And Lord, I'm asking you to highlight 00:00:38.229 --> 00:00:43.090 this word in your truth and by your spirit. Lord, 00:00:43.229 --> 00:00:45.509 we're going to take a look and dive deep into 00:00:45.509 --> 00:00:50.469 the scriptures. Lord, remove from us every excuse 00:00:50.469 --> 00:00:53.929 and every area that we would distance ourselves. 00:00:54.390 --> 00:00:59.270 Let your word have its full impact. But turn to 1 00:01:32.180 --> 00:01:39.180 Corinthians. 1 Corinthians, verse 23 of chapter 00:01:39.180 --> 00:01:43.239 11. Last time we had communion, we kind of talked 00:01:43.239 --> 00:01:46.599 about this passage. We've been in a series, kind 00:01:46.599 --> 00:01:50.859 of a deep series, going from Passover, Jesus' 00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:54.299 teaching in the New Testament, connecting Passover 00:01:54.299 --> 00:02:00.299 to Pentecost. And as we have kind of dove into 00:02:00.299 --> 00:02:03.040 the scriptures at each communion service, talking 00:02:03.040 --> 00:02:07.359 about the reality of how Passover has led us 00:02:07.359 --> 00:02:11.139 into the full understanding of what we operate 00:02:11.139 --> 00:02:16.060 now at the Lord's table. The end of something 00:02:16.060 --> 00:02:19.020 started something brand new, although it has 00:02:19.020 --> 00:02:22.819 its root systems in that table. Jesus became 00:02:22.819 --> 00:02:27.379 the Passover lamb. He fulfilled it. And at Jesus's 00:02:27.379 --> 00:02:32.300 table, he did what? He inaugurated the new covenant. 00:02:32.520 --> 00:02:37.199 So as the apostle Paul is dealing with the church 00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:40.500 in Corinth. Now you have to understand this church 00:02:40.500 --> 00:02:45.469 in Corinth is a wily bunch. Right? They're Gentiles. 00:02:45.509 --> 00:02:48.370 So you have to understand, everywhere the apostle 00:02:48.370 --> 00:02:52.030 Paul went, he went first to. He went first to 00:02:52.030 --> 00:02:54.550 the Jew, and then he went to the Greek. It was 00:02:54.550 --> 00:02:57.810 the sign of his apostleship. He would go to the 00:02:57.810 --> 00:03:00.710 synagogue. He would reason in the synagogue that 00:03:00.710 --> 00:03:04.030 Jesus, in fact, was the Messiah. And when they, 00:03:04.050 --> 00:03:07.110 in turn, would reject him, then what would happen? 00:03:07.210 --> 00:03:09.830 Then he would say, all right. I leave you to 00:03:09.830 --> 00:03:12.409 yourself and I will go to the Gentiles for they 00:03:12.409 --> 00:03:15.669 will hear it. And that was his pattern in everything 00:03:15.669 --> 00:03:19.650 he did in every missionary journey. And so Paul 00:03:19.650 --> 00:03:22.490 was a, if we were to call it just this way, Scott, 00:03:22.610 --> 00:03:29.229 he would be a doctorate. professor squared. When 00:03:29.229 --> 00:03:32.949 he said he was studied of studied under Gamaliel, 00:03:33.069 --> 00:03:36.090 he was a, even said it of himself, I was a Pharisee 00:03:36.090 --> 00:03:39.069 of Pharisees. Now to be a Pharisee of Pharisee, 00:03:39.069 --> 00:03:42.050 you weren't just, didn't just memorize the whole 00:03:42.050 --> 00:03:45.810 Bible at that point. They had it memorized. Like 00:03:45.810 --> 00:03:51.629 in school, you could quote full chapters and 00:03:51.629 --> 00:03:57.490 books that, because remember most, Most synagogues 00:03:57.490 --> 00:04:04.689 did not have full range of scrolls of the full 00:04:04.689 --> 00:04:08.870 manuscripts of God. There were certain synagogues 00:04:08.870 --> 00:04:11.689 that did, such as Jesus' hometown, where they 00:04:11.689 --> 00:04:15.710 handed him the full scroll of Isaiah. But a lot 00:04:15.710 --> 00:04:19.290 of synagogues only had partial scrolls. They 00:04:19.290 --> 00:04:22.230 didn't have everything of the 39, if you will, 00:04:22.269 --> 00:04:25.930 39 books of all the minor prophets, major prophets. 00:04:26.089 --> 00:04:31.610 They all had sections of the Torah and the Pentateuch 00:04:31.610 --> 00:04:34.050 that they would quote Moses of all his writings. 