And we got into a 00:00:34.700 --> 00:00:38.539 little bit about demonology, just a touch. And 00:00:38.539 --> 00:00:43.560 I shared that. I don't what I believe demons 00:00:43.560 --> 00:00:46.960 are, what I think is the biblical presence, precedence 00:00:46.960 --> 00:00:49.899 for demons, and that is that they are the disembodied 00:00:49.899 --> 00:00:55.280 spirits of Nephilim. And I knew that. It would 00:00:55.280 --> 00:00:57.939 cause some questions, which is good. And I'm 00:00:57.939 --> 00:01:00.299 glad. And so I had one of our members reach out 00:01:00.299 --> 00:01:02.979 and they asked, well, what about the sethite 00:01:02.979 --> 00:01:06.019 view? Because that's what I thought Genesis six 00:01:06.019 --> 00:01:08.420 was about. But I'm not sure what to do with Nephilim 00:01:08.420 --> 00:01:12.159 and all that jazz. So this is a great, great 00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:14.560 question. And if you're not familiar with the 00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:17.780 sethite view, that's OK. I'm going to give you 00:01:17.780 --> 00:01:21.099 what the sethite view is in just a moment. But 00:01:21.099 --> 00:01:24.819 I will tell you that. I held the Sethite view. 00:01:24.840 --> 00:01:26.819 There's actually four views of Genesis six and 00:01:26.819 --> 00:01:28.939 you may be going, what is Genesis six? Well, 00:01:28.939 --> 00:01:32.819 I will read it. Let me grab a Bible here and 00:01:32.819 --> 00:01:39.120 turn to Genesis six. It's a passage that typically, 00:01:39.519 --> 00:01:45.219 specifically we as Americans in church don't. 00:01:45.599 --> 00:01:48.019 Like to wrestle with, and we don't hear a lot 00:01:48.019 --> 00:01:51.579 of sermons about it, but when you when you get. 00:01:51.849 --> 00:01:54.189 into the nitty gritty of it. And you actually 00:01:54.189 --> 00:01:58.170 get a biblical defense for Genesis six. Then 00:01:58.170 --> 00:02:01.870 you begin to see how all of scripture makes sense. 00:02:03.129 --> 00:02:06.230 And here's Genesis six, OK, Genesis six, starting 00:02:06.230 --> 00:02:08.969 verse one, it says when man began to multiply 00:02:08.969 --> 00:02:11.189 on the face of the land and daughters were born 00:02:11.189 --> 00:02:14.430 to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters 00:02:14.430 --> 00:02:17.830 of man were attractive and they took as their 00:02:17.830 --> 00:02:21.469 wives any they chose. Then the Lord said to them, 00:02:21.689 --> 00:02:24.569 My spirit shall not abide in man forever, for 00:02:24.569 --> 00:02:27.250 he is flesh. His day shall be one hundred and 00:02:27.250 --> 00:02:30.509 twenty years. The Nephilim. So that's verse four. 00:02:30.590 --> 00:02:33.530 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days 00:02:33.530 --> 00:02:36.810 and also afterward when the sons of God came 00:02:36.810 --> 00:02:40.110 into the daughters of man and they bore children 00:02:40.110 --> 00:02:43.629 to them. These were the mighty men who were of 00:02:43.629 --> 00:02:49.629 old, the men of renown. So what do we do with 00:02:49.629 --> 00:02:53.870 that? So Let me go back. So again, I held to 00:02:53.870 --> 00:02:56.710 for a very long time the sethite view and there's 00:02:56.710 --> 00:02:58.849 four actual views. I won't go into the other 00:02:58.849 --> 00:03:01.990 the other two because they're just not to me. 00:03:02.110 --> 00:03:06.710 They're they're not even close to being. Correct. 00:03:06.870 --> 00:03:11.969 And so. I didn't want to take on the Nephilim 00:03:11.969 --> 00:03:17.650 giant angels cohabitating with humans view because 00:03:17.650 --> 00:03:23.650 I felt. It tapped too much into my charismatic 00:03:23.650 --> 00:03:26.289 Pentecostal upbringing of kookiness and weirdness. 