He talked about the assembly, 00:01:13.650 --> 00:01:16.129 how that was supposed to be set up, come around 00:01:16.129 --> 00:01:18.069 the Lord's table on the first day of the week, 00:01:18.409 --> 00:01:20.129 one person speaking, everyone else being quiet, 00:01:20.230 --> 00:01:23.730 do it for edification. He did a good job about... 00:01:25.989 --> 00:01:28.250 about correlating it to a guy named Alfredo. 00:01:28.329 --> 00:01:30.310 This guy named Alfredo, guess what he made? He 00:01:30.310 --> 00:01:33.549 made Alfredo. And Alfredo, he had a certain recipe 00:01:33.549 --> 00:01:36.390 to it, and he used three ingredients. Now today, 00:01:36.409 --> 00:01:38.989 we like American Alfredo that has the cream and 00:01:38.989 --> 00:01:40.510 all the good stuff that makes us a little bit 00:01:40.510 --> 00:01:43.489 overweight. And if you do that, it's no longer 00:01:43.489 --> 00:01:46.409 Alfredo, okay? When you add to it, it's no longer 00:01:46.409 --> 00:01:48.310 that. And he correlated that with the Christian 00:01:48.310 --> 00:01:51.310 church. When you add to what Christ wanted the 00:01:51.310 --> 00:01:55.540 church to be, it's no longer Jesus' recipe. Next, 00:01:55.659 --> 00:01:57.640 we see the fulfillment of the fallen away. James 00:01:57.640 --> 00:02:00.040 talked about this. The church went through intense 00:02:00.040 --> 00:02:02.719 persecution at this time. And after that, they 00:02:02.719 --> 00:02:05.480 started adding things to Christ's recipe. They 00:02:05.480 --> 00:02:07.420 started adding things like infant baptism. They 00:02:07.420 --> 00:02:10.620 started adding ceremonies to the church. They 00:02:10.620 --> 00:02:12.979 changed the hierarchy. You know what it was? 00:02:13.280 --> 00:02:16.039 then it was no longer Christ Church. It was a 00:02:16.039 --> 00:02:18.740 different recipe. And if we're using that same 00:02:18.740 --> 00:02:20.379 correlation with what we're going to talk about 00:02:20.379 --> 00:02:23.000 today about the call to reform, what the church 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:25.939 was then, it was no longer Alfredo. It was no 00:02:25.939 --> 00:02:28.020 longer a few ingredients added to it. It was 00:02:28.020 --> 00:02:30.719 chicken fried steak now. It was so far gone from 00:02:30.719 --> 00:02:32.460 what Christ would want it to be that you couldn't 00:02:32.460 --> 00:02:34.699 even recognize it. So before we get started, 00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:36.240 there's two questions I want you to think about 00:02:36.240 --> 00:02:38.680 during this study. One question is, why is there 00:02:38.680 --> 00:02:41.500 six churches in Wheeler, Texas? Why is there 00:02:41.500 --> 00:02:43.409 three churches in Allison? Can you answer that? 00:02:43.669 --> 00:02:45.710 Why that's so? And we're going to look at that 00:02:45.710 --> 00:02:48.370 today. And also, can you take chicken fried steak, 00:02:48.449 --> 00:02:50.849 take a few ingredients out, and make it alfredo 00:02:50.849 --> 00:02:53.990 again? Can you do that? So we're going to start 00:02:53.990 --> 00:02:55.650 with this, the call to reform. We're going to 00:02:55.650 --> 00:02:58.430 look at Jeremiah chapter 6, verse 16. It says, 00:03:02.909 --> 00:03:10.409 So there's these guys called the reformers. And 00:03:10.409 --> 00:03:12.389 they see that the church has gotten far away 00:03:12.389 --> 00:03:14.169 from what Jesus would have the church to be. 00:03:14.430 --> 00:03:16.389 And they say, we need to go back to those old 00:03:16.389 --> 00:03:18.610 ways and change it and get back to the New Testament 00:03:18.610 --> 00:03:21.250 and change it back to the way Christ would have 00:03:21.250 --> 00:03:24.840 it. study and see if they did that. So what was 00:03:24.840 --> 00:03:26.860 going on during this time period that made the 00:03:26.860 --> 00:03:28.900 reformers say, hey we need to make a change? 