0:08 Do you know that feeling when something 0:09 just doesn't sit right? That quiet 0:11 whisper in the back of your mind that 0:13 says, "Hey, maybe you shouldn't open 0:15 that door." Valeria Marquez had that 0:18 feeling. But by the time she listened to 0:20 it, it tragically was all too late. If 0:23 you don't know who that is, Valyria was 0:25 a rising influencer in Mexico and she 0:27 was beautiful, confident, smart, and 0:29 hardworking. She was becoming quite 0:31 popular, too, and tens of thousands of 0:33 people would tune in to her every day on 0:35 Tik Tok. Now, this day, which was just a 0:37 regular day in May of 2025, began like 0:40 any other workday. Valyria was walking 0:42 to the salon, which she ran and owned, 0:44 just usual routine stuff. But as she 0:47 walked through those front doors, 0:49 something immediately seemed off. 0:51 Someone had stopped by earlier. 0:52 Apparently, a man said he had a package 0:54 for her. But the strange thing is nobody 0:57 knew who he was or what the package 0:59 could be. I mean, Valyria even admitted 1:01 that she hadn't ordered anything. Weird, 1:04 right? Later that day, and while she was 1:06 live streaming, just chatting casually 1:08 with her audience, she actually brought 1:10 it up. She looked confused and a little 1:12 unsettled and even said on camera, 1:15 "That's strange. I didn't order 1:16 anything." But curiosity has a way of 1:19 beating caution. And so she waited. She 1:21 stayed on live stream. And when that man 1:23 came walking back, everything changed 1:26 because right there in the middle of 1:28 that live stream and in full view of her 1:30 entire audience, Valyria was murdered in 1:32 cold blood. This was almost certainly 1:35 calculated, and everyone was there to 1:38 see it in real time. At first, there 1:40 were actually people who believed it was 1:41 a twisted prank or some sort of skit. 1:44 But over time, the facts revealed 1:46 themselves, and people soon realized 1:48 that whoever did this knew exactly what 1:50 they were doing. Today's case is one of 1:52 the most chilling intersections between 1:54 content and crime. A moment where the 1:57 screen stopped becoming a barrier and 1:59 reality hit hard instead. And trust me, 2:02 it is not just Valyriia. In recent 2:04 years, live stream homicides have surged 2:06 across the world with influencers, 2:08 streamers, and everyday people becoming 2:10 victims while the camera still rolls. 2:12 And every time this happens, not only 2:14 does it shake a community, but it raises 2:17 serious questions about privacy. So 2:19 today, we're going to do something a 2:21 little bit different on this channel and 2:23 look at this newfound phenomenon. We'll 2:24 begin with Valyria's case, and then look 2:26 at a few other stories that have 2:28 happened in recent years. And not only 2:30 will we look at the motive and 2:31 psychological factors behind each 2:33 killer, but we'll take a look at the 2:34 societal and cultural ones, too, and see 2:37 if there is anything we can do to stop 2:38 this trend. Welcome back to Coffee House 2:41 Crime, folks. My name is Adrian and if 2:43 you like true crime with the heaviness 2:45 it deserves, then please consider 2:46 subscribing. Now, with that said, please 2:49 grab yourself a coffee. This is the case 2:52 of Valyriia Marquez and the live stream 2:57 [Music] 3:06 murders. Before the fame, the followers, 3:09 and the flashing lights, Valyriia 3:11 Marquez was just a small girl from 3:12 Heliscoco. Born in 2001, she grew up in 3:16 a modest household on the outskirts of 3:18 Guadalara. Her mother worked long hours 3:20 while her father was often absent, and 3:22 Valyria, both brighteyed and stubborn, 3:25 learned early how to hold her own. She 3:27 was the kind of girl who turned school 3:29 uniforms into fashion statements, and 3:31 one who knew how to draw attention. By 3:34 her late teens, she had carved out a 3:36 space online, and what started with 3:38 makeup tutorials in her bedroom mirror, 3:40 which were shot on a cracked iPhone and 3:42 lit with fairy lights, would soon turn 3:44 into something far larger. She seemed to 3:47 have that spark, and before she knew it, 3:49 she had become a rising influencer in 3:52 Guadallayara. After that, her platforms 3:54 would grow quickly, and by 2023, her Tik 3:57 Tok and her Instagram had become rather 3:59 recognizable. 