0:00 Steven faroh was a dangerous man with 0:02 extremely worrying antisocial behaviors 0:04 and as an adult he became a lonely 0:06 Drifter who survived off handouts and 0:08 the backs of other people the disheveled 0:11 man blamed his way of living on a 0:12 tumultuous childhood further claiming 0:14 that the church had wronged him and over 0:17 the years this hatred manifested itself 0:19 into intense levels of hostility in fact 0:22 it would eventually blow out in one of 0:24 the most violent ways possible filling 0:26 the rural communities of Western England 0:28 with concern and forcing Many religious 0:30 figures to hide in fear the question is 0:33 what caused Steven faroh to snap so 0:35 viciously an excuse which covered his 0:37 psychotic personality or 0:40 both welcome back to Coffee House crime 0:43 folks my name is Adrien and today we're 0:45 looking at the case of Steven faroh 0:47 before you begin and just to let you 0:48 know that I post up to four times a week yourself a 0:59 coffee put pull up a seat and get ready 1:00 for the Deep dive this is the case of 1:03 Steven 1:10 faroh nestled in the western reaches of Western England 1:13 the United Kingdom West England unveils 1:15 a mesmerizing tapestry of Landscapes 1:18 Rich Heritage and cultural allore and 1:20 with it often being bathed in the soft 1:22 glow of the English Sun this region is 1:25 known for its Scenic Wonders on the one 1:27 hand Rolling Meadows are adorned with 1:29 vibrant wild flowers and on the other 1:32 rugged coastlines create a dramatic 1:34 backdrop and thrown between these two 1:36 compelling environments lies a 1:38 never-ending backstory filled with 1:40 medieval charm villages with thatched 1:42 roofs and cobbled streets evoke a bygone 1:44 era where the pulse of daily life beats 1:47 to the rhythm of tradition it's a place 1:49 where mity seamlessly intertwines with 1:52 history and creates a unique blend that 1:54 characterizes the area this is West 1:57 England folks a place that I myself have 1:59 have had the chance to call home and 2:01 whether you're here for a day or a year 2:03 you will find yourself mesmerized by its 2:06 natural beauty in a place well known for 2:08 its churches cheddar and charm it's easy 2:10 to forget about the pressures and woes 2:12 of life here which is probably what 2:15 makes this story of dark and desperate 2:16 murder all the more haunting today we're 2:19 focusing on one particular man from the 2:21 Pharaoh family his parents re and Dorene 2:24 raised a large family of six children 2:27 and this video shines the spotlight on 2:28 their youngest child Steven now it is Stephen Farrow's dark history... 2:31 crucial to know Steven's upbringing so 2:33 that we can better understand how this 2:35 child turned into such a vile and 2:37 disturbing man born in the year 1964 2:40 Steven was the product of an unplanned 2:42 pregnancy and soon after birth it 2:45 quickly became evident that he was not 2:47 your average child he was often 2:49 described as the black sheep of the 2:51 family and his mother would often say 2:53 that she believed something was 2:55 inherently wrong with him I mean she did 2:57 still love him all the same even if he 2:59 was was quite a challenge to deal with 3:01 as a young kid he would never sleep at 3:03 night which as you can imagine kept both 3:05 of his parents awake at all hours and 3:07 Dorian would later go on to say that if 3:09 she was given a second chance she would 3:11 rather have her other five children all 3:12 over again than a second one like Steven 3:15 he was extraordinarily hyperactive from 3:17 a very young age and during his first 3:19 day of school was even sent home due to 3:21 bad behavior Steven also developed 3:23 various antisocial Tendencies throughout 3:25 his childhood too and unfortunately I'm 3:29 not talking about minor things either 3:31 you see Steven's family were very 3:33 religious and would go to church every 3:34 single Sunday but Steven he despised 3:37 religion and so at the age of 10 He Set 3:40 Fire To The Altar and watched it burn 3:42 now nobody knew it at the time but 3:44 decades later Steven would go on to 3:46 claim that just a year prior to this 3:48 incident a priest had assaulted him and 3:50 that's why he hated religion so much the 3:52 problem with this excuse though is that 