00:03:29.409 --> 00:03:31.310 There was a place or there was a thing called 00:03:31.310 --> 00:03:34.250 the PayPal hierarchy and what that was was you 00:03:34.250 --> 00:03:37.030 have the Pope You have the Cardinals Archbishop's 00:03:37.030 --> 00:03:39.669 bishops priests local congregations. You have 00:03:39.669 --> 00:03:43.349 this Territorial hierarchy. It's not as Christ 00:03:43.349 --> 00:03:45.870 set up They were over all the churches not every 00:03:45.870 --> 00:03:48.689 local church was autonomous and the Pope was 00:03:48.689 --> 00:03:50.870 the main authority And what a bunch of these 00:03:50.870 --> 00:03:52.909 reformers had a problem with was the Pope would 00:03:52.909 --> 00:03:54.569 tell you what you didn't believe in the Bible 00:03:54.569 --> 00:03:57.569 He was above scripture. If you had a doctrinal 00:03:57.569 --> 00:03:59.199 issue, you said maybe we should change something 00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:01.460 he would look at and he would give you the answer 00:04:01.460 --> 00:04:03.939 for that. So they were not looking at the scripture 00:04:03.939 --> 00:04:07.020 for the authority, but looking at the pope. Pope 00:04:07.020 --> 00:04:11.300 Boniface VIII in 1302 said, Furthermore, we declare, 00:04:11.460 --> 00:04:13.740 we proclaim, we define that it is absolutely 00:04:13.740 --> 00:04:17.959 necessary for salvation that every human creature 00:04:17.959 --> 00:04:20.879 be subject to Roman potniff. Roman potniff here 00:04:20.879 --> 00:04:23.720 is the pope. We need to be in subjection to him, 00:04:23.740 --> 00:04:25.600 not scripture. He will tell us what scripture 00:04:25.600 --> 00:04:28.350 says and how we're supposed to follow it. And 00:04:28.350 --> 00:04:30.850 we know in the Bible, 2 Timothy chapter 3, 16 00:04:30.850 --> 00:04:33.509 through 17, it says all scripture is given by 00:04:33.509 --> 00:04:35.990 inspiration of God and is probable for doctrine, 00:04:36.430 --> 00:04:38.829 for reproof, for correction, instruction and 00:04:38.829 --> 00:04:41.970 righteousness that the man of God may be complete, 00:04:42.170 --> 00:04:43.930 thoroughly equipped for every good work. So we 00:04:43.930 --> 00:04:46.769 know we're supposed to go to scripture for our 00:04:46.769 --> 00:04:49.430 ultimate authority because this is inspired by 00:04:49.430 --> 00:04:51.550 God, but that's not how they were doing it. They 00:04:51.550 --> 00:04:54.410 were looking to the pope as that ultimate authority 00:04:54.410 --> 00:04:57.620 during this time period. Next we got church tradition 00:04:57.620 --> 00:05:00.079 was right up there with scripture There was man 00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:02.060 -made laws that they said this is right up there 00:05:02.060 --> 00:05:04.660 with the law of God Okay, so one of those things 00:05:04.660 --> 00:05:06.660 was you need to confess your sin once a year 00:05:06.660 --> 00:05:10.100 your very bad sins to the priest You know that 00:05:10.100 --> 00:05:12.019 is not in scripture anywhere that was man -made, 00:05:12.040 --> 00:05:14.660 but if you didn't do it there could be repercussions 00:05:14.660 --> 00:05:17.860 You could be not able to take communion You can 00:05:17.860 --> 00:05:19.180 be kicked out of the church if you're not going 00:05:19.180 --> 00:05:21.740 to follow with what they said. They had the seven 00:05:21.740 --> 00:05:24.740 sacraments, baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:26.920 reconciliation, the anointing of the sick, holy 00:05:26.920 --> 00:05:29.480 orders, and matrimony. They had these ceremonies 00:05:29.480 --> 00:05:31.759 that they did that are not in the Bible. You'll 00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:33.500 see baptism here, and this was talking about 00:05:33.500 --> 00:05:36.339 infant baptism. And then later on you do the 00:05:36.339 --> 00:05:38.399 confirmation, and you know what that is? Later 00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:40.279 on when you could actually believe that Jesus 00:05:40.279 --> 00:05:42.519 Christ is the Son of God, then you would receive 00:05:42.519 --> 00:05:45.180 the Holy Spirit. And we know in Acts 2 .38 we 00:05:45.180 --> 00:05:47.170 receive the Holy Spirit after... were saved. 