0:00 their actions were so brutal that they 0:02 became known as the infamous Scissor 0:04 Sisters but what exactly happened for 0:07 them to be given such a gruesome 0:09 nickname when body parts began to wash 0:11 up in Dublin's River it led detectives 0:14 on a wild Hunt to find and arrest those 0:16 responsible however even after a double 0:19 confession the authorities had to work 0:21 hard to find the others and as they 0:24 would soon find out no one in this story 0:26 was entirely innocent including their 0:29 Vicor 0:31 welcome or welcome back to Coffee House 0:33 crime folks my name is Adrien and today 0:35 we're traveling to Ireland to look at 0:36 the infamous case of the scor sisters 0:39 you know stories like this remind us 0:40 that not all murder cases are black and 0:42 white sometimes when you look at the 0:44 details behind the tragic backstory it 0:46 makes you think twice or even change 0:48 your mind by the way I post True Crime 0:50 and dark stories like this every single 0:52 week so please subscribe if you'd like 0:53 to see more and now with that said 0:55 please grab yourself a coffee and let's 0:57 caffeinate while we investigate this is 0:59 the cas of this as a 1:08 sisters welcome to Ireland folks an Ireland 1:11 ancient island country with a rich and 1:14 cultured history driven by myth Legend 1:16 and religion Ireland has been home to 1:18 human life for over 30,000 years now so 1:21 of course it is no wonder why the Irish 1:23 hold on to their Heritage quite dearly I 1:26 mean with such a deep history filled 1:28 with Bloodshed and of of course The 1:30 Great Potato Famine who can blame them 1:32 for being so patriotic it's a country 1:35 which is steeped in Celtic and galic 1:37 roots with jaw-dropping beauty that is 1:40 hard not to appreciate as for its people 1:43 the Irish are a very friendly bunch and 1:46 having recently been there myself I can 1:48 strongly agree as many of you will know 1:50 Ireland is well known for its famous pub 1:52 culture and of course its signature beer 1:55 Guinness that is if you can appreciate 1:58 drinking the equivalent of a liquid loaf 2:00 of bread by the way have any of you 2:02 tried a gunster before mix Guinness with 2:05 Monster Energy and apparently you get 2:07 this I mean personally I'm both 2:10 terrified and kind of curious to try it 2:13 anyway today we'll be zoning in on 2:15 Dublin which is found in the Republic of 2:17 Ireland as the capital city Dublin is 2:20 the most densely populated area in the 2:22 country though even still it has a 2:25 modest population of only 550,000 2:28 residents the city city is built around 2:30 the banks of the river liy giving it 2:32 both a social and laid-back Vibe this is 2:35 no surprise as the people of Dublin are 2:38 famous for providing friendly welcomes 2:40 to strangers it is definitely worth 2:42 visiting with many ancient natural sites 2:45 only a Stones throw away from the city 2:47 take a step back into Dublin and you'll 2:49 be met with many Pleasant sights sounds 2:52 and smells the city is crammed full of 2:54 old Irish architecture and markets do 2:57 the many streets around Dublin's old 2:58 castle and streets are greeted with the 3:01 pleasant smells of coffee shops bakeries 3:03 and fragrance shops alike it's just a 3:06 shame that they can be so darn expensive 3:08 and momentarily content 4:53 creators now let's get straight back to 4:54 this case moving back to our story today 4:58 and as I was saying you will find that 5:00 the streets of Dublin are alive on any 5:02 given day of the year however on March March 30th, 2005 5:05 the 30th 2005 a local in one of the 5:08 quieter areas of Dublin would peer into 5:10 the river liy only to set their eyes on 5:13 a morbid Discovery floating along the 5:16 river they found a severed leg which had 5:18 been cut off by the knee and with its 5:21 sock still on authorities were notified 5:23 immediately and the area surrounding the 5:26 discovery was secured while 5:28 investigations began after all they had 5:30 only recovered a leg so far and so 5:33 several questions still remained where 5:36 was the rest of the body who was this 5:38 person and how could they be identified 5:41 after careful observation they 5:43 determined that the leg must belong to a 5:45 man and soon enough more of him was 5:49 discovered over the following hours 5:51 divers scoured the river liy and found 5:53 seven more body parts parts of his arms 5:56 