And so this is one of 00:01:37.209 --> 00:01:39.510 the wildest scenes in the New Testament to me. 00:01:39.890 --> 00:01:43.969 So I love it because there's so much going on 00:01:43.969 --> 00:01:47.569 and. Yeah, I'm just really pumped about it. So 00:01:47.569 --> 00:01:50.230 I'm going to I'm going to read from Mark five. 00:01:50.919 --> 00:01:53.879 And then I'll begin to unpack it. So here's what 00:01:53.879 --> 00:01:55.799 it says. And I'm reading from the New King James 00:01:55.799 --> 00:01:58.019 version. So it might be a little bit different 00:01:58.019 --> 00:02:00.359 than what you may have if you're going to follow 00:02:00.359 --> 00:02:04.879 along. Then they came to the other side, they 00:02:04.879 --> 00:02:07.180 being Jesus and the disciples, came to the other 00:02:07.180 --> 00:02:10.460 side of the sea, to the country of the Gedarians. 00:02:11.199 --> 00:02:14.199 And when he came, had come out of the boat, him 00:02:14.199 --> 00:02:20.539 being Jesus, immediately they were met. They 00:02:20.539 --> 00:02:24.479 were met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean 00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:28.539 spirit who had his dwelling among the tombs. 00:02:28.539 --> 00:02:32.340 So he's in a cemetery and no one could bind him 00:02:32.340 --> 00:02:37.520 not even with chains because he had often been 00:02:37.520 --> 00:02:39.879 bound with shackles and chains and the chains 00:02:39.879 --> 00:02:42.360 had been pulled apart by him and the shackles 00:02:42.360 --> 00:02:46.080 broken in pieces. Neither could anyone tame him 00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:49.909 and always night and day. He was in the mountains 00:02:49.909 --> 00:02:53.210 and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself 00:02:53.210 --> 00:03:00.810 with stones." Now, the strength of this man is 00:03:00.810 --> 00:03:04.909 important because of what I'm going to dive into 00:03:04.909 --> 00:03:08.509 in the first point about what demons are. But 00:03:08.509 --> 00:03:11.169 I'll go into that in a little bit. When he saw 00:03:11.169 --> 00:03:15.110 Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped him. That's 00:03:15.110 --> 00:03:18.620 important. He cried out with a loud voice and 00:03:18.620 --> 00:03:22.139 said, what have I to do with you, Jesus, son 00:03:22.139 --> 00:03:26.159 of the Most High God? I implore you by God that 00:03:26.159 --> 00:03:29.599 you do not torment me. For he said to him, come 00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:32.800 out of the man, unclean spirit. Then he asked 00:03:32.800 --> 00:03:35.819 him, what is your name? And he answered saying, 00:03:36.039 --> 00:03:40.159 my name is Legion, for we are many. Also, he 00:03:40.159 --> 00:03:43.180 begged him earnestly that he would not send them 00:03:43.180 --> 00:03:46.020 out of the country. Another thing that I can't 00:03:46.020 --> 00:03:48.780 go into, but is also really neat when you get 00:03:48.780 --> 00:03:52.439 into demonology. Demonology being the study of 00:03:52.439 --> 00:03:56.099 demons. Now a large herd of swine was feeding 00:03:56.099 --> 00:03:59.580 there near the mountains. So all the demons begged 00:03:59.580 --> 00:04:02.360 him saying, send us into the swine that we may 00:04:02.360 --> 00:04:06.060 enter them. And at once Jesus gave them permission. 