00:05:47.209 --> 00:05:51.709 So they had man -made laws that they put up there 00:05:51.709 --> 00:05:54.910 right with Christ laws. Who in the Bible have 00:05:54.910 --> 00:05:57.329 you ever heard of who does that? That put their 00:05:57.329 --> 00:05:59.430 man -made laws right up there with Christ laws. 00:05:59.879 --> 00:06:02.839 In Mark chapter 7, 8 through 9, it says, The 00:06:02.839 --> 00:06:15.980 Pharisees were doing this back in the New Testament 00:06:15.980 --> 00:06:18.060 days. They were putting their man -made laws 00:06:18.060 --> 00:06:19.740 right up there with God laws. And Jesus tells 00:06:19.740 --> 00:06:22.500 them, you're taking your man -made laws and making 00:06:22.500 --> 00:06:24.399 it one of God's laws. And that's the same thing 00:06:24.399 --> 00:06:26.949 the church was doing this with... infant baptism, 00:06:26.990 --> 00:06:28.949 which we're going to talk about quite a bit this 00:06:28.949 --> 00:06:32.730 morning. They put it up there and they did away 00:06:32.730 --> 00:06:37.009 with Christ's plan of salvation and said infant 00:06:37.009 --> 00:06:41.769 baptism was right there with it. You know, history 00:06:41.769 --> 00:06:44.810 repeats itself. Alright, next you have indulgences, 00:06:45.009 --> 00:06:47.189 abuses. So we're going to talk about three main 00:06:47.189 --> 00:06:48.569 points here. There's a lot more points if you 00:06:48.569 --> 00:06:50.689 want to study them, but indulgences, abuses was 00:06:50.689 --> 00:06:52.910 a big one back then. The reformers had a big 00:06:52.910 --> 00:06:55.410 problem with this. And what those were, after 00:06:55.410 --> 00:06:57.350 you die, their belief was you go to a place called 00:06:57.350 --> 00:06:59.250 purgatory. Now we're not going to get too much 00:06:59.250 --> 00:07:01.509 into purgatory, but pretty much what purgatory 00:07:01.509 --> 00:07:04.389 was was some of your sin that you had here on 00:07:04.389 --> 00:07:06.089 earth, it still needs to be cleansed from you. 00:07:06.290 --> 00:07:08.269 So you're going to spend time in purgatory and 00:07:08.269 --> 00:07:10.550 once your soul is cleansed all the way through, 00:07:10.850 --> 00:07:13.689 then you'll go to heaven. So they had indulgences, 00:07:13.730 --> 00:07:15.709 and what those indulgences were, you could pray, 00:07:16.089 --> 00:07:17.470 so you wouldn't have to spend too much time in 00:07:17.470 --> 00:07:19.769 purgatory. You could go help the sick, help a 00:07:19.769 --> 00:07:22.129 widow, volunteer at the church. And those are 00:07:22.129 --> 00:07:23.810 good works that you could do to make sure that 00:07:23.810 --> 00:07:26.509 you did not have to spend too much time in purgatory. 00:07:26.850 --> 00:07:29.250 You could also give money. So this is where it 00:07:29.250 --> 00:07:32.769 starts getting pretty corrupt. So let's say Aunt 00:07:32.769 --> 00:07:35.170 Mary passed away. We love Aunt Mary. We don't 00:07:35.170 --> 00:07:37.750 want her to spend too long in purgatory. So the 00:07:37.750 --> 00:07:40.310 priest comes up to us, says, hey, you know, we 00:07:40.310 --> 00:07:43.310 want to do some remodeling on this building. 00:07:43.449 --> 00:07:46.209 If you would fund that, we'd make sure Aunt Mary 00:07:46.209 --> 00:07:48.149 went to heaven a little sooner. She ain't gonna 00:07:48.149 --> 00:07:50.410 spend as much time in purgatory, okay? So they 00:07:50.410 --> 00:07:52.149 would do that. They would take advantage of church 00:07:52.149 --> 00:07:54.110 members. The next thing they would do, let's 00:07:54.110 --> 00:07:58.189 say you did something awful. You did some horrible 00:07:58.189 --> 00:08:00.290 sin. You really hurt someone. Well, you'd go 00:08:00.290 --> 00:08:01.750 to the priest and say, I'm gonna give you this 00:08:01.750 --> 00:08:03.649 amount of money if you make sure I'm not gonna 00:08:03.649 --> 00:08:05.670 spend that long in purgatory. And the church 00:08:05.670 --> 00:08:07.959 would take it. They were taking that money and 00:08:07.959 --> 00:08:10.199 using it for buildings and things like that and 00:08:10.199 --> 00:08:13.199 they were getting very greedy. There was premeditated 00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:15.740 sins. I guess they're all if we kind of think 00:08:15.740 --> 00:08:17.100 about it sometimes before we do it but they would 00:08:17.100 --> 00:08:19.560 go up and go to the priest say I'm gonna do this 00:08:19.560 --> 00:08:21.060 I'm gonna give you this much money but put a 00:08:21.060 --> 00:08:23.899 good word upstairs so I'm not in that much trouble. 