0:00 as the translator to a powerful 0:02 politician altantuya found herself in a 0:04 very tricky situation when she was 0:06 bribed to translate an elusive deal 0:08 between two Nations despite her best 0:11 efforts she was never rewarded for her 0:13 hand in the negotiation and after 0:15 threatening her powerful boss she found 0:18 herself as the primary target of a 0:20 terrifying operation to silence her and 0:22 tragically all of this would end with 0:25 the use of C4 Alena's case gained 0:28 International attention when two former 0:30 police officers were convicted of her 0:32 murder but when detectives followed the 0:34 clues they realized that those officers 0:37 may have just been chosen as scapegoats 0:40 the mystery deepened further when 0:41 detectives realized that a political 0:44 analyst and even the former prime 0:46 minister of Malaysia may have been 0:48 involved in her execution and these 0:50 details would only be the beginning of 0:52 an extremely twisted of those living here in the Altantuya Shaariibuu 4:40 year 2006 was a woman named altantuya 4:43 Shabu born in the year 1978 altantuya 4:47 embraced a multicultural upbringing that 4:49 influenced her younger years although 4:51 she was born to Mongolian parents her 4:54 life began in the expansive country of 4:56 Russia which is where she lived for the 4:58 first 12 years of her life now despite 5:01 standing out among her classmates her 5:03 kind nature endeared her to everyone 5:05 around her she was both sweet and clever 5:08 at the same time and her teachers and 5:10 peers found her a pleasure to be around 5:12 she absorbed various cultural influences 5:15 at a very young age incorporating 5:17 elements from Taiwanese Chinese 5:19 Mongolian and Russian backgrounds into 5:22 her identity this made her an extremely 5:24 unique and interesting person to be 5:26 around and it's safe to say that all of 5:28 those around her were deeply fascinated 5:31 by her it was in the year of 1990 that 5:34 alt antia returned to her homeland of 5:36 Mongolia she continued to go to school 5:39 here made many new friends and succeeded 5:41 academically and by the time she 5:43 graduated from high school when she was 5:45 18 years old she was also married this 5:48 worldwind romance led her to tie the 5:50 knot with a Mongolian singer named madii 5:53 but despite welcoming a child together 5:55 the union was unfortunately shortlived 5:58 and after divorcing alter 2 years child 6:01 went to live with her parents while she 6:03 pondered the next steps of her own life 6:05 initially pursuing a career in teaching 6:07 Altona showcased a Proficiency in four 6:10 different languages that being Mongolian 6:13 Russian Chinese and English with even a 6:15 sprinkling of French she was intent on 6:18 leveraging her Multicultural background 6:20 and linguistic talents to educate her 6:22 local community but her plans took an 6:24 unexpected turn when on a whim she 6:27 decided to relocate to France viewing 6:29 this as an opportunity for both personal 6:31 exploration and language enhancement 6:34 once she arrived in Europe altantuya was 6:36 immediately recognized for her beauty 6:39 with perfect skin a slim figure and a 6:41 beautiful smile it is safe to say that 6:43 she turned many heads in the street 6:45 encouraged by her friends and her family 6:47 alike she enrolled in modeling school 6:49 and found employment in the fashion 6:51 industry but despite her initial success 6:53 her modeling career would unfortunately 6:55 prove fruitless therefore leading her 6:58 back to Mongolia with a a rather sad 7:00 sense of 7:02 loss now back in a former country Alton 7:04 tuya had no idea what to do I think many 7:07 of us hit that in our early adulthood 7:09 you hit your 20s and then all of a 7:11 sudden you have no idea what to do with 7:13 your life she would even remarry and 7:15 have a second child but this too ended 7:17 in divorce and of course the child went 7:19 back to her parents too despite feeling 7:21 a drift and not knowing what to do with 7:23 herself Altona recognized the one 7:25 strength that she had that being her 7:27 deep and extensive Multicultural 7:29 background and after a series of 7:31 unsuccessful gigs she was given a very 7:33 unique opportunity to work as an 7:34 international translator with thanks to 7:36 a connection by a friend thrilled by the 7:39 idea of using her language skills while 7:40 traveling internationally she embraced 7:42 this Challenge and traveled to many 7:44 places like China Singapore and Malaysia 7:46 by the year of 2004 Altona had firmly 7:49 established herself within the field of 7:51 translation boasting an impressive 7:53 portfolio with high-profile clientele to 7:56 boot it was during a jeel convention in 7:59 Malaysia that un notable Beauty and 8:01 impeccable accent captured the attention 8:03 of najib razak who at the time was the Political negotiations... 