4:02 But Valyria was smart. She didn't want 4:04 to rely solely on her platforms. And so 4:07 instead, she used them to her advantage 4:09 to build her own tangible empire. That 4:11 is when she conceived the idea of having 4:13 her own salon. And fast forward several 4:16 months, she had used the money she had 4:17 earned through her platforms and more 4:19 specifically through sponsorships to 4:21 found Blossom, the beauty lounge. 4:23 Blossom was the result of all of her 4:25 hard work. And for a young woman of only 4:28 23 years old, she was doing it all. She 4:30 was a model, an entrepreneur, a business 4:33 manager, and an influencer. Some that 4:35 many people in her age would consider a 4:38 symbol of self-made success. On her 4:40 Instagram page, now with more than half 4:42 a million followers, Valyria can be 4:44 found posing in her business scrubs on 4:46 top of luxurious yachts and even on 4:49 board private jets. Meanwhile, on Tik 4:51 Tok, she had amassed over 110,000 4:54 followers. But behind the glossy reels 4:57 and the storefront, there were now 4:59 whispers. And in the early months of 5:01 2025, many of Valyria's friends claimed 5:04 that she had become more nervous. She 5:06 looked over her shoulder more often, 5:08 would cancel appointments last minute, 5:10 and even more concerningly would create 5:13 cryptic stories on her Instagram, which 5:15 often expressed feelings of betrayal, 5:17 anger, and danger. It is quite evident 5:19 that there were all sorts of bad things 5:21 going on for Valyria. She would 5:23 sometimes talk about fake friends and 5:25 even a bad relationship gone wrong. But 5:27 what is worse is that sometimes she 5:29 would highlight that she was being 5:31 threatened. Now all of this information 5:33 was kept between Valyria and her friends 5:35 and she would never talk about this 5:36 online, at least not directly. 5:39 Meanwhile, on the internet, she would 5:41 simply just smile for the camera and 5:43 persevere. Of course, until one day 5:46 everything 5:48 stopped. That day would be May the 13th, 5:52 2025. It is hard to know how exactly the 5:55 morning began for Valyria, but many 5:57 believe that she must have received some 5:59 bad news between the evening before and 6:01 the moment she walked to the store. She 6:03 had started her morning stream by saying 6:05 that she was very tired. And some of her 6:08 viewers could even tell that something 6:09 was on her mind. But the truth is that 6:12 we don't quite know what she was worried 6:14 about, if anything at all. All that we 6:16 do know is that it's clear that she was 6:18 not prepared for the afternoon ahead. 6:20 After live streaming that morning, 6:22 Valyria returned to her salon found in 6:24 Zapopan, which is 10 miles west of 6:26 Guadlara. And after serving a few 6:28 clients that day, she once again 6:30 returned to live streaming. Now, at 6:32 first, everything did seem normal. She 6:35 was holding a plush toy while she 6:36 chatted casually to her fans. But even 6:39 still, you could tell that Valyria did 6:41 seem to be uneasy. It is in that moment 6:44 that she told her fans about an unusual 6:46 encounter. Someone had visited the salon 6:49 while she was out that morning, claiming 6:51 that they had an expensive gift for her. 6:53 This was odd because Valyria had not 6:55 ordered anything online. Not only that, 6:58 but she wasn't expecting a present from 7:00 anyone. The driver would apparently 7:02 reattempt delivery later that afternoon, 7:04 and her friend, who was with her at the 7:06 time and in the salon, had also told 7:09 Valyria to sit tight and wait. It was 7:11 only a couple of minutes later and 7:13 several minutes into the stream that 7:15 everything changed. After noticing a man 7:17 with a box approached the shop, you can 7:19 see that Valyria looked