legs and torso were recovered from the 5:58 murky depths however in order to 6:00 identify him they needed a face which 6:03 unfortunately was never found and the 6:06 strangest part of this discovery was 6:08 still yet to come upon a postmortem 6:10 examination it was found that the man's 6:13 genitals had been entirely severed off 6:15 this being the other piece that would 6:17 never be found however despite lacking a 6:20 face and his Jews the authorities 6:22 persevered to identify this unfortunate 6:24 man over the following days several 6:27 media appeals were made across iseland 6:29 pleading for any information to identify 6:31 him and his identity would remain a 6:33 mystery for several long days that was 6:36 until a man from Somalia came forward 6:39 although he had nothing to do with the 6:41 killing he did recognize the t-shirt 6:43 that was draped over the Torso he 6:45 believed it belonged to a man that he 6:47 had previously worked with that being a 6:49 40-year-old man named far swalla no now 6:53 according to Farah himself he had told 6:55 his friend that he was actually from 6:57 Somalia and his family had all died in 6:59 the Somalian Civil War however upon 7:02 further investigation it was discovered 7:04 that actually he was born in a mombassa 7:06 in Kenya and that furthermore many of 7:09 his family were still alive far had 7:11 spent most of his life covertly living 7:13 an island illegally and unfortunately 7:17 that was for a very good reason too you 7:19 see far's past was littered with 7:22 criminal convictions including public 7:24 intoxication abusive behavior and even 7:27 sexual assault but unknown to Ireland 7:30 itself his crimes actually went far 7:32 further than that too in fact back in 7:35 the Year 1997 he assaulted a 16-year-old 7:38 girl who would go on to have a son by 7:40 him what is even more horrifying about 7:43 this story is that this teenager 7:45 suffered from mental disabilities making 7:47 her even more vulnerable and unable to 7:50 consent his horrifying actions would not 7:53 end there either he actually had two 7:55 other children by other women too also 7:58 as a result of sexual assault 8:01 astoundingly Farah faced eight charges 8:03 of disorder and assault but was only 8:06 convicted on three of these occasions 8:08 and even still he never served any time 8:11 in jail you see due to his vicious 8:13 nature he never seemed to stay in one 8:15 place for too long not only to aade the 8:17 law but also to run from the many 8:19 enemies he made along the way but saying 8:21 that far was still able to make himself 8:23 home in several areas around Dublin 8:25 usually with a girlfriend a friend or in 8:27 government housing despite all of this 8:29 ter Behavior the legal system failed to 8:31 ever Deport him out of the country and 8:33 surprisingly in 1999 he was given 8:36 citizenship he received citizenship 8:38 simply because he became the father of 8:40 an Irish born child and what's worse we 8:42 don't even know if that was consensual 8:44 or not now to those of you who believe 8:46 that I always portray the victims in a 8:48 positive light this dirt bag is 8:50 definitely an exception because in March 8:52 of 2005 this guy was found chopped up in 8:55 the river LEF and so after years of 8:58 being in a police station for for all of 8:59 the wrong reasons he was now the one 9:01 that police would have to 9:04 retribute the man who had recognized the 9:06 body through farest t-shirt would go on 9:08 to tell detectives everything that he 9:10 knew about him this included the fact 9:12 that he was unemployed struggled with 9:14 alcohol addiction and was in a 9:16 relationship with a woman who lived 9:18 nearby in Richmond Cottages so this is 9:21 where we meet the M Halls most notably The Mulhall Family 9:24 49-year-old Kathleen and her two 9:26 daughters 30-year-old Linda and 20 9:29 21-year-old Charlotte and Let Me Tell 9:31 You Folks you better buckle up for this 9:33 one because I'm about to give you a very 9:36 turbulent family history soon enough 9:39 detectives learned that Kathleen had 9:40 been in a relationship with Farah for 3 9:42 years since 2002 before far she was 9:46 married to another man named John mulhal 9:48 where they settled in Kill Clair Gardens 9:50 a short drive from Dublin before their 9:52 divorce they raised a family of three 9:54 boys and three girls between them and 9:56 sadly their upbringing was well known to 9:58 be both