her which 0:10 sadly ended in Devastation for Hannah 0:13 had been murdered in the aftermath a 0:16 combination of surveillance footage and 0:18 DNA analysis was used to identify her 0:20 killer and what they found was far 0:23 beyond their expectations because this 0:26 was not his first time or even his 0:29 second so with all of the pieces finally 0:32 put together who was this monster hiding 0:35 in the shadows what did he do to Hannah 0:37 Graham who were his other victims and 0:40 how would all of them ultimately miss 0:42 getting full 0:44 Justice welcome back to Coffee House 0:46 welcome to Charlottesville Hannah Graham's Disappearance 3:43 Virginia folks also known by locals as 3:46 seille Charlottesville was the home of 3:48 two US presidents Thomas Jefferson and 3:51 James Monroe with a population of around 3:54 45,000 people Charlottesville is a city 3:57 with plenty to do and without the hustle 3:59 and bust of some larger cities however 4:02 don't let its small footprint fall you 4:04 it is home to five colleges and 4:06 universities which help bolster the 4:08 local economy now despite the high 4:10 number of students the city does also 4:13 unfortunately experience a relatively 4:15 high crime rate in fact when taken as a 4:18 whole Charlottesville ranks in the top 4:20 3% of highest crimer rate communities 4:22 throughout the entire State and sadly 4:25 this story speaks volumes about that 4:28 figure 4:30 on Friday September the 12th 2014 4:33 18-year-old college student Hannah 4:35 Graham was on a night out with her 4:37 friends and fellow students Hannah who 4:40 was born on February the 25th 1996 in 4:43 barkshire England was the daughter of 4:45 proud parents Sue and John the family 4:48 moved to Charlottesville Virginia when 4:50 she was just a young child and by the 4:52 year 2014 she had grown to be a popular 4:55 student at the University who excelled 4:58 in sports most specific specifically 5:00 softball at around 7:00 p.m. that night 5:03 Hannah and her friends had been drinking 5:04 together at a local restaurant named the 5:07 Fig with them being students they were 5:09 out to have a good time together and so 5:12 quite understandably the drinks were 5:13 flowing and so after dinner and a few 5:16 more they went on to a nearby party with 5:19 several other students the drinks were 5:21 still flowing by midnight which was 5:23 around the time that Hannah began to 5:25 feel sick from all of the alcohol as a 5:27 result she had become quite drunk and so 5:30 she told all of her friends that she 5:32 wanted to go home now although her 5:34 friends offered to walk her home Hannah 5:36 declined them and said that she was fine 5:38 to do it alone the walk back wasn't very 5:40 far anyway and she was rather 5:42 comfortable in her environment none of 5:44 her friends realized this but this was 5:46 actually the last time they would ever 5:48 see her alive again and after messaging 5:51 all of them at 1:30 in the morning they 5:53 would never hear from her again either 5:55 now at first no one was any wiser but 5:58 when Hannah failed to attend a planned 5:59 event event the next day her friends 6:01 began to worry soon enough they 6:03 contacted the police and reported her as 6:05 missing with her absence so unusual this 6:08 investigation quickly became quite 6:10 extensive and emotional and as those 6:12 hours passed by her community became 6:15 more and more worried so who precisely 6:18 was Hannah and why was everyone so 6:20 concerned over her 6:22 safety when law enforcement began to 6:25 look into her disappearance and 6:26 therefore tried to determine where she 6:28 might have gone one of the first things 6:30 that they turned to was surveillance 6:32 footage now with this being a university 6:35 the campus was littered with hundreds of 6:37 security cameras and so it is no 6:40 surprise to learn that there was a lot 6:42 of footage to go through with dozens of 6:45 officers hundreds of surveillance 6:46 cameras and many public volunteers and 6:49 statements the authorities were able to 6:51 rapidly establish a comprehensive 6:53 timeline beginning at around 11:50 p.m. 6:56 on Friday the 12th Hannah's friends 6:58 watched to leave the party at Camden 7:00 Plaza Apartments on 14th Street 7:02 Northwest at around 45 minutes