So are you guys ready? Okay. So the first 00:01:32.930 --> 00:01:34.670 one I want to talk about tonight, I'm calling 00:01:34.670 --> 00:01:38.769 the OG escape plan. This is the story of Moses 00:01:38.769 --> 00:01:41.489 and the great exits. Now, before I actually get 00:01:41.489 --> 00:01:44.969 into the escape, we have to put ourselves there. 00:01:45.250 --> 00:01:48.010 So we have Abraham. We all know Abraham. There's 00:01:48.010 --> 00:01:51.510 Isaac. There's Jacob. Jacob has a son, many sons, 00:01:51.590 --> 00:01:54.620 but one of them's name is Joseph. You may or 00:01:54.620 --> 00:01:56.719 may not know this story, but Joseph gets sold 00:01:56.719 --> 00:02:01.319 into slavery by his brothers. He ends up in Egypt 00:02:01.319 --> 00:02:05.219 and through a series of events ends up in the 00:02:05.219 --> 00:02:07.939 royal household of the Pharaoh and eventually 00:02:07.939 --> 00:02:10.479 ends up second in power of all of Egypt except 00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:15.199 to Pharaoh. Famine in the land of God's people. 00:02:15.280 --> 00:02:18.939 So they come to Egypt looking for food, not knowing 00:02:18.939 --> 00:02:21.860 that Joseph is their brother because they thought 00:02:21.860 --> 00:02:26.590 he was dead. Well, Joseph eventually welcomes 00:02:26.590 --> 00:02:30.590 them back into the family. Then they all move 00:02:30.590 --> 00:02:35.050 to Egypt in a place called Goshen. And then the 00:02:35.050 --> 00:02:39.550 people begin to really populate the area. So 00:02:39.550 --> 00:02:41.330 much so that the Pharaoh became a little bit 00:02:41.330 --> 00:02:45.889 concerned about it all and decided to first enslave 00:02:45.889 --> 00:02:49.610 them and then begin to limit the population by 00:02:49.610 --> 00:02:54.159 killing newborn children. That's where we're 00:02:54.159 --> 00:02:56.819 getting at Moses, in the Nile with the basket 00:02:56.819 --> 00:03:00.020 and all that business, right? So that's kind 00:03:00.020 --> 00:03:03.580 of how it comes to be that the people of God 00:03:03.580 --> 00:03:06.599 end up enslaved in Egypt. Now let's talk about 00:03:06.599 --> 00:03:10.300 their jailbreak. God's people, again, enslaved 00:03:10.300 --> 00:03:12.599 in Egypt, oppressed under a Pharaoh who didn't 00:03:12.599 --> 00:03:15.719 remember Joseph and wasn't interested in making 00:03:15.719 --> 00:03:19.539 accommodations. And along comes Moses, right? 00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:23.500 He's basically trying to retire early. with a 00:03:23.500 --> 00:03:26.659 nice shepherding gig when God calls him through 00:03:26.659 --> 00:03:31.300 this burning bush. And Moses' assignment? Face 00:03:31.300 --> 00:03:34.240 down the most powerful man and demand a mass 00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:40.180 release of free slavery. So, cue the ten plagues, 00:03:40.259 --> 00:03:43.500 right? Frogs, locusts, blood rivers. And then 00:03:43.500 --> 00:03:46.620 the final heartbreak, the death of the firstborn. 00:03:47.180 --> 00:03:53.439 Pharaoh relents, but temporarily. As the Israelites 00:03:53.439 --> 00:03:56.659 begin to make their escape, they hit a roadblock, 00:03:56.819 --> 00:04:01.719 the literal Red Sea. God tells Moses, raise the 00:04:01.719 --> 00:04:04.900 staff, and boom, walls of water on both sides. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:07.539 Israelites stroll across like they're on the 00:04:07.539 --> 00:04:11.020 spiritual runway. The Egyptians, they try to 00:04:11.020 --> 00:04:14.460 follow, and God hits the divine flush handle. 