I'm going to do my very 00:00:43.310 --> 00:00:46.630 best to kind of bring us into some understanding 00:00:46.630 --> 00:00:51.729 of this passage of John 4. We know that this 00:00:51.729 --> 00:00:56.259 passage is a very famous passage. There is so 00:00:56.259 --> 00:00:59.159 much, as I said last week, there is so much depth 00:00:59.159 --> 00:01:05.319 inside this passage that we often skip over some 00:01:05.319 --> 00:01:08.780 of the things that Jesus was actually uncovering 00:01:08.780 --> 00:01:14.560 and digging at in regard to knowing spirit and 00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:19.159 truth. And so, Father, in Jesus' name this morning, 00:01:19.260 --> 00:01:22.859 Lord, we've come to your altar, we've come to 00:01:22.859 --> 00:01:26.870 your throne. Lord, we're reminded that the priests, 00:01:26.930 --> 00:01:32.730 they came to the altar to offer prayers before 00:01:32.730 --> 00:01:34.790 you. And Lord, that's what we get to do every 00:01:34.790 --> 00:01:37.189 time we come to the house of God. Just a reminder, John chapter 4, verse 00:03:56.300 --> 00:03:59.159 10 and 11. We understand, and let me just give 00:03:59.159 --> 00:04:01.340 a little narration. We understand that Jesus 00:04:01.340 --> 00:04:04.439 was coming into the region of Sychar, the area 00:04:04.439 --> 00:04:07.099 of Samaria. And I'm not going to read the first 00:04:07.099 --> 00:04:09.819 10 verses because if I do, I'll never get to 00:04:09.819 --> 00:04:12.759 where I'm going to go. So I'm just kind of giving 00:04:12.759 --> 00:04:17.170 a summation. And he stands. And as he's been 00:04:17.170 --> 00:04:20.329 journeying by foot, now, remind you, this is 00:04:20.329 --> 00:04:23.189 why it takes us so long to go through some of 00:04:23.189 --> 00:04:26.589 these series, is because Jesus never operated 00:04:26.589 --> 00:04:29.370 in a motorized vehicle. He walked everywhere. 00:04:29.550 --> 00:04:32.149 So that's why it's slow. We're walking our way 00:04:32.149 --> 00:04:35.490 from Passover to Pentecost as we're kind of talking 00:04:35.490 --> 00:04:39.720 through this mindset. Jesus has now walked. into 00:04:39.720 --> 00:04:43.860 Sychar area, into Samaria, and he is sitting 00:04:43.860 --> 00:04:47.620 by or standing by the well that was driven into 00:04:47.620 --> 00:04:50.199 the ground in the area that was given by their 00:04:50.199 --> 00:04:55.310 father Abraham. The reality is he had been walking 00:04:55.310 --> 00:04:58.709 probably since daybreak. That time started there 00:04:58.709 --> 00:05:01.689 in when we deal with time frame there. As you're 00:05:01.689 --> 00:05:03.850 looking at the Bible, their morning started at 00:05:03.850 --> 00:05:07.589 6 a .m. Because that's usually sun up to sun 00:05:07.589 --> 00:05:10.769 down. 6 a .m. to 6 p .m. Everything was within 00:05:10.769 --> 00:05:14.629 usually those 12 hour periods. And so Jesus had 00:05:14.629 --> 00:05:18.220 been walking for six hours. And he was tired. 00:05:18.300 --> 00:05:21.800 The disciples had gone to go get some food. And 00:05:21.800 --> 00:05:25.240 Jesus was by himself at the well. And coming 00:05:25.240 --> 00:05:30.480 out of the well at noontime was a lady that came. 00:05:31.180 --> 00:05:34.060 And you never come to the well. Now, this is 00:05:34.060 --> 00:05:36.160 important. You never come to the well in the 00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:41.970 heat of the day. That wasn't normal. In fact, 00:05:41.970 --> 00:05:45.170 is anybody that lives in Arizona right now, or 00:05:45.170 --> 00:05:47.889 in Palm Springs, or in Palm Desert, or anywhere 00:05:47.889 --> 00:05:52.410 that has the word desert to it, in the summer, 00:05:52.509 --> 00:05:57.970 you don't go out and go, hey, why don't we just 00:05:57.970 --> 00:06:02.000 take a nice walk at two in the afternoon? You 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:05.399 can fry eggs on the sidewalk. You can fry, literally, 00:06:05.480 --> 00:06:08.319 on my solar panel, you could fry an egg. Literally, 00:06:08.379 --> 00:06:11.240 I mean, you just don't do it. People stop working. 