00:04:34.230 --> 00:04:36.709 But many of them didn't have all of the things 00:04:36.709 --> 00:04:38.810 that we now so enjoy when we look through the 00:04:38.810 --> 00:04:41.449 Bible and go, oh, there's 39 old and now there's 00:04:41.449 --> 00:04:46.639 a 27 new. They didn't have that. Paul was studied 00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:50.600 in all of it. He would have been known in today's 00:04:50.600 --> 00:04:55.699 culture and mind as at least a double PhD, maybe 00:04:55.699 --> 00:04:59.399 a triple PhD. And I've read some books by triple 00:04:59.399 --> 00:05:04.319 PhDs and they are so heady sometimes. It's like. 00:05:04.699 --> 00:05:07.740 Okay, can you stay grounded a little bit and 00:05:07.740 --> 00:05:10.500 just speak to us in lay terms? But once you get 00:05:10.500 --> 00:05:12.339 there and you're studying the minutia of the 00:05:12.339 --> 00:05:15.680 law, he was fluent in Arabic, he was fluent in 00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:19.899 Koinonia Greek, and he was fluent in Hebrew. 00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:25.819 So he was a scholar at every level. And he was 00:05:25.819 --> 00:05:34.129 a scholar in the word, How do I say this? He 00:05:34.129 --> 00:05:37.449 was a scholar in the hermeneutics of the word. 00:05:37.550 --> 00:05:44.329 He was a scholar in the very part of the minutia 00:05:44.329 --> 00:05:47.550 of everything connecting to the law of Moses 00:05:47.550 --> 00:05:51.189 until God brought him out of exclusive Hebrew 00:05:51.189 --> 00:05:55.550 understanding of the Pentateuch through the law 00:05:55.550 --> 00:05:58.949 of Moses and brought him as Jesus was the... 00:06:00.009 --> 00:06:04.430 The key to unlocking those scriptures, Paul had 00:06:04.430 --> 00:06:07.430 known everything with the law, how it interpreted 00:06:07.430 --> 00:06:10.750 without Jesus. He had to be reacquainted with 00:06:10.750 --> 00:06:13.649 everything now that it made sense with Jesus 00:06:13.649 --> 00:06:16.970 being the absolute reason the law was given. 00:06:17.250 --> 00:06:19.910 And so in that understanding, he now comes to 00:06:19.910 --> 00:06:22.430 Corinth. And just kind of like this group up 00:06:22.430 --> 00:06:28.370 here, over here, they had the the conservative 00:06:28.370 --> 00:06:32.589 one, and they had the wild one. And that was 00:06:32.589 --> 00:06:37.769 the Corinthian church. They had come out of everything 00:06:37.769 --> 00:06:42.709 except having really any understanding of Jehovah 00:06:42.709 --> 00:06:46.509 or Yahweh. They knew everything else about idolatry. 00:06:46.589 --> 00:06:48.689 They knew everything else about paganism. They 00:06:48.689 --> 00:06:50.550 knew everything else about how their culture 00:06:50.550 --> 00:06:55.569 was, but they did not know anything about how 00:06:55.569 --> 00:06:59.639 to serve the one true living God. They were bringing 00:06:59.639 --> 00:07:03.839 Greek culture that worshiped a pantheon of gods 00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:07.399 that worshiped, where you read the Iliad and 00:07:07.399 --> 00:07:09.959 the Odyssey and how many, I don't even want to 00:07:09.959 --> 00:07:12.279 know how many went to that movie, you know, just 00:07:12.279 --> 00:07:16.199 recently out there. But they would, the Hercules 00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:22.500 and the Dianus and the... Aphrodite and all of 00:07:22.500 --> 00:07:26.240 the pantheon of the skewedness of that, they 00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:29.579 lived for. So there were temples, Temple of Zeus, 00:07:29.860 --> 00:07:34.779 Temple of Diana, Aphrodite, all of this stuff, 00:07:34.920 --> 00:07:38.800 Bacchus, the god of feast and wine, drunkenness 00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:44.199 and sexual perversion. They would have participated 00:07:44.199 --> 00:07:48.100 in all of that thing. So when you're dealing 00:07:48.100 --> 00:07:51.100 with the Corinthian church, you're dealing with 00:07:51.100 --> 00:07:53.920 people that were coming straight out of what 00:07:53.920 --> 00:07:58.540 