And I got it this 00:00:44.810 --> 00:00:46.670 morning because I shared about our trick or treat 00:00:46.670 --> 00:00:48.869 that's on Friday, which if you live in the O 00:00:48.869 --> 00:00:51.869 'Neill area, would love to see you there on Halloween 00:00:51.869 --> 00:00:54.609 night, five to seven p .m. I just come in and 00:00:54.609 --> 00:00:56.350 get some candy and let us love on you a little 00:00:56.350 --> 00:01:00.710 bit. But my friend Bruce. message me on Facebook, 00:01:00.789 --> 00:01:02.590 and this is what he said. He said, I saw your 00:01:02.590 --> 00:01:05.230 post on the trunk or treat. Would you give me 00:01:05.230 --> 00:01:07.370 a quick thought on what you think about Christians 00:01:07.370 --> 00:01:09.969 and Halloween? Been really trying to discern 00:01:09.969 --> 00:01:14.810 about it this year. And so, Bruce, it's a great 00:01:14.810 --> 00:01:17.750 question, and honestly one my wife and I, we 00:01:17.750 --> 00:01:20.430 wrestled with a lot when we became parents. because 00:01:20.430 --> 00:01:22.549 when we both grew up, we grew up in the eighties 00:01:22.549 --> 00:01:24.230 and the nineties when, you know, like the whole 00:01:24.230 --> 00:01:26.129 big scare of razor blades and your peanut butter 00:01:26.129 --> 00:01:30.730 cups was a thing. I mean, not necessarily just 00:01:30.730 --> 00:01:33.310 in peanut butter cups. It was an all candy, supposedly. 00:01:34.549 --> 00:01:40.069 And our parents, you know, they they were Christians 00:01:40.069 --> 00:01:42.890 and, you know, they wouldn't they had strong 00:01:42.890 --> 00:01:44.930 convictions about like we couldn't watch the 00:01:44.930 --> 00:01:47.430 Simpsons and we couldn't watch the Smurfs and. 00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:49.819 So we definitely weren't going to be dressing 00:01:49.819 --> 00:01:52.219 up, knocking on doors and collecting candy, even 00:01:52.219 --> 00:01:54.099 if we're dressed up as, you know, I don't know, 00:01:54.739 --> 00:01:57.640 a baseball player or strawberry shortcake. Uh, 00:01:57.700 --> 00:01:59.700 it didn't matter. It was all off limits because 00:01:59.700 --> 00:02:03.180 for them that was participating in evil. And 00:02:03.180 --> 00:02:05.159 in the words of my own mother, she would say 00:02:05.159 --> 00:02:09.520 it is, it is allowing evil to happen. It is allowing 00:02:09.520 --> 00:02:13.840 you to be a part of something you are, um, joining 00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:18.759 in on it. And so. When we became parents, Tracy 00:02:18.759 --> 00:02:22.080 and I, we began to think, like, do we feel that 00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:24.060 way? Like, is this something, like, should we 00:02:24.060 --> 00:02:26.520 feel this way? Is that the proper way to look 00:02:26.520 --> 00:02:30.020 at Halloween and, you know, your kids participating 00:02:30.020 --> 00:02:33.000 and all that? So I was like, all right, well, 00:02:33.479 --> 00:02:36.919 are we actually celebrating evil by participating 00:02:36.919 --> 00:02:38.400 in Halloween? So we begin to pray about it and 00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:39.759 read the scriptures. And this is essentially 00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:43.139 where we come down on it. And so let's talk about 00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:46.800 if it is celebrating evil by participating in 00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:49.300 Halloween and how we should approach Halloween. 