0:00 in June 2021 devout Christian me Kwan 0:03 Chong also known as Deborah vanished 0:06 Without a Trace friends had no idea what 0:09 to do in this situation this was 0:11 extremely out of character for her and 0:13 Deborah was a vulnerable woman but just 0:15 as the investigation began to heat up a 0:18 harrowing Discovery was made and a long 0:20 series of disturbing surveillance camera 0:22 clips would lead authorities to a 0:24 cold-hearted killer 0:26 this video covers a True Crime Story 0:28 that wrapped up only one week ago here 0:30 in the UK and covers the first woman to 0:33 have her sentencing broadcast live on 0:34 television good morning good afternoon 0:36 or good evening folks my name is Adrian 0:38 and welcome back to another video by 0:40 coffeehouse crime today we're 1:04 [Music] Mee Kuen Chong, London 1:10 welcome back to England folks our story 1:13 today takes us to the northwest of 1:15 London when you hear the name Wembley 1:17 one thing often Springs to mind Wembley 1:19 Stadium is the king of all landmarks in 1:21 the local area but there is much more to 1:24 the old suburb of London than you may 1:25 think Wembley has been around for 1:28 hundreds of years derived from the old 1:30 English name Wembley meaning Wemba 1:32 Meadow the village of Wembley started in 1:34 1547 with only six houses since then it 1:38 has grown to one of London's largest 1:39 suburbs with a population of just over 1:41 100 000 residents but Wembley has had 1:45 its fair share of hardships too its 1:47 place in London's economy started to 1:49 become less relevant after the second 1:51 world war in which more than 9 000 bombs 1:53 had damaged over half of all residential 1:55 homes in the area in fact bombs are 1:58 still being found to this very day and 2:00 in May 2015 Builders working near 2:03 Wembley Stadium found a 50 kilogram bomb 2:05 which still posed a severe risk to life 2:07 no worries This was later safely dead 2:10 United Stark reminders aside Wembley's 2:13 position still makes it an extremely 2:15 expensive place to live and even the 2:17 cheaper houses here often sell for over 2:19 1 million pounds or 1.2 million dollars 2:21 nevertheless it's here that we find the 2:24 home and life of me quenchon who went by 2:26 the nickname Debra mikuen Chong was a 2:29 Malaysian at heart she was born and 2:31 raised in Kuala Lumpur but eventually 2:33 she moved to the United Kingdom moving 2:35 to the area of Wembley in 2004 Deborah 2:38 shared her two-story home on Chaplin 2:40 road with a lodger she was a 2:42 congregation member at the Emmanuel 2:43 Center Church in edgeware located around 2:45 six miles north of her home and being a 2:48 devout Christian she regularly attended 2:49 church services and holy spirit evenings 2:52 neighbors described the Lively Woman as 2:54 a Centric but Pleasant she regularly 2:57 went around her neighbor's homes for tea 2:58 in the chats and being a church and 3:00 choir fanatic she could often be heard 3:02 singing throughout the house 3:04 being an active member of the church 3:05 Deborah met many people over the years 3:07 which of course helped to integrate into 3:09 the local community of Wembley socially 3:11 speaking this did very well for her and 3:13 being an extroverted woman that she was 3:15 many of those she eventually crossed 3:17 paths with became friends but not 3:19 everything was going well in Deborah's 3:21 life and unfortunately she suffered from 3:23 several mental health issues and was 3:24 diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia 3:26 and acute stress now luckily Deborah did 3:29 have several people she could rely on 3:31 and although none of her family lived 3:33 nearby she did have a lodger and several 3:35 friends from the church and one of those Gemma Mitchell 3:37 she became close with was a 38 year old 3:39 woman who went by the name of Gemma 3:41 Mitchell 3:42 previously living in Australia for seven 3:44 years Gemma Mitchell was an osteopath 3:46 that decided to move back to the UK in 3:48 2015. her mother and sister lived nearby 3:51 in Brent just north of Wembley and so 3:53 with that said she decided to move in 3:55 with them now Gemma is from a relatively 3:58 affluent background the young woman was 4:00 privately educated before she enrolled 4:02 in King's College London where she 4:03 graduated with a degree in human 4:05 Sciences including a course in 