00:03:26.710 --> 00:03:29.969 And I just wanted to put that stuff away. And 00:03:29.969 --> 00:03:33.409 it wasn't until I was graduating with my undergrad 00:03:33.409 --> 00:03:35.789 at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary that 00:03:35.789 --> 00:03:40.389 one of the professors came in and he just said, 00:03:40.629 --> 00:03:44.770 hey, read Genesis six. This was literally like 00:03:44.770 --> 00:03:47.599 right before. We're practicing for graduation. 00:03:47.800 --> 00:03:50.979 He comes in and he says, uh, into a room, there's 00:03:50.979 --> 00:03:55.479 about a hundred of us in this room. And he says, 00:03:55.979 --> 00:03:58.699 uh, here's the four views of Genesis six. You 00:03:58.699 --> 00:04:01.319 read Genesis six, and then you tell me, you give 00:04:01.319 --> 00:04:06.219 me a defense for why that is. So I went into 00:04:06.219 --> 00:04:09.860 the view of set that view mostly because when 00:04:09.860 --> 00:04:13.340 I read it in context, it feels like. You know, 00:04:13.340 --> 00:04:15.240 it's going through the genealogy, it's going 00:04:15.240 --> 00:04:20.300 through, you know, creation, the creation account, 00:04:20.379 --> 00:04:23.899 the sin account, all that jazz. And we're getting 00:04:23.899 --> 00:04:25.459 all the genealogy. And then all of a sudden, 00:04:25.480 --> 00:04:27.500 it's just like, boom, out of nowhere, it feels 00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:30.259 like where in the world did this come from? And 00:04:30.259 --> 00:04:32.480 so for me, logically, I was going, all right, 00:04:32.560 --> 00:04:35.180 well, I'm going logically based on context. Well, 00:04:36.040 --> 00:04:39.800 something very interesting was all of the Hebrew. 00:04:43.090 --> 00:04:48.430 scholar majors, those that specialized with their 00:04:48.430 --> 00:04:53.649 degree in the biblical languages, all held to 00:04:53.649 --> 00:04:58.129 the Nephilim, sons of God, divine counsel view. 00:04:59.069 --> 00:05:02.550 I will go into that in just a minute. And I couldn't 00:05:02.550 --> 00:05:08.269 understand it. And then slowly, I just began 00:05:08.269 --> 00:05:12.060 to meet people. And then my Hebrew professor, 00:05:12.220 --> 00:05:16.180 which I will quote a lot of Dr. Michael Heiser, 00:05:16.420 --> 00:05:19.259 reason being is because he, God rest his soul, 00:05:19.259 --> 00:05:24.600 he just passed away a year or two ago. But he 00:05:24.600 --> 00:05:26.879 was a conservative scholar. He's the brainchild 00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:30.279 behind Logos Bible Software. But he's also the 00:05:30.279 --> 00:05:33.720 world leading expert on ancient languages. And, 00:05:33.720 --> 00:05:40.699 and so He he was really influential and for me 00:05:40.699 --> 00:05:45.360 to start to understand, oh, the Bible is completely 00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:48.519 supernatural and I can't just in my own discomfort 00:05:48.519 --> 00:05:53.459 sanitize it because it feels kooky. And he would 00:05:53.459 --> 00:05:56.120 he was famous for saying in the the weird parts 00:05:56.120 --> 00:05:58.920 of the Bible are not meant to be explained away, 00:05:58.920 --> 00:06:00.959 but they're important and for us to truly dig 00:06:00.959 --> 00:06:03.120 in to understand it. And we should try to understand 00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:07.439 it from the standpoint of. the way the ancient 00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:10.639 Hebrews and the early church, like how they understood 00:06:10.639 --> 00:06:16.120 it. And so the Sethite view would be this, that, 00:06:16.120 --> 00:06:20.259 oh, it wasn't angels. Sons of God does not mean 00:06:20.259 --> 00:06:25.040 angels coming down and rebelling against God 00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:29.220 and having sex with women. It means sons of God, 00:06:29.379 --> 00:06:34.350 as in Seth, the biblical line of God. cohabitating 00:06:34.350 --> 00:06:42.029 with the daughters of Cain and creating another, 00:06:42.389 --> 00:06:48.490 what we would say is a sinful line, not a supernatural 00:06:48.490 --> 00:06:53.889 line, but just they were conceived in sin, right? 