I like that. I 00:02:42.009 --> 00:02:44.069 grew up in a church where that wasn't the case. 00:02:44.129 --> 00:02:46.710 We were really known for what we were against 00:02:46.710 --> 00:02:50.789 more than anything else. But I like the positive 00:02:50.789 --> 00:02:54.699 side of that, that this ministry expresses. What 00:02:54.699 --> 00:02:58.520 are you for? Some believers think that spiritual 00:02:58.520 --> 00:03:03.699 living is measured by what you're against or 00:03:03.699 --> 00:03:09.460 by some list of don'ts that you obey. But in 00:03:09.460 --> 00:03:13.060 fact, true spiritual living is better measured 00:03:13.060 --> 00:03:19.520 by what we do. Spirituality, you see, is not 00:03:19.520 --> 00:03:23.870 keeping a list of don'ts or have -tos. Spirituality 00:03:23.870 --> 00:03:30.909 is walking in the Holy Spirit. Spirituality is 00:03:30.909 --> 00:03:37.229 living in the liberty of love. Spirituality is 00:03:37.229 --> 00:03:40.949 enjoying the freedom that comes to us in Jesus 00:03:40.949 --> 00:03:47.270 Christ. Walking by the Holy Spirit produces certain 00:03:47.270 --> 00:03:52.669 marks of a love -filled life. The last time we 00:03:52.669 --> 00:03:54.750 were together, we studied the fruit of the Spirit, 00:03:54.810 --> 00:03:57.110 and we said that probably the best understanding 00:03:57.110 --> 00:04:00.289 of that text is that love is the fruit of the 00:04:00.289 --> 00:04:03.590 Spirit, and that the other eight qualities that 00:04:03.590 --> 00:04:07.909 are mentioned there flow out of love. Walking 00:04:07.909 --> 00:04:11.969 by the Spirit produces the marks of a love -filled 00:04:11.969 --> 00:04:15.770 life. What I'm saying by that is that one who 00:04:15.770 --> 00:04:20.540 is truly spiritual will do what Paul says. in 00:04:20.540 --> 00:04:23.720 these five verses. In the first place, he will 00:04:23.720 --> 00:04:27.920 restore the fallen. The situation that Paul has 00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:31.779 in mind here is of someone who has suddenly been 00:04:31.779 --> 00:04:37.680 overtaken by what he calls a trespass. The word 00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:41.120 trespass means to step out of line or to step 00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:45.379 over the line. We talked about the word walk 00:04:45.379 --> 00:04:48.860 in the Spirit at the end of chapter 5, verse 00:04:48.860 --> 00:04:52.680 25. the last time, and we said that the word 00:04:52.680 --> 00:04:57.519 walk there means to walk the line. Paul says 00:04:57.519 --> 00:05:00.860 there's the possibility for any of us to step 00:05:00.860 --> 00:05:05.560 over the line, to get out of line, and to trespass. 00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:10.660 Now I wonder why Paul uses the illustration that 00:05:10.660 --> 00:05:14.339 he does in the context of the book of Galatians. 00:05:15.259 --> 00:05:18.040 The Galatians were facing this teaching about 00:05:18.040 --> 00:05:22.470 legalism, you remember. I think Warren Wearsby 00:05:22.470 --> 00:05:25.410 captures it pretty well. When he asks that same 00:05:25.410 --> 00:05:28.649 question, why does Paul use this illustration 00:05:28.649 --> 00:05:32.810 that is of stepping out of line? He goes on to 00:05:32.810 --> 00:05:35.610 say, because nothing reveals the wickedness of 00:05:35.610 --> 00:05:40.689 legalism better than the way that legalists treat 00:05:40.689 --> 00:05:46.269 those who have sinned. If you have been around 00:05:46.269 --> 00:05:49.230 much legalism in your life, you understand exactly 00:05:49.230 --> 00:05:53.439 what he is saying. How does one who is walking 00:05:53.439 --> 00:05:58.160 in the Spirit respond when someone trespasses? 