We've been 00:02:43.060 --> 00:02:45.580 talking about Jesus dealing with the woman at 00:02:45.580 --> 00:02:50.300 the well. We're on our slow. Remember, Jesus 00:02:50.300 --> 00:02:53.840 walked everywhere he went. So there was no motorized 00:02:53.840 --> 00:02:57.360 sermons in the scriptures. So we are walking 00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:00.819 our way slowly through the scriptures from Passover 00:03:00.819 --> 00:03:04.479 to Pentecost and that understanding of as Jesus 00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:07.599 is speaking in his three and a half years of 00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:11.199 ministry as he begins to lay down some of the 00:03:11.199 --> 00:03:16.280 and build foundation stones of truth as he introduces 00:03:17.080 --> 00:03:20.539 the truth of the Father as he is that, but also 00:03:20.539 --> 00:03:23.460 the truth of the Holy Spirit. And it's important 00:03:23.460 --> 00:03:27.879 that as we see this in John 4, that we recognize 00:03:27.879 --> 00:03:31.340 what Jesus was actually saying to the Samaritan 00:03:31.340 --> 00:03:34.599 woman, because it applies to every single one 00:03:34.599 --> 00:03:38.520 of us. John 4 .10 is kind of the key verse that 00:03:38.520 --> 00:03:42.930 we've been kind of... anchored off of last week 00:03:42.930 --> 00:03:45.810 we'll review that and just remind ourselves okay 00:03:45.810 --> 00:03:48.770 what are we talking about here John 4 10 says 00:03:48.770 --> 00:03:52.050 this Jesus answered the woman at the well he 00:03:52.050 --> 00:03:56.629 said if you knew the gift of God and who it was 00:03:56.629 --> 00:04:02.030 that says to you give me a drink you would have 00:04:02.030 --> 00:04:06.590 asked of him and he would have given you living 00:04:06.590 --> 00:04:13.580 water if you knew If you knew who it was that 00:04:13.580 --> 00:04:16.579 was around you, that was in front of you, that 00:04:16.579 --> 00:04:20.199 was constantly asking, I would just say it to 00:04:20.199 --> 00:04:22.720 you personally, for those that are here in this 00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:24.860 room, everyone that was in the sound of my voice, 00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:28.259 those online, if you knew who was speaking to 00:04:28.259 --> 00:04:32.519 you, if you knew, because God is always speaking. 00:04:33.899 --> 00:04:36.680 He's always declaring. In fact, as the scripture 00:04:36.680 --> 00:04:40.079 says in Psalms, day after day, it pours forth 00:04:40.079 --> 00:04:43.620 speech. Night after night, it declares his splendor. 00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:47.939 God is always revealing himself. He's always 00:04:47.939 --> 00:04:50.579 speaking. In fact, as the Bible says, the thoughts 00:04:50.579 --> 00:04:55.779 of God are thousands daily toward you. He's always 00:04:55.779 --> 00:04:58.339 speaking. The problem is we got to do the little 00:04:58.339 --> 00:05:02.410 tune into the frequency. I know for those that 00:05:02.410 --> 00:05:05.069 are under 30, there's a thing called a radio. 00:05:07.449 --> 00:05:11.470 And that radio, if you happen to go to your grandparents 00:05:11.470 --> 00:05:13.069 or maybe your great -grandparents, there was 00:05:13.069 --> 00:05:15.730 a little big box and it had a big old tuner on 00:05:15.730 --> 00:05:18.209 the side and a needle between the stations. And 00:05:18.209 --> 00:05:21.110 you had to, not digitally, this was before the 00:05:21.110 --> 00:05:24.529 age of digital. I know, back to the Stone Age 00:05:24.529 --> 00:05:31.379 of the 60s and 70s. You had to actually, in 30s, 00:05:31.379 --> 00:05:35.079 40s, 50s, you had to tune that radio in to get 00:05:35.079 --> 00:05:41.680 a signal. Folks, God works on digital, of course. 