3:54 it didn't stop at the church Steven had 3:57 become quite the arsonist as a child and 3:59 would set fire to almost everything and 4:01 this included Rags through letter 4:04 boxes while these incidents never 4:07 resulted in any injuries or death they 4:09 did present concerning behavior for a 4:11 young boy especially considering that he 4:13 hadn't even entered his rebellious 4:15 teenage years yet strikingly this 4:18 conduct would only intensify in both 4:20 frequency and severity over the years 4:23 yet all the same his brothers and 4:25 sisters continued to label him as his 4:27 mother's favorite now Steven hared A 4:29 deep affection for his mother but his 4:31 relationship with his father rej would 4:34 take a markedly different turn re 4:36 maintained a strict and well-ordered 4:38 household a structure that the young boy 4:40 would of course inevitably rebel against 4:43 and this Defiance would persist 4:45 throughout his teenage years accompanied 4:47 by the development of other morbid 4:49 behaviors in a troubling parallel often 4:52 seen in those with a murderous 4:53 trajectory Steven displayed a tendency 4:56 toward cruelty and violence towards 4:58 animals the this was a disturbing trait 5:01 evident in his childhood and many of 5:03 those animals faced death in the process 5:06 defined by cruelty Disobedience and 5:08 outright antisocial Tendencies it is no 5:11 surprise that in the year 1979 and at 5:14 the age of 15 he faced a burglary charge 5:17 which led to enrollment in disciplinary 5:19 school now despite this intervention 5:22 which by the way separated him from his 5:23 family and his loving mother it failed 5:26 to curb his uncontrollable behavior and 5:28 just three years later in 1982 Steven 5:32 was found guilty of arson which resulted 5:34 in a brief stint in prison now after 5:37 being released from prison Steven did 5:39 manage 12 whole years without any other 5:42 arrest but this wasn't because he had 5:44 become a law-abiding citizen Oh No in 5:47 fact he just simply learned how to avoid 5:49 the authorities throughout this decade 5:51 he remained to be a terrible example of 5:53 lawful behavior and skirted the line of 5:56 crime engaging in Petty thievery and 5:58 various burglaries was without any 6:00 detection he danced on this fine line 6:02 for many years but his life would remain 6:04 unstable and as the man Grew Older he 6:07 adopted a transient existence as a 6:09 homeless Drifter at times he sought 6:11 Refuge with family or friends sometimes 6:14 lived in various halfway houses and 6:16 often found himself sleeping on the 6:18 streets this concerning lifestyle 6:20 persisted until the year 1994 when he 6:23 found himself convicted of aggravated 6:25 burglary after breaking into an elderly 6:27 woman's home in stowbridge as a result 6:30 he was sentenced to 7 years in prison 6:33 and due to his previous conviction being 6:34 made at such a young age he would also 6:37 undergo a psychological evaluation some 6:40 very concerning details emerged through 6:42 these sessions I mean for one he 6:44 confessed to a psychiatrist that he 6:46 fantasized about sexually assaulting 6:48 women in front of their husbands to make 6:50 these fantasies even worse he then 6:52 expressed that in the aftermath he 6:54 wanted to murder those husbands before 6:56 then going back to torturing the women 6:58 no surprise these confessions led to 7:00 Steven being officially diagnosed with 7:01 psychopathy a mental health disorder 7:04 that exhibits impulsivity a lack of 7:06 empathy and antisocial Behavior now 7:08 despite this information being shared 7:10 with the judge and other relevant 7:11 authorities Steven Wood actually be 7:13 released from prison one year early in 7:15 the year 2000 I mean stating the obvious 7:17 here but it is absolutely astounding 7:19 that a diagnosed psychopath with violent 7:21 tendencies was allowed to roam free and 7:23 early especially after confessing such 7:26 terrible dark thoughts either way he was 7:29 once again a free man claiming benefits 7:31 abusing drugs and alcohol and abusing 7:34 the relationships of those who cared 7:36 about him he financially survived by 7:38 claiming state benefits through the 7:39 council receiving just over 7:42 £270 or $340 weekly now for someone down 7:47 on their luck this was actually