The series examined 00:00:21.760 --> 00:00:24.440 the origins of Christianity and its development 00:00:24.440 --> 00:00:28.980 as a world religion. The first segment was dedicated 00:00:28.980 --> 00:00:32.560 primarily to the life and times of Jesus. Perhaps 00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:36.770 some of you saw it. The contributing scholars 00:00:36.770 --> 00:00:40.049 included recognized theologians from liberal 00:00:40.049 --> 00:00:43.210 schools of religion and seminaries across the 00:00:43.210 --> 00:00:47.789 country. Nearly all of them, I believe, are associated 00:00:47.789 --> 00:00:53.189 with the controversial Jesus Seminar. This think 00:00:53.189 --> 00:00:56.329 tank, I mean think tank of higher critical scholars, 00:00:57.509 --> 00:01:05.859 pardon me, has an agenda. And the agenda is to, 00:01:05.859 --> 00:01:09.200 they say, discover the historical Jesus behind 00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:13.760 what they perceive to be the traditions and fabrications 00:01:13.760 --> 00:01:17.540 of the New Testament. You see, they approach 00:01:17.540 --> 00:01:21.420 it with a bias, and that is that the story of 00:01:21.420 --> 00:01:24.319 Jesus as recorded in the Gospels is nothing more 00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:29.920 than a collection of imperfect memories and fabrications 00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:33.530 and legends. And so they are seeking, they say, 00:01:33.670 --> 00:01:37.849 to find the historical Jesus. Sadly, they miss 00:01:37.849 --> 00:01:42.230 Him by a mile. Now, if you want to know what 00:01:42.230 --> 00:01:44.709 more I think of the Jesus seminar, you can see 00:01:44.709 --> 00:01:48.430 me afterward if I'm unclear about it. But I do 00:01:48.430 --> 00:01:52.069 want to say that I found the series interesting. 00:01:52.689 --> 00:01:56.739 If one can wade through the bias, of the writers. 00:01:56.859 --> 00:02:00.120 It's worth watching from the historical and cultural 00:02:00.120 --> 00:02:05.299 and even the photographic perspectives. I was 00:02:05.299 --> 00:02:08.520 troubled though by what they did in the series 00:02:08.520 --> 00:02:11.819 in establishing what seems to be an antinomy, 00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:17.939 a contradiction between fact and faith. In other 00:02:17.939 --> 00:02:21.319 words, they claim that the facts as they have 00:02:21.319 --> 00:02:26.060 discovered them are over here. And that faith 00:02:26.060 --> 00:02:31.500 is over here on this side. That somehow the two 00:02:31.500 --> 00:02:36.180 are in contradiction and when the facts are known 00:02:36.180 --> 00:02:44.060 we have to then believe. The facts they say are 00:02:44.060 --> 00:02:46.180 established from archaeology and from history 00:02:46.180 --> 00:02:51.000 and anthropology. What we believe, faith, is 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.219 what we wish were true. even though the facts 00:02:54.219 --> 00:02:59.240 don't substantiate them. The faith, they say, 00:02:59.300 --> 00:03:01.819 is what we desire to be true, and in fact they 00:03:01.819 --> 00:03:04.340 applied that to the resurrection. They admit 00:03:04.340 --> 00:03:06.979 that there is historical evidence that Jesus 00:03:06.979 --> 00:03:10.139 died by crucifixion, but they say there is no 00:03:10.139 --> 00:03:14.460 evidence of the resurrection. And so they propose 00:03:14.460 --> 00:03:18.219 that the followers of Jesus created the idea 00:03:18.219 --> 00:03:21.379 of the resurrection in order to make sense of 00:03:21.379 --> 00:03:25.800 what had happened to Jesus and to them. In other 00:03:25.800 --> 00:03:29.819 words, they wished that it were true, and so 00:03:29.819 --> 00:03:36.060 for them it was true. That is not a biblical 00:03:36.060 --> 00:03:40.699 definition of faith, my friend. Genuine faith, 00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:44.360 the kind of faith that God calls for and honors, 00:03:45.379 --> 00:03:49.340 does not rest merely upon our wishes. or our 00:03:49.340 --> 00:03:56.479 desires. It rests upon evidence. It rests upon 00:03:56.479 --> 00:04:02.620 proof or testimony. God never expects our faith 00:04:02.620 --> 00:04:07.759 to contradict facts, although He does call upon 00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:11.659 our faith to sometimes supersede facts. That 00:04:11.659 --> 00:04:14.419 is, we may not have the facts and therefore we're 00:04:14.419 --> 00:04:16.540 called upon to believe the truth of His testimony. 