00:05:42.339 --> 00:05:46.579 But the spiritual atmosphere of how you are made 00:05:46.579 --> 00:05:51.920 actually speaks to you dialing in, not just having 00:05:51.920 --> 00:05:57.160 a preset and expecting God to do it all. God 00:05:57.160 --> 00:06:01.980 is always releasing on his word and by his spirit, 00:06:02.040 --> 00:06:06.060 his truth. But he is looking for you and I to 00:06:06.060 --> 00:06:09.240 have personal responsibility. Why? Because things 00:06:09.240 --> 00:06:14.079 in our life move us off the dial. And for those 00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:16.420 of us that are somewhat old timers, let's say 00:06:16.420 --> 00:06:19.720 50 and above, we recognize that you can have 00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:23.199 a radio back in the day set on that perfect place 00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:28.199 and just This atmosphere alone makes you redial 00:06:28.199 --> 00:06:31.720 and retune it in. Just like an instrument of 00:06:31.720 --> 00:06:35.480 guitar. If that guitar was not tuned each time 00:06:35.480 --> 00:06:38.019 we played, you wouldn't want to be in this building. 00:06:39.240 --> 00:06:41.740 Because I don't know about you, but kind of how 00:06:41.740 --> 00:06:45.259 I was raised. We raised in a conservative setting 00:06:45.259 --> 00:06:48.379 in the Mennonite church, and the church I went 00:06:48.379 --> 00:06:50.720 to didn't even have instruments. We all kind 00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:53.660 of just... heard the tune from the pitch pipe 00:06:53.660 --> 00:06:56.779 and four -part harmony man when somebody was 00:06:56.779 --> 00:07:02.040 flat or sharp it was like knuckles across the 00:07:02.040 --> 00:07:06.439 cheese grater for me the little the thing that 00:07:06.439 --> 00:07:09.180 you know nothing worse in my mind literally that's 00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:11.519 why you'll see me from time to time talk to the 00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:14.899 sound booth going they're flat turn them down 00:07:14.899 --> 00:07:18.689 or the guitars off Tell them they need to turn. 00:07:18.730 --> 00:07:21.829 I can hear it when the tune goes out. I don't 00:07:21.829 --> 00:07:24.209 like that about myself, but man, it messes with 00:07:24.209 --> 00:07:30.069 me. It's kind of like. The same thing is true 00:07:30.069 --> 00:07:35.110 just by living this life. You can find yourself, 00:07:35.250 --> 00:07:38.269 even though you're dialed into the right station, 00:07:38.370 --> 00:07:41.550 you can find yourself with a very weak signal 00:07:41.550 --> 00:07:45.660 or even. Almost missing it completely. And it 00:07:45.660 --> 00:07:50.139 takes what? It takes time in his presence to 00:07:50.139 --> 00:07:54.240 tune yourself back in. It's not that God moved. 00:07:54.699 --> 00:07:58.819 It's that we're flawed. Come on, we're flawed. 00:07:59.600 --> 00:08:02.540 And we need to always come back to recentering 00:08:02.540 --> 00:08:05.319 and to the tuning fork of heaven. And so Jesus 00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:07.800 is saying, if you knew, if you understood that 00:08:07.800 --> 00:08:09.980 God was speaking, and here's what was happening 00:08:09.980 --> 00:08:12.439 with this Samaritan woman and what happens with 00:08:12.439 --> 00:08:15.740 us. Many times we get involved in things in life. 00:08:15.860 --> 00:08:19.889 And for certainly for this woman, Jesus. Nothing 00:08:19.889 --> 00:08:24.689 was haphazard. I can't imagine knowing who God 00:08:24.689 --> 00:08:28.670 is and how he framed everything in the scripture. 