its Precision craftsmanship Culinary Artistry and K eut Japan's cultural 1:43 influence seems to extend far beyond its borders yet beneath its rather polite 1:48 facade lies a complex World Grappling with societal pressures and demographic shifts pressure that at times manifests 1:56 itself in the most morbid of ways our video today begins Northwest of Tokyo in Ana Saito 2:02 ASA Japan and one of those living there was firste Middle School student Anna Sao now Anna isn't actually her real 2:09 name much like the commonly used Western name Jane Doe it's a placeholder name often used when the true name of a 2:15 person is either unknown or hidden our story today begins in the year 2014 and born in the year 2001 Anna was 13 years 2:23 old at the time not a lot is known about her former childhood or her family but what is known is that she grew up with 2:29 both parents by her side in a comfortable home in aaka she was described as intelligent and witty for 2:34 her age and was also known to be kind and well behaved in other words not one to Break The Rules or rebel against her 2:40 parents overall there was really nothing abnormal about her she was sweet like to 2:45 spend time with her friends and was well-liked in school teachers described her as a clever girl with a very 2:50 prosperous future she likes to participate in ballet and although she was only in her first year of Middle 2:56 School Anna showed a significant amount of commitment by becoming a member of the student council smart promising and 3:02 punctual these were the three words used to describe anner however in March 2014 3:07 that final characteristic would for want of a better word 3:18 disappear March 10th 2014 it was a Monday and the weather was 3:24 partly cloudy with a low temperature dipping just below freezing the time was 3:30 P.M a.m. school had just finished 3:31 for the day and Anna was making her way home via her usual route although she was only 13 years old she was trusted to 3:37 make it back home safely by herself you see in Japan it is very normal for children to walk home from a very young 3:44 age even without the tradition of trust Japan is considered a very safe country to live in therefore seeing a young 3:50 child on their own walking home is nothing out of the ordinary but when Anna's parents returned home after their 3:56 own long days at work Anna was uncharacteristically known where to be seen Searchers around the house and 4:02 calling her name in the garden yielded no response back and calling her friends and the school was not productive either 4:08 as no one had seen her the sco family were beginning to panic and that is when they realized waiting for them in the 4:14 post box was a letter it didn't say much but the handwriting was unmistakably hers and written inside it said I'm 4:22 taking a break from school and home don't come looking for me now this was 4:27 highly out of character for Anna she was a well behaved young girl who would have never struck out on her own accord like 4:33 this furthermore if she did actually want to run away from her parents then why did she leave all her favorite 4:38 possessions and her Essentials behind none of this made any sense the syo family were very quick to report a 4:44 disappearance to the authorities and by Nightfall wanted posters were being displayed all across the local area 4:51 these posters highlighted that she was likely wearing a school uniform at the time of her disappearance unfortunately 4:57 the authorities didn't have a lot of leads to go on and although a neighbor was able to confirm that they had seen 5:02 her that afternoon it didn't lead to any major breakthroughs but alarmingly the neighbor did highlight that she was 5:08 speaking to a young man outside of her home which led officers to believe that she was either abducted or had run away 5:14 with him but sadly nothing more came from the sighting and as the sun rose over Tokyo Anna's family realized that 5:21 this was so much more than just a nightmare their daughter had vanished Without a Trace and there was nothing 5:26 they could do ours soon turned into days and as those passed the family were 5:31 getting increasingly desperate but on the ninth day of her disappearance another letter found its way to the 5:37 scoto family's post box and this one read I'm doing fine I apologize for 5:42 causing so much stress don't look for me investigators intervened to analyze the Letter's handwriting and although it was 5:49 confirmed to belong to Anna its mannerisms did not match the way in which she spoke it was therefore 5:54 theorized that she may have been forced to write this the stamp on the letter confirmed that it was sent from from 5:59 Chiba prefecture located 25 Mi east of Tokyo local officers were assigned to 6:05 look into it but their efforts would ultimately be fruitless and although the family had hoped to receive another 6:10 letter from Anna their hopes would never come to fruition because after this Anna would go radio silent and just like that 6:18 she [Music] 6:28 disappeared unknown to the rest of the world Anna 6:34 had been abducted by a man named kabu terauchi and kabo was a very strange and 6:40 weird man born in the year 1992 kabo was 22 years old at the time of Anna disappearance originally from Aida 6:47 located in Osaka prefecture he was raised in a wealthy family both parents were successful business owners with his 6:53 father owning a security company which specialized in physical home security components this included things such as 6:59 door locks window fences and rails now kaboo did very well in high school and was often ranked at the very top of his 7:05 class however he was known to be quiet and didn't have many friends either and in fact he seemed to be quite obsessive 7:12 over particular things and sometimes came across quite creepy he was even considered to be somewhat of a hiku 7:18 Kumori and nataku for reference Japan refers to hikori as a form of severe social withdrawal characterized by teens 7:26 and adults who are extreme recluses and are often unable to work or go to school ataku are people who are obsessed with 7:32 particular aspects of Pop Culture such as Manga and Anime and in kab's case this was anime kabo was ultimately very 7:40 successful with his academics he attended an aviation School in Tokyo before eventually moving to California 7:45 where he obtained his pilot's license from another Aviation school after graduating in September 2013 he then 7:52 made the move back to Tokio where he undertook an engineering degree at chibi University while studying here Pierce 7:58 called him quiet particular particular and a little odd but as far as they knew he was happy enough but no one knew of 8:04 his new dark and terrible secrets and from March 2014 onwards he kept 13-year-old Anna captive in his home 8:11 during the days he would attend classes and see friends as if nothing was happening before returning to his home 8:17 in the evenings to focus on his own human experiment so before we continue with this story it may be worth asking 8:23 ourselves what precisely happened in the leadup to Anna's sudden abduction well it All Began about one week prior kabo 8:31 had long desired to abduct and observe a young female student he wanted to see how her thoughts behavior and body would 8:37 change over time and furthermore he wanted to isolate her from society and see how she would react under his own 8:43 soul influence he started his plan by searching for the optimal place to find a victim doing this through an 8:49 internet-based mapping application very similar to Google Maps this is how he found a city that fit his criteria and 8:55 Asaka seemed to be the perfect place for him to carry out the abduction it met all of the right conditions since it was 9:01 neither Countryside nor too Urban and although kaboo was not familiar with the city he was able to visit it in person 9:07 and observe it online now that the location had been selected he drove to aaka to scope the place and its victims 9:13 out this is when he came across Anna Sayo he noticed that she often walked home alone from school and recognized he 9:20 could use this to his Advantage after following her he decided to do some investigating and after looking through 9:25 the home's placard and various other items around the property he learned of her actual name it was 1 week later on 9:32 March the 10th 2014 that he finally decided to kidnap her it was a Monday and at around 400 p.m. Anna was walking 9:39 home from school and this is when kaboo approached her from outside of her own home he tricked her into going with him 9:44 by falsely telling her that her parents were getting divorced and that he was the family's lawyer and furthermore he 9:50 was willing to take her to both of her parents who were supposedly waiting at his office since kaboo knew Anna's full 9:56 name she unfortunately believed him and the story and therefore agreed to get into his car however instead of going to 10:02 an office he then drove 40 mi from aaka to his own home in Chiba it was at this stage that kaboo had a new and very 10:09 different story to tell her he now claimed that her parents were actually planning on killing her the family were 10:14 supposedly now in debt and they wanted to fix this by cutting out her internal organs and selling them on the black 10:20 market in addition to this he presented a forged audio recording to her which allegedly revealed a discussion between 10:27 her parents agreeing to such an idea idea and this is where the real persuasion and manipulation began he 10:33 started to tell Anna that he was the only one who cared for her and the only one who would protect her that he was 10:38 her new savior the only one she could rely on he also told her things such as nobody is coming for you nobody cares 10:46 about you you've been thrown away and you're all alone over the weeks months and then years this repeated narrative 10:53 started to become factual in Her Mind by the way this psychological phenomenon is actually quite common and it even has a 10:59 name the elusory truth effect is the tendency to believe false information to be correct after repeated exposure 11:06 repetition makes statements easy to process compared to new unrepeated statements leading people to believe 11:11 that the repeated conclusion is more truthful now Anna was in an extremely influential stage of her life at 13 she 11:19 was old enough to understand the core workings of the world but she was still rapidly learning new things within novel 11:25 environments she couldn't fully discern what was fact from fiction and alongside his repetitive rhetoric she started to 11:32 believe kaboo add the widely known phenomenon of Stockholm syndrome to the mix which is a condition where a hostage 11:38 develops feelings of trust and affection towards the captor and she was evidently wrapped in a world full of confusion her 11:44 mind was playing a game of psychological warfare for many months and even years after this and while she recognized that 11:51 something wasn't quite right about her situation she stayed put alongside him unfortunately kaboo was busy with his 11:57 own experiments too the young man had become obsessed with brainwashing and hallucinogens and after learning that 12:03 morning glory flowers had hallucinogenic properties he would frequently her drinks with them Anna was confined to a 12:09 single room within his apartment which as we know was located 25 Mi east of Tokyo in Chiba the room was heavily 12:16 guarded by kaboo almost all of the time and although she was given Comforts and conveniences he made it very hard for 12:22 her to escape for example the bedroom door could only be opened from the outside and all external windows and 12:28 Patio doors were locked and ironically the iron rails bolted on the outside of his property were actually proprietary 12:35 to his own father's security business now there were actually multiple occasions where kaboo forgot to close a 12:41 window or door and on these occasions Anna wandered a short distance from the property only to return before he got 12:47 back home Anna did find the courage and strength to escape during one of these Ventures but after approaching her 12:53 mother and asking her for help she said she had her own children to look after and Sho Anna away trying a second in 12:59 time several weeks later Anna made her way to a local park where she found an old woman but unfortunately after asking 13:06 for help this woman refused and ignored her both of these occasions reinforced The Narrative that no one cared about 13:12 Anna and that furthermore she had no better place to be than Cabo's apartment 13:17 and although kaboo never found out about Adventures outside neither did anyone else with not a single neighbor noticing 13:23 her exit the apartment or wander around the area on occasion kaboo would actually take her out outside on small 13:30 excursions she sometimes accompanied him for dinner to a restaurant or to a supermarket but she was always unable to 13:36 escape because she was forced to hold his hand this highly abnormal and dysfunctional Dynamic continued for a 13:42 large stretch of time and by February of 2016 anasto had been missing for almost 13:48 2 years the burden and pain her mother and father felt was enormous it is no 13:53 secret that a child missing for that length of time is usually indicative of very bad news but but despite 23 months 14:00 of Silence they still held on to hope she was still out there somewhere both of them could instinctively feel it and 14:07 Anna was indeed still alive although under captivity with kaboo still watching and observing her in 14:13 anticipation of his imminent graduation from Chiba University he made the move from Chiba to an apartment near higashi 14:19 Nano station found in Tokyo's Nano Ward this move was the first one he had made in years and Anna would go with him now 14:27 the apartment was nothing special but it did do its job located a few floors up it had a balcony and a somewhat 14:33 restricted view of Tokyo and hey the bedroom that Anna was kept in even had a door handle this time which is a very 14:40 important detail to the next part of our story because that was when on Sunday 14:45 March 27th 2016 a very sudden and shocking twist in the story occurred a 14:50 phone call was made to the SAU residents and after Anna's mother picked up the receiver a small voice responded back it 14:57 was Anna and her mother instantly knew it was her she hadn't heard her daughter's voice for 2 years 2 weeks and 15:04 3 days yet here she was on the other end of the line Anna had finally managed to 15:09 escape from Cabo's home after being told that he was heading out to Akihabara City to buy a mobile phone she bed her 15:15 time and checked the locks fortunately he had forgotten to lock the door and so after waiting a few minutes she grabbed 15:21 170 n from the kitchen about $130 or1 Sterling after running out of the 15:27 apartment she found herself Tashi Nano station and after noticing the green public pay phones she made the call back 15:33 home moments later she called the police she was wearing sandals and a thin set of clothes which clearly was not enough 15:40 to Shield against Japan's cold winter and after recognizing that she was the one in the missing posters police 15:46 officers then escorted her to nits police station located inside Tama and hours later she was finally reunited 15:52 with her parents miraculously Anna was in pretty good health and in Fairly High Spirits and although she' spent 2 years 15:59 in captivity fortunately she was not subject to any physical or sexual violence now as far as these stories can 16:06 go the conclusion so far had been one of great happiness Not only was she alive and uninjured but it seemed as if she 16:13 was not victim to any abuse either however there were other parameters that officers would now have to look at and 16:20 unfortunately it became pretty obvious that a 2-year long experience had greatly and negatively affected her 16:26 mental health Anna had developed a severe case case of PTSD and anxiety she 16:31 was 2 years behind school and without dressing it up had lost 2 years of her childhood so although the initial 16:38 conclusion seemed to be pretty good the road to recovery would be long and uncertain following her escape and the 16:44 heavy presence of the authorities kabo knew he was in a ton of trouble and in a panic he escaped to the countryside 16:50 to plan out his next move he wouldn't get very far though as at around 3:00 a.m. the next morning he was finally 16:57 detained by police officers after they responded to an emergency call made by newspaper delivery man he was found 17:03 standing in the road with a box cutter covered in blood with a substantial laceration injury to his neck he 17:09 eventually admitted that he' attempted to take his own life by slashing his neck with a box cutter though with a 17:14 blade so blunt all he did was managed to make a mess of it kaboo was admitted to the hospital discharged 3 days later and 17:22 then arrested immediately upon exit after his arrest kabo admitted that he'd wanted to carry out a kidnapping ever 17:28 since since his young teenage years while in junior high school he also admitted that on the night he tried to take his own life he fled North to the 17:35 countryside got drunk on beer and whiskey and then tried to use the box cutter found on the back of a receipt on 17:40 his being were the words I committed a terrible crime therefore suggesting his intention but as we know he would not 17:46 get the results he wanted and in return for his own life he would now have to face the courts of Tokyo instead now 17:53 kabo had actually graduated from uni just 5 days before his arrest but before his trial even began they would strip 17:59 him of his degree and all possible merits moving into the legal proceedings of this case Cabo's trial began in 18:05 August 2017 however the judge ultimately postponed a ruling after kaboo threw his 18:10 trial into confusion with some extremely erratic Behavior kabo made strange noises spoke unintelligibly shrieked as 18:17 he entered the courtroom and even claimed to be a fairy of the forest he further claimed that he no longer 18:23 understood Japanese and was now an amoeba which is a single cell and often parasitic or organism that can invade a 18:30 host and sometimes even consume brain tissue it's not entirely clear if this was an act to appear insane or if he had 18:37 truly lost the plot a psychiatric evaluation conducted by the court found that he did in fact have a mild case of 18:43 autism but there were otherwise no other