And this is the thing I want to explore 00:03:21.580 --> 00:03:27.379 tonight and also on Sunday. is what does it actually 00:03:27.379 --> 00:03:30.199 mean when we stop and think about it, because 00:03:30.199 --> 00:03:35.919 we've read our Bibles, that God chose this particular 00:03:35.919 --> 00:03:40.620 moment, this particular crowd, and that particular 00:03:40.620 --> 00:03:46.979 fire to launch his church. So, as I want to do, let's start 00:04:29.980 --> 00:04:33.860 with some context. Pentecost wasn't a brand new 00:04:33.860 --> 00:04:37.100 thing. In fact, we've talked about this several 00:04:37.100 --> 00:04:40.839 times. Pentecost is something that we celebrate 00:04:40.839 --> 00:04:44.920 now after the events that we now know as Pentecost. 00:04:45.769 --> 00:04:49.170 But Jerusalem was filled with people at the time 00:04:49.170 --> 00:04:54.110 celebrating a Jewish festival. And that festival 00:04:54.110 --> 00:04:58.509 was called Shavuot. And it's also called the 00:04:58.509 --> 00:05:03.750 Feast of Weeks. It marked seven days, seven weeks 00:05:03.750 --> 00:05:09.110 after Passover. And it was a harvest festival. 00:05:09.230 --> 00:05:12.889 We've talked about this. But it also, and pay 00:05:12.889 --> 00:05:15.050 attention to this, this is super, super cool. 00:05:15.129 --> 00:05:18.050 I did not come up with this idea, but I have 00:05:18.050 --> 00:05:20.430 discovered this connection in my research about 00:05:20.430 --> 00:05:25.250 this, and I think it's super cool. Shavuot also 00:05:25.250 --> 00:05:28.350 was a commemoration of the giving of the law 00:05:28.350 --> 00:05:33.209 at Sinai, where the Ten Commandments are given 00:05:33.209 --> 00:05:37.649 to God's people. Let's revisit that story in 00:05:37.649 --> 00:05:41.449 Exodus chapter 19. Just verses 16 through 19, 00:05:41.569 --> 00:05:45.569 so we get where we're at. On the morning of the 00:05:45.569 --> 00:05:49.310 third day, there were thunders and lightnings 00:05:49.310 --> 00:05:53.310 and a thick cloud on the mountain. That's the 00:05:53.310 --> 00:06:00.810 scene here at Sinai. Fire, wind, trembling. If 00:06:00.810 --> 00:06:03.009 you know anything about Pentecost, you will see 00:06:03.009 --> 00:06:06.970 that's very familiar. And God's not just making 00:06:06.970 --> 00:06:11.579 a dramatic interest. He's establishing a covenant, 00:06:11.660 --> 00:06:16.259 and he's initiating a relationship between himself 00:06:16.259 --> 00:06:22.759 and a redeemed people. Sinai was not just also 00:06:22.759 --> 00:06:27.699 about the law, but it was also about identity. 00:06:28.420 --> 00:06:32.240 It was the moment when the nation stepped into 00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:38.000 its role as a priesthood for the world. We'll 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:41.220 jump to the New Testament, and we go to Acts 00:06:41.220 --> 00:06:45.720 2. Acts 2 says, when the day of Pentecost arrived, 00:06:46.180 --> 00:06:50.800 a sound like a mighty rushing wind, tongues of 00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:53.879 fire, all filled with the Holy Spirit, right, 00:06:53.959 --> 00:06:58.160 descended upon the disciples. And we're meant 00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:03.319 to hear the echoes of those two events. This 00:07:03.319 --> 00:07:08.379 isn't God at Pentecost doing something new. It's 00:07:08.379 --> 00:07:11.180 actually God fulfilling something that's old. 00:07:12.660 --> 00:07:16.860 Sinai was God coming down to dwell near people. 00:07:18.339 --> 00:07:24.459 Pentecost is God coming to dwell in them. And 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:28.560 it happened during a feast in a city filled with 00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:32.560 religious pilgrims. Jews from all across the 00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:35.600 known world had gathered in Jerusalem, each bringing 00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:40.209 their own culture. language, and tradition. The 00:07:40.209 --> 00:07:44.870 setting was a collision of worlds, and God chose 00:07:44.870 --> 00:07:50.889 that moment, not for convenience, but symbolism. 