00:08:28.750 --> 00:08:30.810 Even times where he said, when the disciples 00:08:30.810 --> 00:08:33.730 came to say, God, or the Pharisees, who sinned, 00:08:33.730 --> 00:08:36.789 this man or his parents? He goes, neither. It 00:08:36.789 --> 00:08:39.190 was that the works of God would be done. This 00:08:39.190 --> 00:08:44.250 Samaritan woman was picked on purpose. God always 00:08:44.250 --> 00:08:49.549 directed his son by what? Jesus being completely 00:08:49.549 --> 00:08:52.590 in tune and bringing him to the well at that 00:08:52.590 --> 00:08:55.870 time, at that point, at that day, because that 00:08:55.870 --> 00:08:58.429 was his divine appointment. And it was to remind 00:08:58.429 --> 00:09:01.429 you and I that God sees and knows everything. 00:09:01.610 --> 00:09:04.669 It was also in Jesus dealing with the Samaritan 00:09:04.669 --> 00:09:07.649 woman saying, you can get caught up in so many 00:09:07.649 --> 00:09:11.549 things. a faulty understanding, and a spirit 00:09:11.549 --> 00:09:15.330 of religion that you think you're okay even when 00:09:15.330 --> 00:09:18.830 you can't even see or hear the one who's trying 00:09:18.830 --> 00:09:25.110 to talk to you in the moment. Wow. Jesus was 00:09:25.110 --> 00:09:28.090 revealing himself to this woman and to all of 00:09:28.090 --> 00:09:31.840 us as what? The gift of God. And Jesus, by doing, 00:09:31.860 --> 00:09:34.360 saying, if you really knew who it was, that the 00:09:34.360 --> 00:09:37.480 gift of God, the gift that God, because he was 00:09:37.480 --> 00:09:40.120 quoting John. Remember, we're in the gospel of 00:09:40.120 --> 00:09:43.919 John. This is key language. For God so loved 00:09:43.919 --> 00:09:47.639 the world that he gave his only son. Jesus is 00:09:47.639 --> 00:09:53.000 the gift to bring reconciliation, to close the 00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:57.820 gap between the father and the world. If you 00:09:57.820 --> 00:10:01.440 knew the gift of God, he was saying it not only 00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:04.960 as salvation, but he was saying it as relational. 00:10:06.980 --> 00:10:10.000 Second thing Jesus was, or third thing Jesus 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:12.379 was doing is he was revealing that the father 00:10:12.379 --> 00:10:16.960 in his nature is a gift giver. And we looked 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:22.559 at that last week. God himself loves giving himself. 00:10:23.909 --> 00:10:26.870 If you're a gift giver, you understand this. 00:10:26.929 --> 00:10:30.370 You are giving part of yourself in that gift. 00:10:31.389 --> 00:10:34.610 And the father, Jesus was explaining, if you 00:10:34.610 --> 00:10:39.070 knew the gift of God and who it was that was 00:10:39.070 --> 00:10:41.690 saying to you, give me a drink, you would have 00:10:41.690 --> 00:10:44.929 asked him and he would have given you living 00:10:44.929 --> 00:10:47.629 water. That's really kind of perplexing that 00:10:47.629 --> 00:10:49.929 Jesus would put it that way. But he was saying, 00:10:50.029 --> 00:10:53.529 listen, I'm asking you something. Because what 00:10:53.529 --> 00:10:58.190 you're giving me is small compared to the gift 00:10:58.190 --> 00:11:01.889 that God wants to actually give you. I'm trying 00:11:01.889 --> 00:11:04.950 to get you. Notice he was trying to get the woman 00:11:04.950 --> 00:11:12.789 to cross over her reservations to receive a gift 00:11:12.789 --> 00:11:16.950 that was beyond her wildest imaginations. So 00:11:16.950 --> 00:11:22.090 many times. We limit the gift of God and we limit 00:11:22.090 --> 00:11:26.009 God as the gift giver because we have mindsets 00:11:26.009 --> 00:11:29.570 that stop us from actually crossing over and 00:11:29.570 --> 00:11:31.490 receiving. I don't mean that in a weird way. 00:11:31.570 --> 00:11:35.350 I mean actually receiving God's perspective, 00:11:35.629 --> 00:11:41.809 his love, and the gifts that he has for us. This 00:11:41.809 --> 00:11:43.529 leads us to the next point. We can put it on 00:11:43.529 --> 00:11:47.090 the screen. The gift of God wants to be known. 