conditions they could definitively conclude on prosecutors claimed that 18:49 kaboo should be held liable as the kidnapping and confinement of anasayo was deliberately planned and executed 18:55 but his defense countered this arguing that he should not be held responsible for his actions as he was suffering from 19:01 schizophrenia the judge who ultimately ruled the decision commented that the defendant was aware that his actions 19:06 were both wrong and illegal as he made multiple attempts to prevent them from being revealed one of these attempts 19:12 included the use of a stolen number plate during the Abduction the judge further said the confinement lasted for 19:18 a significantly long period of time dealing an unimaginable blow to the victim by depriving her of her precious 19:24 time the defense argued that Anna's account suggested there was no physical violence or verbal or sexual abuse 19:30 during her confinement but Anna's own psychological review was not so positive 19:35 it concluded that she had developed a severe case of PTSD as a result of his actions and even a year after her 19:41 release she was still suffering from debilitating flashbacks and was still struggling to readjust to society she 19:48 furthermore had severe social issues struggled to connect to people and was often too scared to go outside alone 19:54 kaboo himself argued that he'd only committed the crime because quote the instructions were sent to my brain and 20:01 he also said that he was very sorry to the examination subject when asked why he was calling her that he said he 20:06 considered his crime to be an experimentation and he further added that he wanted to treat her as an animal 20:12 not as a human being on March the 12th 2018 The saitama District Court sentenced kabuchi to 9 years in prison 20:19 for his role in abducting and imprisoning Anna but there appeared to be some contention on both sides of this 20:24 verdict while the public prosecutors demanded a minimum term of 15 years kabo unsurprisingly wanted less and appealed 20:31 but the high courts rejected his appeal and to really rub saltan the wound in February 2019 they readjusted a sentence 20:38 to 12 years instead nullifying the Lower Court ruling of nine with his arrest occurring in 2016 he has already served 20:45 more than half of his sentence Behind Bars he is scheduled to be released from prison in the year 2028 in the meanwhile 20:52 Anna has moved on with her life and will be 27 by the time he is released Anna's father said that deep down he believed 20:59 that eventually she would return home seeing her for the first time in 2 years his first words to her were you hung in 21:05 there welcome back speaking to the press her father shared I am really relieved I 21:11 want to spend time with my daughter so that we can regain the time we've lost Anna claims that one of the many things 21:17 which gave her hope was being aware of her parents' efforts and actions throughout the months and years she hadd 21:22 become aware of their activities via the Internet which she frequently had access to while kaboo was out of the apartment 21:28 several articles described her family leading search parties to find her and her father frequently handing out flyers 21:34 to the general public it is unclear what Anna is up to these days as quite obviously she's trying to hide from the 21:40 spotlight but I hope that wherever she is and whatever she's doing she's happy and thriving in her environment although Rie Isogai 21:46 Anna's case ended relatively peacefully I unfortunately can't say the same about the next one this Story begins in iich 21:53 prefecture and deep in the folds of the dark web now many of us are aware that the dark web can be used for rather 22:00 illegal activities but what if I told you that it can also be used for murder well this story highlights one of those 22:06 moments and the terrible consequences that followed and so without further Ado here is the case of r as ay now despite 22:14 its ominous sounding name not all of the dark web is used for illicit purposes but indeed it is an area for scammers 22:21 fraudsters and other illegal activity to flourish and throughout recent years fonus activity here has become more 22:27 frequent more severe and even more creative the worst corners of the dark web includes forgery and hacking illegal 22:35 pornography and even murder for higher services and on August 17th 2007 amongst 22:41 this dark virtual world one fateful message appeared in the forums of one of these hidden websites I'm looking for a 22:48 partner in crime the message read I just got out of prison would anyone else like to work with me in the toay region the 22:55 ominous messages author went by the username Yamashita which was a pseudonym used for Yam no Shuan roughly 23:01 translating to the job of darkness in English and the person behind it was a 40-year-old man who went by the name of 23:08 Kenji kawagishi Kenji was not your typical stand-up citizen bullied as a child due to his ongoing kidney disease 23:15 he became a delinquent in Japan society and although he eventually settles down with a wife and four children after 23:21 several minor convictions he would sadly eventually return to the world of illegal activity in August of 1999 he 23:28 began to use the dark web to obtain open and sell bank accounts which could then be used for a fraudulent activity 23:35 although this brought in extra cash for the family his spending habits rapidly outweighed this new stream of income and 23:41 by 2002 his apartment was ultimately seized due to tax fraud and missing mortgage repayments now unfortunately 23:48 Kenji was also allegedly abusive towards his family yet thankfully his wife didn't put up with this she and 23:55 the kids fled for their safety shortly after these signs started to appear appear and eventually the two settled 24:00 for divorce but Kenji grew exhausted with his life after this and between the years 2003 and 2007 he was in and out of 24:08 prison on several convictions of fraud despite these charges he continued to use the dark web after this and often 24:13 moved from job to job which was usually in transportation or commercial security at the time of posting his message on 24:19 the dark web he had just come out of prison on yet again more fraudulent activity and was now living out of his 24:24 car in isai city and after reaching out into the unknown world world of the dark web three other men responded just a 24:31 heads up but we're going to exclude one of them as eventually he bailed out of the scheme and was never involved in 24:37 this case however the other two were far more guilty sukasa Kanda was a 36-year-old with a similarly troubled 24:44 history to Kenji bullied at school and suffering from chronic headaches he was also abused by his father and this 24:50 volatile and deeply harmful environment led tasa to join local gangs and commit minor crimes however eventually in 19 89 24:59 he graduated from takasaki Technical High School he began to use the dark web in 1997 was convicted of Fraud and then 25:07 found himself a job at the newspaper company isahi shiman allegedly he often got in trouble with his colleagues and 25:13 his boss and his Tome salary was so low that he received weekly pocket money from his girlfriend to support him at 25:19 the time and so similar to Kenji sakasa was also in debt and was financially 25:24 desperate Yoshi tomori a 32-year-old darts player from the same area area also responded to the message and 25:30 although he had no prior criminal history he was over 4 million yen in debt the equivalent of 25:36 $3,000 or £25,000 although there were several other replies to the message on the dark 25:42 web Kenji selected these two to work with and just a few days later on August 21st 2007 the three met at Yosi Tomo's 25:49 residence it is here that they began to formulate a devious scheme to make money all three men were in crippling debt and 25:56 blinded by both panic and greed they simultaneously expressed a cold disregard for the welfare of others 26:02 their drafts contained several plans which included pickpocketing kidnapping and even a heist against a Pachinko 26:08 parlor which by the way is a type of Japanese Casino the trio tried to conduct one of these plans the next day 26:14 on August 22nd and their plan was rather simple Target a Pachinko paraa customer 26:20 follow him home and then abduct him and Rob him of his money however after tailing his Lexus vehicle they realized 26:26 his home was alarmed and he had a dog and so there was no way they were going to get him after following another 26:31 Target home the next day they were very disappointed to realize that he was in a very tight security building and so yet 26:37 again the heist was called off the group came closest to making money when they used a stolen credit card to buy a gold 26:43 necklace at the local Don kyot but sadly or rather not sadly this also failed by 26:49 the way for those who don't know Don coyot is an incredible experience to have when visiting Japan the buildings 26:54 are usually massive and sells pretty much everything you can think of and and in a good way I remember being 26:59 absolutely overwhelmed when I went there from instant noodles to Underpants frying pans to dog beds and Pokémon 27:06 costumes all the way through to uh Tanga eggs Don kyote has you covered it's kind 27:12 of like a multi-level department store cross treasure hunt and I bet my bottom dollar that you'll be sure to leave with 27:17 a suitcase worths of stuff the place sells really cool stuff and not even sure why but when I went on coyot I 27:24 bought 10 of these in like 10 different colors kind of cool though right anyway so it appears that our three men 27:30 were not having any luck with their plans and with their failure came both frustration and Desperation and 27:36 tragically the very next day and after upping the ante their devious schemes would come with some very harrowing 27:47 consequences August 24th 2007 it was a Friday and at 10 p.m. that evening young 27:53 office worker R isagi was walking through the streets of ngoya to return home from her job the day was long in 27:59 the tooth and with it being a Friday the working week had overstayed its welcome rier worked in the office of a semilocal 28:05 firm most of her tasks were administrative meaning she was not someone particularly high ranking in the 28:11 company but was just as essential to keep it ticking along trying to find recognition and reward for her hard work 28:17 she stayed late to finish her duties that Friday and by the time she had almost made it home that night the 28:22 streets of Kanagawa were dark and silent but no worries she only had a few more corn to walk to make it back to her 28:29 front door looking into her past R had always been a hardworking and thoughtful individual she was born on July 20th 28:37 1976 to her father soshi and mother fiko sadly she was only a child when her 28:42 father passed away this tragically leaving both her and her mother to fend for themselves but through this the two 28:48 formed an Inseparable Bond and although she dropped out of high school she impressed her mother by jumping straight 28:54 into work to add to this R even held on to the dream of one day buying her mother a house rier loved board games in 29:01 fact one of her favorites was called go and in her spare time she often met friends and even made new ones at go 29:07 cafes across the city she was a strong willed person yet caring all the same time and now that she had reached her 29:13 30s she was focused on progressing her career which takes us back to the story to August 24th 2007 residing in k 2 of 29:21 jakusa w in Nagoya Ria used the higashiyama line to reach her local station at motoyama this was part of her 29:28 usual commute and once there she made the one M walk back home it was just past 11:00 p.m. when she walked past an 29:34 idle vehicle and with no reason to be alarmed she ignored it without giving it any second thought it was at this moment 29:41 though that the car made a u-turn and discretely passed by rier peering up she noticed a man nervously looking around 29:48 at the buildings and as she approached him he turned around to ask her a question politely I'm looking for the 29:54 local convenience store do you know where I could find it Ria stopped to answer however before she could even 30:01 answer him she turned around to see another man lunge at her and all in the meanwhile the car she had spotted before 30:07 had now hastily parked up next to them R screamed out loud but nobody in the neighborhood had heard her and before 30:13 she even knew it she was in the back of their vehicle a vehicle that was now speeding off into the 30:24 distance the consequences of that night were discovered the very next day a body 30:30 was found around 35 Mi Northeast of ngoya and in the mountains near mitsun Nami it had been partially buried near a 30:37 bridge from Route 33 and tragically this body belonged to the as a guy she was 30:43 discovered by the authorities just after 700 p.m. meaning she had been missing for just over 20 hours despite being 30:49 concealed in a remote location she had been discovered very quickly for a very good reason because the one to break the 30:56 news would be none other than one of The Killers themselves earlier that day the authorities were greeted with a very 31:02 concerning phone call and after picking up the phone the voice said I kidnapped a woman I stole her money killed her and 31:08 then buried her in gefu prefecture as you can likely guess the three men to abduct in Kill Reus the guy were Kenji 31:15 yoso and sakasa and she'd become their first and only victim from the dark web after abducting R and planning to rob 31:22 her of all her money they then murdered her In Cold Blood before moving 35 miles out of town and dumping her body however 31:29 it seems like it didn't take long for kenji's sanity to break because by Sunrise he had become extremely paranoid 31:36 after making the call he was detained by seven police officers dispatched from the Midori police station and after 31:41 being questioned for 15 minutes he was taken to the mobile investigations unit before leading officers to the site now 31:47 Kenji was absolutely terrified of capital punishment however under Japanese law he was not allowed to be 31:53 executed if he surrendered himself first and so after his despicable actions Kenji was left with two options try to 32:00 evade the law and risk his life or give up his free life and guarantee survival Kenji chose the latter and in addition 32:07 to this he even confessed that he had the help of two other accomplices and even provided both their names and 32:13 addresses yoshitomo and sakasa were arrested the very same evening and just hours later R's body would be formally 32:20 identified by her mother naturally fam was distraught by the news R was her one 32:25 and only child with a father who had died decades before the entirety of her family had now been lost and Rey's 32:32 absence left a massive hole in her heart she described identifying her daughter's body as an outof body experience and 32:39 despite her daughter's body's chilling condition she hugged her tightly through the pain and anguish colleagues of rier 32:45 were devastated too they had known her for many years Not only was she just a colleague but she was also a friend too 32:52 by midnight the special investigations unit publicly announced R isi's murder they further report reported that three 32:58 men had been arrested and believed that no one else was at risk although only one had openly surrendered to the 33:04 authorities Kenji yoshitomo and sassa all eventually confessed to their crimes they told investigators that they had 33:10 met through the dark web and that the primary motive was greed to settle their unpaid debts furthermore they also 33:17 confessed that they were willing to do anything to achieve this which sadly included murder the details of this 33:23 crime are particularly saddening after being abducted rier was handcuffed in inside the car and driven to a secluded 33:29 area the vehicle used to transport her belonged to Kenji and had been unlawfully obtained through one of his 33:34 former fraud schemes through the dark web her bag was looted which at the time contained 62,000 Yen the equivalent of 33:42 $450 or $380 she was then further pressed to provide her bank card's pin number but 33:48 unknown to all three of them at the time she had given them a fake one shortly after this rier was then suffocated and 33:54 beaten with a hammer approximately 30 times and eventually she heartbreakingly succumbed to her brutal injuries the 34:01 three asants then stopped by a hardware store purchased two shovels headed out into the mountainous Countryside and at 34:08 around 4:30 a.m. dumped her body in msami at around 9:00 a.m. that morning 34:13 they tried to withdraw money from her bank account using the pin that R had provided them 2960 or was it 2946 or 2460 astoundingly 34:23 it seems that remembering four simple digits required far too much intelligence for the these three men as 34:28 all three of them had forgotten what she had said despite already showing incredible levels of stupidity it takes 34:34 a special kind of stupid to come to the next conclusion but since they had failed to make any money this time 34:40 around all three agreed to meet again later that evening to find another woman to abduct Rob and murder however as we 34:46 all know before they could even get there kenji's conscious thankfully got the better of him following the loss of 34:52 her daughter famika made it her mission to punish her three killers just as hard as they had punished her and 10 days of 34:58 R's death she had launched a campaign calling for the death penalty for all three men by the 10th day she' received 35:04 the support of 100,000 people by October was 150,000 and by December was 318,000 35:11 signatures not only that but incredibly even yosha Tomo and kenji's fathers begged the courts for the death penalty 35:18 although single murders ready face the death penalty in Japan this case seemed to drum up a lot of anger in the general 35:24 public and not only that but recent Trends showed that people favored stricter punishments initial Court 35:30 proceedings began roughly one year later in September 2008 and in this first session all three admitted to robbing 35:37 and murdering rier they further admitted that things got out of hand when they tried to live up to their boasting 35:43 online this is because all three men had claimed they'd murdered someone in the past when in fact all three