a very 7:49 manageable sum at the turn of the New 7:51 Millennium taking a quick look the 7:53 average rent for a one-bedroom property 7:55 back then was only £79 a week despite 7:58 this though Steven carried on as a 8:00 homeless Drifter without a stable home 8:03 and sadly his criminal activities would 8:05 carry on for many years after this but 8:07 in the Fateful year of 2012 and at the 8:10 age of 48 Steven faroh's life would take 8:13 on a whole new Realm of The New Year... 8:24 Darkness it was at the turn of a new 8:26 year that worrying signs of Steven's 8:28 mental Health began to emerge one of his 8:31 friends woke up to an ominous text 8:33 message from Steven reading the church 8:36 will be the first to suffer dark and 8:38 strange yet quite typical for Steven his 8:41 friend did not think too much of it his 8:43 hatred for Christianity was common 8:45 knowledge to those around him and most 8:47 of them chalked it up to his rather 8:49 unsteady upbringing however this 8:52 sentiment would changeed the very next 8:54 day because on January the 2nd in the 8:56 Sleepy town of Thornbury one particular 8:58 family family returned to the home of 9:00 Vine Cottage upon arrival the family 9:03 home was dark cold and quiet and after 9:06 turning the lights on it became apparent 9:08 that not everything was as it should be 9:11 the house had been ransacked with open 9:13 drawers cupboards a jar and belongings 9:16 strewn around the property but the most 9:18 concerning clue was found on the kitchen 9:20 table words were hastily written onto a 9:23 note which had been stabbed into the 9:25 table with a knife the note said be 9:27 thankful you did not come back or we 9:30 would have killed you Christian scum I 9:32 hate 9:34 God no surprise they called the police 9:37 immediately and although officers did 9:38 examine the crime scene there was sadly 9:40 not much they could do burglary is quite 9:43 common out in the countryside especially 9:45 over the holidays something to remember 9:47 for later on but investigators would 9:49 find a bootprint and swapped the house 9:51 for any DNA evidence it was ultimately 9:53 concluded that this home was not 9:55 personally targeted but utterly random 9:57 they know this because who who ever 9:59 written that note was very critical of 10:01 Christianity but those people living in 10:03 that house were not religious at all so 10:06 who' ever written that note it was 10:07 either a shot in the dark or entirely by 10:10 mistake but sadly this would not be an 10:12 isolated incident and not only a few 10:14 days later the authorities would receive 10:16 another phone call another break-in was 10:18 reported in a rural town in gleria only 10:22 this time the consequences would be far 10:24 more 10:26 severe throw yourself 60 Mi north of our A terrible discovery 10:29 former burglary and you will find the 10:31 Sleepy town of bodley bodley was next in 10:34 line to report a home invasion however 10:37 this one harbored a much more Sinister 10:39 secret arriving at the crime scene 10:42 responding officers found the lifeless 10:44 body of an older woman it appeared as if 10:46 she had been stabbed four times in the 10:48 neck with a knife and beaten with what 10:50 was later identified to be her walking 10:52 stick furthermore it seems that she'd 10:55 been hit so hard with that walking stick 10:57 that it had splintered over her body the 10:59 body was eventually identified to belong 11:02 to a retired teacher by the name of 11:04 Betty Yates at the wise age of 77 she 11:07 was a physically vulnerable woman she 11:09 had taught locally at the former St 11:11 John's middle school and was well known 11:13 for hosting book readings and attending 11:16 art and walking groups the news spread 11:18 like wildfire across the region and 11:21 although these two incidents were not 11:23 yet linked the authorities pleaded for 11:25 any information which might help find 11:27 Betty's killer a community-led Anonymous 11:29 tipping company named Crimestoppers UK 11:32 offered £10,000 for any information 11:35 leading to an arrest this of cost the 11:37 equivalent of around 11:40 $12,600 in addition to this the BBC 11:42 evening show crime watch also 11:44 highlighted Betty's murder and pleaded 11:46 for any information that may help but 11:49 despite their