00;00;55;07 - 00;00;58;04 All right, so again, if you're just joining us, we're talking about 00;00;58;04 - 00;01;02;19 the LGBTQIA+ and cancer disparities. 00;01;02;22 - 00;01;05;28 Now I'm going to start with this stat from the population. 00;01;06;02 - 00;01;10;08 An estimated 7% of US 00;01;10;08 - 00;01;16;02 population, according to the 2022 Pew Research Center survey. 00;01;16;08 - 00;01;20;02 Sexually and gender minority, SGM, 00;01;20;11 - 00;01;25;11 is all inclusive term used by the National Institute of Health, NIH. 00;01;25;12 - 00;01;27;23 So these are the populations that we're talking about. 00;01;27;23 - 00;01;29;20 Now I'm going to go into the history of this. 00;01;29;20 - 00;01;32;07 And after I do that throw this out. 00;01;32;07 - 00;01;33;29 Doctor Winn is going to step in. 00;01;33;29 - 00;01;36;29 The history of disparities among SGM. 00;01;37;03 - 00;01;41;28 There's info about cancer incidence, mortality among SGM 00;01;41;28 - 00;01;43;19 individuals is limited. 00;01;43;19 - 00;01;46;16 Now we're talking about sexual and gender minority. 00;01;46;16 - 00;01;50;17 Today's report often look to small studies for data which is really good. 00;01;50;17 - 00;01;52;19 We talked about that last month. 00;01;52;19 - 00;01;54;11 Urgent need for comprehensive data 00;01;54;11 - 00;01;58;08 collection for accurate estimate of SGM cancer burden. 00;01;58;11 - 00;01;58;26 All right. 00;01;58;26 - 00;01;59;16 So Dr. 00;01;59;16 - 00;02;02;20 Winn, I threw all of this information out, as per 00;02;02;24 - 00;02;07;17 the Pew Research Center survey of 2022, what does this all mean? 00;02;08;19 - 00;02;08;26 Yeah. 00;02;08;26 - 00;02;11;26 So so here's this up, I think, decades ago. 00;02;12;04 - 00;02;16;29 You know, we, really did not think about, my brothers 00;02;16;29 - 00;02;20;10 and sisters and others within the SGM community of getting cancers. 00;02;21;01 - 00;02;24;07 And in fact, what we now know is that the new data shows 00;02;24;19 - 00;02;27;19 that there are elements within the SGM, 00;02;27;19 - 00;02;30;19 sort of community that there increase rates of cancers. 00;02;31;07 - 00;02;35;03 In fact, you know, we have data from the, recent report 00;02;35;03 - 00;02;38;08 from the American Association of Cancer Research that actually sort of 00;02;38;08 - 00;02;42;24 says that it is a concern throughout the entire SGM community. 00;02;43;05 - 00;02;47;08 And what I think is happening is we're finally one finding the courage 00;02;47;08 - 00;02;48;07 to talk about it. 00;02;48;07 - 00;02;53;07 And that beyond the cancers associated with HIV Aids, that the other thing 00;02;53;08 - 00;02;58;01 that lung cancer increase rates of liver cancer or cervical cancer, 00;02;58;01 - 00;03;01;20 these types of deals that we also have to pay attention to. 00;03;01;28 - 00;03;04;28 And what I love about having James on today 00;03;04;28 - 00;03;07;24 is that we really are trying to make sure 00;03;07;24 - 00;03;11;26 that there isn't these invisible cancers in our communities anymore, 00;03;12;02 - 00;03;16;15 that we're talking that we are not actually happy until everyone 00;03;16;15 - 00;03;20;15 benefits from the science, the molecules that become miracle medicines. 00;03;20;21 - 00;03;23;16 And particularly this is a true within the SGM community. 00;03;23;16 - 00;03;25;24 Now, James, I want you to come on in. 00;03;25;24 - 00;03;29;02 I know you want to come from the social perspective of all of this. 00;03;29;05 - 00;03;32;27 What exactly does this research mean to you 00;03;33;05 - 00;03;37;18 and the LGBTQIA+ population? 