00;00;00;00 - 00;00;04;14 I’m Dr. Rob Winn and you're listening to Real Cancer Talk 00;00;04;14 - 00;00;07;14 from VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. 00;00;07;15 - 00;00;09;15 I am Community Clo. 00;00;09;15 - 00;00;12;13 Welcome to Community Conversations. 00;00;12;13 - 00;00;17;00 Now this is a show and a day and a night and an evening. 00;00;17;00 - 00;00;21;03 At any time of no copays and no white coats, 00;00;21;03 - 00;00;23;19 we are having curative conversations. 00;00;23;19 - 00;00;25;10 My very special guest. 00;00;25;10 - 00;00;29;17 He is the head man, the director of the VCU Massey Cancer Center. 00;00;29;21 - 00;00;32;19 Doctor Robert Winn, how are you? 00;00;32;19 - 00;00;36;07 You know, Sister Clo, whenever I’m with you, I'm good, I'm good. 00;00;37;04 - 00;00;40;26 Wow. And you're doing big, big things and we're going to talk about that. 00;00;40;26 - 00;00;42;18 But we have very special guests. 00;00;42;18 - 00;00;44;16 It's almost like a reunion. 00;00;44;16 - 00;00;49;08 Facts and Faith Fridays going strong since August of 2020. 00;00;49;15 - 00;00;53;22 My other special guest joining me on the show is sister Rudene Mercer 00;00;53;22 - 00;00;58;04 Haynes, Facts and Faith Friday's co-founder, partner at Hunton 00;00;58;04 - 00;01;02;23 Andrews Kurth law firm and a Massey advisory board member. 00;01;02;29 - 00;01;05;29 Sister Rudene, I miss ya, how are you doing? 00;01;06;17 - 00;01;07;23 I miss you, too. 00;01;07;23 - 00;01;09;16 And so good to hear your voice. 00;01;09;16 - 00;01;12;15 Happy to be here to talk and celebrate 00;01;12;15 - 00;01;15;04 all that we've done with Facts and Faith Fridays. Yes. 00;01;15;04 - 00;01;17;26 And we have Reverend Rachel Pierce. 00;01;17;26 - 00;01;23;18 She's Massey Facts and Faith Fridays faith liaison and engagement coordinator. 00;01;23;22 - 00;01;25;02 How are you doing? 00;01;25;02 - 00;01;27;04 I am so thankful to be with you all today. 00;01;27;04 - 00;01;28;24 Well, this is good stuff. 00;01;28;24 - 00;01;31;16 Now about Facts and Faith Fridays. 00;01;31;16 - 00;01;34;19 I'm going to get this short synopsis and then we're going to delve into it. 00;01;35;01 - 00;01;38;07 It started during Covid to share our latest 00;01;38;07 - 00;01;41;09 Covid health information with faith leaders. 00;01;41;19 - 00;01;46;29 Faith leaders are trusted by congregations for accurate information. 00;01;47;06 - 00;01;50;20 So, Doctor Robert Winn, let's start this dialog going from the past 00;01;50;25 - 00;01;53;06 and current topics discussed. 00;01;53;06 - 00;01;57;09 So you know, like many hip hop groups come up and all of a sudden 00;01;57;09 - 00;01;58;15 they say, well, how do you come up? 00;01;58;15 - 00;02;02;04 But there had to be that one person, you know, who kind of had that idea. 00;02;02;04 - 00;02;02;14 Yeah. 00;02;02;14 - 00;02;06;07 So this actually all credit is going to Sister Rudene. 00;02;06;18 - 00;02;10;27 You know, she, actually, we were talking about 00;02;10;27 - 00;02;14;02 the issues around Covid and health and other things. 00;02;14;22 - 00;02;17;24 And she was talking with Pastor Todd Gray. 00;02;18;00 - 00;02;20;27 And to be honest with you, this is like, you know, you know, 00;02;20;27 - 00;02;23;06 you know, how the Treacherous Three got together. You know what I mean? 00;02;23;06 - 00;02;27;19 So she was really the, the in my mind, the person 00;02;27;19 - 00;02;30;19 and the impetus and the catalyst for bringing us together. 00;02;30;21 - 00;02;34;17 And, after that happened, I mean, the rest is history. 00;02;34;17 - 00;02;39;02 But I have to give all credit to Sister Rudene for having the bright idea 00;02;39;07 - 00;02;42;27 and the and the insight and the forward thinking about bringing, 00;02;42;27 - 00;02;47;00 pastor Gray myself together with her to form the Facts and Faith Friday crew. 00;02;47;11 - 00;02;48;28 Women are so smart. 