0:00 with his blonde hair soft face and a 0:02 height barely above 4 feet Joseph Hall 0:04 looked like an average 10-year-old boy 0:07 without a care in the world but what if 0:09 I told you that merely weeks after this 0:11 photo was taken he would go on to commit 0:14 The Unthinkable by murdering his father 0:16 now Joseph already carried a burden of 0:19 Social and behavioral issues many of 0:21 which were deeply rooted in a traumatic 0:23 childhood inflicted by his abusive and 0:26 extremist father sadly the man's 0:28 troubling Tendencies continue to 0:30 escalate over the years and eventually 0:33 something within the young boy 0:34 inevitably snapped but things wouldn't 0:36 end well for Joseph either and some 0:39 would even argue that the judicial 0:40 system failed this child not just as a 0:43 victim but as a perpetrator too so was 0:46 Joseph's reaction unwarranted or was 0:49 there an element of justification listen 0:52 to this story and I'll let you 0:56 decide welcome or welcome back to Coffee 0:59 House crime folks my name is Adrien and 1:01 today I've got another dark story for 1:03 you and this one comes with a very 1:05 debatable social dilemma today we're 1:08 looking at the complex case of Jeff Hall 1:10 and his son Joseph Hall this story 1:12 really did push the boundaries of the 1:14 judicial system and left many deeply 1:16 frustrated before you begin this is your 1:18 gentle reminder that I serve nothing but 1:20 coffee and dark stories so if that 1:23 sounds like a kind of thing please 1:24 consider subscribing and now with that 1:26 said please grab yourself a coffee pull 1:28 up a seat and get ready for the de dive 1:31 this is the case of Joseph 1:39 Hall welcome back to the state of Riverside 1:42 California folks a state well loved for 1:45 its beaches cities and vibrant lifestyle 1:48 with the likes of Los Angeles San Diego 1:50 and San Francisco here it is no wonder 1:53 that the state has become North 1:54 America's most populated in today's 1:57 video we are stepping outside of the 1:58 sprawling Metropolis of LA and venturing 2:01 East to the small city of Riverdale 2:03 which of course hangs on the edge of the 2:05 Inland Empire with a population of 2:08 300,000 residents there is plenty to see 2:11 and do here I mean for one you can find 2:13 the world's largest paper cup here which 2:15 is actually made of concrete I have no 2:18 idea why anyone would want to go and see 2:20 that but it is there if you'd like to 2:22 more notably Riverside offers 2:24 picturesque Landscapes a vibrant culture 2:27 and a rich history to all who enter and 2:29 being LED between the Santa Ana River 2:31 and box springs National Park and just a 2:33 Stones throw away from La it is 2:35 certainly worth a visit now 2:37 unfortunately Riverside does have a 2:40 significantly high crime rate placing it 2:42 higher than 87% of all US cities but 2:46 this crime does tend to be localized 2:47 into neighborhoods making some parts a 2:50 little more comfortable for families one 2:52 thing this city does have however is a 2:54 cyber security Center the center is 2:57 designed to provide support for online 2:59 security awareness to the local 3:00 community as you know staying safe 3:03 online is becoming more and more 3:05 difficult in the Modern Age so it's 3:06 great to see the city have such a thing 3:08 here even if you are internet Savvy it 3:11 is easy to be fooled by online threats 3:13 such as malware and malvertising 3:15 sometimes clicking a rogue advertisement 3:17 may actually allow malware family consisting of 32-year-old Jeff 4:41 Hall his current partner letia Hall and 4:44 their two children Joseph and his 4:46 younger sister Shirley now I wish I 4:48 could openly tell you how good this 4:50 family was but unfortunately it's all 4:53 rather dark most of them were wrought 4:55 with turbulence and extreme Behavior so 4:59 I guess will Dive Right In to begin with 5:01 the children's Mother named latia was 5:03 riddled with destructive and dangerous 5:05 habits those including alcohol and drug 5:08 abuse to list a few this included heroin 5:11 methamphetamine and LSD and sadly all of 5:14 these habits spanned well into her 5:16 pregnancies leading to developmental 5:18 issues in both children letia was not 5:21 the only one with issues of substance 5:23 abuse either Jeff was an extremely heavy 5:25 drinker which often resulted in erratic 5:28 and abusive Behavior and sadly he would 5:30 take out his frustration on his partner 5:32 and his two children you could hardly 5:34 say that the two were a matchmade in 5:36 heaven