00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:08.819 Then the unclean spirits went out and entered 00:04:08.819 --> 00:04:14.080 the swine. There were about 2000. Okay. And the 00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:16.939 herd ran violently down the steep place into 00:04:16.939 --> 00:04:19.420 the sea and drowned in the sea. And it's like, 00:04:19.420 --> 00:04:21.079 Whoa, that's weird. Like, what's up with that? 00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:24.680 So those who fed the swine fled and they told 00:04:24.680 --> 00:04:26.779 it in the city and they told about it in the 00:04:26.779 --> 00:04:29.879 city and in the country. And they went out to 00:04:29.879 --> 00:04:33.459 see what had happened. Then they came to Jesus 00:04:33.459 --> 00:04:36.500 and saw that the one who had been demon possessed 00:04:36.500 --> 00:04:41.420 and the Legion sitting and had the Legion sitting 00:04:42.550 --> 00:04:44.370 clothed and in his right mind because he was 00:04:44.370 --> 00:04:48.009 naked and they were afraid and those who saw 00:04:48.009 --> 00:04:50.889 it told them how it happened to him and who had 00:04:50.889 --> 00:04:55.290 been demon -possessed and about the swine then 00:04:55.290 --> 00:04:57.810 they began to plead with him to depart from their 00:04:57.810 --> 00:05:00.990 region and when he got into the boat he who had 00:05:00.990 --> 00:05:03.709 been demon -possessed begged them begged him 00:05:03.709 --> 00:05:06.810 Jesus that he might be with him however Jesus 00:05:06.810 --> 00:05:09.069 did not permit him but said to him go home to 00:05:09.069 --> 00:05:11.740 your friends and tell them What great things 00:05:11.740 --> 00:05:14.220 the Lord has done for you and how he has had 00:05:14.220 --> 00:05:18.319 compassion on you And he departed and began to 00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:22.120 proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done 00:05:22.120 --> 00:05:25.620 for him and all marveled That was brutal to read 00:05:25.620 --> 00:05:27.860 from the New King James. I apologize. That's 00:05:27.860 --> 00:05:30.079 it's a study Bible I have and I'm not used to 00:05:30.079 --> 00:05:33.160 reading from it and so it gets a little janky 00:05:33.160 --> 00:05:37.120 for me All right, so much to unpack so much to 00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:38.839 say so let's go ahead and get started. I've got 00:05:38.910 --> 00:05:41.069 Six or seven points that I'm going to make. All 00:05:41.069 --> 00:05:44.610 right. First one being this demons need a body 00:05:44.610 --> 00:05:47.009 to dwell in. That's why they leave and they beg 00:05:47.009 --> 00:05:52.129 to go into the pigs. OK, so Jesus permits it. 00:05:52.970 --> 00:05:55.009 So why do they even ask to go into the pigs? 00:05:55.250 --> 00:05:58.310 All right, so so here's this. So demons in the 00:05:58.310 --> 00:06:01.470 Old Testament and Second Temple Judaism understood 00:06:01.470 --> 00:06:04.410 that demons were disembodied spirits. What does 00:06:04.410 --> 00:06:09.250 that mean? OK. It means that they are spirits. 00:06:10.410 --> 00:06:13.110 All right. They're kind of like ghosts, if you 00:06:13.110 --> 00:06:16.769 will. They're not fallen angels. That's important 00:06:16.769 --> 00:06:18.850 for you to know. Fallen angels are different. 00:06:19.069 --> 00:06:22.750 They are not demons. They are lingering spirits 00:06:22.750 --> 00:06:25.709 of the Nephilim that were destroyed in the flood. 00:06:25.810 --> 00:06:28.149 Who are the Nephilim? The Nephilim are, and I 00:06:28.149 --> 00:06:30.089 can't go into a whole lot of that now, but the 00:06:30.089 --> 00:06:34.120 Nephilim are, they were the offspring of when 00:06:34.120 --> 00:06:38.220 the sons of God, the fallen angels, looked upon 00:06:38.220 --> 00:06:39.759 the daughters of men. You can read about this 00:06:39.759 --> 00:06:45.420 in Genesis six and had relations with them and 00:06:45.420 --> 00:06:47.779 thus created the Nephilim. The Nephilim were 00:06:47.779 --> 00:06:50.420 huge giants. That's where we get Goliath from 00:06:50.420 --> 00:06:52.980 and things like that. They were massive giants. 