Before 00:03:22.810 --> 00:03:25.289 there were kings, before there were prophets, 00:03:25.560 --> 00:03:28.520 Before there was Israel, before there was even 00:03:28.520 --> 00:03:31.580 sin, God had already established a law that would 00:03:31.580 --> 00:03:35.479 never change. A grape seed will never produce 00:03:41.580 --> 00:03:45.580 figs. The harvest always reveals the seed that 00:03:45.580 --> 00:03:48.780 was planted. Now here's what amazes me. Let's look at what God has been planting 00:06:51.259 --> 00:06:55.000 from generation to generation. When I started 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:57.300 reading the Bible through this lens, I noticed 00:06:57.300 --> 00:06:59.779 something I had never really seen before. God 00:06:59.779 --> 00:07:02.579 almost never begins by changing a situation. 00:07:02.819 --> 00:07:06.139 He begins by planting something inside a person 00:07:06.139 --> 00:07:09.000 long before anyone else can see it. Take Abraham, 00:07:09.079 --> 00:07:11.680 for example. When God first called Abraham, There 00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:14.100 was nothing extraordinary about his circumstances. 00:07:14.439 --> 00:07:16.879 He wasn't the father of a great nation. He wasn't 00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:19.420 surrounded by descendants. He wasn't even holding 00:07:19.420 --> 00:07:22.379 the child God had promised him. All he had was 00:07:22.379 --> 00:07:25.379 a promise. That's all. One promise. One word 00:07:25.379 --> 00:07:28.259 from God. One seed planted in the heart of an 00:07:28.259 --> 00:07:31.259 old man. Years passed. Nothing seemed to happen. 00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:33.879 The promise looked impossible. But while Abraham 00:07:33.879 --> 00:07:36.699 was waiting, the seed was growing. Because God's 00:07:36.699 --> 00:07:39.600 promises don't stop growing simply because we 00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:42.579 can't yet see the harvest. Eventually, that one 00:07:42.579 --> 00:07:45.360 promise became Isaac. Isaac became a family. 00:07:45.579 --> 00:07:48.540 The family became a nation. And today, billions 00:07:48.540 --> 00:07:51.319 of people still know Abraham as the father of 00:07:51.319 --> 00:07:54.399 faith. It all began with one seed. Then I think 00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:57.040 about Joseph. God didn't begin Joseph's story 00:07:57.040 --> 00:08:00.160 with a palace. He began it with a dream. Can 00:08:00.160 --> 00:08:02.740 you imagine being a young man carrying a dream 00:08:02.740 --> 00:08:05.730 that nobody else understood? In fact, the very 00:08:05.730 --> 00:08:08.430 dream God planted became the reason Joseph was 00:08:08.430 --> 00:08:10.790 hated. His brothers rejected him. They threw 00:08:10.790 --> 00:08:14.110 him into a pit, sold him as a slave. He was falsely 00:08:14.110 --> 00:08:16.649 accused, forgotten in prison. If you had looked 00:08:16.649 --> 00:08:18.870 at Joseph's life in that moment, you might have 00:08:18.870 --> 00:08:21.310 concluded that the dream had failed. But here's 00:08:21.310 --> 00:08:23.750 what I love about God. God wasn't protecting 00:08:23.750 --> 00:08:26.629 Joseph's comfort. He was protecting the seed 00:08:26.629 --> 00:08:30.050 he had planted. People saw a pit. God saw preservation. 00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:33.120 People saw a prisoner. God saw a governor. People 00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:36.379 saw one forgotten young man. God saw an entire 00:08:36.379 --> 00:08:39.139 generation that would one day be saved. Years 00:08:39.139 --> 00:08:41.419 later, Joseph looked at the same brothers who 00:08:41.419 --> 00:08:43.840 betrayed him and said, You intended to harm me, 00:08:44.019 --> 00:08:46.559 but God intended it for good, to accomplish what 00:08:46.559 --> 00:08:49.179 is now being done, the saving of many lives. 