past 7:05 midnight which was 55 minutes after 7:08 leaving the party she is captured here 7:10 on a camera outside McGrady's Pub while 7:13 here she can be seen wearing the same 7:15 clothes and possibly looking a little 7:18 intoxicated it is also worth mentioning 7:20 that she seems to stumble and look 7:22 around as if she is searching for 7:24 something 10 minutes later at 55 minutes 7:27 past midnight she is briefly seen on the 7:29 C camera at a Shell gas station located 7:31 on Preston Avenue it is noted that this 7:34 time she was seen running on the 7:36 pavement in the back ground and although 7:38 we don't know why she was running there 7:41 is no indication or suggestion that she 7:43 was being chased or followed at this 7:45 point in time Witnesses report seeing 7:47 her shortly after this in a downtown 7:50 mall before continuing eastwards and 7:52 then at 106 a.m. she was again seen 7:55 outside Sal's calf at the 42nd mark it 7:59 is also worth noting here that shortly 8:01 before this moment a man with dreadlocks 8:03 can be seen on the near side of the 8:05 camera walking from left to right and 8:08 then a few seconds later he is seen 8:11 following Hannah back the other way 2 8:13 minutes later at 108 a.m. she is seen on 8:16 tules Jeweler's camera it is rather hard 8:19 to pick her out of this shot as it is 8:21 mainly focused on the interior however 8:24 it did allow authorities to set their 8:26 timeline for this area and know that she 8:28 was in that location 8:29 at that time 12 minutes later at 1:20 8:33 a.m. Hannah messaged her friends to say 8:35 that she was lost she also mentioned 8:37 that she was near Westland Street and 8:39 Northwest Street and that furthermore 8:42 she was heading to another party but 8:45 this would be the last time that anyone 8:46 heard from Hannah and as for that party 8:49 she would never make it there with so 8:51 much information at hand detectives had 8:53 a lot to work with but sometimes that 8:55 can be both a blessing and a curse 8:57 because these details made her disa 8:59 appearance extremely concerning 9:02 especially when they realized that she 9:03 was being followed by an unknown man 9:05 with this in mind several Hile search 9:08 operations to find Hannah began with 9:10 hundreds of professionals and volunteers 9:12 helping unsurprisingly but that man who 9:14 has seen following Hannah became an 9:16 investigation in itself and on September 9:18 the 19th the authorities described him 9:21 as a person of interest interestingly 9:23 they already knew who he was in fact 9:25 they searched his house that very same 9:27 day but as for the man himself 9:29 he was nowhere to be found detectives 9:32 would soon reveal that he was seen 9:33 exiting a bar with Hannah and another 9:36 witness would declare that apparently he 9:38 saw both of them standing next to a car 9:40 arguing and although officers were quite 9:43 strategic in keeping the suspect unnamed 9:45 that would change very very soon the Jesse Matthews 9:48 very next day he appeared at a police 9:50 station and identified himself as Jesse 9:53 Matthews however it appears that he 9:55 suddenly changed his mind because only a 9:58 few seconds later he ran back to his car 10:01 and then left the scene at speed now 10:04 this resulted in him having an 10:05 additional open charge of reckless 10:07 driving and furthermore officers were 10:10 now actively seeking to find him it is 10:12 no surprise that only 2 days later they 10:15 released his full name to the public 10:17 also known as LJ Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr 10:21 was a 32-year-old man standing at 6 ft 10:24 and 2 in and unfortunately he also had 10:28 quite the Checker passed now despite 10:31 this Jesse was actually a nursing 10:33 assistant at the university hospital and 10:36 also drove a taxi By Night both of these 10:39 lines of work involved him interacting 10:41 with many of the area students so you 10:44 would have thought that Jesse would have 10:45 been extensively background checked 10:47 before being given either of these roles 10:50 to recap the situation here officers 10:53 determined that he encountered Hannah at 10:54 Sal's Cafe shortly before she messaged 10:57 her friends that she was lost after this 11:00 moment Witnesses