00;03;38;04 - 00;03;40;20 Well, I think first and foremost, this research shows us, 00;03;40;20 - 00;03;43;15 what we don't know, right? I think it's highlighting, 00;03;45;01 - 00;03;45;18 some some 00;03;45;18 - 00;03;49;28 holes in the data that we have, in terms of how we can, 00;03;49;28 - 00;03;53;18 better address cancer within the, SGM communities. 00;03;54;06 - 00;03;57;17 I think that there are a lot of reasons why there are some disparities 00;03;57;17 - 00;03;58;29 here, though. 00;03;58;29 - 00;04;02;04 I think a lot of it has to do with trust of the medical system, 00;04;02;04 - 00;04;06;29 whether people are treated, are treated, authentically. 00;04;06;29 - 00;04;09;29 And whether there is inclusion within the medical system 00;04;10;05 - 00;04;13;19 for when people show up, whether they might be a transgender person, 00;04;14;01 - 00;04;18;03 whether they might be an LGBT, gay or lesbian or bisexual person, 00;04;18;12 - 00;04;21;25 and what kind of treatment they're going to receive when they show up 00;04;21;25 - 00;04;25;24 and whether their provider is going to be affirming of, of their identities. 00;04;25;29 - 00;04;29;11 And I think that's a big factor in why people may not seek, 00;04;29;17 - 00;04;33;16 initial care and or preventative care or screening. 00;04;33;27 - 00;04;37;16 But I think it also impacts, how people ultimately get treated 00;04;37;16 - 00;04;39;03 if there is a cancer diagnosis. 00;04;39;03 - 00;04;42;27 And and, and so I think there are, there are a lot of, 00;04;42;27 - 00;04;46;22 barriers and a lot of opportunities for us to do better in those ways. 00;04;47;17 - 00;04;50;27 And that's why we have Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center 00;04;51;01 - 00;04;54;08 and, and Doctor Winn, just having you here and James Milner as well. 00;04;54;09 - 00;04;56;15 Doctor Winn, you want to jump in here? 00;04;56;15 - 00;04;56;21 Yeah. 00;04;56;21 - 00;05;01;15 I think it's important to note that within the SGM community, 00;05;01;15 - 00;05;05;13 we tend to still not actually be creative in the context 00;05;05;13 - 00;05;07;10 of our connectedness to the community. Right? 00;05;07;10 - 00;05;12;00 So we still have people who come in to our offices afraid, right. 00;05;12;01 - 00;05;13;26 Afraid to tell us about things. 00;05;13;26 - 00;05;15;10 And I think that one of the things 00;05;15;10 - 00;05;18;28 we are learning is that we have to actually create the safe spaces 00;05;19;04 - 00;05;23;15 so that we can talk about the entire person in the context of, 00;05;23;21 - 00;05;24;23 in some cases, right. 00;05;24;23 - 00;05;29;04 In fact, you know, we have these old, or old ideas 00;05;29;13 - 00;05;32;23 that, you know, for, you know, people within SGM they don't get cancer. 00;05;32;26 - 00;05;34;22 They do get cancer. Yeah. 00;05;34;22 - 00;05;37;04 That's what the new literature is sort of saying. 00;05;37;04 - 00;05;40;22 And in fact, for example, we know that, bisexual 00;05;40;22 - 00;05;43;21 women are at higher rates of getting breast cancer. 00;05;43;21 - 00;05;45;11 So we're still trying to figure out why 00;05;45;11 - 00;05;47;11 then, you know, someone who's heteronormative. 00;05;47;11 - 00;05;51;17 We know that, there are certain cancers within the transgender community 00;05;51;17 - 00;05;53;05 that are actually increased. 