00:04:15.099 --> 00:04:19.250 Game over for the Egyptians. The verses that 00:04:19.250 --> 00:04:21.550 we can find this in is the stories in Exodus 00:04:21.550 --> 00:04:24.189 1 through 4, some key verses here, Exodus 3 and 00:04:24.189 --> 00:04:28.649 10. So now, go, I am sending you to Pharaoh to 00:04:28.649 --> 00:04:31.350 bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt, 00:04:31.550 --> 00:04:34.850 he commands of Moses. And then later on in the 00:04:34.850 --> 00:04:38.189 book of Exodus, in 14, 21, and 22, we actually 00:04:38.189 --> 00:04:41.930 read the Red Sea account. Then Moses stretched 00:04:41.930 --> 00:04:45.170 out his hand over the sea. And all that night, 00:04:45.250 --> 00:04:47.529 the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east 00:04:47.529 --> 00:04:50.810 wind and turned it into dry land. The waters 00:04:50.810 --> 00:04:52.610 were divided and the Israelites went through 00:04:52.610 --> 00:04:55.350 the sea on dry ground with a wall of water on 00:04:55.350 --> 00:05:00.670 their right and on their left. This was a jailbreak 00:05:00.670 --> 00:05:04.730 on a massive scale, right? Think Oceans 11, but 00:05:04.730 --> 00:05:08.610 with plagues instead of gadgets. And it's the 00:05:08.610 --> 00:05:13.310 classic story of liberation because it shows, 00:05:14.110 --> 00:05:16.810 that there is no worldly power that can block 00:05:16.810 --> 00:05:20.870 a God -ordained exit strategy, right? Pharaoh 00:05:20.870 --> 00:05:24.930 thought he had the upper hand, but God wasn't 00:05:24.930 --> 00:05:29.129 playing checkers. He was playing 40 chess. And 00:05:29.129 --> 00:05:31.790 what's amazing about this particular instance 00:05:31.790 --> 00:05:35.189 is the sheer coordination of all of these things 00:05:35.189 --> 00:05:37.850 for this to happen in this way at this moment. 00:05:38.079 --> 00:05:43.560 Moses' obedience, God's timing, and the people's 00:05:43.560 --> 00:05:46.180 trust in the middle of what had to have been 00:05:46.180 --> 00:05:50.980 a terrifying moment. And let's be honest, right? 00:05:51.060 --> 00:05:54.240 Walking between two massive walls of water on 00:05:54.240 --> 00:05:58.519 either side is not for the faint of heart. It's 00:05:58.519 --> 00:06:02.839 a faith move, a fear move, and a freedom march 00:06:02.839 --> 00:06:05.939 all rolled into one. What is the moral of this 00:06:05.939 --> 00:06:09.100 breakout story? When God is your escape route, 00:06:09.240 --> 00:06:13.660 even oceans will move out of the way. Let's look 00:06:13.660 --> 00:06:16.379 at another from the Old Testament. Again, a little 00:06:16.379 --> 00:06:18.819 bit of backstory before we get into the escape. 00:06:19.220 --> 00:06:22.420 This one is called Hide and Seek Jericho Edition. 00:06:23.480 --> 00:06:27.600 Now, Jericho. We all know Jericho. We know Joshua. 00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:31.339 We know Jericho and the walls come tumbling down, 00:06:31.560 --> 00:06:37.149 right? But before that dramatic event, There's 00:06:37.149 --> 00:06:41.189 a reconnaissance. Jacob sends a couple of spies 00:06:41.189 --> 00:06:44.910 into the city to figure out what they can figure 00:06:44.910 --> 00:06:49.970 out before they attack the city. And they encounter, 00:06:50.149 --> 00:06:55.269 well, this woman with a less than stellar reputation, 00:06:55.670 --> 00:06:59.990 and her name was Rahab. And Rahab's story is 00:06:59.990 --> 00:07:03.269 what happens when espionage meets redemption. 00:07:04.009 --> 00:07:08.800 Two Israelites. As spies enter enemy territory, 00:07:08.920 --> 00:07:11.759 and Rahab, a local woman, again with a less than 00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:15.139 perfect past, gives them sanctuary, not in a 00:07:15.139 --> 00:07:19.279 luxury suite, but rather in her home, built into 00:07:19.279 --> 00:07:23.300 those very famous walls. When the authorities 00:07:23.300 --> 00:07:25.579 come looking for these two spies, they have been 00:07:25.579 --> 00:07:28.459 alerted there were two spies, and they come to 00:07:28.459 --> 00:07:31.500 Rahab. Rahab sends them off on a wild goose chase, 00:07:31.699 --> 00:07:35.060 and then helps the spies escape by lowering them. 00:07:35.639 --> 00:07:38.040 down a scarlet rope. That scarlet rope will end 00:07:38.040 --> 00:07:41.600 up becoming a symbol of her salvation, because 00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:43.680 when they