00;02;48;28 - 00;02;52;19 Give it up for the queen. Yes. 00;02;52;21 - 00;02;55;11 You want to hear the real back story? Community Clovia? 00;02;55;11 - 00;02;58;26 Yes, I want the real back story. 00;02;59;02 - 00;03;00;06 The real back story. 00;03;00;06 - 00;03;02;04 Because I was on a couple of those calls. 00;03;03;13 - 00;03;05;05 All right, let me blow it out. 00;03;05;05 - 00;03;08;05 So the real backstory is 00;03;08;05 - 00;03;11;22 I had learned through one of the folks that I worked with that 00;03;11;22 - 00;03;16;00 the newly appointed director of Massey Cancer Center was a black man. 00;03;16;24 - 00;03;20;28 And when I heard that it was a black man who was a lung cancer specialist, 00;03;20;28 - 00;03;24;25 I immediately thought, oh my God, I have got to do whatever 00;03;24;25 - 00;03;28;20 I could to introduce him to the black community, 00;03;28;20 - 00;03;32;17 particularly the black faith community, because Community Clovia, you know, 00;03;32;17 - 00;03;37;00 one thing that we don't like to talk about and that's the C-word. 00;03;37;08 - 00;03;39;00 Yeah. Cancer. 00;03;39;00 - 00;03;41;13 So I because of that 00;03;41;13 - 00;03;45;13 I bee-lined it to introduce Doctor Winn to my former 00;03;45;13 - 00;03;48;27 pastor, Reverend Todd Gray, of Fifth Street Baptist church. 00;03;49;11 - 00;03;53;12 And that's how a doctor, a lawyer and a pastor got together. 00;03;53;28 - 00;03;56;11 And we just started talking about cancer. 00;03;56;11 - 00;03;58;09 We started talking about what was actually happening 00;03;58;09 - 00;04;01;19 on the ground, which was Covid, something that was unprecedented. 00;04;02;04 - 00;04;05;03 And, you know, Doctor Winn and all of his knowledge 00;04;05;03 - 00;04;10;02 and generosity was like, hey, y'all, want me to talk to the black, 00;04;10;02 - 00;04;13;07 you know, talk to your faith leaders about what's going on with Covid. 00;04;14;19 - 00;04;16;28 How about 3:00 on Friday? 00;04;16;28 - 00;04;21;18 And that's how the conversation really began back in 2020. 00;04;22;00 - 00;04;24;09 Wow. This is good stuff, Sister Rudene. 00;04;24;09 - 00;04;25;27 And you know what I love most about it? 00;04;25;27 - 00;04;29;21 When I heard that we did have the director of the VCU Massey 00;04;29;21 - 00;04;33;00 Cancer Center as a black brother that’s doing big things. 00;04;33;00 - 00;04;38;03 He is a pulmonologist and Sister Rudene and a scientist. 00;04;38;18 - 00;04;40;10 I know. You know. 00;04;40;10 - 00;04;43;10 He always says if loving science is wrong, 00;04;43;13 - 00;04;46;13 he doesn't want to be right. 00;04;47;08 - 00;04;48;01 And when you're talking 00;04;48;01 - 00;04;51;01 about a doctor, a lawyer 00;04;51;03 - 00;04;53;29 and a pastor getting together, man, 00;04;53;29 - 00;04;58;00 we have impacted the community 00;04;58;07 - 00;05;01;24 in such a way that we can have conversations and talk 00;05;01;24 - 00;05;06;03 about cancer now, or folks talking about, hey, I'm going to get that check up. 00;05;06;06 - 00;05;08;01 I'm going to see if I qualify for private 00;05;08;01 - 00;05;11;18 insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare because it's time for me to get a checkup. 00;05;11;23 - 00;05;15;14 And I just want to say thank you so much, Sister Rudene, for all you're doing 00;05;15;14 - 00;05;20;11 with Facts and Faith Fridays and Doctor Robert Winn, oh my goodness with the VCU. 00;05;20;11 - 00;05;23;29 Oh my, oh my God, this is so amazing 00;05;24;03 - 00;05;28;14 to me to learn more about my body from the top of my 00;05;28;14 - 00;05;32;03 head to the soles of my feet and preventive measures for us. 00;05;32;07 - 00;05;36;00 And never has it been done in such of a way as this. 00;05;36;06 - 00;05;38;12 Wouldn't you agree, Sister Rudene? 00;05;38;12 - 00;05;39;10 I agree. 