00;05;53;05 - 00;05;56;21 And so that really is not being able can you imagine 00;05;56;25 - 00;05;59;26 being able to go to your doctor and not feeling comfortable 00;05;59;26 - 00;06;01;23 with talking about your whole self? 00;06;01;23 - 00;06;04;23 This is why I think that this is an important conversation, because 00;06;05;09 - 00;06;08;09 cancer doesn't care what community it impacts. 00;06;08;11 - 00;06;09;18 It impacts all of us. 00;06;09;18 - 00;06;12;16 Thank you for that, Doctor Winn. 00;06;12;16 - 00;06;17;01 Disparities included in the 2024 American Association for Cancer Research 00;06;17;01 - 00;06;20;27 disparities progress report and and stop me Doctor 00;06;20;27 - 00;06;22;29 Winn if you would like to expound on any of these. 00;06;22;29 - 00;06;28;09 Breast cancer higher among sexual minority women versus heterosexual women. 00;06;28;27 - 00;06;32;18 Late stage lung cancer and that's a really high number, 00;06;32;18 - 00;06;39;00 76% higher among transgender individuals versus cisgender. 00;06;39;04 - 00;06;41;29 So what is the science saying when it comes to this Doctor Winn? 00;06;41;29 - 00;06;44;29 When I think the science is saying we got more to learn. 00;06;45;05 - 00;06;47;13 I think cases actually on point. 00;06;47;13 - 00;06;51;00 And for the for the record, I think that when we think about SGM 00;06;51;00 - 00;06;53;08 communities, there’s lots of intersectionality, right? 00;06;53;08 - 00;06;55;22 There are a lot of, you know, African-Americans, right? 00;06;55;22 - 00;06;58;06 That could be lesbian and gay, etcetera, etcetera. Right. 00;06;58;06 - 00;07;01;21 So the reality is we need to really start thinking about this, 00;07;02;00 - 00;07;04;29 in the context of the wholeness 00;07;04;29 - 00;07;08;22 of our SGM community, because it matters. 00;07;08;28 - 00;07;10;08 If we can get this right 00;07;10;08 - 00;07;13;07 and start doing the right research and start looking at the right data. 00;07;13;09 - 00;07;16;17 All I care about is a cancer doc is that we can save more lives. 00;07;16;28 - 00;07;19;28 Yeah I was just going to say I really want to, on 00;07;19;28 - 00;07;22;26 this commend Doctor Winn and the folks at Massey Cancer Center. 00;07;22;26 - 00;07;25;17 Oh absolutely. About how they're approaching this issue. 00;07;25;17 - 00;07;30;07 Because for all the reasons that the Doctor Winn just identified, 00;07;30;07 - 00;07;33;14 they're doing all the right things to help build trust, 00;07;33;14 - 00;07;36;09 which I think is really the foundation of this conversation. 00;07;36;09 - 00;07;37;22 It's about trust. 00;07;37;22 - 00;07;40;25 And they are partnering with organizations like Virginia Pride, 00;07;40;25 - 00;07;45;18 like Black Pride RVA, to build relationships. 00;07;45;18 - 00;07;50;02 And connections within their communities that they know they need to serve better 00;07;50;02 - 00;07;54;14 and that they want to be able to as I, as as, Doctor Winn said, that 00;07;54;14 - 00;07;57;23 show up as their full self when they come in for screening, 00;07;57;23 - 00;07;59;01 when they come in for treatment. 00;07;59;01 - 00;08;03;00 And I think, you know, this is a model that other cancer centers 00;08;03;01 - 00;08;07;08 and everyone in the, in the cancer community should be emulating. 00;08;07;23 - 00;08;10;20 Well, James, I do know what you saying, you know. 00;08;10;20 - 00;08;11;09 But I brag or, 00;08;11;09 - 00;08;14;23 you know, it's easy to be a good partner when you got great partners. 