00:06:53.560 --> 00:06:56.560 And a lot of the reason why God sent the flood, 00:06:56.620 --> 00:07:00.319 because they were these crazy half breeds. They're 00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:04.420 half divine, half human. And that's where we 00:07:04.420 --> 00:07:06.579 get a lot of the stories of the Titans like Hercules 00:07:06.579 --> 00:07:09.300 and a lot of that stuff. I'm not going to go 00:07:09.300 --> 00:07:11.279 into all that, but just know that's one of my 00:07:11.279 --> 00:07:12.699 favorite things to talk about if you ever want 00:07:12.699 --> 00:07:17.079 to talk about it. But anyway, that's important 00:07:17.079 --> 00:07:18.980 to know. So when they were destroyed in the flood, 00:07:19.220 --> 00:07:22.339 their physical bodies, their spirits remained 00:07:22.339 --> 00:07:26.470 as lingering spirits. OK. And so demons seek 00:07:26.470 --> 00:07:30.029 embodiment. They seek to torture us as human 00:07:30.029 --> 00:07:32.410 beings made in the image of God because they 00:07:32.410 --> 00:07:36.370 are not. They want a physical host with which 00:07:36.370 --> 00:07:38.970 to torment, okay? And so that's why they cling 00:07:38.970 --> 00:07:42.269 to this man. And when they're confronted by Jesus, 00:07:42.350 --> 00:07:45.509 they ask for another physical vessel, just any 00:07:45.509 --> 00:07:49.569 vessel. It can be an animal, it can be a person, 00:07:49.689 --> 00:07:52.490 but they just want any vessel so that... would 00:07:52.490 --> 00:07:55.069 be the pigs. They see the pigs and because they 00:07:55.069 --> 00:07:56.689 knew that Jesus was not going to allow them to 00:07:56.689 --> 00:07:59.810 go into another person because Jesus is about 00:07:59.810 --> 00:08:03.250 bringing freedom. OK, from captives. And that's 00:08:03.250 --> 00:08:05.529 part of this. And so here's the second part. 00:08:05.810 --> 00:08:09.269 The demons know exactly who Jesus is. All right. 00:08:09.350 --> 00:08:10.670 Well, you like, well, yeah, because they're demons. 00:08:10.769 --> 00:08:12.129 They know everything. No, they don't. I'm going 00:08:12.129 --> 00:08:13.529 to get into that in a little bit. They don't 00:08:13.529 --> 00:08:16.350 know everything. How do they know who Jesus is? 00:08:16.350 --> 00:08:22.250 OK, well, there are many theologians. And I take 00:08:22.250 --> 00:08:26.269 to this myself, I believe where Jesus was baptized 00:08:26.269 --> 00:08:31.370 would have been right there where the demons, 00:08:31.529 --> 00:08:34.629 the pigs run into the sea. And so the demons 00:08:34.629 --> 00:08:36.950 being in that country would have seen Jesus be 00:08:36.950 --> 00:08:40.009 baptized, would have seen the Holy Spirit descending 00:08:40.009 --> 00:08:44.350 upon Jesus and the voice of God saying, this 00:08:44.350 --> 00:08:47.139 is my son in whom I'm all pleased. And so they 00:08:47.139 --> 00:08:50.500 would have known who he was. They know he's divine. 