Snowy. for the snow -capped Sierra 00:03:06.300 --> 00:03:08.479 Nevada mountains on the western border. That all changed 00:03:15.460 --> 00:03:18.759 in 1848 with the Mexican -American War. In the mid -19th century, the Mormons established 00:03:34.620 --> 00:03:36.860 their proposed state of desert, which claimed 00:03:36.860 --> 00:03:39.439 a huge chunk of what would become Nevada. Today, it's the 00:03:48.020 --> 00:03:50.479 town of Genoa. And these little settlements were 00:03:50.479 --> 00:03:53.099 absolutely crucial supply points for people heading 00:03:53.099 --> 00:03:55.340 west. And they had a foothold down south, too, 00:03:55.479 --> 00:03:58.650 right? In the Las Vegas Valley. They did. Mormon 00:03:58.650 --> 00:04:01.569 missionaries built a 150 -foot square adobe fort 00:04:01.569 --> 00:04:05.150 there in 1855. It was basically a supply post 00:04:05.150 --> 00:04:07.289 on the route between Salt Lake City and the Pacific. 00:04:07.550 --> 00:04:10.389 So what you're saying is this early history kind 00:04:10.389 --> 00:04:13.050 of infused the state with these cultural influences 00:04:13.050 --> 00:04:17.050 from Utah and even New Mexico. In the food and 00:04:17.050 --> 00:04:19.370 architecture. Exactly. They were the only organized 00:04:19.370 --> 00:04:22.189 groups really capable of building permanent structures 00:04:22.189 --> 00:04:24.750 in such a hostile, remote and arid place. That was that was all about 00:04:30.129 --> 00:04:32.730 geology. That was the game changer. And the rush was so aggressive, the 00:05:14.170 --> 00:05:17.250 state had, what, barely 40 ,000 residents? That's 00:05:17.250 --> 00:05:19.930 way below the usual 60 ,000 Congress required 00:05:19.930 --> 00:05:22.470 for statehood. So why the political desperation? 00:05:22.649 --> 00:05:24.410 It wasn't just about getting Lincoln reelected, 00:05:24.410 --> 00:05:26.389 was it? No, it was bigger than that. But to 00:05:44.759 --> 00:05:46.639 meet the deadline, they had to get the entire 00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:48.839 state constitution to Washington immediately. 00:05:49.379 --> 00:05:51.680 And after a couple of failed attempts to send 00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:53.600 the physical document, they did something just 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:59.240 unprecedented. On October 26, 1864, they telegraphed 00:05:59.240 --> 00:06:01.379 the full text of the Constitution, every single 00:06:01.379 --> 00:06:04.319 word. And the cost. I mean, the sources on this 00:06:04.319 --> 00:06:08.199 are amazing. That one single dispatch cost. $4 00:06:08.199 --> 00:06:13.300 ,303 .27. Which today would be over $86 ,500. 00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:16.600 It was the most expensive single telegraph ever 00:06:16.600 --> 00:06:18.839 sent at that time. A massive financial gamble. 00:06:18.980 --> 00:06:20.639 But it paid off politically. The confirmation 00:06:20.639 --> 00:06:23.319 arrived on October 31st. They expanded eastward in 1866, 00:06:46.540 --> 00:06:49.439 taking more land from Utah. Which includes modern -day Las Vegas, 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:01.800 Clark County. Exactly. And the motivation, according 00:07:01.800 --> 00:07:03.699 to the sources, was another resource discovery. 00:07:04.120 --> 00:07:06.839 Gold was found in that area. So Nevada officials 00:07:06.839 --> 00:07:10.139 argued to Congress, hey, we have a mining infrastructure. 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:12.540 We're better equipped to handle this than Arizona's 00:07:12.540 --> 00:07:15.319 territorial government. And they won. It was 00:07:15.319 --> 00:07:17.339 always about the minerals and the control over 00:07:17.339 --> 00:07:20.339 them. Always. And even though that first silver 00:07:20.339 --> 00:07:23.180 boom faded, a second one kicked off around 1900 00:07:23.180 --> 00:07:26.560 with strikes at Tonopah, then Goldfield and Rhyolite. 