reported them arguing 11:02 in front of a car that matched his 11:04 vehicle's description which quite 11:06 specifically was a very distinctive 11:09 orange-colored Chrysler Sebring and 11:11 what's worse it appeared to others that 11:13 she refused to get inside it was stated 11:16 that after opening the front door for 11:18 her to get in a witness heard her saying 11:21 I'm not getting in that car with you 11:23 what is it stolen he was then spotted 11:25 walking with his arm over Hannah's 11:27 shoulder however when they parted ways 11:30 he was seen to pause before then 11:32 following on after her no doubt Jesse 11:35 felt guilty for Hannah's disappearance 11:37 because now he was nowhere to be found 11:40 and with his absence extending several 11:42 days officers were becoming more 11:45 suspicious by the hour Jesse was 11:47 eventually tracked down one week later 11:50 but it was nowhere near the university 11:52 in fact he was all the way over in 11:55 Galveston Texas now after his relatively 11:58 short-lived Escape Jesse was charged 12:00 with abduction with the intent to defile 12:02 an unusual and specific charge that 12:05 rather conveniently comes with the 12:07 requirement to have his DNA taken and 12:09 sampled an important detail that would 12:12 cause more commotion than anyone would 12:14 have ever initially imagined although 12:17 Jesse had already been arrested it is no 12:20 surprise that he remained tight lipped 12:21 on Hannah's disappearance instead trying 12:24 to claim that he had nothing to do with 12:26 the situation meanwhile dozens of 12:28 searchers continued AC cross the local 12:30 area and as findings remained slim and 12:33 more information became available the 12:35 search area expanded into the 12:37 surrounding counties and Countryside 12:40 with no sign of Hannah it soon became 12:42 evident that if she was still in the 12:44 county she would likely be in its more 12:46 rural areas comparatively although the 12:49 city is 10 square miles in size it is 12:52 surrounded by more than 700 square miles 12:55 of Countryside and so more and more 12:57 searches were conducted over for this 12:59 ever broadening area with the initial 13:01 checks on September the 20th followed by 13:04 additional police searches on September 13:06 the 25th and 26th in addition to this 13:09 police and media sources continuously 13:12 broadcasted information about Hannah 13:14 they appealed for anyone with any 13:16 information to come forward eventually 13:19 encouraging those further afar and 13:21 outside of city limits to check their 13:23 properties for any signs and sadly with 13:26 this information on October the 18th 13:29 2014 which was 5 weeks after her 13:32 disappearance human remains were 13:34 discovered in albal County a body had 13:37 been found in a creek bed on the land of 13:39 an abandoned property deep inside a 13:42 heavily wooded area forensic officers 13:44 would also discover the same top and 13:46 pair of jeans that she hadd been wearing 13:48 on the night she disappeared the 13:50 property was just off old Lynchberg Road 13:54 a road that runs deep into rural 13:56 territory and its desolate location led 13:58 into investigators to believe that 14:00 whoever had taken her there must have 14:03 been intimately familiar with the 14:06 area by the time the authorities had 14:08 found the body decomposition had already 14:11 heavily set in making it almost 14:13 impossible to accurately determine the 14:15 cause of death however around one week 14:17 after the discovery the authorities were 14:19 able to confirm that the body did in 14:22 fact belong to Hannah gram officially 14:24 marking the end of their search 14:25 operation they also confirmed that she 14:28 had very likely died from homicide 14:30 though for now they couldn't determine 14:32 who by how or why now despite this The 14:35 Examiner did assume that due to lack of 14:37 any major bones being broken apart from 14:39 one in the nose Hannah likely died from 14:41 strangulation or Suffocation and that is 14:44 not all the authorities found out they 14:46 would also realize that Jesse's mother 14:48 lived locally in the area meaning that 14:51 Jesse likely had a very good 14:53 understanding of the terrain we have 14:54 some breaking news to report to you 