4:07 experimental Anatomy the family used to 4:09 have strong finances too her mother used 4:12 to work in the British foreign office in 4:13 Australia and the family home in London 4:15 is estimated to be worth around 4 4:17 million pounds or 5 million dollars but 4:20 unfortunately they seemed to have fallen 4:22 on more challenging times the house was 4:24 now mostly derelict and needed urgent 4:27 repairs Gemma considered herself to be a 4:29 committed devout Christian something 4:31 that Deborah also labeled herself as and 4:34 you can probably guess this is how both 4:35 of them had met it was through the 4:37 church in August 2020. unfortunately 4:40 Gemma couldn't work as an Osteopath the 4:42 United Kingdom with no legitimate 4:44 transfer between Australian or British 4:46 practices she was basically left without 4:48 a job however after becoming close with 4:51 Deborah Gemma offered her Services as a 4:53 spiritual healer to help combat her 4:55 mental health conditions Deborah's declining health... 4:57 now obviously this was not going to do 4:59 anything to help Deborah's ongoing 5:00 issues and since her schizophrenia 5:02 seemed to be worsening she was 5:04 prescribed stronger medication by the 5:06 spring of 2021 those around her 5:08 described her to be vulnerable and prone 5:10 to erratic behavior and in the recent 5:12 months she'd become obsessed with Prince 5:14 Charles and Boris Johnson it's quite a 5:17 sad story when you think about it but 5:18 Deborah had a parasocial relationship 5:20 with Prince Charles and believed she 5:22 could talk to him through YouTube videos 5:24 Deborah often set the dinner table for 5:26 Prince Charles and Boris Johnson as if 5:28 they were going to appear any moment and 5:30 after sending them several bizarre 5:32 letters a mental health referral was 5:33 made after being enrolled into a 5:35 healthcare facility for a fortnight she 5:37 was prescribed a new course of 5:39 medication and although she didn't want 5:41 to take it her friends persuaded her 5:42 otherwise now for the most part life 5:44 returned back to normal after this and 5:47 although friends were concerned for 5:48 Deborah's mental health some was right 5:50 around the corner and there were sunnier 5:52 days to look forward to but summer would 5:54 never arrive for Deborah as on June 11 5:57 2021 she suddenly disappeared June 11th, 2021, to Salcombe... 6:06 on June 11 2021 Deborah's lodger became 6:10 alarmed when he could no longer find or 6:12 contact her and with the current status 6:14 of her mental health he knew it was wise 6:16 to inform authorities immediately 6:18 Deborah's lodger had seen her the very 6:20 day prior so she couldn't have been gone 6:22 for very long surveillance footage 6:24 recorded on June the 9th 2021 confirmed 6:27 this showing Deborah walking down 6:29 Chapman Road while being accompanied by 6:31 him it was noted that the older woman 6:33 couldn't walk very well so if she were 6:35 on the run it would have been difficult 6:37 for her to avoid transports as the days 6:40 passed it became more evident that 6:42 something unusual had happened to 6:44 Deborah she had never disappeared like 6:46 this before and with a mental health and 6:48 physical issues this painted a very 6:50 concerning picture to authorities but 6:53 despite Deborah's silence not everyone 6:55 else was it was Gemma that informed the 6:58 lodger that Deborah had returned home to 7:00 Malaysia to spend time with her family 7:01 according to Gemma Deborah had planned 7:04 to return home for a year to clear her 7:06 heads now this didn't sit well with 7:08 officers to get to Malaysia Deborah 7:10 would have likely taken a flight back 7:12 but no activity had been recorded on her 7:15 passport 7:16 to add to this there were no sightings 7:18 of her leaving a house no local taxi 7:20 companies had given her a lift and no 7:22 Bank activity suggested that she took 7:24 any public transport days turned into 7:27 weeks and still no confirmed sightings 7:30 of Deborah were reported but after 16 7:32 days missing and just as investigations 7:34 began to heat up a very gruesome 7:37 Discovery had been made located 200 7:40 miles away from Wembley lies a small 7:42 coastal town named Salcombe and honestly 7:45 there is not much to say about it salcom 7:47 is found in south Devon and sports 7:49 beautiful beaches and Lush Countryside 7:51 and as you