Kind of like 00:04:59.009 --> 00:05:01.829 that Spider -Man meme where they're all looking 00:05:01.829 --> 00:05:04.850 at each other. You know, it's my parents' problem. 00:05:04.990 --> 00:05:08.069 It's my spouse. It's my kids. It's my boss. It's 00:05:08.069 --> 00:05:10.470 my finances. It's the church I grew up in. It's 00:05:10.470 --> 00:05:12.769 the town I grew up in. It's the friends I have. 00:05:13.310 --> 00:05:19.129 It's always somebody else. It's never us. But for the most part, what I'm talking 00:05:38.680 --> 00:05:41.439 about, 75 % of the time when I'm counseling, 00:05:41.540 --> 00:05:45.100 it is always the person that's sitting in front 00:05:45.100 --> 00:05:47.939 of me and when they begin to say the things out 00:05:47.939 --> 00:05:52.660 loud, they begin to hear it. So the biggest problem 00:05:52.660 --> 00:05:58.480 isn't out there, the biggest problem is in here, 00:05:58.759 --> 00:06:05.139 right? So I want you to write this down. The 00:06:05.139 --> 00:06:07.779 Bible teaches that our greatest issue is not 00:06:07.779 --> 00:06:11.819 our environment, our circumstances, or even other 00:06:11.819 --> 00:06:15.660 people. Our greatest issue is the sinful heart 00:06:15.660 --> 00:06:23.259 we carry around everywhere we go. This morning 00:06:23.259 --> 00:06:26.759 we're gonna look at the Pharisees and the teachers 00:06:26.759 --> 00:06:28.600 of the law. They come to Jesus and they're trying 00:06:28.600 --> 00:06:34.040 to get him tripped up because they're really 00:06:34.040 --> 00:06:37.819 upset with how the disciples are handling some 00:06:37.819 --> 00:06:44.480 tradition. And instead of catching Jesus in this 00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:48.240 Catch -22, he turns it on them, which Jesus is 00:06:48.240 --> 00:06:51.529 really good at. So he turns this conversation 00:06:51.529 --> 00:06:56.009 upside down and he exposes not the disciples 00:06:56.009 --> 00:06:57.689 dirty hands, as we're going to look at in just 00:06:57.689 --> 00:07:01.290 a second, but he exposes dirty hearts. Instead 00:07:01.290 --> 00:07:04.110 of focusing on external stains, he reveals the 00:07:04.110 --> 00:07:08.389 internal source of our defilement. And in doing 00:07:08.389 --> 00:07:11.470 so, he teaches us the truth, the truth that every 00:07:11.470 --> 00:07:15.490 one of us needs to hear. The stains on our lives 00:07:15.490 --> 00:07:18.509 don't originate from the outside. They flow from 00:07:18.509 --> 00:07:21.240 the inside. So let's go ahead and let's read 00:07:21.240 --> 00:07:29.379 Mark chapter seven together. Now when the Pharisees 00:07:29.379 --> 00:07:33.220 gathered to him with some of the scribes who 00:07:33.220 --> 00:07:35.540 had come from Jerusalem, they saw some of the 00:07:35.540 --> 00:07:40.180 disciples ate with their hands that were defiled. 00:07:40.879 --> 00:07:44.319 That is they were unwashed. For the Pharisees 00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:46.720 and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash 00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:49.490 their hands properly. holding to the tradition 00:07:49.490 --> 00:07:52.350 of the elders. And when they came from the marketplace, 00:07:53.110 --> 00:07:56.370 they do not eat unless they wash. And there are 00:07:56.370 --> 00:07:59.089 many other traditions that they observe, such 00:07:59.089 --> 00:08:03.490 as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels 00:08:03.490 --> 00:08:07.430 and dining couches. And the Pharisees and the 00:08:07.430 --> 00:08:09.430 scribes asked him, why do your disciples not 00:08:09.430 --> 00:08:11.189 walk according to the tradition of the elders, 00:08:11.290 --> 00:08:15.050 but eat with the filed hands? And he said to 00:08:15.050 --> 00:08:19.079 