towards the 7:21 door. Moments later, a man entered the 7:24 salon where viewers could hear him ask 7:26 one question, that being, "Are you 7:28 Valyriia?" And before she could respond, 7:30 he pulled out a gun. Censoring the video 7:33 from here on out, the gunman then fired 7:36 three shots into Valyria with one 7:38 hitting her chest, one to the neck, and 7:40 one to the head. She then collapsed, 7:43 dying instantly. And although the stream 7:45 continued for several more moments, it 7:47 would then abruptly end, but only after 7:50 the camera had captured a glimpse of her 7:52 friend switching it off. And I don't 7:54 know about you, but she does not seem 7:56 particularly shocked either. 8:01 Emergency services arrived quickly, but 8:03 sadly there was no chance of saving 8:05 Valyria. The gunman fled to the scene 8:07 immediately with a getaway driver on a 8:10 motorbike waiting for him outside. And 8:12 at the time of making this video, no 8:15 arrests have been made. This story is 8:18 already devastating, but if you think 8:20 that it ends here, think again. because 8:22 the rumors surrounding her death, the 8:24 culture that shaped it, and the way that 8:26 the internet responded will leave you 8:31 horrified. So, with this case happening 8:33 very recently, let's first begin with 8:35 the rumors. Now, word is on the street 8:37 that Valyria had actually found herself 8:39 in a romantic relationship with a man 8:42 who is known to be quite dangerous, and 8:44 his name is Ricardo Velasco, also known 8:47 as DoubleR. From what we know, doubleR 8:49 is a high-ranking member of the 8:51 Haliscoco cartel, meaning that Valyriia 8:53 could have been romantically connected 8:55 to one of the most dangerous men in the 8:57 country. Now, it's speculated that 8:59 Ricardo grew jealous of Valyria when he 9:01 noticed that so many of her fans were 9:03 buying her expensive gifts, and that 9:06 apparently led to a breakdown in the 9:08 relationship. And so, many people 9:10 believe that he actually planned to have 9:12 her assassinated, hiring a couple of his 9:14 thugs in the cartel to take her out for 9:16 him. So, you might be wondering, why 9:19 would he do such a thing? Because not 9:21 only does that seem to be extremely 9:22 brazen, but also way over the top. 9:25 Unfortunately, this comes down to 9:27 cultural and societal factors within 9:29 Mexico. And so, on that note, let's take 9:32 a look at their murder rate. By the way, 9:34 I find this stat to be absolutely 9:36 insane. But in Mexico, a staggering 96% 9:39 of all murders will go unpunished. It 9:41 seems that the main reasons for this are 9:43 corruption and several state 9:45 deficiencies. and with a mere 4% chance 9:48 of getting caught and put in prison for 9:50 murder. This does seem to give 9:51 tremendous power to gang members and 9:53 other violent people. So, it is 9:56 certainly possible that if someone has 9:57 the means and they are willing to hedge 9:59 their bets, then they will gladly bet on 10:02 murder. We also need to talk about 10:04 femicide here or gender-based violence. 10:07 Because in Mexico, it is not just the 10:09 staggering levels of impunity that allow 10:11 it to thrive, but also a deeply 10:14 ingrained culture of hyper masculinity 10:16 that fuels it. Add corruption into the 10:19 mix where police often turn a blind eye 10:21 to both gang violence and crimes against 10:23 women, and tragically you are left with 10:26 a recipe for absolute disaster. 10:28 Authorities are currently investigating 10:30 this as a possible femicide, which to be 10:32 honest does seem like a very fair 10:34 assumption. They believe her killer did 10:36 not know her personally, mainly because 10:38 he had to ask her for her name. So on 10:41 one hand, this could have been a 10:42 deranged fan, but on the other, it might 10:45 also have been a hit, a murder for hire. 10:48 To add to this story, there are also 10:50 alleged leaked messages which are now 10:52 circulating online. messages which 10:54 claimed that one of Valyria's friends 10:56 might have been involved. Now, that 10:58 theory does make sense considering it 11:00 was her friend who ended the live stream 11:02 after Valyria was shot. And if you 11:04 remember, she seemed to look very 11:06 nonchalant when she turned off the 11:08 camera. Now, according to these 11:09 messages, it seems that her friend was 11:11 afraid of being caught. And if they are 11:14 to be believed, then several people may 11:16 have conspired to see Valyria dead. But 11:18 what makes this even more disturbing is 11:20 what happened after she was murdered. 