0:00 in the year 2003 South Korea was gripped 0:03 by a newly emerging serial killer it 0:05 would take almost 1 year to track him 0:07 down but by then he had murdered more 0:10 than 20 victims and even escaped from 0:12 prison so who is you young CH what were 0:16 the motives behind his many murders and 0:18 what happened in his life to create such 0:20 a sick and twisted monster in this video 0:23 we will explore his morbid history and 0:26 how he would become one of South Korea's 0:28 most feared men 0:31 welcome back to Coffee House crime folks 0:33 my name is Adrien and today we're 0:35 looking at a case that gripped South 0:37 Korea like no other in this video we're 0:40 looking at The Morbid world of you young 0:42 CH and how his terrible actions led him 0:44 to achieve one of the highest body 0:46 counts this channel has ever seen by the 0:48 way if you like videos like this then 0:50 please consider subscribing as it does 0:51 really help me out otherwise grab 0:54 yourself a cup of coffee and let's 0:55 caffeinate while we investigate this is 0:58 the case of you young ch 1:00 [Music] 1:07 welcome back to South Korea folks also 1:10 known as the land of the morning calm 1:12 although we have explored this country 1:14 before it is important to highlight that 1:17 much like Japan South Korea is an 1:19 extremely safe place to be now although 1:22 it's not relatively as safe as 1:23 Switzerland Norway or Japan it does rank 1:26 much higher in safety standards than 1:28 many Western countries including cluding 1:30 France or the USA it is crucial to 1:32 specify that when discussing Korea we 1:34 are of course referring to South Korea 1:36 for rather obvious reasons its northern 1:39 brother is the most isolated secretive 1:41 and militarized country in the world so 1:44 it's rather unlikely that we're going to 1:46 hear a True Crime Story from them 1:48 anytime soon moving back to its brighter 1:50 and more friendly neighbor South Korea 1:52 boasts a prosperous economy with 1:54 stunning Landscapes mountains Plains and 1:57 rice paddies to boot and let's not 1:59 forget about Korean cuisine a delightful 2:02 blend of spicy and sweet flavors that 2:04 cater to all paletts across the globe 2:06 heads up but I've got a very soft spot 2:08 for Korean barbecue it's quite a nice 2:10 social dining experience where you cook 2:12 raw meat and vegetables together and 2:14 enjoy various dishes and condiments at 2:16 your own pace food deide because 2:19 honestly I could talk about that all day 2:21 let's delve into the vibrant capital 2:23 city of South Korea named Soul by the 2:25 way did you know that Soul has a 2:27 thriving specialty coffee scene as a of 2:30 the Year 2023 the South Korean coffee 2:32 Market has reached record levels it is 2:35 estimated that there are now over 75,000 2:38 coffee shops across the country which by 2:40 the way is the equivalent of one Cafe 2:42 Per 700 people now although this country 2:45 is known for its Lively atmosphere 2:47 friendly locals and eclectic Coffee 2:49 Culture the case we're looking at today 2:51 is sadly far from 2:55 upbeat our story today begins two 2:58 decades ago in the year 20 3 and it's 3:01 probably worth saying that although this 3:02 is the first officially recorded event 3:05 it is not necessarily the beginning on 3:07 the morning of September the 24th 2003 3:11 an eerie silence ran through the fog 3:13 topped rice paddies and into the 3:14 bustling City for most today was like 3:18 any other day but for the faculty staff 3:20 of Soul University something seemed a 3:24 Miss 74-year-old Professor Le Yoku 3:27 failed to show up to work that morning 3:29 while his absence perplexed his 3:31 colleagues and students nothing seemed 3:33 to be done about it in the first couple 3:35 days but as the days Drew by that 3:38 feeling of Wonder turned into concern 3:40 his workplace couldn't get hold of him 3:42 and with the days piling up many grew 3:45 worried for his own safety as many of 3:47 these stories begin the authorities were 3:49 called for a wellness check and 3:52 unfortunately after arriving at his 3:54 residence they were met with a sad and 3:57 gruesome scene officers wouldn't find 3:59 one but two bodies leoku and his wife 4:02 Lee yonak were both found inside the 4:05 property among a very messy and violent 4:07 crime scene forensics determined that 4:10 although he had been stabbed in the neck 4:12 this wasn't actually the cause of his 4:13 death he had suffered blunt force traum 4:15 across his head and multiple