We're going 00:00:47.799 --> 00:00:50.020 to look at other scriptures along the way. But 00:00:50.020 --> 00:00:55.439 I kind of felt pressed this weekend as I was 00:00:55.439 --> 00:01:00.079 not of what to do, but I was planning on coming 00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:03.990 back. this weekend and actually picking up where 00:01:03.990 --> 00:01:06.590 Pastor Trent left the church last week. And the 00:01:06.590 --> 00:01:10.450 reason it's so important to me is because I happened 00:01:10.450 --> 00:01:12.769 to work with Pastor Trent on that message even 00:01:12.769 --> 00:01:15.670 though I was away. I was very involved in the 00:01:15.670 --> 00:01:21.030 theme and kind of directing some of where I believe 00:01:21.030 --> 00:01:23.409 the Holy Spirit was speaking to me on Pentecost. 00:01:24.170 --> 00:01:31.859 And as I sat down to just Fill my mind with prayer 00:01:31.859 --> 00:01:34.159 and then the mind of Christ. And I've been reading 00:01:40.319 --> 00:01:42.939 and just saturating myself. But I feel like the 00:01:42.939 --> 00:01:45.439 Lord is just shifting gears. And I said, I'm 00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:50.060 a little bit at twix because I had planned on 00:01:50.060 --> 00:01:53.299 preaching an expansion of Pentecost. And I really 00:01:53.299 --> 00:01:55.359 felt like the Lord. I came back in Friday. I 00:01:55.359 --> 00:01:58.209 came back in yesterday. I really felt like the 00:01:58.209 --> 00:02:00.390 Lord spoke to me this morning for Life Bible 00:02:00.390 --> 00:02:04.069 Church. He said, I want you to expand on Passover 00:02:04.069 --> 00:02:07.730 so that they can really understand Pentecost. 00:02:07.810 --> 00:02:11.389 So this morning, I'm going to probably teach 00:02:11.389 --> 00:02:14.830 on a dimension of Passover that maybe you haven't 00:02:14.830 --> 00:02:18.069 connected in New Testament understanding. But 00:02:18.069 --> 00:02:22.469 I'm hoping that by the grace of God, that we're 00:02:22.469 --> 00:02:25.569 all going to be deepened and widened with appreciation. 00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:30.039 Of what God did in the Exodus. But we're gonna start in 1 Corinthians. 00:04:14.889 --> 00:04:18.670 First book of Corinthians chapter five. Now this 00:04:18.670 --> 00:04:26.509 is, this is quite a unique approach to talking 00:04:26.509 --> 00:04:29.810 about Passover. Because if you understand anything 00:04:29.810 --> 00:04:33.209 about the book of first Corinthians, now you 00:04:33.209 --> 00:04:35.329 guys are scattered all over the place. All right. 00:04:35.389 --> 00:04:40.550 So if you understand anything about the first 00:04:40.550 --> 00:04:44.850 and second book of Corinthians, You will understand 00:04:44.850 --> 00:04:47.009 this because I know we've got some new believers 00:04:47.009 --> 00:04:49.610 in the room. And so this is, I'm probably gonna 00:04:49.610 --> 00:04:53.050 do more teaching -esque style today than I am 00:04:53.050 --> 00:04:54.709 gonna be preached, but there'll be some of that 00:04:54.709 --> 00:04:57.189 as well. All right, so the reality 00:05:00.230 --> 00:05:05.129 is, if you understand Corinthians, Paul was writing 00:05:05.129 --> 00:05:09.350 to a church that he himself pioneered, okay? 00:05:09.910 --> 00:05:14.349 Now, you have to remember that Paul himself was 00:05:14.349 --> 00:05:19.410 a ardent Jewish person. Before his salvation, 00:05:19.670 --> 00:05:22.430 he was not only born of the tribe, he gives a 00:05:22.430 --> 00:05:25.230 litany actually in the scriptures. He was born 00:05:25.230 --> 00:05:29.290 of the tribe of Benjamin. He was a Pharisee of 00:05:29.290 --> 00:05:32.029 Pharisees. He belonged to the sect of the Pharisees. 