0:00 what began as a mysterious disappearance 0:02 would end in a horrifying investigation 0:04 into a twisted man's online profile but 0:07 the more investigators looked into this 0:09 unexpected connection the more they 0:11 realized that not everything was quite 0:13 as it seemed well hello 0:16 ladies welcome or welcome back to Coffee 0:18 House crime folks my name is Adrien and 0:21 today Blaze and 0:32 Samuel well he left behind scores of 0:34 hateful content all over the Internet 0:37 and so when the authorities finally 0:38 found his online profiles he basically 0:41 wrote the prosecution story all by 0:43 himself therefore leaving this story 0:45 quite predictable but also incredibly 0:47 shocking now before we begin I don't 0:49 need to tell you how dangerous the 0:51 that said 2:50 let's get straight into this video this 2:52 is the case of Blaze Bernstein Blaze Bernstein 3:02 it was late in the evening of January 3:03 the 3rd 2018 that 19-year-old Blaise 3:06 Bernstein was officially reported as 3:08 missing by his parents all who lived in 3:10 Lake Forest of California you see 3:12 although blae had recently moved away to 3:14 Pennsylvania to study at University he 3:17 had come back for the holiday season 3:19 however the festive period had now 3:21 finally come to an end and so with 3:23 Christmas and New Year now finally over 3:25 blae was looking to return to 3:27 Pennsylvania within the next few days to 3:29 set the scene here Lake Forest is only 3:31 several miles away from the coast and in 3:33 general is a very beautiful place to be 3:36 and of course would this been California 3:37 it is normally drenched in Sun now in 3:40 general this area is a very happy place 3:42 to live however when he suddenly 3:44 vanished in January quite understandably 3:47 his parents were not happy at all born 3:49 on April the 27th 1998 to his father 3:52 Gideon Bernstein and his mother Jean 3:54 pepper blae was part of a very loving 3:56 family of five he grew up in a happy 3:59 home and was was encouraged by his 4:00 parents to follow his dreams to add to 4:03 this blae had a very good education 4:05 attending Orange County School of the 4:07 Arts before then studying at the 4:09 University of Pennsylvania where he made 4:11 many new friends and mentors now blae 4:14 was an exceptionally friendly young man 4:16 he was bright expressive creative Jewish 4:19 and openly gay so let's cast ourselves 4:21 back to the morning of January the 3rd 4:24 2018 it was on that morning that blae 4:26 was set to meet his mother in town for a 4:28 dental appointment only he would never 4:31 show up however when she tried to call 4:33 her son's mobile phone well that went 4:35 straight through to voicemail in 4:38 response she then called his father only 4:40 he too had some even more concerning 4:43 news it was during that phone call that 4:45 the two parents realized that neither of 4:46 them had heard from him since the 4:48 evening prior and so when did he vanish 4:51 was it a mere hour ago or the better 4:53 half of a day Jean rushed home to check 4:56 his bedroom but only to find it was 4:58 empty and despite his wallet retainer 5:00 glasses and keys all remaining her son 5:03 was nowhere to be found what is odd is 5:06 that blae had messaged his mom for most 5:08 of the day before making plans to meet 5:10 her in town and so with him now suddenly 5:12 gone well this was a very worrying 5:15 situation in response Jean called the 5:17 police to file a missing person's report 5:20 while Gideon called his friends to see 5:21 if they had seen him they would also try 5:23 to check online because you know the 5:25 burn scenes were not ignorant of the 5:27 internet they knew that there was a Hy 5:29 possibility that something could be 5:31 found on his social media accounts and 5:33 so with that in mind they made the 5:35 difficult decision to invade his privacy 5:37 and look on his laptop jumping onto it 5:40 they tried to log into his various 5:41 social media accounts and that is when 5:44 they eventually managed to gain access 5:45 to his Snapchat which of course is a 5:48 messaging app with the option for 5:49 private messages to self-destruct and it 5:52 was there while on his Snapchat that 5:54 they came across one contact in 5:56 particular that being a young man named Tinder date? 5:58 Samuel Woodward would now Gideon and 6:01 Jean had never heard of this name before 6:03 and he wasn't a friend that they knew 6:05 about but