00:05:59.100 --> 00:06:01.759 We'll see how love is manifested in what he says 00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:05.360 to do. In the first place he says, the one who 00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:10.220 is spiritual will seek to restore. The word restore 00:06:10.220 --> 00:06:14.899 here means to surgically put in place, or it 00:06:14.899 --> 00:06:18.399 is used in the Gospels for the cleaning of the 00:06:18.399 --> 00:06:21.860 fishing nets. the repairing of the fishing nets. 00:06:23.240 --> 00:06:26.839 To restore then means that one who is spiritual 00:06:26.839 --> 00:06:30.339 will seek to lift up the fallen and to return 00:06:30.339 --> 00:06:35.699 him to health, to return him to usefulness and 00:06:35.699 --> 00:06:40.600 fruitfulness in the things of God. One who is 00:06:40.600 --> 00:06:43.720 spiritual will seek to help the one who has fallen 00:06:43.720 --> 00:06:47.259 to come back to the place of walking by the Spirit, 00:06:47.399 --> 00:06:52.620 walking in the line of the Spirit. In other words, 00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:56.079 the one who is spiritual will not beat up on 00:06:56.079 --> 00:06:59.540 the one who has fallen with accusations and heap 00:06:59.540 --> 00:07:04.240 on shame. One who is spiritual will not hold 00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:08.939 over the one who has fallen reproach and bring 00:07:08.939 --> 00:07:14.399 him public censure and guilt, but rather he will 00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:18.060 seek to lift up the one who has fallen. And notice 00:07:18.060 --> 00:07:22.019 how he is to do this. And so whenever 00:08:17.970 --> 00:08:22.290 we are about this important business of restoring 00:08:22.290 --> 00:08:26.509 the fallen, it is vital that we guard ourselves 00:08:26.509 --> 00:08:33.950 lest we be overtaken by temptation. Jesus gives 00:08:33.950 --> 00:08:36.450 us a wonderful illustration himself of what it 00:08:36.450 --> 00:08:39.529 means to restore the fallen. You remember the 00:08:39.529 --> 00:08:42.990 woman who was taken in adultery in John chapter 00:08:42.990 --> 00:08:46.820 8? And how the legalists brought her to Jesus 00:08:46.820 --> 00:08:50.000 and said, here's what the law demands, she's 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:57.399 to be stoned to death. Jesus stooped down and 00:08:57.399 --> 00:09:01.019 began to write in the dirt. He doesn't tell us 00:09:01.019 --> 00:09:05.500 what he wrote. I think what Jesus began to write 00:09:05.500 --> 00:09:14.940 was the Ten Commandments. And then it says, He 00:09:14.940 --> 00:09:20.259 said to them, you who are without sin, you cast 00:09:20.259 --> 00:09:24.620 the first stone. And he stooped down and started 00:09:24.620 --> 00:09:30.320 writing again. And it says that they began to 00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:33.580 slip out from that place, from the oldest to 00:09:33.580 --> 00:09:39.039 the youngest to leave. And then Jesus restored 00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:42.639 her. He did not condone her sin. Do not misunderstand 00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:46.259 what is said there in the text. But Jesus restored 00:09:46.259 --> 00:09:50.259 her and forgave her. It seems to me that He gave 00:09:50.259 --> 00:09:53.820 us a wonderful example of how we are to gently, 00:09:54.460 --> 00:09:59.779 meekly, cautiously, for our own sake, restore 00:09:59.779 --> 00:10:06.460 those who have fallen. Burdens are a 00:10:42.379 --> 00:10:46.740 universal reality. Everybody has them. It reminds 00:10:46.740 --> 00:10:51.139 me of a story I read this week of a young Scotsman 00:10:51.139 --> 00:10:54.399 who left home and went to the city and lived 00:10:54.399 --> 00:10:58.779 in a flat. And after some months he went back 00:10:58.779 --> 00:11:00.799 home and his mother said, well, how was it? How 00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:02.860 do you like living in the city? What are your 00:11:02.860 --> 00:11:05.759 neighbors like? And he said, well, my neighbors 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:09.039 are fine, but they're a