14:56 right now the medical examiner's office 14:58 of for for the state has now confirmed 15:00 that the remains discovered in abber 15:02 Marl County on October 18th are indeed 15:05 those of 18-year-old Hannah Graham of 15:08 Fairfax Virginia as you remember Hannah 15:10 Graham is the student who went missing 15:12 from UVA about a month or so ago there 15:15 was a massive search uh to try and find 15:17 her and uh her remains were found 15:20 October 18th and the medical examiner 15:22 has confirmed those remains are indeed 15:24 those of Hannah Graham a man named Jesse 15:27 Matthew has been charged with her 15:29 abduction he remains in custody right 15:31 now in Charlottesville WJ has a crew on 15:35 the way to Charlottesville we will have 15:36 a complete story uh for you on this 15:39 later tonight once again Hannah Graham 15:41 from Fairfax County Virginia uh 15:44 discovered October 18th remains have 15:46 positively been identified by the 15:48 medical examiner's office and we will 15:49 keep you updated on this breaking story 15:52 by the way the uh authorities in 15:54 Charlottesville uh have expressed 15:57 prayers going out to the uh Graham 15:59 family and uh her family has now asked 16:02 that the public respect their privacy 16:04 during this time assumptions aside it 16:07 wouldn't take long for DNA analysis to 16:09 reveal the Ugly Truth samples taken from 16:12 Jesse's car confirmed that at some point 16:14 in time Hannah Graham had entered his 16:16 vehicle while she was still alive and 16:19 coupled with witness testimonies this 16:21 put Jesse in very hot water but that was 16:24 not all the DNA analysis would on Earth 16:27 in fact many Dark Secret ran far beyond 16:30 this 16:31 story with Jesse's DNA now in the system Morgan Harrington 16:35 they were able to crash it against every 16:37 other case in the area and soon enough a 16:40 positive match was made between his DNA 16:43 and DNA found at a crime scene back in 16:45 the year 2009 only this one was never 16:49 solved 5 years prior 19-year-old Morgan 16:52 Harrington's disappearance gripped the 16:54 area's attention now Morgan was a 16:56 student from a nearby University and she 16:59 too vanished under similar circumstances 17:03 on the night of her disappearance Morgan 17:05 had been attending a Metallica concert 17:07 with friends the evening between them 17:09 was well underway when she stepped out 17:11 to the bathroom only Morgan never 17:14 returned after that concerned for her 17:16 safety her friends contacted her by 17:19 phone Morgan explained that she had 17:21 walked out of the venue but was no 17:23 longer allowed back in by security she 17:25 then told her friends not to worry and 17:27 that they should carry on with their 17:29 night her friends highlighted that they 17:31 still had her keys with them inside of 17:33 the venue but Morgan didn't seem too 17:35 bothered instead she said that she was 17:38 fine and that she could make her own way 17:40 back home however once the concert was 17:43 over no one could reach Morgan her phone 17:45 appeared to be switched off and all 17:47 calls were going straight to voicemail 17:50 things would only get worse after this 17:52 when her friends returned to the 17:54 apartment they were staying in they then 17:56 realized that she wasn't with her 17:57 roommates either and so it is no 18:00 surprise that the next thing they did 18:02 was report her as missing to the 18:04 authorities and tragically that was the 18:06 last time they would ever hear from 18:08 Morgan and despite a very extensive 18:10 search operation she was never found 18:13 alive now the police would actually find 18:15 her purse and even her phone early on in 18:17 the investigation but sadly those hopes 18:21 were shortlived now several witnesses 18:23 did come forward to report seeing her in 18:25 the hours after her disappearance where 18:27 some remember seeing her leave the venue 18:29 alone others recall seeing her walking 18:31 along the road later that night but 18:34 despite all of these sightings no one 18:36 knew where she went and then one month 18:38 later the shirt that Morgan wore that 18:40 night was suddenly found in a bushy area 18:43 outside of the University several hairs 18:45 found on the shirt were analyzed and 18:47 