This is a story about 00:00:28.429 --> 00:00:33.170 when Mary and Martha send the letter to Jesus 00:00:33.170 --> 00:00:37.149 to let him know that their brother Lazarus is 00:00:37.149 --> 00:00:41.750 sick. Anyway, I'll see you on the other side. 00:00:45.490 --> 00:00:47.570 The story that we're going to look at tonight, 00:00:47.689 --> 00:00:51.149 this is some of my favorite time of the year. 00:00:51.189 --> 00:00:55.170 Just my favorite because we're right on the precipice 00:00:55.170 --> 00:00:59.060 of the... easter season these last couple of 00:00:59.060 --> 00:01:02.420 weeks two or three weeks in jesus's life scripturally 00:01:02.420 --> 00:01:07.459 is very very uh interesting to me and so we're 00:01:07.459 --> 00:01:10.579 going kind of from this moment forward we're 00:01:10.579 --> 00:01:16.519 going to kind of uh look chronologically at stories 00:01:16.519 --> 00:01:18.340 that would be consistent with the last part of 00:01:18.340 --> 00:01:21.340 jesus's earthly life so tonight's story comes 00:01:21.340 --> 00:01:26.560 to us from john chapter 11 and uh This would 00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:31.219 have been a couple of weeks before Easter, resurrection, 00:01:31.599 --> 00:01:34.980 those events, that final Passover. It's kind 00:01:34.980 --> 00:01:37.340 of where we are in the story. That's where we 00:01:37.340 --> 00:01:40.680 are tonight. We're going to see that Jesus is 00:01:40.680 --> 00:01:42.120 going to spend quite a bit of time with his friends 00:01:42.120 --> 00:01:47.079 Mary, Martha, and Lazarus over these last few 00:01:47.079 --> 00:01:49.640 weeks of his life. If you come and join us on 00:01:49.640 --> 00:01:51.819 Sunday morning, that will be an additional story 00:01:51.819 --> 00:01:55.299 where we'll actually see. An event that takes 00:01:55.299 --> 00:01:59.260 place with Mary in their home right before the 00:01:59.260 --> 00:02:03.299 end of Jesus' life. And then you'll see this other story 00:02:09.120 --> 00:02:13.139 of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. So tonight's story 00:02:13.139 --> 00:02:16.099 comes to us from John chapter 11. I'm going to 00:02:16.099 --> 00:02:18.419 read a brief story here. Just five verses and 00:02:18.419 --> 00:02:20.599 we'll see if we can apply this to our lives tonight. 00:02:20.699 --> 00:02:24.889 John chapter 11 verse 1 says this. Now a certain 00:02:24.889 --> 00:02:28.710 man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, in the village 00:02:28.710 --> 00:02:34.270 of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who 00:02:34.270 --> 00:02:36.729 anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his 00:02:36.729 --> 00:02:39.569 feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was 00:02:39.569 --> 00:02:42.710 ill. Now, time out. That story hadn't happened 00:02:42.710 --> 00:02:44.750 yet in the story. He thinks you already know 00:02:44.750 --> 00:02:48.340 the story. That story actually happens later. 00:02:48.479 --> 00:02:51.560 So he's assuming, as John writes his gospel account, 00:02:51.759 --> 00:02:54.259 you already know when I talk about Mary, it's 00:02:54.259 --> 00:02:56.819 the one that did the anointing. We're going to 00:02:56.819 --> 00:03:00.020 talk about that on Sunday, the anointing of Jesus 00:03:00.020 --> 00:03:06.180 by Mary. Lord, he whom you love is ill. Now, 00:03:06.180 --> 00:03:08.599 when Jesus heard it, he said, this illness does 00:03:08.599 --> 00:03:11.280 not lead to death. It's for the glory of God, 00:03:11.340 --> 00:03:13.620 so that the Son of God may be glorified through 00:03:13.620 --> 00:03:18.460 it. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and 00:03:18.460 --> 00:03:21.060 Lazarus. That's where I'll stop the reading for 00:03:21.060 --> 00:03:23.520 this evening. Have you ever heard anybody say 00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:26.099 that in the heat of the moment that you end up 00:03:26.099 --> 00:03:28.759 saying stuff that you don't mean? Ever heard 00:03:28.759 --> 00:03:31.259 anybody say that? In the heat of the moment, 00:03:31.379 --> 00:03:34.180 people say things that they just don't mean. 00:03:34.460 --> 00:03:38.520 I fundamentally disagree with that. I think in 00:03:38.520 --> 00:03:40.680 the heat of the moment, you actually say things 00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:44.710 that you do mean. I think when things intensify 00:03:44.710 --> 00:03:47.289 and circumstances get difficult and stressful 00:03:47.289 --> 00:03:50.250 and complicated, I think what you really believe 00:03:50.250 --> 00:03:53.050 about life, or perhaps what you really believe 00:03:53.050 --> 00:03:55.409 about God, what you really believe about yourself, 00:03:55.530 --> 00:03:58.930 somehow just seems to come to the surface and 00:03:58.930 --> 00:04:02.849 oftentimes slips right through our lips. Let's 00:04:02.849 --> 00:04:05.900 be honest. When life gets difficult or challenging, 00:04:06.060 --> 00:04:09.300 when things intensify and situations escalate, 00:04:09.319 --> 00:04:12.360 what ends up happening is what you really believe, 00:04:12.699 --> 00:04:16.199 what you swore you would never say but you think 00:04:16.199 --> 00:04:19.959 about a lot, ends up coming to the surface, does 00:04:19.959 --> 00:04:25.379 it not? And if in fact that's true, then that 00:04:25.379 --> 00:04:27.680 brings us back to these five short verses that 00:04:27.680 --> 00:04:30.920 we read just a moment ago. Because Mary and Martha 00:04:30.920 --> 00:04:34.579 are in the thick of it, right? Mary and Martha 00:04:34.579 --> 00:04:38.319 are in a heated moment, to say the least. Their 00:04:38.319 --> 00:04:40.839 little brother, Lazarus, their beloved little 00:04:40.839 --> 00:04:44.600 brother, is on death's doorstep. He is just hours 00:04:44.600 --> 00:04:48.360 from passing away into eternity. And it becomes 00:04:48.360 --> 00:04:50.720 clear to me that in our portion of Scripture, 00:04:51.019 --> 00:04:54.220 that they have attempted all other avenues to 00:04:54.220 --> 00:04:57.040 save their little brother. And now, these two 00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:00.180 sisters have concluded that there is only one 00:05:00.180 --> 00:05:04.550 answer. And it's a miracle. And there's only 00:05:04.550 --> 00:05:09.149 one miracle worker, and that's God. And they 00:05:09.149 --> 00:05:12.430 need Jesus to come and heal Lazarus. They need 00:05:12.430 --> 00:05:15.610 him to come and save their brother's life. And 00:05:15.610 --> 00:05:18.709 they have this very logical plan. They're going 00:05:18.709 --> 00:05:21.470 to write a note. They're going to put it in a 00:05:21.470 --> 00:05:24.649 runner's hand. Jesus is just several miles down 00:05:24.649 --> 00:05:27.160 the road. They're going to have the runner run 00:05:27.160 --> 00:05:30.420 down those several miles and hand that note to 00:05:30.420 --> 00:05:34.939 Jesus. And upon reading this note, this note 00:05:34.939 --> 00:05:39.420 and its contents will compel God to come down 00:05:39.420 --> 00:05:42.339 the road the several miles and save the little 00:05:42.339 --> 00:05:46.379 brother's life. Now, we are about to discover 00:05:46.379 --> 00:05:49.730 what Mary and Martha believe about God. When 00:05:49.730 --> 00:05:51.870 push comes to shove, when it's a matter of life 00:05:51.870 --> 00:05:54.509 and death, when the heat is on, what Mary and 00:05:54.509 --> 00:05:58.389 Martha really believe about Jesus is about to 00:05:58.389 --> 00:06:02.410 come to the surface. Now keep in mind, Mary and 00:06:02.410 --> 00:06:06.050 Martha and Lazarus are the closest natural family 00:06:06.050 --> 00:06:09.670 that Jesus has on the planet other than his literal 00:06:09.670 --> 00:06:14.990 family. The second to last week in Jesus' life 00:06:14.990 --> 00:06:18.879 is spent exclusively. With Mary and Martha and 00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:22.720 Lazarus. They're close friends with Jesus. Lazarus 00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:27.600 is one of Jesus' dudes. This is his guy. Lazarus 00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:31.639 is one of his sidekicks. Now, have you ever read 00:06:31.639 --> 00:06:35.939 the Bible and you just anticipate you know the 00:06:35.939 --> 00:06:38.819 story and you anticipate what's going to be said 00:06:38.819 --> 00:06:42.339 