we would say whoa right they had they didn't 00:07:58.540 --> 00:08:00.639 like like Solomon they didn't restrain themselves 00:08:00.639 --> 00:08:03.839 they had no knowledge of the one true God so 00:08:03.839 --> 00:08:07.339 planting a church right in the middle of Corinth 00:08:07.339 --> 00:08:12.620 in a stronghold that they had every form of perversion 00:08:12.620 --> 00:08:15.279 and the town if you study the history of Corinth 00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:20.829 the town was was founded, and the reason Corinth 00:08:20.829 --> 00:08:24.990 was founded as a seaport town, the government 00:08:24.990 --> 00:08:27.089 said, well, we don't really have the ability 00:08:27.089 --> 00:08:29.310 to actually structure this town the way we'd 00:08:29.310 --> 00:08:32.169 like. Let's just ask all the retired sailors 00:08:32.169 --> 00:08:37.450 and military men to found a town. So if your 00:08:37.450 --> 00:08:41.649 founding fathers are former sailors and military 00:08:41.649 --> 00:08:45.220 people, We do have a little bit of understanding 00:08:45.220 --> 00:08:47.759 that when military people come to port, things 00:08:47.759 --> 00:08:51.419 happen not so good. Just think that that's why 00:08:51.419 --> 00:08:54.019 your town was founded. Your founding fathers 00:08:54.019 --> 00:08:58.379 were like, hey, drunkenness, women, or whatever, 00:08:58.679 --> 00:09:02.399 help yourself. We're open for business. That's 00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:07.759 where God decides to plant Paul for 18 months 00:09:07.759 --> 00:09:11.009 to plant a church and say, all right. Let's bring 00:09:11.009 --> 00:09:13.809 in the truth of the gospel and let's get a church. 00:09:14.149 --> 00:09:19.210 And Paul says, as the Holy Spirit would do its 00:09:19.210 --> 00:09:24.190 thing, they would be more gifted in the Holy 00:09:24.190 --> 00:09:29.909 Spirit in their moving and displaying of... partnering 00:09:29.909 --> 00:09:32.669 with the gifts of God than any other church at 00:09:32.669 --> 00:09:36.110 that time. But in doing so, they were more compromised 00:09:36.110 --> 00:09:38.970 and had mixture than any other church at that 00:09:38.970 --> 00:09:42.049 time. And so the whole reason that he's writing 00:09:42.049 --> 00:09:45.049 these letters, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, 00:09:45.230 --> 00:09:49.809 is to do what? He's pulling the weeds of different 00:09:49.809 --> 00:09:54.450 religion and idolatry and immorality and mixture 00:09:54.450 --> 00:09:58.110 and the abuse of how to use the Holy Spirit. 00:09:58.169 --> 00:10:00.259 He's pulling. all of this stuff out of her. Don't 00:10:00.259 --> 00:10:02.259 sue your brother. Why are you taking them to 00:10:02.259 --> 00:10:03.940 the court? Why are there arguments and divisions? 00:10:04.460 --> 00:10:07.960 In fact, I believe it. Why is Chloe and this 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:13.100 person arguing? Listen, stop it. The whole letter 00:10:13.100 --> 00:10:15.840 of 1 Corinthians is like, get your act together 00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:20.220 in Jesus' name. Right? And you just had to think 00:10:20.220 --> 00:10:23.200 of it from a PhD professor that his whole life 00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:25.440 had been trained. It's like, God, why did you 00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:29.009 pick me for this? I mean, these people are almost 00:10:29.009 --> 00:10:32.590 like animals, right? I mean, in his natural mind, 00:10:32.750 --> 00:10:38.950 he would have looked at Scott's lifestyle from 00:10:38.950 --> 00:10:41.509 haircut and everything, and he would have, no, 00:10:41.629 --> 00:10:44.149 I'm just messing. He would have just said, animal. 00:10:46.029 --> 00:10:49.649 Didn't even know God. And yet the Lord, like 00:10:49.649 --> 00:10:52.889 he did with Jonah, he did with Paul. I want you 00:10:52.889 --> 00:10:55.610 to go there and preach the gospel and set up 00:10:55.610 --> 00:11:00.830 a church. and bring my truth so that it will 00:11:00.830 --> 00:11:03.370 be a genuine house of the Lord, become a place 00:11:03.370 --> 00:11:07.289 where the pillar of truth is released and people 00:11:07.289 --> 00:11:09.450 find the transforming power of Christ there. 