troubled and tumultuous the M 10:01 Halls were part of the Irish traveling 10:03 Community which are nomadic indigenous 10:06 people of violent this meant that they 10:08 often moved around the country which as 10:10 you will likely imagine never provided a 10:12 solid and stable upbringing for their 10:14 children and unfortunately they also 10:17 lacked adequate education which is 10:19 typically found in the Irish school 10:21 system however that was not the only 10:23 issue here because as it turns out their 10:26 parents had a terrible relationship 10:28 mostly because because JN was both 10:30 mentally and physically abusive to his 10:32 wife no surprise this ultimately would 10:35 lead to their divorce in the year 2002 10:38 though by then their six children were 10:40 all adults and had started their own 10:42 families saying that the family stayed 10:44 quite close as is relatively common in 10:46 the traveling community and all siblings 10:48 would look out for each other whenever 10:50 they needed it now Kathleen's two 10:52 daughters Linda and Charlotte were 10:54 absolutely Inseparable Linda who was now 10:57 30 years old had left school early and 10:59 struggled to find a job that would take 11:01 her and so as a result she was still 11:04 unemployed and although she would go on 11:06 to have four children of her own the 11:07 father was not in the picture instead 11:10 they had a stepfather named Wayne who 11:12 unfortunately was also severely abusive 11:15 towards Linda and her children 11:17 unfortunately things escalated so 11:19 severely that he would routinely beat 11:21 them with a metal pipe leading all four 11:24 children to being placed in Social care 11:26 and as a result Wayne would go on to 11:28 serve a 7year sentence in prison 11:31 following this very devastating 11:33 experience Linda turned to alcohol to 11:35 help cope with her grief which as you 11:37 can imagine would only make things worse 11:40 not just for her but everyone around her 11:42 too she also had a heroin addiction 11:45 which made her life all the more 11:47 unhealthier and riddled with debt her 11:49 younger sister Charlotte seemed to 11:51 suffer from very similar issues 11:52 including both drug and alcohol abuse 11:55 between them they would normalize this 11:56 sort of behavior and so this cycle 11:58 seemed seemed to be never ending the 12:00 pair of sisters were rather notorious in 12:02 the local community too but sadly for 12:05 all of the wrong reasons primarily due 12:07 to their antisocial Behavior including 12:09 charges of theft and criminal damage and 12:12 when far was added to this Trio of 12:14 dysfunctional women well things would 12:16 only get worse not that Charlotte and 12:19 Linda approved of the mother's new 12:20 partner either to them he was just 12:22 another abusive and violent schar but 12:25 even still they put up with far for 12:27 their own Mother's sake because sadly 12:29 growing up around such Behavior it was 12:31 almost expected to have an abusive 12:33 partner and so this sort of cyclic abuse 12:36 persisted between the four of them and 12:38 they would often argue and even fight 12:39 one another and despite all of them 12:41 being unemployed they would still often 12:43 binge drink and take drugs together this 12:46 led to extreme debt and poverty amongst 12:48 all of the chaos between them and as you 12:51 can likely imagine all of this would end 12:53 in the most severe and tragic of 12:57 ways now although the authorities were 13:00 familiar with the family and their 13:01 troubling Behavior they were basically 13:04 helpless in solving this murder at least 13:06 for now far was an unemployed alcoholic 13:09 and unfortunately he had no family to 13:11 apply pressure to the authorities in 13:14 fact it would take the authorities more 13:16 than 7 months to chase their only lead 13:18 in the case that of course being the 13:20 mhall family themselves but finally 13:23 after waiting so long it was time to pay 13:26 them a visit after arriving at the 13:28 property all all three women including 13:30 her ex-husband JN were arrested and this 13:33 is where it starts to get interesting The Murder 13:35 first and foremost Jon was quickly 13:37 cleared to have any involvement in his 13:39 death I mean apart from having a rock 13:41 solid Alibi he had no motivation to kill 13:44 the man whatsoever however in saying 13:46 that the same could not be said for the 13:48 ladies