00:02:50.020 --> 00:02:52.379 And so I want to give a disclaimer real quick 00:02:52.379 --> 00:02:55.379 before we dive in. This is not a full blown historical 00:02:55.379 --> 00:02:59.620 deep dive or a theological thesis. OK, like this 00:02:59.620 --> 00:03:01.900 is just a short episode to give you some history 00:03:01.900 --> 00:03:04.780 and some scripture and hopefully a little bit 00:03:04.780 --> 00:03:07.280 of clarity on it. OK, so here's a little bit 00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:10.379 of history. So some people say that Halloween 00:03:10.379 --> 00:03:15.169 began as a Christian holiday. Others say it came 00:03:15.169 --> 00:03:19.009 from a pagan festival called Samhain, which is 00:03:19.009 --> 00:03:23.129 spelled S -A -M -H -A -I -N. So it looks like 00:03:23.129 --> 00:03:26.009 Samhain, but it's pronounced Celtic and it's 00:03:26.009 --> 00:03:30.090 pronounced Samhain. And so which is it? And the 00:03:30.090 --> 00:03:32.889 truth is, so when I say which is it, is it a 00:03:32.889 --> 00:03:38.629 Christian holiday that was ultimately observed 00:03:38.629 --> 00:03:41.770 by the Catholic Church? Was it a pagan holiday? 00:03:41.849 --> 00:03:43.930 Which came first? Was it a pagan holiday that 00:03:43.930 --> 00:03:47.250 Christians ultimately took over? Which is it? 00:03:47.430 --> 00:03:49.729 And so the truth is we don't actually know for 00:03:49.729 --> 00:03:53.849 sure. Now, there's evidence of ancient harvest 00:03:53.849 --> 00:03:57.729 festivals, but historian Ronald Hutton points 00:03:57.729 --> 00:04:00.689 out that a lot of people repeat about Samhain 00:04:00.689 --> 00:04:03.930 is actually what they actually repeat actually 00:04:03.930 --> 00:04:06.990 comes from later sources, even from a book from 00:04:06.990 --> 00:04:10.599 the 1800s. And so that book is what everyone 00:04:10.599 --> 00:04:13.280 essentially kind of repeats about Samhain and 00:04:13.280 --> 00:04:16.399 Celtic practices and just all this stuff. And 00:04:16.399 --> 00:04:20.300 so even the encyclopedia Britannica also quotes 00:04:20.300 --> 00:04:22.959 from this book and he's like, there's actually 00:04:22.959 --> 00:04:27.360 not a lot of literature written, not a lot of 00:04:27.360 --> 00:04:30.660 good sources that actually can tell us. And so 00:04:30.660 --> 00:04:33.019 Samhain was an ancient Celtic festival marking 00:04:33.019 --> 00:04:37.949 the end of harvest in the start of winter. And 00:04:37.949 --> 00:04:40.170 people would light bonfires and they left food 00:04:40.170 --> 00:04:44.449 out for ancestors and they wore disguises To 00:04:44.449 --> 00:04:47.889 confuse evil spirits. Okay, so that sounds pretty 00:04:47.889 --> 00:04:49.829 familiar, right? Like it should it should like 00:04:49.829 --> 00:04:53.649 what like that sounds very very vaguely familiar 00:04:53.649 --> 00:04:56.990 like Halloween, right? And so now let's fast 00:04:56.990 --> 00:05:00.629 forward several centuries and the Christian calendar 00:05:00.629 --> 00:05:04.930 was October 31st became All Hallows Eve the night 00:05:04.930 --> 00:05:08.759 before All Saints Day And it was a time to remember 00:05:08.759 --> 00:05:12.399 and honor the saints of God. Um, this is again, 00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:14.439 this is a Catholic, this is a Catholic thing. 00:05:14.439 --> 00:05:17.839 And so if, if you are a Protestant, um, we don't 00:05:17.839 --> 00:05:20.379 really do this whole thing of like celebrating 00:05:20.379 --> 00:05:23.300 the saints or praying to saints because we're 00:05:23.300 --> 00:05:26.319 all saints. And when, once you're absent from 00:05:26.319 --> 00:05:28.639 the body, as Paul says, you are present with 00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:34.120 Jesus. And so those saints don't care about what 00:05:34.120 --> 00:05:36.540 you're doing. Okay. Sorry to my Catholic friends. 