were lying 35:49 to each other defense attorneys argued that 35:54 Kenji tasa and yoshimoto should not be punished with the death penalty because R's death was supposedly accidental they 36:02 also argued that historically speaking all single murder cases usually result in a life sentence and not the death 36:08 penalty now all three defendants disputed who was the primary asent and Mastermind behind the murder Kenji 36:14 insisted that sakasa was to blame and yoshitomo followed these allegations but sakasa blamed yoshitomo claiming that he 36:21 was the first to strike R there were clear differences in attitudes during these discussions although all three men 36:27 seemed unfaced and emotionless over their actions sassa often made fun of R throughout Court proceedings where Kenji 36:34 said that the victim was simply unlucky but on March 18th 2009 Judgment Day 36:39 finally arrived the district court found all three defendants guilty of all charges and as a result sukasa and Josh 36:46 Tomo were sentenced to death for their actions it was ruled that the motives for the crime left no room for leniency 36:52 and that capital punishment was the only option and Kenji was given a life sentence due to his early surrender 36:58 although R's mother and ex partner were both disappointed at kenji's life being spared it was widely recognized that a 37:04 death sentence for yoshitomo and sakasa was exceptionally strict when compared to similar 37:10 cases as expected all three men appealed to have their sentences reduced and while yosh's death sentence would be 37:16 reduced to a life sentence tasa accepted his fate and withdrew his appeal this resulted in both yoso and Kenji being 37:23 spared their lives however for sakata that would not be the same and on June 25th 2015 he was executed via hanging a 37:31 sad side note to the story but unknown to fiko at the time re had actually been saving more than half a monthly salary 37:37 to help buy her mother a new home at the time of her death she'd saved up more than 8 million yen which is the equivalent of $59,000 or £50,000 if it 37:46 wasn't for their forgetfulness her as salance may have even got their hands on all that money but thankfully they were 37:51 too stupid to remember four digits regretfully I see much familiarity between this case and the story of Eve 37:58 Carson both were bright young women with great Prosperity ahead of them and they were both caught up in their day-to-day 38:03 lives when bad luck and merciless tragedy struck they were targeted hunted 38:08 robbed and then murdered and for what exactly a few measly hundred dollars the 38:14 motive behind their deaths is quite bluntly almost entirely incomprehensible an entire life filled with friends 38:21 family Partners love hope friendship and prosperity was ended to temporarily fix 38:27 the financial burden of an irresponsible lowlife individual the Stark level of selfishness is entirely enraging and now 38:34 a mother has lost her one and only child an array of people have lost a good friend and a young woman has lost her 38:41 life to this day fam still gives lectures in various schools and places to talk about her daughter's story she 38:47 provides insights into keeping people safe on the streets and even raises awareness of dangerous online 38:56 Behavior while R's story definitely was tragic Satoshi Uematsu 39:01 enough this next one really does push that boundary even further General disclaimer but please forgive the audio 39:07 and the haircut but the story itself is absolutely wild Satoshi umsu was 39:13 responsible for 19 deaths and a further 26 injuries however it is more the 39:18 location of this tragedy that makes it so hard to stomach today's case is in Saga mahara a 39:27 located about 40 km away from Tokyo's Central business district once used as an area for 39:34 extensive training by the Imperial Japanese Army back in the 1930s the city is now better known as an area for 39:40 manufacturing and industrial production with an estimated population of 721 th000 people it's now the third 39:48 most popular city in the Kanagawa prefecture placed after Yokohama and 39:53 Kawasaki and one of the city's residents went by the name of Satoshi uatu Satoshi uatu was born on the 20th 40:01 of January 1990 nearby in Tokyo his father was an elementary school art teacher and his mother was a 40:09 cartoonist at the age of 1 the yatsu family moved from Tokyo to sagam mahara city where they settled into their 40:16 permanent home Satoshi attended a public elementary school before moving on to a 40:21 junior high school in the area at school he was known to be an Entertainer a charmer and someone who made other 40:26 people laugh he was enthusiastic about basketball and although his grades once excellent he 40:32 got by just fine but it was around this time in high school that Shadows of doubt first started to cast Over Satoshi 40:37 and his behavior on several occasions he was caught shoplifting with friends and he 40:44 was also found to be deliberately causing damage to property while drunk his most alarming altercation with 40:50 the law however was in 2007 when he allegedly pushed over and hit a disabled person for getting in his way at High 40:56 School despite his questionable actions Satoshi continued his education into private 41:03 university he entered the faculty of Education to major in primary education aiming to become an elementary school 41:10 teacher just like his father but around this time his parents 41:15 suddenly moved out of the omatsu residence to a condo in Tokyo leaving the house to Satoshi and although their 41:21 motive in moving was never clear it is speculated that many arguments broke out between Satoshi and his parents 41:27 eventually leading to a rift in the family the supposed breaking point to all of this was around satoshi's tattoo 41:34 which covered most of his back for those of you that aren't aware tattoos in Japan are another thing that 41:41 society looks down upon the stigma around tattoos dates back as far as 720 when they were used to Brand criminals 41:47 that have committed serious crimes and during the Edo period in the 1600s through to the late 1800s tattoos 41:55 were also adopted by Outlaws and gangs such as the Yakuza they were seen as symbols of 42:01 courage and loyalty thanks to their pain and permanence and while views on tattoos in 42:06 the modern day climate have relaxed marginally they are still to this day seen as dirty disrespectful to family 42:13 and shameful Satoshi finally graduated from University in the year 2012 and although 42:20 his plans slightly deviated into becoming a full-time tattooist and illegally grown cannabis he failed at 42:26 both around the middle of 2012 he completed formal qualifications towards social welfare aimed at qualifying him 42:32 to work in the psychiatric sector he passed and by the time desember came around he found himself a part-time job 42:39 working at the sukui yuren Care Facility also known as sukui Lil Garden in 42:44 English reportedly he was hired after telling interviewers that he thought people with disabilities were 42:50 cute Satoshi did well in his job and in April 2013 he was promoted to work 42:56 full-time at suku liily Garden eventually being well known as a bright and motivated worker with plenty of room 43:03 for growth but as the months went by satoshi's character began to change in 43:09 2014 and again in 2015 Satoshi was caught hitting facility residents 43:15 consequently he was interviewed by staff several times and vigilance over Satoshi in the 43:20 workplace escalated throughout the year of 2015 but on the 6th of February 2016 43:26 after after another altercation he resigned from working at suu liily Garden leaving himself 43:33 unemployed and while suu Lily Garden was glad to see Satoshi leave it wouldn't be the last time that they'd see 43:44 him we're moving over to Tokyo and the date is the 15th of February 43:49 2016 only 2 weeks since satoshi's resignation Satoshi had actually 43:56 traveled to Tokyo to hand deliver a Written Letter to the political figure tadori Oshima the Speaker of the House 44:02 of Representatives of Japan and this letter was the first big warning sign to satoshi's 44:08 behavior satoshi's Written Letter was a written request appealing for the legalization of ending the lives of 44:15 those with multiple disabilities he actually pleaded for disabled patients to be euthanized for 44:21 the good of the world and warned that he planned to carry out a murderous attack to boost the world economy and prevent 44:27 World War II after signing his name the letter proceeded to detail an offer to 44:32 Target Two facilities housing the disabled and he went on to appeal for certain conditions in exchange for 44:39 committing his act Satoshi actually offered to kill people himself he also added that staff 44:46 would be tied up to keep them from interfering but that they would not be harmed the ACT would be Swift and after 44:53 that he would turn himself in he ended the letter with now is the 44:58 time to carry out a revolution and make a tough decision for the sake of all mankind he then signed it with his name 45:06 underneath the letter was handed to Tokyo Police who then contacted sagam mahara police and only 4 days later on 45:12 febru the 19th Satoshi was arrested questioned and then involuntarily committed to a psychiatric 45:20 hospital satoshi's views of disabled people and the crimes he wanted to commit in order to supposedly boost the 45:26 world econ om was nothing short of profoundly immoral but with them enrolled into a psychiatric hospital 45:33 maybe there was now a possibility to unravel and deconstruct his perspective sukuri ly Garden facility 45:40 was alarmed to hear that their former employee had such fuse and so in an effort for protection 16 cameras were 45:47 installed across the facility immediately after but these cameras would only be 45:52 installed for routine monitoring rather than for surveillance and to so's time in Rehabilitation would be very 45:58 shortlived too because only 2 weeks later on March the 2nd he was released by doctors deemed as no threat to 46:05 society and that assumption would be a grave [Music] 46:16 mistake on the 25th of July 2016 Satoshi traveled to Tokyo by bus to pick up his 46:22 car from the family residence he then collected various knives and afterward he traveled to a 46:29 home improvement store where he purchased a hammer and a binding band Satoshi then traveled to Shinjuku 46:35 where he rented a room and dyed as hair golden before meeting a woman at a barbecue restaurant for 46:41 dinner there he told her about his letter and his plans but tragically she 46:46 didn't expect he was actually being real and ignored it fast forward 4 hours to the morning 46:53 of the 26th of July 2016 at roughly 1:37 a.m. unmonitored cameras 47:00 at the Suki liy Garden Care Facility recorded a black Honda pulling up to a back road the car belonged to Satoshi uratsu 47:08 who emerged from the driver's seat shortly after parking his car he walked to the car's boot before 47:15 pulling out a duffel bag full of knives he then approached a window located at the southeast wing of the facility and 47:21 gained entry by breaking it with a hammer being a former member Satoshi knew the area was well gaining entry 47:28 from the back allowed him to remain almost entirely unnoticed and no one heard him break the window 47:34 either at 2:10 a.m. he made it inside found the closest staff member and tied 47:40 them up and gagged them he took their keys and now with full access to the facility he was able to go wherever he 47:46 wanted to and if his previous letter wasn't obvious enough there was only one 47:52 reason why he was here Satoshi made his way from the south northeast corner of the facility right 47:58 through to its West End going from room to room one by one tragically using his 48:04 knives to murder every disabled person he could find a lot of them were fast asleep in 48:10 their beds and when that wasn't enough he then made his way to the second floor with 48:17 over 3 years of experience at the facility he likely knew the exact process that security officers would 48:22 follow on a usual night and so he was able to strategically avoid both them and the security 48:29 office with over half of the facility's footprint now covered Satoshi fledged the area through a side door located 48:35 next to the main entrance before looping around the main building and back to his car he was seen Again by surveillance 48:43 cameras at 2:50 a.m. only 40 minutes after his invasion he then got back into his car 48:49 and when he was behind the driver's seat posted a picture of himself to Twitter saying May there be World Peace 48:55 beautiful Japan and with his sick fantasy now complete Satoshi fled the 49:02 [Music] 49:10 area only 10 minutes after fleeing armed police stormed suur liily Garden a 49:15 worker had actually spotted a man with blonde hair wielding a blade walking around the facility's 49:21 grounds and when they arrived there they would discover a harrowing scene 29 49:26 ambulances were sent to the facility and all of them would be desperately 49:31 needed Satoshi wouldn't try to avoid being caught either in fact less than 2 49:37 hours after posting to Twitter he handed himself in to his local police station along with his bag full of 49:44 knives and in the morning police would find his car too blood was found on the 49:49 steering wheel with Blood Stained towels and plastic bags found on the passenger's seat a partially eaten piece 49:56 of bread and 1,000 yen bills were scattered all over when police questioned him on the 50:02 letter he said yes that was me before requesting a new identity and plastic surgery after only serving 2 years in 50:09 prison this didn't work and Satoshi Matsu was immediately arrested on the 50:16 spot back at sukui ly Garden the devastation would continue to 50:22 unfold families of the patients rushed to find out if their relatives were dead 50:28 and even those that learned their relatives were alive would have to wait days to find out how bad the relatives 50:33 injuries were or even if they would make it a total of 19 patients at the 50:40 facility were sadly killed most of their bodies discovered in their beds and a 50:45 further 26 patients were found to be injured 13 of them 50:51 severely at the time of the attack Satoshi yatsu was declared as the perpet trator of Japan's worst post-war Mass 50:58 killing now called to be the sagam mahara massacre and later the next day Satoshi 51:05 was transferred from the police station where he handed himself in to a high security prosecution's 51:10 office police tried to use a tinted van to conceal his identity but as he was 51:16 escorted away he smiled at all the cameras around him police would also raid his family 51:22 home too located only a few minutes away from the Care Facility 51:27 there they recovered journals and electronic equipment and rumors around satoshi's letter to the government would 51:32 soon start to spread but neighbors did Express surprise that apparently Satoshi had 51:38 committed these murders he was described for them as friendly outgoing and a good man and although some of them did admit 51:45 that he had changed over the years no one ever expected him to cause any harm 51:50 it was in this moment that a second investigation would begin looking into the actions and vigilance of police and 51:56 psychologists who were aware of satoshi's views and questions started to circulate 52:03 around the 16 cameras that were installed in the facility just weeks before the 52:08 attack although they were on and working therefore recording the entire incident 52:13 no one was actually contracted to operate or view these cameras both police and the facility failed to react 52:20 to the warning signs to add to the frustration briefings for the families would only 52:25 begin an entire 10 days after the attack with information to the health and well-being of the victims being kept in 52:32 the dark and the murders of 19 residents at s garden instantly became international 52:39 news in a country that's commonly perceived with very low crime rates this was a complete shock to 52:46 many but one aspect that contrasted greatly between Japan and other countries is that many countries were 52:52 declaring this to be a hate crime Japan on the other hand and with its stigma towards disabled people failed to report 52:59 it that way in fact not a single Japanese public official ever sought to officially use these words and to add to 53:07 this case's disappointment the victims of the sagam mahara massacre were never officially named either this wasn't out 53:13 of respect but instead was because the majority of the families didn't want the public to know that their loved ones had 53:19 disabilities and on the surface while this move can be seen as a way of protecting their privacy it could also 53:25 be a way of keeping people dis I abilities out of the Public's eye we're moving forward to satoshi's 53:32 prosecution on the 20th of February 2017 7 months after the attack Satoshi was 53:38 officially found mentally competent to stand trial this paved the way for more severe 53:44 charges if found guilty and with Japan accepting the death penalty on severe cases emotions around satoshi's fate 53:51 were high his defense team said that they were planning to argue that he was mentally in competent at the time of the 53:57 crime due to the effects of marijuana and almost 3 years later on 54:03 the 8th of January 20120 Satoshi would face trial he pleaded not guilty to the 54:09 stabbings however over 2,000 people lined up outside the courtroom to try and get one 54:15 of the 26 viewing seats in the public gallery while media broadcasted from 54:20 outside during trial at no point did Satoshi show any remorse for his actions 54:25 to the victims he did however admit that he was sorry to the families before proceeding to 54:31 bite a part of his own finger off as an act of apology the stunt failed to mean anything though as he continued to 54:37 insist that there was no point in disabled people living after an agonizing long trial the 54:43 verdict was finally made Satoshi was formally found guilty with 19 counts of murder 2 24 counts of 54:51 attempted murder 2 counts of illegal confinement causing injury three counts of illegal confinement one count of 54:58 unlawful entry and one count of violating the swords and Firearms control law the prosecution then announced that 55:05 they were seeking the death penalty calling his Rampage inhumane that left no room for 55:11 leniency and on the 16th of March 2020 Satoshi was