00;05;39;10 - 00;05;39;23 I mean, 00;05;39;23 - 00;05;44;08 I think Covid, you know, revealed to us that there are a lot of disparities 00;05;44;08 - 00;05;49;02 in our system from, you know, from health care to education to all the things. 00;05;49;02 - 00;05;50;06 Right. 00;05;50;06 - 00;05;54;20 But, our conversations were a great jump off 00;05;54;20 - 00;05;58;20 point for us to have, like, hard discussions about all of the issues 00;05;58;20 - 00;06;01;26 that are plaguing, you know, the black community. 00;06;01;26 - 00;06;07;05 And, again, I can't I can't, you know, tell you how impactful it's been. 00;06;07;08 - 00;06;10;09 There's one other thing I want to mention, though, that we as just 00;06;10;09 - 00;06;13;19 as we were trying to normalize conversations about cancer 00;06;13;19 - 00;06;16;21 and making sure that we understood, you know, how, you know, Covid could be, 00;06;17;03 - 00;06;19;14 you know, avoided and how we could deal with vaccines. 00;06;19;14 - 00;06;23;21 We also elevate the conversation about mental health and mental wellness. 00;06;23;21 - 00;06;28;25 Yes. You know, we as a people have had generations of trauma. 00;06;29;02 - 00;06;32;06 We as a people every day, you know, deal with micro-aggressions, 00;06;32;07 - 00;06;35;07 those little paper cuts that kinda tear at our souls. 00;06;35;13 - 00;06;39;17 And it does has done it's taken a toll on our mental health. 00;06;39;17 - 00;06;42;14 And Covid did us no favors, right. 00;06;42;14 - 00;06;44;07 You were isolated, all the things. 00;06;44;07 - 00;06;48;02 But during our conversations, we've been talking about mental health. 00;06;48;02 - 00;06;52;25 Like, October 10th was National Mental Health Day, and we've elevated that to 00;06;52;27 - 00;06;53;22 and talk about that 00;06;53;22 - 00;06;57;04 with our pastors and preachers, because, as you know, Community Clovia, 00;06;57;14 - 00;07;00;04 you know, mental health and mental mental issues 00;07;00;04 - 00;07;03;07 are there at the root of a lot of relationship problems. 00;07;03;09 - 00;07;05;00 Absolutely. Period, the end. 00;07;05;00 - 00;07;07;24 And and this is something that we need to talk about. 00;07;07;24 - 00;07;11;18 We need to normalize conversations about mental wellness and Facts and Faith 00;07;11;18 - 00;07;15;16 Fridays has provided a great space for that discussion. 00;07;15;27 - 00;07;19;02 And then having these discussions and you add a doctor, 00;07;19;02 - 00;07;22;02 Robert Winn, and we are in a win win situation. 00;07;22;15 - 00;07;24;21 Past and current topics discussed. 00;07;26;00 - 00;07;26;17 All right. 00;07;26;17 - 00;07;31;01 Covid and vaccine, cancer screenings and disparities. 00;07;31;08 - 00;07;36;05 Pursuit of social justice disparities in policing, 00;07;36;16 - 00;07;39;20 housing and education, historic 00;07;39;20 - 00;07;43;24 medical distrust in the black community. 00;07;43;24 - 00;07;49;06 And we've discussed all of these issues and we identify these issues. 00;07;49;17 - 00;07;53;14 And I am just so thankful for the strides that have been made. 00;07;53;18 - 00;07;56;24 So now let's talk about the notable guest 00;07;57;03 - 00;08;00;09 to Facts and Faith Fridays who want to chime in on that. 00;08;00;26 - 00;08;03;14 Well, you know, we've had some people roll through. 00;08;03;14 - 00;08;05;17 We had Doctor Fauci come through. 00;08;05;17 - 00;08;09;18 We actually, one of my proudest moments was, you know, 00;08;09;20 - 00;08;14;05 where we had, you know, Doctor Fauci on and he was talking 00;08;14;05 - 00;08;17;04 about things that I think one of us sort of said, well, we'll pray for you. 00;08;17;11 - 00;08;20;03 And he said, that's the first time anybody said anything, 00;08;20;03 - 00;08;24;01 that said your faith and, you know, the the but the fun part was, 00;08;24;05 - 00;08;28;21 we've had people like the head of the NIH, Francis Collins, who came on who, 00;08;29;00 - 00;08;31;26 you know, really, you know, shared with us how he, 00;08;31;26 - 00;08;34;29 you know, how his science and his faith were not at war with one another. 