00:05:36.829 --> 00:05:39.750 but they don't. Like, they are in the full presence 00:05:39.750 --> 00:05:43.970 and glory of Jesus. They don't really care. So, 00:05:44.129 --> 00:05:46.110 getting off my soapbox for a moment. So, but 00:05:46.110 --> 00:05:49.410 they would light candles, they visited graves, 00:05:49.550 --> 00:05:53.329 and they would pray for the departed. Now, that 00:05:53.329 --> 00:05:58.790 is very traditional, like, Catholic view of All 00:05:58.790 --> 00:06:02.370 Saints, All Hallows Eve for All Saints Day. So, 00:06:02.370 --> 00:06:06.050 the word Halloween simply comes from All Hallows 00:06:06.139 --> 00:06:09.339 evening, the evening before All Hallows Day. 00:06:09.759 --> 00:06:15.639 And so, did the two merge? Maybe in small ways, 00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:17.959 but history isn't clear, and that's what Ronald 00:06:17.959 --> 00:06:22.120 Hutton in his academic article points out. And 00:06:22.120 --> 00:06:23.899 if you want to read that, I'll actually link 00:06:23.899 --> 00:06:27.019 it in the show notes. So, I can hear you, all 00:06:27.019 --> 00:06:29.019 right? I can hear you already. Like, okay, but 00:06:29.019 --> 00:06:31.180 should we celebrate it? Should Christians celebrate 00:06:31.180 --> 00:06:34.220 it? All right, here's my honest answer. That's 00:06:34.220 --> 00:06:37.439 between you and the Lord, all right? Uh, Paul 00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:40.139 deals with this kind of thing in first Corinthians 00:06:40.139 --> 00:06:44.540 eight. And I know you're like, Logan, that's 00:06:44.540 --> 00:06:46.620 between me and the Lord. Like that's a very Switzerland 00:06:46.620 --> 00:06:50.240 thing to say. I, I, I, it feels like a very fence 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:51.800 writer thing to say. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know, 00:06:51.800 --> 00:06:54.839 but it's important. And the reason why I'm, I'm, 00:06:54.839 --> 00:06:56.600 it's important that I say it like that because 00:06:56.600 --> 00:06:58.920 I think that Paul deals with this same issue 00:06:58.920 --> 00:07:01.240 in first Corinthians eight. And that's why I'm 00:07:01.240 --> 00:07:04.180 going there. In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul is dealing 00:07:04.180 --> 00:07:06.139 with the believers. They were arguing over whether 00:07:06.139 --> 00:07:09.259 to eat meat that was sacrificed to idols. And 00:07:09.259 --> 00:07:12.560 so he basically says, an idol is nothing. OK. 00:07:12.839 --> 00:07:15.399 But if your conscience won't let you eat it, 00:07:15.620 --> 00:07:18.899 then don't and don't judge the one who does. 00:07:19.399 --> 00:07:23.220 And so that's kind of the same idea. All right. 00:07:23.639 --> 00:07:27.720 If you feel convicted not to participate in Halloween, 00:07:28.379 --> 00:07:33.230 then don't. And that's okay. But if another Christian 00:07:33.230 --> 00:07:37.329 does participate in a clean, fun way, they're 00:07:37.329 --> 00:07:41.629 not sinning. Hear me? They're not sinning. And 00:07:41.629 --> 00:07:46.889 that's okay if they participate. So, where do 00:07:46.889 --> 00:07:49.110 we draw the line, though? Because I can hear 00:07:49.110 --> 00:07:50.930 the person that's like, we should not be celebrating 00:07:50.930 --> 00:07:54.110 Halloween. I don't think you're celebrating by 00:07:54.110 --> 00:07:58.399 participating, okay? you're not necessarily celebrating. 