officially given his sentence to death by the ukama district 55:23 court to the date of this video being recorded sat OSU Matsu is still alive and in prison he awaits to be executed 55:30 from a high security prison cell when that day will come however nobody quite knows with the effects of the pandemic 55:36 delaying the process several times and while I wish I could go into remembrance for the 19 victims of suur Lily Garden 55:43 sadly I can't because they have no names and no faces take this as a personal 55:49 feeling but denying their names and faces is like denying them their Humanity following other tragic stories 55:56 from from around the world we remember the victims what they were like and what to find them and through that their 56:03 remembrance puts a heavy emptiness to a place that was taken by a killer brushing who the victims are away 56:10 strips them of their worth and in turn suppresses the attention that's given towards a 56:15 case there were no charities on news articles no hashtags on Twitter No 56:21 campaigns on GoFundMe and the story itself quietened down all too quick 56:27 quickly and while the will of the victim's family members should be respected the stigma and shame around 56:33 disabled people in Japan should not be ignored it's a bias that tragically 56:39 played a heavy part to this case following satoshi's crime both 56:45 Japan and the rest of the world have become more aware of their perceptions towards people with disabilities but 56:51 whether Japan will learn from this and from its disturbing past is still yet to be seen 56:56 with the par Olympics Games currently set to be performed in Tokyo later this year opportunities to normalize and 57:02 improve on perceptions over disabilities are a plenty so let's see where they go from 57:08 here and back in sagam mahara families and friends still pay tribute to the 57:14 victims they lay flowers once a month outside the facility which was demolished and rebuilt in 57:21 2016 and although some of the victims names and faces have finally been revealed most are still kept in the 57:28 dark hopefully one day this type of stigma and discrimination against disabled people will finally cease to 57:34 exist and maybe even the case of Satoshi Matsu will become a vital lesson that was learned along the 57:41 way while most of Japan's dark stories are quite understandably written by Japanese residents our next one comes Rina Shimabukuro 57:48 from the deplorable actions of an American Marine in fact this case caused quite the stir between American and 57:54 Japanese authorities so without any further Ado Let's Travel south of Japan's main land to the island of 58:01 okanawa now I've always said that Japan as a country is extremely diverse when it comes to climate and perhaps not many 58:08 of you know this but northern Japan actually has the highest snowfall per year when compared to any other country 58:14 today's video looks at the Stark opposite of this as okanawa is Japan's version of Tropical Paradise it's a 58:20 popular destination for Japanese natives looking to catch some sun waves and warmth and San Andy beaches and a 58:26 laid-back atmosphere to the island is what makes akawa special okanawa is classed as its own prefecture but has a 58:33 relatively small population it's also a destination that has a heavy Western influence from its Beach culture to its 58:39 local Delicacies and strangely spam is a very common food to be found in aonan Cuisine even in sushi there's great 58:46 reason for Western influence in okanawa as 25% of the island is actually covered by military bases from the United States 58:53 it's no secret that the local people of akawa are une easyy with this Arrangement as 60% of their small 460 59:00 met island is consumed by its military presence this has been a point of contention between the US and Japan 59:05 since World War II but otherwise akawa is a laid-back island with a vibrant culture and wonderful people and it's 59:12 here on this island in Ura City that we find 20-year-old Rea shuko Reena lived 59:17 in a small two-bedroom apartment she was a hardworking employee in a corporate office which at her age was rather 59:23 admirable for the most part she was independent and she was a very self-driven young woman she was admired 59:29 in the workplace and by those around her for a positive yet sensible attitude towards life Reena grew up as an only 59:35 child mostly keeping to herself but liked by those around her for a polite personality she was also known to break 59:41 out some impressive dancing and singing skills when around those she was most comfortable with while growing up Reena 59:47 always desired to have siblings to share her passions with and so as she became older one of reena's main Ambitions was 59:54 to have children telling her friends that she was aiming to have around six of them and this opportunity may have 1:00:00 come sooner than expected as in 2015 Reena began a relationship with a local akan man due to the nature of Japanese 1:00:07 media and identity protection we don't know the name of this man so for the sake of this story we will call him 1:00:13 Hinata what we do know about Tata is he was an attentive and respectful partner and he treated Reena well we know this 1:00:20 as reena's new boyfriend quickly gained her parents approval something which often makes or breaks a relationship in 1:00:25 Japan things were going so well between the two that eventually they moved in together getting an apartment in Irma 1:00:31 City and settling into their everyday lives they slipped into a routine Reena and Tata would work on the weekdays to 1:00:37 cherish their moments together on the weekends in the following months the couple described their relationship as 1:00:42 happy and content and this routine would carry them for several months more until all of a sudden tragedy would Blindside 1:00:49 their peace in April of 1:00:54 2016 on a mild spring evening Reena decided to head out for a walk it had 1:00:59 been a long day sitting in the office and so she figured she would go out to stretch her legs at around 8:00 p.m. 1:01:05 that evening just before dusk she slipped into her red sneakers and a black Parker before shutting the door behind her Reena kept in regular contact 1:01:12 with her boyfriend through the messaging app line which is the most popular way to talk by text in Japan much akin to 1:01:18 Whatsapp in the west she messaged her boyfriend to say that she was going out for a walk and would be back late onun 1:01:24 in the evening which was nothing out of the ordin or ar taking her usual route along the edge of a canal she took in 1:01:29 the evening's calming sights Reflections in the water displaying illuminations of apartment buildings commercial stores 1:01:35 restaurants and even a mega donkey oat on the other side of this canal was an industrial sector full of factories 1:01:41 warehouses and shipping companies all of which were busily working their way into the night Reena had walked here many 1:01:47 times after work she felt safe here and rightfully so and this very night Hinata 1:01:53 was waiting back at home for her to return but as the hours passed by and the clock hit midnight the incessant 1:01:59 feeling of worry began to haunt the young man's mind Reena did like her own space so at 2: a.m. he sent her a single 1:02:05 text message to say he was signing off for the night which after a few minutes was marked as red surely this meant she 1:02:11 was okay maybe she had bumped into a friend and wanted some time to catch up after all in Japan it's very common for 1:02:18 couples to keep their feelings to themselves and so Hinata went to bed expecting to see or hear from reeno in 1:02:24 the morning maybe then they could catch up and talk about where she had been over the evening but as the morning arrived there 1:02:31 was still no sign of Reena anywhere she hadn't returned home or replied to his message despite this message being 1:02:37 marked as red this didn't sit right with Hinata and so on the morning of April 1:02:43 the 29th he contacted local police to report his girlfriend Rea shimabukuro as 1:02:49 missing police were rather quick to arrive at the residence and while there they began their investigations asking 1:02:54 reena's boyfriend as much much information as they could in parallel to this reena's group of friends immediately took to social media asking 1:03:01 around for their missing friend and soon enough speculation started to spread like wildfire around the tight-knit 1:03:06 community As Time clamored by multiple theories arose some believed it was a random abduction some believed the 1:03:13 boyfriend had something to do with it While others speculated cult activity and as all this heresy plagued reena's 1:03:19 disappearance the police released multiple images to the public in hopes that someone would come forward with a lead however as these first few days 1:03:26 passed by without any notion or clue concern and Dread began to fill the hearts and minds of reena's family 1:03:31 friends and boyfriend during public campaigning police were still working hard behind the scenes eventually they 1:03:38 discovered where reena's cell phone had last pinged in the moment she read her boyfriend's final text message for the night which just so happened to be in 1:03:44 the early morning hours of 2: a.m. it turns out that a cell phone had pinged one final time while inside the 1:03:50 industrial estate located next to the canal this was a critical piece of information for officers 1:03:56 as now they could question those working around the site and start to scour the area for any clues or evidence it was 1:04:02 through these efforts that they spotted something peculiar on a surveillance camera which happened to be owned by one of the industrial companies on the very 1:04:09 same night Reena disappeared a red SUV seemed to be acting rather strangely and upon further investigation they 1:04:16 discovered that the SUV belonged to a US military serviceman stationed in okwa and more specifically at the cadina 1:04:23 airbase the car was owned by man named Kenneth Shinzo and he was a 32-year-old US Marine stationed on the island back 1:04:30 at home Kenneth was born and raised in New York by a single mother Shirley Gadson and although Shirley did her best 1:04:36 to raise him she was ultimately equipped to care for the young boy Kenneth was a problem child while growing up he was 1:04:42 disruptive at school had regular temper tantrums and often fought against his mother in fact this Behavior got so bad 1:04:50 that Charley ended up taking Kenneth to therapy paperwork from the Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center described 1:04:55 shley as cognitively limited and declared that the two had a tangled and unmeshed relationship which made his treatment extremely difficult ultimately 1:05:03 Kenneth was put into foster care in 1997 at the young age of 11 and from here he went through a total of five Foster 1:05:09 families due to his behavior at the age of 18 Kenneth moved into his own place near his mother's home until eventually 1:05:15 he joined the Marines he served in the Marines for seven begrudging years before taking a back seat in 2014 by 1:05:22 accepting support work for the Marines in Japan instead of moving back to the US yes and the reason for this was very 1:05:28 understandable meeting and falling in love with a Japanese woman the two eventually married and Kenneth had even 1:05:33 taken her last name to distance himself from his own mother the two would also have a newborn son in March of 1:05:39 2016 and although his wife had urged him to tell his mother this never actually occurred which brings us to May of 2016 1:05:47 only 2 months since the birth of his own son this was when Kenneth's car was spotted on cameras around the same area 1:05:53 and time where Reena disappeared so so why was he here did he have anything to do with it and what was the reasoning 1:06:00 for a suspicious Behavior Kenneth immediately peaked their curiosity but when he came in for 1:06:06 questioning on May the 16th he denied any involvement and he answered all questions to an acceptable standard 1:06:12 however they did seize Kenneth's car and an efforts to conduct their own Fric analysis but the results for this would take several days to come back and so 1:06:19 with that said Kenneth was released from police custody as there was no evidence to suggest he was involved in reena's 1:06:25 disappearance you'd expect that under normal circumstances he would return home to his family but that is not what Kenneth 1:06:31 had in mind instead he made his way to a local drugstore purchased an extortionate amount of sleeping pills 1:06:37 and purchased a 2 L bottle of whiskey and you can probably guess what his plans were the next morning Kenneth 1:06:43 attempted to take his own life but after ultimately failing he was admitted to his local hospital unfortunately it gets 1:06:50 worse as the very next day after being released he was once again rushed to the hospital after Downing two more bottles 1:06:56 of whiskey in one evening this behavior is reactionary to a situation whether it was from guilt or fear Kenneth wanted 1:07:03 out of whatever scenario he was slowly falling into and this was by any means necessary just one day after Kenneth's 1:07:09 second overdose on alcohol results from the tests conducted on his vehicle had finally come back DNA found inside his 1:07:16 car had been compared to DNA found in reena's home and unfortunate for him the tests were conclusive a match was found 1:07:23 this at least confirms to investigators is that Runa shimabukuro had at some point been inside Kenneth's vehicle and 1:07:29 most likely on the very night she had disappeared this undeniable proof seemed to overburden him because as soon as 1:07:35 interrogations began Kenneth finally buckled he admitted his part in reena's disappearance and even worse he told 1:07:43 officers where they could find her leading investigators to a small and 1:07:48 sad wooded area in onor Village officers came to a black suitcase like a meaningless object it had been thrown 1:07:55 off the of a road discarded into the Woodland underbrush and inside lay the decaying body of a young woman being 1:08:02 here for more than 20 days in the Searing okona and heat she was unrecognizable and partially 1:08:08 skeletonized DNA testing later confirmed her identity and tragically it was the 1:08:13 body of rearo the community at large were devastated as we can all imagine they 1:08:19 had hoped to find Reena alive and well but sadly these hopes were now crushed 1:08:26 with the discovery of reena's body Kenneth felt no reason to withhold information from authorities for any longer and instead he gave his version 1:08:33 of the events which unfolded on the 28th of April 2016 it was on this evening when Kenneth 1:08:39 was driving around UTA that he spotted a small 5ft frame walking alone in the Dusky hours you see Kenneth claims that 1:08:46 he'd always fantasized about dark things even as early as childhood rather disgustingly he fantasized about forcing 1:08:52 himself onto women murdering them and even taking his own life and to take things one step further he also 1:08:59 fantasized about killing his mother and even causing Mass tragedy in fact his reasoning for joining the military was 1:09:05 out of the expectation that he could kill other people abducting and restraining women before carrying out 1:09:11 his desires was a long-running fantasy of his and on the night that he saw Reena the situation was perfect she was 1:09:17 small alone in a quiet area and had the means of kidnap at his disposal almost 1:09:23 as if it was planned or in Kenneth's arm [Music] fate Kenneth pulled up on the nearby 1:09:30 Road and pursued the woman on foot before coming up behind her and striking her over the head with a metal rod 1:09:35 Kenneth grabbed her dragged her to a nearby area and then assaulted her but Reena was not fully unconscious she 1:09:42 began to resist Kenneth fight back and even call for help this was when Kenneth pulled his arm back and began to 1:09:48 physically fight the defenseless woman and after pulling out his knife he stabbed her multiple times until 1:09:53 eventually Reena was no more Kenneth retreated to his car pulled out a black suitcase loaded his victim 1:10:00 inside the suitcase placed it into the back of his SUV and drove off into the night and after driving 20 km or 12 mil 1:10:07 from aota Village he stopped on the side of a quiet Road throwing the suitcase as far as he could into the underbrush this 1:10:14 is where Reena would stay for 22 long days acting as if nothing had happened 1:10:19 Kenneth then retreated back to his car and drove back home to his wife and newly born son in the following days 1:10:25 Kenneth was waiting for expectation for police to come knocking at his door but as the days and then weeks passed his 1:10:30 confidence grew he resumed his normal life starting to believe that he may have gotten away with his crime however 1:10:37 as we all know this was not the case and soon after he was to face the full force of the 1:10:43 law reena's murder brought a lot of attention towards US military presence on the island and as the years go by 1:10:49 there's a notably growing amount of crimes that have been committed by us Personnel this contention began in 1995 1:10:56 when three US Marines kidnapped and sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl and since then okanawa has debated 1:11:02 hosting the US military the murder of Rea shuko wasn't only a fresh reminder to this notion it was a very strong one 1:11:08 at that and Kenneth's actions actually brought thousands of residents out to the streets and 1:11:21 [Music] protest 1:11:28 this is not how we want the country to be we are your friends your 1:11:33 neighbors but we want Bas to be gone 1:11:38 before court Kenneth insisted he did not intend to kill Reena and apparently his only aim was assault throughout his 1:11:45 trial Kenneth was reserved quiet and often staring into space both judge and jury did not buy a story and instead 1:11:51 they determined that all of it was premeditated it was noted that that Kenneth had bought his own murder kit out with him late at night including a 1:11:58 Batton an empty suitcase and a knife and if his aim was only to assault then why were these items in his car his actions 1:12:05 on this night did not reflect those of someone who did not have intention to kill while being charged with murder 1:12:11 sexual assaults and illegal disposal of a body Kenneth would plead guilty to sexual assaults resulting in death and 1:12:17 