00;08;34;29 - 00;08;36;16 And I think that that was a very powerful message. 00;08;36;16 - 00;08;39;01 And we had Joe Biden and and many, many others. 00;08;39;01 - 00;08;43;01 But the cool thing is that we've had people from the neighborhood, 00;08;43;01 - 00;08;47;00 you know, who were able to share their stories about breast cancer or whatever, 00;08;47;00 - 00;08;50;05 and going back to what you said, one of the things I really loved about the 00;08;50;14 - 00;08;51;15 the early version, 00;08;51;15 - 00;08;54;23 we would even try to figure out how to tell people how to keep the heat 00;08;54;23 - 00;08;57;25 on, how to get their rent paid when they couldn't do that stuff. 00;08;57;28 - 00;09;02;05 That was a really cool message of bringing in some of our local talent, 00;09;02;05 - 00;09;05;21 including the governors at that time and, you know, some of our representatives 00;09;05;21 - 00;09;09;20 and some of our delegates, particularly at the time, state 00;09;09;20 - 00;09;14;11 Senator McClellan, was really, instrumental in bringing us information. 00;09;14;16 - 00;09;17;23 And so we had a mix of scientists, government, 00;09;17;23 - 00;09;21;02 business people help people all coming together. 00;09;21;12 - 00;09;22;21 You know, for one thing. 00;09;22;21 - 00;09;24;19 And that's just to get the information out. 00;09;24;19 - 00;09;28;17 Because when you actually ask, most communities of color, 00;09;28;23 - 00;09;31;23 and you can ask Reverend Rachel, but when you ask most community 00;09;31;23 - 00;09;34;27 colors, most communities of color and rural communities, 00;09;35;01 - 00;09;38;16 what they don't have it's information and they don't know where to get it. 00;09;38;22 - 00;09;42;16 And so I am so grateful to Pastor Gray, 00;09;42;16 - 00;09;44;21 Sister Rudene, and what they were able to do 00;09;44;21 - 00;09;47;05 and helped me do with the Facts and Faith Fridays. 00;09;47;05 - 00;09;50;25 But Sis, I’m also, mad respect for you, 00;09;51;02 - 00;09;54;10 in the context of your show that you've been doing and actually 00;09;54;10 - 00;09;57;27 being able to sort of share some of these issues around cancer and everything else. 00;09;58;06 - 00;10;01;06 So just a, you know, just, you know, Community Clovia, you 00;10;02;09 - 00;10;05;00 too, are a part of this whole, you know, impact. 00;10;05;00 - 00;10;08;23 I think that Facts and Faith had, where other things kind of sprang from it 00;10;08;23 - 00;10;10;01 that are doing some good. 00;10;10;01 - 00;10;11;01 This is good stuff. 00;10;11;01 - 00;10;13;14 We're going to take a break and we'll come on back. 00;10;13;14 - 00;10;16;23 We want everybody to stay close because we're going to talk about the present 00;10;16;27 - 00;10;20;17 and future of Facts and Faith Fridays. 00;10;20;23 - 00;10;23;22 This is Community Conversations. 00;10;26;04 - 00;10;28;18 Welcome back to Community Conversations. 00;10;28;18 - 00;10;30;07 I am Community Clo. 00;10;30;07 - 00;10;33;12 It's all about no copays, no white coats. 00;10;33;12 - 00;10;36;18 We're having curative conversations with Doctor 00;10;36;18 - 00;10;39;24 Robert Winn of the VCU Massey Cancer Center. 00;10;39;24 - 00;10;43;19 We have the co-founder of Facts and Faith Fridays, Rudene 00;10;43;19 - 00;10;45;21 Mercer Haynes, joining us. 00;10;45;21 - 00;10;48;01 And we also have Reverend Rachel Pierce. 00;10;48;01 - 00;10;49;13 Now, Sister Rudene, 00;10;49;13 - 00;10;53;28 we're going to be moving into the present and future of Facts and Faith Fridays. 00;10;54;07 - 00;10;56;12 You got some good stuff for us. 00;10;56;12 - 00;10;57;13 Most definitely. 00;10;57;13 - 00;11;01;23 As you all know, this has been going strong since, you know, 2020. 