00:08:24.399 --> 00:08:26.600 So the church was very corrupt. The church was 00:08:26.600 --> 00:08:29.060 evil. The church was very greedy. They were taking 00:08:29.060 --> 00:08:32.179 money from these people and you may think how 00:08:32.179 --> 00:08:34.299 can this happen? How can the church do that? 00:08:34.340 --> 00:08:36.080 How was no one standing up during this time? 00:08:35.950 --> 00:08:38.149 Now what we need to remember is the church is 00:08:38.149 --> 00:08:41.049 very powerful. The church is intertwined politically 00:08:41.049 --> 00:08:43.509 with governments. James talked about the Pope 00:08:43.509 --> 00:08:46.690 anointed a king. They were very, very powerful. 00:08:46.750 --> 00:08:49.809 They had armies. They were over the universities. 00:08:49.870 --> 00:08:51.529 They told the universities, this is what you're 00:08:51.529 --> 00:08:53.809 going to teach. They had a lot of land. They 00:08:53.809 --> 00:08:55.970 had a lot of wealth. If you went against them, 00:08:56.049 --> 00:08:58.269 you went against them too far, they'd kill you. 00:08:58.610 --> 00:09:02.710 So it was not wise to go up against the church 00:09:02.710 --> 00:09:06.039 at that time. And here's kind of the... through 00:09:06.039 --> 00:09:08.700 my studies it was kind of a sad part your ordinary 00:09:08.700 --> 00:09:11.820 people could not read and write back so they 00:09:11.820 --> 00:09:14.240 went to the church for their information the 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:16.360 church would tell them what they needed to know 00:09:16.360 --> 00:09:18.539 to have books back then you had to be wealthy 00:09:18.539 --> 00:09:20.879 part of a university part of the church to even 00:09:20.879 --> 00:09:22.500 read and write you need to be wealthy part of 00:09:22.500 --> 00:09:26.259 university part of a church to even be able to 00:09:26.259 --> 00:09:28.299 read the bible so they couldn't read back then 00:09:28.299 --> 00:09:30.559 so they went to the church for all their understanding 00:09:30.559 --> 00:09:32.679 but the church was not leading them in the right 00:09:32.679 --> 00:09:35.210 direction Another thing that they would do, they 00:09:35.210 --> 00:09:37.669 would read out of the Latin Vulgate Bible. So 00:09:37.669 --> 00:09:40.169 they would preach out of Latin. If someone was 00:09:40.169 --> 00:09:42.389 teaching back then, they would preach to the 00:09:42.389 --> 00:09:44.309 congregation in Latin. Doesn't sound like a big 00:09:44.309 --> 00:09:46.330 deal, does it? Well, most of the congregation 00:09:46.330 --> 00:09:48.649 didn't speak Latin. So they could not understand 00:09:48.649 --> 00:09:52.470 scripture. They were teaching in a language that 00:09:52.470 --> 00:09:54.769 they could not understand. So they were keeping 00:09:54.769 --> 00:09:57.149 the ordinary people down. You just come talk 00:09:57.149 --> 00:10:04.139 to us and we'll tell you what to do. Let's go 00:10:04.139 --> 00:10:10.879 back online. Pope Innocent III. July 11, 1999, 00:10:10.960 --> 00:10:12.899 he said the secret mysteries of the faith ought 00:10:12.899 --> 00:10:15.580 not to be explained to all men everywhere. It 00:10:15.580 --> 00:10:17.860 says they cannot be understood by all men everywhere, 00:10:18.039 --> 00:10:20.679 but only those who can conceive them with a faithful 00:10:20.679 --> 00:10:22.820 mind. They said ordinary people should not have 00:10:22.820 --> 00:10:25.399 scripture, should not have the Bible, because 00:10:25.399 --> 00:10:28.440 