11:22 The video of Valyria's death can still 11:24 be found everywhere online, not only 11:27 being easily found on Telegram and X, 11:30 but other websites, too. I think it took 11:32 me all of 10 seconds to find, which is 11:34 just absolutely maddening. This entire 11:37 story is horrifying, in fact. And 11:39 honestly, I feel so sorry for Valyria 11:41 because she was failed in life and then 11:43 again in death. I mean, her story shines 11:45 a light on so many deeply rooted and 11:48 disgusting modern-day issues, including 11:50 gender-based violence, Mexico's impunity 11:52 rate, victim blaming, and the sheer lack 11:55 of accountability on social media 11:57 platforms. And so, although this case is 11:59 unsolved, do I think we should be 12:01 talking about it here? Yes, absolutely. 12:04 There are so many problems here. Now, 12:06 obviously, social media cannot stop 12:08 violence from happening in real time. 12:10 However, one thing they can control is 12:12 how much it is amplified after the fact. 12:14 And that is something that they 12:16 consistently fail to moderate. It's not 12:18 just about trying to moderate that 12:20 content, but also all of the hateful 12:22 comments that follow. And sadly, this 12:24 case is not so unique either, and there 12:26 are so many stories like this already 12:28 out there. Now, I won't talk about this 12:30 one for too long because I've already 12:32 covered it only a few weeks ago, but 12:34 many of you will be aware of the story 12:36 of Ireie Satau. 12:38 [Music] 12:44 On the morning of March the 11th, 2025, 12:47 22-year-old Japanese live streamer Ireie 12:50 Sato was fatally stabbed while live 12:52 streaming in Tokyo's Takadanaba 12:54 district. It was shortly before 10:00 12:57 a.m. when she was murdered while 12:58 recording herself walking a full loop of 13:00 the Yamanotei line. Her killer, who was 13:03 identified as 42-year-old Kenichi 13:05 Takano, made no effort to flee from the 13:08 crime scene after stabbing her several 13:11 times. However, what makes this case so 13:13 interesting is the backstory behind 13:15 these two. I do want to say that I never 13:18 deserved to die, but she did severely 13:20 wrong Kenichi in the past, and that's 13:22 what makes this story a revenge killing. 13:25 As the story goes, Kenichi claimed that 13:28 he had lent Ahri more than 2 million 13:30 yen, which is equivalent to roughly 13:33 13,500 over the course of several 13:35 months. And when she failed to repay 13:38 him, well, that's when things got ugly. 13:41 This included her ignoring a court order 13:43 which ruled that she had to pay him back 13:45 and even ridiculing him on live stream. 13:48 Several weeks later, I sustained 13:50 multiple stab wounds to her face, neck, 13:53 and torso. She was then rushed to the 13:55 nearby hospital, but tragically was 13:58 pronounced dead shortly after arrival. 14:01 Authorities could then confirm that the 14:02 cause of her death included a fatal 14:04 injury to her 14:07 neck. After being arrested, Kenichi 14:09 admitted that it was quite easy to track 14:11 her down because all he had to do was 14:13 follow her live stream. Not only that, 14:15 but she made it quite obvious that she 14:17 was touring the Amotei line because 14:18 she'd mentioned it several times. No 14:21 surprise, but this incident sparked 14:22 widespread concern over the safety and 14:24 privacy of live streamers. Now, of 14:26 course, this is not an isolated event, 14:28 and there are plenty of other streamers 14:30 out there who have already experienced 14:32 this problem. And so, on a lighter