00:05:32.410 --> 00:05:36.329 that had the stricter adherence to the law. And 00:05:36.329 --> 00:05:38.810 when he says a Pharisee of Pharisees, which means 00:05:38.810 --> 00:05:41.850 there was a strict adherence to the law, and 00:05:41.850 --> 00:05:45.529 then there was a elite group of people that in 00:05:45.529 --> 00:05:49.269 doctrinal pursuits of the law and understanding 00:05:49.269 --> 00:05:54.189 the minutia of who God is and how to serve and 00:05:54.189 --> 00:05:57.350 worship God, he was of the intellectual elite 00:05:57.350 --> 00:06:01.589 and he was of the observance elite. And God turned. 00:06:01.709 --> 00:06:04.990 someone that was a if you want to call him we 00:06:04.990 --> 00:06:07.629 would call it today he would have a double phd 00:06:07.629 --> 00:06:10.870 in the things of old testament understanding 00:06:10.870 --> 00:06:16.800 god turned that phd double phd mind that was 00:06:16.800 --> 00:06:20.420 against everything that Jesus was. He believed 00:06:20.420 --> 00:06:24.060 Jesus was an imposter. Saul did before his conversion. 00:06:24.220 --> 00:06:28.740 He believed that the gospel that was called the 00:06:28.740 --> 00:06:31.459 way at that time, that was before Christianity. 00:06:31.779 --> 00:06:34.899 He believed that that was a complete farce and 00:06:34.899 --> 00:06:37.779 a complete form of deception and that he was 00:06:37.779 --> 00:06:43.660 willing to give his life to eradicate the way 00:06:43.660 --> 00:06:47.560 and any Christian that was trying to taint in 00:06:47.560 --> 00:06:52.000 his mind what the true minutia and everything 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:55.220 that he had studied, he believed they were a 00:06:55.220 --> 00:06:59.240 detriment to it. And how gracious of God to take 00:06:59.240 --> 00:07:03.459 Saul, who was one of the elite that was part 00:07:03.459 --> 00:07:08.500 of the national, if you will, blood. born, bought 00:07:08.500 --> 00:07:12.480 sons of Israel that had become so exclusive, 00:07:12.680 --> 00:07:16.740 God turned him and brought him back to an understanding 00:07:16.740 --> 00:07:20.500 of who Jesus is as the Messiah and would use 00:07:20.500 --> 00:07:25.139 an intellectual champion on Judaism to defend 00:07:25.139 --> 00:07:30.470 the gospel. Now listen, to every nation. So rather 00:07:30.470 --> 00:07:34.610 than moving to the exclusivity of the minutia 00:07:34.610 --> 00:07:38.410 of the minutia of Judaism, God would take that 00:07:38.410 --> 00:07:42.290 exclusive member that had in his own mind worked 00:07:42.290 --> 00:07:45.810 and proved himself of Judaism and he would make 00:07:45.810 --> 00:07:49.110 a wholesale change through salvation and then 00:07:49.110 --> 00:07:52.670 make him the apostle to the nations. Now that 00:07:52.670 --> 00:07:57.310 in itself is incredible. That you would take 00:07:57.310 --> 00:08:00.709 a scholar of scholars that spent his whole life 00:08:00.709 --> 00:08:05.769 researching texts, reading. Now, listen, we often 00:08:05.769 --> 00:08:08.410 think, I just got to stop here because I got 00:08:08.410 --> 00:08:11.129 to kind of just download on us, Eric, just a 00:08:11.129 --> 00:08:14.889 little bit. We often think, Daniel, that all 00:08:14.889 --> 00:08:18.009 these guys did was read the Bible. Well, they 00:08:18.009 --> 00:08:21.389 read it a lot. The Bible for them was the 39 00:08:21.389 --> 00:08:23.250 books of the Old Testament. They didn't have 00:08:23.250 --> 00:08:26.629 any New Testament writing. So everything they 00:08:26.629 --> 00:08:30.569 got was from the 39 books from Genesis to Malachi. 