00:06:54.250 --> 00:06:57.009 So with that being said, that's the Sethite view. 00:06:57.990 --> 00:07:01.670 I take a now a very literal view of what the 00:07:01.670 --> 00:07:02.949 sons of God means. And I'm going to give you 00:07:02.949 --> 00:07:08.250 all the reasons why that is. And so the thing 00:07:08.250 --> 00:07:11.629 that I would say is most people hold to that 00:07:11.629 --> 00:07:16.170 interpretation of Genesis six, not because it's 00:07:16.170 --> 00:07:20.629 biblical and is the most systematic. They hold 00:07:20.629 --> 00:07:23.670 to it really out of discomfort because they're 00:07:23.670 --> 00:07:26.089 like, no, that just, that seems too kooky. That 00:07:26.089 --> 00:07:30.139 seems to much like Greek pantheon gods and all 00:07:30.139 --> 00:07:33.720 this stuff. And it's like, well, there's something 00:07:33.720 --> 00:07:38.199 to all that. And so one of the reason that we 00:07:38.199 --> 00:07:41.240 explain it the way that we do is because the 00:07:41.240 --> 00:07:45.180 text on its own feels like it's just too strange. 00:07:46.339 --> 00:07:48.139 And Genesis six is one of those passages that 00:07:48.139 --> 00:07:51.160 tend to be sanitized a lot. And we try to smooth 00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:54.759 it out and we try to make it safe. And we turn 00:07:54.759 --> 00:07:56.860 it into a moral lesson about dating the wrong 00:07:56.860 --> 00:07:59.459 people when that's not at all what it is. And 00:07:59.459 --> 00:08:02.300 honestly, it fractures the scriptures completely 00:08:02.300 --> 00:08:07.220 because the seeds that we find out about in Genesis 00:08:07.220 --> 00:08:11.139 three, when God talks about the seed, the seed 00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:15.579 of Eve and the seed of the serpent would be at 00:08:15.579 --> 00:08:21.439 odds. This comes down to it. And so. you fracture 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:24.120 the scriptures and you actually take portions 00:08:24.120 --> 00:08:27.779 of it out and you mess up a lot of what is actually 00:08:27.779 --> 00:08:31.579 happening to make the scriptures holistic. And 00:08:31.579 --> 00:08:35.240 so Genesis six isn't about intermarriage, it's 00:08:35.240 --> 00:08:41.139 not about marrying someone who's not a Christian 00:08:41.139 --> 00:08:47.789 or for their sake, like a Jew. Someone or a godly 00:08:47.789 --> 00:08:50.090 line like that's not what it is at all, but it's 00:08:50.090 --> 00:08:53.850 actually about an invasion. Yes, I said an invasion 00:08:53.850 --> 00:08:59.230 because on Mount Hermon. You have these angels 00:08:59.230 --> 00:09:04.590 who rebel. Actual angels. They rebel against 00:09:04.590 --> 00:09:08.750 God. And they take and they go where they make 00:09:08.750 --> 00:09:13.799 a pact and they see the daughters of men. And 00:09:13.799 --> 00:09:15.080 they're like, you know what, we're going to create 00:09:15.080 --> 00:09:18.679 our own seed. And what they're trying to do is 00:09:18.679 --> 00:09:24.000 circumvent Jesus coming, because they knew that 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:26.460 that God would have a seed. And so they're trying 00:09:26.460 --> 00:09:29.419 to circumvent that by creating their own seed. 00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:32.659 And I already can hear the pushback. I will get 00:09:32.659 --> 00:09:36.299 to all of that, but let me start here. OK, so 00:09:36.299 --> 00:09:42.159 let's talk about why Genesis six is angels creating. 