00;08;15;11 - 00;08;19;01 Through Virginia Pride and in fact, always, 00;08;19;06 - 00;08;24;11 you know, advocating always, you know, sort of open to sort of engaging. 00;08;24;11 - 00;08;29;19 And, man, I got to give props to you from the very first time I came into town. 00;08;29;29 - 00;08;33;22 You've been very open and supportive of, you know, sort of saying, hey, 00;08;33;27 - 00;08;34;21 I want to help. 00;08;34;21 - 00;08;38;03 And you're being there to say, well, here's how we can help each other 00;08;38;03 - 00;08;38;16 together. 00;08;38;16 - 00;08;42;15 So James, I gotta give Virginia Pride like a shout out, I just do. 00;08;43;04 - 00;08;43;15 Yeah. 00;08;43;15 - 00;08;45;13 James Milner, we got to give you a shout out 00;08;45;13 - 00;08;48;02 for Virginia Pride in being the director over there. 00;08;48;02 - 00;08;50;06 We thank you so much for all you do. 00;08;50;06 - 00;08;54;26 And of course we always in a win win situation James when we got Doctor Winn. 00;08;55;12 - 00;08;58;06 So I want to get through a few more of these disparities 00;08;58;06 - 00;08;59;19 so we can talk about the causes. 00;08;59;19 - 00;09;01;14 And we can do a call to action. 00;09;01;14 - 00;09;05;02 Prostate cancer higher risk among gay bisexual men. 00;09;05;13 - 00;09;10;29 Prostate cancer 60% lower incidence among transgender women, 00;09;11;01 - 00;09;15;22 but double mortality rate HPV associated with anal cancer. 00;09;15;26 - 00;09;20;28 Higher risk among men who have sex with men versus heterosexual 40 times higher 00;09;20;28 - 00;09;24;00 among those who are HIV positive, 20 times 00;09;24;00 - 00;09;27;12 higher among those who are HIV negative. 00;09;27;17 - 00;09;31;22 Now, Doctor Winn and James, I'm pretty sure you're familiar with this. 00;09;31;24 - 00;09;33;28 Let's talk about the disparity causes. 00;09;33;28 - 00;09;35;04 Let's get to the root. 00;09;35;04 - 00;09;39;06 You know, Sister Clo, first and really trying to bring information 00;09;39;06 - 00;09;43;13 to all of our community and what I really love about what you do 00;09;43;21 - 00;09;49;00 is that, you really have been out there with us at the Massey Cancer Center 00;09;49;00 - 00;09;53;17 talking literally about, making sure that we raise the awareness 00;09;53;17 - 00;09;57;21 and raise the the level of all of us about cancer. 00;09;57;21 - 00;09;59;12 So appreciate you, Sis. 00;09;59;12 - 00;10;01;05 Oh man, thank you, Doctor Winn. 00;10;01;05 - 00;10;02;24 So we've talked about. 00;10;02;24 - 00;10;06;10 Something here because, you know, James is actually out there, I mean, listen. 00;10;07;01 - 00;10;07;22 That's what you got to. 00;10;07;22 - 00;10;09;22 Out here trying to talk about doing advocation. 00;10;09;22 - 00;10;10;07 Yeah. 00;10;10;07 - 00;10;13;16 Other people who are advocates, I mean to the next level. 00;10;13;16 - 00;10;15;13 So I am on with two amazing people. 00;10;15;13 - 00;10;17;02 So, you know, I'm good. Please. 00;10;40;16 - 00;10;44;09 But but you know, like covering a topic around SGM Yeah. 00;10;44;10 - 00;10;47;28 You know, I would dare say that many cancer centers around the country, 00;10;47;28 - 00;10;51;19 which has 72 designated cancer centers and many, many more across the country, 00;10;52;08 - 00;10;53;27 this topic doesn't even come up. 00;10;53;27 - 00;10;57;14 No. You know, and what I really want to thank both of you guys 00;10;57;15 - 00;11;00;17 for bringing the attention that there is a community 00;11;00;20 - 00;11;04;08 of people who get cancer that we need to pay more attention to. 00;11;04;08 - 00;11;06;27 And the reality is, one size does not fit all. 00;11;06;27 - 00;11;10;17 So the amount of research I have to I'm laughing now, but it wasn't 00;11;10;17 - 00;11;11;23 that much of a laughing matter. 