00:06:11.399 --> 00:06:14.500 They put wet cloths over them. That would be their time to kind 00:06:40.649 --> 00:06:43.569 of take a break, let it digest, try to get a 00:06:43.569 --> 00:06:45.089 little nap because you're going to go back to 00:06:45.089 --> 00:06:48.329 work after the hotness of the sun sets down. 00:06:48.709 --> 00:06:52.050 Here comes this woman to get water to actually 00:06:52.050 --> 00:06:55.550 work during the day. And Jesus is there. We pick 00:06:55.550 --> 00:07:00.470 this up in verse 10. And Jesus, as he asked her, 00:07:00.529 --> 00:07:05.639 he said, would you give me a drink? And she kind 00:07:05.639 --> 00:07:08.120 of rebuffed that statement and Jesus' response 00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:11.379 to her rebuffing, her rebuffing was this, you, 00:07:11.699 --> 00:07:17.420 being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a 00:07:17.420 --> 00:07:20.860 drink? And Jesus' response in verse 10 is this, 00:07:20.879 --> 00:07:25.180 he says, Jesus answered her, if you knew, could 00:07:25.180 --> 00:07:28.860 you say that with me? If you knew, if you knew 00:07:28.860 --> 00:07:34.879 the gift of God, and who it is saying to you 00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:40.339 give me a drink you would have asked him and 00:07:40.339 --> 00:07:44.939 he would have given you living water now to review 00:07:44.939 --> 00:07:47.579 from last week we said listen jesus was revealing 00:07:47.579 --> 00:07:51.000 himself first and foremost in this passage as 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:54.360 the gift of god he said if you knew the gift 00:07:54.360 --> 00:07:57.449 of god he was saying listen i am the gift of 00:07:57.449 --> 00:07:59.670 God. Now that, if you just say it in today's 00:07:59.670 --> 00:08:01.790 context and don't understand who Jesus was, that 00:08:01.790 --> 00:08:05.269 sounds a little arrogant. I am the gift of God. 00:08:06.449 --> 00:08:09.250 Well, if you're the son of God, yes, you, you 00:08:09.250 --> 00:08:12.509 are. But, but the reality is he was, he was saying 00:08:12.509 --> 00:08:16.009 something that would be said all the way through 00:08:16.009 --> 00:08:21.199 the scriptures for God, the father. In John 3, 00:08:21.259 --> 00:08:25.040 16, just one chapter prior to this, gave his 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:27.839 only begotten son that whosoever would believe 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:29.500 in him would not perish but have everlasting 00:08:29.500 --> 00:08:33.860 life. Jesus had no problem declaring what the 00:08:33.860 --> 00:08:37.379 father's will or what the father's gift was to 00:08:37.379 --> 00:08:42.980 the world. And if you knew who it was, it was 00:08:42.980 --> 00:08:45.500 the gift of God. If you knew the gift of God, 00:08:45.580 --> 00:08:48.940 Jesus saying, I'm that gift. Jesus is declaring 00:08:48.940 --> 00:08:51.720 also the heart of the father. The heart of the 00:08:51.720 --> 00:08:55.779 father is saying what? I am now declaring something 00:08:55.779 --> 00:09:00.340 about God that you have not understood. God's 00:09:00.340 --> 00:09:06.970 nature is a gift giver. Now if there's anything 00:09:06.970 --> 00:09:09.169 that that culture needed, if there's anything 00:09:09.169 --> 00:09:12.529 that the Jewish people needed and the Samaritan 00:09:12.529 --> 00:09:15.090 people needed and every other tribe and nation 00:09:15.090 --> 