00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:46.980 cohabitating with humans, human women and creating 00:09:46.980 --> 00:09:53.360 the Nephilim. And so we first have to look at 00:09:53.360 --> 00:09:57.059 the actual text. And so the meaning of B 'nei 00:09:57.059 --> 00:10:02.019 Ha Elohim, which that phrase itself, B 'nei Ha 00:10:02.019 --> 00:10:07.799 Elohim means that's Hebrew for sons of God. So 00:10:07.799 --> 00:10:10.639 throughout all of the Old Testament, that phrase 00:10:10.639 --> 00:10:14.570 is used consistently. You see it in Job and it 00:10:14.570 --> 00:10:18.029 always refers to divine beings or members of 00:10:18.029 --> 00:10:22.850 a heavenly host. It doesn't refer to. Godly people 00:10:22.850 --> 00:10:27.009 or the the line of Seth, it just doesn't. And 00:10:27.009 --> 00:10:30.409 so there is no clear place in the Hebrew Bible 00:10:30.409 --> 00:10:34.070 where sons of God refers to human beings. Let 00:10:34.070 --> 00:10:36.149 alone the specific line of Seth, it just it's 00:10:36.149 --> 00:10:40.070 not there in all of scripture. it always refers 00:10:40.070 --> 00:10:44.450 to. You can look at Psalm 82. You can look at 00:10:44.450 --> 00:10:48.529 Job, like I said, everywhere it is. It's always 00:10:48.529 --> 00:10:53.330 been a hot Elohim. Which refers to heavenly host, 00:10:53.889 --> 00:10:58.730 not humans. And so the sethite view ask us to 00:10:58.730 --> 00:11:02.029 accept a meaning of the scripture itself that 00:11:02.029 --> 00:11:05.549 it never uses. And that's a problem. We cannot 00:11:05.549 --> 00:11:09.059 look at scripture and go. Well, this makes me 00:11:09.059 --> 00:11:11.840 feel uncomfortable or this is weird. And so therefore 00:11:11.840 --> 00:11:15.559 it must be this. And it's only this at this one 00:11:15.559 --> 00:11:17.559 time and all the other places it refers to heavenly 00:11:17.559 --> 00:11:20.100 house. We can't do that. We have to be consistent 00:11:20.100 --> 00:11:24.139 in our interpretation. So that's the first thing. 00:11:24.259 --> 00:11:26.740 So Bneiha Elohim, what that means and where it's 00:11:26.740 --> 00:11:28.379 at in scripture. So that's the first thing. Here's 00:11:28.379 --> 00:11:32.980 the second thing. Now we have to look at the 00:11:32.980 --> 00:11:36.080 structure of the text. OK, so like I told you, 00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:38.000 I originally was looking at it in context, OK, 00:11:38.220 --> 00:11:39.659 genealogies, blah, blah, blah. And then all of 00:11:39.659 --> 00:11:43.220 a sudden it feels like Genesis six comes out 00:11:43.220 --> 00:11:44.879 of nowhere. And it's like, what the what in the 00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:48.100 world is this? Right. But we have to dig into 00:11:48.100 --> 00:11:50.899 the into where we're at in Genesis six and says, 00:11:50.899 --> 00:11:52.360 now let's look at the structure of the text. 00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:58.559 OK, you've got sons of God. Contrasted with the 00:11:58.559 --> 00:12:02.220 daughters of Adam or the daughters of men, humanity, 00:12:02.740 --> 00:12:06.799 OK? So if the author wanted to describe two human 00:12:06.799 --> 00:12:09.539 groups, he had the language to do it because 00:12:09.539 --> 00:12:12.580 he it's right there. He could have just said 00:12:12.580 --> 00:12:16.379 the daughters of Cain. He doesn't do that. He 00:12:16.379 --> 00:12:22.419 could have also just said. Ungodly. I mean, it's 00:12:22.419 --> 00:12:25.860 all like he has he has the vocabulary to do so. 00:12:25.879 --> 00:12:29.379 Why would he use Baneha Elohim, sons of God? 00:12:30.600 --> 00:12:33.480 He doesn't do that, he doesn't say. daughters 00:12:33.480 --> 00:12:36.500 of Cain or the ungodly, the daughters of the 00:12:36.500 --> 00:12:38.840 ungodly, whatever. He doesn't do that. Instead, 00:12:38.940 --> 00:12:42.480 he contrasts when it reads naturally as divine 00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:46.299 beings with human women. That's just the plain 00:12:46.299 --> 00:12:50.279 reading of the text. Next, then you've got the 00:12:50.279 --> 00:12:53.559 Nephilim problem. OK, so then when you hit the 00:12:53.559 --> 00:12:56.019 whole thing of the Nephilim were on the earth 00:12:56.019 --> 00:13:00.070 in those days, right? This is where