8:06 minister of defense and the future Prime 8:08 Minister of Malaysia and eventually 8:10 razak introduced Alona to his close 8:13 associate Abdul binda now Abdul was a 8:16 defense analyst affiliated with the 8:18 Malaysian strategic Research Center and 8:21 Not only was he politically influential 8:23 but he was also a distinguished 8:25 socialite with considerable wealth now 8:27 you can probably see where this is going 8:29 already Pat aluya and Abdul hit it off 8:32 almost immediately she was enamored by a 8:35 success money and flattery and as for 8:37 Abdul well he was Smitten by her Youth 8:40 and charm it didn't take long for the 8:42 two to grow close and before you knew it 8:45 he was taking her across the globe to 8:47 Luxurious hotels in koala lumur Shanghai 8:50 and various European cities we engaged 8:53 in negotiating high stakes business 8:55 deals or exploring romantic locations 8:58 alent tuers and Abdul's relationship 9:00 eventually evolved from professional 9:02 collaboration into a more intimate 9:04 connection it was in October of 2006 9:07 that Abdul and altantuya embarked on 9:09 another journey to France but this one 9:12 would be different thanks to alona's 9:14 years of Multicultural experience she 9:16 often accompanied him as a personal 9:18 translator and helped him with 9:20 communication though saying that I'm 9:22 sure that's not the only kind of support 9:24 she was providing altantuya proved 9:26 herself to be especially useful when 9:28 Heist akes business deals were on the 9:30 line and this time would be no different 9:33 because after arriving in Paris the two 9:36 would have to negotiate a massive 9:37 contract worth millions of dollars so of 9:41 all places what was Abdul beinder doing 9:43 here in France in the first place well 9:46 as it turns out he was actually here to 9:48 negotiate a deal for several hybrid War 9:50 submarines for the Malaysian government 9:52 so as you can imagine a lot of money was 9:55 at stake here and unfortunately this is 9:57 where the story becomes both comp 9:59 licated and corrupt in the intricate web 10:02 of international negotiations Alton Tua 10:04 found herself fully unaware of the full 10:06 magnitude of this deal and of course 10:08 that put her in very hot water it 10:10 eventually surfaced that a French 10:12 company named amarus put more than 110 10:14 million euros of commissions to help 10:16 facilitate this agreement now Abdul 10:19 promised Alon tuya half a million 10:21 dollars for her role in this negotiation 10:23 so she essentially was bribed to keep 10:25 quiet in a legally messy 10:28 situation 10:29 now initially altantuya was more than 10:32 happy to take the deal half a million 10:34 dollars was more money than she had ever 10:36 seen in her lifetime But as time passed 10:38 by her patience to receive this money 10:40 wore thin you see Abdul never got around 10:43 to paying her causing aluya to push back 10:46 in frustration frustrated by his rather 10:49 elusive Behavior she threatened to 10:51 expose him if he didn't complete his 10:52 side of the bargain I mean a covert 10:55 International arms deal with millions of 10:57 dollars worth of illegal kickbacks that 10:59 is not something that anyone wants to be 11:01 affiliated with so now facing blackmail 11:04 and the looming possibility of an 11:05 international law enforcement scrutiny 11:08 Abdul had a difficult Choice ahead of 11:10 him was he going to commit to his 11:12 promise and fulfill his end of the 11:13 bargain or would he find another way 11:16 around this paying out half a million 11:19 dollars may have solved all of his 11:21 problems but he was worried that she 11:23 might return to extort him in the future 11:25 and so lost in his dilemma he 11:27 contemplated a more infinite way of 11:29 keeping her silent you may have guessed 11:31 this already but Abdul was no stranger 11:34 to Shady Affairs and so after returning 11:37 to his political stronghold in koala 11:39 lumo he discreetly leveraged his 11:41 extensive political Network to address 11:43 his impending crisis traditional methods 11:45 were deemed to be inadequate given the 11:47 potential consequences here and so in a 11:50 strategic move he consulted the prime 11:52 minister's chief of security who would 11:54 later introduce him to Senior Chief 11:56 Inspector aalah hadri a man with an 11:58 alleged history of silencing people 12:00 through lethal actions behind the scenes 12:03 it appeared that Abdul was about to make 12:05 sure that he would never be threatened 12:07 with blackmail like this again as a side 12:09 note it is important to understand here 12:12 that although Malaysia may seem to 12:13 bolster a prosperous economy on the 12:15 outside its International reputation has 12:18 actually been tarnished by Decades of 12:21 corruption the same political party has 12:23 been running the country for more than 12:25 65 years now and with so much time and 12:27 power they have managed to rack up 12:29 numerous allegations against them so 12:32 this scenario begs the question how does 12:35 a prominent member of a corrupt 12:36 government respond when confronted not 12:39 merely by an ordinary civilian but by 12:41 their lover who is threatening to expose 12:43 a highly illegal arms trade I'm sure 12:46 that unfortunately you can already 12:49 connect the October 19th, 2006... Aftermath... 