note, 14:34 there is no better time than to talk 14:36 about streamer Johnny Somali. Johnny's 14:38 the kind of guy who lowers the average 14:40 IQ of any room he enters, including 14:42 empty ones. And when he was targeted, 14:44 there was kind of a reason for it. 14:47 Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ramsay 14:50 Isma, is notorious for his provocative 14:52 and disgusting behavior abroad. His 14:55 content typically involves provoking 14:56 locals, mocking cultures, and 14:59 deliberately stirring controversy in the 15:01 name of views. While the shock value 15:03 format is not new to streaming, Johnny 15:06 seems to have taken it to an extreme. 15:08 Most of you will know him already, but 15:10 during his time in Japan, he 15:12 deliberately antagonized bystanders by 15:14 shouting phrases like Hiroshima Nagasaki 15:16 in crowded areas. In another incident, 15:19 he entered libraries and subways only to 15:21 shout racist or obscene phrases and 15:23 intentionally tried to disrupt the 15:25 peace. Throughout this time, he was 15:27 repeatedly detained by police in Japan, 15:30 including a brief arrest in Osaka in 15:32 2023, which then led to his deportation 15:35 from the country and a ban on 15:38 re-entering. And so, what did he do 15:41 next? He went to South 15:44 Korea. In late 2024, his actions in 15:47 South Korea drew massive backlash. One 15:49 of his most notoriously disgusting acts 15:52 was mocking the Statue of Peace, which, 15:54 if you didn't know, commemorates Korean 15:56 victims of wartime and sexual slavery. 15:59 No surprise, but the response from 16:01 locals was fierce, and public outrage 16:03 reached a boiling point. In fact, it 16:05 would ultimately end with Korean 16:07 YouTuber and former Navy Seal Dalan Yu 16:10 beating the bologoney out of him. The 16:12 vast majority of people seem to agree 16:14 that Johnny had that punch coming. But 16:16 whether you agree or disagree if the 16:18 assault was justified or not, what 16:21 really seems to stand out here is that 16:23 yet again, a streamer was not only 16:25 tracked down, but then physically 16:27 attacked. And yet again, social media 16:30 failed to step in before it got too far. 16:33 I mean, let's be honest here. Johnny 16:35 should have never been monetized for 16:37 this kind of slop in the first place. 16:39 Not only did platforms allow him to 16:40 profit off of cultural disrespect and 16:42 harassment, but they gave him a 16:44 megaphone in the process. And the result 16:46 was that tens of thousands of people 16:48 were offended and Johnny got a black 16:50 eye. Following the punch, Dalgian was 16:52 fined 16:53 $7,000 for the assault. But the internet 16:56 simply was not having it. Support poured 16:58 in and his fees were basically covered 17:00 by hundreds of donations. And this even 17:02 included a $4,000 donation from YouTuber 17:06 Donut Operator. God bless you, sir. 17:08 Meanwhile, Johnny faces legal troubles 17:10 of his own. In fact, he's actually stuck 17:12 in Korea while he faces multiple charges 17:15 for his disruptive behavior. I think 17:17 that's just good karma. As for Dalganu, 17:20 he would later say that he just did what 17:21 any Korean citizen would do. And 17:24 considering the amount of support he's 17:25 received, it looks like most people 17:27 agree. Back into the world of rivalry, 17:29 there is one other case that I would 17:31 like to talk about today which I've 17:32 known for a couple years but have never 17:34 had the opportunity to discuss and that 17:36 is the case of Ganso Jong, also known as 17:39 Fatty Goes to 17:45 Africa. Ganso Jong was not your typical 17:48 content creator. He wasn't flashy, 17:51 wasn't chasing trends, and was not 17:53 trying to be special. And yet, despite 17:55 his candid nature, he captured the 17:58 hearts of millions of people. Better 18:00 known online as Fatty Goes to Africa, 18:02 Gan was a Chinese live streamer who had 18:05 carved out a niche by doing something 18:07 refreshingly simple. He shared the world 18:09 through his own eyes and ears. A rather 18:12 stocky guy with a beaming smile and a 18:15 bottomless appetite, Gan traveled 18:17 through countries that most influencers 18:19 skipped over. Africa was his canvas. Its 18:22 people, its street food, and its vibrant 18:25 everyday life were all documented in 18:27 real time for his fans back in China. 