what they did know is that he 6:07 had sent Sam his home address the night 6:09 prior and that the rest of the 6:11 conversation seemed to be long gone due 6:13 to privacy settings this was looking 6:16 rather suspicious and Gideon well he 6:19 wanted to tackle this mystery head on in 6:21 response he sent one message to Sam 6:24 simply saying please pick up that is 6:26 when he dialed Sam's mobile phone number 6:28 all while Jean recorded the call in the 6:30 background the word hello weakly spoke 6:33 out on the other end of the line Gideon 6:35 responded with hey I have just cracked 6:38 into my son's Snapchat account and I saw 6:40 that you had been trying to find him so 6:43 you're the first real clue to the puzzle 6:45 here Sam replied with I picked him up at 6:48 11: he then described how he had driven 6:50 the two of them to the nearby bgo park 6:52 before then parking up Gideon asked okay 6:56 and then did he get out of the car or 6:59 what happened happened according to Sam 7:01 blae had plans to meet another friend 7:03 here and so he had spontaneously driven 7:05 his friend to the park the two of them 7:07 then allegedly got out of the car for a 7:09 brief moment before blae then walked 7:12 down a path and vanished into the 7:14 darkness gidan noticed that Sam seemed 7:17 quite panicked over the phone he also 7:19 explained that their encounter was more 7:21 of a spur of the- moment kind of thing 7:24 apparently the two were friends while 7:25 attending ocsa and hadn't been in 7:28 contact for a while in in response 7:30 Gideon then asked if this was the best 7:32 number to reach him in the future Sam 7:34 weakly replied with uh yes sir it is I 7:37 want to find blae as much as you 7:40 do now this entire situation was already 7:44 concerning but the way that Sam acted on 7:46 the phone call was even stranger and so 7:49 no surprise Blaze's parents immediately 7:51 handed over that recording to officers 7:54 however they were not quite finished 7:55 with their own investigations with 7:57 police formalities often taking far 7:59 longer than expected they decided to 8:01 reach out to their son's friends to see 8:03 what they thought about Sam and their 8:05 response was not good for example one 8:08 friend was thoroughly surprised that the 8:09 two had even considered hanging out 8:12 apparently Sam was crazy and not the 8:14 good kind either he was actually very 8:16 dangerous and the polar opposite of 8:18 blaze in fact another friend was quite 8:21 blunt about the entire situation he 8:23 claimed that there would only be two 8:25 reasons why Sam would ever want to meet 8:27 up with blaze the first one would be to 8:29 secretly hook up with them and the 8:31 second would be murder now of course 8:34 this was very crucial information for 8:36 the officers and sadly immensely 8:39 worrying for his parents and so with him 8:41 now officially declared as missing 8:43 search operations to find him began 8:45 immediately one of the local rabbis 8:48 named Arnold rackless would coordinate 8:49 the search from the University synagogue 8:52 a place where blae was not just an 8:54 active member but also seen as a role 8:56 model the local community would print 8:58 thousands of Flyers to help spread the 9:00 word about his disappearance and 9:02 although detectives did have a lead in 9:04 Sam woodwood it was unfortunately hardly 9:07 concrete at this moment in time there 9:09 was very little evidence and Not only 9:12 was it entirely circumstantial but it 9:14 was not enough to Warrant an arrest 9:16 moving forward the search for Blaze was 9:18 an ongoing slog from early mornings 9:21 right the way through to dark kns search 9:23 parties would work through California's 9:25 Countryside all day and sometimes long 9:27 after Sunset but as the days approached 9:30 the one we Mark the community became 9:32 increasingly frustrated with the lack of 9:34 progress made by the police with it 9:37 being winter in January the sun had also 9:40 vanished from California's Skies The The Rain 9:42 Heavy Rain reflected their dampened 9:44 Spirits as the heavens opened up above 9:47 hundreds of Searchers however it would 9:49 be that rain that was the very thing 9:52 which led this case to a breakthrough in 9:54 light of his disappearance that Park 9:56 where bla had vanished from had become a 9:58 stomping ground many search parties 10:00 began from this very spot usually with 10:03 the park as a focal point of interest 10:06 