00;11;01;26 - 00;11;06;00 And the fact that it's still going on, I think is in large part 00;11;06;00 - 00;11;09;26 due to the efforts and the infrastructure that VCU Massey 00;11;09;26 - 00;11;13;03 Comprehensive Cancer Center has put in place. 00;11;13;18 - 00;11;16;18 And what I but what I mean by these resources, 00;11;16;26 - 00;11;21;20 they have, you know, recruited the great minds and future generation of, 00;11;21;25 - 00;11;27;01 you know, doctors, scientists, and Doctor Anethea Sutton and we've 00;11;27;17 - 00;11;33;01 they've helped establish a liaison, a faith liaison to work with, different 00;11;33;01 - 00;11;36;03 congregations and, and pastors and faith 00;11;36;03 - 00;11;39;03 leaders across the Commonwealth, across the nation. 00;11;39;27 - 00;11;44;27 And that wonderful, amazing, reverend of a person is Reverend Rachel Pierce. 00;11;44;27 - 00;11;47;27 And I'd love for her to talk more about, you know, how 00;11;47;27 - 00;11;52;28 she's helping to amplify the reach and impact of Facts and Faith Fridays. 00;11;53;01 - 00;11;58;08 And we've we've grown so much in large part due to the efforts that she's done. 00;11;58;08 - 00;12;00;13 And, the guidance of doctor Arnethea Sutton. 00;12;00;13 - 00;12;03;11 Thank you so much Rudene. 00;12;03;11 - 00;12;06;11 It is such a gift to get to do this work every day. 00;12;06;13 - 00;12;10;16 The person and pastor for the last 20 years, whether it's been full time 00;12;10;16 - 00;12;16;10 ministry or by vocational ministry and the love for people, just continues 00;12;16;10 - 00;12;20;03 as this work through the Massey Cancer Center, and Facts and Faith Fridays. 00;12;20;18 - 00;12;23;26 So I get to be a pastor and love on people. 00;12;23;26 - 00;12;28;12 Connect with clergy from all walks of faith and practice 00;12;28;12 - 00;12;29;22 every single day, 00;12;29;22 - 00;12;32;22 and meeting them where they're at and making sure they know about the facts 00;12;32;22 - 00;12;35;23 and faith conversations that we're having for clergy 00;12;35;23 - 00;12;38;22 and that we're having for the general public. 00;12;38;29 - 00;12;40;27 And I want to hear from them like, what are 00;12;40;27 - 00;12;44;20 what are the issues in your congregations that you want to learn more about? 00;12;44;20 - 00;12;49;05 Or how can we help to empower you and encourage you with this information 00;12;49;05 - 00;12;53;25 so that you can be that trusted voice in your community and it's such a gift. 00;12;53;25 - 00;12;59;11 You know, we we want to model for other, programs in Virginia, but nationwide, 00;12;59;12 - 00;13;03;00 you know, we want to say to those clergy and those, pastors, you know, 00;13;03;11 - 00;13;04;26 what are the concerns in your community? 00;13;04;26 - 00;13;09;21 And how can you create a network of clergy and of people who love the community? 00;13;09;21 - 00;13;12;20 Well, to do this work, it's such a gift. 00;13;12;24 - 00;13;16;12 And, you know, we mentioned it, it evolved into an overall 00;13;16;12 - 00;13;18;07 wellness and educational program. 00;13;18;07 - 00;13;21;17 We focus on mental health, we focus on health overall. 00;13;21;17 - 00;13;25;13 And we really want to talk about what does it mean to honor our mind, 00;13;25;20 - 00;13;29;12 body and spirit and how does our faith practice impact that work? 00;13;29;24 - 00;13;33;22 Because we all know that culturally and the practice of faith, 00;13;34;00 - 00;13;36;24 it really impacts how we make decisions about our health. 00;13;36;24 - 00;13;39;12 And there's a lot that we can learn from each other. 00;13;39;12 - 00;13;43;16 I was raised in a rural area and, with deep roots 00;13;43;18 - 00;13;46;24 that have some deep roots with music and culture and church 00;13;46;24 - 00;13;50;03 and faith and all of those things have impacted the person that I am. 00;13;50;03 - 00;13;53;10 And I know that we all come and bring those things to the table when, 00;13;53;10 - 00;13;55;05 when we're, coming together. 