can probably guess many 7:54 people visit the area as tourists but it 7:57 just turns out that one woman visiting 7:59 the area on holiday had discovered 8:01 something much more than she had 8:02 bargained for 8:03 on June 27 2021 the woman was walking 8:07 with her family through wooded area 8:08 along Bennett Road in Salcombe and that 8:11 is when upon walking down the bottom of 8:13 some old Mossy steps she found a 8:15 nightmarish scene lying nearby was a 8:18 decomposing body and the head was 8:20 missing 8:22 emergency EMERGENCY CALL 8:29 and I just found her body 8:32 like okay a body is it are they 8:34 breathing no they're dead they look like 8:37 this um possibly been there like a few 8:39 days or something 8:41 like okay bear me a second let's pop 8:43 this on lots of age yeah what road are 8:46 you on 8:47 and then Falcon you're inside I'm sorry 8:52 yep let me have a look I can populate 8:54 hopefully where you are so 8:57 um Bennett Road are you quite near the 8:58 harbor 9:00 and we're up from North and Beach and 9:03 hang on which is a caregiver Mall okay 9:05 yeah so I can see North Santa Fe Road 9:07 Bennett Road yeah you are on Bennett 9:09 Road authorities were called immediately 9:11 and soon after arriving forensic Early Investigations, who REALLY is Gemma? 9:13 officers found the body had been dumped 9:15 with the church business card and 9:16 excerpts from the Bible sadly it was 9:19 soon learned that the body belonged to 9:20 me Kwan Chong also known as Deborah and 9:23 due to the degree of decomposition a 9:25 post-mortem examination could not 9:27 determine the cause of her death what it 9:29 could confirm though is that she had 9:31 suffered a skull fracture along with 9:32 several other injuries consistent with 9:34 an assault and that ahead had not been 9:35 removed by animal activity Pathologists 9:38 also estimated that Deborah had been 9:40 dead for roughly two weeks which matched 9:42 the time frame of a disappearance so 9:44 with the case now classed as a homicide 9:46 investigators ramped up their efforts to 9:48 find her killer and surprisingly it 9:51 didn't take long for them to find a 9:52 potential suspect 9:55 surveillance footage surrounding 9:57 Deborah's home revealed some very 9:59 alarming movements and as officers 10:01 scoped all friends who knew of Deborah 10:03 they started to set their sights on 10:05 Gemma now while still alive Deborah 10:08 often held spiritual sessions in her 10:09 garden and Gemma was often there with 10:12 her in fact many friends claimed that 10:14 Deborah had told them that Gemma and 10:16 Jesus were healing her the two women 10:18 were close to one another or at least 10:21 until the week before Deborah 10:22 disappeared apparently the two had 10:25 recently fallen out over money and of 10:27 course this intrigued officers but 10:29 parking the story here for just a moment 10:31 let's focus on who Gemma really is as a 10:34 person 10:35 studying and then working in osteopathy 10:38 in Australia she claimed on a 10:40 professional website that she was 10:41 attuned to subjects in your Anatomy 10:43 genetics and dissection of human 10:45 cadavers and as said before but after 10:48 she returned to England in 2015 she 10:50 could no longer continue in her field of 10:52 profession and as a result she has not 10:54 worked anywhere else ever since although 10:57 Gemma was living with her mother at the 10:58 family home in Brent the house 11:00 desperately needed repair the rooms were 11:03 reportedly crammed full of broken 11:04 furniture and trash and some were 11:06 impossible to enter there were boxes and 11:09 suitcases freezers full of foods old 11:11 mattresses and building materials 11:13 everywhere the kitchen was described as 11:15 dirty with rotting food all over the 11:18 stove and various pieces of paperwork 11:20 covered all of its surfaces 11:22 the second floor of the property was 11:24 under renovation with the walls and 11:26 ceilings incomplete and the property had 11:28 no roof the bathroom was stained and in 11:30 a poor state of repair and the place 11:32 looked like a hoarder's residence and 11:34 this is where Deborah and Gemma begin to 11:36 clash now Gemma urgently needed money to 11:39 repair the family home and apparently 11:41 Deborah promised to give her 200 Grand 11:43 to help but Deborah had a change of 11:46 hearts and eventually she told Gemma to 