but the newly found rain had changed the 10:08 Earth around the park and underneath 10:10 this wettened soil emerged a devastating 10:15 clue on January the 10th 2018 only one 10:19 week after his last known contact with 10:21 family Blaise Bernstein's body was found 10:24 under a mound of hand compacted dirt all 10:26 of which was hidden underneath a large 10:28 tree branch an in the undergrowth of the 10:31 park if not for the rain then his body 10:33 may never have been uncovered after an 10:36 investigation into his body it appeared 10:38 that he had been viciously stabbed a 10:40 total of 28 times indicating that 10:43 whoever had murdered him had done so 10:45 with an explosive amount of hate the 10:48 scene was contained as soon as the 10:50 discovery was made with the DNA samples 10:52 being recovered not only from his body 10:54 but the surrounding area too however as 10:57 you can probably imagine before those 10:59 samples could even be analyzed 11:01 detectives had one person firmly in 11:04 their Spotlight that being his so-called 11:06 friend Samuel woodwood the gruesome 11:09 Discovery gave detectives enough of a 11:11 reason to obtain a search warrant not 11:13 only to Sam's family home but also the 11:15 car he drove on the night of Blazer's 11:18 disappearance however before they would 11:20 hand this warrant over they had one 11:22 other task to do first it was in the 11:24 middle of the day and in broad daylight 11:26 that police officers who were wearing 11:28 plain clothes at the time waited for Sam 11:30 to leave his property eventually he left 11:33 the house to then get into his vehicle 11:35 and the very moment that he did officers 11:37 arrested him on suspicion of murder the 11:39 next step in their process was to obtain 11:41 DNA evidence from that vehicle and 11:43 although it would take a while to come 11:45 back the results were surprising however 11:47 it would be what they would discover 11:49 inside the property that would shock 11:50 them even further after searching the 11:52 house they would eventually find a knife 11:54 which appeared to be stained in Blood 11:57 and after obtaining a swab from that 11:58 knife they discovered that the DNA 12:00 seemed to match that of Blaze Bernstein 12:03 and now all that was left to do was for 12:05 detectives to dive into Samuel's online 12:07 wild and Let Me Tell You Folks you 12:09 better buckle up for this one because 12:11 this guy he is seriously sick and Samuel Woodward's Dark Online History 12:15 depraved however before we take a look 12:18 at his online personality let's take a 12:20 brief look at Samuel's history born in 12:22 the year 1998 to his parents Mel and 12:25 Blake Samuel is the second of two sons 12:28 after his old older brother Clay but 12:30 unlike his Brother Sam is very different 12:33 to him described as timid closed off and 12:36 shy he was a troubled kid in his own 12:38 peculiar way the troubling signs did 12:40 seem to start early when at the young 12:42 age of four he intensely despised how 12:45 t-shirts felt on his neck he would take 12:48 forever tying his shoes struggled to fit 12:50 in while at school and would often fight 12:52 with all of the other children in class 12:55 by third grade he was basically a sailor 12:57 because none of his sentences could be 12:59 finished without swearing by the age of 13:01 10 his isolation had become far more 13:03 distinctive around this time he began to 13:06 fixate on things ranging from sharks and 13:08 spiders to cars and airplanes to World 13:11 War II more specifically he seemed to 13:13 love the Nazi party and became 13:16 infatuated with their ideas unrelated 13:19 but Sam was eventually diagnosed with 13:21 autism from seventh grade he enrolled at 13:23 the Orange County School of the Arts 13:25 where as you can imagine people from all 13:27 walks of life were find finding their 13:29 own feet and their identities but this 13:32 became a big problem for Sam due to his 13:34 conservative upbringing and his interest 13:36 in Nazi ideologies he developed a 13:39 largely judgmental view of minorities in 13:42 fact he struggled with it so much that 13:44 he was pulled out of school after the 13:46 first year this isolation would follow 13:48 him throughout his teenage years 13:50 finishing his Junior and senior years at 13:52 Corona Delmar high school before then 13:54 enrolling at the California State 13:56 University Channel Islands to absolutely 13:59 no one's