00:09:18.370 needed is they needed a fresh understanding of 00:09:18.370 --> 00:09:24.409 who God was. Because the narrative of the goodness 00:09:24.409 --> 00:09:29.000 of God had not broke through. The overwhelming 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:33.480 narrative was God is to be feared. God is to 00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:37.419 be respected. And whatever type of God they had, 00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:40.799 it was always on the basis that humanity was 00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:45.139 trying to please God in some way to satisfy him. 00:09:46.360 --> 00:09:49.299 That's the narrative of all the nations of how 00:09:49.299 --> 00:09:53.080 they serve their deities. Jesus comes on the 00:09:53.080 --> 00:09:57.350 scene saying, listen, I've come to breach. Excuse 00:09:57.350 --> 00:10:01.990 me, to bridge the breach that came through sin. 00:10:03.370 --> 00:10:06.669 And I've come to set something in place here 00:10:06.669 --> 00:10:10.070 so that you would understand the real nature 00:10:10.070 --> 00:10:14.389 of the father and that his desire is to give 00:10:14.389 --> 00:10:18.730 of himself. He is at essence a giver of life, 00:10:18.870 --> 00:10:22.350 a giver of love, a giver of grace, a giver of 00:10:22.350 --> 00:10:25.990 mercy, a giver of hope, a giver of all things 00:10:25.990 --> 00:10:30.669 that are good. That is his nature. And that smoked. 00:10:31.480 --> 00:10:35.740 The belts of every person. Because the reality 00:10:35.740 --> 00:10:38.600 is. They couldn't compute that. Because culture. 00:10:39.580 --> 00:10:44.919 Mandates. Religion. Had created a mindset. Of 00:10:44.919 --> 00:10:48.200 how to approach God. And that's why Jesus was. 00:10:48.299 --> 00:10:52.100 Acting so intentional. With this woman saying. 00:10:52.259 --> 00:10:57.759 If you knew. The gift of God. And who it was. 00:10:58.500 --> 00:11:02.379 Saying to you. Give me a drink. You would have 00:11:02.379 --> 00:11:06.259 asked him and he would have given you. Notice 00:11:06.259 --> 00:11:10.799 how Jesus turned it. He was saying, listen, if 00:11:10.799 --> 00:11:16.440 you just give him, you're little. That's all 00:11:16.440 --> 00:11:21.340 God is looking for. You give him what you have. 00:11:22.559 --> 00:11:26.429 Just give him a drink. Give him the act. of what 00:11:26.429 --> 00:11:30.490 he's asking. And you have no idea what's in store 00:11:30.490 --> 00:11:33.649 because he's the giver of life at every area. 00:11:35.389 --> 00:11:37.850 See, Jesus was declaring to this woman, and here's 00:11:37.850 --> 00:11:41.669 where we ended up last week, the gift of God 00:11:41.669 --> 00:11:45.450 wants to be known. Really, that's what Jesus 00:11:45.450 --> 00:11:48.470 was doing with the Samaritan woman. He was declaring 00:11:48.470 --> 00:11:53.539 God's gift is not meant to be in secret. God's 00:11:53.539 --> 00:11:57.320 gift is meant to be known. God's gift is meant 00:11:57.320 --> 00:12:00.399 to be experienced. And Jesus was saying to the 00:12:00.399 --> 00:12:02.960 Samaritan, which would represent all Gentile 00:12:02.960 --> 00:12:05.460 nations, he was saying, listen, he's going to 00:12:05.460 --> 00:12:07.059 say this here a little further. He said, listen, 00:12:07.159 --> 00:12:10.980 salvation is of the Jews. Because she had some 00:12:10.980 --> 00:12:13.960 arguments. She goes, well, you Jews say you worship 00:12:13.960 --> 00:12:16.360 over there at that mountain. We worship at this 00:12:16.360 --> 00:12:19.799 mountain. And Jesus... I had people come to me 00:12:19.799 --> 00:12:23.000 over the years. I've had almost 35 years of, 00:12:23.039 --> 00:12:26.440 36 years of ministry, 33 years of ministry full 00:12:26.440 --> 00:12:29.279 time. 36 years of ministry, I've had people come 00:12:29.279 --> 00:12:32.919 say, you know, Jesus doesn't correct and doesn't 00:12:32.919 --> 00:12:35.620 correct people. He's always so kind and gentle. 