00:11:47.980 --> 00:11:54.279 Not only is God a gift giver, if we have to begin 00:11:54.279 --> 00:11:57.840 to put in our mind that is who God the Father 00:11:57.840 --> 00:12:03.059 is. He is a gift giver. Now people have taken 00:12:03.059 --> 00:12:06.980 this and moved it to an extreme. They've moved 00:12:06.980 --> 00:12:10.480 it to an extreme, let's just say prosperity type 00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:15.340 gospel. It does not remove the fact that God 00:12:15.340 --> 00:12:18.929 does not He does desire to prosper you, but that 00:12:18.929 --> 00:12:23.350 is not the only thing that God wants to do. And 00:12:23.350 --> 00:12:25.870 when we boil it down to just material things 00:12:25.870 --> 00:12:29.990 or prosperity of wealth, that is the smallest 00:12:29.990 --> 00:12:36.330 issue in what he comes to bring. This is where 00:12:36.330 --> 00:12:39.370 it has to come back under the balance of the 00:12:39.370 --> 00:12:42.789 whole scripture. Just like when we give to the 00:12:42.789 --> 00:12:45.070 Lord of our tithes and offerings. Tithes and 00:12:45.070 --> 00:12:50.470 offerings of obedience and of faith is the smallest 00:12:50.470 --> 00:12:54.809 of all the things that he asks of us. The greater 00:12:54.809 --> 00:12:59.149 gifts are all the other gifts above that. Yet 00:12:59.149 --> 00:13:03.440 it's still included. Same with prosperity. I 00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:05.960 didn't mean to even get on this topic, but because 00:13:05.960 --> 00:13:10.419 it's so much in the news stream that the perversion 00:13:10.419 --> 00:13:13.600 of it is that's all people talk about. That shouldn't 00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:15.820 be all people talk about, but it includes who 00:13:15.820 --> 00:13:19.259 God is. And so there has to be an understanding 00:13:19.259 --> 00:13:24.399 that God brings his gift to every level of your 00:13:24.399 --> 00:13:28.610 life. Every level. Now, let's move on. Jesus 00:13:28.610 --> 00:13:33.250 is saying to the woman and to every person, especially 00:13:33.250 --> 00:13:38.789 of the Gentiles as he was in the realm of Samaria. 00:13:39.070 --> 00:13:42.110 And Samaria, again, for those that are listening 00:13:42.110 --> 00:13:47.429 here, Samaria was a mixed, what used to be where 00:13:47.429 --> 00:13:52.330 God's people, he had two... 12 tribes, two stayed 00:13:52.330 --> 00:13:55.830 in the land of Judah, 10 got dispersed and Samaria 00:13:55.830 --> 00:14:01.750 became known as a place of mixture. So just even 00:14:01.750 --> 00:14:05.570 Jesus dealing at this well, it is a picture of 00:14:05.570 --> 00:14:09.570 God doesn't forget. Oh my goodness, I gotta come 00:14:09.570 --> 00:14:13.009 down here and preach this. God does not forget 00:14:13.009 --> 00:14:20.809 places where he put truth in your life. He was 00:14:20.809 --> 00:14:26.470 standing by the well of the forefathers. That 00:14:26.470 --> 00:14:29.070 was prophetic even in itself. It was a type and 00:14:29.070 --> 00:14:33.570 shadow. God came to do what? Still bring up the 00:14:33.570 --> 00:14:37.289 water of truth that was once dug for to actually 00:14:37.289 --> 00:14:40.789 provide for his people long ago. And even when 00:14:40.789 --> 00:14:43.950 you stray, God still comes to bring you back 00:14:43.950 --> 00:14:47.129 to places where truth doesn't change. You moved. 