00:08:30.649 --> 00:08:32.809 But what you don't understand and what we're 00:08:32.809 --> 00:08:36.730 very ignorant in this in the Western culture 00:08:36.730 --> 00:08:40.049 is they were very well studied of everything 00:08:40.049 --> 00:08:44.820 else. So if I was to go and I was to peel back, 00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:47.320 and Nathan, I'll use you as an example. If I 00:08:47.320 --> 00:08:52.419 was to peel back just the head of a Jewish scholar 00:08:52.419 --> 00:08:55.960 in second temple understanding, meaning this, 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:59.500 second temple means the time from Malachi to 00:08:59.500 --> 00:09:03.080 the time of Jesus's birth or the disciples' birth. 00:09:03.240 --> 00:09:06.519 If I was to understand what was their base level 00:09:06.519 --> 00:09:08.679 of reasoning, I could just crack open their skull 00:09:08.679 --> 00:09:13.940 and say, what did you read? only read Torah or 00:09:13.940 --> 00:09:17.559 scriptures or scrolls, the answer would be, are 00:09:17.559 --> 00:09:21.620 you ready for this? No. That and all they read. 00:09:23.080 --> 00:09:29.309 Can't be. Fact is, it is proven history -wise. 00:09:29.389 --> 00:09:32.909 If you look at the scholars, especially one of 00:09:32.909 --> 00:09:35.450 the historians, Flavius Josephus, and there were 00:09:35.450 --> 00:09:39.970 others, Roman historian, Phileo, I think that 00:09:39.970 --> 00:09:44.710 was his name. They would write of history and 00:09:44.710 --> 00:09:48.570 what was quoted, but Josephus specifically would 00:09:48.570 --> 00:09:55.940 lay out what would have been the... the halls 00:09:55.940 --> 00:10:02.440 of saved scrolls and books and Alexandria in 00:10:02.440 --> 00:10:06.480 our Old Testament times would have been the known 00:10:06.480 --> 00:10:11.059 place of all documents of the world that would 00:10:11.059 --> 00:10:13.019 have been preserved, would have been like the 00:10:13.019 --> 00:10:17.440 library or the Smithsonian of today, where everything 00:10:17.440 --> 00:10:21.340 on scrolls would have been saved from every culture. 00:10:21.840 --> 00:10:26.179 The fact is when Daniel went to Babylon, and 00:10:26.179 --> 00:10:28.460 I'm getting way deep here. This is what happens 00:10:28.460 --> 00:10:31.379 after second service. You give first service 00:10:31.379 --> 00:10:33.899 and then all of a sudden I just think about all 00:10:33.899 --> 00:10:35.759 these things and I get downloaded and I'm trying 00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:39.159 to be good. I'm trying to be good, Chelsea. And 00:10:39.159 --> 00:10:44.539 so in this reality, Daniel taken from Judaism 00:10:44.539 --> 00:10:48.100 to, now I skipped from Paul here. We're going 00:10:48.100 --> 00:10:52.059 back to Daniel. Notice what it says. That when 00:10:52.059 --> 00:10:55.019 Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego got 00:10:55.019 --> 00:10:59.860 taken captive, they were educated in what? All 00:10:59.860 --> 00:11:03.980 of the things of the known world at that time. 00:11:04.039 --> 00:11:06.860 That meant every form of science, every form 00:11:06.860 --> 00:11:10.100 of astronomy, astrology. That means every form 00:11:10.100 --> 00:11:13.059 of art that was done even from the Egyptians. 00:11:13.279 --> 00:11:17.919 Everything that was involved in every form of... 00:11:18.159 --> 00:11:23.360 they would have studied to have a view of a world 00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:27.159 perspective and even of foreign deities and how 00:11:27.159 --> 00:11:30.539 to work witchcraft and magic and occult power 00:11:30.539 --> 00:11:34.679 what Daniel had to study. You cannot read the 00:11:34.679 --> 00:11:37.139 book of Daniel and not come with that understanding. 