00:04:18.509 --> 00:04:22.709 The real question posed by these apostate scholars 00:04:22.709 --> 00:04:27.910 is this. Is the historical evidence that we have 00:04:27.910 --> 00:04:32.889 in the Bible reliable or not? These kinds of 00:04:32.889 --> 00:04:35.350 scholars have no problem accepting the word of 00:04:35.350 --> 00:04:40.350 Josephus and other ancient historians. They do 00:04:40.350 --> 00:04:42.829 not question the writings of those people and 00:04:42.829 --> 00:04:45.470 yet they refuse to give the Bible the same courtesy 00:04:45.470 --> 00:04:51.329 or the same credence. And yet, the Bible has 00:04:51.329 --> 00:04:56.250 never been proven to be an error. Time and time 00:04:56.250 --> 00:05:01.149 again, doubts about its accuracy, its historicity, 00:05:02.509 --> 00:05:07.209 have been overwhelmed by the archaeologist's 00:05:07.209 --> 00:05:13.250 spade or the historian's eye. And so I want to 00:05:13.250 --> 00:05:15.629 think about the resurrection this morning and 00:05:15.629 --> 00:05:18.350 simply take the historical evidence that we have. 00:05:19.639 --> 00:05:24.639 Believing the Bible to be true, not approaching 00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:27.060 it with a bias that somehow it couldn't be true, 00:05:27.160 --> 00:05:30.079 but accepting the Bible for exactly what it says 00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:34.699 as a historical document. What do we know about 00:05:34.699 --> 00:05:38.959 the resurrection? Well, here are the facts, some 00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:44.040 of them. We know first that Jesus expected to 00:05:44.040 --> 00:05:48.660 be raised from His grave. It was not a creation 00:05:48.660 --> 00:05:53.379 of His followers. He Himself predicted He would 00:05:53.379 --> 00:05:57.759 rise from the grave. In Luke 9, 22, He said, 00:05:58.920 --> 00:06:01.379 The Son of Man must suffer many things and be 00:06:01.379 --> 00:06:03.939 rejected by the elders and chief priests and 00:06:03.939 --> 00:06:09.160 scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the 00:06:09.160 --> 00:06:14.220 third day. Later again in the Gospel of Luke, 00:06:14.259 --> 00:06:20.000 chapter 18. verses 31 through 33 he warns the 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:25.459 12 behold we are going up to Jerusalem and all 00:06:25.459 --> 00:06:27.319 things which are written through the prophets 00:06:27.319 --> 00:06:31.220 about the Son of Man will be accomplished for 00:06:31.220 --> 00:06:34.379 he will be delivered up to the Gentiles and will 00:06:34.379 --> 00:06:37.959 be mocked and mistreated and spit upon and after 00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:42.120 they have scourged him they will kill him and 00:06:42.120 --> 00:06:47.160 the third day he will rise again So, what do 00:06:47.160 --> 00:06:50.779 we know from the historical record? It is this, 00:06:51.100 --> 00:06:55.279 that Jesus expected to be raised from His grave 00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:01.259 on the third day. My conclusion is this, if the 00:07:01.259 --> 00:07:04.759 resurrection had not occurred, every other thing 00:07:04.759 --> 00:07:08.139 that Jesus said would have been invalidated. 00:07:08.860 --> 00:07:13.220 Everything. We know that Jesus expected to be 00:07:13.220 --> 00:07:18.709 raised. From the historical evidence, we know 00:07:18.709 --> 00:07:23.870 that his tomb was empty on the third day. Again, 00:07:23.889 --> 00:07:27.529 Luke, the master historian, by the way, every 00:07:27.529 --> 00:07:30.569 bit the historian that Josephus was, only more 00:07:30.569 --> 00:07:35.290 accurate. Luke in the 24th chapter of his gospel 00:07:35.290 --> 00:07:39.370 writes about the three women who were the first 00:07:39.370 --> 00:07:43.540 witnesses of the resurrection. On the first day 00:07:43.540 --> 00:07:46.879 of the week, at early dawn, they came to the 00:07:46.879 --> 00:07:49.339 tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared, 00:07:49.399 --> 00:07:51.800 and they found the stone rolled away from the 00:07:51.800 --> 00:07:54.939 tomb. And when they entered, they did not find 00:07:54.939 --> 00:07:58.879 the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened that 00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:01.360 while they were perplexed about this, behold, 00:08:01.459 --> 00:08:04.139 two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling 00:08:04.139 --> 00:08:07.699 apparel. And as the women were terrified and 00:08:07.699 --> 00:08:10.740 bowed their faces to the ground, the men said 00:08:10.740 --> 00:08:14.310 to them, Why do you seek the living one among 00:08:14.310 --> 00:08:19.449 the dead? He is not here, but he has risen. Remember 00:08:19.449 --> 00:08:22.129 how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee, 00:08:22.149 --> 00:08:24.370 saying, the Son of Man must be delivered into 00:08:24.370 --> 00:08:27.589 the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and 00:08:27.589 --> 00:08:35.889 the third day rise again. John recounts the eyewitnesses 00:08:35.889 --> 00:08:38.669 of the two disciples who first arrived at the 00:08:38.669 --> 00:08:42.330 tomb. He says Peter therefore went forth and 00:08:42.330 --> 00:08:44.929 the other disciple as John himself and they were 00:08:44.929 --> 00:08:47.289 going to the tomb and the two of them were running 00:08:47.289 --> 00:08:49.649 together and the other disciple ran ahead faster 00:08:49.649 --> 00:08:53.649 than Peter and came to the tomb first and Stooping 00:08:53.649 --> 00:08:56.870 and looking in he saw the linen wrappings lying 00:08:56.870 --> 00:09:00.269 there, but he did not go in Simon Peter therefore 00:09:00.269 --> 00:09:04.070 also came following him and entered the tomb 00:09:04.070 --> 00:09:08.250 and he beheld the linen wrappings lying there 00:09:08.250 --> 00:09:12.950 and the face cloth which had been on his head 00:09:12.950 --> 00:09:16.649 not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled 00:09:16.649 --> 00:09:20.889 up in a place by itself. So the other disciple 00:09:20.889 --> 00:09:24.450 who had first come to the tomb entered then also, 00:09:25.169 --> 00:09:32.509 and he saw and believed. We know from the historical 00:09:32.509 --> 00:09:36.629 record that the tomb in which Jesus was placed 00:09:36.629 --> 00:09:40.409 after his crucifixion was empty on the morning 00:09:40.409 --> 00:09:44.230 of the third day. If the tomb had not been empty, 00:09:44.509 --> 00:09:48.009 Jesus' followers would have faced ridicule and 00:09:48.009 --> 00:09:51.769 been quickly dismissed. But they were not because 00:09:51.769 --> 00:09:58.230 the tomb was, in fact, empty. We also know this 00:09:58.230 --> 00:10:00.529 from the historical evidence that His enemies 00:10:00.529 --> 00:10:05.429 did not take His body. In fact, they put a guard 00:10:05.429 --> 00:10:07.809 in front of the grave to ensure that it would 00:10:07.809 --> 00:10:12.120 stay there. The Gospel of Matthew tells us about 00:10:12.120 --> 00:10:14.259 this. On the next day, which is the one after 00:10:14.259 --> 00:10:17.200 the preparation, it says, the chief priests and 00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:19.539 the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate and 00:10:19.539 --> 00:10:22.559 said, sir, we remember that when he was still 00:10:22.559 --> 00:10:26.860 alive, that deceiver said, after three days, 00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:31.740 I am to rise again. You see, even his enemies 00:10:31.740 --> 00:10:36.159 knew that he expected to rise the third day. 00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:41.490 Somehow these scholars to millennia later haven't 00:10:41.490 --> 00:10:46.490 figured that out. Therefore, they said, give 00:10:46.490 --> 00:10:49.149 orders for the grave to be made secure until 00:10:49.149 --> 00:10:51.769 the third day, lest the disciples come and steal 00:10:51.769 --> 00:10:54.950 him away, and say to the people he has risen 00:10:54.950 --> 00:10:58.429 from the dead. And the last deception be worse 00:10:58.429 --> 00:11:02.590 than the first. Pilate said to them, you have 00:11:02.590 --> 00:11:05.809 a guard. Go, make it as secure as you know how. 00:11:06.279 --> 00:11:09.019 And they went and made the grave secure, and 00:11:09.019 --> 00:11:13.320 along with the guard, they set a seal on the 00:11:13.320 --> 00:11:18.100 stone, a Roman seal, so that if anyone broke 00:11:18.100 --> 00:11:23.960 it, he would be punished by death by Rome. You 00:11:23.960 --> 00:11:26.940 see, they were determined to keep his body in 00:11:26.940 --> 00:11:30.360 the grave. The last thing in the world they wanted 00:11:30.360 --> 00:11:32.620 to do was to take his body out of the grave. 