We're going to look 00:01:30.170 --> 00:01:36.689 at four things in this text. The sacrifice David 00:01:36.689 --> 00:01:41.239 will give to God. Then we'll consider this sacrifice 00:01:41.239 --> 00:01:48.219 in relation to repentance. Thirdly, in relation 00:01:48.219 --> 00:01:54.640 to faith. And lastly, in relation to restoration 00:01:54.640 --> 00:02:01.120 and the forgiveness of sins. Beginning with the 00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:05.950 sacrifice that David will offer to God. He begins 00:02:05.950 --> 00:02:09.129 and he clarifies for us, first of all, what he 00:02:09.129 --> 00:02:16.610 will not offer to God. We read in verse 16, For 00:02:16.610 --> 00:02:22.169 you do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I 00:02:22.169 --> 00:02:26.310 would give it. You are not pleased with burnt 00:02:26.310 --> 00:02:31.509 offering. What is it that David will not give 00:02:31.509 --> 00:02:35.939 to God? What is it that David cannot? Give to 00:02:35.939 --> 00:02:41.780 God. It's sacrifices and burnt offerings. These 00:02:41.780 --> 00:02:44.900 two words, it's talking about sacrifices for 00:02:44.900 --> 00:02:47.759 sin that was instituted because of the Mosaic 00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:52.020 law, but also thank offerings. David is saying 00:02:52.020 --> 00:02:54.740 that he won't give these to God because God doesn't 00:02:54.740 --> 00:02:58.939 in himself delight or take pleasure in these 00:02:58.939 --> 00:03:02.340 things. Now, there's a few reasons that David 00:03:02.340 --> 00:03:05.310 won't. Give these to God and he will not be giving 00:03:05.310 --> 00:03:09.569 these to God. He knows that God won't receive 00:03:09.569 --> 00:03:14.310 them. He knows that God won't accept that as 00:03:14.310 --> 00:03:17.530 satisfactory. David knows that sacrifice in and 00:03:17.530 --> 00:03:21.770 of itself has no intrinsic value or worth that 00:03:21.770 --> 00:03:28.689 makes the worshiper acceptable with God. If an 00:03:28.689 --> 00:03:31.889 Israelite were to give a sacrificial offering, 00:03:32.699 --> 00:03:35.479 and they were to bring it to the priest, and 00:03:35.479 --> 00:03:37.479 they were to go through the ceremonies, but their 00:03:37.479 --> 00:03:42.659 heart was unrepentant? But their heart was cold, 00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:45.199 and their heart was cold, and their heart was 00:03:45.199 --> 00:03:47.539 dull, and their heart was distant and removed 00:03:47.539 --> 00:03:51.639 from God? What good would that sacrifice do for 00:03:51.639 --> 00:03:56.539 that worshiper before God? Would God be pleased 00:03:56.539 --> 00:03:59.539 with that sacrifice if the individual's heart 00:03:59.539 --> 00:04:06.219 was still far from God? He would be more than 00:06:36.089 --> 00:06:39.850 happy to offer thousands and thousands of sacrifices 00:06:39.850 --> 00:06:43.029 if that pleased God, if he could, but he can't. 00:06:44.470 --> 00:06:50.709 There were no offerings for David's sins. God 00:06:50.709 --> 00:06:53.930 had appointed no sacrifice to cover adultery 00:06:53.930 --> 00:06:56.110 and to cover murder. You know what was the penalty? 00:06:59.540 --> 00:07:02.040 That's what David should have gotten for his 00:07:02.040 --> 00:07:06.480 sins. But God was gracious to him. He didn't. 00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:10.939 So even if he could offer sacrifices, David couldn't. 00:07:11.040 --> 00:07:14.740 He was incapable of bringing these things to 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:18.420 God. So what is the sacrifice? What is the offering 00:07:18.420 --> 00:07:23.500 that David will give to God? He tells us in verse 00:07:23.500 --> 00:07:30.259 17. This idea of brokenness, this 00:07:56.759 --> 00:07:59.899 word, it carries the idea of being splintered 00:07:59.899 --> 00:08:04.199 or shattered to pieces. It carries the idea of 00:08:04.199 --> 00:08:07.319 a ship going down along the ocean and running 00:08:07.319 --> 00:08:09.819 into land and the front of it shattering into 00:08:09.819 --> 00:08:12.879 a thousand little pieces. And then there's the 00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:16.779 idea of contrition or contrite heart. It carries 00:08:16.779 --> 00:08:19.939 the idea of being crushed or ground down to powder. 00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:24.620 David's saying that God wants his heart, his 00:08:24.620 --> 00:08:29.459 inward contrition, his inward brokenness. What's the inner workings there? 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:43.419 How do the two relate to each other? When we 00:13:43.419 --> 00:13:46.679 consider the context of this, we have to remember 00:13:46.679 --> 00:13:51.799 that this is the final appeal that David is making 00:13:51.799 --> 00:13:56.070 for himself. We find in 18 and 19, he's talking 00:13:56.070 --> 00:14:00.970 about Israel and the nation in general. But this 00:14:00.970 --> 00:14:04.950 is his final culminating appeal with regards 00:14:04.950 --> 00:14:08.190 to true repentance. And we know that David's 00:14:08.190 --> 00:14:10.809 talking about true repentance in Psalm 51, don't 00:14:10.809 --> 00:14:15.909 we? We know he's talking about genuine, true 00:14:15.909 --> 00:14:21.919 repentance because he's restored. Because he's 00:14:21.919 --> 00:14:25.940 forgiven. So if David is still talking about 00:14:25.940 --> 00:14:29.080 genuine, true repentance, and now he's talking 00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:33.299 about brokenness, we must conclude that all true 00:14:33.299 --> 00:14:41.019 repentance always has genuine brokenness and 00:14:41.019 --> 00:14:46.759 mourning that accompanies it. True repentance 00:14:46.759 --> 00:14:54.000 is always from and always carried out in brokenness, 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:59.200 and contrition of heart. People who truly repent 00:14:59.200 --> 00:15:06.159 are people who truly mourn their sin. This helps 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:11.700 us. It helps us answer a few questions. So if your sorrow, your brokenness 00:16:48.570 --> 00:16:53.190 in your heart doesn't lead you to actually forsaking 00:16:53.190 --> 00:16:58.929 sin, then it's not true godly sorrow. But it 00:16:58.929 --> 00:17:06.630 also tells us that all repentance that is offered 00:17:06.630 --> 00:17:14.910 but is devoid of godly sorrow is not true repentance. 00:17:16.559 --> 00:17:21.140 So if you repent and you turn from your sin and 00:17:21.140 --> 00:17:25.980 you look to Christ, for there's no grief over 00:17:25.980 --> 00:17:30.839 your sin. Not considering the implications 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:32.240 of it? Knowing that that's what good Christians 00:18:32.240 --> 00:18:36.559 do, so I repent, I say I'm sorry. That's not 00:18:36.559 --> 00:18:39.460 genuine and true repentance, brothers and sisters. 00:18:41.100 --> 00:18:45.500 Genuine and true repentance always comes from 00:18:45.500 --> 00:18:48.039 a place of mourning and brokenness. This helps us in another way. Have you been broken and grieved? 00:19:31.569 --> 00:19:34.750 And has that grief, that brokenness, driven you 00:19:34.750 --> 00:19:38.369 to forsake sin?