00:11:38.360 --> 00:11:42.779 Because in him, remember the statements, in you. 00:11:43.470 --> 00:11:45.889 is the wisdom of the most high God. There's no 00:11:45.889 --> 00:11:48.029 one like you. Why? They were getting their other 00:11:48.029 --> 00:11:50.070 wisdom from other deities that weren't gods. 00:11:51.190 --> 00:11:55.070 So when you talk about Paul and you talk about 00:11:55.070 --> 00:11:58.350 his understanding and you begin to dive into 00:11:58.350 --> 00:12:01.350 his life, you need to understand that he would 00:12:01.350 --> 00:12:05.629 have had depth. and breadth of many cultures 00:12:05.629 --> 00:12:09.190 and much understanding fact is when you read 00:12:09.190 --> 00:12:11.889 him from that perspective and he writes the book 00:12:11.889 --> 00:12:15.149 of Ephesians he's going to write about principalities 00:12:15.149 --> 00:12:17.990 powers rulers and authorities he doesn't take 00:12:17.990 --> 00:12:21.070 that language from anywhere else other than a 00:12:21.070 --> 00:12:24.070 type of Daniel and a type of understanding of 00:12:24.070 --> 00:12:26.610 second temple understanding that they understood 00:12:26.610 --> 00:12:29.509 that there were other deities that were if you 00:12:29.509 --> 00:12:32.230 will lesser gods that had rule over nations how 00:12:32.230 --> 00:12:35.379 do I get that? Daniel said what? The angel told 00:12:35.379 --> 00:12:38.539 him, when I leave you, I was resisted for 21 00:12:38.539 --> 00:12:42.240 days. The prince of Persia resisted me. But when 00:12:42.240 --> 00:12:45.080 I go back, I'll have to wrestle the prince of 00:12:45.080 --> 00:12:48.379 Greece. Paul talking about prince of powers, 00:12:48.559 --> 00:12:51.059 rules, and authorities was picking up on that 00:12:51.059 --> 00:12:54.340 understanding. Now, why am I saying that? Because 00:12:54.340 --> 00:12:59.379 Paul would have had an understanding of everything. 00:12:59.419 --> 00:13:02.700 Everything that was going on in a Gentile mindset, 00:13:02.980 --> 00:13:06.940 even though he was raised in the strictness of 00:13:06.940 --> 00:13:10.620 Judaism and was educated, remember he quoted 00:13:10.620 --> 00:13:14.600 poets. When he sent them to Crete, what did he 00:13:14.600 --> 00:13:19.399 quote? He told Titus. Put elders at every church 00:13:19.399 --> 00:13:21.960 and remind them. One of their own prophets said 00:13:21.960 --> 00:13:25.440 this. Cretans are evil beasts and lazy gluttons. 00:13:25.500 --> 00:13:28.240 And their own have said this. Paul was quoting 00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:31.639 secular literature that got in the Bible. Hello 00:13:31.639 --> 00:13:38.879 somebody. Peter was quoting. Enoch, the book 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:42.299 of 1 Enoch that's not in the Bible, when he quotes 00:13:42.299 --> 00:13:45.919 about the last days, Jude does the same thing. 00:13:45.940 --> 00:13:49.860 He quotes 1 Enoch. They quote the book of Jasser. 00:13:50.019 --> 00:13:54.440 There were other literature that surrounded their 00:13:54.440 --> 00:13:58.200 culture that they would have drawn from that 00:13:58.200 --> 00:14:01.720 the Holy Spirit picked up and used in the scriptures. 00:14:02.830 --> 00:14:06.690 It doesn't mean it canonizes Jasser or canonizes 00:14:06.690 --> 00:14:10.110 1 Enoch or canonizes the Book of the Watchers 00:14:10.110 --> 00:14:15.149 or canonizes the Cretan poets. But it means that 00:14:15.149 --> 00:14:19.169 their understanding of literature, of history. 