tax filing time and did you know that you could buy that SUV or that truck and write off an $80,000, $60,000? What did you purchase or in this case, the medical situation where you've got a professional, that this is all they do? You guys handle all the billing and coding. 00;36;10;04 - 00;36;16;21 Cary You get that coding wrong. Those CPT codes for Medicare, it's the same story as the IRS. You're in trouble. 00;36;16;21 - 00;36;17;10 Sean You're in trouble. 00;36;17;10 - 00;36;31;21 Cary And they're going to come in and audit you. Believe me, when they ordered you, they will find something they wouldn't. They're going to make sure that they make their day one way or the other. And I think it's important for people understand that. I really appreciate your coming in today. And, you know, we're going to get this up on the podcast platform. 00;36;31;21 - 00;36;53;09 Cary I think we're going to get a lot of people that are going to find it interesting if you want to reach out to him and his partner at their firm. The phone numbers 208 641 9500, 208 641 9500. You can reach them on the website. ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com, So you've got a lot of stuff up the website, right, that talks about all the stuff that you guys do. 00;36;53;14 - 00;36;53;19 Cary Yeah. 00;36;53;19 - 00;37;02;20 Sean And we're building that website out all the time, you know, and adding our list of services, subscriptions, you know, even just personal tax returns, if that's all you need done, let us. 00;37;02;20 - 00;37;17;19 Cary Know. So there's a menu. You don't have to do it all. You can do some of it. You can start with some of it and want to do more, whatever the case may be, You can make all that work. Once again, the website is ssanborn@threeriverscpa.com the phone number 208 641 9500. 00;37;18;01 - 00;37;33;19 Cary Now I leave you with this thought from Albert Einstein, the one who follows the crowd. We usually get no further than the crowd. The one who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been. Remember, friends. It's a funny thing about life. If you refuse to accept anything but the very best, you most often get it. 00;37;33;26 - 00;37;43;28 Cary Thank you for listening to America's Healthcare advocate broadcasting on the HIA radio network. Coast to coast across the USA, Goodbye America.
