I’m going to start with the devil’s bridge, that of which there are 49 of around the world so I should actually say Devil’s bridges For this episode i’m going to focus on the Devil’s Bridge in Ceredigion, Wales but this one article I read said that it probably originated with this particular bridge so here we are! This bridge is pretty cool to look at, it consists of 3 separate co-existant bridges, each one built upon the previous bridge. As this legend goes for the original first bridge, a local woman misplaced her cow… as you do, only to discover it on the far side of the river The devil appears and offers to build the lady a bridge to recover the misplaced cow, in exchange he would receive the soul of the first being to cross the bridge. So this woman agreed and decided once the bridge was built to throw a piece of food across the bridge to get her dog to run across to be the first victim of the devil in order to have her bridge, and the devil was left with only the soul of a dog.. Good for the devil, bad for the woman, how rude to the dog —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now I move onto Germany where the Devil himself had his hand in helping construct more than one church- shocking, I know! And I could have done more than one bridge but instead I chose to do more than 1 church First is located in Munich and goes by the name Frauenkirche According to legend, in 1468 architect Jorg Von Halspach went looking for dollas to build a new cathedral in Munich and ended up making a bargain with the devil. It’s become more and more common these days I guess The deal was that the Devil himself would provide the funds for the huge building on the condition that it be a celebration of darkness, with no windows to let in the light. When the building was complete, von Helpach led the Devil inside to survey his work, and to show him that he had held up his end of the bargain. Although there was light, there seemed to be no windows and the devil signed off on it. But when he took another step further, the columns that had been blocking the view of the windows opened up and in the devil’s furry at being tricked, stamped his foot on the ground, forever marking the floor with his black footprint which is still there to this day in the original floorwork. Next Church located This church, while being built during the mid 13th century is said that have had none other than Satan himself stop by the construction site to see what the goings ons were. That’s what he did in Germany back then as some people needed loans to finish and or start construction. Anyhow, the workers were too scared to tell him the truth, so under duress they proclaimed er um its a uhhhh, a wine bar, yeah! The devil was fucking excited, apparently not for the wi but apparently because this meant more souls for him. Which, phew, I thought for a second I was like me and the devil could be friends, but now that I know he doesn’t like wine it’s off. Anyhow, he was so excited he was like let me help! As the legend goes, it was only near the end of construction that Satan himself realized he’d been tricked, it was probably the cross and stained glass. Also probably that he kept getting tricked, i’d be pissed too, like not again! In his rage, he picked up a large slab to destroy the church but a quick thinking construction dude promised him that they would build a wine bar in the neighbourhood, he was like ok fine and dropped the slab The slab still remains in that spot with the markings that are supposedly the claw marks of the devil and is called the “devils stone” To honour the legend, a bronze statue of the devil was placed on the slab in 1999 but he’s particularly happy which I dunno if he’d be happy with because he was so pissed it wasn’t a wine bar. The story does have a happy ending of the people of Lubick did end up building the Ratskeller tavern across the road from the church, thank you satan for that. Route 666 "The Devil's Highway", the "Highway to Hell" or "Satan's Highway" and its life began in 1926, when it was christened route 666, for real, for no other reason than to follow the numbering guidelines set out by the American Association of State Highway Officials. These days It actually goes by US Route 491 due to the connotation of route 666 which it did actually go by for a time, it wasn’t good for business, alot of signs were stolen The road goes through 4 states: Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. It’s 321km long, and runs from the city of Monticello in Utah to Gallup in New Mexico The highway passes through Navajo territory, mines, Shiprock, and across the Colorado Border. BTW Shiprock is a weird sacred mountain to the navajo people… the highway ranges in altitude from 2,900 feet to more than 11,000, has over 400 curves in one 100 KM stretch, and edges many steep cliffs (which also has sent numerous travellers careening to their deaths) . It also crosses over Navajo territory, and across a number of mines. In addition to everything I just said it has also been hailed as one of the most haunted places in America, with a long, bizarre history of all manner of weirdness, bad luck, inexplicable accidents, ghosts, apparitions, spectres, and various other unexplained phenomena. The road also has an abnormally high number of fatalities. The road features a spooky reputation and some of the strange activity witnessed include: a haunted truck, a girl in the white dress, faceless hitchhikers, weird lights, hell hounds, disappearing drivers, demon dogs, time loss, Skin Walkers or Satan’s sedan. First up we’ve got the hitchikers, which you may want to think twice about before picking up on route 666 because one of the most commonly-reported sightings, and are rumoured not to be friendly. One being a girl wears a white gown that supposedly walks along the highway attempting to flag down drivers. Once they stop, she simply vanishes before their eyes. Another girl is said to run out into traffic and vanish right before she’s hit by the oncoming vehicle. Next, we’ve got the flaming ‘out-of-control semi’ with a ‘mad driver’ – who the locals believe to be a serial killer. The rig is rumored to be sighted, and then to come barreling directly towards you – down the middle of the highway vanishing right before impact. Native American locals have a tale of skinwalkers which will first appear in front of your vehicle hoping to cause the driver to swerve and crash. If this does not work they appear in the back seat of the car– Travelers are advised not to drive alone so that the shapeshifter will not have room to sit. Many travellers have disappeared and returned several hours or days later, or takes significantly longer than expected to arrive at their final destinations – and were completely unable to account for the lost time, nor had any recollection of their travels, nor had any idea they were gone for so very long. Then theres the black sedan. The EVIL black sedan. Many individuals that have traveled this road have stated that as doing so, they began to experience an intense degree of fear as the sun sets. Once darkness falls on the desolate road, the witnesses claim to see headlights coming up behind them. Despite the fact that they reach high speeds, the car seems to gain on them quickly. Many pull over in order to get out of the way of the dangerously close vehicle. Many witness the vehicle speeding fast past them. Others look up to view the vehicle and discover that there was no vehicle at all. Is this a hallucination induced by the desert, or does Satan truly intimidate travelers in a mysterious black sedan? Linda Dunning, author of “Specters in Doorways: The History and Hauntings of Utah” says “Packs of demon dogs have been seen on this highway as well. They attack at night with yellow eyes and sharp teeth; shredding the tires of those silly enough to stop along this highway at night.” The hounds of hell are said to have the capability of running as fast as a vehicle regardless of the speed Bang Saen, Thailand: Wat Saen Suk Chris Hellier / Alamy Get scared straight at a Thai open-air park, which graphically depicts what it’s like to go to Buddhist Hell. Located a 1.5-hour drive southeast from Bangkok, Wat Saen Suk is filled with sculptures of demons that rule the lowest realms of samsara, or worldly existence. Cower under skeletal “hungry ghosts” with long tongues, which represent the delusion of craving. Then, witness how demons punish wicked individuals until their negative karma is spent. From having birds peck out their guts, to replacing a human’s head with that of a pig, the tortures are remarkably creative—and make Christian hell look like a walk in the park.