they may interpret it wrong. But the problem 00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:30.340 was the church at this time was interpreting 00:10:30.340 --> 00:10:33.559 the scriptures wrong as well. In Acts 17 and 00:10:33.559 --> 00:10:35.379 11, it says they were more fair -minded than 00:10:35.379 --> 00:10:37.559 those of Thessalonica and that they received 00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:40.220 the word with all readiness and search the scripture 00:10:40.220 --> 00:10:42.620 daily to find out whether these things were so. 00:10:42.700 --> 00:10:45.360 These people, these ordinary people back then 00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:47.559 could not do this. They just had to take someone's 00:10:47.559 --> 00:10:49.460 word for it and that's a pretty sad time for 00:10:49.460 --> 00:10:51.120 them because there was probably a lot of people 00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:53.200 who thought they were doing the right thing and 00:10:53.200 --> 00:10:55.259 wanted to follow God to the best of their ability. 00:10:55.879 --> 00:10:57.919 Okay, so these are the main three points why 00:10:57.919 --> 00:10:59.720 the Reformers said they needed to make a change. 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:01.299 We need to make a change. So let's look at some 00:11:01.299 --> 00:11:03.740 of these Reformers. We're gonna go through this 00:11:03.740 --> 00:11:05.620 rather quickly. None of these guys are apostles 00:11:05.620 --> 00:11:07.700 in the Bible or anything like that. but these 00:11:07.700 --> 00:11:09.759 guys were very brave men and they did something 00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:11.659 that could have cost them their lives, some of 00:11:11.659 --> 00:11:13.639 these guys that did cost them their lives. So 00:11:13.639 --> 00:11:16.159 we got John Wycliffe. He was from England. He 00:11:16.159 --> 00:11:18.019 was said to be the morning star of the Reformation. 00:11:18.100 --> 00:11:21.159 He started before our time period in 1518, but 00:11:21.159 --> 00:11:23.620 it said his work laid the groundwork for the 00:11:23.620 --> 00:11:26.279 Reformation movement. This man argued that scripture 00:11:26.279 --> 00:11:28.679 was the highest authority, not the pope. He criticized 00:11:28.679 --> 00:11:32.700 the enormous wealth and power of the church and 00:11:32.700 --> 00:11:35.179 the corruption. One thing that was big in the 00:11:35.179 --> 00:11:37.419 church, the Eucharist, it was a thing called 00:11:37.419 --> 00:11:40.059 transubstantiation. And that's when you take 00:11:40.059 --> 00:11:43.679 communion, you're literally eating Christ's body 00:11:43.679 --> 00:11:45.580 and drinking his blood. He was against that. 00:11:45.600 --> 00:11:47.259 He said it's more of a memorial and we'll look 00:11:47.259 --> 00:11:49.759 at that a little bit later. He was called to 00:11:49.759 --> 00:11:53.600 come up in front of a council. And he was pretty 00:11:53.600 --> 00:11:55.740 much going to be told to recount what you're 00:11:55.740 --> 00:11:57.820 preaching. And if he wouldn't have recounted, 00:11:57.820 --> 00:11:59.120 he would have been killed. But he died before 00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:03.080 he could do that. Later on, they actually dug 00:12:03.080 --> 00:12:05.879 him up and burned him and threw his ashes down 00:12:05.879 --> 00:12:08.379 by a river so no one could come and see his grave. 