the Sethi 00:13:00.070 --> 00:13:01.870 view really breaks down and the person that asked 00:13:01.870 --> 00:13:03.889 a question even said, like, I don't know what 00:13:03.889 --> 00:13:07.129 to do with the Nephilim then. Yes, because the 00:13:07.129 --> 00:13:10.370 Nephilim are a special breed that comes out of 00:13:10.370 --> 00:13:17.549 nowhere. OK, God didn't make them so. Here's 00:13:17.549 --> 00:13:20.909 the question. Why would the union of two groups 00:13:20.909 --> 00:13:26.049 of humans produce something abnormal in a whole 00:13:26.049 --> 00:13:32.200 new race of people? People, Christians marry 00:13:32.200 --> 00:13:36.299 non -Christians or Christians will have sex with 00:13:36.299 --> 00:13:38.519 non -Christians. It still happens today. It's 00:13:38.519 --> 00:13:42.419 happened all throughout time. And we're not seeing 00:13:42.419 --> 00:13:45.399 giants being born. We're not seeing people with 00:13:45.399 --> 00:13:51.480 six fingers and six toes be born. And so this 00:13:51.480 --> 00:13:53.539 is where it breaks down. So when the text says 00:13:53.539 --> 00:13:55.840 that they cause them Nephilim, it calls them 00:13:55.840 --> 00:13:59.720 gibberoam or gibberum. which just means mighty 00:13:59.720 --> 00:14:05.480 men or men of renown. What happens when you marry 00:14:05.480 --> 00:14:07.879 a believer and a nonbeliever, you don't create 00:14:07.879 --> 00:14:11.600 a super legendary figure that is incredibly strong, 00:14:11.799 --> 00:14:15.679 incredibly large, right? I remember I had a professor. 00:14:17.559 --> 00:14:20.100 When I was asking, this is this is back when 00:14:20.100 --> 00:14:23.899 I was at a charismatic university and he was 00:14:23.899 --> 00:14:26.590 over apologetics and I said. uh, what do we do 00:14:26.590 --> 00:14:29.490 with giants and all this stuff? And he's like, 00:14:29.490 --> 00:14:31.330 we still have giants today. And I'm like, we 00:14:31.330 --> 00:14:33.909 do. And he goes, yeah, like they're called the 00:14:33.909 --> 00:14:37.529 MBA. And it's like, what? No, man, like these, 00:14:37.669 --> 00:14:41.509 like these people seem bigger than what we see 00:14:41.509 --> 00:14:47.110 today. Um, and they are because there are actual 00:14:47.110 --> 00:14:51.710 tombs and things that we have found, uh, that, 00:14:52.149 --> 00:14:54.070 I mean, even in, even in Genesis, where it talks 00:14:54.070 --> 00:14:58.730 about Og, Right. And Moses kills Og and or is 00:14:58.730 --> 00:15:02.610 it Abraham? Abraham or Moses, I can't remember 00:15:02.610 --> 00:15:05.870 right now, but they kill Og. Og is a giant. He 00:15:05.870 --> 00:15:09.230 is a king of giants. And it talks about his bed 00:15:09.230 --> 00:15:13.190 being 20 feet long. We know of tombs that are 00:15:13.190 --> 00:15:17.090 14, 15, 16 feet long like this. This isn't just 00:15:17.090 --> 00:15:20.169 about NBA players. OK, this is about huge people 00:15:20.169 --> 00:15:24.919 with huge strength. And so it it. to get the 00:15:24.919 --> 00:15:27.759 Nephilim, you have to have some sort of supernatural 00:15:27.759 --> 00:15:34.759 or I should say unnatural blending of lines. 00:15:35.580 --> 00:15:40.200 OK, so that's the next thing of why I hold to 00:15:40.200 --> 00:15:41.659 that. So here's here's another one. Let's talk 00:15:41.659 --> 00:15:44.259 about the New Testament confirmation. And I'm 00:15:44.259 --> 00:15:46.659 going to get to the pushback of what about angels 00:15:46.659 --> 00:15:48.940 can't have sex. OK, I'm going to get to that. 00:15:49.820 --> 00:15:53.559 But the New Testament doesn't ignore. this view 00:15:53.559 --> 00:15:58.500 either. So 2 Peter, it talks about how these, 00:15:58.720 --> 00:16:01.120 there were specific angels that sinned and were 00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:04.620 cast into Tartarus. Why would they be cast into 00:16:04.620 --> 00:16:09.179 Tartarus and already put to judgment? And they 00:16:09.179 --> 00:16:11.240 will face