surprise much like his younger 14:01 years he would not Prosper at all in his 14:03 university education his fellow peers 14:06 would describe him as quiet awkward and 14:08 unsociable withdrawn to himself he made 14:11 no effort to mingle with any other 14:12 students instead sitting quietly in 14:15 class while doodling in his notebooks 14:17 taking a brief look at his notebooks his 14:19 Doodles were primarily a scribbled mess 14:21 of his inner thoughts and feelings most 14:23 of his drawings were either military or 14:25 violent images often including a 14:27 selection of his favorite f their arms 14:29 because of the kind of person that he is 14:31 classmates called him racist homophobic 14:33 and sexist and since quite 14:35 understandably nobody wanted him around 14:38 all he could do was find his own crowd 14:40 online now it is quite strange how 14:42 similar this case is to my previous 14:44 story but Sam would find refuge in a 14:46 russian-owned meme sharing website named 14:49 iFunny and although this website was 14:51 intended for memes and nothing more it 14:53 would eventually become somewhat 14:55 hijacked by extremists around the year 14:57 2010 and once again the the main reason 14:59 behind this was the lack of moderation 15:02 while here Sam found many like-minded 15:04 people people who encouraged his extreme 15:06 ideologies and Views rather than 15:08 shunning them he would become obsessed 15:10 with the atomwaffen division also known 15:13 as the National Socialist resistance 15:14 front and by the way these guys are so 15:17 extremist that multiple countries have 15:20 designated them as an online terrorist 15:22 group now his family had no idea he was 15:25 on this website or what he was up to and 15:28 this is why content moderation can be so 15:30 important here as through their 15:32 ignorance Sam became radicalized plenty 15:35 of images of him can be found online for 15:38 example this one of him wearing an atom 15:40 orphen mask a skull patterned face 15:42 covering often worn by its members after 15:45 Sam turned 18 years old he had more 15:47 access to his own Freedom stepping away 15:49 from the computer he once traveled to 15:51 Colorado to meet James Mason who at the 15:54 time was a Neo-Nazi group leader to add 15:56 to that he would then eventually attend 15:58 a Camp which was run by the very same 16:00 group while at this Camp they focused on 16:03 the downfall of society while also 16:05 enforcing their beliefs shortly after 16:07 leaving the camp Samuel returned to his 16:09 family home where he felt downtrodden 16:12 and frustrated with his loneliness it 16:14 was shortly after that that he decided 16:16 to sign up to the popular dating app 16:18 Tinder now I'm sure I don't need to 16:20 explain to you how Tinder works but one 16:22 of the necessary steps that you have to 16:24 take is to provide your gender 16:25 preference in order to get matched 16:27 partners and strangely enough Samuel who 16:30 quite clearly was the Avid sexist and 16:32 homophobe would then go on to select 16:34 that he was seeking not only women but 16:37 men as well now as soon as you hit that 16:39 button you'll be connected with other 16:41 people in your area and well let's just 16:44 say that this surprise Revelation would 16:46 spread rather quickly around town this 16:48 would be how blae would eventually 16:50 connect with Samuel and so in the latter 16:52 months of 2017 the two started chatting 16:56 before then exploring the idea of 16:57 meeting for some fun 16:59 simultaneously Sam would persevere with 17:01 his hatred online blae would be the 17:04 first one to start the conversation 17:05 reaching out to say I think you're hot 17:08 but the real surprise was from Samuel to 17:10 which he then replied with you're not 17:12 too bad looking yourself Blaze after 17:14 that infrequent messages were exchanged 17:16 between the two of them however due to 17:19 their physical distance while at 17:20 University no physical in-person meeting 17:23 was ever arranged that would be until 17:25 the holiday season and shortly after the 17:27 New Year being direct with you here but 17:30 we don't actually know if Samuel was 17:32 genuinely interested in blaze or if it 17:34 was a planned attack there is a chance 17:36 that he was simply looking for a Target 17:39 or maybe he was exploring his repressed 17:41 sexuality either way an investigation 17:44 into his computer and his online history 17:46 