00;11;11;23 - 00;11;15;06 In 2020, when we first published the first, AACR 00;11;15;06 - 00;11;18;11 report on health disparities, the American Associate Cancer Research. 00;11;18;11 - 00;11;23;18 Yeah, we had so little data in the SGM community and in our rural communities. 00;11;23;18 - 00;11;25;07 You know what we decided to do? 00;11;25;07 - 00;11;26;23 We didn't publish anything about it. 00;11;26;23 - 00;11;28;00 We just mentioned it. 00;11;28;00 - 00;11;31;23 In 2024, however, this report is expanded. 00;11;31;27 - 00;11;35;12 And so what I'm saying to you that as we expand our minds, 00;11;35;12 - 00;11;39;05 we expand the possibilities of actually having the science benefit everyone. 00;11;39;05 - 00;11;43;12 And that's, again, you can't do that without people bringing awareness to it. 00;11;43;12 - 00;11;47;08 So again, I'm really in, great awe and respect to you both. Oh, 00;11;47;08 - 00;11;48;08 thank you so much. 00;11;48;08 - 00;11;53;28 And when we talk about the LGBTQIA+ communities, guess what? 00;11;54;05 - 00;11;55;16 They are family members. 00;11;56;15 - 00;11;58;11 Those are someone's children. 00;11;58;11 - 00;11;59;06 Exactly. 00;11;59;06 - 00;12;01;09 So we talked about the cancer disparities. 00;12;01;09 - 00;12;02;25 We went over the numbers. 00;12;02;25 - 00;12;06;02 Now we're going to talk about the root causes of the disparities. 00;12;06;02 - 00;12;10;05 According to the American Cancer Society for Cancer Research, disparities 00;12;10;05 - 00;12;11;05 Progress report. 00;12;11;05 - 00;12;12;27 And I'll run through these really quick. 00;12;12;27 - 00;12;13;13 And, James, 00;12;13;13 - 00;12;16;05 I want you to do some comments because we got some good news on the way. 00;12;16;05 - 00;12;20;12 But the call to action, transgender questions about interplay 00;12;20;13 - 00;12;24;05 between hormone therapy, likelihood of developing cancer, 00;12;24;18 - 00;12;27;14 SGM, higher prevalence of certain risk 00;12;27;14 - 00;12;30;24 factors, tobacco alcohol use, 00;12;31;04 - 00;12;33;29 higher rates of HPV, HIV 00;12;33;29 - 00;12;37;26 infections, lower rates of cancer screening, health care workers 00;12;37;26 - 00;12;41;18 not as educated about SGM health needs and discrimination 00;12;41;22 - 00;12;43;07 in the health care settings. 00;12;43;07 - 00;12;45;24 And as you did mention it, James, I can see it here. 00;12;45;24 - 00;12;49;27 When we look at the root causes, folks are feeling afraid to go to the doctor. 00;12;50;06 - 00;12;53;20 Well, I mean, I think that that's that's definitely a big piece of it. 00;12;53;27 - 00;12;58;23 And it's also because I don't know that that that SGM folks, people in the SGM 00;12;58;23 - 00;13;03;06 community always see themselves fully represented and in, 00;13;03;13 - 00;13;07;03 in the health care system, whether it be through marketing, whether 00;13;07;03 - 00;13;10;03 it be through clinical trial recruitment, whether it be through, 00;13;10;06 - 00;13;13;19 you know, prevention campaign or whatever. 00;13;13;26 - 00;13;17;04 And we, you know, look, let's look at the, at HPV, for example. 