urgent please for Action 11:51 no new information emerged as the days 11:53 passed and much to Betty's family's 11:55 distress they remained no closer to 11:58 finding her as salent in fact things 12:00 would get worse several weeks later when 12:03 yet another violent crime was reported 12:06 and tragically this one held a very 12:08 similar 12:09 outcome on the morning of February the A second murder 12:12 14th and in the small town of Thornbury 12:14 two local Builders were scheduled to 12:17 conduct maintenance at a local vicarage 12:19 owned by Reverend John sards but after 12:22 knocking on the front door they received 12:24 no response from the vicar with an 12:26 already established friendship with the 12:28 Vic both men felt quite comfortable to 12:31 enter the property and begin their work 12:33 but upon entering the vicarage they 12:35 immediately sensed that something was 12:37 wrong just as before the house was cold 12:40 dark and eerily silent and upon further 12:43 investigation the two men came across a 12:46 puzzling and horrific scene a trail of 12:48 blood LED them to the main room and in 12:51 the center of that room lay the lifeless 12:53 body of John sards he was cold to the 12:56 touch and appeared to have been stabbed 12:58 seven times times with a knife but that 13:01 was not all they had come across the 13:03 builders noticed several items 13:06 symbolically placed around his body to 13:08 begin with on his chest lay a Bible 13:11 which was open to the letter of Jude the 13:13 letter of Jude is a short section of the 13:15 New Testament that condemns enemies of 13:17 Christianity and perhaps more 13:20 symbolically that their enemies are 13:22 within the faith itself the letter of 13:24 Jude speaks of false teachers who twist 13:26 the word of Christ for their very own 13:28 gain and most notably in this case to 13:31 satiate their L propped against the wall 13:34 next to Jon's body was a framed image of 13:36 Christ and at his foot was a large 13:39 mirror reflecting toward the body this 13:41 was placed as if the killer wanted the 13:43 victim to look at Christ and then at 13:45 himself in a symbolic gesture of guilt 13:48 in addition to this long strands of 13:50 tissue paper were found throughout the 13:52 crime scene almost as if Party Poppers 13:54 had been used in an act of Celebration 13:57 to add to the chaos broken china and 14:00 various Foods were scattered on the 14:01 floor with empty beer bottles found 14:04 throughout the living room strange 14:06 details aside there is no doubt that the 14:08 manner in which Jon was killed was 14:10 filled with anger and anger directed at 14:12 Jon himself or the religion that he 14:14 stood for as we already know this 14:17 incident followed a similar crime only 1 14:19 month prior which was further marked by 14:21 another burglary displaying an intense 14:23 aversion to Christianity the escalation 14:26 of this hostility did hint at a 14:28 perpetrator who had taken their disdain 14:30 to the next level and with a potential 14:33 serial killer now in the making fear 14:35 instilled itself into the rural and 14:37 urban communities of West 14:40 England nobody knew who this killer was High alert 14:43 or if they would strike again the 14:45 general public was now on high alert the 14:48 authorities Vigilant and religious 14:50 community struck with an intense level 14:53 of Terror thankfully though it wouldn't 14:55 take long for a suspect to emerge 14:57 surveillance footage kep captured a man 14:59 fleeing the crime scene at approximately 15:01 6:15 in the morning he then appeared to 15:03 board a bus towards Bristol before 15:06 catching another bus that would take him 15:07 to the south coast of England now 15:10 perhaps no surprise to you and I this 15:12 man was later identified to be Steven 15:15 faraoh and so on February the 18th only 15:18 4 days after the second murder he was 15:20 officially declared to be a suspect for 15:22 both the burglary and the murder of John 15:25 sards the authorities announced that he 15:27 was officially on the Run and urged the 15:29 public not to approach him behind the 15:32 scenes after arriving on the south coast 15:34 he traveled to folston in Kent and by 15:37 now unknown to him at the time the 15:39 authorities had learned of his name and 15:41 his whereabouts