00:08:49.460 --> 00:08:51.799 Do you hear what Joseph is saying? God planted 00:08:51.799 --> 00:08:55.059 one dream inside one young man, and that one 00:08:55.059 --> 00:08:58.669 dream became food for an entire generation. That's 00:08:58.669 --> 00:09:01.970 how God works. He plants today what generations 00:09:01.970 --> 00:09:04.490 will desperately need tomorrow. Maybe that's 00:09:04.490 --> 00:09:06.850 a word for someone listening today. Perhaps God 00:09:06.850 --> 00:09:09.149 has planted something inside you that nobody 00:09:09.149 --> 00:09:11.870 else understands. Maybe it's a calling. Maybe 00:09:11.870 --> 00:09:14.429 it's a burden. Maybe it's a dream. Maybe it's 00:09:14.429 --> 00:09:16.990 a vision that seems impossible. Solomon became known throughout 00:09:43.769 --> 00:09:46.529 the world, not because he inherited wisdom, but 00:09:46.529 --> 00:09:48.970 because God planted wisdom within him. David 00:09:48.970 --> 00:09:52.090 stumbled more than once, but every time he fell, 00:09:52.309 --> 00:09:55.389 he ran back to God. People remember David's failures. 00:09:55.649 --> 00:09:58.289 God remembered the heart he had planted within 00:09:58.289 --> 00:10:00.909 him. And that's the difference. Most of us spend a lot of time thinking 00:10:27.090 --> 00:10:30.809 about today, the problems we're facing, the prayers 00:10:30.809 --> 00:10:33.789 we're asking God to answer, the decisions we 00:10:33.789 --> 00:10:36.909 have to make this week. We're naturally focused 00:10:36.909 --> 00:10:40.250 on the present. But the more I read the scriptures, 00:10:40.830 --> 00:10:44.330 the more I realize God is almost never thinking 00:10:44.330 --> 00:10:47.750 about just today. He's already looking at tomorrow. 00:10:48.210 --> 00:10:52.110 In fact, he's looking far beyond tomorrow. He's 00:10:52.110 --> 00:10:56.169 looking from generation to generation. That's 00:10:56.169 --> 00:10:59.269 a phrase you find throughout the Bible. His covenant 00:10:59.269 --> 00:11:03.470 from generation to generation. His mercy from 00:11:03.470 --> 00:11:07.049 generation to generation. His faithfulness from 00:11:07.049 --> 00:11:10.070 generation to generation. I don't think those 00:11:10.070 --> 00:11:12.690 words are there by accident. I think they're 00:11:12.690 --> 00:11:16.450 showing us how God sees history. When God plants 00:11:16.450 --> 00:11:19.490 something, he's rarely thinking about one lifetime. 00:11:20.129 --> 00:11:23.169 He's thinking about generations. Take Hannah. 00:11:23.789 --> 00:11:25.690 Have you ever thought about her story from that 00:11:25.690 --> 00:11:28.669 perspective? Most of us remember Hannah because 00:11:28.669 --> 00:11:31.590 she couldn't have children. We remember the miracle. 00:11:32.049 --> 00:11:35.049 We remember Samuel. But the more I think about 00:11:35.049 --> 00:11:38.649 it, the more I realize the miracle wasn't simply 00:11:38.649 --> 00:11:41.830 that God gave her a son. The miracle was that 00:11:41.830 --> 00:11:44.679 Hannah understood that some of the greatest gifts 00:11:44.679 --> 00:11:48.419 God gives us are not meant to stay with us. They're 00:11:48.419 --> 00:11:51.179 meant to be planted. She could have held tightly 00:11:51.179 --> 00:11:54.700 to Samuel. After all, she had prayed for him. 00:11:54.960 --> 00:11:57.600 She had cried for him. She had waited for him. 00:11:57.840 --> 00:12:01.580 But instead, she gave him back to God. Can you 00:12:01.580 --> 00:12:05.059 imagine that? She planted what she loved the 00:12:05.059 --> 00:12:08.580 most. And look at the harvest. Samuel became 00:12:08.580 --> 00:12:11.840 the prophet who