00:12:08.899 --> 00:12:12.559 This led us to Jan Hus about 1370 -1450. He was 00:12:12.559 --> 00:12:16.059 heavily influenced by Wycliffe. He also condemned 00:12:16.059 --> 00:12:18.340 the corruption and indulgences and the power 00:12:18.340 --> 00:12:21.120 of the pope. And he also argued church leaders 00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:23.559 were not above Scripture. If Scripture tells 00:12:23.559 --> 00:12:25.159 us that we need to make correction in our life 00:12:25.159 --> 00:12:27.340 we should do it. So the problem then was the 00:12:27.340 --> 00:12:29.600 Pope was the ultimate authority and there was 00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:34.019 a little saying back then or it was in a writing 00:12:34.019 --> 00:12:36.259 it said the Pope cannot be judged by man but 00:12:36.259 --> 00:12:39.039 only by God. So he was not going to have to do 00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:41.120 the same things, the confession or anything like 00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:44.600 that. So he said even these top people in his 00:12:44.600 --> 00:12:47.279 hierarchy, they need to be held to the same standard. 00:12:47.340 --> 00:12:49.179 There was a lot of sexual immorality, greed, 00:12:49.360 --> 00:12:51.539 and taking advantage of people back then. He 00:12:51.539 --> 00:12:53.340 had to go to the council of consonants to defend 00:12:53.340 --> 00:12:55.559 his teaching. He was told to recount. He said, 00:12:55.580 --> 00:13:02.009 I'm not doing it. In July 6... 1415, he was burned 00:13:02.009 --> 00:13:04.590 at a stake and killed. This may be the most important 00:13:09.889 --> 00:13:15.950 person in the entire Reformation movement. He 00:13:15.950 --> 00:13:18.490 wasn't trying to reform or anything like that, 00:13:18.529 --> 00:13:20.750 but what he did, he created the printing press. 00:13:21.269 --> 00:13:24.429 So this was huge. No one had Bibles back then, 00:13:24.649 --> 00:13:26.590 except for the wealthy, the university, and the 00:13:26.590 --> 00:13:28.549 church. And the reason was it took so long to 00:13:28.549 --> 00:13:31.250 hand write a Bible. A monk back then in a monastery 00:13:31.250 --> 00:13:33.929 could write about seven pages a day. And when 00:13:33.929 --> 00:13:36.110 this guy came along, you could do about 3 ,600 00:13:36.110 --> 00:13:38.289 pages a day. So what do we know when it's mass 00:13:38.289 --> 00:13:40.529 produced? It becomes cheaper. More people can 00:13:40.529 --> 00:13:42.450 take advantage of it. He was an Anabaptist, 00:16:43.799 --> 00:16:46.139 and that means re -baptizer. So all these other 00:16:46.139 --> 00:16:47.740 guys in the Reformation, they still believed 00:16:47.740 --> 00:16:49.980 in infant baptism. This guy said you need to 00:16:49.980 --> 00:16:51.580 be of a certain age where you can actually hear 00:16:51.580 --> 00:16:54.360 the gospel, believe it, repent, confess, and 00:16:54.360 --> 00:16:57.500 then be baptized. So this was a big deal back 00:16:57.500 --> 00:17:00.929 then. They were persecuted heavily by the Catholic 00:17:00.929 --> 00:17:03.809 Church and by the other Protestants. There was 00:17:03.809 --> 00:17:05.430 a group of them and they were told, if you don't 00:17:05.430 --> 00:17:07.609 start baptizing your children, you're all gonna 00:17:07.609 --> 00:17:09.890 be killed. And there was a few guys there, they 00:17:09.890 --> 00:17:12.410 said, well, I wanna be baptized the right way 00:17:12.410 --> 00:17:14.650 in full immersion. They went down, were baptized, 00:17:14.750 --> 00:17:16.990 they ended up dispersing. And a bunch of them 00:17:16.990 --> 00:17:19.670 got caught up with and about 5 ,000 people of 00:17:19.670 --> 00:17:22.470 the Anabaptists were killed during this time. 00:17:23.670 --> 00:17:26.480 What's funny to this is, The Catholic Church 00:17:26.480 --> 00:17:28.980 put a bounty on Luther's head to kill him because 00:17:28.980 --> 00:17:31.140 he was going to get their teachings. Well, Luther 00:17:31.140 --> 00:17:35.380 signed an official 1531 theological opinion stating 00:17:35.380 --> 00:17:37.640 that stubborn Anabaptists who taught against 00:17:37.640 --> 00:17:40.480 infant baptism or civil order deserve capital 00:17:40.480 --> 00:17:43.039 punishment. So what the church was doing to him, 00:17:43.079 --> 00:17:44.960 he turned around to the other reformers even 00:17:44.960 --> 00:17:46.720 though he was the one who got this whole thing 00:17:46.720 --> 00:17:49.339 started. So he went back to some of that as well. 00:17:49.359 --> 00:17:51.380 So these guys are not perfect. He came up with 00:17:56.920 --> 00:17:59.940 the tulip. He was very strict. He was over Geneva, 00:18:00.359 --> 00:18:03.900 and he was very strict at this time. There was 00:18:03.900 --> 00:18:06.299 punishments if you were caught gambling, drinking, 00:18:06.380 --> 00:18:08.220 if you had different religious beliefs, if you 00:18:08.220 --> 00:18:10.579 miss church, he would send guys to your front 00:18:10.579 --> 00:18:12.740 door. You know, we probably wouldn't miss church. 