next? I do that all the time. I've read the Bible 00:06:42.339 --> 00:06:46.550 a few times. And I'm reading this passage and 00:06:46.550 --> 00:06:49.529 I'm reading this story and I'm like, oh yeah, 00:06:49.589 --> 00:06:52.110 yeah, yeah, the note. And they send it and I 00:06:52.110 --> 00:06:55.889 knew in my memory, I knew the note read something 00:06:55.889 --> 00:07:01.490 like, Lord, the one that loves you is ill. And 00:07:01.490 --> 00:07:05.949 I read it and it was the opposite. I misremembered 00:07:05.949 --> 00:07:09.550 that part of the story. I didn't remember it 00:07:09.550 --> 00:07:12.410 the correct way. I remembered it, the one that 00:07:12.410 --> 00:07:15.740 loves you is ill. But that's not what's said. 00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:19.139 Let's take a little bit closer look at the contents 00:07:19.139 --> 00:07:22.500 of the note. First, the length of the note is 00:07:22.500 --> 00:07:25.639 shocking in and of itself. How short is the note? 00:07:25.720 --> 00:07:28.660 If you had one note to save your loved one's 00:07:28.660 --> 00:07:31.259 life, first of all, it's not going to be short. 00:07:31.620 --> 00:07:35.279 If you only had one note to save your loved one's 00:07:35.279 --> 00:07:38.800 life, one note to save my wife's life, I would 00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:41.810 instantly begin writing down her resume. Resume. 00:07:41.850 --> 00:07:44.670 I would start listing out her spiritual statistics. 00:07:44.889 --> 00:07:48.149 Her average time in prayer daily, right? Because 00:07:48.149 --> 00:07:51.029 this is life and death. But listen to what they 00:07:51.029 --> 00:07:56.069 write. Lord, he, the one who you love is sick. 00:07:56.170 --> 00:07:59.370 Say that again. The end. That's the end of the 00:07:59.370 --> 00:08:01.610 story. And I remember reading that and thinking, 00:08:01.769 --> 00:08:07.230 what? Right? This is what Mary and Martha believe. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:13.939 They believe that what will move God most is 00:08:13.939 --> 00:08:19.339 His love for Lazarus, not Lazarus' love for Him. 00:08:20.220 --> 00:08:23.379 And whenever I had got that wrong, it was shocking 00:08:23.379 --> 00:08:25.860 to me, because I started to think about the focus 00:08:25.860 --> 00:08:28.439 of my relationship with God, and it started to 00:08:28.439 --> 00:08:31.680 kind of alarm me, to be quite honest. I started 00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.360 to think, wait, is the focus of the gospel, what 00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:38.370 is the focus of the gospel? Which means the good 00:08:38.370 --> 00:08:41.990 news of Jesus Christ. The good news of what God 00:08:41.990 --> 00:08:45.070 has done for us through His Son. What is the 00:08:45.070 --> 00:08:49.169 focus of the good news? Is it man loving God? 00:08:49.950 --> 00:08:53.950 Or is it God loving man? And I had to come to 00:08:53.950 --> 00:08:57.129 the obvious biblical conclusion that the essence 00:08:57.129 --> 00:09:01.629 of the Gospel is overwhelmingly God loving mankind. 00:09:03.049 --> 00:09:05.409 Now here's a thought. That it could actually 00:09:05.409 --> 00:09:09.029 change your entire outlook on God and life, right? 00:09:09.169 --> 00:09:15.009 Because guess what moves God the most? God. God 00:09:15.009 --> 00:09:18.110 moves God the most. And it dawned on me, you 00:09:18.110 --> 00:09:20.929 know John 3 .16, right? The scripture that Tim 00:09:20.929 --> 00:09:25.230 Tebow wrote? It dawned on me that John 3 .16 00:09:25.230 --> 00:09:29.669 doesn't read like this. For the world so loved, 00:09:29.710 --> 00:09:33.470 or the world so served, or the world so worshipped 00:09:33.470 --> 00:09:36.769 God, Then He gave His only begotten Son. That's 00:09:36.769 --> 00:09:39.870 not how it reads. As if the Gospel story went 00:09:39.870 --> 00:09:42.470 something like, you know, God is in heaven and 00:09:42.470 --> 00:09:45.149 He's walking around on the gold -laden streets. 