00;13;17;04 - 00;13;18;09 And we know that that is 00;13;18;09 - 00;13;22;23 that there is a higher rate of, of that among, gay and bisexual men. 00;13;22;23 - 00;13;25;09 And there is among heterosexual men. 00;13;25;09 - 00;13;27;25 And, you know, when the research was first done 00;13;27;25 - 00;13;31;21 and when those clinical trials were first, were first started, to develop 00;13;31;21 - 00;13;36;04 the HPV vaccine, I don't know that there was really intentionality around, 00;13;36;04 - 00;13;41;23 including, gay and bisexual men in those in that research. 00;13;41;23 - 00;13;47;24 And there certainly isn't, intentionality around including gay and bisexual men 00;13;47;24 - 00;13;51;10 in marketing of that vaccine, as a preventative measure. 00;13;51;10 - 00;13;55;15 So, and, you know, because sometimes this can be an uncomfortable topic. 00;13;55;15 - 00;13;58;00 And I think that, you know, pharmaceutical companies 00;13;58;00 - 00;14;01;03 are sometimes reticent to wade into those things. 00;14;01;04 - 00;14;06;05 I think that, even health care providers are sometimes uncomfortable 00;14;06;05 - 00;14;07;16 having those conversations. 00;14;07;16 - 00;14;11;14 And, you know, those are those are the types of barriers that we 00;14;11;14 - 00;14;16;10 really need to work on breaking down because, you know, HPV is preventable. 00;14;16;10 - 00;14;20;11 Now. And, and, and, but a lot of gay and bisexual men 00;14;20;11 - 00;14;25;03 don't even understand their risk factors for it, or that a vaccine is available 00;14;25;03 - 00;14;28;15 and that they are eligible for a vaccine to be for it to be prevented. 00;14;28;21 - 00;14;31;24 VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. 00;14;32;04 - 00;14;35;01 They've been doing the research, talking about it, and Doctor 00;14;35;01 - 00;14;40;20 Winn is not he he is going to end this this cancer disparity on all spectrums. 00;14;40;25 - 00;14;41;26 And so one of the things 00;14;41;26 - 00;14;44;26 that I really hope that we're going to do beyond even this, 00;14;45;07 - 00;14;48;23 you know, this show is to be able to have a recurrent theme 00;14;48;23 - 00;14;51;10 and hopefully James and others wil come back, 00;14;51;10 - 00;14;54;01 to make sure that we're raising the awareness 00;14;54;01 - 00;14;58;15 that within the SGM community, there are increasing rates of cancers 00;14;58;21 - 00;15;01;07 and as James, put an exclamation point on that, 00;15;01;07 - 00;15;03;03 there are cancers that really shouldn't be. 00;15;03;03 - 00;15;05;25 Head and neck cancers, other cancers. Right. 00;15;05;25 - 00;15;10;20 You know, rectal cancer and all the things that could be prevented. 00;15;11;01 - 00;15;12;04 And we're not. 00;15;12;04 - 00;15;15;01 That's why I think that this is an important conversation today. 00;15;15;01 - 00;15;16;16 And you know something, James? 00;15;16;16 - 00;15;17;17 When we talk about health 00;15;17;17 - 00;15;20;26 care workers and providers, if they are not trained on that, 00;15;21;02 - 00;15;25;01 and I don't know if we have like support groups that we can go in to 00;15;25;01 - 00;15;28;01 our health care facilities to just understand. 00;15;28;03 - 00;15;30;26 Because if you don't know, you don't know. James. 00;15;30;26 - 00;15;33;20 So if someone is transgender, 00;15;33;20 - 00;15;37;17 right, do we, when we address them the way they want to be addressed. 00;15;37;24 - 00;15;41;09 But then we might look at prostate cancer or breast cancer. 00;15;41;10 - 00;15;44;25 So how do we approach that conversation with the patient. 