due to his nomadic 15:43 lifestyle it was quite hard to track him 15:45 down and although eyewitnesses came 15:47 forward to say they had seen him there 15:49 was no concrete evidence behind this by 15:52 now the authorities had grown confident 15:54 that Steven was likely behind the deaths 15:56 of not just Betty but JN as well 15:58 officially making him a suspected double 16:00 murderer and just as their confidence 16:02 was growing a tip from the far west of 16:04 England came into the authorities a 16:06 woman called to claim that allegedly a 16:08 man was staying in her guest house in 16:10 folkstone Kent and that she was pretty 16:12 sure it was Steven with a rather Keen 16:14 interest in finding him the authorities 16:16 went down to this guest house to check 16:18 it out and lo and behold this tip was 16:20 screaming in accuracy Steven was 16:22 therefore arrested on the spot and taken 16:24 down to the local police station for 16:26 questioning and with this happening on 16:28 Fe the 19th this ended his 5-day stint 16:31 on the run and so began the long and Legal proceedings 16:33 arduous task of finding Steven faroh 16:35 guilty or not guilty following his 16:38 arrest he was officially charged on 16:40 suspicion of murdering Betty Yates and 16:42 Reverend John sards the prosecution team 16:44 described both murders as sadistic 16:47 further commenting that they were the 16:48 result of a deranged killer to which 16:50 Steven perfectly fit the profile now 16:53 these statements would also become 16:55 factually correct as upon further 16:57 psychiatric valuation he was diagnosed 17:00 with Psychopathic personality disorder 17:02 psychologists would also note other 17:04 disturbing behaviors for one he 17:07 exhibited narcissistic behaviors and 17:09 would say anything that he thought the 17:11 other person wanted to hear he further 17:13 LED experts to believe that he was a 17:14 pathological liar that he was arrogant 17:17 with an inflated sense of self-worth and 17:19 that he was extraordinarily opinionated 17:21 and deemed dangerous to be around by now 17:24 Steven's case had become notorious 17:26 throughout the United Kingdom and with 17:28 this new psychological evaluation many 17:31 began to ask why such an individual was 17:33 released back into the public moving 17:36 into the legal proceedings of this case 17:37 Steven was charged with burglary and two 17:40 counts of murder he would surprisingly 17:42 admit to the burglary but claimed that 17:44 he was innocent of both counts of 17:46 homicide to answer this he further 17:48 taunted the prosecution by claiming that 17:50 there was no way that they could prove 17:52 he was at either crime scene it wouldn't 17:55 take long to build a case against him 17:56 though before that various aspects had 17:59 to be taken into account this including 18:01 his mental health his previous runin 18:03 with the law and his evasion in the days 18:05 after Jon's murder Steven's trial began 18:08 on October the 4th 2012 and proceedings 18:10 would last for almost a month this is 18:13 partly due to Steven refusing to leave 18:15 his cell for scheduled proceedings in 18:17 fact he would only be present for his 18:19 sentencing at the end of all of this to 18:21 begin with his defense pleaded guilty to 18:23 the burglary but not guilty to the 18:25 murders that was until undenied able 18:28 evidence linked him to all crime scenes 18:31 bootprints that matched the boots he 18:33 wore during his arrest were found 18:35 outside Betty's house and if that wasn't 18:37 enough already his DNA was found in the 18:39 rooms of both murders and so with 18:42 Nowhere to Run Steven changed his story 18:44 although he pleaded not guilty to 18:46 Betty's murder he would plead guilty to 18:48 the manslaughter of Reverend John seds 18:51 of course with a caveat that it was on 18:53 the grounds of a diminished mental state 18:56 following this adjustment to his story 18:58 he would go on to describe the new 18:59 scenario in a new statement to the judge 19:02 both alone and isolated in an abandoned 19:04 Hut and apparently baked out of his mind 19:07 Steven planned Jon's murder for the next 19:09 several days and apparently that weed 19:11 made him paranoid and then tilted him 19:13 over the edge Steven had long fantasized 19:16 about killing a member