00:08:50.820 --> 00:08:54.100 Okay. And they know of a permanent judgment that 00:08:54.100 --> 00:08:56.879 is coming because of him. Okay. They know, they 00:08:56.879 --> 00:08:58.919 know there's a permanent judgment coming period, 00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:04.419 but they know of the prophecies. And so they 00:09:04.419 --> 00:09:06.759 know that it's, it's, he's the reason. Okay. 00:09:06.799 --> 00:09:08.580 And so they're terrified, the demons, they're 00:09:08.580 --> 00:09:10.139 terrified at this moment that Jesus will send 00:09:10.139 --> 00:09:11.840 them to their final destruction, their final 00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:14.909 judgment in hell. And this is why they beg for 00:09:14.909 --> 00:09:16.970 an alternative. They want to go into some other 00:09:16.970 --> 00:09:19.590 place, but they don't want to be sent out of 00:09:19.590 --> 00:09:23.149 the region. They want to be sent into the pigs. 00:09:23.350 --> 00:09:25.570 And so again, the region part I would love to 00:09:25.570 --> 00:09:28.769 go into, but I can't. But even powers of darkness, 00:09:28.830 --> 00:09:31.289 they recognize the authority and the identity 00:09:31.289 --> 00:09:34.409 of Christ before many humans do. As a matter 00:09:34.409 --> 00:09:35.830 of fact, I mean, we're going to see that in just 00:09:35.830 --> 00:09:38.029 a second. We see that when they beg him to leave, 00:09:38.570 --> 00:09:43.259 which you read about in other passages. as well. 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:45.179 And so here's the third point. So the presence 00:09:45.179 --> 00:09:48.000 of the pigs tells us something very important 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:53.519 for us today. One, it tells us that it's Gentile 00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:55.840 territory. What does that mean? Well, we are 00:09:55.840 --> 00:09:59.879 Gentiles. We are not Jewish by lineage and by 00:09:59.879 --> 00:10:04.509 heritage. And so we are Gentiles. And so. Jews 00:10:04.509 --> 00:10:06.649 had nothing to do with pigs because they were 00:10:06.649 --> 00:10:09.549 considered unclean. So they wouldn't have used 00:10:09.549 --> 00:10:11.250 them for business. They wouldn't have been using 00:10:11.250 --> 00:10:14.289 them to eat. And so this tells us they were pigs, 00:10:14.750 --> 00:10:18.970 that this place was a Gentile region. So the 00:10:18.970 --> 00:10:21.110 Gentiles, this tells us that there's Gentile 00:10:21.110 --> 00:10:23.490 region. This is Gentile land. OK, so Jews don't 00:10:23.490 --> 00:10:25.750 raise pigs. As I said, they don't eat pigs. They 00:10:25.750 --> 00:10:29.029 don't touch pigs. And so they didn't own pigs. 00:10:29.289 --> 00:10:32.090 So this story and what is happening in this region 00:10:32.090 --> 00:10:36.710 is Gentiles and it's and this is a foreshadowing, 00:10:37.269 --> 00:10:39.490 which brings to my next point, a foreshadowing 00:10:39.490 --> 00:10:42.549 of Christ's mission to the Gentiles as well. 00:10:42.570 --> 00:10:46.490 So like Jesus didn't just come to redeem the 00:10:46.490 --> 00:10:48.769 people of Israel, the Jews, he came to redeem 00:10:48.769 --> 00:10:51.610 all of mankind. And this foreshadows that because 00:10:51.610 --> 00:10:54.049 this is a powerful scene, a preview of the mission 00:10:54.049 --> 00:10:58.129 of Jesus breaking out beyond Israel. And so Jesus 00:10:58.129 --> 00:11:01.200 isn't only freeing Israelites from bondage. He 00:11:01.200 --> 00:11:04.059 is freeing everyone. And so he comes for the 00:11:04.059 --> 00:11:06.080 Gentiles too. And that's important that you see 00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:12.019 that in this. And so, which brings me to my next 00:11:12.019 --> 00:11:15.440 point, which is demons don't know everything, 00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:18.639 only God does. And so again, I'm going back to 00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:23.720 the pigs here. It's fascinating because demons 00:11:23.720 --> 00:11:25.720 are intelligent. Like, don't get me wrong. They, 00:11:25.720 --> 00:11:29.440 they, they are intelligent. But they're not omniscient. 