00:18:13.000 --> 00:18:14.579 That sniffle wouldn't be that big of a deal, 00:18:14.660 --> 00:18:16.599 would it? So he would do that. There was different 00:18:16.599 --> 00:18:19.799 punishments that you could receive, fines. You 00:18:19.799 --> 00:18:21.579 may not be able to take communion, imprisonment, 00:18:21.619 --> 00:18:24.150 management, and death. Through this time, there's 00:18:24.150 --> 00:18:26.809 about 57 deaths and 76 banishments. They faced heavy heavy criticism So 00:18:42.549 --> 00:18:44.869 we need to look at them as they did something 00:18:44.869 --> 00:18:47.369 very brave, but they weren't exactly riding all 00:18:47.369 --> 00:18:49.289 their teachings So let's jump into some of the 00:18:49.289 --> 00:18:52.130 doctrinal issues So features of the churches 00:18:52.130 --> 00:18:54.529 during the Reformation era, they went to a different 00:18:54.529 --> 00:18:56.609 source of authority. They went to soulless scripture. 00:18:57.289 --> 00:18:59.329 Sounds good. If the Bible says to do it, we're 00:18:59.329 --> 00:19:01.569 gonna do it. But the problem was they went to 00:19:01.569 --> 00:19:03.210 another direction. They said, if it doesn't say 00:19:03.210 --> 00:19:05.410 not to do it, we could still probably do it, 00:19:05.410 --> 00:19:07.630 okay? So that's not what the Bible teaches in 00:19:07.630 --> 00:19:10.809 Revelation chapter 22, 18 through 19. It says, 00:19:10.930 --> 00:19:12.869 for I testify to everyone who hears the words 00:19:12.869 --> 00:19:15.390 of the prophecy of this book, if anyone adds 00:19:15.390 --> 00:19:17.710 to these things, God will add him the plagues 00:19:17.710 --> 00:19:19.750 which are written in this book. And if anyone 00:19:19.750 --> 00:19:21.990 takes away from the words of the book of this 00:19:21.990 --> 00:19:24.210 prophecy, God shall take away his part from the 00:19:24.210 --> 00:19:26.609 book of life, from the holy city, and from the 00:19:26.609 --> 00:19:28.720 things which are written in this book. So they had two principles 00:19:40.400 --> 00:19:43.240 they used, regulative principle, only doing worship, 00:19:43.299 --> 00:19:46.220 church practice, what scripture authorizes, and 00:19:46.220 --> 00:19:47.920 normative principle, anything scripture does 00:19:47.920 --> 00:19:51.579 not forbid, we may permit. Okay, so what's an 00:19:51.579 --> 00:19:54.259 example of this? Infant baptism, the scripture 00:19:54.259 --> 00:19:56.039 doesn't say anything about it. But we know you're supposed 00:19:57.819 --> 00:19:59.299 to be fully immersed and you're supposed to be 00:19:59.299 --> 00:20:02.309 able to understand the gospel call, right? Well, 00:20:02.309 --> 00:20:04.230 they would go back, and we'll talk about a little 00:20:04.230 --> 00:20:06.289 bit total depravity, kind of what Calvin came 00:20:06.289 --> 00:20:09.009 up with, and what all these, most of these reformers 00:20:09.009 --> 00:20:10.990 thought is children are born into sin because 00:20:10.990 --> 00:20:13.980 of Adam and Eve's sin. So it doesn't say we shouldn't 00:20:13.980 --> 00:20:16.019 baptize, but it looks like it would probably 00:20:16.019 --> 00:20:17.799 be a good idea because we're born into sin, so 00:20:17.799 --> 00:20:20.019 let's go ahead and baptize them so they'll be 00:20:20.019 --> 00:20:22.680 saved if they die, okay? That was an example 00:20:22.680 --> 00:20:24.660 of kind of what they did. They also, Swingly, 00:20:25.180 --> 00:20:28.759 the Swiss Reformation guy, he was big on no statues, 00:20:28.880 --> 00:20:32.619 no stained glass windows. He didn't like the 00:20:32.619 --> 00:20:34.519 garments the guys wore when they preached. He 00:20:34.519 --> 00:20:36.579 said, we ain't doing none of that. Luther said, 00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:38.680 some of this stuff's okay so we can keep it. 00:20:39.000 --> 00:20:40.519 So you know what we start seeing here? Luther went 00:23:29.259 --> 00:23:31.380 to territory ruler, a prince or a king. They 00:23:31.380 --> 00:23:34.019 stayed intertwined with the government. So there's 00:23:34.019 --> 00:23:36.299 government laws in here with the church laws. 00:23:36.940 --> 00:23:39.559 Calvin, he had a national regional assembly. 