00:07:52.550 --> 00:07:55.810 The spirit didn't descend on a holy mountain 00:07:55.810 --> 00:07:59.250 this time, but on an ordinary room filled with 00:07:59.250 --> 00:08:03.459 ordinary people. Reminding us the gospel does 00:08:03.459 --> 00:08:06.439 not begin with the elite or the righteous, but 00:08:06.439 --> 00:08:10.899 with the faithful and the fearful. The Spirit's 00:08:10.899 --> 00:08:14.180 arrival transforms a hesitant group of Jesus 00:08:14.180 --> 00:08:19.699 followers into the living body of Christ. A mobile 00:08:19.699 --> 00:08:25.980 temple. A living tabernacle. It is, in essence, 00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:30.480 God moving into the neighborhood. And this is... 00:08:30.730 --> 00:08:34.950 covenant renewal on a cosmic scale. It's about 00:08:34.950 --> 00:08:37.870 God reasserting his presence, not from above, 00:08:38.070 --> 00:08:42.950 but now from within. And that changes everything. 00:08:43.509 --> 00:08:48.409 It changes worship, which moves from a sacrificial 00:08:48.409 --> 00:08:52.789 system in a temple to a sacrifice of praise in 00:08:52.789 --> 00:08:56.149 the lives of believers. It changes leadership 00:08:56.149 --> 00:09:01.509 from hierarchical priesthoods to a spirit -led 00:09:01.509 --> 00:09:06.889 community. And it changes mission from maintaining 00:09:06.889 --> 00:09:13.850 purity to spreading reconciliation. So let's 00:09:13.850 --> 00:09:18.350 talk about that crowd. Luke, in Acts chapter 00:09:18.350 --> 00:09:22.269 2, tells us that there were Jews from every nation 00:09:22.269 --> 00:09:28.690 under heaven. This phrase isn't casual. It's 00:09:28.690 --> 00:09:33.299 theological. It's actually meant to evoke Genesis 00:09:33.299 --> 00:09:38.679 chapter 11 and the Tower of Babel. Acts chapter 00:09:38.679 --> 00:09:44.600 2, 5 through 11, well, 5, says, we hear them 00:09:44.600 --> 00:09:47.639 telling in our own languages the mighty works 00:09:47.639 --> 00:09:54.620 of God. Genesis 11, 7, 8 says, come, let us go 00:09:54.620 --> 00:09:58.570 down there and confuse their language. so that 00:09:58.570 --> 00:10:01.450 they may not be able to understand one's speech. 00:10:02.769 --> 00:10:07.610 At Babel, pride was an attempt to build a tower 00:10:07.610 --> 00:10:13.730 to God. At Pentecost, humility welcomed God's 00:10:13.730 --> 00:10:18.230 descent. The confusion of tongues that scattered 00:10:18.230 --> 00:10:24.029 humanity is undone by a spirit who unites through 00:10:24.029 --> 00:10:30.080 understanding. This isn't just poetic. It's prophetic. 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:34.059 Pentecost signals the launch of a global church. 00:10:34.580 --> 00:10:39.919 The gospel is multilingual from day one. God 00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:43.279 is not waiting for people to assimilate to a 00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:49.039 type. He's meeting them where they are. Think 00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:52.399 about the social implications. Language, which 00:10:52.399 --> 00:10:58.299 once divided, now unites. The Spirit doesn't 00:10:58.299 --> 00:11:02.460 erase cultural identity. He redeems it. The gospel 00:11:02.460 --> 00:11:06.039 travels best not when it colonizes, but when 00:11:06.039 --> 00:11:11.639 it translates. That's God's heart. That's reconciliation. 00:11:12.940 --> 00:11:16.539 Not just vertical, the relationship, us and God, 00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:20.460 but the horizontal, us and each other as well. 00:11:21.659 --> 00:11:25.590 Cultural walls begin to fall. The Spirit speaks 00:11:25.590 --> 00:11:31.289 in every accent. And notice, the first result 00:11:31.289 --> 00:11:36.570 of the Spirit's filling is speech, words, proclamation. 