parts of 4:18 his body now statistically speaking 4:20 homicide is quite rare for elderly 4:22 people in their 70s and to add to this 4:25 both of these people were quite 4:26 well-liked in the neighborhood and had 4:28 no enemies and and the motive was just 4:31 as perplexing with Dio Su being a 4:33 professor it was quite obvious to say 4:35 that the Lee family were relatively 4:37 wealthy but with all valuables remaining 4:39 in the property this clearly wasn't 4:41 about the money I mean whoever the 4:43 killer was they even left a case filled 4:45 to the brim with jewelry in the bedroom 4:47 so this clearly wasn't with intention 4:50 for profit in cases like this with no 4:52 obvious motive the killer almost always 4:54 knows the victims however upon further 4:57 investigation officers realized that all 5:00 family and friends had an alibi and so 5:02 with no obvious suspects officers began 5:04 to dig deeper into the 5:09 investigation just as detectives began 5:11 to tuck into this case another startling 5:14 Revelation came only two weeks later on 5:16 October the 9th another incident was 5:19 reported to the authorities the home of 5:21 another family in Soul had been invaded 5:24 and upon entering the property officers 5:26 found three bodies Kang Yun son an 5:30 85-year-old wealthy woman alongside her 5:32 60-year-old daughter-in-law and her 5:34 35-year-old handicapped son had all been 5:37 murdered it was noted that this home was 5:40 occupied by three vulnerable individuals 5:43 making them easy targets for their 5:45 assant once again it was a violent and 5:48 bloody scene and the smell of blood was 5:51 thick in the air officers found the 5:54 grandmother's body in the downstairs 5:56 bathroom and after ascending the blood 5:58 covered staircase they found the other 6:00 two forensic investigators observed that 6:03 all had suffered a very violent death 6:06 which unfortunately was a horrific way 6:08 for the husband of the grandmother to 6:10 find his family after investigating the 6:13 crime scene and all possible suspects 6:16 detectives once again found no leads the 6:19 husband who came home from work to find 6:21 his wife daughter and Grandson murdered 6:24 was quite understandably Beyond 6:26 devastated he told the officers that he 6:28 couldn't think of anyone who would want 6:30 to do this to his family and apparently 6:33 in Desperate grief he even screamed at 6:35 the family's fish tank to tell the fish 6:38 did you see who did it tell me you know 6:40 who did sadly this second murder scene 6:43 was only the beginning of a series of 6:46 patterned attacks and only one week 6:48 later yet another similar scene would 6:50 unfold in the soul area that was when 6:53 60-year-old Yu Jun he was found by her 6:56 son in the afternoon it was immediately 6:58 clear that she was near death after 7:00 being savagely beaten with what 7:02 authorities could only describe as a 7:04 large hammer and although she was alive 7:06 when her son arrived she sadly passed 7:08 away only 30 minutes later one month 7:11 later another elderly wealthy man was 7:14 found dead in his home 87-year-old Kim 7:17 Jong suuk was found deceased alongside 7:20 his housekeeper that being 53-year-old 7:22 Bei he both of them had been bludgeoned 7:25 to death with a hammer and according to 7:27 the blood found at the crime scene they 7:29 were killed as they slept in their beds 7:32 what was strange about this time is that 7:34 the house had also been set on fire in 7:37 an act of arson supposedly and most 7:39 likely to destroy any evidence left 7:42 behind and unfortunately the killer was 7:44 successful too the authorities found no 7:47 substantial clues or leads and the only 7:50 evidence Left Behind were a few bloody 7:53 Footprints it became clear that whoever 7:55 was behind this long streak of brutal 7:57 murders was specific spefically 7:59 targeting wealthy elderly people in the 8:04 city to have five individual homicide 8:07 incidents happened in such a short time 8:09 frame was certainly concerning for the 8:11 authorities and it definitely kept the 8:13 public on their toes what is worse is 8:16 that nobody knew if the killer would 8:17 strike again they didn't know if this 8:19 was an isolated series of events or if 8:22 he would keep on going until he was 8:24 caught but at the turn of the New Year 8:26 Soul's brand new serial killer would all 8:28 of a sudden stop and that was for very 8:30 good reason because it was around this 8:32 time frame that officers found one small 