00;13;55;05 - 00;13;58;22 But the thing I'm most proud of is to work alongside each of you. 00;13;59;16 - 00;14;02;14 Sister Rudene, and Doctor Winn and Doctor Sutton. 00;14;02;14 - 00;14;05;14 It is such a gift to get to come to work every day 00;14;05;14 - 00;14;08;07 and just think about how I can bring 00;14;08;07 - 00;14;11;07 my best self to curate these conversations for our community 00;14;11;07 - 00;14;13;14 and just make sure that we're listening 00;14;13;14 - 00;14;15;20 and that we're a voice for our community members. 00;14;15;20 - 00;14;18;28 Yes. I'm just going to say, Reverend Rachel is very humble. 00;14;18;29 - 00;14;22;25 She's incredibly humble, and I need her to kind of shine 00;14;22;25 - 00;14;26;20 a light on some work that she did just recently in helping coordinate, 00;14;27;03 - 00;14;31;24 the first of its kind event at First Baptist. 00;14;32;10 - 00;14;34;06 You want to talk about that? 00;14;35;12 - 00;14;36;06 Oh, I'd love to. 00;14;36;06 - 00;14;39;06 The multi cancer detection unit. 00;14;39;27 - 00;14;41;07 Absolutely. 00;14;41;07 - 00;14;44;20 So we asked our, folks and faith planning team 00;14;45;02 - 00;14;48;11 if there was a church parking lot that we could bring this 00;14;49;12 - 00;14;53;00 like state of the art, innovative cancer 00;14;53;00 - 00;14;57;04 screening blood draw to their parking lot and bring it to the community. 00;14;57;12 - 00;15;01;13 And, First Baptist Church of South Richmond, Doctor Cheryl Ivey Green. 00;15;01;20 - 00;15;04;27 She is a good friend and an incredible community partner. 00;15;04;27 - 00;15;08;14 And she said, my parking lot is open, available. 00;15;08;14 - 00;15;09;17 Let's do this. 00;15;09;17 - 00;15;12;05 Let's bring this screening to our parking lot. 00;15;12;05 - 00;15;13;25 We showed up early that morning. 00;15;13;25 - 00;15;17;07 The whole team from Massey came and we put it all together, 00;15;17;07 - 00;15;21;09 and at the end of the day, we were able to screen 16 00;15;21;18 - 00;15;26;15 participants in this program so they would know whether or not their 00;15;26;15 - 00;15;31;04 the blood draw was going to tell them which cancers that, that, that, 00;15;31;24 - 00;15;36;18 that they were highly likely, to have in their body. It. 00;15;37;15 - 00;15;38;17 And this was it. 00;15;38;17 - 00;15;39;26 This is like, 00;15;39;26 - 00;15;42;29 you know, one of the things I always complain about is that usually 00;15;42;29 - 00;15;47;07 with high end innovations, it usually, when we come up with these 00;15;47;07 - 00;15;51;04 new miracle drugs and we come with these new things for early detection of cancers, 00;15;51;22 - 00;15;55;03 typically our communities are the last to ever see them. 00;15;55;08 - 00;15;56;23 Yeah. This is a champion. 00;15;56;23 - 00;15;58;11 You know, Reverend Rachel, I got to say, you 00;15;58;11 - 00;16;01;26 know, appreciate you and, you know, Sister Rudene, and our faith based leaders 00;16;02;05 - 00;16;06;19 for really having the courage of understanding that the number one group 00;16;06;26 - 00;16;11;03 that tends to die most commonly with earlier cancers, 00;16;11;10 - 00;16;15;19 earlier cancers, more aggressive cancers at younger ages, African Americans. 00;16;16;05 - 00;16;19;11 And yet, when it comes to fighting and detecting these cancers, 00;16;19;19 - 00;16;20;20 we still lag behind. 00;16;20;20 - 00;16;25;25 So this effort is to bring, for the first time, cutting edge 00;16;26;16 - 00;16;30;10 innovation that all the other folks are getting to our community. 