00:11:36.789 --> 00:11:40.070 What does that mean? It means that this is not 00:11:40.070 --> 00:11:44.269 meant to be a private religious experience. The 00:11:44.269 --> 00:11:49.350 Spirit speaks outward. Witness is not a program 00:11:49.350 --> 00:11:55.450 to follow. It's a person set on fire. This is 00:11:55.450 --> 00:11:59.129 where theology meets anthropology. God isn't 00:11:59.129 --> 00:12:01.830 just redeeming souls, he's redeeming societies. 00:12:03.090 --> 00:12:07.169 Every tribe and tongue is no longer erased in 00:12:07.169 --> 00:12:11.429 the kingdom, it's celebrated. Diversity isn't 00:12:11.429 --> 00:12:16.409 a detour, it's design. This speaks into our world 00:12:16.409 --> 00:12:18.929 today where language and ethnicity and identity 00:12:18.929 --> 00:12:24.440 continue to divide us. Pentecost should stand 00:12:24.440 --> 00:12:29.139 as a rebuke of division and a celebration of 00:12:29.139 --> 00:12:36.019 God's real reconciliation power. Now enter our 00:12:36.019 --> 00:12:40.200 friend Peter. The guy who buckled under pressure 00:12:40.200 --> 00:12:42.980 by a campfire is now breathing fire from a pulpit. 00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:49.460 What changed? The Spirit changed him. Acts chapter 00:12:49.460 --> 00:12:52.620 2, verse 17, in the last days it shall be, God 00:12:52.620 --> 00:12:56.720 declares, that I will pour my spirit on all flesh. 00:12:58.379 --> 00:13:02.059 You may not know. What? That's Peter in Acts. 00:13:02.259 --> 00:13:05.980 No, that's Peter in Acts, but he's quoting Joel, 00:13:06.179 --> 00:13:10.980 the prophet from the Old Testament, because he 00:13:10.980 --> 00:13:15.120 understands now Pentecost is not a surprise. 00:13:15.820 --> 00:13:20.500 It's the fulfillment. The prophets had seen this. 00:13:21.899 --> 00:13:25.259 In case you don't believe me, Joel chapter 2, 00:13:25.340 --> 00:13:28.879 28 -29. And it shall come to pass afterwards 00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:31.179 that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh, 00:13:31.360 --> 00:13:34.679 and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. 00:13:36.320 --> 00:13:39.779 God's spirit used to rest on prophets and priests 00:13:39.779 --> 00:13:42.679 and kings. Now it rests on sons and daughters, 00:13:42.840 --> 00:13:47.880 on men and women, on the young and the old. It's 00:13:47.880 --> 00:13:52.100 democratized holiness. And it's not power for 00:13:52.100 --> 00:13:55.500 power's sake. It's power for reconciliation, 00:13:55.600 --> 00:14:00.139 for witness, for love, for embodying the kingdom 00:14:00.139 --> 00:14:05.320 of God. John chapter 14, 16, and 17 says, He 00:14:05.320 --> 00:14:08.340 will give you another helper to be with you forever, 00:14:08.559 --> 00:14:12.500 for he dwells with you and will be with you. 00:14:13.769 --> 00:14:16.529 The Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the indwelling of 00:14:16.529 --> 00:14:19.509 the Spirit in us is not an accessory to faith. 00:14:20.230 --> 00:14:25.110 It's the engine of it. Because he's the one who 00:14:25.110 --> 00:14:29.289 convicts and comforts and guides and glorifies 00:14:29.289 --> 00:14:35.169 Christ. And Peter's sermon is not just a motivational 00:14:35.169 --> 00:14:39.250 speech. It's a Spirit -breathed interpretation 00:14:39.250 --> 00:14:44.419 of history. The Spirit now connects those dots 00:14:44.419 --> 00:14:47.860 that the disciples had up until that point been 00:14:47.860 --> 00:14:54.240 missing. Now they see Jesus crucified was no 00:14:54.240 --> 00:15:00.259 accident. It was the climax of a rescue plan. 00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:05.700 And this is communal. Peter's call is not to 00:15:05.700 --> 00:15:09.440 isolate believers, but calling them rather to 00:15:09.440 --> 00:15:12.720 a new kind of community. Remember, the early 00:15:12.720 --> 00:15:16.340 church didn't just believe together. They lived 00:15:16.340 --> 00:15:20.100 together. They broke bread together. They shared 00:15:20.100 --> 00:15:23.659 their goods and their burdens. And that's the 00:15:23.659 --> 00:15:27.659 spirit at work too. When the people hear these 00:15:27.659 --> 00:15:30.559 words from Peter, Scripture says they're cut 00:15:30.559 --> 00:15:35.720 to the heart. Not just with guilt, but with recognition. 