8:35 but crucial piece of evidence and that 8:37 was surveillance footage with this 8:39 happening in the year 2003 surveillance 8:42 cameras were still relatively rare in 8:43 Soul however the owner to a nearby 8:46 business installed a camera and found 8:48 something very interesting on the night 8:50 of a murder the surveillance camera 8:52 captured this image of a man coming from 8:54 the direction of the crime scene and 8:57 while that in itself was not alarming to 8:59 to the detectives it became far more 9:01 significant to the investigation when 9:04 one of the murdered family members 9:05 claimed that his jacket belonged to the 9:08 victim the decision to release this 9:10 image to the public was not considered 9:12 lightly but in the end officers decided 9:15 that they would have more success in 9:16 finding their killer if people knew 9:19 about it they also offered a huge 1 9:21 million1 reward for any information that 9:24 led to the arrest of this killer the 9:26 equivalent of 9:27 $37,000 or3 9:29 ,000 now although the news was sure to 9:32 stop the killer for a short while he 9:34 would eventually return at the turn of 9:36 the new year but this time his targets 9:38 were the complete opposite of his 9:40 previous victims leading many to believe 9:42 that maybe Soul was experiencing two 9:45 separate serial 9:48 killers starting in February of 2004 9:51 Soul found itself trapped in a series of 9:53 chilling disappearances but instead of 9:56 elderly people being murdered in their 9:57 own homes it was now young women 10:00 Vanishing across the city it was 1 month 10:02 later in March of 2004 that one of those 10:05 women's bodies was discovered the 10:08 remains of 23-year-old Quan Jin he were 10:11 found along a trail near soang 10:13 University what was somewhat puzzling to 10:15 officers is that her remains were not 10:17 actually complete her body had been 10:19 dismembered into several smaller pieces 10:22 with what seemingly seemed to be 10:24 multiple chunks of Flesh absent from her 10:26 body jinhe was a young woman working in 10:29 Soul's Redlight district and sadly as is 10:32 often the case for sex workers she 10:34 didn't have the best support network 10:36 around her engaging in night workk often 10:39 comes with a substantial risk to one's 10:41 safety and unfortunately it often comes 10:44 as no surprise when sex workers 10:46 disappear many of these women are often 10:49 faced with financial hardship are 10:50 coerced into the profession out of 10:52 necessity or alternatively are abducted 10:55 under false pretenses such as innocent 10:58 sounding job offers and although 11:00 prostitution was technically illegal in 11:02 Soul at the time corrupt police officers 11:05 would often turn a Blind Eye in fact 11:07 some of those officers would even take 11:09 bribes and form working relationships 11:12 with many of the working women's pimps 11:14 unfortunately our mysterious serial 11:17 killer realized this was a prime 11:19 Community to Target slowly over time 11:22 many within the red light district began 11:24 to notice that more and more women were 11:27 disappearing and by July of that year 11:29 several sex workers were confirmed to 11:32 have vanished to be more precise between 11:34 April and July of 2004 nine women 11:37 disappeared from the mapu area of Saul 11:40 it was also noted that all of them had 11:42 seemingly disappeared overnight usually 11:45 after accepting a 11:47 job now most of these jobs involved the 11:50 escorts going to a pre-arranged location 11:52 such as a home or a hotel which in 11:55 general is much safer than going to the 11:57 red light district and perhaps no 11:59 surprise whatsoever but this would 12:01 eventually be the beginning to our 12:02 serial killer downfall it was in July of 12:05 2004 that one of those local brothel 12:08 received an atome request for an escort 12:10 now this brothel already experienced one 12:13 of their escorts to disappear a few 12:14 weeks prior one who still hadn't 12:17 returned and so with that in mind they 12:20 were extra careful with the women that 12:21 they had left and that is when they 12:23 realized that this request came from the 12:25 same phone number used for the escort 12:27 that had already vanished 12:29 now with pimps and covert police 12:31 officers having regular contact with 12:33 each other this was the perfect 12:35 opportunity for them to collaborate and 12:37 bring whoever this person was down and 12:39 so at 2 a.m. on July the 15th 2004 that 12:43 call was