and eventually probably through 5:38 their destructive habits the two split 5:40 up forever likely with a whole lot of 5:42 arguing the children would carry on to 5:44 live with their mother while their 5:45 father remained in the Family household 5:48 but sadly this would not be the end of 5:50 their neglect and abuse letia was not in 5:53 any state of mind to look after her 5:54 children and after the neighbors made 5:56 Social Services aware they were 5:58 astonished to to see the conditions they 6:00 were living in the house had no gas or 6:02 electricity smelled absolutely awful and 6:05 was filthy throughout it was so bad that 6:07 bugs crawled everywhere and in the 6:09 kitchen dishes piled up with maggots on 6:11 the worktops the children themselves 6:14 were dirty and malnourished and sadly 6:16 Joseph and Shirley were covered in 6:18 bruises this story was nothing short of 6:21 tragic simply put there is no excuse for 6:23 a child to be living in such conditions 6:25 especially at such an impressionable age 6:28 the consequences on the mental health 6:30 right through to adulthood could be 6:31 absolutely 6:36 enormous no surprise following a visit 6:38 from Social Services letissia lost 6:40 custody of her children and although her 6:43 children would usually be placed in the 6:44 care of their father he was currently on 6:47 probation for driving under the 6:48 influence of alcohol meaning he too was 6:51 also prohibited from looking after them 6:53 with this being the case their next 6:55 point of call would be their 6:56 grandparents and although they would 6:58 take their grandchildren Joseph and 7:00 Shirley still would not find a peaceful 7:02 or stable household in the meantime 7:04 while his children were clearly going 7:06 through a turbulent and influential 7:08 point in their lives Jeff was off 7:09 finding a new Lover he would eventually 7:11 Remar to a woman named Christa MCC and 7:14 fast forward five years he was now a 7:16 father to three more children all three 7:19 were daughters by the way now after 7:21 finishing with this probation Jeff filed 7:23 for custody of his children and having 7:25 somewhat stable living conditions and 7:27 having found a new partner he was 7:29 successful in getting them back this 7:31 meaning he was now back with his wife 7:33 his initial two children and three more 7:35 kids making a family of seven although Joseph Hall's damaged childhood 7:38 Joseph's new sisters had a slightly 7:40 better start to life both he and his 7:43 sister had endured a traumatizing and 7:45 damaging start to their own of course 7:47 being filled with abuse neglect and 7:49 drinking and sadly this abuse did not 7:52 stop with their new larger family either 7:55 in fact on further inspection it would 7:57 be found out that 23 different child 8:00 protective reports had been filed at the 8:02 new residence due to neglect reported by 8:04 neighbors many of these reports 8:06 highlighted Jeff's abusive Behavior 8:08 towards his son whom he would often kick 8:10 and scream at if he didn't shut up go 8:13 away or calm down you may already see 8:15 where this is going but as often 8:17 experienced in traumatic households this 8:20 history of abuse and neglect would 8:22 eventually be reflected in Joseph's 8:23 Behavior as well he developed habits of 8:26 hitting his older sister and mother and 8:28 liked to start fir in the backyard and 8:30 his very own grandmother would later go 8:32 on to describe him as a violent and 8:34 volatile child I mean what do you expect 8:37 he had a turbulent life at home and his 8:40 school life was no better either you see 8:42 Joseph had been expelled from various 8:44 schools which was extremely worrying for 8:47 a child of only 10 years old he was 8:49 caught hitting other students and staff 8:51 members on numerous occasions and 8:53 whenever he was told off for his 8:54 behavior he appeared confused and did 8:57 not seem to understand 8:59 Joseph was later diagnosed with ADHD a 9:02 condition that makes it more difficult 9:04 for people to concentrate with an 9:06 increased likelihood of impulsivity it 9:08 was also noted that he had deficient 9:10 intelligence for his age likely because 9:13 his mother was drinking alcohol and 9:14 taking drugs while she was pregnant with 9:17 him the situation escalated when he was 9:19 expelled from school for strangling his 9:21 teacher with a phone cord he furthermore 9:24 didn't seem to understand cause and 9:25 effect and didn't seem to understand 9:28 what consequences were this final 9:30 incident LED Joseph to being 9:31 