do attack, they look for the scarlet 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:46.860 rope with Rahab where she lived, and they save 00:07:46.860 --> 00:07:50.620 her. Now, why would they save her, and why would 00:07:50.620 --> 00:07:54.740 Rahab help this way? Well, let's look at her 00:07:54.740 --> 00:07:59.139 words in Joshua chapter 2, the 9th through the 00:07:59.139 --> 00:08:24.009 11th verses. She says, Not a person of God, but 00:08:24.009 --> 00:08:27.790 someone that has fully understood the God that 00:08:27.790 --> 00:08:33.210 is protecting these people is legit, right? Joshua 00:08:33.210 --> 00:08:36.909 chapter 2 verses 15 shows our escape. So she 00:08:36.909 --> 00:08:38.990 let them down by a rope through the window for 00:08:38.990 --> 00:08:41.570 the house she lived in, again, was a part of 00:08:41.570 --> 00:08:45.909 the city wall. Rahab didn't just help these spies 00:08:45.909 --> 00:08:48.049 escape. Remember I mentioned her reputation. 00:08:48.149 --> 00:08:53.610 She was escaping something too, her past. Her 00:08:53.610 --> 00:08:56.990 decision saved her life, her families, and embedded 00:08:56.990 --> 00:09:02.769 her in Israel's story. She even shows up. and 00:09:02.769 --> 00:09:05.289 Jesus' family tree, if you want to look it up, 00:09:05.309 --> 00:09:09.309 Matthew 1 and 5. Now that, friends, is redemption 00:09:09.309 --> 00:09:13.870 at its finest. And what's striking to me, again, 00:09:13.990 --> 00:09:18.590 we get the benefit of reading these stories, 00:09:18.629 --> 00:09:21.070 and we get the benefit of all of the history 00:09:21.070 --> 00:09:23.929 of God and God's people to put our faith on, 00:09:23.970 --> 00:09:28.500 to hang it on. They didn't, right? They didn't 00:09:28.500 --> 00:09:32.080 have thousands of years of God interacting with 00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:34.419 God's people as some sort of evidence they could 00:09:34.419 --> 00:09:37.360 use to go, seems like it's true. They had to 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:41.259 believe on real faith. Put ourselves in Abraham's 00:09:41.259 --> 00:09:44.500 sandals, right? God tells Abraham he's an ur. 00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:47.539 Start walking that way because I'm going to give 00:09:47.539 --> 00:09:49.620 you a promised land. Well, where am I going? 00:09:50.200 --> 00:09:53.200 How long is this trip going to take? Who really 00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:57.039 are you? None of that's recorded. Abraham just 00:09:57.039 --> 00:10:02.019 started walking. That's faith, right? That's 00:10:02.019 --> 00:10:08.379 faith. She had only heard of Israel's God, yet 00:10:08.379 --> 00:10:12.539 she believed enough to risk everything in her 00:10:12.539 --> 00:10:16.220 life. And she wasn't just a side character. She 00:10:16.220 --> 00:10:19.799 was a pivotal player in this very divine drama. 00:10:20.299 --> 00:10:25.759 And her bold faith rewrote her. personal destiny. 00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:29.700 Sometimes, sometimes our greatest escape comes 00:10:29.700 --> 00:10:34.000 through the most unexpected person. And sometimes, 00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:40.759 sometimes the escape is the transformation. Now, 00:10:40.840 --> 00:10:43.519 this one is called The Fire That Didn't Work. 00:10:43.779 --> 00:10:47.139 This is the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, 00:10:47.320 --> 00:10:50.299 right? We know this story. Now, how did these 00:10:50.299 --> 00:10:53.720 young men get there? Very quickly, right? In 00:10:53.720 --> 00:10:59.460 586, the temple is destroyed. The Assyrians take 00:10:59.460 --> 00:11:05.019 over and take the Jewish people hostage. Then 00:11:05.019 --> 00:11:07.480 the Babylonians conquer the Assyrians and they 00:11:07.480 --> 00:11:10.720 take them to Babylon. And there we find this 00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:15.340 cat named Nebuchadnezzar, right? And