ultimately deemed to belong to both 18:49 Morgan and an unknown individual and of 18:52 course 4 years later that unknown person 18:55 would turn out to be Jesse sadly despite 18:59 hundreds of hours of surveillance 19:00 footage an extensive search operation 19:03 and even a $100,000 reward added by 19:06 Metallica themselves there was no sign 19:09 of Morgan Morgan's case achieved 19:11 widespread attention in fact her 19:13 disappearance provoked fear that maybe a 19:16 serial killer might be living in 19:18 Virginia but despite the notoriety of 19:21 this case and almost 2 months of 19:23 searching efforts unfortunately were 19:25 ultimately called off the friends and 19:28 family of Morgan remained an agonizing 19:30 limbo for a while longer but in January 19:32 of 2010 a farmer would stumble across a 19:36 horrifying discovery that being the 19:38 skeletal remains of Morgan an autopsy 19:41 conducted on her body would conclude a 19:43 few noteworthy observations it was noted 19:47 that the victim had suffered from Fairly 19:49 substantial trauma with multiple bones 19:51 in the face being broken given what we 19:53 know about Jesse it is no surprise to 19:56 learn that her body was recovered less 19:58 than 5 miles away from the place where 20:00 Hannah was found 4 years later Morgan's 20:03 case aside Jesse's grubby handprints Convicting a Killer 20:05 were found elsewhere too his DNA 20:08 positively matched another crime scene 20:10 dated back to the Year 2005 where an 20:13 unknown as salent had attempted to 20:15 sexually assault another young woman in 20:17 addition to these three crimes he was 20:19 linked to another sexual crime in 20:21 Fairfax in 2012 making it the fourth 20:24 crime scene that his DNA was attached to 20:27 tragically that was not the end of it 20:29 because other stories were now beginning 20:31 to connect to his despicable profile too 20:34 one decade prior in the year 2002 Jesse 20:37 was also suspected of sexual assault on 20:40 another student he had been attending 20:42 Liberty University for 3 years at the 20:44 time when he suddenly was accused of 20:46 assault lucky for him but not for anyone 20:49 else the case was eventually dropped 20:52 when the victim declined to move forward 20:54 Jesse left University shortly after 20:57 these allegations where he transferred 20:59 to Christopher Newport University and 21:01 played for the football team and where 21:03 once again he was accused of sexual 21:06 assault on campus this case was also 21:09 dropped where Jesse simply dropped out 21:11 of school and so with his DNA now in the 21:14 database and a fine lens placed over 21:17 this Monster's Reckless Behavior the 21:19 prosecution was left with four crime 21:21 scenes and six disgusting 21:24 stories so moving into the legal 21:26 proceedings of this case when Jesse 21:28 appeared in court to face his charges a 21:30 plea Baron had already been arranged 21:33 therefore sparing him the death penalty 21:35 and what is worse an Alfred plea was 21:37 offered to Jesse meaning he didn't have 21:39 to admit guilt to murdering Hannah or 21:41 Morgan in fact all he had to do was sign 21:43 a statement stating that he understood 21:45 that the prosecution likely had enough 21:47 evidence to convict him now Alfred pleas 21:50 are sometimes worthwhile but definitely 21:52 not in this situation and in a way took 21:55 some of the Justice away from Hannah's 21:56 and Morgan's families I mean if you 21:58 think about it it was basically a deal 22:01 on a sentence and furthermore took some 22:03 of that accountability away anyway he 22:05 would eventually agree to the Alfred 22:07 plea in exchange for lifelong 22:08 imprisonment and still to this day the 22:11 exact cause of death to Hannah and 22:13 Morgan remains unproven Jesse's 22:15 admission to homicide resulted in four 22:17 consecutive life sentences without the 22:19 possibility for parole the capital 22:21 murder charge was dropped in exchange 22:23 for his guilty plea solidified on March 22:26 the 2nd 2016 when he signed a 22:28 comprehensive 21-page statement 22:31 detailing his involvement in Hannah's 22:33 fate currently Jesse serves his sentence 22:35 in the high security Red Onion supermax 22:38 prison in Virginia which is renowned for 22:40 its remote location