abandoning a body but denied his charge of murder and with reena's parents calling for the death penalty Kenneth 1:12:23 had every reason to worry for fortunate for him but this sentence would never come his way and instead judge tohair 1:12:29 shabata would give him life in prison stating there was no room for leniency in such a violent and unnecessary crime 1:12:35 nobody can deny that Kenneth's actions that night were selfish and Despicable and his evil actions cannot be defended 1:12:42 perhaps his resentment towards women can be spurred from an internal hate towards his mother then again his wife never 1:12:48 complained of any ill Behavior towards her and neighbors always said that the couple were kind and happy so what made 1:12:54 Reena from any other woman in his life and what led him to choose her on that lonely fateful night unfortunately we 1:13:01 will never quite know Reena was a young woman who had just entered a true adulthood she was planning her future 1:13:08 her marriage and her family she was kind patient and loving towards those around her and especially towards her boyfriend 1:13:14 who misses her dearly Reena was positive sensible polite and nurturing 1:13:20 characteristics which you could argue are the total opposite to a killer and tragically her dreams were Stripped Away 1:13:26 from Her by a disturbed stranger she wasn't given a chance all by the actions of one 1:13:32 individual our next case takes us to Kawasaki and is the perfect example of the butterfly effect for all of the Ryuichi Iwasaki 1:13:38 wrong reasons now I think we're all aware that actions can cause reactions and while some of them may be 1:13:44 intentional the reality is that most are actually without any intent whatsoever so when one man decided to go on a 1:13:51 murderous spree he was surprised to learn that his actions caused another murder only a few days later Japan tends 1:13:57 to be well associated with futuristic and modern inventions such as robots bullet trains video games and of course 1:14:04 anime and manga and in fact if you walk around the streets of Tokyo you'd be hard done by not to spot some kind of 1:14:10 anime your manga character or even just a cute little mascot within your view from the train networks hosting them all 1:14:16 over their carriages to convenience stores and even airports having their own mascots and media sponsors the 1:14:22 nation of Japan is engrossed in fiction characters and their own little worlds anime and manga in particular have made 1:14:29 the mark across the world all over gripping the interests of people both young and old however and this tends to 1:14:36 be one of my most favorite sayings but everything in moderation right people can sometimes get a little too engrossed 1:14:42 in fiction some even neglecting their real lives in favor of the imaginary world and those that do this can 1:14:48 simultaneously try to escape existence in society of course you have probably guessed what I'm talking about here and 1:14:54 that is the world of hikori but what are hikori exactly and why is being one seen 1:14:59 as such a Negative label in Japanese Society simply put Hikari categorized as 1:15:04 so-called shuttin people who rarely leave the house and despise interacting with others in the western world you 1:15:10 could probably call them Hermits extreme introverts or agoraphobe fear of going outside and 1:15:17 being in public spaces hikori can also be seen as a neat that's n which stands 1:15:23 for not an education employment or training so basically that's someone who doesn't contribute to society in any 1:15:30 distinct or useful way these social shut-ins are often looked at negatively by wider Society especially in a country 1:15:35 like Japan where there is a strong sense of Honor that comes from working and supporting yourself your family and The 1:15:41 Wider economy and amongst these recluses of society in the city of Kawasaki just 1:15:47 south of Tokyo we find 51-year-old riichi iwasaki riii was born in December 1:15:53 1967 and despite his parents being together at the time of his birth this wouldn't last for long they divorced 1:15:59 when he was only 4 years old and as a result he went to go and live solely with his father rarely seeing his mother 1:16:05 however this situation would not be stable either and rii would eventually move in with his extended family in a 1:16:11 crowded house consisting of his grandparents Aunt uncle and cousins during his childhood he was enrolled in 1:16:18 katas elementary school before graduating to Junior High and eventually progressed to a vocational training 1:16:23 school where he studied engineering riii led a relatively normal life though he did struggle to maintain friendships 1:16:30 during his school years he was otherwise stressfree and following his graduation he worked in several basic jobs mainly 1:16:37 factory work and as a night guard for a local store but throughout the years and while his cousins moved out and got on 1:16:43 with their own lives RT he continued to live in the family home his grandparents sadly passed away in 1990 thus leaving 1:16:50 him with just his aunt and his uncle as ruichi moved into his 40s he found himself spending more and more time at 1:16:56 home alone which as you can imagine May sometimes result in depression but the lack of comfort didn't end their sadly 1:17:03 he had also recently lost his job and with no rent or mortgage to pay he made no effort to find Reemployment although 1:17:10 RT's aunt and uncle were often out of the house doing their own things such as working their own Hobbies they still did 1:17:15 their best to look after him I mean they practically babysat him his meals were cooked his clothes were washed and the 1:17:22 bills were always paid however despite this he always did his best to avoid going outside as the years passed by so 1:17:29 did their birthdays the couple were slowly growing old and with all of the love and support they gave their nephew 1:17:35 they hoped that one day he would return the favor however as they would eventually find out riii was becoming 1:17:42 very selfish in his 40s and by the year 2010 he'd abandoned all efforts of becoming a functioning member of society 1:17:49 instead he spent every waking moment in his own room playing video games and watching manga while trying to avoid any 1:17:55 contact to the outside world and sadly this included his own family despite 1:18:00 their nephew's presence the Aging couple was so desperate for care that they eventually asked the local welfare 1:18:06 center for Home Care visits however due to rchy living at the property they were instead advised to speak to him for help 1:18:13 soon after this they asked him to do his own housework and in the month of January 2019 they left a note outside of 1:18:19 his bedroom door the note explaining their dilemma and begging him for his help however ruii didn't take the 1:18:26 message very well instead he confronted them saying I do my own meals laundry and other things myself what do you mean 1:18:32 I'm withdrawn the now 51-year-old riii had to become entirely comfortable in his unemployed and secluded life and 1:18:39 having been in this situation for decades now he had gained a strong sense of entitlement to his easy lifestyle 1:18:45 neighbors would also complain about his behavior one notable instance occurred in the summer of 2018 when the 1:18:51 neighbor's tree branch was slightly hanging over the adjoining fence after realizing this riichi furiously knocked 1:18:57 on their door insulting them and commenting an hourong argument by now it was obvious that he had become semi- 1:19:03 feral and furious with the world he despised his uncle and Aunt for making him feel useless even though deep down 1:19:10 he knew that he actually was the man no longer fit in with Society however very 1:19:15 little did anyone know that this sentiment would manifest itself in one of the most terrible of 1:19:22 ways May the 28th 2019 at roughly 7:00 a.m. that morning riii did something 1:19:29 entirely out of the ordinary he got up early and left the house for the first time in several weeks stranger still he 1:19:35 wished his neighbors a good day on the way out meanwhile a short train rideway things were typical for a morning at 1:19:41 noborito station commuters were busily making their way to work while local children were heading off to school it 1:19:47 is not unusual for even young children to travel to school alone alongside Norway and Switzerland it has one of the 1:19:53 lowest crime rates per capita and I know what some of you are going to say yes that's at least what they record at 7:44 1:20:00 a.m. on this day a crowd of people mainly children were waiting for their shuttle buses to arrive one of which was 1:20:06 a bus to K's Elementary School the very same school that rii had studied many years previously speaking of riii it was 1:20:14 in this moment that he arrived however he was not there to get in line for a bus brandishing a knife from his jacket 1:20:21 rii began his attack at the back of the waiting line and after attack in a male adult he ran towards the crowd of 1:20:27 children and parents he proceeded by lacerating a mother before cruy turning the knife on the youngest of the bunch 1:20:33 and as a bus unexpectedly pulled up to the commotion its driver looked on in shock and horror unable to comprehend 1:20:39 what he was witnessing but ri's spree ended almost as soon as it began because as the crowd frantically dispersed riii 1:20:46 walked 10 m before then turning the knife on himself an action that ended in him taking his own life just a mere 10 1:20:53 seconds later the the whole ordeal was over and riii collapsed to the floor within half a minute RT had caused 1:21:01 a severe amount of physical damage to a total of 19 people this included two adults and 17 children by the time 1:21:08 Emergency Services arrived two of those had sadly passed away this including a 39-year-old man and a sixth grade 1:21:15 student due to the large number of victims a total of 11 ambulances were called to the scene where four people 1:21:21 were considered to be in critical condition this including riii now thankfully all three of those innocent 1:21:27 victims would recover from their injuries whereas riii himself would pass away from his own self-inflicted stab 1:21:34 wounds after searching around the crime scene officers found four knives on his body this including two fishing knives 1:21:40 and two knives in his backpack one of which being more than 25 cm long a second backpack containing a Sashimi 1:21:47 knife was found at a local convenience store therefore indicating that duii plan to return and cause further 1:21:52 bloodsheds it was further learned that most of these knives were purchased several months prior therefore 1:21:58 suggesting that he'd planned these attacks for quite some time however despite all of the evidence available we 1:22:04 will likely never know the real motive behind ri's actions we can only assume that the man was so depressed and 1:22:10 helpless that he came to the conclusion that he no longer wanted to exist and with so much angst and hate towards the 1:22:17 world he planned to depart it with the most inflicted Devastation possible it is often noted that people commit these 1:22:23 Mass public atrocities ities do not intend to come out of it alive Japan has unfortunately seen a number of these 1:22:29 mass killings in recent years some of you will remember that I've covered a few already including the Kyoto anime 1:22:35 Massacre these people feel that they have nothing left to lose yet all the same Harbor such a high degree of hate 1:22:41 towards the world that they feel the need to punish all of those around them take Elliot Roger for example the young 1:22:48 man knew that he wanted to end his own life he never questioned his depression or his own faults instead he blamed the 1:22:55 so-called stupidity of women and trat boys and in the end his Target was none other than a sorority house similarly 1:23:02 Eliot was a recluse set against the world isolated from society isolation can simulate a severely negative toll on 1:23:09 one's mental health and it's obvious that this sort of problem extends past American borders and into other 1:23:14 societies such as Japan the post-incident response to this case is extremely telling of that hikikomori are 1:23:21 so prevalent in Japan that they even have their own website communities and events and After ri's Crime the head of 1:23:28 hikamaru ux conference released a statement to say that this crime should not be linked to the lifestyle and that 1:23:34 they should not all be thought of as potential criminals however this would not stop the Japanese media from 1:23:39 sensationalizing the situation as such so much so that those living with current shut-ins began to feel fear that 1:23:46 their reclusive friends and loved ones would be the next to commit such heinous crimes in the days and weeks after his 1:23:53 actions the whole country was was in shock and the face of Ru Chi wasaki spread quickly throughout the media 1:23:58 alongside the newly tainted reputation of those within the hikori community and one person to hear the news was 1:24:05 76-year-old hiaki kumazawa who just so happened to be the former Vice Minister for agriculture forestry and Fisheries 1:24:12 the details about the news reminded him of his own son who was 44-year-old iiro unfortunately he had recently moved back 1:24:19 in with his parents due to his repeated failure in finding a job while growing up icho was considered to be gifted in 1:24:26 elementary school he was placed in private education by his resoundingly successful father but after moving into 1:24:32 junior high his grades would suddenly begin to disappoint most notably he 1:24:37 didn't quite meet his mother's expectations who unfortunately was particularly strict with her son 1:24:43 throughout his childhood if he didn't achieve the grades that she desired she would take away his toys and belongings 1:24:49 even sometimes destroying them right in front of his eyes now this animosity at home was reflected in nro's behavior in 1:24:56 school according to previous classmates he was that obsessive weird kid who always spoke to himself apparently he 1:25:03 was very much the type of person to hyper fix8 on things and was very obsessed with video games and Anime 1:25:08 often losing himself in those fictional worlds rather than pay attention in class he would instead draw the 1:25:14 characters he was obsessing over and back at home he would lock himself in his room and play video games all night 1:25:20 this continued into his adulthood when he then grew a Strong Addiction into the video game Dragon Quest 10 it became 1:25:26 obvious by now that this was Rao's preferred method of communication connecting with other people through a 1:25:32 keyboard and mouse rather than through real life this sort of behavior caused significant animosity among the family 1:25:39 but although iero's mother could easily take control of a son as a child he was now getting older and therefore stronger 1:25:45 in both physical strength and strength of mind and after a second year of Junior High e Cho began to intimidate 1:25:52 and sometimes even hit her when she upset him which as you can imagine caused much grief within the family 1:25:58 unknown to them at the time but I churu was actually displaying all the telltale signs of autism however developmental 1:26:04 disorders are a somewhat controversial Topic in Japan and he would only be diagnosed several decades too late this 1:26:11 delayed diagnosis also explained his social issues and his tendency to hyperfixate on specific things these 1:26:17 Tendencies would also transition into his adult life IU didn't want to follow the path of his father no M how much his 1:26:24 mother tried to push him towards it instead IO followed his heart and passion and wanted to get a job in the 1:26:30 anime and manga industry his parents would continue to push him to go to a standard college but after failing his 1:26:36 entrance exams he instead enrolled at Yogi animation Academy graduating with a 1:26:41 degree in computer Graphics a few years later he was thrust into the world of working where he would sadly ultimately 1:26:47 fail again unable to secure a new job his father used his connections to find work at a hospital and although this 1:26:54 would allow him to move out of the family home the apartment he ended up living in was still owned by his mother 1:27:00 so if it's not abundantly clear by now airo unfortunately did not have the mental means to support himself and in 1:27:07 his adult life he became increasingly reclusive as the years passed by he would continue to sit indoors watch 1:27:13 anime play video games and spend way too much time online in fact found on his Twitter account he even boasted that he 1:27:20 logged into Dragon Quest online every day since it was released which by that time was almost 7 years ago as a result 1:27:27 of his reclusive behavior and mental challenges he eventually lost his job of 1:27:33 course in Japan's Society bringing shame and disappointment to his family without a job rro could no longer afford to live 1:27:39 alone and so in May of 2019 and at the age of 44 he moved back in with his 1:27:44 parents his behavior plummeted almost instantly and it's reported that he became depressed was embarrassed with 1:27:51 his life and even lashed out at his family and naturally both his mother and his father were rather nervous about his 1:27:57 violent outbursts add disappointment to the mix and it's quite obvious why they didn't really appreciate his 1:28:05 company hikam Mori had a bad enough reputation by now and unfortunately airu 1:28:11 was beginning to fit that label perfectly and then only one week after moving back in with his parents the 1:28:17 Kawasaki stabbings occurred talk of hamori flooded Japan's headlines and one of those to hear of the news of of 1:28:24 course was IU's father hiaki kumazawa it was at that moment that hiaki made a 1:28:29 terribly flawed connection the old man was beginning to see his son in ruii iaki in his eyes someone just like his 1:28:36 own boy had just committed terrible atrocities all supposedly due to his anger and a lack of social interaction 1:28:44 both rii and yido they were both hikami and both capable of violence airu 1:28:50 himself had proven that he was capable of causing harm to other people and haki's worry and fear for his own safety 1:28:57 would come to a peak on June the 1st 2019 it was another average day in the kazawa household haki's wife was out 1:29:04 working while ichu was in his room playing