12:55 dots October the 19th 2006 6 Alton tua's 13:00 family were beginning to grow worried 13:02 they hadn't heard from their daughter in 13:04 a little over 24 hours now and knowing 13:06 that she was in a foreign country 13:08 without anyone nearby to support her her 13:10 parents knew that they needed to remain 13:12 vigilant for her safety recognizing the 13:15 gravity of the situation her cousin 13:17 decided to take action seeking urgent 13:20 assistance he filed a police report at 13:22 the Mongolian Embassy in Bangkok where 13:24 he then initiated contact with Malaysian 13:26 authorities prompting an investigation 13:28 ation after contacting the authorities 13:31 in Malaysia a team began to search for 13:33 altantuya and not even 24 hours later a 13:36 gruesome site was discovered in the 13:38 forest in punak cam the forest looked 13:41 more like a battlefield than anything 13:43 else a crater which was clearly created 13:46 by an explosion was visible on the 13:48 forest floor and amidst the foliage lay 13:50 the dismembered remains of an individual 13:53 with bone fragments flesh and tissue 13:55 scattered in a nightmarish display with 13:58 the crime scene so chaotic and dispersed 14:00 nobody really knew what to make of this 14:02 situation I mean it was clear that 14:04 someone had died from an explosion but 14:07 could it possibly have been an accident 14:09 sadly the answer was no because upon 14:11 closer inspection very evident signs of 14:14 Foul Play were revealed this was 14:16 certainly a case of homicide it was 14:18 later revealed that the victim had been 14:20 shot twice before being stuffed full of 14:22 explosives and tragically it was not 14:25 those two bullets that killed them so 14:28 what was the story behind this gruesome 14:30 scene because whoever the victim was 14:32 they must have found themselves on the 14:34 wrong side of some very powerful people 14:36 put quite simply civilians do not have 14:39 access to this sort of 14:44 Weaponry it became clear that the 14:46 explosive residue collected at the crime 14:48 scene was from explosives usually used 14:50 by the military to be exact the residue 14:53 was confirmed to belong to pente rol 14:55 tetranitrate and cylene trinit aamine 14:59 which were defined as explosives under 15:01 the Firearms Act of 1957 and are 15:04 typically found in C4 despite the lack 15:06 of facial features to help verify the 15:08 body forensics were able to use bone 15:10 fragments to narrow down the list of 15:12 potential victims and soon enough DNA 15:15 analysis sadly confirmed that the body 15:17 belonged to altantuya shabu following 15:20 the news two officers were swiftly 15:22 arrested in connection to the case that 15:24 being Corporal cumar aged 35 and Chief 15:27 Inspector a hadri aged 30 it is worth 15:30 highlighting here that HRI was the man 15:33 that Abdul hired to fix his little 15:35 blackmail problem now both Umar and 15:37 hardre were part of the special actions 15:39 unit an elite Malaysian task force 15:42 renowned for its specialized 15:44 capabilities and beyond their roles in 15:46 their SAU they maintained affiliations 15:48 with high ranking Malaysian politicians 15:51 they had even previously served as 15:53 security Personnel for the former prime 15:55 minister Abdullah ahmmed badawi so these 15:58 two men were well trained well trusted 16:01 and knew how to keep their mouths shut 16:03 and if there were ever two men that were 16:05 perfect for this job it would likely be 16:07 these two with this in mind all Abdul 16:10 had to do now was sit back in his estate 16:12 and let these men do the Dirty Work how 16:15 lucky for him that his clandestine 16:17 Affairs could now be managed 16:24 esslyn know was that a mere few hours 16:28 before her disappearance Alton Tua 16:30 herself had reported the entire Affair 16:32 to the authorities aware of how powerful 16:35 her enemies were she told the police 16:37 that if she were to go missing the first 16:40 person they should investigate should be 16:41 Abdul beinder you see in the days before 16:44 reporting herself to the authorities 16:46 alenta suspected that she was being 16:49 followed At first she noticed the same 16:51 car around her home parked around the 16:53 corner or up the block by her house and 16:56 then it became more prominent people 16:59 were following her to work to the shops 17:01 and then back home as the intrusive 17:03 surveillance became increasingly obvious 17:06 Altona recognized the urgency of seeking 17:08 help she knew that she was dealing with 17:10 a powerful and corrupt political faction 