00:11:33.559 --> 00:11:37.440 But they failed in their efforts. He rose from 00:11:37.440 --> 00:11:41.399 the grave, and later his enemies schemed to cover 00:11:41.399 --> 00:11:44.340 up what they could not explain. Matthew goes 00:11:44.340 --> 00:11:47.419 on to say, Some of the guard came into the city 00:11:47.419 --> 00:11:49.659 and reported to the chief priests all that had 00:11:49.659 --> 00:11:52.299 happened. And when they had assembled with the 00:11:52.299 --> 00:11:54.419 elders and counsel together, they gave a large 00:11:54.419 --> 00:11:57.019 sum of money to the soldiers. They bribed them 00:11:57.019 --> 00:12:00.460 and said, You are to say his disciples came by 00:12:00.460 --> 00:12:02.919 night and stole him away while we were asleep. 00:12:03.490 --> 00:12:05.629 And if this should come to the governor's ears, 00:12:05.710 --> 00:12:08.950 we will win him over and keep you out of trouble." 00:12:08.950 --> 00:12:10.870 And they took the money and did as they had been 00:12:10.870 --> 00:12:14.090 instructed. And this story, says Matthew, was 00:12:14.090 --> 00:12:18.509 widely spread among the Jews and is to this day. 00:12:20.070 --> 00:12:24.090 And so, what are the facts? The historical evidence 00:12:24.090 --> 00:12:29.649 is that his enemies did not have, nor could they 00:12:29.649 --> 00:12:34.700 produce, his body. If, in fact, they had stolen 00:12:34.700 --> 00:12:38.240 his body, they could have produced it, and that 00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:44.539 would have been the end of Christianity. The 00:12:44.539 --> 00:12:47.320 Jesus Seminar scholars ignore the dilemma of 00:12:47.320 --> 00:12:52.500 the empty tomb, but it brings me to the fourth 00:12:52.500 --> 00:12:56.200 fact that we know from the historical evidence, 00:12:56.740 --> 00:12:59.500 and that is that his followers were transformed. 00:13:00.009 --> 00:13:03.250 We know this. The historical record says so. 00:13:04.490 --> 00:13:07.090 They were not in the mood to create some resurrection 00:13:07.090 --> 00:13:12.490 myth. They were dispirited and depressed and 00:13:12.490 --> 00:13:15.870 fearful for their lives. For they were associated 00:13:15.870 --> 00:13:20.389 now with this man who had been crucified. And 00:13:20.389 --> 00:13:23.090 yet they were changed from a fearful, dispirited 00:13:23.090 --> 00:13:27.830 band of adherents to a joyful, triumphant body 00:13:27.830 --> 00:13:32.059 of apostles. who fearlessly proclaimed a resurrected 00:13:32.059 --> 00:13:41.259 Lord. Why? What changed them? It is that they 00:13:41.259 --> 00:13:46.840 saw Him, individually and in groups. Groups large 00:13:46.840 --> 00:13:51.580 and groups small. They ate with Him. They touched 00:13:51.580 --> 00:13:56.679 Him. They talked with Him. The empirical evidence 00:13:56.679 --> 00:13:59.139 for the resurrection could not be greater in 00:13:59.139 --> 00:14:05.340 the historical record. Here is proof that Jesus 00:14:05.340 --> 00:14:11.940 bodily rose from the grave. He said to them after 00:14:11.940 --> 00:14:15.139 his resurrection, see my hands and my feet that 00:14:15.139 --> 00:14:22.029 it is I myself. Touch me and see. For a spirit 00:14:22.029 --> 00:14:24.429 does not have flesh and bones, as you see that 00:14:24.429 --> 00:14:28.169 I have. And while they could not believe it for 00:14:28.169 --> 00:14:30.370 joy and for marveling, he said to them, Have 00:14:30.370 --> 00:14:34.990 you anything here to eat? And they gave him a 00:14:34.990 --> 00:14:37.470 piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate 00:14:37.470 --> 00:14:42.789 it before them." And again, Luke the historian 00:14:42.789 --> 00:14:46.909 summarizes all of the accounts of his resurrection. 