homeschooled instead because none of the 9:33 local schools wanted him anymore and the 9:35 family couldn't afford to send him 9:37 further 9:43 away as we know he hit both his mother 9:46 and stepmother quite frequently but this 9:49 did not stop him from calling crer his 9:50 mother now by no means does this mean 9:53 that she was the perfect parent either 9:55 by the way allegedly Christa also drank 9:57 quite frequently and neglected her 9:59 children for her own needs neither She 10:02 nor Jeff regularly cleaned the house and 10:04 left their kids to roam free among the 10:06 mass so we already know what Joseph's 10:09 father was like he was an abusive and a 10:12 violent person but do you think that any 10:15 of that changed once he had all of his 10:17 kids back with him even after welcoming 10:19 three more children to his family his 10:21 terrible ways continued Jeff was not 10:24 kind outside of the household either in 10:27 fact he was quite the extremist to be 10:29 blunt as the leader of the local 10:31 Socialist Party branch which is the 10:33 official name of the Nazi party Jeff was 10:35 a true white supremacist his goal was to 10:38 create an all-white community and 10:40 segregate the races once again and he 10:42 was so passionate about his beliefs that 10:45 he often said he would die for this 10:47 cause spoiler alert it may be a little 10:49 closer than you think Jeff although he 10:52 was formerly an established plumber in 10:54 the local area he had recently lost his 10:56 employment because of his beliefs and 10:58 his lack of Rel liability but of course 11:00 he blamed the economic downturn of the 11:02 construction industry on all the Jews 11:04 and non-whites Jeff's views made him a 11:07 very hateful man and despite everything 11:09 he has put his son through he was still 11:12 Joseph's role model and sadly of course 11:14 this would further influence the boy's 11:16 violent Behavior I mean when you view it 11:19 that straightforward it suddenly makes 11:21 sense why he would hit his sister's and 11:23 mother in his Tantrums now Jeff was not 11:26 quiet about his beliefs even in front of 11:28 his young family and would even host 11:30 rallies at his home in Riverside as is 11:33 expected of someone who is interested in 11:35 Nazism he was deeply interested in World 11:38 War II and passionately collected 11:40 military weapons in addition to this he 11:43 also taught Joseph how to use firearms 11:45 and throwing knives you know the very 11:48 typical sort of thing that you would 11:49 teach your pre-adolescent son with deep 11:51 anger issues with all of this extremism 11:54 in the household Joseph stood no chance 11:56 of becoming a happy and peaceful young 11:58 man he was surrounded by extensive hate 12:00 speech and Nazi paraphernalia and was 12:03 even taken to rallies and protests fully 12:05 dressed in Nazi uniform they would talk 12:08 of causing harm and even death to those 12:10 unlike them and would often take matters 12:12 into their own hands Joseph was highly 12:15 xenophobic even from a very young age 12:18 and was firmly against subjects like 12:20 immigration in an interview in November 12:22 200 2009 Jeff spoke about his party by 12:25 saying they are proud of who they are 12:28 tired of white guilt being shoved on 12:30 their kids and multiculturalism they 12:32 can't see any reason for 12:37 it now although these gatherings at 12:39 Jeff's home were not full-blown rallies 12:42 they were still heavily influential to 12:43 the party's beliefs imagine a group of 12:46 family friends coming together playing 12:47 party games having a barbecue and 12:50 talking about the death of other people 12:52 it was all quite jarring really so to 12:54 sum things up here we have a young boy 12:56 who has been rehomed twice has an Abus 12:59 of father was expelled from multiple 13:00 schools has been spoonfed extreme 13:02 beliefs and now knows how to use a 13:05 firearm if you ask me I think we now 13:07 have a perfect cocktail for a disaster I 13:10 mean the poor boy hadn't even become a 13:11 teenager yet his brain was cooked with 13:14 so much hate before it even had the 13:15 chance to develop approaching the main 13:18 event in today's story it was on April 13:20 the 30th 2011 that Jeff held another 13:23 Suare at his house nothing out of the 13:25 ordinary happened here as with most of 13:27 these things everything went by without 13:29 fault now Jeff didn't know this at the 13:32 time but this would be the last time he 13:34 would ever host in fact this would be 13:36 the last event he would ever attend 