17:13 here and quite understandably was 17:15 terrified of the consequences and this 17:18 awareness extended Beyond Alena herself 17:21 even her family knew that Abdul was 17:23 terrible news and before officers could 17:26 even ask they gave his name up so the 17:29 question is what led Alton Tua to this 17:31 Lonely Forest where her life was then 17:34 tragically ended it turns out that on 17:36 the night before her death she was 17:38 actually on the way to Abdul's house 17:39 already to negotiate some sort of 17:41 resolution however when she arrived she 17:44 would not actually meet her ex-lover 17:46 instead she met his two henchmen who 17:48 then put her in the back of a car and 17:50 escorted her away for to never be seen 17:52 alive again now with an active 17:54 investigation in progress law Finding her killers, complicated legal proceedings... 17:56 enforcement pursued every lead they 17:58 could could find and of course the 18:00 political party behind this wanted 18:02 nothing to do with it and finally 18:04 several weeks after the Grim discovery 18:06 of her body three arrests were finally 18:08 made that being Abdul beinder and his 18:10 two henchmen a pivotal moment in the 18:13 investigation unfolded when a key 18:15 witness intimately connected to the case 18:17 stepped forward Bala subramanium also 18:20 known as Bala was a private investigator 18:23 hired by Abdul to keep a close eye on 18:25 Alton tuya and boy did he emerge with 18:27 some rather controversial news Bala 18:31 claimed that the police had been 18:32 withholding crucial information on the 18:34 case and that furthermore he was 18:36 prepared to reveal everything that he 18:38 knew Balor also claimed that not only 18:41 did the Prime Minister know Alon tuya 18:43 but he also had a sexual relationship 18:45 with her too Bala also revealed 18:48 conversations with Abdul about his 18:50 relationship with Alon tuya he claimed 18:52 that he had inherited her from najib who 18:54 passed her on because he wanted to avoid 18:56 controversy while he geared up to become 18:59 Deputy Prime Minister it was also 19:01 revealed that Abdul had sought najib's 19:03 advice after his trip to France with 19:05 aluya this implying that najib was aware 19:07 of the blackmail and the impending 19:09 murder case these allegations were 19:12 highly inflammatory and of course 19:14 painted two very powerful men negatively 19:17 and that evening when questioned about 19:18 his involvement in the case prime 19:20 minister njer brzak strongly denied ever 19:23 knowing Alon tuya and even claimed that 19:25 he had never personally met the woman 19:27 Abdul simult ously denied having any 19:29 inappropriate involvement with Alon tuya 19:32 and furthermore he corroborated his 19:33 story with niib claiming he had never 19:35 actually had any involvement with the 19:37 girl which is quite the statement when 19:40 you think about it I mean receipts and 19:42 witness accounts all say 19:46 otherwise in a sudden turn of events and 19:49 not even 24 hours after making his first 19:51 statement Bala would then suddenly 19:53 retract it and make a new statement to 19:55 say that his first one was not truthful 19:58 and entirely made up in response and in 20:00 his new statement he completely absolved 20:02 both najib and Abdul of their 20:04 involvement with Alon tuya essentially 20:06 getting both of them off the hook and 20:08 perhaps no surprise but shortly after 20:10 this he was then reported as missing to 20:12 the police because put quite simply he 20:15 had vanished off the face of the Earth 20:17 many rumors started to circulate after 20:19 this but what was quite obvious is that 20:21 this man faced extreme pressure from 20:23 some very powerful people and whether 20:25 his disappearance was voluntary or not 20:28 he was now firmly out of the spotlight 20:30 and it also appeared that despite all of 20:32 the evidence stacked against him Abdul 20:34 was actually going to get away with the 20:35 murder of Alon tuya with no legal 20:38 consequence and in 2008 he was acquitted 20:41 of all charges and although the 20:43 prosecution said that they would appeal 20:45 this never actually happened in the end 20:48 however Abdul's henchmen s Umar and 20:50 aalah hadri were not so lucky someone 20:53 needed to take the fall after all and so 20:56 on April the 9th 2009 the high court 20:58 judge ruled that they were to be tried 21:00 and sentenced for altern two years 21:02 murder both men were eventually found 21:05 guilty with them being sentenced to 21:06 death by hanging for their crimes and as 21:09 their sentences were read out both men 21:11 looked onward with a blank and soulless 21:13 face both surul Umar and aah hajri 21:16 appealed their sentences and 21:18 surprisingly four years later in 2013 21:21 both men were suddenly acquitted of all 21:23 crimes that meaning that not only were 21:25 their lives spared but both men were 21:27 also so now free to go