00:14:47.289 --> 00:14:49.789 and says in the book of Acts, the first chapter 00:14:49.789 --> 00:14:53.330 and the third verse, To these, his followers, 00:14:54.129 --> 00:14:58.269 he also presented himself alive after his suffering 00:14:58.269 --> 00:15:03.870 by many convincing proofs, appearing to them 00:15:03.870 --> 00:15:08.870 over a period of forty days. My friend, there 00:15:08.870 --> 00:15:11.610 is no other explanation for the transformation 00:15:11.610 --> 00:15:16.980 in the disciples. The powerful change in their 00:15:16.980 --> 00:15:21.019 disposition can only be explained in terms of 00:15:21.019 --> 00:15:23.980 the fact that they were convinced that Jesus 00:15:23.980 --> 00:15:29.580 truly had been raised from the dead. Now these 00:15:29.580 --> 00:15:34.460 are historical facts that are drawn from an ancient 00:15:34.460 --> 00:15:37.559 document that has withstood every attempt by 00:15:37.559 --> 00:15:41.759 skeptics and critics through the ages to undermine 00:15:41.759 --> 00:15:49.440 its accuracy. in every respect, the Bible. And 00:15:49.440 --> 00:15:55.419 today we stand upon the historical record of 00:15:55.419 --> 00:15:58.940 Jesus Christ, His birth, His life, His death, 00:15:59.100 --> 00:16:04.360 and His resurrection from the dead. We know these 00:16:04.360 --> 00:16:11.159 facts. Therefore, we believe. You see, there 00:16:11.159 --> 00:16:16.120 is no battle between faith and facts. God expects 00:16:16.120 --> 00:16:20.860 our faith to be grounded and built upon the facts 00:16:20.860 --> 00:16:27.220 that we have. We know these facts. Therefore, 00:16:27.419 --> 00:16:33.159 we believe that Jesus is the Savior or the Judge 00:16:33.159 --> 00:16:39.340 of every person. That's how the Bible portrays 00:16:39.340 --> 00:16:43.559 Him. He is either your Savior today or He is 00:16:43.559 --> 00:16:49.779 your Judge today. And one day you will stand 00:16:49.779 --> 00:16:54.100 before Him and He will fulfill that role in your 00:16:54.100 --> 00:17:02.360 life, saving you or judging you. And we believe 00:17:02.360 --> 00:17:06.500 furthermore that all who trust Him are saved 00:17:06.500 --> 00:17:13.470 and all who reject Him are condemned. That is 00:17:13.470 --> 00:17:17.289 the message of the Bible. That is the message 00:17:17.289 --> 00:17:22.470 of our faith. We believe, because of the historical 00:17:22.470 --> 00:17:26.730 facts that we have at hand, that all who trust 00:17:26.730 --> 00:17:30.650 in Him, believing that His death on the cross 00:17:30.650 --> 00:17:34.829 was for their sins, that He died as their substitute, 00:17:34.930 --> 00:17:40.450 taking God's punishment, condemnation upon Himself, 00:17:42.710 --> 00:17:46.329 that all who believe in Him will be forgiven 00:17:46.329 --> 00:17:52.650 of sins and will receive eternal life. But we 00:17:52.650 --> 00:17:57.789 also believe that all who neglect or reject that 00:17:57.789 --> 00:18:04.910 message continue on under the condemnation of 00:18:04.910 --> 00:18:10.150 God. On this Easter Sunday the message I hope 00:18:10.150 --> 00:18:15.230 is very clear to you that Jesus Christ is alive 00:18:15.230 --> 00:18:19.230 and that truth has implications that reach to 00:18:19.230 --> 00:18:24.569 the heart of every one of us. And if today you 00:18:24.569 --> 00:18:30.069 are trusting Him as your Savior, if you have 00:18:30.069 --> 00:18:33.190 received Him by faith into your life to forgive 00:18:33.190 --> 00:18:37.990 you and to be the Lord of your life, If that 00:18:37.990 --> 00:18:43.390 is a reality to you, then rejoice. And on this 00:18:43.390 --> 00:18:47.990 Easter day, give yourself anew to Him. For this 00:18:47.990 --> 00:18:51.289 One is worthy of our worship. He is worthy of 00:18:51.289 --> 00:18:58.009 our service. He is worthy of our sacrifice. But 00:18:58.009 --> 00:19:01.769 if you have not trusted in Him yet, if your life 00:19:01.769 --> 00:19:06.259 has not yet been transformed, by placing your 00:19:06.259 --> 00:19:11.559 faith in these facts. We invite you to do that 00:19:11.559 --> 00:19:15.339 today and to receive Him this morning into your 00:19:15.339 --> 00:19:18.900 heart, into your life, to change you now and 00:19:18.900 --> 00:19:24.240 to change your destiny forever.