13:38 because soon Jeff would be 13:45 dead on the evening of April the 30th April 30th 2011 13:48 2011 and after seeing all of their 13:50 guests away the whole family sat down to 13:53 watch Yogi Bear in the living room 13:55 although the party had finished and all 13:56 guests had gone home Jeff carried on 13:59 through his Whiskey Bottle while 14:00 watching the movie The drunk father was 14:02 in another one of his bad moods as was 14:05 usually the case while drinking and 14:07 although the room was quiet with the 14:09 rest of the family focusing on the movie 14:11 one comment made by Jeff stuck with his 14:14 son Joseph in his drunken rage Jeff 14:16 taunted that if they didn't listen to 14:19 him he would deactivate all of the home 14:21 smoke detectors and burn the house down 14:23 while they slept following this horrific 14:26 threat Jeff eventually passed out on the 14:28 sofa and being the more responsible of 14:31 the two Christa put all the children to 14:33 bed as she had done many other nights 14:35 before after that all went quiet in the 14:38 Family household at least for now but at 14:41 4:02 a.m. Riverside Police Department 14:44 received a very distressing phone call 14:47 911 emergency my son shot my husband I 14:50 need an ambulance he's 14:53 bleeding how old is your 14:56 son how old is your son 10 14:59 oh my God after hearing a gunshot ring 15:02 out from the living room Christa rushed 15:04 out to the scene along the way she 15:07 passed her stepson Joseph who appeared 15:09 to be running to his bedroom that is 15:11 when she found Jeff's lifeless body 15:14 police swiftly responded to the scene 15:16 discovering Jeff Hall sprawled on the 15:18 sofa drenched in Blood and unresponsive 15:20 a gunshot wound behind his ear hinted at 15:23 a calculated act by the As salant and 15:25 sadly he was declared dead on sight the 15:29 state of the residence was absolutely 15:31 deplorable with scattered clothes and a 15:33 pervasive stench of urine permeating the 15:36 air amid this Grim setting Christa and 15:39 her four daughters were evacuated from 15:41 the premises ensuring their safety 15:44 however Jeff's son the alleged 15:46 perpetrator was conspicuously absent 15:49 from the group a brief search of the 15:51 property led to his Discovery he was 15:53 found hiding beneath the covers of his 15:55 bed and after uncovering a revolver 15:58 which was found under his toys under the 16:00 bed investigators established a direct 16:03 correlation between him and the firearm 16:06 the 10 year-old boy was promptly 16:07 arrested before being escorted into the 16:10 back of a police car by his side was 16:12 officer Michael Foster who was 16:14 designated to help juveniles while on 16:17 his way down to the police station Fair Trial? Legal proceedings... 16:19 Joseph clearly seemed agitated and not 16:22 long after arriving he would eventually 16:24 confess to the crime but this confession 16:27 took a rather un usual turn when his 16:30 statements added a layer of complexity 16:32 to the story it became quite clear that 16:34 Joseph did not fully understand his 16:36 actions this is supported by Officer 16:39 Michael's statement which said he was 16:41 quite sad about it he wish he hadn't 16:44 done it he asked me things like do 16:46 people get more than one life things 16:48 like that following this Joseph was 16:51 transported to juvenile hall where he 16:53 would remain in custody until his trial 16:55 meanwhile his four siblings would be 16:57 placed under a protective custody 16:59 fortunately Joseph's grandmother would 17:01 intervene once again to ensure that they 17:03 were spared from entering foster care 17:06 with Jeff dead Christ MCC was charged 17:08 with the criminal storage of firearms as 17:11 we know both of them loved to collect 17:13 Weaponry most of which were within easy 17:15 reach of Joseph and the sisters it was 17:17 soon discovered that Jeff liked to keep 17:19 a loaded revolver in a cupboard next to 17:21 his bed three of the five children knew 17:24 about this firearm and furthermore it 17:26 was the one used to murder him when 17:29 Joseph entered juvenile hall he was both 17:31 the youngest and the smallest one there 17:34 in fact he was so small and young 17:36 compared to the rest they didn't have 17:37 any shoes in his size after going out to 17:40 buy him shoes that fit Joseph thanked 17:42 the staff and then even asked them if he 17:44 could take the shoes back home with him 17:46 when he left this further highlighting 17:48 that he had no understanding of the 17:49 situation the boy