00;16;30;10 - 00;16;33;10 And, and what it is, is it's kind of cool when you think about it. 00;16;33;13 - 00;16;36;15 You know, we used to have to go to, what would happen if, 00;16;36;15 - 00;16;39;17 and I just give a quick example, you know, there was a woman who just, 00;16;39;27 - 00;16;41;10 you know, came with a friend was like, yeah, 00;16;41;10 - 00;16;43;20 you know, you know, the power of this, too, right? 00;16;43;20 - 00;16;45;21 Came with a friend. Just like, I don't feel bad. 00;16;45;21 - 00;16;47;11 She took the blood test anyway. 00;16;47;11 - 00;16;52;15 And it's called, if if we called an early multi-cancer early detection system. 00;16;52;23 - 00;16;55;01 Interestingly enough, there were two hits. 00;16;55;01 - 00;16;59;03 She had one for breast and one for ovarian cancer. 00;16;59;03 - 00;17;01;08 And in fact, she was like, but I feel good. 00;17;01;08 - 00;17;05;24 So she did wound up getting a workout and a workout workup revealed that 00;17;05;24 - 00;17;10;25 she had breast cancer in women early, that all they had to do was a lumpectomy. 00;17;10;25 - 00;17;11;22 You know what I'm saying? So. 00;17;11;22 - 00;17;15;21 So this is a way of saying that sometimes the whole my whole goal is 00;17;15;25 - 00;17;19;05 sometimes we can't get to you, but we trying to bring the show to the road 00;17;19;05 - 00;17;22;09 so that we can have everybody share in the science that, 00;17;22;17 - 00;17;25;13 can actually change people's lives radically. 00;17;25;13 - 00;17;30;10 Doctor Winn, I want to jump in here when you talking about the detection 00;17;30;18 - 00;17;34;15 of potential multiple cancers, but doesn't it 00;17;34;15 - 00;17;39;00 give you a window, if you will, if it's if it's detected early 00;17;39;05 - 00;17;43;21 or potentially detected, that you can start treatment early for cures. 00;17;44;01 - 00;17;48;07 You know, the best treatment to get the best cures for cancers 00;17;48;16 - 00;17;52;10 is prevention screening and catching it early. 00;17;52;22 - 00;17;56;02 If you can catch it early, nine times out of ten, we can take care of that. 00;17;56;07 - 00;17;59;07 Now the good news is 20 years ago, 00;17;59;08 - 00;18;02;14 I would be saying that that was the only way we could take care of cancer. 00;18;02;24 - 00;18;05;20 But we now know that even if you have the advanced 00;18;05;20 - 00;18;09;07 breast cancer, advanced stage, breast cancer, advanced stage lung cancer, 00;18;09;15 - 00;18;13;00 we have now with biomarker testing and other things like that, the ability 00;18;13;00 - 00;18;14;18 to even take care of that. 00;18;14;18 - 00;18;18;06 But the goal is if I had to choose between late or early, 00;18;18;14 - 00;18;22;14 it's always early, which is why getting screened, seeing your doctor 00;18;22;19 - 00;18;24;05 and talking about these things is important. 00;18;24;05 - 00;18;27;20 In fact, that was just be Chadwick Boseman's wife recently, and we talked 00;18;27;20 - 00;18;31;14 about the importance of early screening and early detection and prevention. 00;18;31;14 - 00;18;34;19 And that needs to be really, I think, a mainstay 00;18;34;19 - 00;18;37;22 within the African-American in particular, even the rural community. 00;18;37;22 - 00;18;39;13 And when we talk about folks 00;18;39;13 - 00;18;43;25 under the age of 40, at first it was like 45 colonoscopy. 00;18;43;25 - 00;18;45;08 It was like 50 at one time. 00;18;45;08 - 00;18;46;26 Now it's down to 45. 00;18;46;26 - 00;18;50;12 Now more women or young ladies 00;18;50;19 - 00;18;54;19 are being detected under the age of 40 with breast cancer. 00;18;54;19 - 00;18;58;08 So if something doesn't feel right, you still should get it checked up. 00;18;58;12 - 00;19;01;20 But if not, if you don't want to go to a private facility, 00;19;01;21 - 00;19;03;09 you can always go to Massey. 00;19;03;09 - 00;19;04;11 Yes or no? Oh, absolutely. 00;19;04;11 - 00;19;09;06 And by the way, you know that we have a disturbing trend of younger 00;19;09;06 - 00;19;13;26 people, young men and women coming in with more aggressive cancers 00;19;13;26 - 00;19;17;14 at much earlier ages, and we're seeing this as a national trend. 