Dragon Quest online meanwhile adjacent to their home the local school 1:29:11 was busy hosting an Athletics event with cheering heard throughout the entire neighborhood the cheering seemed to 1:29:16 bother airo however and with his growing irritation his anger once again manifested itself he began to shout at 1:29:23 his father starting yet another argument between the two and during this argument aeru told his father that he wanted to 1:29:30 kill him as you can imagine this was a huge red flag for hiaki as just 3 days prior 19 people had been severely 1:29:37 injured by riii iaki and now here was his son threatening him with his own life with the fearful imagery still 1:29:44 branded fresh into his mind hideaki made a snap decision during his son's Outburst the old man was going to make 1:29:51 sure that his son would never become a mass murderer like PR witchy and with IU's anger still erupting hiaki made his 1:29:57 way to the kitchen grabbed a knife and then began to savagely attack his own son tragically stabbing him repeatedly 1:30:04 in the neck and chest it wasn't until 30 stab wounds later that hideaki finally 1:30:09 seized his attack walking away and leaving his son to bleed to death on the kitchen floor it seemed that hideaki 1:30:15 wanted to take accountability for his brutal actions because at 3:30 p.m. that same afternoon he dialed the number for 1:30:22 the Japanese Emergency Services to report the murder of his son by his own hand paramedics rushed the family home 1:30:28 but sadly by the time they arrived it was all too late he had bled out long before he could receive help and was 1:30:35 therefore pronounced dead at the scene moving to the legal proceedings of this case but hiaki would never take any 1:30:41 accountability for his actions instead he would even try to justify them by saying that his son had attacked him 1:30:47 during an argument to make things worse he even claimed it was for the greater good as he didn't want his son to come 1:30:54 the next murder camori but by the time his second trial came around hideaki seemed to have a change of heart because 1:31:01 now he only claimed self-defense this didn't hold water in court however as 1:31:06 there was no evidence or proof to suggest that hideaki had struggled or even been physically hurt during the 1:31:11 attack more damning though was the evidence of premeditation to haki's Onslaught on his own son search 1:31:17 histories found on his computer showed that he had been heavily researching the legal repercussions of killing someone 1:31:23 in Japan and also how best to get these charges and sentences deferred or minimized to really cement his guilt a 1:31:30 letter was found addressed from hideaki to his wife stating that his son was beyond all help and the world would be a 1:31:36 better place if he were to Simply disappear faced with the overwhelming evidence hideaki stressed that despite 1:31:42 the premeditation he was extremely remorseful for what he had done to his son and that he felt that at the time he 1:31:49 had no other choice ultimately after pleading not guilty in February of 2020 W to the murder of his son hiaki kazawa 1:31:56 was found guilty and sentenced to Amiga 6 years in prison now here on coffee house crime we've seen some ridiculously 1:32:03 short sentences before but 6 years for murdering your own son it honestly leaves me feeling pretty dumbfounded 1:32:10 especially considering the sheer violence showed during the attack in his mind hideaki was convinced with such 1:32:17 complete certainty that his son was both capable and able to commit the same level of atrocities as ryuichi so much 1:32:24 so that it gave him every bit of internal validation and justification to stab him to death in his own home this 1:32:30 was all ultimately based on the flimsy connection of his son being a reclusive shut in like ruichi was despite other 1:32:37 similarities being noticeably absent there is also the possibility that hideaki believed he was enacting a noble 1:32:44 Deed by ridding the world and his family of his problematic son removing his burdensome existence from their lives 1:32:51 this was never stated by hideaki of course and he he likely pared what his lawyers instructed him to say in court 1:32:57 to give him the best chance of a short sentence given how successful and Senior his position was within the government 1:33:03 there is a distinct possibility that hideaki felt a sense of Shame at icher is perceived lack of any notable success 1:33:10 but for a sentence that short in my eyes nothing can really justify it especially not for the murder of your own son in 1:33:17 the aftermath of the trial the media didn't take long to link the two cases together and ran with a new Hot Topic of 1:33:23 cluses and their mental States becoming increasingly unstable as they aged and given that hikori numbers are only 1:33:30 Rising as time goes on the media claims that soon they will become a genuine danger to society shockingly a vast 1:33:37 number of people interviewed after the trial of hideaki kumazawa wholeheartedly supported his actions indicating just 1:33:43 how despised and shunn hiur are in Japanese Society by the way this runs in tandem with Japan's very awful views of 1:33:50 disabled people however there was a small Ray of Hope for following these two cases because after they became 1:33:57 widely publicized there was a substantial increase in people seeking help for themselves or for their loved 1:34:02 ones to overcome chronic reclusion and isolation the minister for health in Japan also released a statement 1:34:08 reassuring the population that these events should not be linked inherently with hikori the main point they made is 1:34:13 that every individual is different and experiencing different life circumstances now this sentiment is 1:34:19 particularly true although a small number of folks are shuttin and choose to sit in in their own world of hate 1:34:25 most people simply prefer their own space in privacy there can be a lot of comfort in being surrounded by your own 1:34:30 safe space and if a person finds this comfortable they should be allowed to live like this if they choose to aeru 1:34:36 may have not been happy with his life but it was pretty obvious that his mental health was under the influence of 1:34:42 far more than just being a reclusive individual and despite being reclusive to the physical world his virtual 1:34:48 friends in the Dragon Quest online community made the effort of holding a virtual funeral for him on his final 1:34:54 Twitter post comments can be seen split from both sides some agreed fully with haki's actions saying that he was fully 1:35:01 in the right to have killed his son and being hikori was justification enough for his father's snap but on the other 1:35:07 side of things several commentators sent prayers and wishes to AO offering their condolences and even hoping that in the 1:35:14 next life he would be allowed to be a part of the fictional world that he loved and adored so much on May the 28th 1:35:21 2019 rit's actions initially caused the death of two innocent individuals but 1:35:26 when you look at the case of iiro it could be argued that ruii actually had three innocent victims it may very well 1:35:33 be that had the events of may not taken place hideaki may never have felt the need to reach for the knife we will 1:35:41 likely never fully understand the reasoning and thought process behind his attack on his son but no matter how you 1:35:46 look at it nothing can ever justify such a senselessly brutal act given his ASD 1:35:52 diagnosis airo desperately needed the support early in his life to give him the maximum chance of success however in 1:35:59 lie of this he found his comfort and Solace with physical isolation fulfilling his hyper fixations in the 1:36:05 virtual worlds of video games and Anime heart-wrenchingly given the type of life that he led there aren't a vast number 1:36:12 of people around who feel the impact of the loss of a chiro but given his online presence and the love shown towards him 1:36:18 after his death on Twitter there are at least some who will miss him and will remember him fondly Yuka Takaoka 1:36:26 so although our next story is more Punchy it comes with another terrible haircut and that's the Strange Case of 1:36:31 Yuka takaoka after believing that a so-called boyfriend was cheating on her she decided to turn against him in 1:36:37 February of 2019 speaking of actions and reactions hers were not the gentlest and 1:36:43 the slightest either way from this point forward she would be known as the real life 1:36:49 yander our short story starts in Tokyo Japan it was October 2018 and 1:36:55 21-year-old yukitoki resided in Shinjuku City Shinjuku is a special district in 1:37:02 Tokyo known for its buzzing clubs karaoke rooms and upscale restaurants all of them shrouded by skyscrapers Yuka 1:37:10 was living an alternate life or at least by Western standards she dropped out of University at the age of 19 to become 1:37:17 the manager of a hostess club in Shinjuku Hostess clubs are popular in the nightlife industry of East Asian 1:37:24 countries typically hiring female employees to serve drinks and provide thoughtful conversation to male 1:37:30 customers and Uka was also a fan of anime a style of Japanese animation 1:37:35 typically aimed for both adults and children she was so much of a fan in fact that she would often post pictures 1:37:41 of herself dressing up and cosplaying as some of her favorite characters on her Twitter and Instagram Pages still up to 1:37:47 the state she was a quietly shy individual the type of person who initially wouldn't say much but grew 1:37:54 confidence the more she knew you generally laidback and sweet not the type you'd expect any problems 1:38:03 from back to anime one of her favorite types of cosplays was the yandere characters a specific type of 1:38:10 Personality yandere are generally kind nurturing and lovable women ones of which that eventually turn violent and 1:38:17 possessive over a love interest can you see where this is going in October that 1:38:22 year while still working at her Hostess bar she met a 20-year-old man named Phoenix Luna he was also a host at a 1:38:29 nearby host bar called Fusion nightclub host bars are the same as hostess bars just hiring male employees for female 1:38:36 customers and Fenix Luna was in a game of his own he was very popular amongst 1:38:41 the hosts in Shinjuku and often was in the bars leaderboards a lot of his female patrons often returning for his 1:38:47 bartending Services now just to point out this is all safe for work host bars 1:38:53 and and hostess bars are strictly PG at least officially other than having 1:38:58 things in common Yuka and Phoenix were in the same industry they understood each other well from a professional 1:39:04 point of view and with their late night work schedules matching it meant that they had a lot of time out of working 1:39:10 hours to connect as friends it was due to these reasons over the following weeks and months that the two grew 1:39:15 closer to each other and eventually started dating the relationship wasn't all fine and dandy though although the 1:39:22 matching hours gave more time to see each other it also created some tension between the two with UK and Phoenix both 1:39:28 working in the same industry one designed to generate money through flirting it posed and be a risk for the 1:39:35 green devil jealousy and oh boy did that work for Yuka over the following months 1:39:41 she grew more and more possessive over him often monitoring his whereabouts and even checking on his phone when he 1:39:47 wasn't looking she grew so ever increasingly jealous over Phoenix that eventually she she outright bought his 1:39:54 services from the bar paying over $9,000 a month just so he wouldn't see any 1:39:59 other women a little bit strange don't you think fast forward and it is now may 1:40:04 the 23rd 2019 a few months after the two had started dating things were going pretty 1:40:11 well for the two and despite a few tensions here and there the two were happy Yuka was still managing the 1:40:16 hostess bar and business was solid she'd taken a couple days off of work to sort some things out in the apartment she'd 1:40:23 asked Phoenix to drop by her house to help with some DIY in which he agreed he'd arrived at her home much later than 1:40:30 expected though it was a very long shift at the bar that night and when he got in he was exhausted he asked Yuka if he 1:40:37 could run himself a bath to relax in which she agreed one he got into and 1:40:43 then fell asleep in during that time though Yuka had once again snooped through her boyfriend's phone and while 1:40:49 doing so she found a few photos of him with another woman she didn't know who 1:40:54 she was and it couldn't be a client because she' bought him out this discovery enraged Uka she'd noticed for 1:41:01 the last couple days that he'd been dist with her she put that together with these photos and took it as evidence 1:41:07 that he was cheating on her so how would you confront your partner if you were suspicious over a 1:41:13 picture discuss any problems in the relationship ask if everything's okay 1:41:18 not for Yuka that's not how she rolled after waking up in the bath put on some 1:41:24 underwear he then crept into the bedroom and slid into the bed trying not to wake yuker who was supposedly already asleep 1:41:31 and because he was so already exhausted from all of his shifts the last few days he passed out pretty much 1:41:40 immediately some time had passed when all of a sudden Phoenix felt an uncomfortable feeling coming from his 1:41:46 stomach he looked down and that's when he saw a knife lodged into his abdomen 1:41:53 waking up in Surprise and Terror he looked back up to see Yuka arched over him is this real am I dreaming he 1:42:00 thought running on pure adrenaline he shoved her off the bed and ran out the room yuk could chased Phoenix grabbing 1:42:06 him as he left the front door him being taller though he was stronger and Pusher away as he reached the elevator by now 1:42:14 Phoenix was losing a lot of blood the elevator door was closing and it was heading towards the ground floor and as 1:42:21 the elevator door opened up to the lobby he lunged forward almost to safety and 1:42:26 then lost Consciousness yuk could caught up with Phoenix he lay collapsed on the floor of 1:42:32 the hotel lobby blood pulling around his body by now passes by had noticed the 1:42:39 horrific scene unfolding and the police they'd called them immediately but Uka 1:42:45 she wouldn't leave his side she just sat there next to his body and people were too scared to get close to them in case 1:42:52 she did something back and the following picture is what has made this case notorious when they got there police 1:42:58 found uker sat next to his body drenched in his blood casually smoking a cigarette while on the phone to her 1:43:06 friend in the time had taken police to get there should also written a letter 1:43:11 with his blood repeatedly saying I love you over and over and over again Tokyo 1:43:16 Metropolitan Police apprehended Uka immediately they would find the letter that she wrote along with the knife she' 1:43:21 used to stab Phoenix in her apartment when the officer had asked her why she did it she replied with I was sad and 1:43:28 seeking to die I thought that if I kill him I could be with him I thought that Expressions such as I like you and I 1:43:35 would like to be with you would become reality if we both died numerous Witnesses watched as police escorted 1:43:42 Yuka into the back of their vehicle and when she got in there she was 1:43:47 smiling and as for the victim Phoenix Luna he was still alive but only barely 1:43:53 following the speed in which police and paramedics had got to the apartments he had not yet passed from his injuries he 1:43:59 was transported to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition with only a 20% chance to survive but on 1:44:06 July the 1st an entire month after he was stabbed in the abdomen to everyone's surprise Fenix Luna was alive and 1:44:13 recovering he tweeted friends and fans to say sorry I'm alive and back before 1:44:18 adding since I was stabbed in the liver I can't drink being a survivor of a horrific experience Phoenix agreed to 1:44:25 attending a local interview and in that interview he refused to show any hate towards Yuka when asked he said that I 1:44:33 do not hold a grudge he even pleaded with the judge to reduce her sentence on 1:44:38 Thursday the 5th of December 2019 the presiding judge sentenced uker to 3 years and 6 months for attempted M did I 1:44:46 get that right yep 3 years and 6 months on Thursday the 5th of December 2019 the 1:44:53 presiding judge handed Uka a prison term of 3 years and 6 months for attempted murder Uka and Phoenix previously had 1:45:00 made a court settlement for her to pay him 5 million yen the equivalent of $47,000 as a means to reduce her time 1:45:07 behind bars at her hearing the court judge declared if possible I want people to be able to lead a normal life rather 1:45:14 than paying for their sins and the story doesn't end there following yuka's 1:45:19 attempted murder and imprisonment she grew an entire online community of fans most of which are invested in anime 1:45:25 culture that possess a deep admiration for her haing her as if she were a real life yandere her fans believed that she 1:45:32 didn't need to be condemned for her actions only rehabilitated she even had a GoFundMe 1:45:38 style campaign raised for her and while the campaign was shut down at the time she was receiving over $3,800 from 69 1:45:46 contributors almost the amount needed to get her out of prison following yuka's crime of attempted murder she's now 1:45:53 scheduled to be released from prison in May 2023 with this case happening in 2019 and Yuka only receiving 3 years it 1:46:01 is crazy to think that she is now back in the real world hopefully she has addressed whatever mental health issues 1:46:06 she was experiencing and as for Phoenix I admire his forgiveness now our next story is absolutely tragic and if you're Shinji Aoba 1:46:13 an anime fan you've likely heard this one before already but this is the story of Shinji Oba with vibrant skylines 1:46:21 modern architecture and supreme infrastructure structure Kyoto has a bit of everything something that many 1:46:27 companies and corporations would look for when settling an office and one of those companies was 1:46:33 Kyoto animation originally founded in 1981 by hideaki hat and his wife Yoko Kyoto 1:46:41 animation has thrived from humble beginnings as a small Production