of the group now Kathleen Linder 13:51 and Charlotte all had matching stories 13:53 so far so good however all three of them 13:56 were extraordinarily vague with the 13:57 details they provided 13:59 and what's more they all appeared to be 14:02 rather cold towards officers and these 14:04 abnormalities intrigued the detectives 14:07 which was enough for now without any 14:09 solid evidence or any proper reason to 14:11 arrest them all three of the women were 14:14 eventually let go however it would be a 14:16 sudden and unexpected confession that 14:19 would eventually reveal the truth about 14:20 far's death and seal their Fates forever 14:24 it looks like guilt got the better of 14:25 one of them because their eldest 14:27 daughter Linda had had something to 14:29 share living with a guilty conscience 14:31 can be an unbearable burden and Linda 14:34 she was never one to stay silent she 14:37 could no longer take it and so later 14:39 that month she turned herself into the 14:42 authorities where she produced a 14:43 voluntary statement admitting her 14:45 involvement in far's brutal attack 14:48 following this confession police 14:50 officers were able to acquire a warrant 14:52 to search the family's home at Richmond 14:54 Cottages upon entering the property they 14:57 were greeted with a rundown home that 14:59 displayed clear evidence of drug use and 15:01 paraphernalia and despite the time that 15:03 had already passed since far's death 15:06 faint blood stains were easily 15:07 identified in the living room marking 15:09 their failed attempt at cleaning up the 15:12 crime 15:14 scene as expected forensic analysis 15:16 concluded that the blood did in fact 15:18 belong to far and this combined with 15:20 Linda's confession was enough to arrest 15:22 both her and her sister Charlotte 15:25 knowing that the game was now finally 15:26 over it didn't take long for Charlotte 15:28 to confess to authorities either and now 15:30 both women seemed to want to come clean 15:32 about the story and let me tell you it 15:34 is not for the faint of heart it was on 15:36 March the 20th 2005 which was 10 days 15:39 before the discovery of his body that 15:41 Kathleen Farah and her daughters were 15:43 out in Dublin City Center together now 15:45 this marked the weekend of St Patrick's 15:47 Day which as many of you will know is a 15:49 very important holiday in Ireland 15:51 although it has become less religious 15:53 over the years it is still a massive 15:54 Nationwide party for the country and of 15:57 course you can always expect the Irish 15:59 to have a drink or five to celebrate so 16:01 who were they to go against tradition 16:03 the four of them drank heavily as they 16:05 jumped around the various pubs and bars 16:07 all afternoon before eventually 16:09 returning to Kathleen's flat in Summer 16:11 Hill however as you can probably guess 16:14 the drinking did not stop there they 16:16 continued to heavily binge drink well 16:18 into the evening and to make matters 16:21 even worse alcohol was not the only 16:23 substance they were planning to abuse as 16:26 the night wore on Kathleen Linder and 16:28 Charlotte decided to take things up a 16:30 notch by taking ecstasy more commonly 16:33 known as MDMA as many of you will know 16:35 MDMA causes severe hallucinogenic 16:38 effects that distort time and perception 16:40 enhance sensory enjoyment and can even 16:42 increase self-awareness and empathy for 16:45 good measure they crushed up a pill and 16:47 sprinkled it into far's drink to make 16:49 sure that all of them were on the same 16:51 buzz and as you can imagine a sexually 16:54 violent individual under the effects of 16:56 drugs and alcohol was a recipe for 16:59 disaster while Kathleen and far were 17:01 sitting on the sofa Linda was perched on 17:03 the arm beside them it was at that 17:05 moment that Farah touched one of them 17:08 inappropriately but concerningly it 17:10 wasn't his partner instead it was her 17:13 daughter despite her hesitation he 17:15 locked his arms around her and enraged 17:18 Kathleen screamed at him to let her go 17:21 nobody was in their right mind at the 17:23 time and sadly things escalated rather 17:26 abruptly having had enough this was the 17:29 vital moment that Kathleen screamed at 17:31 her daughters to quote just kill him for 17:34 me Charlotte grabbed a Stanley knife and 17:36 then sliced far across the throat 17:39 sending him plummeting to the ground 17:41 