00:23:40.640 --> 00:23:42.940 There was a monarch, supreme governor for the 00:23:42.940 --> 00:23:44.799 Church of England. Acts 00:24:11.630 --> 00:24:14.750 14 23 it says so when they had appointed elders 00:24:14.750 --> 00:24:17.009 in every church and prayed with fasting They 00:24:17.009 --> 00:24:19.630 condemned them to the Lord in whom they had believed 00:24:19.630 --> 00:24:21.789 we see Christ's recipe that we're supposed to 00:24:21.789 --> 00:24:23.750 be Autonomous and have elders in every church 00:24:23.750 --> 00:24:25.630 and that's the leaders of the church and then 00:24:25.630 --> 00:24:28.809 Christ is that ultimate authority All right process 00:24:28.809 --> 00:24:30.890 of salvation. But this is something 00:24:52.789 --> 00:24:56.630 that from the beginning of this Reformation movement, 00:24:56.710 --> 00:24:59.970 it was a huge debate. All right, so Martin Luther, 00:25:00.210 --> 00:25:02.529 he is known as the father of faith alone. And 00:25:02.529 --> 00:25:05.089 I really want to look at this real quick. He 00:25:05.089 --> 00:25:07.029 did not believe faith alone means you don't have 00:25:07.029 --> 00:25:09.579 to follow Christ's commandments. And that's huge. 00:25:10.099 --> 00:25:12.819 He said, faith alone, I have the faith that Jesus' 00:25:12.900 --> 00:25:15.259 blood saves me and that I don't need to go give 00:25:15.259 --> 00:25:19.119 money to someone to take care of my sins, okay? 00:25:19.279 --> 00:25:22.319 He was against those indulgences. That if I pray 00:25:22.319 --> 00:25:24.980 harder, if I do more good works, then I'm gonna 00:25:24.980 --> 00:25:27.180 be saved even better. And you know, that's what 00:25:27.180 --> 00:25:29.380 we believe today. You're supposed to have good 00:25:29.380 --> 00:25:32.099 works, but we're not gonna pray any harder to 00:25:32.099 --> 00:25:35.839 be saved. It's the blood of Christ. So what the reformers thought back then 00:35:28.860 --> 00:35:30.380 was that they could take the church and they 00:35:30.380 --> 00:35:32.219 could remodel it. They could fix what was wrong 00:35:32.219 --> 00:35:34.659 with it. And that we could keep this church the 00:35:34.659 --> 00:35:37.280 same. The problem was the church was so far gone 00:35:37.280 --> 00:35:39.320 that they couldn't do that. And what we see, 00:35:39.380 --> 00:35:41.519 most of these guys decided that they could do 00:35:41.519 --> 00:35:43.559 that. They kept some of those old traditions 00:35:43.559 --> 00:35:46.500 and some of the old doctrinal things of the old 00:35:46.500 --> 00:35:48.730 church. It did not line up. with what the New 00:35:48.730 --> 00:35:52.510 Testament or what Jesus' recipe was for the church 00:35:52.510 --> 00:35:56.030 at this time. So they could not do that. So go 00:35:56.030 --> 00:35:58.030 back to my second question. So they started 00:36:50.409 --> 00:36:53.710 doing the exact same thing as the earlier church 00:36:53.710 --> 00:36:56.510 did. So they did not do a really good job of 00:36:56.510 --> 00:36:58.889 reforming anything. They kind of just put themselves 00:36:58.889 --> 00:37:01.889 up in that space of the Pope. And we see this 00:37:01.889 --> 00:37:03.710 throughout the scripture in 1 Corinthians 1, 00:37:03.710 --> 00:37:06.030 12, 13. Paul's talking here. He says, now I say 00:37:06.030 --> 00:37:08.989 this, that each of you says, I am a Paul, and 00:37:08.989 --> 00:37:11.849 I am of Apollos, and I am of Cephas, and I am 00:37:11.849 --> 00:37:14.389 of Christ.