00:14:20.279 --> 00:14:22.960 had an understanding and a framework that when 00:14:22.960 --> 00:14:25.659 God breathed on them and used their particular 00:14:25.659 --> 00:14:29.679 personality that God would breathe and write 00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:32.899 the scriptures in, they had the breadth to pull 00:14:32.899 --> 00:14:36.200 things in into the cultures that they would be 00:14:36.200 --> 00:14:40.840 speaking to. Are you there? So it's important 00:14:40.840 --> 00:14:44.720 that when the apostle Paul starts writing in 00:14:44.720 --> 00:14:48.730 Corinthians, He has a very vested interest in 00:14:48.730 --> 00:14:53.169 the fact that he pioneered that church. Through 00:14:53.169 --> 00:14:55.389 the Holy Spirit, of course, we can't do anything 00:14:55.389 --> 00:14:59.789 on our own, but God sent Paul to pioneer the 00:14:59.789 --> 00:15:03.590 Corinthian church. He spent 18 months in Corinth 00:15:03.590 --> 00:15:07.210 pioneering that church. So he's writing this 00:15:07.210 --> 00:15:10.529 letter and Corinthians, without going too deep 00:15:10.529 --> 00:15:13.649 into it, Corinthians was different than most 00:15:13.649 --> 00:15:18.049 other cities. that Paul would go to in all of 00:15:18.049 --> 00:15:21.289 his three missionary journeys. Fact is, the very 00:15:21.289 --> 00:15:25.649 nature of the Corinthian city itself was built 00:15:25.649 --> 00:15:29.110 on rebellion and debauchery different than other 00:15:29.110 --> 00:15:32.710 Roman cities. Corinthian was the one seaport 00:15:32.710 --> 00:15:35.330 that they didn't have a city there that was actually 00:15:35.330 --> 00:15:40.429 started by sailors and those that were kind of 00:15:40.429 --> 00:15:45.269 the rude and outcast of society. Now just think 00:15:45.269 --> 00:15:47.690 of this. How many have ever gone to a coastal 00:15:47.690 --> 00:15:53.350 port? You ever been to Newport or Depot Bay or 00:15:53.350 --> 00:15:57.269 Lincoln City? Anybody ever just... Okay, three 00:15:57.269 --> 00:15:59.549 of you, wonderful. Do you live in the state of 00:15:59.549 --> 00:16:01.970 Oregon? Okay, if you've been to a port city, 00:16:02.009 --> 00:16:04.889 how about Yahats? Because your spirit is witnessing that 00:16:29.159 --> 00:16:34.539 port cities often carry with it a form of evil 00:16:34.539 --> 00:16:40.000 based on a lifestyle of debauchery. What do you 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:44.240 find in most port cities? Why do American servicemen 00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:48.480 and women, what are port cities known for for 00:16:48.480 --> 00:16:52.480 sailors? A place to gamble, to drink, and have 00:16:52.480 --> 00:16:56.700 sex. All right, let me just come down here and 00:16:56.700 --> 00:17:00.120 make sure you're getting this. So Paul 00:25:54.140 --> 00:25:57.119 is making several announcements here. He's saying, 00:25:57.200 --> 00:26:03.420 number one, Jesus Christ has fulfilled every 00:26:03.420 --> 00:26:07.200 part of Passover. He has become the Passover 00:26:07.200 --> 00:26:14.539 lamb. He is the meat, His blood, every part of 00:26:14.539 --> 00:26:19.420 Passover is now fulfilled and has been sacrificed 00:26:19.420 --> 00:26:23.319 and it's been summed up in Jesus Christ. Why 00:26:23.319 --> 00:26:27.430 does a Gentile church need to know that? as Paul 00:26:27.430 --> 00:26:29.710 would write to other churches, there would be 00:26:29.710 --> 00:26:33.049 other people that were more connected to Judaism 00:26:33.049 --> 00:26:37.049 and they would try to draw people back to doing 00:26:37.049 --> 00:26:41.109 things in a natural setting when Christ had already 00:26:41.109 --> 00:26:44.109 fulfilled the natural and what we were to glean 00:26:44.109 --> 00:26:47.170 from it is to be spiritual. So he was setting 00:26:47.170 --> 00:26:50.269 the tone right off the bat. Jesus 01:00:10.769 --> 01:00:15.210 fulfilled the Passover. So the principle of eating 01:00:15.210 --> 01:00:18.070 unleavened bread is not about what I'm getting 01:00:18.070 --> 01:00:21.309 ready to eat now. It's am I eating? Remember 01:00:21.309 --> 01:00:24.130 what he said in that verse? Am I eating from 01:00:24.130 --> 01:00:31.769 sincerity and truth? Or am I eating still having 01:00:31.769 --> 01:00:36.230 malice and wickedness in my heart?