00:09:45.850 --> 00:09:48.470 And then this dusty, small, little planet known 00:09:48.470 --> 00:09:51.629 as Earth. And on that planet, there is this remnant 00:09:51.629 --> 00:09:55.570 of people who are imploring, begging God because 00:09:55.570 --> 00:09:58.309 of their passion and because of their desire 00:09:58.309 --> 00:10:00.809 and their love and their intrigue. They were 00:10:00.809 --> 00:10:04.029 so enraptured with God that they were saying, 00:10:04.110 --> 00:10:07.470 God, come to us. We love you, please. And God 00:10:07.470 --> 00:10:11.049 paced back and forth on those golden streets 00:10:11.049 --> 00:10:14.009 and He considered their offer. Should I? Should 00:10:14.009 --> 00:10:17.289 I not? I have so much to do up here because I'm 00:10:17.289 --> 00:10:21.309 God, but boy, they're convincing. They sure want 00:10:21.309 --> 00:10:26.570 me down there. Okay, I'll come. That's not the 00:10:26.570 --> 00:10:32.330 gospel. For God so loved the world. And it's 00:10:32.330 --> 00:10:35.269 got the so in front of it. It's not just loved. 00:10:35.470 --> 00:10:39.549 It's so loved. Right? And I think it's fair that 00:10:39.549 --> 00:10:42.269 we could maybe take so loved out and put the 00:10:42.269 --> 00:10:46.000 word obsession. I think that's fair. God was 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:51.600 so obsessed with the world. That's John 3 .16. 00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:55.899 And have you ever considered how ridiculous or 00:10:55.899 --> 00:11:00.139 illogical this, our most famous verse is? For 00:11:00.139 --> 00:11:03.639 God so loved the world, right? Because the world 00:11:03.639 --> 00:11:09.240 means bad system. The world means sinful existence. 00:11:10.220 --> 00:11:16.009 The world means bad people. So John 3 .16 reads 00:11:16.009 --> 00:11:20.409 like this. God was so obsessed with bad people 00:11:20.409 --> 00:11:24.549 that he put on skin and bone and came to the 00:11:24.549 --> 00:11:27.750 earth and died. And listen, because it gets worse. 00:11:28.450 --> 00:11:34.450 For whosoever. I mean, whoever. Right? Excuse 00:11:34.450 --> 00:11:37.210 me. I feel like maybe if you're going to give 00:11:37.210 --> 00:11:41.049 your life for whoever, I mean, look, if I give 00:11:41.049 --> 00:11:43.850 you a car, The next time I see you, you better 00:11:43.850 --> 00:11:47.169 be driving that car, right? Because I want to 00:11:47.169 --> 00:11:50.029 be able to give you something that I know that 00:11:50.029 --> 00:11:52.090 there's an expectation that you'll appreciate 00:11:52.090 --> 00:11:55.350 it. God's 00:12:31.580 --> 00:12:35.559 ways are higher than our ways. How His love is 00:12:35.559 --> 00:12:39.059 higher than our love. God loves bad people. God 00:12:39.059 --> 00:12:42.120 is obsessed with bad people. Even bad people 00:12:42.120 --> 00:12:47.139 who stay bad. God stays in love with them. But 00:12:47.139 --> 00:12:51.100 what is love without choice? Without choice, 00:12:51.240 --> 00:12:53.960 we've lost the definition of love. Because in 00:12:53.960 --> 00:12:57.360 our culture, in our society, forced love is how 00:12:57.360 --> 00:13:01.700 you end up in jail. Right? That's abuse. And 00:13:01.700 --> 00:13:06.840 God's not abusive. He gives us choice. And you 00:13:06.840 --> 00:13:09.279 can either acknowledge the obsession towards 00:13:09.279 --> 00:13:13.779 you, or you can ignore it. It's your choice, 00:13:13.799 --> 00:13:20.419 but God's obsession remains nonetheless. 1 John 00:13:20.419 --> 00:13:26.200 4, verse 10 says this, This is love. For it even 00:13:26.200 --> 00:13:29.240 tells you what love is. It tells you what love 00:13:29.240 --> 00:13:33.100 is not. It says, this is love. Not that you loved 00:13:33.100 --> 00:13:37.500 God because you didn't, but that God loved us. 00:13:38.360 --> 00:13:43.700 God's first. God's the initiator. The Bible is 00:13:43.700 --> 00:13:48.179 about God. And I realized, I have been so busy 00:13:48.179 --> 00:13:51.679 obsessing over my love, I've got this thing out 00:13:51.679 --> 00:13:55.419 of order. And I wondered, have I missed the whole 00:13:55.419 --> 00:13:59.919 focus of everything about being obsessed, rather 00:13:59.919 --> 00:14:02.779 not God's obsession with me, but my obsession 00:14:02.779 --> 00:14:05.539 with my performance and my deeds and my efforts? 