Services Company into one of Japan's 1:46:46 most successful Studios over the years Kyoto animation became recognized for its high 1:46:52 production value and its sensitivity to the Wonders and quandaries of ordinary life unlike most Studios they also paid 1:46:59 their employees and salary rather than freelance contract they would also train their employees in house thus 1:47:05 encouraging them to focus on quality rather than quota Kyoto animation grew 1:47:10 as a company over the decades eventually moving from its head office in uji City to Fushimi cou in Kyoto the new site 1:47:17 affectionately named Studio 1 they would go on to create popular anime titles such as as clad Kon and a silent Voice 1:47:26 by the year of 2019 kyota animation was thriving they were well known not just for their products but for their 1:47:32 business practice too but as with all types of Fame all that positive attention will come with a slice of 1:47:38 negativity too I mean sure some would simply just find coot animations work boring some would even find a way to 1:47:45 dislike their business model but what I'm talking about is a very small minority the type that would find 1:47:51 personal hatred out of nothing and one of those individuals would go by the name of Shinji 1:48:00 Alba in 2019 Shinji Alba was a 40-year-old man who lived in 1:48:06 saitama he was born on the 16th of May 1978 he grew up in madoru a ward in 1:48:14 saama City when he was a child though his parents would divorce and this would 1:48:19 leave him with his father brother and sister Shinji lived a troubled life into 1:48:24 adulthood his classmates would describe him as absent and often a rate after he 1:48:30 graduated he became a part-time clerk at a convenience store after that though at the age of 34 1:48:36 Shinji would run into trouble with the law it was June 2012 and he robbed a convenience store with a knife he would 1:48:43 gain 20,000 yen or $200 from it but he would eventually get caught police 1:48:48 sentenced Shinji to 3 and a half years in prison at his trial he would tell PR that he was sick of living in a society 1:48:55 he was eventually released in 2016 where he moved back into an apartment in Saima City back in Kyoto kyot animation was 1:49:03 growing from strength to strength through the years and since 2009 kyot animation had been hosting an annual 1:49:09 competition called The Kyoto animation Awards they would Host this competition to connect with their audience and offer 1:49:15 exposure to talented writers where contestants could submit their stories to coot animation for 1:49:21 review the the selected winning stories to this competition would be published under the company's imprint and if 1:49:27 they're lucky would later have a chance to be adapted into an anime the award itself is prestigious and with 1 million 1:49:34 yen or $10,000 up for grabs it's fiercely competitive too and this is where Kyoto animation 1:49:40 and Shinji Alba first crossed paths because between the years of 2017 and 1:49:46 2018 Shinji would submit a story to coyot animation twice anime is very commonly watched in 1:49:53 Japan so much that it's predicted that about 35% of its population watches it 1:49:59 more than once a week and for Shinji he was very heavily in that category being 1:50:04 a stay home kind of guy he would heavily absorb himself into anime and gaming pretty much every day of the year his 1:50:10 submissions to coyot animation would not go very far though Unfortunately they were formally eliminated by judges in 1:50:16 the first round the numerous rejections disappointed Shinji they angered him in 1:50:21 fact but the grudge against coot animation would only start here and 1:50:27 shinji's troubled mind would only grow worse too since his release from prison Shinji 1:50:34 was growing further isolated from friends and family in fact he almost had none in 1999 his father committed 1:50:42 suicide and since then he'd cut all contact with his brother and sister 1:50:47 too it was clear that by 2018 Shinji seemed resentful to the world and 1:50:53 antisocial with no family or friends to love he became bitter and with the only interactions with people around him 1:51:00 being his neighbors they were becoming violent too in late 2018 after his stories had 1:51:06 already been rejected by coot animation chinji was an unstable man but there would be one new detail to his life 1:51:13 which would set him down his darkest path he was in his home one evening watching more anime and the anime it was 1:51:19 made by coot animation in his deluded isolated mindset though he made a 1:51:24 connection the connection was that actually what he had just been watching it seemed way too familiar in fact it 1:51:31 was his story the story he submitted in the contest last year Kyoto animation 1:51:37 they'd stolen from him this outraged Shinji and kot animation they were going 1:51:42 to hear about [Music] it around the same time in October Stafford wake up one morning to over 200 1:51:50 death threats for email all sent to to various employees across the business the sender using anonymized software to 1:51:56 withhold their identity the police were contacted but since these emails were fired out using 1:52:03 tour it was impossible to find out who the sender was maybe we can take a guess though 1:52:09 instead police patrols were temporarily deployed around the building and while the death threat stopped Vengeance would 1:52:15 soon be made in a much more Sinister way the following [Music] 1:52:21 year Sunday the 14th of July 1:52:29 2019 9 months had passed but shinji's life it was still the same it was the 1:52:34 weekend and Matsumoto a 27-year-old quality control engineer was enjoying his weekend on the couch Matsumoto or 1:52:41 Matsu and Shinji were neighbors and unfortunately for the two of them another neighbor upstairs was assembling 1:52:47 Furniture Shinji though he thought it was Matsu the two often complained that he other over noise usually though 1:52:54 Shinji was the loud one Shinji started to bang on the shared wall between his and Matsu's Apartments Matsu being the 1:53:01 courteous guy walked up to shinji's front door to tell him that the noise it wasn't him Shinji opened his front door 1:53:07 and he grabbed Matsu by the collar of his shirt before shouting at him you're too loud shut up I'm going to kill you I 1:53:15 have nothing to lose Shinji would eventually let go of Matsu and Matsu who was too scared to 1:53:21 stay at home walked down to the police station to report the assault by the time police would get to shinji's house 1:53:28 though to confront him he was gone and where he'd gone to was anyone's 1:53:34 guess by the next day Shinji had taken the shin Canen bullet train to Tokio and 1:53:39 checked in at a local Downtown hotel and the next morning on July the 16th Shinji 1:53:44 traveled to Kyoto CCTV cameras captured him at various points along the 1:53:51 way one at an Internet Cafe south of Kyoto station that night he stayed in another 1:53:58 nearby Hotel on Wednesday the 17th of July still wearing the same jeans and red 1:54:03 t-shirt that he'd worn for the last 3 days Shinji walked into a hardware store and bought himself a metal 1:54:10 trolley he then wheeled the trolley 6 miles north before stopping at an enus 1:54:15 gas station to purchase 10 gallons of gasoline Shinji then traveled with his 1:54:21 trolley full of gasoline along uji river towards coyota animations Studio he would stop at the night for 1:54:28 hotel and the plans he had in store for tomorrow would be nothing short of 1:54:37 evil on Thursday the 18th of July 2019 Shinji arrived at K Animation Studio 1:54:43 with the cart full of gasoline the time was 10:31 a.m. and some 70 employees were inside working 1:54:51 away that is when Shinji pushed through the building's front doors he toppled over 1:54:57 one of the buckets of the gasoline he then flicked a lighter and screamed you 1:55:02 will die within 10 seconds of ignition the 1:55:08 bucket of gasoline had exploded setting the building's first floor entirely a light and within another 10 seconds the 1:55:16 second floor was fully Ablaze too windows on the third floor were 1:55:21 destroyed Within one minute of the blast black smoke blowing out from every open hole that it could 1:55:28 find Shinji Alba was still alive but considering he set the canister light 1:55:33 and that exploded less than 10 seconds later he was on fire he ran out of the 1:55:39 building before collapsing in a street nearby passers by unaware of who the monster was quickly treated Shinji for 1:55:45 his injuries he would very quickly regain Consciousness as soon as he did he clambered to his feet and tried to 1:55:51 run away however two people from kyot animation recognized him they chased after him and 1:55:57 then bred him to the ground that is when police intervened and they caught up with him when they found out who he was 1:56:05 and they asked him why he did it Shinji shouted the plagiarized my work I demanded to speak to the company 1:56:12 president firefighters were quick to the scene but the fate of half of the people inside had already been 1:56:19 determined the fire would continue to burn without m Mery for 5 long 1:56:24 hours rescue workers would eventually find the bodies of 33 employees later that evening three on the first floor 11 1:56:32 on the second floor and 19 on the spiral staircase to the roof of which the door 1:56:37 had failed to open from inside the staircase acting as a Giant's funnel to fuel the 1:56:44 fire dozens more that were in the building at the time of the attack would be treated for their injuries but 1:56:50 unfortunately over the following weeks three more would die to their wounds bringing the total death toll to 1:56:56 36 Japan was in total shock after the attack as news of the fire became more 1:57:02 obviously evil the nation the world and the anime Community all looked on in 1:57:07 anger and despair Shinji Alba would become the as salant to one of the nation's largest 1:57:13 acts of mass murder since the end of World War 1:57:20 II as firefighters ended to Shinji on the streets police would discover that he actually had a plan B they found six 1:57:27 unused knives probably to be used if his arsonist plan failed to work and despite the several witnesses putting Shinji as 1:57:33 the main suspect the six unused knives found on his Persona and soon CCTV footage showing him at various locations 1:57:40 with the carts full of gasoline Kyoto police were not able to formally arrest the man he had suffered severe burns 1:57:46 across his entire body injuring himself so badly that he was unconscious and although police had a warrant for his 1:57:53 arrest they were unable to formally do that until medical examinations certified that he would be fit to 1:57:58 survive in a Detention Facility Shinji was actually given a 1% chance to live and as the days turned 1:58:05 into weeks he was still unconscious after the attack and miraculously or unfortunately depending which way you 1:58:12 look at it Shinji would survive his injuries in September 2019 doctors would 1:58:17 certify that he was no longer in a life-threatening condition there was a lack of human skin of available for 1:58:22 grafting though as organ donation is rare in Japan so officials made the right 1:58:28 decision to give the victims priority to receive donor skin before Shinji and that donor would never arrive as Shinji 1:58:35 became the first person in Japan to get a fully artificial skin graft police 1:58:40 would eventually be able to start questioning Shinji in September 2019 and it was then that he confirmed 1:58:46 again that yes he was the arsonist to the attack he would then go on to say I 1:58:52 had a grudge against Kyoto animation I thought that if I sprayed gasoline around the building while setting the 1:58:57 fire I could kill more people so that's why I did that it was in May 2020 that 1:59:03 Shinji was declared fit enough for arrest 10 months after the attack by this time though the world had started 1:59:09 spiraling into a pandemic the story of Shinji Aruba would slowly trundle on but 1:59:14 without the international attention had once received he was formally arrested on the 1:59:19 27th of May 2020 and by December 2020 he was formally charged too the 42-year-old 1:59:27 undeniably guilty of his crimes he would confirm the reason for his rage is that he felt coyot animation had stolen one 1:59:34 of his ideas and they' used it in one of their anime without crediting or compensating him he said the thing kot 1:59:42 animation copied from me was the scene in Sur where the main characters by discounted meat according to reports the 1:59:49 scene is vastly generic and K animation they deny plagiarizing anything from the 1:59:54 man the days following the studio Massacre coot animation initially stated that they were not aware of any contest 2:00:01 entries by Shinji but during a more thorough examination they discovered that he had indeed submitted his own 2:00:07 novel this would again highlight though that his novel had been rejected in the first round of judgments and scrapped 2:00:13 from the company's awareness a year and a half after the attack a six-month psychological 2:00:18 evaluation on shinji's Mental Health had ended and the conclusion was that yes Shinji he knew what he was 2:00:25 doing when he lit the fire he was mentally coherent this paves the way for Shinji to be prosecuted to the full 2:00:30 extent of the law and with Japan accepting the death penalty in certain circumstances and this being one of the 2:00:37 worst mass murders in over 70 years time it's not looking very good for Shinji 2:00:43 kot animation also shared that they expect Shinji to be prosecuted to the maximum extent under Japanese 2:00:49 law shinji's terrible actions left a scar on the anime Community with 36 2:00:54 deaths and a further 34 injuries in recent news though he has since been found guilty and as of last month has 2:01:01 been sentenced to death so for this compilation let's dive into one final video and although this begins in the UK Joji Obara 2:01:09 it ends in a Japanese Millionaire's home our story today begins in the 2:01:14 southeast of England welcome to Kent there's a lot of history in this part of the UK but now Kent's economy is 2:01:21 primarily Focus F upon Services known as The Garden of England Kent is full to the brim of old Cathedrals and castles 2:01:27 but recently it's building itself a reputation for its food and wine found towards the Western border of 2:01:33 Kent lies a small town named Seven Oaks and here lived Lucy Blackman Lucy was born on September the 2:01:40 1st 1978 to her mother Jane and Father Tim Blackman Lucy was the oldest of 2:01:45 three siblings and her younger sister Sophie and younger brother Rupert completed the family of five but sadly 2:01:51 her parents would divorce in the middle of Lucy's childhood and throughout this separation Lucy along with her mother 2:01:57 brother and sister would find themselves moving to Kent Lucy was described as a very happy child always full of energy 2:02:04 and forthright with positivity she was a meticulous planner and this served her well in school following her graduation 2:02:11 from school Lucy made the decision to become a flight attendant for British Airways a job which obviously would 2:02:16 allow her to fly all over the world but over the following couple years she had grown exhausted from the constant travel 2:02:22 and work and with many of these jobs not paying very well this left Lucy short on money and as a result she spiral into a 2:02:29 small debt like many of us going through our first job it was in this moment of exhaustion that Lucy began to question 2:02:36 her choice in career and Direction Lucy loved to travel and although her job with British Airways was relatively good 2:02:43 it wasn't doing her any favors financially or for her mental health this was when Lucy and one of her 2:02:48 friends and colleagues Louise hatched up a plan traveling didn't have to be hopping from one country to another 2:02:53 every week they could settle in one foreign location find a good job and earn good money the two flights 2:02:59 attendants had always liked the look of Japan a country which is seriously like no other being home to more than a dozen 2:03:06 UNESCO world heritage sites Japan's traditions and principles Run Deep throughout the country add its food 2:03:12 modern technology and sprawling Suburban lifestyle to the mix and you're only just touching the 2:03:17 surface with this interest in mind Lucy and Louise decided to leave their jobs at to shs and instead find a job in 2:03:23 Japan to repay their debts the idea was nerve-wracking but they had each other and so with that said they purchased 2:03:30 their tickets headed over to hether airport and boarded their flight to 2:03:36 Japan in May of the year 2000 Lucy and Lise found themselves in the heart of Tokyo settling for an apartment near 2:03:43 rongi a district well known for its nightlife in Western culture they spread out to find a job and soon after that 2:03:49 they came back with an offer they began to work at one of the local nightclubs called Casablanca where they became 2:03:54 hostesses to its many patrons among many other aspects Japan has its own way of doing things when 2:04:00 compared to the Western World and host and Hostess clubs also known as kabakura fall into this category hostesses are 2:04:07 paid to light cigarettes provide drinks Converse and perhaps flirt with their customers this may include karaoke but 2:04:14 it's worth mentioning that dancing stripping and anything otherwise are generally abandoned curas it's a place 2:04:20 for businessmen or women to relax and enjoy themselves all within a PG atmosphere and particularly in raponi 2:04:27 many of these bars sought to hire Western women for their Japanese patrons the pay was fine and they both had good 2:04:32 experience in public customer service how hard could it be anyway as part of 2:04:37 Casablanca club's rules all hostesses are encouraged to meet their customers for dinner prior to bringing them to the 2:04:42 club where their shift would begin and this kind of dinner date is known as a Dohan in Japan Lucy's parents were 2:04:48 concerned about their daughter's choice in work but she was confident and made it very clear that she knew her limits 2:04:54 she described the job as still being an air hostess but without the 2:05:00 altitude July the 1st 2000 in the warm Saturday afternoon Lucy 2:05:05 slipped on her sandals and black dress as she made her way to the front door seeing her friend Louise in the adjacent 2:05:11 room she explained that