11:48 sell the house and enjoy the money as 11:50 life is too short and in a follow-up 11:52 message she said to Gemma that more 11:54 construction will cost more money money 11:56 that she already doesn't have there was 11:58 nothing binding Deborah to pay Gemma the 12:00 money and quite frankly who in the world 12:03 gives their friend two hundred thousand 12:04 pounds for nothing in return and as you 12:07 can probably guess this is where the 12:09 relationship turned sour and over the 12:11 following days Gemma became more pushy 12:13 and more aggressive towards Deborah 12:15 but on June the 8th 2021 Deborah finally 12:19 had enough 12:20 she sent a text message to Gemma saying 12:22 the following until you've sold the 12:24 house I don't want you to come to me or 12:27 my house I'm stressed to the core and of 12:30 course just three days after this she 12:32 disappeared 12:34 thankfully a myriad of surveillance 12:36 cameras fill in all the gaps of this 12:37 time frame at 6 15 am on the morning of SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE 12:40 June the 11th Gemma can be seen leaving 12:42 her derelict's property with a suitcase 12:44 and a backpack and at the time she was 12:47 wearing a hat by 6 40 AM she had changed 12:50 clothes put a face covering on and 12:52 placed the backpack inside the suitcase 12:54 this surveillance footage captures her 12:56 moving in the direction of Deborah's 12:57 home at 7 56 am the Hat was off however 13:01 she can still be seen with the suitcase 13:03 and the face mask 13:05 we can only guess that over the next 13:07 four hours Deborah was tragically 13:09 murdered because at 12 59 PM gem is 13:12 again captured by surveillance camera 13:13 this time with the two suitcases in hand 13:16 both of them appeared to be quite heavy 13:19 as she struggled to Lug both of them 13:20 around the smaller bag likely contained 13:23 Deborah's personal and financial 13:24 paperwork which were necessary items for 13:27 Gemma as she intended to use this 13:29 paperwork to forge a well 13:31 she then called a taxi to drive her and 13:33 the two suitcases back towards her 13:35 address but as seen in this transcript 13:37 she would have to wait a total of 40 13:39 minutes until they could pick her up and 13:42 by 4 16 in the afternoon she had 13:44 returned home with a large Blue suitcase 13:46 back in hand later that evening Gemma 13:49 traveled to send Thomas's Hospital 13:50 located in central London to be treated 13:52 for a broken finger she claimed to the 13:55 doctors that she'd accidentally shut it 13:57 in a door 13:58 over the following days and in an 14:00 attempt to cover up the crime Gemma then 14:02 made several fraudulent emails to a 14:04 missing person's Charity she even sent a 14:07 WhatsApp message to Deborah's lodger to 14:08 say that she had left the country to 14:10 visit her family 14:11 fast forward several days and Gemma was 14:14 back on the road on June 26th at 8 05 in 14:17 the morning a surveillance camera 14:19 crossed the road from her house recorded 14:21 her loading the suitcase into a gray 14:22 Volvo the gray Volvo wasn't her own car 14:25 she had rented it from a vehicle rental 14:27 company the very night prior 14:29 to add to her cunning and sneaky plan 14:32 Gemma then reactivated the phone number 14:34 of a neighborhood recently died and took 14:36 it with her as her own source of 14:37 communication leaving her own phone at 14:39 home in a stark attempt to dupe 14:41 investigators 14:43 on the way down to Salcombe she stopped 14:45 at a petrol station where a surveillance 14:47 camera captured her walking into the 14:49 shop and after traveling 200 miles 14:51 Southwest to the coastal town she then 14:53 parked her car near Bennett Road at 14:55 approximately 9 12 p.m she then dumped 14:58 the body and was then seen leaving the 15:00 area by the same camera 41 minutes later 15:03 now despite being caught by several 15:05 surveillance cameras Gemma thought her 15:07 plan was going pretty well but there was 15:10 one part to her elaborate scheme that 15:11 not even she could predict on her way 15:14 back to London her rented vehicle blew a 15:16 tire and she was therefore forced to 15:18 drive into a service station and call 15:20 for assistance a repairman named Lee 15:22 Garden was called to change the wheel on 15:24 her car and to this day he can still 15:26 recall his