18:30 Whether he was sampling something wildly 18:32 spicy from a street vendor or simply 18:34 laughing with a local who barely spoke 18:36 his language, Gan seemed to make you 18:38 feel like you were right there beside 18:40 him. And it worked because by late 2022, 18:44 he had amassed nearly 5 million 18:46 followers on Chinese platforms like Dian 18:49 and Koshu. His fans called him Little 18:52 Fatty, a nickname that seemed to somehow 18:54 capture both affection and charm. And 18:56 with his popularity, it is no surprise 18:58 to learn that tens of thousands of 19:00 people tuned in daily to see where he 19:02 would wander to next. But it wasn't just 19:05 the destinations that kept people coming 19:07 back. It was Gan himself because he was 19:09 genuine and unfiltered. You could feel 19:12 the curiosity in his voice and the 19:14 warmth behind his grin. And off camera, 19:17 those who knew him described him as 19:18 generous, endlessly curious, and always 19:21 up for one more adventure. But behind 19:24 the streams, and behind the easy 19:25 laughter and cultural snapshots, there 19:28 was something that his followers never 19:30 saw. Gan had made an enemy, someone who 19:33 had stood beside him, but now carried a 19:36 dangerous grudge. And as we will soon 19:38 learn, that grudge would follow him 19:40 halfway across the world. 19:46 To understand how a live stream could 19:48 end in murder, we must first rewind back 19:51 to a time when he met a man named Fang 19:53 Shangyong. So, Gan met Fang during one 19:56 of his travels through Africa. And since 19:58 both of them were Chinese nationals and 20:00 also content creators, things started 20:02 off quite well. In fact, Gan would even 20:04 help Fang during his earlier years, not 20:06 only giving him advice, but also helping 20:08 him grow an audience. and as a larger 20:11 creator lending a hand to a smaller one 20:13 that was incredibly beneficial for Fang. 20:16 However, that mentorship was not 20:17 sustainable because as it turns out, the 20:20 two had wildly different personalities. 20:22 And hey, there's nothing unusual or even 20:24 bad about that. Sometimes it just takes 20:26 a while to figure these things out. But 20:29 Fang wasn't the type to accept rejection 20:31 or second place. And when Gan's 20:33 following turned into the millions, he 20:35 started to grow bitter. No one is sure 20:37 what precisely happened afterwards, but 20:39 there are rumors that there were many 20:40 feuds between the two, and being the 20:43 resentful man that Fang is, he was not 20:45 prepared to let 20:47 go. It was around this time that Fang 20:50 began to spread accusations. He began to 20:53 claim that apparently Gan would poison 20:55 his food with COVID, had stolen his 20:57 money to buy a mobile phone, and had 20:59 even hired people to trash his house. It 21:02 is worth noting that none of this was 21:04 ever proven, but it did paint a picture 21:06 of someone who seemed to be spiraling 21:08 into obsession by the end of 2022. And 21:11 what had initially began as a friendship 21:13 had now turned into a dangerous rivalry, 21:16 one that seemed to be laced with 21:18 paranoia, jealousy, and deep-seated 21:20 hatred. Yan, for his part, did seem to 21:23 brush it off and never made any issue of 21:25 it online. He kept traveling, kept 21:28 streaming, and never showed much 21:29 concern. Maybe he thought that all of it 21:32 was just noise. And Fang, well, that 21:35 anger seemed to be eating him alive. And 21:38 soon, instead of keeping their feud 21:40 private, he would turn it into something 21:42 very 21:46 public. The date was December 4th, 2022, 21:50 and just another day on the road for 21:52 Gan. By now, he was in Katmandeue in 21:54 Nepal, live streaming from the heart of 21:56 the city. The air was bright and the 21:59 market was alive with color. And Gan, 22:01 who was joined by his two companions, a 22:04 fellow Chinese traveler Lee Chuan and a 22:06 local guide, wandered through the busy 22:08 streets of Indrachow Square, a maze of 22:11 temples, vendors, and curious tourists. 