It 00:02:02.859 --> 00:02:06.299 is beyond comprehension. In my lifetime, I've 00:02:06.299 --> 00:02:09.159 never seen anything like it. And many of our 00:02:09.159 --> 00:02:11.860 churches over there, their buildings are totally 00:02:11.860 --> 00:02:15.879 destroyed. Not just a roof taken off, no building 00:02:15.879 --> 00:02:19.120 left. It's just totally destroyed. And so we 00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:21.800 have a lot of work to do. Even though everyone 00:03:44.530 --> 00:03:47.889 paints this picture of Babylon and Bachelet in 00:03:47.889 --> 00:03:51.569 America, it's really not that way. Even when the news is not there, the church 00:04:29.839 --> 00:04:32.319 is still there and still rebuilding. And that's 00:04:32.319 --> 00:04:34.680 happening everywhere in the world. So I'm just 00:04:34.680 --> 00:04:37.379 saying that to say, be proud of the church. The book of Isaiah 00:06:18.060 --> 00:06:22.259 and Isaiah the prophet. with the most quoted 00:06:22.259 --> 00:06:26.779 prophet in the New Testament. More quoted by 00:06:26.779 --> 00:06:30.439 Paul, by Peter, more written about than any other 00:06:30.439 --> 00:06:32.779 prophet. And there's a reason why. Isaiah was 00:06:32.779 --> 00:06:36.699 a statesman and he was very systematic in his 00:06:36.699 --> 00:06:39.720 prophesying. Ezekiel and Daniel and different 00:06:39.720 --> 00:06:42.040 ones were a lot of historical prophecies about 00:06:42.040 --> 00:06:43.819 Judah and Israel and stuff that was going on 00:06:43.819 --> 00:06:46.389 and then end time stuff. kind of on top of that 00:06:46.389 --> 00:06:50.790 Isaiah was one of those kind of a prophets that 00:06:50.790 --> 00:06:53.490 prophesied like a teacher he prophesied like 00:06:53.490 --> 00:06:56.370 a lawyer he prophesied like a writer he prophesied 00:06:56.370 --> 00:07:00.170 in a systematic manner so that anybody could 00:07:00.170 --> 00:07:03.889 follow his prophecies so we have the most famous 00:07:03.889 --> 00:07:08.149 prophecies really about Christ are all in the 00:07:08.149 --> 00:07:10.649 book of Isaiah when it comes time for Easter 00:07:10.649 --> 00:07:14.129 we quote Isaiah 53 we go to Isaiah 53 we talk 00:07:14.129 --> 00:07:17.379 about 53. When it's Christmas, it's Isaiah 9, 00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:20.379 Isaiah 11. When we talk about the church, it's 00:07:20.379 --> 00:07:23.139 Isaiah 61. We talk about overcome on Isaiah 43. 00:07:23.480 --> 00:07:26.040 I mean, there's famous, famous scriptures throughout 00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:28.740 Isaiah that we quote all the time, and the Apostle 00:07:28.740 --> 00:07:32.639 Paul and Jesus quoted him all the time, and the 00:07:32.639 --> 00:07:35.959 Apostle Peter, and so he's a very important prophet. 00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:40.279 Isaiah prophesies about the Messiah, called Messianic 00:07:40.279 --> 00:07:42.540 prophecies, prophecies about the coming of Jesus 00:07:42.540 --> 00:07:45.480 and the Messiah. And he's the prophet who actually 00:07:45.480 --> 00:07:48.660 prophesies where Jesus is going to be born. He 00:07:48.660 --> 00:07:51.959 prophesies how Jesus is going to die. He prophesies 00:07:51.959 --> 00:07:55.120 the resurrection. He prophesies the entire ministry 00:07:55.120 --> 00:07:58.500 of Christ. He explains the ministry of Christ 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:02.000 to you in his prophecy. You can actually exegete 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:04.000 the Old Testament and end up with the New Testament 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:07.189 Jesus because Isaiah was so... so systematic 00:08:07.189 --> 00:08:11.370 and so clear when it came to the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:08:11.610 --> 00:08:15.009 Now, Isaiah chapter 61 is the scripture that 00:08:15.009 --> 00:08:16.810 I'm quoting to you this morning. Isaiah chapter 00:08:16.810 --> 00:08:20.050 61, which is also one of the most famous scriptures 00:08:20.050 --> 00:08:22.870 in the Bible because it talks about the spirit 00:08:22.870 --> 00:08:25.009 of the Lord coming upon us and what happens and 00:08:25.009 --> 00:08:27.509 upon the Messiah. And it's actually the job description 00:08:27.509 --> 00:08:31.470 of the Lord Jesus in Isaiah chapter 61. I'm going 00:08:31.470 --> 00:08:35.679 to go right to... Luke chapter 4, and I'm going 00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:37.559 to quote Luke chapter 4 in a moment. It might 00:08:37.559 --> 00:08:39.399 come up on the screen, but don't pull it up yet. 00:08:39.740 --> 00:08:43.360 But in Luke chapter 4, we're going to tie Isaiah 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:46.700 61 and Luke 4 together. And here's why it is 00:08:46.700 --> 00:08:50.379 so important. What's going to happen in the synagogue 00:08:50.379 --> 00:08:56.049 in that particular day? It's going to be... prophetic 00:08:56.049 --> 00:08:58.429 it's going to be history making it's going to 00:08:58.429 --> 00:09:01.490 be a shift in the heavenlies and the earth it's 00:09:01.490 --> 00:09:03.590 going to be something that had never happened 00:09:03.590 --> 00:09:06.830 before in the history of mankind it's going to 00:09:06.830 --> 00:09:11.169 happen in this little synagogue now the synagogues 00:09:11.169 --> 00:09:13.970 where Jesus was raised and it talks about this 00:09:13.970 --> 00:09:17.240 in Nazareth And it talks about Luke 4 and it 00:09:17.240 --> 00:09:19.539 explains that that was his town. Nazareth is 00:09:19.539 --> 00:09:22.639 only 6 ,000 people. It's a rural little town. 00:09:23.059 --> 00:09:25.980 And Jesus had four siblings, had a mother and 00:09:25.980 --> 00:09:28.440 a father. And we know that from Scripture. We 00:09:28.440 --> 00:09:31.360 know about Jesus' family. We know that he was 00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:34.000 a carpenter. We know that he lived in this little 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:37.519 town. And we know from what he says in Luke 4 00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:41.600 and other Scriptures that he went to the synagogue 00:09:41.600 --> 00:09:44.480 every Saturday. That's when they had the meeting. 00:09:44.549 --> 00:09:47.230 was the Sabbath, was Saturday. And so it says 00:09:47.230 --> 00:09:49.570 that his habit was to go there every Saturday. 00:09:49.649 --> 00:09:52.649 So him and his family would have been in church 00:09:52.649 --> 00:09:57.309 every Saturday, probably for the entire 30 years 00:09:57.309 --> 00:10:00.029 leading up to this particular scripture. Therefore, 00:10:00.149 --> 00:10:03.309 everybody would have known who Jesus the carpenter 00:10:03.309 --> 00:10:06.009 and Jesus of Nazareth and the father and the 00:10:06.009 --> 00:10:08.110 mother, the whole thing. It was no secret. He's 00:10:08.110 --> 00:10:09.870 sitting right there. He's in the midst. They 00:10:09.870 --> 00:10:12.809 had no idea who he was, but he was there in the 00:10:12.809 --> 00:10:17.750 midst. And the synagogue, they had, kind of like 00:10:17.750 --> 00:10:19.850 we do with churches, they had an agenda. That 00:10:19.850 --> 00:10:23.809 is, they would write out an agenda. And the synagogues 00:10:23.809 --> 00:10:26.230 that were larger, the ones closer to Jerusalem. 00:10:27.090 --> 00:10:29.870 actually had full -time priests. And so they 00:10:29.870 --> 00:10:33.429 were paid by the Levitical system and they were 00:10:33.429 --> 00:10:35.990 paid by the people's monies and they were actually 00:10:35.990 --> 00:10:39.409 full -time 24 -7 priests. But in the rural areas, 00:10:39.669 --> 00:10:42.309 they were not full -time. They were lay priests 00:10:42.309 --> 00:10:44.889 and they would have a different job and they 00:10:44.889 --> 00:10:47.330 would work in the synagogue on the Sabbath. And 00:10:47.330 --> 00:10:49.629 because of that, they would lay out a different 00:10:49.629 --> 00:10:52.789 agenda that would have to be written out long 00:10:52.789 --> 00:10:56.549 before the actual Sabbath. actually took place 00:10:56.549 --> 00:10:59.690 in the synagogue about 12 months ahead they would 00:10:59.690 --> 00:11:02.149 plan a whole 12 month agenda just like we do 00:11:02.149 --> 00:11:04.990 as a church and they would have to plan the readings 00:11:04.990 --> 00:11:06.929 of all the scripture they would have to plan 00:11:06.929 --> 00:11:09.429 the opener they'd have to plan what psalms they 00:11:09.429 --> 00:11:11.250 were going to sing they would have to plan what 00:11:11.250 --> 00:11:13.389 priest was overseeing that day and they would 00:11:13.389 --> 00:11:16.450 rotate that out and then report to jerusalem 00:11:16.450 --> 00:11:19.250 priests who was actually like over that suburb 00:11:19.250 --> 00:11:21.230 and that's how the system worked according to 00:11:21.230 --> 00:11:24.190 josephus the historian who is the historian for 00:11:24.190 --> 00:11:27.429 the jews and the Jewish history, Josephus explains 00:11:27.429 --> 00:11:29.870 the whole thing. And so when you think about 00:11:29.870 --> 00:11:32.169 the synagogue and the part -time priests or the 00:11:32.169 --> 00:11:35.409 lay priests and what they're doing and the reading 00:11:35.409 --> 00:11:37.610 of scriptures, remember they had no New Testament. 00:11:38.230 --> 00:11:41.389 And so the reading of scriptures was with scrolls. 00:11:41.389 --> 00:11:45.149 There was no books. There was only scrolls. And 00:11:45.149 --> 00:11:49.070 the scrolls were very big, very bulky, and very 00:11:49.070 --> 00:11:52.100 hard to handle. They weren't like... And they would place the manuscripts in 00:12:24.039 --> 00:12:28.080 the holes. So that they could plan the reading 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:30.759 of the manuscripts. So that whoever is reading 00:12:30.759 --> 00:12:34.120 on that particular Sabbath. That person couldn't 00:12:34.120 --> 00:12:38.279 say, bring me Habakkuk or bring me Ezekiel or 00:12:38.279 --> 00:12:40.620 does anybody have the scroll? The scrolls all 00:12:40.620 --> 00:12:43.039 had to be planned, had to be found, had to be 00:12:43.039 --> 00:12:45.500 placed, had to be in order, what chapter was 00:12:45.500 --> 00:12:47.379 going to be read so that they could reach down, 00:12:47.480 --> 00:12:49.960 take it, open it up. There's only about 150 people in the room. 00:13:33.309 --> 00:13:36.190 That's the size of the synagogue. And so when 00:13:36.190 --> 00:13:39.309 they came to the synagogue that day, they were 00:13:39.309 --> 00:13:41.110 going to be introduced to something that would 00:13:41.110 --> 00:13:45.190 be a miracle of miracles because for the first 00:13:45.190 --> 00:13:49.490 time, the first time, and I can't remember when 00:13:49.490 --> 00:13:54.169 else this happened, but for the first time, the 00:13:54.169 --> 00:13:59.509 prophecy about the Messiah And the fulfillment 00:13:59.509 --> 00:14:04.570 of the prophecy. And the person who the prophecy 00:14:04.570 --> 00:14:07.669 was about was all going to emerge at the same 00:14:07.669 --> 00:14:12.429 time. And so the prophecy of Isaiah was 750 years 00:14:12.429 --> 00:14:16.730 prior to Christ. And so you go forward 750 years 00:14:16.730 --> 00:14:20.429 and you have this Isaiah 61 scroll. It had been 00:14:20.429 --> 00:14:23.850 placed in the desk to be read on that particular 00:14:23.850 --> 00:14:27.559 Sabbath. And lo and behold, the reader has been 00:14:27.559 --> 00:14:30.320 assigned, and the reader is Jesus of Nazareth, 00:14:30.500 --> 00:14:34.480 the carpenter. And so now on this day, which 00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:37.419 had been planned long before, there was no surprises 00:14:37.419 --> 00:14:40.460 on this except nobody expected what was going 00:14:40.460 --> 00:14:43.480 to happen when this prophecy was read because 00:14:43.480 --> 00:14:46.059 it was the launching of its ministry. All heaven 00:14:46.059 --> 00:14:49.659 was waiting 750 years for this prophecy to start 00:14:49.659 --> 00:14:51.740 because this would start the ministry of Christ, 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:54.299 the new day. It would actually be the introduction 00:14:54.299 --> 00:14:56.879 of a new era. They would move from law to grace 00:14:56.879 --> 00:14:59.740 in one breath. They would move from old to new 00:14:59.740 --> 00:15:02.080 in one breath. They would move from Jesus. hidden 00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:05.320 to Jesus revealed in one breath. And sometimes we forget 00:16:02.429 --> 00:16:05.110 all that and we kind of get bogged down. We get 00:16:05.110 --> 00:16:08.370 bogged down. We get beat up. We get eclipsed 00:16:08.370 --> 00:16:12.470 by things. We get smothered. We get sidetracked. 00:16:12.690 --> 00:16:16.370 We get... Sinful habits that take over. That is that.