00:11:10.190 --> 00:11:13.580 It's amazing. So he had to weed through this 00:11:13.580 --> 00:11:16.879 stuff. Well, by the time we get, this is a long 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:19.240 introduction, so stay with me. So by the time 00:11:19.240 --> 00:11:23.139 we get to 1 Corinthians 11, remember we started 00:11:23.139 --> 00:11:26.919 in 1 Corinthians 5 of how he had to remove the 00:11:26.919 --> 00:11:30.580 one that was in severe idolatry and sexual perversion. 00:11:30.759 --> 00:11:33.600 And he said, listen, you have to take the bread 00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:35.779 and the cup in a clean place. That goes clear 00:11:35.779 --> 00:11:38.700 back. Christ is our Passover lamb. He's already 00:11:38.700 --> 00:11:40.759 dealt with that. When he gets to 1 Corinthians 00:11:40.759 --> 00:11:44.220 11, remember in six he deals with them not suing 00:11:44.220 --> 00:11:48.700 one another for they should be above that. Seven, 00:11:48.740 --> 00:11:51.460 he's dealing now with marriages. He gets all 00:11:51.460 --> 00:11:54.879 the way through seven. Eight, chapter eight and 00:11:54.879 --> 00:11:58.429 nine, he's dealing with his... apostolic authority 00:11:58.429 --> 00:12:03.169 and he's dealing with how to steward the grace 00:12:03.169 --> 00:12:07.070 of God and how in chapter 8 and 9 and how it 00:12:07.070 --> 00:12:09.850 is to give Tiffany touched on a little bit today 00:12:09.850 --> 00:12:13.269 of why God wrote on how a minister should make 00:12:13.269 --> 00:12:15.750 his living but he's talked more about the idea 00:12:15.750 --> 00:12:17.750 of partnering with Kim and when he gets to chapter 00:12:17.750 --> 00:12:21.549 10 he starts diving really into the kimchi on 00:12:21.549 --> 00:12:24.210 this thing and he starts dealing with mixture 00:12:24.210 --> 00:12:26.820 and he starts dealing with how the old Old Testament 00:12:26.820 --> 00:12:29.620 people, chapter 10 is probably one of the best 00:12:29.620 --> 00:12:32.059 chapters that you should read because it equates 00:12:32.059 --> 00:12:34.879 it. He said, these things that were done were 00:12:34.879 --> 00:12:38.340 written on account for those who the end of the 00:12:38.340 --> 00:12:41.679 ages fall. He's basically saying, these things 00:12:41.679 --> 00:12:44.659 that were written and recorded are all recorded 00:12:44.659 --> 00:12:47.519 for your sake and your faith to know how to live 00:12:47.519 --> 00:12:51.259 at the end of days. And so he recounts how the 00:12:51.259 --> 00:12:54.899 people fell in the journey and how. discipline 00:12:54.899 --> 00:12:58.379 came and how 23 ,000 were killed because they 00:12:58.379 --> 00:13:00.820 lusted after things that they shouldn't have 00:13:00.820 --> 00:13:03.259 lusted for. And then he goes into, in chapter 00:13:03.259 --> 00:13:05.759 10, he goes into the dividing between eating 00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:08.559 at different altars, eating at the altar of, 00:13:08.639 --> 00:13:13.399 he just used an altar of another God versus the 00:13:13.399 --> 00:13:16.460 altar when you come to the table. He's leading 00:13:16.460 --> 00:13:20.840 us up to really speaking about this communion 00:13:20.840 --> 00:13:23.830 table. And so he says, listen, do you not know 00:13:23.830 --> 00:13:26.450 that when you take things that are at the altar, 00:13:26.629 --> 00:13:30.549 listen to what he says, you're sharing the life 00:13:30.549 --> 00:13:34.549 of what's given at the altar. So if you eat at 00:13:34.549 --> 00:13:38.309 the table of Zeus and that altar, you're eating, 00:13:38.409 --> 00:13:42.990 he said, that idol is nothing, but the spirit 00:13:42.990 --> 00:13:46.220 behind it, he says, is a demon. So you're sharing 00:13:46.220 --> 00:13:49.519 the food and the sacrifice that you just went 00:13:49.519 --> 00:13:52.580 to that