22:13 As usual, Gan was upbeat, cracking 22:16 jokes, chatting with friends, and 22:18 showing off the food stalls and street 22:20 scenes. Thousands of viewers had tuned 22:22 in live, watching him as he laughed and 22:24 explored with his people. Just another 22:27 carefree stream from Fatty Goes to 22:29 Africa. Or so it seemed. Just out of 22:32 frame and unknown to him at the time, 22:34 Fang was just behind him, watching from 22:37 a distance. Instead of playing the rest 22:39 of the video here, I'm just going to 22:41 loop the non-violent part. But only 22:43 moments later, viewers heard a scream 22:45 while the camera jolted. Shaky footage 22:48 would catch a flash of panic. And then 22:50 there was chaos. Some people believed 22:52 that Gan had tripped, while others were 22:55 not sure what they were seeing. But the 22:57 screams, they were unmistakable. Right 23:00 there in the middle of the street, he 23:02 had been stabbed in the chest and 23:03 stomach by his former friend and PR. And 23:07 as Gan's phone fell to the floor, the 23:09 live stream spun before it cut to 23:14 black. In a matter of seconds, a 23:17 light-hearted travel vlog had turned 23:19 into something far more serious. This 23:22 was now an active murder in progress, 23:24 broadcasted live for thousands to see. 23:27 Meanwhile, Fang decided not to run. 23:30 Instead, he was pacing around while 23:32 yelling horrible things like, "You 23:34 should have died long ago." Amidst the 23:37 chaos, Gan's friend Lee had also been 23:39 stabbed, who lay nearby, crying out for 23:41 someone to help him. Eventually, locals 23:44 stepped in. Some rushed to Gan's side 23:46 while others tackled Fang to hold him 23:48 down until the police arrived. Within 23:51 minutes, sirens blared through the 23:53 market. Paramedics then lifted Gan into 23:55 an ambulance and rushed him to the 23:57 National Trauma Center. Back online, 24:00 thousands of fans were still shocked. 24:02 The live stream had cut off so suddenly, 24:04 and many were still left wondering if 24:06 what they saw was actually real or some 24:09 horrifying hoax. Messages poured in on 24:11 his liveream asking, "Is Gan okay?" And 24:14 was that real? For a few hours, there 24:17 was hope. But sadly, later that night, 24:20 the news unfortunately broke that he had 24:22 died from his injuries. And despite the 24:24 emergency surgery that he was given, the 24:27 stab wounds that he had received were 24:29 simply too 24:33 catastrophic. Although his friend Lee 24:36 spent several days in critical 24:37 condition, he would eventually pull 24:39 through. So physically he recovered, but 24:42 emotionally that's another story. 24:44 Meanwhile, Fang was obviously arrested 24:46 on the spot and apparently he still had 24:49 the knife in his hand. Police took him 24:51 into custody where they then charged him 24:53 with murder and attempted murder. So 24:56 circling back to our recurring theme 24:57 here, Fang admitted that he had tracked 24:59 Gan through his liveream and then struck 25:01 him at the optimal time. In addition to 25:03 this, it is also worth acknowledging 25:05 that he has shown no remorse in his 25:07 actions and doesn't deny them either. 25:09 And so although he is yet to stand 25:11 trial, he will very likely spend life 25:13 behind bars. Meanwhile, the news of 25:16 Gan's death dominated social media. And 25:18 the story was so devastating that it 25:20 even traversed language barriers and hit 25:22 Western media. It would even become one 25:24 of the most talked about true crime 25:26 cases in China. Not simply because it 25:29 was shocking, but because it was 25:30 painfully deeply human. 25:36 You have to understand that Gan's murder 25:38 did not simply take a life, but shook an 25:41 entire industry. To see someone killed 25:43 in real time while streaming to tens of 25:45 thousands of people is simply horrible. 