00:11:29.519 --> 00:11:31.879 Omniscient is a theological term for all knowing. 00:11:32.299 --> 00:11:35.379 And so they didn't foresee what happened next. 00:11:36.740 --> 00:11:40.700 And what would that be? That would be the moment 00:11:40.700 --> 00:11:43.299 they enter the pigs. Remember, they begged not 00:11:43.299 --> 00:11:46.220 to be in that final judgment. And so they enter 00:11:46.220 --> 00:11:50.059 into the pigs, but then the pigs rush down a 00:11:50.059 --> 00:11:53.259 cliff and they drown in a water. And in so doing 00:11:53.259 --> 00:11:56.259 so, the demons run literally straight into the 00:11:56.259 --> 00:11:59.500 very judgment they're trying to escape. Now you'd 00:11:59.500 --> 00:12:03.820 be like, why? How do you know that? It has to 00:12:03.820 --> 00:12:06.379 do with the water. OK, and it has to do with 00:12:06.379 --> 00:12:08.919 the study of Sheol and where Sheol is and water 00:12:08.919 --> 00:12:10.480 and all that, which, again, I can't get into, 00:12:11.179 --> 00:12:13.580 but just know that it brought them. They're no 00:12:13.580 --> 00:12:19.960 longer able to to be in something. And so therefore, 00:12:20.159 --> 00:12:24.580 they're then. brought into the judgment of Sheol. 00:12:25.519 --> 00:12:28.919 Uh, and so Jesus allows their request to go into 00:12:28.919 --> 00:12:32.620 the pigs because he knows that destruction is 00:12:32.620 --> 00:12:35.480 coming. And remember what I said, he would not 00:12:35.480 --> 00:12:39.320 have allowed them to go into another person to 00:12:39.320 --> 00:12:41.360 torment those people. Cause Jesus comes to bring 00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:44.080 freedom. All right. So that's why he's like, 00:12:44.080 --> 00:12:46.019 okay, pigs, that's fine. Cause I also know where 00:12:46.019 --> 00:12:48.120 those pigs are going to go. Those pigs were like, 00:12:48.120 --> 00:12:50.080 yeah, this isn't right. This isn't normal. And 00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:55.509 they run headlong into the water. And so this 00:12:55.509 --> 00:12:58.669 moment exposes the limits of demonic knowledge 00:12:58.669 --> 00:13:03.009 and the sovereignty of Christ over all spiritual 00:13:03.009 --> 00:13:05.970 powers, which I think is really awesome. And 00:13:05.970 --> 00:13:09.309 so hopefully so do you. Now, let's let's continue 00:13:09.309 --> 00:13:11.669 to think about this pig thing. So it says in 00:13:11.669 --> 00:13:15.090 Mark that there were two thousand pigs, two thousand 00:13:15.090 --> 00:13:17.029 pigs. So think about that. There's two. They 00:13:17.029 --> 00:13:19.970 said they're a legion for they are many. There's 00:13:19.970 --> 00:13:23.549 two thousand demons, at least inside of this 00:13:23.549 --> 00:13:28.169 man. That's terrifying. And again, I told you 00:13:28.169 --> 00:13:30.529 to look at the strength of this man. What did 00:13:30.529 --> 00:13:33.350 I tell you? Nephilim were they were giants, right? 