and minimal Escape 22:43 opportunities in 2019 he was diagnosed 22:47 with stage 4 colon cancer and 22:49 transferred to Sussex state prison near 22:51 Richmond for treatment naturally the 22:54 media were rather quick to stir the pot 22:56 and asked Morgan's mother for comment 22:59 and this is what she had to 23:02 say I have never been directing my 23:06 energies in in the rear view mirror and 23:08 towards punishment and retribution and 23:11 Jill Harrington says that hasn't changed 23:14 even with news that Jesse Matthew the 23:16 man who murdered her 20-year-old 23:18 daughter Morgan in 2009 has been 23:20 diagnosed with cancer so I'm not fist 23:24 bumping and and happy that uh he has a 23:27 challenging 23:28 diagnosis um he received seven life 23:31 sentences for his crimes and if that 23:34 life is to be shorter than we expected I 23:39 am fine also with that Harrington says 23:41 the Legacy being built through help save 23:43 the next girl the nonprofit formed in 23:45 Morgan's honor continues to be her 23:48 family's focus and not a focus on 23:50 Matthew's fate once he was 23:53 stopped whatever Justice came forth I 23:57 was very um um comfortable with and you 24:01 know perhaps this is his Destiny and his 24:03 karma whatever his fate may be May the 24:06 rest of it be behind bars and fraught 24:08 with 24:09 regret Although our story today began 24:12 with Hannah Graham we are finished with 24:14 another victim Morgan Harrington both 24:16 women were young with their entire lives 24:19 ahead of them and it's a tragedy that 24:21 both are now gone taken by a man who 24:23 held no regard for their worth Hannah 24:26 Graham was 18 years old when she had 24:28 just started a second year of study and 24:31 when she was cruy taken from the world 24:34 she embraced life in the US with 24:36 enthusiasm and was described as 24:38 optimistic and happy bright and 24:40 personable trusting and extremely loyal 24:43 to her friends without prejudice she had 24:46 great empathy enjoyed helping others and 24:48 was delighted to contribute to her 24:51 communities Hannah hoped to pursue a 24:53 career in global public health and 24:55 intended to apply to a special program 24:58 in this field at UVA she had enormous 25:00 potential and the world will miss the 25:02 great things that she would have 25:04 achieved and contributed Morgan was a 25:07 20-year-old Virginia Tech student in her 25:09 third year of completing her education 25:11 degree when she took the night off to 25:13 hang out with her friends and attend a 25:15 Metallica concert she is remembered as a 25:18 shiny loving beautiful original she was 25:21 an avid music fan a champion of 25:23 children's rights and planned a career 25:25 in education and her parents say that 25:27 the world has lost lost its best hugger 25:29 to this day she is remembered and 25:31 mourned by all who knew her since her 25:34 death her parents have founded a charity 25:36 in her memory named help save the next 25:38 girl meanwhile Hannah's parents have 25:40 established several Charities and 25:42 memorials in her name that seek to 25:44 remember her for who she was and the 25:46 good she brought into the world there is 25:49 also a scholarship in her name and a 25:51 memorial that stands to this day at the 25:53 University she attended there is no 25:56 amount of Justice in the world that will 25:58 help make these broken families feel 26:00 whole again and no amount of money or 26:02 words will make up what was taken from 26:05 them during those terribly dark days all 26:08 we can hope and do is maintain the 26:10 memories of these young women as they 26:12 were in their 26:16 lives it's another one of those stories 26:18 where it's like picking apart a ball of 26:20 yarn and not realizing how long that 26:22 string goes unfortunately we thought 26:24 that maybe Hannah was the only victim to 26:26 Jesse but as we know now he had 26:29 terrorized plenty of other women in the 26:31 past at least now he is thankfully off 26:34 the streets and behind bars for life but 26:36 it did come at the cost of two murders 26:39 and several other victims whatever they Outro 26:41 are share your thoughts in the comment 26:42 section down below and thank you so much 26:44 for making it this far in the video I 26:46 really