00:15:37.120 --> 00:15:42.799 And they ask, what shall we do? Because the gospel 00:15:42.799 --> 00:15:47.539 invites not just belief. Repent and be baptized, every 00:16:04.659 --> 00:16:09.220 one of you. And you will receive the gift of 00:16:09.220 --> 00:16:14.879 the Holy Spirit. And let's not rush too quickly 00:16:14.879 --> 00:16:18.480 through this. Don't miss the transformation here. 00:16:19.759 --> 00:16:23.299 The same crew that were running from soldiers 00:16:23.299 --> 00:16:29.720 are now running toward a mission. Pentecost didn't 00:16:29.720 --> 00:16:33.759 give them personalities. It gave them purpose. 00:16:35.320 --> 00:16:38.779 The Spirit doesn't just show up to make us feel 00:16:38.779 --> 00:16:45.019 better. shows up to make us braver. It's born in the presence of God, 00:16:52.200 --> 00:16:57.639 born in breath, boldness, and born with a mission 00:16:57.639 --> 00:17:01.539 to witness to the ends of the earth. That means 00:17:01.539 --> 00:17:05.059 the spirit you have today is not secondhand. 00:17:06.680 --> 00:17:11.990 The spirit we have is not a downgrade. The same 00:17:11.990 --> 00:17:16.789 spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, the same 00:17:16.789 --> 00:17:20.190 fire that fell from the sky in Jerusalem, the 00:17:20.190 --> 00:17:23.710 same voice that spoke through Peter that day, 00:17:23.869 --> 00:17:28.509 that's who dwells in you. Romans 8 and 11, the 00:17:28.509 --> 00:17:30.569 spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead 00:17:30.569 --> 00:17:34.269 dwells in you. He will also give life to your 00:17:34.269 --> 00:17:38.789 mortal bodies. This is resurrection power. This 00:17:38.789 --> 00:17:44.019 is new creation living. And it's not just for 00:17:44.019 --> 00:17:51.299 you. It's for the whole world through you. Now, 00:17:51.319 --> 00:17:56.859 your calling might not look like Peter's. You 00:17:56.859 --> 00:17:58.900 might not stand before a crowd of thousands. 00:18:00.700 --> 00:18:03.640 But you do stand before your family, your co 00:18:03.640 --> 00:18:06.980 -workers, your friends, your neighbors. And they 00:18:06.980 --> 00:18:10.279 need to see what spirit -filled reconciliation 00:18:11.259 --> 00:18:15.259 actually looks like. Not just in doctrine and 00:18:15.259 --> 00:18:21.119 beliefs, but in how we forgive, how we welcome, 00:18:21.319 --> 00:18:27.259 and how we live. The relational impact of Pentecost 00:18:27.259 --> 00:18:32.700 is ongoing. It's how we reconcile with our enemies, 00:18:32.960 --> 00:18:38.299 calling us to include the outcast, to prioritize 00:18:38.299 --> 00:18:45.750 community. over consumerism. The spirit is not 00:18:45.750 --> 00:18:53.430 private piety. It's public witness. So, what 00:18:53.430 --> 00:18:59.490 do we do with this? We live reconciled. We speak 00:18:59.490 --> 00:19:05.250 boldly and we lean into the spirit. Because you 00:19:05.250 --> 00:19:07.630 don't have to climb a mountain to meet with God 00:19:07.630 --> 00:19:12.960 anymore. You just have to breathe because God's 00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:17.759 moved in. He's not far. He's not silent. He's 00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:21.380 not waiting for you to prove yourself. He's present, 00:19:21.420 --> 00:19:27.140 and he is still speaking. This is the story of 00:19:27.140 --> 00:19:31.420 Pentecost. In jail cells, in small 00:20:47.400 --> 00:20:50.240 town churches, in city coffee shops, in quiet 00:20:50.240 --> 00:20:55.339 hearts, trembling hands.