anointed kings. Samuel anointed 00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:15.500 David. And through David's family line came Jesus 00:12:15.500 --> 00:12:19.000 Christ. One mother's prayer continued bearing 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:22.820 fruit long after she was gone. That's how God 00:12:22.820 --> 00:12:26.480 thinks. And then there's Rahab. I have to admit, 00:12:26.940 --> 00:12:29.899 her story has always fascinated me. Because if 00:12:29.899 --> 00:12:32.039 anyone had a past that should have disqualified 00:12:32.039 --> 00:12:36.559 them, it was Rahab. She was a Canaanite, an outsider, 00:12:37.120 --> 00:12:40.080 a prostitute. Everything about her life said, 00:12:40.639 --> 00:12:44.139 this story ends here. But God saw something different. 00:12:44.679 --> 00:12:47.840 He saw a seed. When those two Israelite spies 00:12:47.840 --> 00:12:51.120 arrived in Jericho, Rahab had a decision to make. 00:12:51.559 --> 00:12:55.360 She chose faith. She protected the spies. She 00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:58.080 trusted the God of Israel before she had ever 00:12:58.080 --> 00:13:01.299 seen the walls of Jericho fall. Think about that. 00:13:01.659 --> 00:13:05.440 She believed before she had proof. She tied the 00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:08.080 scarlet cord in her window. Most people read 00:13:08.080 --> 00:13:12.210 that and see a cord. I read it. And I see a seed, 00:13:12.730 --> 00:13:16.350 a seed of faith, a seed of obedience, a seed 00:13:16.350 --> 00:13:19.389 of covenant. And here's what moves me every time 00:13:19.389 --> 00:13:23.669 I read her story. Rahab had absolutely no idea 00:13:23.669 --> 00:13:26.149 what God was going to do with that one decision. 00:13:26.889 --> 00:13:29.789 Years later, Matthew begins the genealogy of 00:13:29.789 --> 00:13:34.210 Jesus. And there she is, Rahab, not remembered 00:13:34.210 --> 00:13:37.629 for her shame, not remembered for her past, but 00:13:37.629 --> 00:13:41.029 remembered because one act of faith became part 00:13:41.029 --> 00:13:43.470 of God's plan to bring the Savior into the world. 00:13:44.309 --> 00:13:47.029 You know what that tells me? People often remember 00:13:47.029 --> 00:13:50.210 where you've been. God remembers what you've 00:13:50.210 --> 00:13:52.769 planted. And I think somebody listening today 00:13:52.769 --> 00:13:56.409 needs to hear that. Your past does not have the 00:13:56.409 --> 00:14:00.190 final word. One act of obedience can change the 00:14:00.190 --> 00:14:03.549 direction of generations. Then I started thinking 00:14:03.549 --> 00:14:06.830 about the disciples. Have you ever noticed how 00:14:06.830 --> 00:14:10.340 ordinary they were? Fishermen. a tax collector, 00:14:11.019 --> 00:14:12.879 men that nobody would have selected to change 00:14:12.879 --> 00:14:15.720 the world. But Jesus wasn't looking at what they 00:14:15.720 --> 00:14:18.379 were. He was looking at what he could plant in 00:14:18.379 --> 00:14:22.720 them. For three years, he planted truth. He planted 00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:26.320 faith. He planted courage. He planted the kingdom. 00:14:27.019 --> 00:14:29.379 When he returned to the Father, he didn't leave 00:14:29.379 --> 00:14:32.200 behind buildings. He didn't leave behind wealth. 00:14:32.740 --> 00:14:36.460 He left behind people carrying seeds. When he said, unless a grain of wheat 00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:04.419 falls into the ground and dies, he wasn't giving 00:15:04.419 --> 00:15:07.659 an agriculture lesson. He was talking about himself. 00:15:08.039 --> 00:15:11.360 He willingly allowed himself to be planted. The 00:15:11.360 --> 00:15:14.919 cross wasn't the end. It was the planting.