00;19;17;22 - 00;19;19;21 We don't know what's up. We don't know why. 00;19;19;21 - 00;19;21;04 We're still trying to figure it out. 00;19;21;04 - 00;19;24;13 But again, love yourself by getting yourself checked out. 00;19;25;01 - 00;19;28;01 Love yourself by getting yourselves checked out. 00;19;28;05 - 00;19;30;04 Yes. Go ahead Rudene. 00;19;30;04 - 00;19;31;14 Yeah, I was going to say Community Clovia. 00;19;31;14 - 00;19;35;13 I'm not even sure if I've ever shared this with with you before, but, you know, 00;19;35;22 - 00;19;41;06 during our facts and faith journey, I actually, you know, felt a lot, 00;19;41;15 - 00;19;45;16 and my and my right breast, while I was just in the shower. 00;19;46;04 - 00;19;50;28 And, you know, I was, you know, I religiously got mammograms every year 00;19;50;28 - 00;19;52;03 because both my mom 00;19;52;03 - 00;19;56;04 and my grandmother, both, had were diagnosed with breast cancer. 00;19;56;14 - 00;19;59;19 They were post-menopausal, at the time, but still. 00;19;59;19 - 00;20;03;25 So I noticed something, said something to my, my doctor, 00;20;03;25 - 00;20;06;25 and she said, you know, I think you're being, you know, 00;20;07;16 - 00;20;10;10 weird about this, but you know your body better than anybody else. 00;20;10;10 - 00;20;12;05 Absolutely. Follow up. 00;20;12;05 - 00;20;15;19 He did some follow ups and, and and lo and behold, I 00;20;15;20 - 00;20;19;10 actually, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2020. 00;20;19;27 - 00;20;24;18 What's so surreal about this is that I had been playing in the cancer 00;20;24;18 - 00;20;28;25 sandbox, as I, as I call it, working with Massey, you know, 00;20;28;25 - 00;20;32;11 on the Facts and Faith Fridays initiative, you know, serving on the board. 00;20;32;11 - 00;20;32;22 Yeah. 00;20;32;22 - 00;20;37;26 And then, you know, I found that I confronted the big C myself, 00;20;38;02 - 00;20;41;28 and I can't tell you enough about how wonderful 00;20;41;28 - 00;20;45;19 VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center was in my journey. 00;20;45;19 - 00;20;49;00 I mean, literally minutes after I heard I was diagnosed, 00;20;49;06 - 00;20;52;19 I texted Doctor Winn we 00;20;52;19 - 00;20;57;00 we worked together getting a team of folks to, to support me. 00;20;57;00 - 00;20;59;04 A surgeon, you know, you know, 00;20;59;04 - 00;21;02;14 the person is going to take chemotherapy, all the things, radiation. 00;21;02;14 - 00;21;06;13 And, you know, it's just amazing that to have that level of accessibility. 00;21;07;02 - 00;21;10;13 But again, all of this happened during the Facts and Faith journey. 00;21;10;15 - 00;21;12;18 So yeah. 00;21;12;18 - 00;21;14;19 This thank you for sharing. 00;21;14;19 - 00;21;16;09 Thank you for sharing this story. 00;21;16;09 - 00;21;18;01 To save someone else's life. 00;21;18;01 - 00;21;20;27 Please contact Massey Cancer Center. 00;21;20;27 - 00;21;26;03 If you have any questions about anything, you can go to MasseyCancerCenter.org, 00;21;26;03 - 00;21;29;24 MasseyCancerCenter.org We have more good news. 00;21;29;24 - 00;21;30;27 Stay close. 00;21;30;27 - 00;21;33;28 This is Community Conversations. 00;21;34;06 - 00;21;36;16 Welcome back to Community Conversations. 00;21;36;16 - 00;21;38;07 I am Community Clo. 00;21;38;07 - 00;21;40;10 It's a currative conversation. 00;21;40;10 - 00;21;42;28 No copays, no white coats. 00;21;42;28 - 00;21;47;00 Doctor Robert Winn is director of the VCU Massey Cancer Center. 00;21;47;04 - 00;21;49;18 He's a pulmonologist and a scientist. 00;21;49;18 - 00;21;51;00 That's how I'm hanging out. 00;21;51;00 - 00;21;52;01 How are you doing, Doctor Winn? 00;21;52;01 - 00;21;54;24 When I’m with you, Oh. You go. 00;21;54;24 - 00;21;57;12 You know what? It's all good.