remained largely 17:52 emotionless in his initial interviews 17:54 only responding when being spoken to he 17:57 also responded to way leing his Miranda 17:59 rights which of course is the following 18:01 you have the right to remain silent 18:03 anything you say may be used against you 18:05 in court you have the right to talk to a 18:08 lawyer and have your attorney present 18:09 with you while you are being questioned 18:12 and if you cannot afford to hire a 18:13 lawyer one will be appointed to 18:15 represent you the great thing about 18:17 Miranda rights is that they allow you to 18:19 remain silent until you have a qualified 18:22 lawyer and attorney the problem is that 18:24 officers asked these questions to a 18:26 young boy who clearly did not not 18:28 understand what they were talking about 18:30 in short these officers were inviting 18:32 him to speak without a lawyer present 18:35 this is wild because how is a 18:37 10-year-old boy with learning 18:39 difficulties supposed to even know what 18:41 his Miranda rights are in addition to 18:43 this they even allowed him to talk about 18:46 the incident for two whole minutes 18:48 before he was even offered them even 18:50 stranger is that due to his age his 18:52 stepmother was in the room while the 18:54 interrogation took place and despite 18:57 being a supposedly fully grown adult she 18:59 was just as bloody clueless all of this 19:02 came as a significant detriment to 19:05 Joseph children at this age rarely 19:07 understand the implications or 19:09 Consequences of their actions and as we 19:12 already know he was unfortunately on the 19:14 slower side of his age group too 19:16 throughout the interrogation process he 19:18 told the officers exactly what they 19:20 wanted to hear Joseph confessed that he 19:23 was angry and frightened after his 19:25 father threatened to hurt his family and 19:28 that furthermore he thought that 19:30 something had to be done he also said 19:32 that he didn't know any other way out of 19:34 the situation which scared him according 19:37 to the boy he had recently watched a TV 19:39 show called Criminal Minds where he 19:41 watched an abused boy of his age shoot 19:43 his father in the face and get away 19:45 without any consequences and after 19:48 watching this episode he thought that 19:50 maybe nothing would happen to him if he 19:52 did the same and so on the night his 19:54 father was passed out on the sofa he 19:57 crept to his parents bedroom silently 19:59 grabbed the revolver from his cupboard 20:01 and shot his father in the side of the 20:03 head Joseph would later say I just 20:06 thought that maybe he might learn a 20:08 lesson I was trying to make him feel how 20:10 I feel when I get hurt then maybe we 20:13 could go back to being friends and all 20:16 start over addressing Christa he Then 20:18 followed up by saying I think I'm going 20:21 to miss dad Kinder if he's 20:27 dead 20:29 so the question is did Joseph really 20:32 understand right from wrong in this 20:34 situation did he know that his actions 20:36 would kill his father and that he could 20:38 face legal consequences or was more at 20:41 play here well yes Joseph did know what 20:44 he was doing as wrong we know this 20:46 because he was influenced by the True 20:47 Crime show he also made a rather naive 20:50 attempt to hide himself and the gun 20:52 after the crime further indicating that 20:54 he knew what he was doing was wrong and 20:56 this attack was apparently premeditate 20:58 itated too because 4 days before the 21:00 murder he told his sister that he wanted 21:02 to kill his father so all the pain would 21:04 stop but of course Joseph's very own 21:07 confession was more compelling for 21:09 investigators and so at the very young 21:12 age of 10 years old he was officially 21:14 charged for his father's murder and if 21:16 convicted he would face a sentence at 21:18 the Juvenile Correctional Facility 21:20 potentially being held there until the 21:22 age of 21:27 25 once again moving to the legal 21:29 proceedings of this case Joseph's trial 21:31 commenced in 2013 when he was just 12 21:34 years old his defense team opted for an 21:37 inany plea during the trial citing 21:39 factors such as his tumultuous 21:41 upbringing ADHD diagnosis low 21:44 intelligence and behavioral issues as 21:46 contributing elements Joseph's 21:48 grandmother candidly expressed that the 21:50 boy had always been problematic and 21:52 prone to violence she emphasized the 21:55 dangerous combination of these traits 21:57 with his exposure to Violent ideologies 21:59 and