And the big idea that I am driving 00:01:01.350 --> 00:01:03.250 home that you can write down, it'll be right 00:01:03.250 --> 00:01:07.709 up here, is Christ's revolution is not about 00:01:07.709 --> 00:01:11.849 power, might, and weapons, but about weakness, 00:01:12.370 --> 00:01:15.129 obedience, and resting in the sovereign plan 00:01:15.129 --> 00:01:25.750 and finished work of Christ. The 00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:06.500 shame and honor culture basically means this. 00:04:06.580 --> 00:04:10.099 You don't do it because it would make you a despicable 00:04:10.099 --> 00:04:16.680 person, unworthy of respect. And it could also 00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:24.199 dishonor your family, right? So that's one. People 00:04:24.199 --> 00:04:28.240 would despise you for picking on the weak and 00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:31.160 you would despise yourself for doing it, hopefully 00:04:31.160 --> 00:04:36.879 so. Whatever background they came from no 00:07:26.209 --> 00:07:30.350 one ever picked the first one They always pick 00:07:30.350 --> 00:07:38.670 the second one. Why do you think that is? Yeah, 00:07:38.889 --> 00:07:40.930 you start worrying about it comes back to the 00:07:40.930 --> 00:07:43.410 shame and honor thing right You start thinking 00:07:43.410 --> 00:07:45.470 about what is what what are other people gonna 00:07:45.470 --> 00:07:48.990 think about me, right? But here's what's awesome 00:07:48.990 --> 00:07:54.300 And this is what the professor would point out 00:07:54.300 --> 00:07:56.959 to them. He said, you may not realize it, but 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:00.040 the idea that you put the other person ahead 00:08:00.040 --> 00:08:02.500 of yourself rather than thinking of yourself 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:09.459 first comes from Christianity. Your morals have 00:08:09.459 --> 00:08:12.180 been shaped by Christianity. He described it 00:08:12.180 --> 00:08:15.860 this way. An ethical system based on honor is 00:08:15.860 --> 00:08:21.019 self -regarding, while one based on charity is 00:08:21.019 --> 00:08:24.879 other -regarding. With honor goes pride rather 00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:28.860 than humility, dominance rather than service, 00:08:29.480 --> 00:08:33.580 courage rather than peaceableness, glory rather 00:08:33.580 --> 00:08:37.419 than modesty, loyalty rather than respect for 00:08:37.419 --> 00:08:49.399 all. So he says, think about it. That's one of 00:08:49.399 --> 00:08:51.700 my favorite things, by the way, whenever I am... 00:08:53.210 --> 00:08:55.549 doing a lot of apologetic stuff. And when I would 00:08:55.549 --> 00:08:57.870 go on the campus and talk to college students, 00:08:57.950 --> 00:09:02.169 one of my favorite things, defenses, is a defense 00:09:02.169 --> 00:09:07.230 for a moral system. Because the one thing, if 00:09:07.230 --> 00:09:10.110 you're here this morning and you are not a believer, 00:09:11.230 --> 00:09:14.149 you would say you don't believe in anything. 00:09:14.889 --> 00:09:17.210 The biggest thing that you have going against 00:09:17.210 --> 00:09:22.110 you is you live a life of morals. and can't explain 00:09:22.110 --> 00:09:27.210 why. And that was the professor's point that 00:09:27.210 --> 00:09:31.549 Christianity has so shaped the world and especially 00:09:31.549 --> 00:09:36.250 our country but the world that they know to be 00:09:36.250 --> 00:09:39.769 others facing even if they are inward facing, 00:09:40.149 --> 00:09:43.789 right? His whole point was just think about for 00:09:43.789 --> 00:09:47.250 a moment how Christianity has impacted your life 00:09:47.250 --> 00:09:50.679 and you didn't even realize it. Pretty incredible, 00:09:50.700 --> 00:09:53.080 right? I would say that's a pretty incredible 00:09:53.080 --> 00:09:58.820 revolution. And so, think about this. How many 00:09:58.820 --> 00:10:01.480 ethical systems throughout history have been 00:10:01.480 --> 00:10:06.559 built around honor and shame? Almost all of them. 00:10:07.799 --> 00:10:10.179 