00:13:33.690 --> 00:13:36.870 So it tells you the strength of so then you've 00:13:36.870 --> 00:13:40.169 got two thousand at least these demons. So now 00:13:40.169 --> 00:13:42.429 you're getting an idea of how strong they are. 00:13:43.090 --> 00:13:46.769 So, but why, why does it tell us 2000 pigs? Like 00:13:46.769 --> 00:13:48.570 why that detail? And that detail isn't in the 00:13:48.570 --> 00:13:50.190 other accounts, but it's important. They, the 00:13:50.190 --> 00:13:53.190 others say there are many pigs. 2000 though is 00:13:53.190 --> 00:13:56.450 important because in modern day time, okay, this 00:13:56.450 --> 00:13:59.970 is somebody's business. So in modern day time, 00:14:00.210 --> 00:14:03.309 all right, that would equate to about a half 00:14:03.309 --> 00:14:07.029 a million dollars of somebody's business and 00:14:07.029 --> 00:14:11.049 it's now gone. And so why does that matter? This 00:14:11.049 --> 00:14:13.330 is why it matters. Remember they, They beg him 00:14:13.330 --> 00:14:16.789 to leave. So this isn't a hobby farm. This is 00:14:16.789 --> 00:14:19.669 a massive commercial operation. This is someone's 00:14:19.669 --> 00:14:21.830 livelihood. All right. So when the pigs die, 00:14:21.929 --> 00:14:24.669 the townspeople, they don't rejoice that the 00:14:24.669 --> 00:14:27.970 demonized man is free. This man who has terrorized 00:14:27.970 --> 00:14:32.330 them and lived in a cemetery and in a mountain 00:14:32.330 --> 00:14:36.289 terrorizing the region. They don't care about 00:14:36.289 --> 00:14:39.429 that. They don't celebrate the power of God. 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:43.679 They actually focus on the financial loss of 00:14:43.679 --> 00:14:47.659 it all. And so they actually beg Jesus to leave. 00:14:47.700 --> 00:14:50.519 And this is a sobering moment. Why? Because they 00:14:50.519 --> 00:14:53.299 choose monetary comfort. They chose money over 00:14:53.299 --> 00:14:56.639 spiritual freedom. They'd rather have their pigs 00:14:56.639 --> 00:14:59.360 than to have Jesus. And so the question is for 00:14:59.360 --> 00:15:03.259 you and me, do you choose monetary gain over 00:15:03.259 --> 00:15:08.590 Jesus? Do you choose idolatry over Jesus? It's 00:15:08.590 --> 00:15:09.970 just something to think about. And then the last 00:15:09.970 --> 00:15:12.929 one is this, something that you should really 00:15:12.929 --> 00:15:16.169 celebrate. And that is that the man was restored. 00:15:16.230 --> 00:15:20.529 He got his humanity back. And so the man who 00:15:20.529 --> 00:15:23.429 was once naked, who was raging, who was violent 00:15:23.429 --> 00:15:26.809 and isolated is now described as clothed, right, 00:15:27.389 --> 00:15:31.090 in his right mind and sitting at the feet of 00:15:31.090 --> 00:15:33.990 Jesus. He's forever changed. So he gets his humanity 00:15:33.990 --> 00:15:36.029 back. He gets his dignity back and he gets his 00:15:36.029 --> 00:15:39.879 identity back. And so this is what Jesus does. 00:15:39.899 --> 00:15:43.259 He restores people spiritually, emotionally, 00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:47.500 mentally, and socially. And the man becomes the 00:15:47.500 --> 00:15:50.899 first missionary to the Decapolis, a Gentile 00:15:50.899 --> 00:15:54.159 region, declaring what Jesus had done for him. 00:15:54.860 --> 00:15:58.340 So with all that being said, why did the demons 00:15:58.340 --> 00:16:01.220 go into the pigs? Because demons seek a body. 00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:06.200 They feared judgment because they were in a Gentile 00:16:06.200 --> 00:16:09.929 territory. All right. because Jesus is signaling 00:16:09.929 --> 00:16:12.289 of his coming salvation for the whole world. 00:16:13.230 --> 00:16:15.769 It's showing that demons don't know everything 00:16:15.769 --> 00:16:20.610 and that Jesus is sovereign and over them. Okay. 00:16:20.750 --> 00:16:23.429 And because the townspeople, they value money 00:16:23.429 --> 00:16:25.409 over deliverance. So these are all the points 00:16:25.409 --> 00:16:28.070 I want you to remember. And because in the end, 00:16:28.070 --> 00:16:33.009 Jesus shows his heart.