00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:01.980 In my mind, celebrating is the people that, well, 00:08:01.980 --> 00:08:07.399 I'll get into that. And so let me be clear on 00:08:07.399 --> 00:08:10.259 where we draw the line as Christians, okay? Where 00:08:10.259 --> 00:08:12.980 we should draw the line is when we celebrate 00:08:12.980 --> 00:08:20.920 darkness, when we are putting out tombstones 00:08:20.920 --> 00:08:24.889 and fake dead bodies and And murdered bodies 00:08:24.889 --> 00:08:28.009 hanging from trees and it gets really gory and 00:08:28.009 --> 00:08:30.250 there's blood and there's guts and there's witches 00:08:30.250 --> 00:08:32.990 and witches brew and all this and all this crazy 00:08:32.990 --> 00:08:37.409 stuff. That is very, very the scriptures are 00:08:37.409 --> 00:08:39.370 very, very clear on where we should stand on 00:08:39.370 --> 00:08:41.970 this stuff, because they the scriptures are very 00:08:41.970 --> 00:08:45.009 clear on it. The scriptures are tell us like 00:08:45.009 --> 00:08:47.720 we don't mess around with necromancy. What is 00:08:47.720 --> 00:08:50.080 necromancy? Necromancy is trying to communicate 00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:52.159 with the dead, trying to summon up spirits from 00:08:52.159 --> 00:08:54.820 the dead. We don't mess around with Ouija boards, 00:08:55.519 --> 00:08:58.019 seances. We don't participate. Anything that 00:08:58.019 --> 00:09:01.779 tries to communicate with the dead, it's not 00:09:01.779 --> 00:09:06.120 harmless fun. This is all demonic and dangerous, 00:09:06.120 --> 00:09:09.460 and you can see it in Scripture. Saul visits 00:09:09.460 --> 00:09:13.620 with the witch of Endor in 1 Samuel 28. And Paul 00:09:13.620 --> 00:09:16.519 is casting, and by the way, before I go into 00:09:16.519 --> 00:09:20.080 about Paul talking and casting out demons, with 00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:24.500 the witch of Endor, with Saul, the witch herself, 00:09:24.840 --> 00:09:27.620 so Paul goes in order because he's scared out 00:09:27.620 --> 00:09:29.279 of his mind, he's needing to know what to do, 00:09:29.340 --> 00:09:33.320 and Samuel the prophet is now dead. So he doesn't 00:09:33.320 --> 00:09:35.519 wait on the Lord, he runs to the witch of Endor 00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:39.539 who conjures up the spirit of Samuel. It's the 00:09:39.539 --> 00:09:43.490 actual spirit of Samuel, by the way. And you 00:09:43.490 --> 00:09:45.169 could be like, well, how do you know that? Well, 00:09:45.190 --> 00:09:49.129 because she's terrified. The witch is terrified. 00:09:49.929 --> 00:09:53.610 Why does that matter? Because one, she typically 00:09:53.610 --> 00:09:57.649 typically obviously deals with the summoning 00:09:57.649 --> 00:09:59.929 of a certain demon and that demon typically is 00:09:59.929 --> 00:10:03.690 the one speaking to her. But when actually Samuel 00:10:03.690 --> 00:10:09.190 shows up, she's terrified. And so we don't mess 00:10:09.190 --> 00:10:12.419 around with that stuff. You may think, oh, I'm 00:10:12.419 --> 00:10:14.759 talking to Uncle Charlie's ghost. No, you're 00:10:14.759 --> 00:10:18.539 not. You're talking to a demon. You may be like, 00:10:18.539 --> 00:10:21.120 oh, Ouija boards. No, you're not. No, it's not. 00:10:21.139 --> 00:10:23.860 You're opening yourselves up. You are talking 00:10:23.860 --> 00:10:29.299 with things and spirits that hate you. They do. 00:10:29.480 --> 00:10:31.399 Why do they hate you? In the book of John, we read that 00:12:15.289 --> 00:12:17.649 Jesus took on flesh and he came into the world. 