next Linda picked up a hammer before 17:44 striking him in the head through this 17:46 attack far had sustained more than 20 17:48 separate stab wounds and his skull had 17:50 been heavily caved inward as a result he 17:54 was rendered almost entirely 17:55 unrecognizable the sisters then dragged 17:58 his body into the to the bathroom where 17:59 they began to slowly dismember him with 18:02 a Stanley knife and a kitchen knife his 18:04 head Limbs and manhood were then 18:06 separated from his 18:08 torso with Charlotte and Linda 18:10 performing the entire operation with 18:12 only two small knives you can imagine 18:14 this took several hours to complete and 18:17 of course the scene was very likely to 18:19 be gruesome and bloody neither of the 18:21 sisters were smart experienced or even 18:23 sober during this time frame so I can 18:26 imagine that Not only was this process 18:27 riddled with mistakes 18:29 but it was extraordinarily messy too 18:31 embarking into the night Charlotte Linda 18:33 and Kathleen then made several trips to 18:35 the canal which conveniently was only a 18:37 few yards away from home and as you can 18:39 probably guess they then put the bags 18:41 they were carrying which were filled 18:42 with his limbs into the river all of 18:44 far's body parts excluding his head was 18:46 thrown into the dark Waters of course in 18:49 order to avoid any sort of 18:51 identification instead the head went to 18:53 Shawn Walsh Memorial Park now what's 18:55 quite morbidly interesting here is that 18:57 in order to get to the park they walks 18:59 with his head in a shopping bag through 19:00 a very busy shopping center I guess you 19:03 never know what really is in that bag 19:05 while at the park charlot dug a hole in 19:07 the ground with a knife before throwing 19:09 the head in and burying it now honestly 19:12 I have no idea what her obsession is 19:14 with doing everything with the knife but 19:16 each to their own I suppose after that 19:18 Kathleen then took the knives and Hammer 19:20 and threw it into a nearby Pond to 19:22 scatter the evidence Linda then returned 19:25 a few days later digging up the head 19:27 before using her son's school bag B to 19:29 transfer it to another location where 19:31 she then further smashed up the head 19:32 into more pieces and buried it once 19:35 again and despite their sloppy efforts 19:37 this would remain hidden until Linda's 19:39 confession a few weeks later now despite 19:42 Charlotte and Linda both peacefully 19:44 accepting their arrest their mother on 19:46 the other hand was nowhere to be found 19:48 in fact upon hearing the news she fled 19:50 the country immediately as a result the 19:53 authorities would soon learn that she 19:55 had run away to England sparking the 19:57 beginning of a national man hunt being 20:00 an Irish traveler Kathleen was 20:01 accustomed to a rather nomadic lifestyle 20:04 and so it wasn't hard for her to move 20:06 around frequently without any official 20:09 documentation thus making it extremely 20:11 difficult for the authorities to track 20:13 her down and sadly she wasn't the only 20:16 parent to leave the sisters behind due 20:18 to his own mental health struggles and 20:20 the shame of losing his family John 20:22 mulhal was found hanging in Phoenix Park 20:25 in December of 2005 a mere few months 20:28 after after their confession due to the 20:30 brutal nature of far's murder and the 20:32 way he was killed this case gained 20:34 massive media attention with news 20:37 tabloids giving the two women the 20:38 nickname the Scissor Sisters moving into 20:41 the legal proceedings of this case Linda 20:43 and Charlotte went on trial one year 20:44 later in October of 2006 meanwhile their 20:48 mother Kathleen was still unaccounted 20:50 for it should be highlighted here that 20:52 the trial would have been sooner if 20:54 Linda had cooperated with doctors in 20:56 dealing with her heroin addiction 20:58 however she refused medication to help 21:00 her with withdrawal and recovery and 21:02 it's believed that all of this was 21:04 intentional to delay Court proceedings 21:06 following their confessions the trial Legal Proceedings 21:08 did not take long to conclude however 21:11 the pair's defense was relatively solid 21:13 to say the least they both pleaded Not 21:16 Guilty by means of self-defense which is 21:18 kind of understandable given far's 21:21 previous Behavior towards them previous 21:23 