made to the authorities and 12:45 this would Mark the beginning to an 12:47 interesting operation detectives had no 12:49 idea what to expect and so they 12:52 organized a typical sting operation 12:54 working with the informant and one of 12:56 his local call girls and so after 12:59 setting the scene with a rigged Park and 13:01 a squad nearby they waited with baited 13:04 breath for their suspect to finally 13:06 arrive and in the early morning hours 13:09 that is when he appeared out of the 13:11 darkness it became immediately apparent 13:13 that whoever this suspect was he did 13:16 have something to hide that's because 13:18 when confronted by officers the man 13:20 suddenly went berserk in fact he 13:23 resisted his arrest so violently that it 13:25 took five officers to subdue him what is 13:28 strange is that immediately after being 13:30 pinned to the ground officers found him 13:32 to be choking on something in his mouth 13:35 they soon realized that he had chewed up 13:37 the co girl's flyer and was now trying 13:39 to swallow it in a desperate effort to 13:42 destroy the evidence no surprise he was 13:44 apprehended and then arrested and soon 13:47 after being transferred to the station 13:49 the Frantic man was identified to be 13:51 32-year-old you young CH who the chief 13:54 officer noted at the time was an average 13:57 to good-looking man and a far cry from 13:59 the stereotypical serial killer now we 14:02 have heard of this before in other 14:04 countries but Korean law states that you 14:06 may only hold a suspect for up to 48 14:09 hours without evidence or then be forced 14:11 to let them go so the game was on for 14:14 detectives to find some sort of evidence 14:16 to link him conveniently he had already 14:19 proven to have a rather violent temper 14:21 upon arrest and so with this information 14:24 at hand the interrogators planned to use 14:26 this to their advantage surprisingly he 14:29 proved to be arrogant and even proud in 14:32 his seat telling the officers that he 14:34 was the one in charge and they had no 14:36 control whatsoever perhaps a sign of 14:38 difference in culture and modern day 14:40 times but one of the officers then 14:42 slapped him on the back of his head 14:44 which only seemed to anger young CH even 14:46 further excerpts from the interview show 14:49 that the officers then taunted him 14:51 saying there is no way you could have 14:52 killed anyone I can tell you don't have 14:55 the stomach for it young CH seeed in a 14:58 seat before for then asking for a piece 15:00 of paper he then began to draw lines on 15:03 the paper like the markings found on a 15:06 prison wall after some time he then 15:08 stopped at 30 lines that is when he said 15:12 that is how many people I have killed I 15:14 killed those four old bags 15:17 too how times have changed nowadays it 15:20 can take months to crack a serial killer 15:22 back then all you had to do is slap them 15:24 around the back of the head and they 15:25 tell you everything being serious though 15:27 his confession did take many officers by 15:30 surprise I mean a few of them wondered 15:32 if he was perhaps Behind These escorts 15:35 disappearing but no one expected him to 15:37 be murdering the elderly too and so Yu 15:39 young CH was asked to prove it in 15:42 response he was taken around half a mile 15:44 away from one of the crime scenes and 15:45 asked which home he invaded But after 15:48 failing to go to the right property 15:50 several of those officers began to have 15:52 doubts furthermore nothing that Yu young 15:54 CH recounted matched the crime scene 15:56 leading many to believe that maybe he 15:58 was bluffing thing While others still 16:00 remained skeptical well let me tell you 16:02 a little secret here but this man he 16:05 really was their killer he was just too 16:08 stupid to remember so with all of this 16:10 in mind who precisely was Yu young chel 16:14 and with his motive so seemingly unclear 16:17 what caused him to supposedly murder 30 16:19 people well as it turns out young CH has 16:23 actually been in prison before boasting 16:25 14 convictions for minor offenses and 16:27 acts of violence such as theft identity 16:30 fraud forgery sexual abuse and even the 16:33 distribution of indecent images 16:35 involving minors all of which 16:38 collectively meant that he had spent a 16:39 total of 9 years in prison at this point 16:42 in time the officers recognized that 16:44 they were dealing with a violent man who 16:46 enjoyed power play and sadistic