Firearms again portraying a volatile 22:03 situation that was merely waiting to 22:05 unfold contrary to this narrative in his 22:08 own opening statement prosecutor Michael 22:11 sakio asserted that the motive for the 22:13 murder was not rooted in Jeff's 22:15 ideologies he further clarified that 22:17 Joseph did not kill his father because 22:19 of the latter's affiliation with Nazi 22:21 beles instead he contended that Joseph's 22:24 actions were driven by a desire to 22:27 protect his mother and and sisters from 22:29 potential abuse he further said that 22:31 Joseph would have shot his father even 22:33 if he was a member of the Peace and 22:35 Freedom Party now at times our 22:37 ideologies can Cloud our perception of 22:40 undeniable facts and in Joseph's case he 22:43 is unequivocally a murderer and while 22:45 some may hail him as a hero for 22:47 eliminating a white supremacist the true 22:49 motive behind the Act was not rooted in 22:52 an anti-s supremacist stance described 22:55 as a sympathetic killer Joseph's case 22:57 elicited under understanding and even 22:59 pity from many this included the judge 23:01 Michael sakio who had never prided over 23:04 a child especially for a murder charge 23:07 during his trial Joseph remained 23:09 remarkably still and Silent likely 23:11 following instructions the first 23:14 emotional hint of him grasping the 23:16 gravity of his actions would surface 23:18 when the 911 call from his stepmother 23:20 was played in the courtroom prompting a 23:22 visible change in his demeanor as he 23:24 dropped his shoulders and looked down 23:26 solemnly Joseph confession attitude and 23:29 admission of guilt along with his 23:31 acknowledgment of right from wrong 23:32 during interrogations played a pivotal 23:35 role in determining his final 23:39 sentence in the year 2013 and at the age 23:42 of 13 Joseph received a sentence to a 23:45 juvenile detention center until he turns 23:47 23 that being just 2 years shy of the 23:50 maximum possible sentence now Jeff 23:53 Hall's terrible character evident not 23:55 only in his beliefs but also in his 23:57 treatment of his family might lend some 24:00 sort of understanding to Joseph's 24:01 actions the 10-year-old boy who was 24:04 arguably feeble-minded and mentally ill 24:07 was provided with both motive and means 24:09 to inflict harm ironically turning them 24:11 against the very person who taught him 24:14 these things while Joseph was only 10 24:16 years old at the time the deliberate Act 24:19 of taking another person's life 24:21 qualifies him as a murderer regardless 24:23 of his age and for that there must be 24:25 some sort of punishment behind his 24:27 Behavior the question is if he had not 24:29 been 10 at the time would he have still 24:32 committed the ACT later well according 24:34 to his grandmother and expressed in a 60 24:36 Minutes interview such a possibility is 24:39 not farfetched and this raises further 24:41 unsettling questions about the factors 24:44 that shaped Joseph's disturbing path in 24:46 this interview she said I wasn't 24:48 surprised by it I just somehow felt that 24:51 it could always happen but I would have 24:53 thought that it would have been when he 24:55 was 24:56 older 24:58 now technically Joseph should be a free Outro 25:00 man today but with no news of his 25:03 release there are only two possible 25:04 options either one he is still behind 25:07 bars or two he has already been released 25:10 but with a new identity we can only hope 25:12 that Juvenile Detention has served this 25:14 man well and if there are any updates in 25:17 the future I will be sure to let you 25:18 know now this story has quite a hard 25:21 question behind it do you think that 25:23 Joseph Hall received the correct 25:25 sentence many believe that Joseph was 25:27 mely acting out as a victim against the 25:30 abuse that his father set upon him and 25:32 that he was too young naive and 25:33 unintelligent to understand what he was 25:35 doing but on the other hand he did 25:37 murder another person and many believe 25:39 that he should face legal consequence 25:42 it's a hard one to wrap your head around 25:43 really many believe that if you kill 25:45 somebody while defending yourself you 25:47 should not face legal consequence and 25:49 although Joseph was not an immediate 25:51 danger at the time of killing his father 25:53 it was very clear that he did pose a 25:55 risk to his safety anyway folks I'll 25:57 leave you to come to your own conclusion 25:59 so as always please let me know what you 26:01 think in the comments down below