Nebuchadnezzar 00:11:15.340 --> 00:11:21.080 loved himself. Huge ego, right? And he builds 00:11:21.080 --> 00:11:24.850 this gigantic... gigantic golden statue of himself 00:11:24.850 --> 00:11:28.909 and demands people worship. These three young 00:11:28.909 --> 00:11:31.450 Hebrew men, they might be called the original 00:11:31.450 --> 00:11:34.289 fateful rebels. They refuse to kneel. The king 00:11:34.289 --> 00:11:38.429 is so mad that he orders the furnace to be cranked 00:11:38.429 --> 00:11:42.029 up seven times hotter. They're tossed in, but 00:11:42.029 --> 00:11:47.009 instead of screams, they're singing. And when 00:11:47.009 --> 00:11:50.139 the king peers in, he does. He doesn't see just 00:11:50.139 --> 00:11:53.759 three, he sees a fourth figure. One scripture 00:11:53.759 --> 00:11:58.200 says, like a son of the gods, the fire burns 00:11:58.200 --> 00:12:03.200 their ropes, but doesn't burn them. Daniel chapter 00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:09.139 3, 17 and 18 records the words of these young 00:12:09.139 --> 00:12:12.399 men. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, 00:12:12.700 --> 00:12:19.549 the God we serve is able to deliver us. Faith 00:12:19.549 --> 00:12:25.370 part. But even if he does not, we want you to 00:12:25.370 --> 00:12:30.850 know we will never serve your gods. And then 00:12:30.850 --> 00:12:35.309 the dramatic scene inside the furnace, 3, Daniel 00:12:35.309 --> 00:12:39.750 chapter 3, 24 and 25. Look, I see four men walking 00:12:39.750 --> 00:12:43.629 around in the fire, unbound and unharmed. And 00:12:43.629 --> 00:12:49.179 the fourth looks like a son of the gods. This 00:12:49.179 --> 00:12:52.159 isn't just an escape from death, friends. This 00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:56.659 is a theological mic drop. And this is also important 00:12:56.659 --> 00:12:59.379 to point here. The presence of God doesn't always 00:12:59.379 --> 00:13:03.700 prevent the fire, but it does guarantee you won't 00:13:03.700 --> 00:13:08.120 have to face that fire alone. And these young 00:13:08.120 --> 00:13:10.639 men, they did not know if they had survived, 00:13:10.700 --> 00:13:15.740 but they knew their God was worth the risk. Their 00:13:15.740 --> 00:13:18.440 defiance wasn't rebellion for rebellion's sake. 00:13:18.500 --> 00:13:20.840 They weren't just being typical teenagers. No, 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:25.279 it was rooted in reverence for their God. And 00:13:25.279 --> 00:13:29.899 their faith didn't depend on an outcome, only 00:13:29.899 --> 00:13:33.379 obedience. When God shows up in the fire, you 00:13:33.379 --> 00:13:35.840 know you're not just surviving. Friend, you're 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:40.100 testifying. Sometimes, moral of this story, sometimes 00:13:40.100 --> 00:13:44.120 God doesn't pull you out. So, Holy Spirit 00:14:00.929 --> 00:14:03.570 descends upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost. 00:14:04.090 --> 00:14:06.870 They go rushing out of the street, right? The 00:14:06.870 --> 00:14:10.330 people are there for the festival of the first 00:14:10.330 --> 00:14:12.789 fruits. So that's why the city was full again. 00:14:12.929 --> 00:14:15.070 They start preaching. Thousands of people were 00:14:15.070 --> 00:14:17.169 saved that day. You guys know that part, right? 00:14:17.490 --> 00:14:21.250 And then what happens next is, given that success, 00:14:21.570 --> 00:14:23.889 they just start going and doing it every day. 00:14:24.570 --> 00:14:28.090 So the disciples who once were cowering, hiding 00:14:28.090 --> 00:14:31.889 in an upper room, now are emboldened with the 00:14:31.889 --> 00:14:33.529 power of the Holy Spirit in them. They've gone 00:14:33.529 --> 00:14:38.269 from cowards to street preachers, right? And 00:14:38.269 --> 00:14:40.750 they're going around Jerusalem, and they're teaching 00:14:40.750 --> 00:14:43.529 and preaching in the name of Jesus Christ, and 00:14:43.529 --> 00:14:46.330 they're healing in the name of Jesus Christ. 