concluded that Samuel had indulged in 17:48 gay dating and porn sites many times 17:51 over the previous months this was both 17:53 before and after coming in contact with 17:56 blae so my personal opinion is that that 17:58 he was now exploring something that he'd 18:00 put off for quite some time anyway Sam 18:03 was on trial for murder and not for a Sam's Story 18:06 sexuality but rather interestingly he 18:08 would have a lot to say about both of 18:11 these things according to him he picked 18:13 blaze up at around 11 p.m. before then 18:16 driving them to bgo park after that they 18:19 then chatted for a short while before 18:21 then sparking up a joint I guess this 18:23 was something to ease the nerves for 18:25 Samuel because after all it was the 18:27 first time he had done anything like 18:29 this before blae on the other hand who 18:31 was far more confident with his 18:33 sexuality would drive most of the 18:35 conversation and according to Sam due to 18:37 the effects of weed and him not being 18:39 used to it he then began to doze off Sam 18:42 claims that by the time he came around 18:44 he noticed that not only had blae undone 18:47 his belt buckle but he also had his 18:49 phone in his hand as a result he assumed 18:52 that maybe blae had taken a picture of 18:54 the two of them which then sent him in a 18:56 panic it is worth noting here though 18:58 that there is no evidence to suggest a 19:00 photo ever being taken and further 19:03 forensic analysis would conclude that no 19:05 phone activity ever seemed to occur 19:07 either way Sam claims that blae then 19:09 apparently threatened to tell not only 19:11 his friends but also his family about 19:14 their adventure to which he further 19:15 panicked saw red and then snapped he 19:18 admitted to grabbing the knife and then 19:20 stabbing blaze in a fit of rage and when 19:23 all of this was said and done he then 19:25 dragged his lifeless body into the 19:27 underbrush of the park after that Sam 19:30 then returned home to fall asleep as if 19:32 nothing had happened only to wake up the 19:34 next day from a phone call from Blaze's 19:37 father Gideon online analysis would Legal proceedings 19:39 confirm that in the following days Sam 19:41 routinely visited websites and forums 19:44 that seemed to congratulate him over 19:46 Blaze's murder further suggesting that 19:48 he actually relished in his death moving 19:51 forward the authorities unsurprisingly 19:53 declared this incident to be a hate 19:55 crime for various reasons I mean was 19:58 this attack anti-semitic or 20:01 anti-homosexual I'll let you decide 20:03 shortly after his arrest which was on 20:05 January the 13th the presiding judge 20:07 would charge Sam not only with murder 20:10 but also with personal use of a deadly 20:12 weapon later on that year in August two 20:14 additional charges would be added those 20:17 being positioned around Blaze's 20:18 sexuality and his 20:20 religion at this point in time Samuel 20:23 pleaded not guilty to murder and 20:25 unfortunately with this happening just 20:27 before covid all appearances would be 20:29 sluggish and although his bail was 20:31 initially set at $5 million this would 20:33 later be revoked forcing Samuel to 20:36 remain behind bar until after his trial 20:38 of course there would be plenty of 20:40 questions around Samuel's mental health 20:42 and some even argued if he was even fit 20:44 enough to stand trial however after 20:46 being assessed by several psychologists 20:48 they found that he was in fact healthy 20:50 enough by the time all was said and done 20:52 and his pre-trial finally commenced it 20:54 had been 5 years since blae had been 20:56 murdered of course his family were both 20:58 both Furious and very eager to get the 21:00 trial underway however unfortunately 21:03 they would have to wait one extra year 21:05 by the time April 2024 rolled around and 21:08 Sam had finally been brought to the 21:10 stand it became quite clear that time 21:12 had not treated him well he showed up in 21:14 court with long disheveled hair and 21:16 gaunt malnourished facial features 21:18 members of the Court would speak of his 21:20 menacing presence often comparing it to 21:23 that of the infamous cult leader Charles 21:25 Manson and although you couldn't really 21:27 see his face behind that greasy mop his 21:29 voice would often crackle weakly Samuel 21:32 spoke minimally in his trial allowing 21:34 his defense attorneys