idol of Zeus with a demonic spirit. You're 00:13:52.580 --> 00:13:56.659 now saying, I am linking your life with my life. 00:13:58.179 --> 00:14:03.039 And then he compares it to the altar of Christ 00:14:03.039 --> 00:14:07.240 saying, Do you not know that the blood that we 00:14:07.240 --> 00:14:09.860 take from the cup is the blood of Christ? Do 00:14:09.860 --> 00:14:12.100 you not know that the bread that we eat is the 00:14:12.100 --> 00:14:15.519 body of Jesus? This is all in 1 Corinthians chapter 00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:22.720 10 right at about verse 20 and following. Praise 00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:28.960 God. Okay. He talks 00:15:14.019 --> 00:15:17.639 about the father, the son, headship of man and 00:15:17.639 --> 00:15:21.360 woman, and then the whole idea of honoring how 00:15:21.360 --> 00:15:23.440 man and woman, even though there's headship, 00:15:23.480 --> 00:15:27.059 there should be authority, for every man comes 00:15:27.059 --> 00:15:31.480 from a woman. She gives birth to all things. 00:15:31.620 --> 00:15:34.259 Therefore, there's headship, but then there's 00:15:34.259 --> 00:15:38.299 partnership in life. There's honor in how God 00:15:38.299 --> 00:15:42.059 designed it. Then he moves through and he starts 00:15:42.059 --> 00:15:44.759 talking about people that are eating and drinking 00:15:44.759 --> 00:15:47.960 as they're coming to the church. creating what? 00:15:48.820 --> 00:15:50.779 Sectarianism in the house of God. That's what 00:15:50.779 --> 00:15:54.000 chapter 11 is about. He goes, I hear there are 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:56.940 arguments and divisions and I actually believe 00:15:56.940 --> 00:15:59.379 it. Do you not, and I'm quoting here, do you 00:15:59.379 --> 00:16:02.399 not have houses to eat and drink in? So one comes 00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:05.320 hungry and the other is full. Ones are almost 00:16:05.320 --> 00:16:07.919 getting drunk and others have nothing. What are 00:16:07.919 --> 00:16:09.879 you doing? In essence, he says, what is wrong 00:16:09.879 --> 00:16:13.039 with you? He's still what? In this first letter, 00:16:13.100 --> 00:16:18.399 he's still pulling. Bad behavior out of those 00:16:18.399 --> 00:16:22.840 who he wrote in the first couple of lines. Greetings 00:16:22.840 --> 00:16:26.080 and salutations from God our Father and the Lord 00:16:26.080 --> 00:16:30.899 Jesus Christ to all the saints in Corinth. He 00:16:30.899 --> 00:16:36.019 labels them saints. Not on the basis of their 00:16:36.019 --> 00:16:39.559 works. Not on the basis of how they've proven 00:16:39.559 --> 00:16:41.899 themselves. Because he's going to write that 00:16:41.899 --> 00:16:45.259 they've proved themselves in error. He's going 00:16:45.259 --> 00:16:48.139 to write a lot about their error. I don't know 00:16:48.139 --> 00:16:51.080 about you, but I would not like to have Life 00:16:51.080 --> 00:16:56.080 Bible Church 1 and 2 in the scriptures. Right? 00:16:56.159 --> 00:17:00.940 I'm just saying, open up to the book of LBC. 00:17:01.539 --> 00:17:05.099 Right? And they could read about the first... 00:17:05.440 --> 00:17:08.920 and our beginnings and all of the issues that 00:17:08.920 --> 00:17:11.380 they wrote to that had to be corrected over the 00:17:11.380 --> 00:17:13.940 years. I'm just glad it was the Corinthian church. 00:17:14.019 --> 00:17:16.359 I'm not messing with them too much, but I'm just 00:17:16.359 --> 00:17:19.000 saying the reality is that's what he's doing. 00:17:19.079 --> 00:17:22.039 You're getting a letter to the church leadership 00:17:22.039 --> 00:17:26.279 and to the pastor on how to straighten things 00:17:26.279 --> 00:17:36.599 out. Yes. Straighten it out. Right? Kind of just 00:17:36.599 --> 00:17:39.660 a little chiropractic. Yeah, all right. Now, 00:17:39.779 --> 00:17:46.640 as he's doing that, he gets to 1 Corinthians. 00:17:47.839 --> 00:17:51.500 I preach so much, my iPad went dead. For I received from the 00:17:57.859 --> 00:18:01.180 Lord. This is chapter 11 verse 23.