little strange. She said, 00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:11.980 well, what do you mean by that? He said, well, 00:11:12.039 --> 00:11:15.379 the one on the one side of me continually bangs 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:20.039 his head against the wall. And the lady on the 00:11:20.039 --> 00:11:23.840 other side of me moans and weeps all day long. 00:11:25.220 --> 00:11:26.779 And his mother said, well, that must be very 00:11:26.779 --> 00:11:29.179 difficult for you to deal with. He said, yes, 00:11:29.179 --> 00:11:32.299 it is. So I just stay in my flat and play the 00:11:32.299 --> 00:11:40.039 bagpipes all day. They're all kinds of burdens. 00:11:42.379 --> 00:11:46.600 We're to bear one another's burdens. The word 00:11:46.600 --> 00:11:48.940 burden here means an excessive load, something 00:11:48.940 --> 00:11:53.139 that's overwhelming. I'll tell you something, 00:11:53.500 --> 00:11:58.220 burden -bearing is a great ministry. The fact 00:11:58.220 --> 00:12:01.059 is though that you and I cannot bear everyone's 00:12:01.059 --> 00:12:05.919 burdens, can we? We cannot bear everyone's burdens. 00:12:06.159 --> 00:12:09.279 But that isn't what we're called to do here as 00:12:09.279 --> 00:12:14.120 spiritual people. We're called to bear one another's 00:12:14.120 --> 00:12:18.919 burdens. One another's burdens. In other words, 00:12:19.320 --> 00:12:22.679 we are called to bear the burdens of those with 00:12:22.679 --> 00:12:30.080 whom we are in relationship. That shows how important 00:12:30.080 --> 00:12:34.059 it is that we be in relationships. And this helps 00:12:34.059 --> 00:12:36.740 reflect why we say in our vision statement as 00:12:36.740 --> 00:12:39.919 we do that we want to be a church where we grow 00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:42.860 deep in our relationships with Christ and with 00:12:42.860 --> 00:12:49.899 one another. Occasionally, someone will complain, 00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:53.700 no one's bearing my burden with me. And the first 00:12:53.700 --> 00:12:55.860 question that must always come to mind is, well, 00:12:55.860 --> 00:12:59.659 who are you in relationship with? Have you taken 00:12:59.659 --> 00:13:03.669 time? to be with others and to grow deep with 00:13:03.669 --> 00:13:06.429 them so they understand and know your burdens. 00:13:08.429 --> 00:13:11.110 You can't be expected to bear everyone's burdens, 00:13:11.210 --> 00:13:13.929 but we are to bear one another's burdens. I have come to have much 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:25.210 joy and comfort in your love Because the hearts 00:14:25.210 --> 00:14:28.070 of the saints have been refreshed through you, 00:14:28.070 --> 00:14:33.029 brother. That word refreshed means to be reinvigorated. 00:14:35.210 --> 00:14:38.110 The hearts of the saints have been reinvigorated, 00:14:38.230 --> 00:14:42.330 have been renewed to their labor because of you. 00:14:42.470 --> 00:14:45.529 And Paul included himself in that group that 00:14:45.529 --> 00:14:49.690 Philemon had ministered to. In other words, we 00:15:31.580 --> 00:15:37.080 have to be strong in the Spirit so that our lives 00:15:37.080 --> 00:15:41.440 can show the fruit of love by our bearing the 00:15:41.440 --> 00:15:46.299 burdens of others around us. There's a final 00:15:46.299 --> 00:15:48.820 mark of one who is walking in the Spirit in verses 00:15:48.820 --> 00:15:51.519 three through five. It's a little bit of a different 00:15:51.519 --> 00:15:53.740 twist. He says the one who is walking in the 00:15:53.740 --> 00:15:57.940 Spirit will test his own actions. In other words, 00:15:58.279 --> 00:16:03.899 love, the fruit of the Spirit, will cause a Spirit 00:16:03.899 --> 00:16:06.559 -filled believer to check his own motives and 00:16:06.559 --> 00:16:10.419 his own responsibilities and not be comparing 00:16:10.419 --> 00:16:14.480 himself with others. Paul says that these Galatians 00:16:14.480 --> 00:16:18.789 in verse 26 of chapter 5 were being boastful, 00:16:18.850 --> 00:16:21.750 challenging one another and envying one another. 