them, well, Did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites 00:08:19.079 --> 00:08:22.139 as it is written? This people honors me with 00:08:22.139 --> 00:08:24.920 their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 00:08:25.459 --> 00:08:29.259 In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines, 00:08:29.600 --> 00:08:32.919 the commandments of men. You leave the commandment 00:08:32.919 --> 00:08:36.100 of God and hold the tradition of men. And he 00:08:36.100 --> 00:08:39.039 said to them, you have a fine way of rejecting 00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:41.559 the commandment of God in order to establish 00:08:41.559 --> 00:08:45.620 your tradition. For Moses said, honor your father 00:08:45.620 --> 00:08:48.190 and mother. And whoever reviles the father or 00:08:48.190 --> 00:08:52.330 mother must surely die. But you say, if a man 00:08:52.330 --> 00:08:54.750 tells his father or his mother, whatever you 00:08:54.750 --> 00:08:58.289 would have gained from me is Corbin, that is 00:08:58.289 --> 00:09:01.769 given to God, then you no longer permit him to 00:09:01.769 --> 00:09:04.250 do anything for his father or mother, thus making 00:09:04.250 --> 00:09:07.570 void the word of God by your tradition that you 00:09:07.570 --> 00:09:10.710 have handed down and many such things you do. 00:09:11.590 --> 00:09:14.429 And he called the people to him again and said 00:09:14.429 --> 00:09:18.870 to them, hear me. all and understand. But the things that 00:09:23.850 --> 00:09:27.730 come out of a person are what defile him. No. If we just had a 00:10:55.250 --> 00:10:57.509 different president, well, we change pretty much 00:10:57.509 --> 00:11:00.809 one every four to eight years and nothing changes. 00:11:00.870 --> 00:11:03.669 We still have crime rampant, right? We still 00:11:03.669 --> 00:11:07.110 have not enough money at the end of the month. 00:11:08.429 --> 00:11:11.330 And so we tend to think that these outside things 00:11:11.330 --> 00:11:16.799 will change The problem. Now, should we vote? 00:11:16.899 --> 00:11:19.559 Yes. Should we vote with our convictions? Yes. 00:11:19.860 --> 00:11:22.519 But what I'm saying is, it's not out there that's 00:11:22.519 --> 00:11:27.279 the issue. It starts here. And that's Jesus' 00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:33.899 point. And so, the problem with religious people, 00:11:34.620 --> 00:11:38.259 and I know because I am one, is that we love 00:11:38.259 --> 00:11:41.539 boundaries. We like rules and we like checklists. 00:11:42.599 --> 00:11:46.559 We like knowing where the line is. We like measurable 00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:49.840 obedience. We like being able to point to something 00:11:49.840 --> 00:11:53.399 and say, see, I did that. You understand what 00:11:53.399 --> 00:11:59.539 I mean? Like, if you know exactly what the line 00:11:59.539 --> 00:12:02.419 is, then you go, I can go all the way up to that 00:12:02.419 --> 00:12:03.980 line. And as long as I don't cross that line, 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:08.200 I'm not sending. Okay. Does that make sense? 00:12:09.740 --> 00:12:13.600 Because what's happening here is it's not about 00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:16.000 the God that we serve and honoring him, it's 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.100 about how close can I get before I'm actually 00:12:19.100 --> 00:12:24.320 breaking the rules or sinning. And so the Pharisees 00:12:24.320 --> 00:12:26.440 were masters of this. Throughout the Old Testament, 00:12:26.659 --> 00:12:29.080 Israel knew God's law. They could recite it, 00:12:29.080 --> 00:12:31.679 they could teach it, they could tell you what 00:12:31.679 --> 00:12:33.899 was clean, what was unclean, what was right and 00:12:33.899 --> 00:12:37.120 what was wrong. Yet one accusation keeps showing 00:12:37.120 --> 00:12:40.250 up again and again. And again, what do you think 00:12:40.250 --> 00:12:42.529 that accusation is? Jesus just said it. He quoted 00:12:42.529 --> 00:12:47.330 it from Isaiah. What did he say? These people 00:12:47.330 --> 00:12:52.750 honor me with their lips, but their what? Their 00:12:52.750 --> 00:12:56.690 hearts are far from me. And this is the issue. 