bizarre encounter with a 15:28 woman she appeared to be confused 15:30 severely distracted and insisted that he 15:32 must not go into the boot of her car let 15:34 alone place a tire in there to add to 15:37 this she wanted to keep the old Flats 15:38 higher Lee also said that an odd smell 15:41 came from the vehicle it was a musty 15:43 smell as if someone had slept in there 15:45 overnight without any ventilation and 15:48 unfortunately he didn't know this at the 15:50 time but that was the smell of death 15:53 after having her tire fixed Gemma then 15:55 returned home where she returned the 15:57 Volvo and then dumped the blue suitcase 15:59 on the roof of a shed belonging to one 16:01 of her neighbors the very next day 16:03 Deborah's decapitated body was 16:05 discovered it would take authorities a 16:07 further five days to locate her skull 16:09 the evidence before Gemma was pretty 16:11 damning to say the least and following 16:14 all of this information authorities 16:16 decided to pay her a little visit at 16:17 quarter to midnight Arrest, search, findings 16:19 foreign 16:31 there's no answer 16:34 sorry what's your name 16:46 all right Gemma at this moment I'm 16:49 resting on the suspicion of murder okay 16:51 you don't have to say anything but you 16:52 might have a defense don't mention one 16:53 question someone with you later rely on 16:55 quite anything you do say don't be given 16:57 the evidence okay I want to run to cuffs 16:59 inside 17:07 who's inside at the moment um your 17:09 mother yeah okay 17:11 if you wanna oh someone left that up 17:13 yeah let's sit back inside is anyone 17:15 else inside just your mum yeah there is 17:18 someone else inside yeah all right do 17:20 you wanna should I bring her or bring 17:22 her in bring it we're just gonna come in 17:23 for a sec okay 17:25 after taking her into custody 17:27 investigators locked the house down and 17:29 searched for any evidence that could 17:30 link Deborah to her Killer Inside they 17:33 found her personal and financial 17:34 documents and a forged will that had 17:36 been created on gemma's computer on this 17:39 will gem had named herself and her 17:41 mother as the beneficiaries of Deborah's 17:43 entire estate which at the time was 17:45 valued around seven hundred thousand 17:47 pounds or eight hundred thousand dollars 17:49 authorities were clearly ready to 17:51 interrogate her as only two days later 17:53 they began their first formal interview 17:55 with her one which was stacked with a 17:57 mountain of evidence and questions INTERROGATION FOOTAGE 18:00 and they've said that the person 18:03 driving a Volvo waited in the car all 18:08 that time 18:10 with the windows down 18:11 and the front door opens the passenger 18:14 door open 18:16 when it was literally chucking it down 18:18 with rain and it was windy 18:21 why is that Gemma 18:24 the cars thanked didn't it Gemma 18:28 stunk of a dead person 18:30 no comments stunk of Deborah's 18:33 decomposing body 18:40 is that right Gemma 18:44 now is it just me or can you really feel 18:47 the sassy anger building up in her cold 18:49 heart towards the end there unless Gemma 18:51 had a very logical reason as to why she 18:53 hauled a suitcase to Deborah's and then 18:55 back to her own home and then down to 18:57 Devon where Deborah's body was found she 19:00 was legally screwed at this point in Legal Proceedings 19:02 today's world there is an estimated 950 19:05 000 surveillance cameras across London 19:07 city so how she thought making a 12-mile 19:10 trip on foot with the suitcase would 19:12 work is absolutely Beyond me I'm sure 19:14 she realized at one point that there was 19:16 no hope in hell should come back from 19:18 this and throughout all interviews she 19:20 remained silent refusing to give her own 19:22 version of the story despite her refusal 19:25 to communicate her trial began more than 19:27 one year later on October the 11th 2022 19:30 proceedings took place in courtroom 12 19:32 of the old bayley the case was 19:34 prosecuted by Diana here and defended by 19:37 Richard Jory while the trial itself was 19:39 presided over by judge Richard Marx 19:41 not only did Gemma Mitchell deny 19:44 murdering Deborah but she also declined 19:46 to give evidence on her defense her 19:48 defense team argued that there was no 19:50 evidence to support the claim that 19:51 Deborah's body had been stored in