Civilizations were dominated by this way of thinking, 00:10:10.259 --> 00:10:13.159 but then something happened that began to shape 00:10:13.159 --> 00:10:16.139 cultures and civilizations in a radically different 00:10:16.139 --> 00:10:20.590 way. What do you think that was? Christianity, 00:10:20.590 --> 00:10:24.950 right? Most people, including college students, 00:10:25.070 --> 00:10:27.669 have never stopped to consider just how deeply 00:10:27.669 --> 00:10:30.370 Christianity has shaped the way they think about 00:10:30.370 --> 00:10:33.269 right and wrong. Even those who are critical 00:10:33.269 --> 00:10:36.129 of the church and Christianity, they will rant 00:10:36.129 --> 00:10:39.389 about Christianity and the church and all that's 00:10:39.389 --> 00:10:42.190 wrong with it. And then when you start to really 00:10:42.190 --> 00:10:45.570 burrow down, my favorite thing is to go, so you 00:10:45.570 --> 00:10:48.539 just want a better Christianity. A pure Christianity, 00:10:48.620 --> 00:10:51.120 one that looks truly like Christ. Yeah, me too! 00:10:51.700 --> 00:10:56.200 Right? So they believe that we're wrong, but 00:10:56.200 --> 00:10:58.779 then as they start to really work it down, they 00:10:58.779 --> 00:11:04.299 start going, oh man, I am really living a life 00:11:04.299 --> 00:11:06.179 of a Christian even though they are not Christians. 00:11:06.279 --> 00:11:09.860 Does that make sense what I'm saying? And so 00:11:09.860 --> 00:11:13.220 what are these distinctly Christian ideas that 00:11:13.220 --> 00:11:15.720 still have the power to shape our consciousness 00:11:15.720 --> 00:11:18.809 today? And that's what we're gonna discuss this 00:11:18.809 --> 00:11:22.190 morning. Before we go to our main text, I want 00:11:22.190 --> 00:11:25.129 us to go to, turn with me to Luke chapter six, 00:11:25.669 --> 00:11:27.149 because I wanna show you guys something. Luke 00:11:27.149 --> 00:11:29.269 chapter six, and we're gonna start in verse 22. 00:11:43.110 --> 00:11:46.879 Luke chapter six, starting in verse 20. This 00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:50.399 is also in Matthew chapter five, by the way. 00:11:50.679 --> 00:11:54.279 It's known as the Beatitudes. So we're gonna 00:11:54.279 --> 00:11:59.559 read 20 through 22, and then I'm going to go 00:11:59.559 --> 00:12:03.440 down to 24 and 26. And he lifted up his eyes 00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:06.279 on his disciples and said, blessed are you who 00:12:06.279 --> 00:12:10.950 are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed 00:12:10.950 --> 00:12:14.110 are you who are hungry now for you shall be satisfied. 00:12:14.269 --> 00:12:17.909 Blessed are you who weep now for you shall laugh. 00:12:18.830 --> 00:12:21.110 Blessed are you when people hate you and when 00:12:21.110 --> 00:12:24.090 they exclude you and revile you and spurn your 00:12:24.090 --> 00:12:26.850 name as evil on the account of the Son of Man. 00:12:27.250 --> 00:12:31.049 Rejoice on that day and leap for joy for behold 00:12:31.049 --> 00:12:33.889 your reward is great in heaven and for so their 00:12:33.889 --> 00:12:38.129 fathers did to the prophets. So, here Jesus is giving us 00:13:03.899 --> 00:13:07.460 a very concise picture of the contrast between 00:13:07.460 --> 00:13:13.340 his kingdom and a worldly kingdom. So real quickly, 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:16.600 again, we're in ethics class. Let's do this together. 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:21.139 What are the things that you see being set apart 00:13:21.139 --> 00:13:26.220 that are values of the kingdom and values of 00:13:26.220 --> 00:13:30.899 the world? Because Jesus is comparing and contrasting, 00:13:30.899 --> 00:13:33.600 right? Because here's something we need to think 00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:38.690 about. No matter the political group, Democrat, 00:13:38.850 --> 00:13:41.590 Republican, Independent, Libertarian, whatever, 00:13:42.210 --> 00:13:45.309 everybody has a value system that they're pushing, 00:13:45.490 --> 00:13:50.250 right? The farther we go down