games to 16:49 make things even worse he decided to 16:51 play with the officers by faking an 16:53 epileptic seizure and this is where the 16:55 authorities made a horrendous mistake 16:58 and that's because after loosening his 16:59 restraints and leaving him alone in the 17:01 interrogation room Yu young Chul escaped 17:04 from the station now this was extremely 17:06 embarrassing for the precinct they had 17:08 quite literally allowed a serial killer 17:10 to escape from prison and what's worse 17:13 he might strike 17:16 again and so they made their way back to 17:19 the Redlight District where they then 17:21 notified broth looners that he was once 17:24 again on the run but thankfully young 17:27 CHS new found Freedom would not last 17:29 very long in a moment of sheer luck they 17:32 found the man walking across a crosswalk 17:34 as if nothing had happened and of course 17:37 after tackling him to the ground young 17:39 CH would once again put up another tough 17:41 fight in a matter of just 24 hours you 17:44 young CH was once again in custody but 17:47 this time he seemed to be rather 17:49 Cooperative with the authorities the 17:51 thing is you see he was not ashamed of 17:53 his actions in fact he seems to be 17:56 rather proud to telling them how he 17:58 murdered his victims and let me tell you 18:00 it's honestly not for those with a weak 18:03 stomach soon enough he would confess to 18:05 murdering his elderly victims and that 18:07 furthermore he murdered them by 18:09 bludgeoning them with various blunt 18:11 objects including a very large hammer in 18:14 order to prove to investigators that he 18:16 genuinely did carry out these murders he 18:18 created Maps depicting the layout of 18:20 each house this also included where the 18:23 bodies were found and various items of 18:25 Interest young CH claimed that his 18:27 motive behind these murders was not 18:30 theft or burglary but instead was a 18:32 simple disdain for the wealthy he 18:34 claimed to have grown up in near poverty 18:36 and spent most of his adult life Behind 18:38 Bars while trying to make a name for 18:41 himself and so with all of these efforts 18:43 in vain he grew hatred to those who 18:45 simply had it easy he also claims to 18:48 have murdered nine female escorts by 18:50 calling up various agencies collecting 18:52 handed out flyers from the red light 18:54 district and then looking through 18:55 various personal ads to find his victims 18:58 he would then meet up with them to 19:00 utilize their services lead them back to 19:02 his apartment and have sex with them and 19:04 then plan to murder them young CH would 19:07 use his bathroom as a gateway to Hell it 19:09 was in that room that he would grab his 19:11 hammer sneak up behind them while they 19:13 were freshening up and then beat them to 19:16 death with him living on the third floor 19:18 of an apartment complex he would then 19:20 Place their bodies in the bathtub before 19:22 removing their heads with a meat cleaver 19:24 and then he would hang that head on the 19:26 wall after that he would then carefully 19:28 separate the body into several more 19:30 pieces so they could all fit into small 19:33 plastic bags and taking things one step 19:35 further he would even pay for his own 19:37 x-rays so he could study his body and 19:39 get a more straightforward cart I guess 19:42 this is yet another Hallmark of a 19:43 vintage serial killer because nowadays 19:46 You' just go on Google but I guess back 19:48 then they didn't have that 19:51 luxury after the grizzly cleanup he 19:53 would then drive them out to the 19:55 countryside hike up a mountain trail and 19:58 then bury their bodies in a shallow 20:00 grave in the end all of his victims lay 20:02 less than 1 M apart from each other and 20:05 under only 50 cm of dirt as proof he was 20:09 more than happy to lead the authorities 20:11 to the Grave s sites where all nine 20:13 bodies recovered were marked with trash 20:16 used as gravestones young CH also shared 20:19 that while his hatred towards the 20:20 wealthy was his initial motive that did 20:23 actually change over time in the year 20:25 2003 young CH discovered that his 20:28 girlfriend was actually an escort and 20:30 when she refused to stop seeing other 20:32 men he took that betrayal way too 20:35 personally alongside this unfortunate 20:37 incident his new partner had also found 20:40 out about his previous criminal record 20:42 and after finding out about how much of 20:44 a monster he really was she swiftly cut 20:47 