00:14:48.750 --> 00:14:53.250 Here Jesus is sitting at this well. Of course 00:14:53.250 --> 00:14:57.730 he could have commanded, cup, be formed, water, 00:14:57.889 --> 00:15:01.909 come in it. But he didn't. Why? Because it was 00:15:01.909 --> 00:15:05.429 a prophetic statement of saying God always uses 00:15:05.429 --> 00:15:10.169 and partners with people to bring about God's 00:15:10.169 --> 00:15:13.870 revelation and encounter. He doesn't just do 00:15:13.870 --> 00:15:18.080 things by himself. He can. He could do it all 00:15:18.080 --> 00:15:21.759 by himself. But he's chosen from the very place 00:15:21.759 --> 00:15:26.440 of pattern to always include us in the understanding 00:15:26.440 --> 00:15:31.120 of God, in the revealing of God, and in the releasing 00:15:31.120 --> 00:15:34.519 of who God is. That's why he's called the gift 00:15:34.519 --> 00:15:38.620 giver. He's constantly giving and wanting that 00:15:38.620 --> 00:15:43.139 gift to get in you and through you. Because that's 00:15:43.139 --> 00:15:47.669 his nature. He's saying to the woman, My people 00:15:47.669 --> 00:15:51.129 know that God gives gifts. Listen, she gave the 00:15:51.129 --> 00:15:53.570 excuse. You people worship here, we worship there. 00:15:53.669 --> 00:15:57.929 Jesus had to correct some things. Sometimes I 00:15:57.929 --> 00:16:02.049 listen to people and I read all sorts of things 00:16:02.049 --> 00:16:04.909 and watch all sorts of things as time allows 00:16:04.909 --> 00:16:07.850 me of various different commentaries of how people 00:16:07.850 --> 00:16:11.149 view things. And people always want to say that 00:16:11.149 --> 00:16:13.970 Jesus didn't correct things. I'm like, have you 00:16:13.970 --> 00:16:18.940 read the scriptures? Okay, let's just read it. 00:16:18.980 --> 00:16:23.740 This is a correction. Salvation is of the Jews. 00:16:23.980 --> 00:16:27.559 He didn't say, you are wrong. He was saying, 00:16:27.700 --> 00:16:35.940 you are wrong. Your answer? Now, he didn't get 00:16:35.940 --> 00:16:39.960 nasty about it, but he literally said the truth. 00:16:40.740 --> 00:16:45.000 Salvation is of the Jews. Everything that you 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:54.870 thought. It's not. Change. You've had your perspective. 00:16:55.409 --> 00:16:58.690 You've lived in it. You've thought it. You've 00:16:58.690 --> 00:17:01.070 rehearsed it with those that were around you. 00:17:01.610 --> 00:17:03.929 But your encounter with God is gonna require 00:17:03.929 --> 00:17:08.150 you to come to a different conclusion. Folks, 00:17:08.230 --> 00:17:12.509 in that statement alone, Jesus was releasing 00:17:12.509 --> 00:17:16.890 what repentance really is. It's the changing, 00:17:17.769 --> 00:17:20.670 of the position of your heart and your mind to 00:17:20.670 --> 00:17:25.549 agree with what God says. And Jesus was saying, 00:17:25.589 --> 00:17:29.170 but you have not known. Listen, my people know 00:17:29.170 --> 00:17:31.910 God gives gifts. You have not known the gifts, 00:17:31.930 --> 00:17:35.450 nor have you known the nature of God's gifts 00:17:35.450 --> 00:17:37.910 or his goodness, because you've not known the 00:17:37.910 --> 00:17:39.990 true and living God. That's what he was really 00:17:39.990 --> 00:17:43.509 saying to the Samaritan woman. If you knew. But 00:17:43.509 --> 00:17:46.170 because of where you've come from, because of 00:17:46.170 --> 00:17:48.150 the mindset of what you've surrounded yourself 00:17:48.150 --> 00:17:52.250 with, and because you've embraced not only a 00:17:52.250 --> 00:17:55.029 political persuasion, but a religious persuasion, 00:17:55.109 --> 00:17:58.490 you've separated yourself from us on the basis 00:17:58.490 --> 00:18:01.190 of, yes, there was injustice from this group. 