00:12:35.700 --> 00:12:38.559 I'm thinking, have you read any of the stories? 00:12:39.700 --> 00:12:43.960 I mean, you know, have you read any of the times 00:12:43.960 --> 00:12:46.539 he talked to the disciples? Oh, you of little 00:12:46.539 --> 00:12:54.009 faith. Why do you not believe? Or the time that 00:12:54.009 --> 00:12:57.509 he would say to his disciples, how long must 00:12:57.509 --> 00:13:01.309 I be with you? These are not statements of great 00:13:01.309 --> 00:13:05.269 endearing. These are statements of exasperated 00:13:05.269 --> 00:13:11.129 parenting. And in this particular instance with 00:13:11.129 --> 00:13:14.929 the Samaritan woman, he basically just said, 00:13:14.990 --> 00:13:19.139 you're wrong. You Jews worship there, we worship 00:13:19.139 --> 00:13:21.580 here, but I know when Messiah comes, this was 00:13:21.580 --> 00:13:24.539 her phrase, I know when Messiah comes, he will 00:13:24.539 --> 00:13:28.559 teach us all things. He goes, I'm he. Salvation 00:13:28.559 --> 00:13:31.740 is of the Jews. Folks, if that isn't a correction, 00:13:31.960 --> 00:13:35.700 I don't know what is. That's not a loving, oh, 00:13:35.799 --> 00:13:37.840 nice try, honey. Here's a participation award. 00:13:40.240 --> 00:13:43.950 He literally comes and re - frames her thinking. 00:13:44.129 --> 00:13:47.350 And you understand what he did was actually show 00:13:47.350 --> 00:13:51.269 us what it takes for repentance. She actually had to let go. If she was going to receive the gift that 00:14:20.139 --> 00:14:22.460 she didn't know, she would have to do what? She'd 00:14:22.460 --> 00:14:27.700 have to take the correction, reframe it, believe 00:14:27.700 --> 00:14:31.019 it, and then allow a new understanding to come 00:14:31.019 --> 00:14:35.539 to her. Do you understand? That's often why people 00:14:35.539 --> 00:14:40.419 don't get the gifts that God actually has for 00:14:40.419 --> 00:14:45.269 them. Because they want to receive a gift without 00:14:45.269 --> 00:14:51.370 actually changing their perspective. Jesus was 00:14:51.370 --> 00:14:54.370 saying, listen, you've not known the nature of 00:14:54.370 --> 00:14:57.429 my father. You've not known his gifts, his goodness. 00:14:58.509 --> 00:15:02.490 Jesus is saying, if you really knew, if you knew 00:15:02.490 --> 00:15:07.269 God's nature and God's heart, then you would 00:15:07.269 --> 00:15:12.320 want everything that he has for you. Jesus continues 00:15:12.320 --> 00:15:15.399 the dialogue with this, if you really knew what 00:15:15.399 --> 00:15:18.100 I bring. And I want us to focus our attention 00:15:18.100 --> 00:15:23.399 on this in what it says in John 10. When it says, 00:15:23.460 --> 00:15:31.179 if you knew the gift, you would have asked. That 00:15:31.179 --> 00:15:37.129 word is eteo. in the Greek. And I want to drill 00:15:37.129 --> 00:15:39.690 down on this this morning. I know sometimes the 00:15:39.690 --> 00:15:42.909 Greek, we don't always understand it, but it's 00:15:42.909 --> 00:15:45.509 important to look at the original language that 00:15:45.509 --> 00:15:48.769 this was written in because the word ateo actually 00:15:48.769 --> 00:15:52.769 means something beyond just this phrase. This 00:15:52.769 --> 00:15:56.990 one word in the Greek actually means you would 00:15:56.990 --> 00:16:02.110 have asked. You would have asked. Four words. 