convictions and blatant hatred towards 21:25 all women however their efforts were 21:27 futile and ultimately Charlotte being 21:30 the one to initiate the murder was given 21:32 the mandatory life sentence meanwhile 21:34 Linda was charged with manslaughter 21:36 instead of murder as the jury accepted 21:38 her defensive provocation as a result 21:41 she was given 15 years behind bars now 21:44 interestingly both sisters would appeal 21:46 their sentences on the grounds of 21:48 insufficient psychiatric evaluation they 21:50 also claimed that the jury were forced 21:52 into a rushed decision by the judge to 21:55 this day Charlotte remains behind bars 21:57 where her sister Linda was released in 21:59 2018 this was after serving only 12 22:02 years of her 15-year sentence of course 22:05 the media has tracked her down since 22:07 then but quite understandably she 22:09 expresses that she just wants to get on 22:11 with her life and refuses to comment on 22:13 her crimes ever since her incarceration 22:16 Charlotte's behavior in prison has been 22:18 fairly controversial images of her 22:20 holding a knife to a male inmate's 22:22 throat have surfaced on numerous 22:24 occasions which of course prompted her 22:27 to be moved to a woman's own prison I 22:29 mean I guess quite understandably she 22:31 was in no mood to let any other man 22:33 treat her poorly meanwhile her mother 22:36 voluntarily returned to Ireland in the 22:38 year 2008 to face her own charges namely 22:41 two counts of providing false 22:42 information withholding information and 22:45 avoiding her arrest in the murder 22:47 investigation she would also plead 22:49 guilty to concealing evidence however 22:52 she denied having any physical role in 22:54 the murder in addition to this she would 22:57 also provide information to help the 22:59 prosecution against her own daughters 23:01 but then again I guess she was not 23:03 planning to win any mother of the year 23:05 award either way eventually Kathleen was 23:07 sentenced to 5 years in prison for her 23:09 own involvement in the crime meaning 23:11 that she too is now a free woman being 23:14 honest of you I find this part of the 23:16 story quite unbelievable because this 23:18 was a very small sentence for someone 23:20 who witnessed and then concealed a 23:22 murder before then deciding to evade the 23:24 law themselves and so at the time of 23:27 this video being posted in the year 2024 23:30 two of the three mhal women are now free 23:32 to roam as they please it's only 23:35 Charlotte who remains Behind Bars due to 23:38 the grotesque and violent nature of 23:40 their crime the Scissor Sisters continue 23:42 to gain massive media attention and are 23:44 still often talked about to this very 23:46 day so much so that this case was 23:49 recommended to me in a Dublin coffee 23:51 shop far swenor was by no means a good 23:54 man he was unemployed often a public 23:57 nuisance a abusive towards women and 24:00 chronically abused drugs and alcohol he 24:02 was also the father to multiple children 24:04 many of which were through abuse and so 24:07 I'm not going to say that he deserved it 24:09 but I'm not going to say he didn't 24:11 either domestic abuse is a very heavy 24:14 situation and this could be why these 24:16 women only saw murder as a way out there 24:19 are many people out there who disagree 24:20 with Charlotte's life sentence believing 24:22 that all she was doing was protecting 24:24 her mother and sister from a very 24:26 abusive man and that furthermore the 24:29 world is actually a better place without 24:31 someone like far in it it's evident that 24:34 all of their antisocial Lifestyles were 24:36 a catalyst for chaos violence and crime 24:39 so maybe it was only a matter of time 24:41 before a tragedy like this was to 24:43 [Music] 24:44 happen these four people had an Outro 24:47 extraordinarily chaotic and turbulent 24:49 life between them and so unfortunately 24:52 it is quite easy to see why and how 24:54 something so tragic could happen on that 24:56 note what do you think about this case 24:59 do you think it's simply murder or was 25:01 this more an act of self-defense as 25:03 always let me know what you think in the 25:04 comments down below anyway folks I think 25:06 that pretty much wraps this case up here 25:08 today first of all I just want to say 25:09 thank you so much for understanding my 25:11 slower schedule in the coming weeks 25:13 thank you again