00:18:01.230 --> 00:18:04.069 There was religious pride from this group. Yes, 00:18:04.069 --> 00:18:06.509 there was all sorts of things that made you feel 00:18:06.509 --> 00:18:13.140 inferior. But that does not negate where you 00:18:13.140 --> 00:18:15.500 have to get to actually come to the source of 00:18:15.500 --> 00:18:19.279 truth. You can't bring truth to validate where 00:18:19.279 --> 00:18:22.720 you live. You still have to come and embrace 00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:25.900 truth and come from where you live to where he 00:18:25.900 --> 00:18:31.220 is at. It's a big deal. What do I mean by that? 00:18:31.259 --> 00:18:36.500 Jesus is saying, if you really knew. If you knew 00:18:36.500 --> 00:18:39.539 God's nature in his heart, you would then want 00:18:39.539 --> 00:18:43.380 what he has. And Jesus continuing in this dialogue 00:18:43.380 --> 00:18:50.119 in John 10 and 11 says, if you knew, you would 00:18:50.119 --> 00:18:55.660 have asked. Why? And yet the truth that 00:48:59.190 --> 00:49:01.889 was operating in both was standing right in front 00:49:01.889 --> 00:49:05.530 of them and neither group was able to identify. 00:49:05.769 --> 00:49:08.849 Why? Because it didn't come the way they thought 00:49:08.849 --> 00:49:15.909 truth should look. And that's why Jesus had to 00:49:15.909 --> 00:49:19.570 break through to this. John 1, as 00:50:40.269 --> 00:50:42.670 the Apostle John writes the beginning of his... 00:50:43.680 --> 00:50:46.980 salutations and his opening argument of his gospel. 00:50:47.800 --> 00:50:52.440 He goes, and we beheld him. John chapter one, 00:50:52.519 --> 00:50:57.139 verse 14, and we saw him. The word of God made 00:50:57.139 --> 00:51:01.000 flesh and we beheld his glory. Notice the next 00:51:01.000 --> 00:51:03.460 statement that he would say that would be the 00:51:03.460 --> 00:51:07.659 beginning salvo that would go all the way through 00:51:07.659 --> 00:51:13.699 the gospel of John is he was full. of grace and 00:51:13.699 --> 00:51:18.980 truth. What's he saying? Full of the Spirit and 00:51:18.980 --> 00:51:26.820 full of accuracy from God's perspective. Full. 00:51:27.940 --> 00:51:31.460 There wasn't an either or. He never sided to 00:51:31.460 --> 00:51:34.440 one or not. He accepted both the fullness of 00:51:34.440 --> 00:51:36.019 the Holy Spirit. That's why the Bible would say 00:51:36.019 --> 00:51:39.800 in another place, the Spirit was on him without 00:51:39.800 --> 00:51:43.599 measure. It means the spirit of grace, the spirit 00:51:43.599 --> 00:51:46.420 of counsel, the spirit of power, the spirit of 00:51:46.420 --> 00:51:50.960 might, the anointing, the revelation, every prophetic 00:51:50.960 --> 00:51:53.739 word of knowledge, gifting, everything that comes 00:51:53.739 --> 00:51:56.360 from the Holy Spirit was on him in fullness. 00:51:56.380 --> 00:52:00.900 Yet what? Jesus never used that to divorce himself 00:52:00.900 --> 00:52:04.719 from the truth. It was always the spirit and 00:52:04.719 --> 00:52:08.400 truth. And that's what made him the fullness 00:52:08.400 --> 00:52:15.159 of truth. That's what he's asking from us. It's 00:52:15.159 --> 00:52:17.079 not that you have to come up with the truth or 00:52:17.079 --> 00:52:20.380 come up with the spirit. We have no part in that. 00:52:20.440 --> 00:52:25.519 Our job is to what? Know him.