00:16:02.700 --> 00:16:06.299 equaling one word in the Greek. That word ateo 00:16:06.299 --> 00:16:15.240 means this, to crave, to call, to ask, to desire, 00:16:15.539 --> 00:16:22.679 to require, and to beseech of wanting the more. 00:16:24.299 --> 00:16:27.940 Now, that's important because, and I'm gonna 00:16:27.940 --> 00:16:31.980 come down and just try to explain this. If you 00:16:31.980 --> 00:16:36.419 understand what Jesus was saying, if you knew 00:16:36.419 --> 00:16:42.000 who it was that you were talking to, if you understood 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:45.919 the gift of God, if you had a fresh revelation 00:16:45.919 --> 00:16:49.220 and you stepped outside of the banks of your 00:16:49.220 --> 00:16:51.899 thought process, your religion, your culture, 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:55.539 even in the big one for most of us today, you'd 00:16:55.539 --> 00:17:00.029 step outside. Of the issue of what you think 00:17:00.029 --> 00:17:02.929 you've done wrong. And the framework of what 00:17:02.929 --> 00:17:06.309 you've done wrong. And you'd stop allowing those 00:17:06.309 --> 00:17:09.750 voices to keep you from receiving. If you'd just 00:17:09.750 --> 00:17:13.849 allow yourself to step into who he really is. 00:17:14.289 --> 00:17:18.410 You would have had something inside of you. At the heart of when 00:17:45.049 --> 00:17:49.599 Van accepted Jesus Christ, at the very essence 00:17:49.599 --> 00:17:53.720 of who he is, when he surrendered to Jesus Christ, 00:17:53.940 --> 00:17:57.559 several things happened at the same time, the 00:17:57.559 --> 00:18:00.420 Bible tells us. He was, when he repented of his 00:18:00.420 --> 00:18:03.319 sins and he asked Jesus to come and live in his 00:18:03.319 --> 00:18:05.359 life, here's what happened. Number one, he was 00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:07.559 justified. That word is a big word, but it simply 00:18:07.559 --> 00:18:11.319 means he was made right with the laws that he 00:18:11.319 --> 00:18:16.420 was contrary to. That worship becomes 00:38:40.679 --> 00:38:48.500 a ritual rather than life -giving. Well, partly because she'd had 00:39:49.920 --> 00:39:52.360 five different husbands and the one she was with 00:39:52.360 --> 00:39:55.400 now wasn't her own. The ladies in the town weren't 00:39:55.400 --> 00:39:58.699 exactly thrilled to have to play bingo with her. 00:40:02.250 --> 00:40:08.469 She was a threat to every marriage. You have to operate 00:43:49.130 --> 00:43:52.449 in the truth of his word. And you have to operate 00:43:52.449 --> 00:43:55.570 in the fullness of his spirit. Now that doesn't 00:43:55.570 --> 00:43:58.670 mean that you're going to have that. That's the first part of truth. Bringing 00:45:41.949 --> 00:45:46.579 what? I bring myself. The next part of worshiping 00:45:46.579 --> 00:45:50.280 in spirit and truth is that I now minister in 00:45:50.280 --> 00:45:53.900 vulnerability to the Lord with everything that's 00:45:53.900 --> 00:45:59.239 in me and I allow his spirit to awaken me to 00:45:59.239 --> 00:46:03.039 areas where I'm not aligned, awaken me to areas... 00:46:03.389 --> 00:46:06.590 That aren't actually in the truth. You see, that's what Jesus was trying 00:49:52.869 --> 00:49:55.789 to take out of the Samaritan woman. Not only 00:49:55.789 --> 00:49:58.909 was he trying to redo her mindset, That had been 00:49:58.909 --> 00:50:01.829 framed by her mistakes and her behavior. That 00:50:01.829 --> 00:50:05.349 was just one of the issues. He was removing the 00:50:05.349 --> 00:50:08.789 mindset. That the mountain that she was worshiping 00:50:08.789 --> 00:50:12.789 on. Was equal to what God said needed to be pursued. 00:50:14.789 --> 00:50:17.849 And that's what the Lord is doing. In his house 00:50:17.849 --> 00:50:23.090 right now. Is he is cleansing the mixture. Allowing 00:50:23.090 --> 00:50:27.150 people to embrace what? The real word of God. 00:50:27.789 --> 00:50:31.190 Not just what you think. And I'm willing to trade it.