25:48 And it forced a harsh question into the 25:50 spotlight. How safe are content creators 25:53 really? In China, where live streaming 25:55 is absolutely massive and often a 25:57 full-time job, this was a wake-up call. 26:00 influencers suddenly had to reckon with 26:02 the dark side of internet fame, where 26:04 clout, competition, and envy aren't 26:06 simply online dramas, but have very real 26:09 consequences, too. For streamers, this 26:12 was personal. Many admitted that they 26:14 regularly shared their live locations 26:15 without ever giving it second thought, 26:18 something that Gan often did. But after 26:20 this, well, that all seemed to change. 26:23 Some began to call for stream delays or 26:25 safer ways to film in public. This 26:28 seeming to be the only possible solution 26:30 so that they could not be tracked in 26:32 real time. Unlike Western platforms, 26:34 Chinese platforms seemed to scrub the 26:36 footage almost immediately. Regulators 26:39 were praised for their quick response. 26:41 But all the same, they also used this 26:43 moment to push for tighter conduct. 26:46 Suddenly, the pressure wasn't only on 26:48 creators, but on the platforms 26:50 themselves. And unfortunately, this 26:52 pressure is yet to be addressed by 26:54 anyone. 26:56 And what about us, the viewers? How do 26:59 we deal with the psychological impact of 27:00 watching someone we know die live on 27:03 camera? Well, shock and morbid curiosity 27:05 aside, it is actually quite harsh to 27:08 tell. While some people say this merely 27:10 desensitizes them, others say that they 27:12 require therapy. What we do know is that 27:15 live streamed murders do seem to force 27:16 us to confront the hard truths about our 27:19 societies because quite bluntly, there 27:21 is no way around it. And I'm just going 27:23 to put it out there, but for example, it 27:25 shines a harsh spotlight on Mexico's 27:27 gender-based violence. All of these 27:29 stories show the need for greater 27:31 caution. And through this investigation, 27:33 I think that is the main thing to take 27:35 away here, that all social media 27:37 platforms require more 27:46 moderation. Before I go, I think we need 27:48 to take this moment to remember the 27:50 lives lost in these stories. It is very 27:53 easy to become numb to headlines, but we 27:55 must not forget these people. All of 27:57 which were taken in moments that the 27:59 whole world was never meant to see. 28:01 Valyriia, Ari, and Gan were more than 28:04 just content creators. They all had 28:06 full, complex, and emotional lives 28:08 beyond the screen. Lives that were cut 28:11 short simply because they dared to share 28:13 them 28:15 online. And I think that's pretty much 28:17 all I have today, folks. I just wanted 28:19 to spark some discussion here because 28:21 honestly this topic has been on my mind 28:23 for a while. Before you go, I do have 28:25 two questions for you. To begin with, do 28:27 you think we can ever stop live streamed 28:29 violence from happening? And if not, 28:32 what are the ways that we can curb or 28:34 prevent it? This format was slightly 28:36 different to the usual while I'm trying 28:38 to experiment with new things. And so, 28:40 it always helps if you let me know what 28:41 you think. With all of that said, if 28:43 you'd like to share your thoughts or 28:44 opinions, please leave something in the 28:46 comments down below. And also if you'd 28:48 like to support me in the channel, check 28:49 out my Patreon here or alternatively my 28:52 social media here. And look who's joined 28:54 me in the final moments. I think all of 28:56 you would do a nearer update. Anyway, 28:58 all right, I think that's me done for 29:00 today, folks. Thank you so much for 29:01 watching. I really do appreciate it. And 29:03 as always, I'll see you again very soon 29:05 in another video. Until that moment 29:06 arrives, though, remember to look after 29:08 yourselves, look after each other, and 29:10 stay curious. Thank you. Take care. 29:12 Goodbye.