00:16:23.169 --> 00:16:25.470 In my reading about the Galatians, I came to 00:16:25.470 --> 00:16:28.309 understand really for the first time in the last 00:16:28.309 --> 00:16:30.470 few months that the Galatians were descendants 00:16:30.470 --> 00:16:35.730 of the Gauls who migrated into this part of Asia 00:16:35.730 --> 00:16:40.669 Minor four, five hundred years before Paul lived. 00:16:41.830 --> 00:16:43.870 Well, the Gauls are also the descendants of the 00:16:43.870 --> 00:16:49.779 Celts, of the Celts, the Irish. If you know anything 00:16:49.779 --> 00:16:52.240 about Irish, you know that people who are Irish 00:16:52.240 --> 00:16:55.059 tend to compare themselves with others and be 00:16:55.059 --> 00:16:57.460 boastful and proud. And I say that because that's 00:16:57.460 --> 00:17:00.740 my own heritage. When I think of these words, 00:17:00.899 --> 00:17:04.640 I think of a typical Irish pub and the kinds 00:17:04.640 --> 00:17:09.099 of braggings and boastful sayings that go on 00:17:09.099 --> 00:17:14.500 in the context of those men. Paul is writing 00:17:14.500 --> 00:17:16.880 to these people who must have had the same kind 00:17:16.880 --> 00:17:19.039 of character qualities, and he says look if you're 00:17:19.039 --> 00:17:23.119 walking in the spirit You're not going to be 00:17:23.119 --> 00:17:25.599 bragging and boasting over others. You're not 00:17:25.599 --> 00:17:27.940 going to be comparing yourself with them and 00:17:27.940 --> 00:17:30.579 putting them down You're going to look after 00:17:30.579 --> 00:17:33.500 your own responsibilities and test your own actions 00:17:33.500 --> 00:17:38.099 You will not scrutinize others either comparing 00:17:38.099 --> 00:17:42.140 yourself favorably to them or criticizing them 00:17:43.109 --> 00:17:48.150 You will not suppose that you are something when 00:17:48.150 --> 00:17:52.450 in fact you're nothing. Paul is saying here that 00:17:52.450 --> 00:17:55.049 each one of us has his own assignment from the 00:17:55.049 --> 00:18:01.049 Lord, his own journey in the plan of God. And 00:18:01.049 --> 00:18:04.309 each one of us is to live humbly and contentedly 00:18:04.309 --> 00:18:08.769 with God's sovereignly assigned place and parameters 00:18:08.769 --> 00:18:13.500 in our lives. We're not to compare. not to complain, 00:18:14.519 --> 00:18:18.839 nor to gloat. Indeed, Paul says to the Romans, 00:18:19.440 --> 00:18:22.000 each one of us shall give a count of himself 00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:27.839 to God. Every day and every hour that you and 00:18:27.839 --> 00:18:33.079 I live, we're walking down a trail, leaving marks 00:18:33.079 --> 00:18:37.940 where we have walked. The marks that our lives 00:18:37.940 --> 00:18:41.039 leave behind will either indicate that we are 00:18:41.039 --> 00:18:45.579 in subjection to the flesh or that we are walking 00:18:45.579 --> 00:18:52.920 by the Spirit. Which marks your life? The works 00:18:52.920 --> 00:18:58.740 of the flesh or the fruit of the Spirit? You 00:18:58.740 --> 00:19:02.140 see, ultimately the choice is yours because we 00:19:02.140 --> 00:19:04.480 are the ones who decide either to live in the 00:19:04.480 --> 00:19:08.349 energy and out of the lusts and desires of that 00:19:08.349 --> 00:19:13.109 flesh that is within us all. Or we're the ones 00:19:13.109 --> 00:19:17.029 who decide to yield and surrender to the Lordship 00:19:17.029 --> 00:19:21.710 of Christ and to choose to depend upon the Holy 00:19:21.710 --> 00:19:26.029 Spirit day by day. And as we make that decision, 00:19:27.109 --> 00:19:29.470 then the life of Jesus begins to flow through 00:19:29.470 --> 00:19:33.910 us and the fruit of love. I pray that you will show us, 00:20:19.839 --> 00:20:21.880 each one of us, what it means to walk by the 00:20:21.880 --> 00:20:26.019 Spirit.