00:14:06.399 --> 00:14:10.179 And I end with this, my conclusion. 65 % of your 00:14:10.179 --> 00:14:13.220 audience re -engages upon hearing the word conclusion, 00:14:13.440 --> 00:14:16.399 so I shall conclude with this. Again, this is 00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:20.690 where I'll conclude. Mary and Martha, we've made 00:14:20.690 --> 00:14:23.090 it abundantly clear that they use the word love 00:14:23.090 --> 00:14:27.129 in their note. Lord, the one you love is ill. 00:14:27.429 --> 00:14:32.350 That word love they use there. That word is the 00:14:32.350 --> 00:14:35.690 word that's most often used to refer in the Bible 00:14:35.690 --> 00:14:38.590 when we talk about love. It's what our songs 00:14:38.590 --> 00:14:43.210 are sung about. The word is philio. Philio. Those 00:14:43.210 --> 00:14:46.029 familiar with Greek, philio is the word used 00:14:46.029 --> 00:14:49.690 here by Mary and Martha. Philio is earthly love. 00:14:50.909 --> 00:14:54.110 Philio is how people get married. Philio is how 00:14:54.110 --> 00:14:57.809 people have best friends. Philio is love that 00:14:57.809 --> 00:15:02.669 is based upon reciprocation. Mary and Martha 00:15:02.669 --> 00:15:05.809 write a note to Jesus and they go, the one you 00:15:05.809 --> 00:15:11.649 love and loves you back is sick. Oh, Mary and 00:15:11.649 --> 00:15:16.519 Martha. You think this love is filio? You think 00:15:16.519 --> 00:15:20.080 God filios you? I'm here to tell you God does 00:15:20.080 --> 00:15:23.940 not filio you. He never has and He never will. 00:15:24.620 --> 00:15:27.159 Because God has a love that is exclusively His. 00:15:28.019 --> 00:15:31.940 It flows from His being. The essence of who He 00:15:31.940 --> 00:15:38.460 is is not filio. It's an otherworldly love. It's 00:15:38.460 --> 00:15:41.139 from another realm and dimension. It is from 00:15:41.139 --> 00:15:44.940 His essence, the core of God's existence. God 00:15:44.940 --> 00:15:48.899 does not feel love. God does not merely express 00:15:48.899 --> 00:15:55.340 love. God is love. And God always acts in consistency 00:15:55.340 --> 00:15:59.059 with the contents of His character. God cannot 00:15:59.059 --> 00:16:03.659 deny Himself. But God is not filio. God is agape. 00:16:04.879 --> 00:16:08.600 What is agape? Agape is love that absolutely 00:16:08.600 --> 00:16:13.919 does not need reciprocation whatsoever. It is 00:16:13.919 --> 00:16:17.700 unconditional. It is relentless. I'm not for cats, but I am for hills, 00:16:45.159 --> 00:16:47.820 and I'm for mountains, and I'm for lakes, and 00:16:47.820 --> 00:16:50.740 I'm for oceans. But there is only one being created 00:16:50.740 --> 00:16:53.440 in the image of God. In all of creation, in that 00:16:53.440 --> 00:16:57.340 being, is the human being. And that being is 00:16:57.340 --> 00:17:00.919 the object of God's relentless obsession. He 00:17:00.919 --> 00:17:05.200 will not stop loving you. He cannot. In this 00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:07.980 instance, biblically, we have to understand that 00:17:07.980 --> 00:17:11.920 God can't help himself. How ridiculous is this 00:17:11.920 --> 00:17:14.920 love? How extensive and extraordinary is this 00:17:14.920 --> 00:17:19.579 love? And we, as Christians, we've got to get 00:17:19.579 --> 00:17:24.099 this message out. That if you're bad, God is 00:17:24.099 --> 00:17:27.299 still obsessed with you. He can't help himself. 00:17:27.559 --> 00:17:30.480 You can't shake him. You can run, but you cannot 00:17:30.480 --> 00:17:34.819 hide. God's love remains. And I pray today that 00:17:34.819 --> 00:17:37.240 as we go from this place, from where we are, 00:17:37.339 --> 00:17:39.680 and we get in our cars, and we go about the rest 00:17:39.680 --> 00:17:42.220 of our week, I pray that the preoccupation of 00:17:42.220 --> 00:17:45.519 your mind and your thoughts would not be your 00:17:45.519 --> 00:17:50.839 love, your performance, your success, your weaknesses, 00:17:50.940 --> 00:17:54.539 but you would be preoccupied with God's love. 00:17:54.539 --> 00:17:58.079 extraordinary and extensive and expansive love 00:17:58.079 --> 00:18:05.500 for you. Well, there you have it.