of the church and 19:18 now was his opportunity as a Vicor John 19:20 had an open door policy and always 19:22 wanted to help other people in their 19:24 time of need which is how he allowed 19:26 such a monster to get close to him 19:28 Steven took advantage of this and 19:30 murdered him in Cold Blood but not 19:32 before humiliating him first as John lay 19:35 there dying on the floor he surrounded 19:37 him in props and told him to just hurry 19:39 up and die already now this 4-day 19:41 premeditation clearly demonstrated a 19:43 genuine intent to commit murder and so 19:46 his plea for manslaughter was ultimately 19:48 rejected on November the 2nd 2012 the 19:51 jury would deliberate for just over 9 19:53 hours and as expected they would 19:55 ultimately find Steven faroh to be 19:57 guilty of both counts of murder and 19:59 burglary when it came to Jon's death the 20:01 jury was unanimous but sadly the same 20:05 could not be said for Betty's murder an 20:07 11 to1 majority would find him guilty 20:09 but one jury member would change their 20:11 mind when they discovered that the two 20:12 were previously acquainted in the end 20:15 Steven faroh was sentenced to life 20:16 imprisonment without the possibility of 20:18 parole for his crimes and this is likely 20:21 for the best too to be honest personally 20:24 I don't doubt that someone like Steven 20:26 is capable of reoffending further down 20:28 on the road the judge put it quite 20:30 bluntly saying in each of these Dreadful 20:32 killings you acted sadistically to put a 20:35 knife deep into the body of Betty Yates 20:37 as she lay helpless on the floor was 20:39 obvious sadism she was not threatening 20:41 you you put the knife in her to have the 20:43 pleasure of doing so as for Reverend 20:45 seds you killed him having kicked him 20:48 down having told him to hurry up and die 20:51 it became apparent through his trial 20:53 that nothing would come of his claims 20:55 that he was assaulted as a child 20:57 unfortunately that is something we will 20:59 never find out it is possible that his 21:01 childhood trauma is legitimate and if it 21:04 is that is devastating news to learn but 21:07 you can probably see where I'm going 21:08 with this nothing can ever excuse you 21:10 for murdering an entirely innocent man 21:12 or woman speaking of there is nothing 21:15 that Steven or anyone else for that 21:17 matter can do to bring back the lives of 21:19 Betty Yates and John sdos it's a shame 21:22 that two gentle people were murdered by 21:24 a man so evil and callous described as a 21:27 wonderful Woman Betty was a 77-year-old Rememberance and revenge 21:30 widow with a loving family that 21:32 surrounded her her daughter Hazel spoke 21:34 after Steven's trial addressing the 21:36 Press she said there is at least now 21:38 some public Justice for my mom but our 21:41 personal loss remains raw and will 21:43 continue for us it is important that our 21:46 mom does not become defined by the 21:48 brutality of her death but rather is 21:50 celebrated for the 77 years of her life 21:53 John sudds is a man who should be 21:55 remembered for his own life too in fact 21:57 his life life was much more outside of 21:59 his career as a Vicor once a former 22:02 lawyer living in Essex he changed his 22:04 career path after surviving a car 22:06 accident he moved to Worcester only 7 22:09 months before his life was taken away 22:11 from him and his sister Hillary 22:13 expressed that the judicial system needs 22:15 to reconsider their guidelines on who 22:18 they let out into the world as many of 22:20 you will probably pick up this mistake 22:22 is surprisingly similar to my recent 22:25 case of CLA englas following his life 22:27 being saved John became a man of God who 22:30 wanted to help those in need it is 22:32 tragic to learn that it's for this 22:34 reason that a monster targeted him 22:36 following his incarceration Steven faroh 22:39 remained behind bars for the next 11 22:41 years he passed away only 4 months ago 22:43 in August of 2023 putting an end to his 22:46 despicable existence and hopefully Betty 22:49 and John's families will now find 22:51 closure in knowing that he will never be 22:53 able to hurt another Soul 22:56 again and I guess with him now dead we Outro 22:59 will not get any fresh updates in the 23:01 future
