This was one of the earliest 00:06:21.379 --> 00:06:24.459 legal distinctions of lifelong servitude based 00:06:24.459 --> 00:06:26.600 on race. Wow. And then there's another case, 00:06:26.819 --> 00:06:30.019 John Kaser. Even more explicitly, yes, John Kaser 00:06:30.019 --> 00:06:33.360 in 1655. Kaser was an African man indentured 00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:36.000 to Anthony Johnson, who was himself a free black 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:39.060 landowner. When Kaser claimed his term was up, 00:06:39.180 --> 00:06:41.779 Johnson claimed Kaser was his slave for life. 00:06:41.939 --> 00:06:44.279 And the court sided with Johnson.