she was going on a Dohan with a customer from the Casablanca Club she said he'd offered 2:05:17 her a new mobile phone in return and the date would only be an hour long at a restaurant near the beach 2:05:23 Louise understood she told Lucy not to take too long as the girls had plans lateer that evening her boyfriend Scott 2:05:29 Fraser was also in the area and the three of them were looking forward to the weekend plans Lucy would message 2:05:34 Louise three times later that day her first message sent at 1:30 p.m. said I am now with my lunch date and at 5:00 2:05:42 p.m. she sent Louise another text message to say I am being taken to the Sea and finally at around 6:45 p.m. she 2:05:49 sent her third and final text message I'll be back in half an hour this same text message was sent to Scott a few 2:05:56 minutes later but as the Clock Struck 8:00 p.m. Lucy still hadn't returned home and as Tokyo slipped further into 2:06:02 the night Lucy remained unaccounted for despite having evening plans telling her friend and her boyfriend that she was on 2:06:09 her way no one had seen or heard from Lucy quite simply she had 2:06:14 vanished what do you do when your friend disappears in a foreign city and not just any foreign city but the capsule of 2:06:22 Japan with the greater Tokyo area holding a population of 34.4 million residents finding a needle in a hay 2:06:28 stack would be much easier adding unfamiliarity to the country's language law and practices and you're now in very 2:06:35 uncomfortable territory Louise contacted local police but they didn't seem too interested and 2:06:41 as Saturday crawled into Sunday and then into Monday there were still no signs of ly no one at the club had seen her and 2:06:48 all phone calls and text messages to her mobile were seemingly ignored but then suddenly in the evening of 2:06:54 Monday the 3rd of July Louise received a phone call it was from a man with a thick Japanese accent he spoke English 2:07:01 well but slowly he said Lucy can't talk at the moment Lucy is okay but she isn't 2:07:07 coming home she has joined a newly risen cult She is safe and training in Hutton 2:07:12 Chiba back at home in England and Lucy's mother Jane had just been made aware of Lucy's disappearance and her reaction 2:07:19 was Swift and violent from the very moment that that she knew her daughter was missing she was terrified the 2:07:25 anonymous call was concerning in its own right but it was also extremely out of character for Lucy to just vanish 2:07:30 without saying anything just the very next morning Lucy's sister Sophie and her ex-boyfriend Jamie were now on a 2:07:36 flight to Tokyo and the challenge they now faced before themselves was both expansive and daunting although a 2:07:42 missings person's report had been filed police were very lethargic to look into Lucy's case and over the following days 2:07:48 working with authorities was both cumbersome and frustrating they simply didn't care they exclaimed that she was 2:07:54 an adult free to do whatever she wants and quite frankly it wasn't their problem at the time police effort was 2:08:01 very poor Lucy's silence could mean a life or death situation not to add to her family's extreme anxieties but time 2:08:07 really was of the essence they realized they were not going to get anywhere with this current momentum and so as a result 2:08:14 they directed their attention towards the media instead perhaps if Lucy's case publicly blew up it would Garner tips 2:08:19 and information and finally kick local police into action making public appearances in front of the Japanese 2:08:26 press nurtured strong results and over the following days Lucy's disappearance grew in notoriety and attention the 2:08:32 Japanese public started to weigh in and help many tips came through to the new private hotline and although this 2:08:38 sounded encouraging there were a lot of red herrings and as Lucy's family approached the two we Mark both anxiety 2:08:44 and Desperation started to boil by now both English and Japanese media were obsessed with the case even Prime 2:08:51 Minister Tony Blair and virgins Richard Branson making appeals to the public and this put a lot of pressure on Japanese 2:08:57 police by the end of the third week a handwritten letter had made its way to the police this note was apparently 2:09:03 written by Lucy in which he said she was okay and didn't want to be contacted however the signature was 2:09:09 proven to be forged somebody out there was playing games with the police in parallel to this Lucy's family made the 2:09:16 decision to hire a private investigator from England and being assigned the job he flew over to Tokyo immediately 2:09:22 he began to prowl the streets of rongi and Ginza and eventually he found his way to Club Casablanca while he was here 2:09:29 one of the other Western hostesses came forward she admitted seeing Lucy with another man in the nights before she 2:09:34 disappeared so maybe he knew something using his contacts from Scotland Yard 2:09:40 back in the UK this private investigator had an artist impression created from the given description which in return 2:09:46 created this profile image and as Lucy's disappearance spread like wildfire 2:09:51 multile Western women would eventually come forward all of them gave very concerning stories of their experience 2:09:56 with a man thought to be the same person in this profile image and as one account turned into several a very worrying 2:10:02 pattern emerged in each and every case this man would take the young woman on a Dohan promising them money and luxurious 2:10:08 gifts before lowering them back to his apartment and after arriving he would spike their drink and assault 2:10:14 them although the name of this man varied from victim to victim his appearance did not he was described to 2:10:20 be mid mid-aged man he had medium length hair for a man and he was handsome charming and visibly 2:10:27 Rich the collected accounts of several young women when combined with the police sketch was encouraging news to 2:10:32 investigators it gave them a definitive lead to work towards however despite this no new discoveries were made and as 2:10:39 Lucy's disappearance slipped from weeks into months many started to doubt if they would ever hear from her again as 2:10:45 time goes by both the public and media attention tend to grow less interested in the missing person's case and 2:10:50 realistically so does the opportunity to collect evidence surveillance tapes get written over fingerprints are weathered 2:10:56 away and people's memories of the Day begin to fade it was beginning to look less and less likely that this case 2:11:02 would ever be solved when suddenly in the fourth month of police investigation officers made a breakthrough as October 2:11:09 rolled around a prime suspect had at long last been identified the man's name was Joi abara he was known to frequent 2:11:17 Casablanca Club but always under a different name nevertheless he perfectly fit the description given by multiple 2:11:23 victims born on August the 10th 1952 joara came from a hardworking family 2:11:29 hard work that for his father turned into Fortune his father was a Korean immigrant he moved to Japan as a young 2:11:35 adult with no money but Big Dreams his tenacity and hard work ethic served him very well he may have begun his career 2:11:42 as a scrap collector but by the time he and his wife gave birth to Jo he was extremely wealthy building an empire 2:11:49 through taxi companies pinko paror and real estate business along with his two brothers Joi 2:11:55 earned himself a reputation as the stereotypical rich kid at school he was often protected by his father's wealth 2:12:01 and by the time he enrolled into KO Senior High School in Kanagawa his father rewarded him with a house 2:12:07 unfortunately at the age of 17 his father sadly passed away leaving Joi and his two brothers over 40 million yen in 2:12:14 assets across Asaka and Tokyo the equivalent to £25 million or $33 2:12:20 million after graduating from KO University with a degree in politics and law he became a naturalized Japanese 2:12:26 citizen with his brothers moving on to become doctors but progressing into his 30s joji found his everyday job to be 2:12:32 tedious and boring it was around this time from 1986 to 1991 that Japan 2:12:38 experienced an economic bubble meaning that the real estate and stock market prices began to Rocket Joi heavily 2:12:44 invested into this believing that prices would continue to indefinitely rise but in the early months of 1992 this bubble 2:12:51 burst causing real estate prices to plunge and Japan's economy to 2:12:56 stagnate he lost the risk and as a result his F collapsed his fortune almost entirely gone but he wasn't out 2:13:03 of the fight yet instead he began to use his company as a money laundering front for the Yakuza also known as the 2:13:10 Japanese Mafia so as soon as Joi was recognized as the man in the police sketch officers began to build a case 2:13:15 around him and of course keep him under close observation and finally in early October he was was officially arrested 2:13:21 and charged on five counts of indecent assault therefore allowing officers to raid and investigate his 2:13:28 property what they found inside was devastating he had a large Library full of videos of himself taking advantage of 2:13:35 his drugged victims with some of these crimes dating back all the way to the early '90s he had been committing these 2:13:41 awful acts of violence for almost an entire decade despite police findings and 2:13:46 victim accusations Joi denied all acts of violence and also denied ever meeting Lucy this is on the contrary to multiple 2:13:53 reports placing him in the same bar as her only days prior to her disappearance with Joi behind bars but 2:13:59 as evidence mostly circumstantial Lucy's family needed more information to feel comfortable that he was Lucy's suspect 2:14:06 off the back of this an international appeal was launched to ask anyone who may have had experience with Jo GI abara to come forward and this would strike a 2:14:13 cord with an Australian Man 8 years earlier in February of 1992 he was in 2:14:18 love with a woman named karita Ridgeway in in fact they were engaged looking forward to spend the rest of their lives 2:14:24 together but things didn't quite turn out that way karita was an aspiring actress but with her dream of making it 2:14:31 big she needed money to attend acting school and I'm sorry if you can see where this is going karita decided to 2:14:37 pay for her tuition by becoming a Hostess in Tokyo's curas and as part of this agreement she would go on 2:14:43 doans on February 27th 1992 karita attended a Dohan with a rich Japanese 2:14:49 man but after this date she was dropped off unconscious karita was rushed to 2:14:54 hospital in which doctors did the very best they could to save her but tragically 2 days later she died of 2:15:00 liver failure the cause of her death was officially deemed to be Hepatitis E or 2:15:05 natural causes but this idea never felt plausible to her family or boyfriend 2:15:10 karita was a healthy woman she had no concerning medical history and she was always clean the boyfriend contacted 2:15:17 Japanese authorities who in return reopened K's case with a sharp Focus to link her with Joi abara and the 2:15:23 conclusion they were looking for came very quickly amongst the 400 videotapes found 2:15:28 in joi's home was one named K Ridgeway and in his diary on February the 27th 1992 he had written K Ridgeway too much 2:15:37 chloroform as tragic as this development was this information was all that police needed to upgrade Jo's charges from 2:15:44 assault to murder and although this fresh evidence was successful in strengthening his role in Lucy's 2:15:49 disappearance it sadly didn't confirm it but then in January of 2001 6 months 2:15:54 after Lucy Had vanished a very sad and solemn Discovery was made on January the 10th 2001 2:16:02 investigations LED police to a cave off the shores of Mira in Kanagawa and this cave was only 100 m away from Jo's 2:16:10 apartment while here they noticed uneven concrete underneath the Basin of a bathtub rather puzzled they began to 2:16:17 remove the concrete and what they found underneath were a series of packages they slowly opened these packages up and 2:16:24 tragically inside each of them were dismembered body parts with even the head ined in concrete when postmortem 2:16:31 examiners cut into the cement they hoped to find teeth to match with dental records but instead they immediately 2:16:37 found one identifiable feature it was long natural blonde hair as you can probably guess the body 2:16:44 was later confirmed to belong to Lucy Blackman Lucy's family were devastated 2:16:49 the long spell of Silence from their daughter already painted a very grave reality for her but they always held on 2:16:54 to the hope that maybe one day she would return and this discovery would put an end to their hopes the discovery of 2:17:01 Lucy's body would ignite a very long exhausting legal battle between joji abara and not just the family of Lucy 2:17:07 and karita but the family of many other victims too juji had now been charged with nine counts of indecent assault the 2:17:13 murder of K Ridgeway and now the murder of Lucy Blackman too but he would still deny having anything to do with Lucy's 2:17:20 death and and this was despite her body being found not even 2 minutes from his apartment Joi admitted that he'd spent 2:17:26 the evening with her but insisted that shortly after 5:00 p.m. she had left the apartment apparently she was high and 2:17:32 therefore he asked her to leave the entire trial would last almost seven long years which was full of 2:17:37 disappointing spectacles by Joi in one of his days in courts he refused to leave his jail cell and instead he 2:17:43 stripped naked held onto his toilet Basin and repeatedly screamed no there is some extremely frustrating evidence 2:17:50 coming up but before that I wanted to share with you that Joi was found not guilty over the murder of Lucy Blackman 2:17:56 which makes the following details all the more enraging through the multitudes of 2:18:01 analysis investigators were able to confirm the following at around 400 p.m. on July the 1st 2000 Lucy met up with 2:18:08 Joi an hour later she rang Louise to say that they were on their way to the coast mobile phone data confirms this at 5:30 2:18:16 p.m. a Japanese couple saw Joi and Louise together at a seaside resort and a photo from a camera from Jo's flat 2:18:23 confirms that they were on the beach shortly after blonde hairs belonging to Lucy were found in his flat and this was 2:18:28 confirmed by DNA analysis mobile phone records confirmed that Lucy made a final call in the evening while in his home 2:18:35 this was confirmed by triangulating her mobile phone's coordinates copies of a forged signature were found in his 2:18:41 apartment proving that he was the fraudster who had pretended to be her through a letter we don't quite know 2:18:46 what happened later this evening but the very next day on July the 2nd phone record show that Joi had called several 2:18:52 hospitals in his area asking how to treat someone who's experienced a drug overdose the very next day on July the 2:18:58 3rd receipts confirm that Joi purchased a chainsaw cement mix and other tools from a hardware store and later that 2:19:05 afternoon police were called by Jo's neighbor who' complained about suspicious activity and noise as 2:19:10 apparently they had heard terrified shouting the day prior it gets even more suspicious 2:19:17 police reports indicate that late that afternoon officers arrived at joi's apartment to request that they look 2:19:22 around upon entering they found that he had cement mix on his hands and he was visibly shaken when police requested to 2:19:29 look in his bathroom he became aggressive and refused to let them in instead exclaiming that they'd already seen enough the police left without 2:19:36 pressing this issue any further neighbors reported that later in the evening on the same day they witnessed 2:19:41 joji pacing the small Beach next to his apartment several times and Hospital records show that he was treated for 2:19:46 extensive bug bites the next day as a result for being outside all night however despite the text messages phone 2:19:53 calls witness reports police reports Forge signature mobile phone data DNA 2:19:58 previous cases and bug bites he was still found innocent over Lucy's murder 2:20:03 granted he was found guilty on nine counts of indecent assault and the murder of karita Ridgeway therefore 2:20:08 sentencing him to life but really the reason for this is the prosecutor couldn't find any of his DNA on her body 2:20:15 and also they couldn't determine the cause of her death so technically he was dismissed and thankfully one year later 2:20:21 after being appealed joju was retried on the murder of Lucy Blackman where he was finally found guilty but seriously this 2:20:27 should have happened the first time around at least to me but this case highlights the sure incompetence of Japan's former police force I know in 2:20:34 recent years they've reformed to become more compassionate and responsive but back then they really didn't care about their 2:20:40 tourists a few side notes from this case but while joji was under trial and not yet found guilty he offered Lucy's 2:20:46 mother condolence money formally requesting her to stop the trial for 400 2:20:52 £150,000 understandably she refused but only days later her ex-husband which is Lucy's father took the money 2:20:59 instead obviously this caused a massive Rift in the family and I'll let you be the judge on how moral this was to his 2:21:05 own daughter Jo's case is unique he truly is a deviant and a monster to the 2:21:10 highest degree he assaulted not one but hundreds of women and technically became a killer through his own Ventures and 2:21:18 despite over 99% of Japan's murderers conf confessing once Court he remains as part of the 1 perent who refuses to 2:21:24 accept responsibility and blame joji abara is a chronic liar who denies any accountability and obviously he is used 2:21:31 to getting everything he desires who knows how many more women he would have terrorized if it wasn't for the tenacity 2:21:37 and strong will of Lucy's family and friends all of which even 22 years later 2:21:42 continued to live their lives with a hole in their heart and so concludes the case of Jo abara the crazy thing is it Outro 2:21:49 feels like her recorded that Video Only Yesterday When actually that was the one to pull me over 1 million subscribers 2:21:55 anyway folks I hope you enjoyed this