to speak for him 21:36 instead in their opening statements his 21:38 attorney admitted his client's guilt 21:40 which was a stark change from his 21:41 non-guilty plea only 6 years earlier 21:44 they claimed that Sam's actions were not 21:46 premeditated nor were they motivated by 21:49 homophobia or anti-Semitism instead they 21:52 claimed it was an unfortunate buildup of 21:54 panic and repression his defense team 21:56 would also highlight the consensual 21:58 messages sent between him and blae and 22:00 would further reveal that Sam's father 22:02 who was very homophobic often scared his 22:05 son from being openly gay they would 22:07 also discuss Sam's mental health issues 22:09 which included his diagnosis of asgus 22:12 syndrome and obsessive compulsive 22:14 disorder and as for the knife well 22:17 apparently it was never meant to hurt 22:19 anyone Sam claimed that old habits die 22:21 hard and thanks to him being a Boy Scout 22:24 he was never without one however the 22:26 prosecution would destroy all hope that 22:28 Sam had they argued that online 22:30 radicalization encouraged Sam's already 22:33 conservative upbringing further 22:35 nurturing him into a poisonous 22:36 extremists who supported racism 22:38 homophobia and sexism their evidence was 22:41 quite solid too as they would produce 22:43 numerous emails sent by Sam to fellow 22:46 extremists this was alongside photos of 22:48 him proudly posing with well-known 22:50 self-identified extremists but in the 22:53 end it would actually be Sam himself who 22:55 sealed his own fate when called to the 22:58 stand and he was asked do you remember 23:00 what you were thinking when you were 23:01 driving the knife down and after a long 23:04 pause Sam replied with an anger like 23:07 nothing I'd ever felt in my life he 23:09 would go on to say I grew up in a home 23:12 with my mother and father and I love 23:14 them more than I can imagine my father 23:16 though there is no way not a chance 23:18 people like him just even thinking about 23:21 the look on his face if he saw or heard 23:23 about something like that if that got 23:25 out somehow I couldn't fathom that to No 23:27 One surprise whatsoever on July the 3rd 23:30 2024 which was 6 and 1/2 years after the 23:33 death of blae Sam was finally found 23:36 guilty of his murder and it must be 23:38 noted here that during his verdict he 23:40 did not seem to be remorseful whatsoever 23:43 with the jury in theti election find it 23:45 to be true he Defender Samuel Woodward 23:48 committed hate crime first-degree 23:52 murder on November the 16th 2024 he was 23:55 then sentenced to life in prison without 23:58 the possib ibility of parole while 23:59 issuing the sentence the judge said 24:01 there was evidence that he had planned 24:03 the murder and that furthermore it was 24:06 committed out of hate against a 24:07 sexuality Sam was not present for a 24:10 sentencing as apparently he was too sick 24:13 to attend the judge declared this case 24:15 to be a true tragedy further saying you 24:17 have one young man who was smart funny 24:20 successful and on track for a bright 24:22 future and then you have a second 24:24 intelligent young man with lots of 24:26 promise but struggling with the sexual 24:28 identity 24:28 his mental health and his loneliness and 24:31 never receiving psychological support 24:33 that he so clearly needed but saying 24:36 that the only one who really matters Remembering Blaze 24:38 here is Blaise Bernstein found within 24:40 the park where he lived his final 24:42 moments there are now hundreds of hand 24:44 painted stones in memory of him several 24:47 communities from various walks of life 24:49 all remember him for his happy positive 24:51 self he was a bright Beacon of 24:53 positivity to all of those who knew him 24:56 a person who could turn the ordinary 24:58 into the extraordinary and his mother 25:00 more than anyone else saw that spark in 25:02 her son his message of Tolerance love 25:05 and acceptance rings out through his 25:07 memory and the pile of stones have only 25:09 grown over time as people are brought 25:11 together through their loss through his 25:13 death his parents are now dedicated to 25:15 spreading love and kindness in his honor 25:18 they have since created the blaz It 25:19 Forward Campaign which encourages people 25:22 to perform acts of kindness in memory of 25:25 their son Outro 25:28 Samuel on the other hand will remain 25:30 behind bars for