the road, the more 00:13:50.250 --> 00:13:53.009 the value systems go like this, but here's the 00:13:53.009 --> 00:13:57.389 difference though. Here's why none of them are 00:13:57.389 --> 00:14:00.190 the kingdom of God values, because at the end 00:14:00.190 --> 00:14:03.669 of the day, what sits upon the top of those value 00:14:03.669 --> 00:14:06.779 systems for those political organizations is 00:14:06.779 --> 00:14:11.559 power, money, and politics. Then the rest of 00:14:11.559 --> 00:14:15.240 the values flow from underneath that. But Jesus, 00:14:15.440 --> 00:14:19.980 it goes the other way around. So, what are the 00:14:19.980 --> 00:14:23.679 values that you see in Luke chapter six, Jesus 00:14:23.679 --> 00:14:26.940 pointing out the different value systems? What 00:14:26.940 --> 00:14:36.919 do you see? Poverty? And I'm going to go into 00:14:36.919 --> 00:14:40.179 a little bit more of that too. So in case anyone's 00:14:40.179 --> 00:14:42.320 like, so does that mean if you've got money, 00:14:42.500 --> 00:14:44.519 any sort of money, any sort of a jingle in your 00:14:44.519 --> 00:14:47.120 pocket, you're going to hell? Nope. I'll go into 00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:51.460 that a little bit. But poverty, okay. Poverty 00:14:51.460 --> 00:15:01.759 represents what? What? Humility. I have weakness, 00:15:03.220 --> 00:15:16.299 right? What else do we see? Yeah Again weakness 00:15:16.299 --> 00:15:20.840 and poverty, right? What about if you're going 00:15:20.840 --> 00:15:23.039 hungry now like you're pointing out if you're 00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:27.379 going hungry now What what does what is that? 00:15:27.460 --> 00:15:31.279 That's a suffering, right? So suffering and then 00:15:31.279 --> 00:15:34.659 there was another part there where he talks about 00:15:34.720 --> 00:15:40.759 for you will be something because of me? Rejected, 00:15:40.799 --> 00:15:43.980 right? So you have in the system of the kingdom 00:15:43.980 --> 00:15:46.620 of God, you have a weakness of poverty, suffering 00:15:46.620 --> 00:15:50.860 and rejection, but then the list is inverted. 00:15:51.840 --> 00:15:54.320 So in the kingdom of God, that list is inverted, 00:15:54.460 --> 00:15:58.820 right? So, but now you go to the bottom and you 00:15:58.820 --> 00:16:04.039 see him going, okay, but for those who are rich, 00:16:04.220 --> 00:16:07.779 Boom. For those whose name is bright reputation, 00:16:07.919 --> 00:16:11.899 boom. He's saying he's giving you the flips, 00:16:12.100 --> 00:16:15.480 right? The invertedness. So the reason why I 00:16:15.480 --> 00:16:19.720 point that stuff out is because in Mark 14, we're 00:16:19.720 --> 00:16:22.379 going to see a revolution unlike any revolution 00:16:22.379 --> 00:16:24.759 the world has ever seen. It will begin with a 00:16:24.759 --> 00:16:29.480 kiss of betrayal, swords and soldiers, but it 00:16:29.480 --> 00:16:31.960 will not advance through power, might or weapons. 00:16:32.250 --> 00:16:34.929 Christ's revolution will advance through weakness, 00:16:35.370 --> 00:16:38.409 obedience, and resting in the sovereign plan 00:16:38.409 --> 00:16:40.350 of the Father. You guys know the saying, the kiss 00:19:10.299 --> 00:19:15.039 of death, a kiss of death? It's in our dictionaries. 00:19:16.140 --> 00:19:19.819 I didn't know this until now, but kiss of death, 00:19:20.119 --> 00:19:23.859 because like I always hear when I hear, when 00:19:23.859 --> 00:19:26.960 I say it out loud, when I read it, I hear Cy 00:19:26.960 --> 00:19:29.480 Robertson from Duck Dynasty who's like, give 00:19:29.480 --> 00:19:32.019 them the kiss of death, like when they're hunting 00:19:32.019 --> 00:19:36.039 beavers. So that's what I hear. I didn't realize 00:19:36.039 --> 00:19:41.180 that kiss of death, literally from our pop culture 00:19:41.180 --> 00:19:44.220 to our dictionary, it comes from this. It comes 00:19:44.220 --> 00:19:50.619 from Judas. So it refers to, write this down. 00:19:52.329 --> 00:19:55.250 It refers to an intimacy with something that 00:19:55.250 --> 00:20:00.289 ultimately causes your destruction.