another, the second judgment, but they've 00:16:11.240 --> 00:16:14.460 already been cast. And why would Jesus go to 00:16:14.460 --> 00:16:18.700 hell and preach? Like, who's he talking to? Well, 00:16:19.539 --> 00:16:24.740 seems like these angels Again, Mount Hermon, 00:16:24.940 --> 00:16:29.360 why would they have taken an oath together to 00:16:29.360 --> 00:16:33.799 commit this sin against God? Why would it only 00:16:33.799 --> 00:16:38.720 be these angels sent to Tartarus? What have they 00:16:38.720 --> 00:16:43.740 had done? And Jude, I'm gonna read Jude. So Jude, 00:16:44.299 --> 00:16:46.799 verse six, oh man, I just lost my place, here 00:16:46.799 --> 00:16:51.340 we go. And Jude says this in verse six. And the 00:16:51.340 --> 00:16:54.039 angels who did not stay within their own position 00:16:54.039 --> 00:16:58.179 of authority, but left their proper dwelling, 00:16:59.019 --> 00:17:01.919 he has kept an eternal change under gloomy darkness 00:17:01.919 --> 00:17:05.079 until the judgment of the great day. And then 00:17:05.079 --> 00:17:08.180 don't miss the next verse. Just as Sodom and 00:17:08.180 --> 00:17:11.920 Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise 00:17:11.920 --> 00:17:15.339 indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural 00:17:15.339 --> 00:17:20.289 desire, serve as an example. by undergoing a 00:17:20.289 --> 00:17:23.130 punishment of eternal fire. Did you catch the 00:17:23.130 --> 00:17:26.930 very next verse? So Jude says that these angels 00:17:26.930 --> 00:17:29.690 left their proper dwelling and then he immediately 00:17:29.690 --> 00:17:33.289 connects it to sexual immorality. That connection 00:17:33.289 --> 00:17:36.289 isn't just random. Like it's there for a purpose. 00:17:37.069 --> 00:17:38.970 And so these authors aren't inventing something 00:17:38.970 --> 00:17:43.150 new. They're actually drawing from a shared understanding 00:17:43.150 --> 00:17:46.920 that is rooted in Genesis six. It's not a breakdown 00:17:46.920 --> 00:17:49.759 of human genealogy. It's a supernatural rebellion. 00:17:50.480 --> 00:17:55.619 That's what this is. And so then we've got to 00:17:55.619 --> 00:17:57.900 we've got to do this. OK, so if we have the sethite 00:17:57.900 --> 00:18:01.000 view, if we hold the sethite view. All right. 00:18:01.819 --> 00:18:06.700 Why the flood then? The flood doesn't like. If 00:18:06.700 --> 00:18:10.859 we just have intermarriage. Between an ungodly 00:18:10.859 --> 00:18:15.859 and godly person. The flood does not match. It 00:18:15.859 --> 00:18:19.720 just doesn't. So if we think about the flood 00:18:19.720 --> 00:18:23.059 and the Sethite view, the cause is intermarriage, 00:18:23.240 --> 00:18:26.480 right? But does that really justify the destruction 00:18:26.480 --> 00:18:30.220 of all flesh? When it says that they left 00:18:43.400 --> 00:18:46.200 their They went with it. Let me make sure I get 00:18:46.200 --> 00:18:49.440 it right. They left there. They did not stay 00:18:49.440 --> 00:18:51.960 within their own position of authority, but left 00:18:51.960 --> 00:18:57.599 their proper dwelling. And then they they. They 00:18:57.599 --> 00:19:04.799 take on these women. OK. So. It would make sense 00:19:04.799 --> 00:19:07.980 that you have a flood that is more than just 00:19:07.980 --> 00:19:12.680 a moral failure. In Matthew 00:20:12.039 --> 00:20:17.630 22 verse 30, it says that angels Angels are spirits. 00:20:17.750 --> 00:20:19.509 That's what we say. Angels are spirits. They 00:20:19.509 --> 00:20:22.250 don't have bodies. And Jesus and Matthew says 00:20:22.250 --> 00:20:26.390 that they don't marry. Well, yeah, exactly. It 00:20:26.390 --> 00:20:27.690 says they don't marry. It doesn't say that they 00:20:27.690 --> 00:20:30.269 can't have sex. So I want you to notice Jesus 00:20:30.269 --> 00:20:34.470 doesn't say angels are incapable. He just says 00:20:34.470 --> 00:20:38.690 they don't marry. That's not about their inability 00:20:38.690 --> 00:20:43.250 to do that. It's more about a role. They don't 00:20:43.250 --> 00:20:47.160 marry. They don't they don't take unions together 00:20:47.160 --> 00:20:50.220 to procreate. They don't do that. They don't 00:20:50.220 --> 00:20:55.980 need to. An angel is a role. Okay, well, hold on. Let's 00:21:58.940 --> 00:22:01.160 talk about the physical nature of spiritual beings. 