00:12:58.529 --> 00:13:02.889 Everybody all right back there? OK, man. I don't 00:13:02.889 --> 00:13:05.009 usually that just sounded like somebody died. 00:13:06.909 --> 00:13:09.409 Their problem wasn't a lack of information. Their 00:13:09.409 --> 00:13:11.450 problem wasn't a lack of religious activity and 00:13:11.450 --> 00:13:15.690 their problem was a heart problem. And if we're 00:13:15.690 --> 00:13:19.009 honest, we're not much different. We can convince 00:13:19.009 --> 00:13:21.149 ourselves that God will surely be pleased with 00:13:21.149 --> 00:13:24.029 us because we don't watch filthy movies or we 00:13:24.029 --> 00:13:30.429 don't listen to Taylor Swift. Skip church, cuss, 00:13:30.610 --> 00:13:32.129 chew, hang out with those who do. That's what 00:13:32.129 --> 00:13:34.269 my mom always said. We don't cuss, chew and hang 00:13:34.269 --> 00:13:38.649 out with those who do. Do things that generally 00:13:38.840 --> 00:13:41.720 Do those things generally look good? So the Pharisees are upset because the 00:14:09.370 --> 00:14:12.110 disciples didn't perform a ceremonial hand washing 00:14:12.110 --> 00:14:18.230 before eating. Now, does Jesus condemn good hygiene? 00:14:19.929 --> 00:14:22.870 No, Jesus wouldn't disagree with washing your 00:14:22.870 --> 00:14:26.509 hands. I think we would all agree that washing 00:14:26.509 --> 00:14:28.730 your hands before you eat is a good thing. Yes. 00:14:29.090 --> 00:14:33.529 Yeah. Okay. Theo, you gave me a smirk. So think of it like this. Why is that 00:14:46.340 --> 00:14:50.940 a thing? Why is washing your hands before eating, 00:14:51.559 --> 00:14:53.980 not touching dead things, why was that a big 00:14:53.980 --> 00:14:56.460 deal? Especially, I mean, it is now, why was 00:14:56.460 --> 00:15:03.279 it especially then? Yeah, yeah. The rest of all 00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:09.899 of the other pagans and the other peoples didn't 00:15:09.899 --> 00:15:11.840 wash their hands. They're dying of sickness and 00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:15.740 disease. And so what had happened was is that 00:17:14.970 --> 00:17:17.609 that love was completely disconnected and they 00:17:17.609 --> 00:17:19.529 just did it because it was well, this is a rule. 00:17:20.069 --> 00:17:26.150 We do this because. Does that make sense? So. 00:17:26.799 --> 00:17:30.680 The issue again is about dirty hearts, not dirty 00:17:30.680 --> 00:17:37.259 hands. They were super good and they were super 00:17:37.259 --> 00:17:39.799 experts at external religion while remaining 00:17:39.799 --> 00:17:43.460 strangers to internal transformation. And the 00:17:43.460 --> 00:17:45.940 modern world hates the idea that we ourselves 00:17:45.940 --> 00:17:49.599 are the problem. We want to blame our circumstances, 00:17:50.339 --> 00:17:53.420 our upbringing, our environment, politicians, 00:17:53.819 --> 00:17:56.359 parents, spouses, as I've said, or our culture. 00:17:56.670 --> 00:17:59.730 But Jesus says the real problem runs deeper than 00:17:59.730 --> 00:18:04.230 that, and it is us. The stain isn't merely around 00:18:04.230 --> 00:18:08.329 us, the stain is within us, which leads us to 00:18:08.329 --> 00:18:16.950 Jesus' next point. It has to be the answer, inside 00:18:16.950 --> 00:18:30.309 out cleansing. Inside out cleansing.