00:12:18.429 --> 00:12:21.750 And this is in John 1. And he did it not to hide 00:12:21.750 --> 00:12:25.649 from darkness, but to redeem it. And I love the 00:12:25.649 --> 00:12:27.750 message translation's paraphrase of this. Now, 00:12:27.750 --> 00:12:29.950 I can't stand the message translation as a whole, 00:12:29.950 --> 00:12:34.779 but I think that this sentence, this verse, absolutely 00:12:34.779 --> 00:12:36.879 nailed because it says, this is a paraphrase, 00:12:37.159 --> 00:12:40.159 he moved into the neighborhood. So Jesus came 00:12:40.159 --> 00:12:43.720 and he moved into the neighborhood. So how do 00:12:43.720 --> 00:12:46.179 I think Jesus would approach Halloween? I don't 00:12:46.179 --> 00:12:47.779 think he'd turn off his porch lights and pretend 00:12:47.779 --> 00:12:50.580 he wasn't home. That's what Tracy and I used 00:12:50.580 --> 00:12:52.700 to do. We used to turn off all our lights and 00:12:52.700 --> 00:12:54.240 pretend we weren't home and we'd get all our 00:12:54.240 --> 00:12:57.700 kids up in our bedroom upstairs and watch a movie 00:12:57.700 --> 00:13:00.299 with all the lights off and just act like nobody's 00:13:00.299 --> 00:13:04.039 home. But I started getting very convicted about 00:13:04.039 --> 00:13:06.139 that, and I was like, Jesus wouldn't do this. 00:13:06.480 --> 00:13:07.639 So how do I think He would do it? I think He 00:13:07.639 --> 00:13:10.840 would actually turn His porch lights on. I think 00:13:10.840 --> 00:13:13.059 He would have all of His lights on. I think He 00:13:13.059 --> 00:13:15.159 would hand out full -size candy bars because 00:13:15.159 --> 00:13:16.779 that would be awesome, and that's what He does. 00:13:16.779 --> 00:13:19.980 He's awesome. And I think He would love on the 00:13:19.980 --> 00:13:21.879 children and the parents, the families that come 00:13:21.879 --> 00:13:24.779 to His door. I think He would see it as an opportunity 00:13:24.779 --> 00:13:28.940 for the gospel, not as something to ignore or 00:13:28.940 --> 00:13:32.240 pretend like is not happening. Because when else 00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:34.960 do your neighbors come actually knocking on your 00:13:34.960 --> 00:13:37.860 door? I would guess typically not very often 00:13:37.860 --> 00:13:40.720 And especially if you live in O 'Neill in the 00:13:40.720 --> 00:13:43.940 surrounding areas Most of you guys many of you 00:13:43.940 --> 00:13:46.000 guys are farmers and ranchers and they're your 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:49.220 nearest neighbors a long way away But this night 00:13:49.220 --> 00:13:53.220 is a night of opportunity incredible opportunity 00:13:53.220 --> 00:13:57.179 To show kindness to show the love of Jesus and 00:13:57.179 --> 00:13:59.440 to meet people where they are just like Jesus 00:13:59.440 --> 00:14:02.460 did That's why I think he would do that. And 00:14:02.460 --> 00:14:05.620 so, let me close all this out, okay? So here's 00:14:05.620 --> 00:14:07.559 what I think you should do. If you're in this 00:14:07.559 --> 00:14:09.220 kind of in -between and not sure what to do about 00:14:09.220 --> 00:14:15.620 it, I think you should pray. Seek the Lord. If 00:14:15.620 --> 00:14:18.399 you feel convicted to avoid Halloween, that's 00:14:18.399 --> 00:14:22.240 fine. There's no judgment. Maybe you have a background. 00:14:22.440 --> 00:14:25.759 Maybe you were saved and redeemed out of witchcraft, 00:14:26.139 --> 00:14:30.120 paganism, whatever it may be, and the Lord and 00:14:30.120 --> 00:14:31.940 the Lord, like you don't want, like God took 00:14:31.940 --> 00:14:34.879 you out of that, you don't even want to smell 00:14:34.879 --> 00:14:40.600 like candy and anything that would resemble your 00:14:40.600 --> 00:14:42.559 life you were redeemed and saved out of, that 00:14:42.559 --> 00:14:44.860 is totally okay.