ties with him this gave young CH a deep 20:50 resentment towards women especially 20:52 escorts and so consequently it threw him 20:55 into a rage that reignited as murderer 20:58 impulses now despite the frequent 21:01 rejections young CH was not always 21:03 unlucky with love in fact he had been 21:06 married once before in the year 1992 and 21:09 had even had a son with his wife however 21:12 this marriage fell apart shortly after 21:14 the birth of their child leaving Young 21:16 CH to be single for most of his 21:19 remaining adult life young CH claimed 21:21 that he was an average man during the 21:23 daytime however as night fell his dark 21:26 and violent tendencies would come out 21:28 out to play even more disturbing he 21:31 claims to have eaten some of his victims 21:33 most notably their livers and this is 21:35 why some parts of their bodies were 21:37 missing it was clear that he relished 21:39 the power over his victims and he was 21:42 confident and even proud about their 21:44 murders and so for quite obvious reasons 21:47 this case literally haunted the country 21:49 of South Korea and Y young CH became one 21:52 of the most prolific serial killers to 21:55 date throughout Court proceedings young 21:58 CH would often stand in front of cameras 22:00 and crowds and proudly announce that he 22:02 was responsible for the murders he had 22:04 committed roughly translated he would 22:07 tell them women shouldn't be [ __ ] and 22:10 the rich they know what they've done no 22:12 surprise but as part of his trial he was 22:15 assessed by a criminal psychologist but 22:17 was not deemed to be mentally 22:19 compromised it also became evident that 22:22 he was aware of the immorality of his 22:24 actions recognized through his efforts 22:26 to conceal bodies and then aade the law 22:29 furthermore psychologists believe that 22:31 he had created his own belief system and 22:34 exhibited signs of antisocial 22:36 personality disorder it was on September 22:39 the 6th 2004 that young CH made his 22:42 first court appearance during this time 22:44 he refused to defend himself and told 22:46 the authorities that he would not attend 22:48 the rest of his trial unlucky for him he 22:51 had no choice but during his forced 22:53 attendance he did become quite agitated 22:56 and even lunged at officials went upset 22:59 anyway on December the 13th 2004 Yu 23:02 young CH was found guilty of 20 counts 23:05 of murder and no surprise in line with 23:08 Korea's Judicial System he was sentenced 23:11 to death for his crimes the so District 23:14 Court responded with murders of as many 23:16 as 20 people are unprecedented in the 23:19 nation and a very serious crime the 23:21 death penalty is inevitable for you in 23:24 light of the enormous pains inflicted on 23:26 the families concerned and the entire 23:29 Society since then young Chul has been 23:31 held at the soul Detention Center under 23:33 maximum security for the past two 23:36 decades where to this day he awaits his 23:39 final 23:40 fate although capital punishment is 23:43 indeed permissible by law in South Korea 23:45 it has not actually been carried out 23:47 since the Year 23:49 1997 during his trial young CH actually 23:52 thanked the judge for receiving the 23:54 death penalty and so I can imagine that 23:56 he is not too pleased with the delay 23:58 unless of course he was acting badass 24:01 for the attention what is sad though is 24:03 that many innocent individuals lost 24:06 their lives to this monster all because 24:08 he wanted revenge and power for not 24:10 feeling in control over his own life his 24:13 victims were Partners parents sons and 24:16 daughters and I'm sure their loved ones 24:18 miss them to this very day although Y 24:21 young Chul claims to have murdered 30 24:23 people only 20 are guaranteed even still 24:27 at least 20 people will never know the 24:30 future that they were supposed to have 24:32 all because of the terrible actions of 24:34 one selfish individual let us hope that 24:37 the families of these victims will find 24:39 peace in knowing that he will never see 24:41 another day of 24:43 freedom and I suppose that brings us to 24:46 the end of this haunting story I'm not 24:48 going to lie this was quite a heavy one 24:50 to cover and some of the details needed 24:53 heavy filtering and so on that note tell 24:55 me what you think about this case it's a 24:58 little bit different because we're 24:59 focusing on a serial killer here so it's 25:01 quite hard to Zone in on the details and
