So accidents happen when dogs 00:04:52.079 --> 00:04:56.399 do not know the rules or they don't have enough 00:04:56.399 --> 00:05:00.300 supervision. We talk about this probably every 00:05:00.300 --> 00:05:02.779 week. But when dogs don't have enough supervision, 00:05:03.079 --> 00:05:06.279 they make their own choices. And crazy enough 00:05:06.279 --> 00:05:10.639 that when dogs make their own choices, oftentimes 00:05:10.639 --> 00:05:13.639 it's not the decision that you would want. So if, faced 00:05:39.290 --> 00:05:42.389 with an obstacle they may just make their own 00:05:42.389 --> 00:05:50.189 decision and go inside so um what can we do we 00:05:50.189 --> 00:05:52.589 can we can do a couple of things so i've got 00:05:52.589 --> 00:05:54.529 a couple of things listed here right we can set 00:05:54.529 --> 00:05:57.410 predictable feeding and potty times we can limit 00:05:57.410 --> 00:06:00.470 the freedom uh until the dog proves that they 00:06:00.470 --> 00:06:03.149 can be reliable and we can use crates and leashes 00:06:03.709 --> 00:06:05.750 to control access in the home so we're going 00:06:05.750 --> 00:06:09.689 to talk through those three things um as we talk 00:06:09.689 --> 00:06:12.709 about this i like to when i break it down for 00:06:12.709 --> 00:06:15.889 a client we talk about this triangle and the 00:06:15.889 --> 00:06:21.610 triangle is the concept of um before we actually 00:06:21.610 --> 00:06:27.069 before we even get to the triangle you must accept 00:06:27.069 --> 00:06:31.959 some level of confinement for your dog as being 00:06:31.959 --> 00:06:37.060 healthy for your dog right if you let a eight 00:06:37.060 --> 00:06:40.720 week old puppy run around your house they will 00:06:40.720 --> 00:06:43.879 for sure make a mess yeah there's no version 00:06:43.879 --> 00:06:47.019 of this that they're just going to know that 00:06:47.019 --> 00:06:49.079 they need to go out and they need to go outside 00:06:49.079 --> 00:06:52.399 in order to do that yeah so we got to teach them 00:06:52.399 --> 00:06:56.060 we have to teach puppies everything that they 00:06:56.060 --> 00:06:58.670 learn Everything that they know, everything that 00:06:58.670 --> 00:07:03.410 they learn has to be taught. So how do we do 00:07:03.410 --> 00:07:09.689 that? Number one, we teach them to be okay with 00:07:09.689 --> 00:07:16.410 going in and relaxing in a crate. Yep. The confinement 00:07:16.410 --> 00:07:20.810 of a crate is not a punishment. The confinement 00:07:20.810 --> 00:07:25.209 of a crate builds structure in the dog's mind. 00:07:26.810 --> 00:07:30.470 It decreases anxiety because you teach a dog 00:07:30.470 --> 00:07:35.069 that this is a safe place. So when everything 00:07:35.069 --> 00:07:39.750 else in the world is going crazy, they know that 00:07:39.750 --> 00:07:43.769 they are safe and they will not be, you know, 00:07:43.769 --> 00:07:47.009 yelled at or punished or hurt or anything will 00:07:47.009 --> 00:07:50.930 happen to them in this crate. And by doing that, 00:07:50.970 --> 00:07:55.310 you create this like foundational security blanket. 00:07:56.329 --> 00:07:59.910 That then you can build off of. Yep. And so what 00:07:59.910 --> 00:08:05.769 we recommend is that we teach a dog to go and 00:08:05.769 --> 00:08:10.230 relax and spend time in a crate. The other reason 00:08:10.230 --> 00:08:12.990 that we use a crate specifically for potty training 00:08:12.990 --> 00:08:18.170 is that if we size the crate appropriately, a 00:08:18.170 --> 00:08:22.250 dog will naturally not want to soil themselves. 00:08:24.790 --> 00:08:27.889 If we put a dog in a great big crate, it's very 00:08:27.889 --> 00:08:30.829 easy for the dog to pee or poop on one side and 00:08:30.829 --> 00:08:36.110 then live on the other. And that is the opposite 00:08:36.110 --> 00:08:38.789 of what we want. So we want to size the crate 00:08:38.789 --> 00:08:46.190 appropriately. The size that we're talking about 00:08:46.190 --> 00:08:49.750 is big enough for the dog to walk in and turn 00:08:49.750 --> 00:08:53.980 around. As well as large enough for the dog to 00:08:53.980 --> 00:08:56.360 sit up all the way without their head touching 00:08:56.360 --> 00:09:00.379 the top. By doing that, you can have a dog that 00:09:00.379 --> 00:09:03.399 can sit very relaxed inside a kennel. They can 00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:05.539 lay down. They can usually lay on their side 00:09:05.539 --> 00:09:08.059 because they were able to go in and turn around. 00:09:08.320 --> 00:09:11.320 So it's appropriate sides for the dog to lay 00:09:11.320 --> 00:09:15.820 down and not touch front or back of the kennel. 00:09:16.379 --> 00:09:20.740 And that's as big as we want it. And if they never get 00:09:47.240 --> 00:09:51.279 forced to build it, and we just let the dog out 00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:55.220 every 30 minutes, it'll take a lot longer for 00:09:55.220 --> 00:10:00.360 them to build that process. So the crate allows 00:10:00.360 --> 00:10:03.960 us to control their movement so that they can't 00:10:03.960 --> 00:10:07.279 just willy -nilly run around the house. But on 00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:10.759 top of that, it helps to give them some structure 00:10:10.759 --> 00:10:14.720 that, hey, you have to hold it in this area. 00:10:14.779 --> 00:10:18.220 Otherwise, you're going to lay in your own excrement. 00:10:20.209 --> 00:10:22.350 What are some other things that go into this 00:10:22.350 --> 00:10:26.570 like triangle? Right. Yeah. And typically 00:10:49.710 --> 00:10:52.230 we're not paying attention because we're doing 00:10:52.230 --> 00:10:55.090 the dishes or we're folding the laundry or something 00:10:55.090 --> 00:10:57.769 like that. So that is one of my favorite ones. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:41.720 Another one is like keeping a log. So it's the same thing with a puppy, right? 00:11:58.360 --> 00:12:00.779 Mark their food times. Mark the times when they 00:12:00.779 --> 00:12:03.159 go to the bathroom. And 100 % puppies are going 00:12:03.159 --> 00:12:04.960 to fall into this rhythm where you can usually 00:12:04.960 --> 00:12:08.659 correlate how long after they eat do they need 00:12:08.659 --> 00:12:12.009 to go to the bathroom. So keeping a log will 00:12:12.009 --> 00:12:14.070 really, really help. And sometimes you can pick 00:12:14.070 --> 00:12:17.710 up on their pattern from that. Crates, leashes, 00:12:17.750 --> 00:12:19.889 you already went over that. But 00:14:07.269 --> 00:14:11.230 let's just say that that's accurate. Every dog 00:14:11.230 --> 00:14:14.350 is going to be a little bit different.