00:07:26.759 --> 00:07:28.959 And that boom left behind some really unique 00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:32.759 architectural leftovers. It really did. I mean, 00:07:32.759 --> 00:07:35.579 the extreme conditions forced people to be resourceful. 00:07:35.660 --> 00:07:37.740 You see it in places like Rhyolite, which once 00:07:37.740 --> 00:07:40.060 had 10 ,000 people. And one of the things still 00:07:40.060 --> 00:07:42.439 standing is the Bottle House. The Bottle House, 00:07:42.540 --> 00:07:45.540 right. Built in 1906. Using an estimated 50 ,000 00:07:45.540 --> 00:07:47.860 discarded beer and liquor bottles, all mortared 00:07:47.860 --> 00:07:50.699 together. It's just a wonderful, absurd testament 00:07:50.699 --> 00:07:54.420 to frontier ingenuity and, you know, the lack 00:07:54.420 --> 00:07:56.699 of traditional building materials. So a state 00:07:56.699 --> 00:07:59.439 literally built on telegraph wires, political 00:07:59.439 --> 00:08:03.220 deals, and silver. That rapid expansionist mindset 00:08:03.220 --> 00:08:05.699 really set the stage for its modern identity, 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.699 which, as we're about to see, is about monetizing 00:08:08.699 --> 00:08:11.720 a lot more than just minerals. And that transition 00:08:11.720 --> 00:08:14.139 from monetizing minerals to monetizing sovereignty, 00:08:14.439 --> 00:08:17.399 that is the key to understanding Nevada. Absolutely. Part of a national moral crusade. Exactly. 00:08:41.830 --> 00:08:45.009 But by the early 1930s, the state's economy was 00:08:45.009 --> 00:08:47.629 collapsing. Mining was down. And at the same time, 00:09:29.889 --> 00:09:32.110 Nevada was also enacting the most liberal divorce 00:09:32.110 --> 00:09:35.269 laws in the country. They realized that if they 00:09:35.269 --> 00:09:37.389 shortened the residency requirement down to just 00:09:37.389 --> 00:09:40.570 six weeks, they could create a lucrative divorce 00:09:40.570 --> 00:09:43.889 haven. Wealthy Americans could come for a quick, 00:09:43.950 --> 00:09:46.389 easy end to a marriage, far from the strict laws 00:09:46.389 --> 00:09:48.350 back east. And that created a whole cultural 00:09:48.350 --> 00:09:50.269 ecosystem, didn't it? People would come, set 00:09:50.269 --> 00:09:52.830 up temporary residency, and spend a lot of money. 00:09:52.909 --> 00:09:55.669 Oh, yeah. Specialized businesses popped up. Dude ranches, where wealthy 00:09:58.370 --> 00:10:00.470 Easterners could ride horses while waiting out 00:10:00.470 --> 00:10:03.210 the six weeks. The court eventually said 00:10:13.639 --> 00:10:16.000 that, yes, other states have to recognize a Nevada 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:19.039 divorce, but only if one of the parties had genuinely 00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:21.919 established a legal residency there. Bars, liquor stores, convenience stores, 00:11:18.870 --> 00:11:21.370 supermarkets. They can all sell every type of 00:11:21.370 --> 00:11:24.169 alcohol, two and four or seven. There's no concept 00:11:24.169 --> 00:11:27.049 of a last call in Nevada. It's truly unique. 00:11:27.230 --> 00:11:29.509 But the biggest paradox is in the drug laws. 00:11:29.950 --> 00:11:32.330 You'd think a state that prioritizes personal 00:11:32.330 --> 00:11:34.970 freedom would be progressive here, and they are 00:11:34.970 --> 00:11:37.470 in some ways. They approved medical marijuana 00:11:37.470 --> 00:11:40.990 in 2000, recreational in 2016.