the 19:53 suitcase due to the lack of DNA evidence 19:55 while there was also no evidence of a 19:57 struggle at Deborah's house 19:59 the court was told that the injuries to 20:01 her skull could have been sustained 20:03 either by being pushed onto a surface or 20:05 by a weapon but ultimately no weapon was 20:07 found at the crime scene or Deborah's 20:09 home no surprise but the motive was 20:11 money the prosecution argued that Gemma 20:14 Mitchell killed me kwen Chong and then 20:16 forged her will to get money to pay for 20:18 house repairs a distinct level of 20:20 callousness came to light and was noted 20:22 that between the time of Deborah's 20:24 murder and a trip to Salcombe Gemma went 20:26 on a date to London Zoo with someone she 20:28 had met online it is worth noting again 20:31 that Gemma graduated with a human 20:32 Sciences degree including a course in 20:35 experimental Anatomy this means that she 20:37 actually did have the skills to 20:39 dismember a head from her body although 20:41 it's not clear why she did 20:43 it didn't take long for the jury to come 20:45 to a decision because following seven 20:47 hours of deliberation on October 27 2022 20:51 Gemma Mitchell was formally found guilty 20:53 of the murder of me Kwan Chong Gemma 20:56 sentence made national headlines due to 20:58 a change in UK law the trial sentencing 21:01 phase was televised making Gemma the 21:03 first convicted murderer in England and 21:05 Wales to be sentenced on live television 21:06 and the first woman in the UK to have 21:09 her sentence filmed 21:10 sentence of the court is one of life 21:13 imprisonment 21:15 and the minimum term of imprisonment 21:17 that you will in any event be required 21:20 to serve will be 34 years 21:23 you've set off early from your home 21:25 address 21:27 taking with you a large suitcase 21:30 which was evident from the CCTV 21:34 was either empty or had very little in 21:38 it 21:39 you went by public transport to her 21:42 address and you stayed there for over 21:44 five hours 21:46 suitcase that you had taken to the house 21:50 was now 21:51 very obviously full and heavy 21:56 I have no doubt that you had killed her 21:58 whilst you were at her house 22:01 and absent any explanation from you 22:06 given that you weren't no comment 22:08 throughout your police interviews and 22:11 did not go into the witness box 22:13 I am driven to the conclusion that he 22:17 went to her house that morning 22:19 with that intention in mind you have 22:23 shown absolutely no remorse and it 22:26 appears that you are in complete denial 22:29 as to what you did 22:32 notwithstanding what in my judgment 22:35 amounted to overwhelming evidence 22:38 against you the sentence was life Sidenotes 22:40 imprisonment with a minimum term of 34 22:42 years this means she will not be 22:44 eligible for parole until the 10th of 22:46 July 2055. 22:49 during gemma's trial a statement made by 22:52 Deborah's sister who was based in 22:53 Malaysia was read to the court in this 22:56 statement she said we still do not 22:58 understand how she died did she suffer 23:01 this mystery will haunt me forever 23:04 to this very day Gemma has never 23:06 accepted responsibility over the murder 23:08 of Deborah so some questions still 23:10 remain unanswered but to me the motive 23:12 is plain and simple it is great the cold 23:16 facts in this case are shocking and it's 23:18 very sad to know how Deborah's story 23:19 came to an end she was a vulnerable lady 23:22 seeking help for a declining mental 23:24 health not only had she leaned on Gemma 23:26 for support but she had even offered her 23:28 a huge sum of money from her savings to 23:30 help her friend out and Gemma she was 23:33 clearly abusing her vulnerability for 23:35 her own personal gain and tragically all 23:37 of this would end through a genuinely 23:39 despicable crime since her conviction 23:42 several former friends have come forward 23:43 to share their own experiences of Gemma 23:45 and as it turns out she has always been 23:48 one to try and steal money and even 23:50 Partners so I guess this means that this 23:53 form of thinking is not a new one for 23:54 Gemma and as it turns out she has always 23:57 been a [ __ ] snake anyway I'm wrapping Outro 24:00 this one up today folks thank you so 24:01 much for watching another video today by 24:03 Coffee House crime if you found this 24:05 case