many 21:30 justifications were given for this 21:32 including a lack of personal motive for 21:34 the murder and insufficient witness 21:36 testimonies and while this may have been 21:38 seen as a win for the politicians of 21:40 Malaysia the country's people were 21:42 enraged by the decision I mean people 21:45 always knew that politicians in their 21:47 country were corrupt but this was simply 21:50 unbelievable to 21:53 them like a strange game of pingpong the One step ahead, for one. 21:56 prosecution was immediately back on the 21:58 case appealing the acquit to the federal 22:01 court and on January the 13th 2015 the 22:04 federal court overturned that acquit 22:06 finding both men guilty of murder for 22:08 the second time however during this 22:10 appeal it became rather obvious that one 22:12 of the most important people to this 22:14 case was now missing as their second man 22:17 sirel was nowhere to be found it 22:19 appeared that sirel had fled the country 22:22 to Australia of all places an Interpol 22:24 notice was issued and several days later 22:27 he was arrested by brisbane's 22:28 authorities the Malaysian authorities 22:30 requested to extradite him back to 22:32 Malaysia so he could face his penalties 22:35 however this was actually made 22:36 impossible due to Australia's own quirky 22:39 legal system now this is something that 22:41 I actually found quite interesting but 22:43 as it turns out anyone who's been given 22:45 a death sentence is actually protected 22:47 by Australian law and that furthermore 22:49 they cannot face extradition out the 22:51 country stuck in Australia sirel sat in 22:54 the villawood immigration Detention 22:56 Center safe from his fate back in 22:58 Malaysia and feeling less pressure now 23:00 that he was away from the country that 23:02 convicted him he began offering his own 23:04 side of the story to journalists during 23:07 his detention sir Lazar claimed that 23:09 although he had been instructed to carry 23:11 out the killing of altantuya her actual 23:14 killers were actually still at large he 23:16 further claimed that he and aillah hadri 23:19 were not selected for the job and 23:21 instead they were made to be scapegoats 23:24 while cill was held in Australia aalah 23:26 hadri continued to sentencing in 23:28 Malaysia and his legal council provided 23:31 pivotal insights into the night of Alton 23:33 tua's death it was alleged that the 23:35 explosives used in the murder were not 23:37 within the federal police inventory and 23:40 that furthermore records indicated that 23:42 aalah hadri had only been issued a 23:44 pistol and despite their extensive 23:46 military background both men were 23:49 untrained in the use of deadly 23:50 explosives or bombs Abdul openly denies 23:54 any and all allegations and to this day 23:57 both Sur and a maintained their 23:58 innocence consistently asserting that 24:01 their involvement in the murder was less 24:03 than what they were convicted of to this 24:05 day sirel still walks the streets as a 24:07 free man this is because it was ruled 24:10 that the indefinite attention of Asylum 24:11 Seekers is unlawful in Australia and so 24:14 he remains out of custody in Australia 24:17 to this day but aalah hadri is not so 24:20 lucky his second appeal was overturned 24:22 and he remains guilty in Malaysia and so 24:25 to this day he sits on death row in in a 24:28 Cell in Malaysia awaiting his execution 24:30 by 24:33 hanging it looks like it's one of those Wrapping up and rememberance 24:35 moments where siru was one step ahead of 24:37 the game here and the exact details of 24:39 who was there when Alton Tua was 24:41 murdered or indeed who is responsible 24:43 for pressing the button remains unknown 24:46 all that we do know is that alent tuya 24:49 was unfortunate enough to find herself 24:51 in the middle of a very sticky political 24:53 situation one that was filled with lies 24:56 smoken mirrors and Corruption she was 24:58 thrust into an uncomfortable situation 25:00 before she knew it was bribed and lied 25:03 to used and then murdered Alon tuya was 25:06 beautiful intelligent and driven and 25:08 towards the end of her life she was 25:10 Finding success in an occupation that 25:12 she loved but tragically she unwittingly 25:15 crossed paths with the wrong individuals 25:17 and this resulted in her losing her life 25:19 in the most brutal of ways to this day 25:22 Abdul lives consequence-free for what he 25:25 allegedly did to Alton tuya and he 25:27 stands as an example of what can happen 25:29 when you cross someone with all the 25:31 power and none of the 25:35 consequences quite a sensitive Outro, Nero 25:37 controversial and very political case 25:39 when we think about it but yeah I think 25:42 that pretty much wraps up our case today 25:44 folks as always I'd like to know what 25:45 you think about this case because yeah 25:47 it's quite a concerning one considering 25:49 how many people are involved and