00:22:02.720 --> 00:22:04.480 Here's something that we tend to miss, which 00:22:04.480 --> 00:22:07.440 is why I said this week why I believe that demons 00:22:07.440 --> 00:22:10.859 are disembodied spirits of Nephilim. not of fallen 00:22:10.859 --> 00:22:16.740 angels. Okay? In scripture, when spiritual beings 00:22:16.740 --> 00:22:22.380 appear, they are physical. In Genesis 18, they 00:22:22.380 --> 00:22:27.259 eat. In Genesis 19, the men of Sodom want to 00:22:27.259 --> 00:22:30.240 sleep with them. And there's a whole thing I 00:22:30.240 --> 00:22:33.819 can go down with that on why they want to. But 00:22:33.819 --> 00:22:37.019 there's no confusion about what they are. They 00:22:37.019 --> 00:22:39.779 see them as physical. The Bible doesn't present 00:22:39.779 --> 00:22:43.240 spiritual beings as intangible clouds. Even Jesus, 00:22:43.279 --> 00:22:46.000 when his resurrected body is physical, he eats. 00:22:46.279 --> 00:22:51.720 They touch him. They can feel him. They can interact 00:22:51.720 --> 00:22:54.980 with the physical world. So the idea of them 00:22:54.980 --> 00:22:57.759 taking on a physical form is not foreign to the 00:22:57.759 --> 00:23:02.160 text of Genesis 6. It's only foreign to us because 00:23:02.160 --> 00:23:05.940 it feels weird, right? At the end of the day, 00:23:08.059 --> 00:23:11.220 the objection often comes because we're trying 00:23:11.220 --> 00:23:15.140 to force a modern category onto an ancient worldview. 00:23:16.559 --> 00:23:20.579 So we hear spirit and assume non -material, but 00:23:20.579 --> 00:23:23.680 the scripture doesn't operate that way. If God 00:23:23.680 --> 00:23:26.579 can take on flesh, then clearly the line between 00:23:26.579 --> 00:23:30.119 spiritual and physical is not as rigid as we 00:23:30.119 --> 00:23:34.349 tend to think that it is. Okay, like they're 00:23:34.349 --> 00:23:38.190 not a mist. And so the issue in Genesis six, 00:23:38.349 --> 00:23:40.769 isn't whether it was possible, the issue is that 00:23:40.769 --> 00:23:44.349 it was forbidden. And so when you begin to see 00:23:44.349 --> 00:23:47.250 that begins to, the scriptures begin to unfold 00:23:47.250 --> 00:23:49.650 a whole lot more. So when we talk about the authority 00:23:49.650 --> 00:23:52.410 of Jesus and what he has given to us, it begins 00:23:52.410 --> 00:23:54.210 to make a whole lot more sense when he says all 00:23:54.210 --> 00:23:56.250 authority in heaven and on earth has been given 00:23:56.250 --> 00:24:00.130 to me and I now give it to you. Like that, that 00:24:00.130 --> 00:24:05.450 is the crux. Follow scripture. And so here's 00:24:05.450 --> 00:24:08.369 the bottom line. The Sethite view doesn't arise 00:24:08.369 --> 00:24:12.529 naturally from the text. But Genesis 00:24:53.799 --> 00:24:57.670 six isn't trying to be comfortable for us. It's 00:24:57.670 --> 00:24:59.950 showing us a world where rebellion isn't just 00:24:59.950 --> 00:25:02.450 human, it's cosmic. It's something different. 00:25:02.569 --> 00:25:06.890 It's out of this world. And if we flatten that, 00:25:07.369 --> 00:25:09.250 we might be missing out on something that the 00:25:09.250 --> 00:25:11.130 original authors fully expected us to see. Yeah, because again, 00:27:45.440 --> 00:27:48.039 he was my professor. He's just an incredible 00:27:48.039 --> 00:27:50.859 man who loved the Lord, loved Jesus, always pointed 00:27:50.859 --> 00:27:53.519 us to Christ. Very biblical, always pointed us 00:27:53.519 --> 00:27:57.160 to the Bible. And I just got the chance to interact 00:27:57.160 --> 00:27:59.599 with him personally.