00:14:46.509 --> 00:14:49.529 And when the religious leaders see it, they don't 00:14:49.529 --> 00:14:51.289 know what to do. They're afraid to kill them 00:14:51.289 --> 00:14:55.610 because the last time they tried that, it didn't 00:14:55.610 --> 00:14:58.649 work out so great. So what do we do with them? 00:14:58.690 --> 00:15:04.309 Because they won't stop, right? So Peter is arrested 00:15:04.309 --> 00:15:07.879 by King Herod. He's heavily guarded, and he's 00:15:07.879 --> 00:15:12.059 put on lockdown. While the early church is off 00:15:12.059 --> 00:15:15.220 to another house, praying fervently for him, 00:15:15.639 --> 00:15:20.559 there at the jail, an angel shows up. No lockpicks, 00:15:20.740 --> 00:15:24.039 no battering ram, just divine light and a command 00:15:24.039 --> 00:15:29.299 to get up. Chains fall off, doors open, and Peter 00:15:29.299 --> 00:15:33.580 strolls out like it's casual Friday. Then here's 00:15:33.580 --> 00:15:37.100 the kicker. He knocks at the door of the house 00:15:37.100 --> 00:15:40.899 church. All the early Christians were praying. 00:15:41.019 --> 00:15:42.940 Remember, they didn't come to a place like this 00:15:42.940 --> 00:15:44.759 to go to church. They met in people's houses. 00:15:45.500 --> 00:15:48.179 He shows up where they're all praying in someone's 00:15:48.179 --> 00:15:50.759 house, knocks on the door. And the servant girl 00:15:50.759 --> 00:15:54.360 is so shocked. She actually leaves him standing 00:15:54.360 --> 00:15:57.919 outside. She thinks he's a ghost. She can't believe 00:15:57.919 --> 00:16:01.620 it. Acts chapter 12 and five says, so Peter was 00:16:01.620 --> 00:16:03.909 kept in prison, but the church. was earnestly 00:16:03.909 --> 00:16:07.269 praying to God for him. And in Acts 27 and 10 00:16:07.269 --> 00:16:10.070 shows our jailbreak. Suddenly an angel of the 00:16:10.070 --> 00:16:12.629 Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. 00:16:13.269 --> 00:16:15.690 Quick, get up. The iron gate opened by itself 00:16:15.690 --> 00:16:20.230 and they went through it. Peter's jailbreak, 00:16:20.370 --> 00:16:24.029 honestly, is as much about divine intervention 00:16:24.029 --> 00:16:29.809 as it is human disbelief. It's almost comical 00:16:29.809 --> 00:16:33.879 when you stop and think about it. We're in the 00:16:33.879 --> 00:16:38.279 house church. Peter has been arrested. What are 00:16:38.279 --> 00:16:41.580 we praying? Peter should continue to stay in 00:16:41.580 --> 00:16:46.899 jail? No, right? We want Peter out of jail. Don't, 00:16:46.899 --> 00:16:49.820 right? Okay. So they're praying. They believe. 00:16:49.960 --> 00:16:52.500 They've seen with their own eyes. We have seen 00:16:52.500 --> 00:16:55.840 God do crazy miracle things. And we believe if 00:16:55.840 --> 00:17:00.059 we pray, he will answer us and a miracle will 00:17:00.059 --> 00:17:05.079 happen. So we're all hanging around, right? Drinking 00:17:05.079 --> 00:17:07.700 coffee, eating Cheez -Its, and praying our tail 00:17:07.700 --> 00:17:12.160 ends off. Then the miracle happens, and they 00:17:12.160 --> 00:17:15.859 can't believe it when it shows up. Sound familiar? 00:17:17.740 --> 00:17:20.440 Right? Let's not miss the humor here. Another one from the story of 00:17:40.480 --> 00:17:44.539 Acts. This is Paul and his buddy Silas. This 00:17:44.539 --> 00:17:48.099 one's called Praise Break at Midnight. Thrown 00:17:48.099 --> 00:17:50.619 in prison after casting out a demon. And again, 00:17:50.680 --> 00:17:52.720 that's never a popular move when it costs somebody 00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:55.160 money, right? Because they were doing this stuff 00:17:55.160 --> 00:17:57.299 for free. There were people walking around the 00:17:57.299 --> 00:17:59.099 streets of Jerusalem telling people they could 00:17:59.099 --> 00:18:03.549 exercise you for a fee. And that gets them in 00:18:03.549 --> 00:18:06.650 trouble and gets them thrown back in jail.