00;15;45;14 - 00;15;47;23 Well, I think that's a really key part of this. 00;15;47;23 - 00;15;51;04 It's how do you how do you, start a conversation? 00;15;51;04 - 00;15;54;25 How do you create a safe space for a conversation to occur? 00;15;55;05 - 00;15;59;00 How do you train health care providers so that they can pick up on cues? 00;15;59;00 - 00;16;04;08 Even if somebody isn't, it doesn't come in and identify, outwardly 00;16;04;08 - 00;16;08;02 and say that I am transgender or say that I am gay or lesbian or bisexual. 00;16;08;14 - 00;16;10;20 What are other cues that you can pick up? 00;16;10;20 - 00;16;13;29 How can you create an environment in which they feel safe 00;16;13;29 - 00;16;15;19 revealing that information? 00;16;15;19 - 00;16;17;26 What are the what are the intake forms look like? 00;16;17;26 - 00;16;20;03 What information you collecting there? 00;16;20;03 - 00;16;21;24 And then how do you ensure that 00;16;21;24 - 00;16;25;19 that information is going to be protected if people aren't out, for example? 00;16;25;19 - 00;16;27;19 And, you know, those are simple. 00;16;27;19 - 00;16;31;29 I mean, not simple, but those are concrete steps that we can take. 00;16;31;29 - 00;16;35;01 And that's a matter of screening that doesn't require, 00;16;35;10 - 00;16;37;01 you know, medical research, 00;16;37;01 - 00;16;41;02 that doesn't require laboratories, that doesn't require all of that. 00;16;41;02 - 00;16;43;11 That's just a matter of creating a safe space. 00;16;43;11 - 00;16;49;11 And, and, and empowering health care providers, to initiate a conversation 00;16;49;11 - 00;16;54;24 and to communicate, whether overtly or or or not. 00;16;54;24 - 00;16;58;26 So that, you know, that they, that they are a safe person with which 00;16;58;26 - 00;17;02;28 a person can have a conversation about their identity and who they are. 00;17;03;07 - 00;17;04;25 James, thank you so much for that. 00;17;04;25 - 00;17;08;23 And and that's more community outreach, as you said, hey, we don't need to 00;17;08;29 - 00;17;09;27 make it a law. 00;17;09;27 - 00;17;11;26 These are just policies that we can change. 00;17;11;26 - 00;17;14;08 We can get together in a group and make these things happen. 00;17;14;08 - 00;17;17;25 For folks who are just joining us, we are talking about cancer disparities 00;17;18;01 - 00;17;22;04 in the LGBTQIA+ communities. 00;17;22;08 - 00;17;26;26 What can we do collectively to help this community? 00;19;15;22 - 00;19;16;07 And we 00;19;16;07 - 00;19;19;10 I was just thinking about Doctor Fauci, and I was thinking about back in the day 00;19;19;10 - 00;19;24;06 when I was a young doctor, in the context where you know, HIV Aids was coming 00;19;24;12 - 00;19;29;17 and we had a group, called Act Up, right, AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power. 00;19;29;21 - 00;19;33;08 And I always thought about that whole thing about not being victims, 00;19;33;12 - 00;19;36;07 but that we were unleashing power as a community. 00;19;36;07 - 00;19;40;06 I say today that we need to take that same ethos 00;19;40;11 - 00;19;45;04 in unleashing our power as a community, that we can make change, and we will. 00;19;45;13 - 00;19;50;03 One team, One community, one big cancer fight, and we win. 00;19;50;13 - 00;19;51;06 All right. 00;19;51;06 - 00;19;55;09 Doctor Robert Winn is director of the VCU Massey 00;19;55;09 - 00;19;59;21 Comprehensive Cancer Center, and James Milner is Director over at Virginia Pride. 00;19;59;21 - 00;20;02;08 God bless you.
