It's 00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:45.200 2 a .m. in the morning. I don't know whether 00:01:45.200 --> 00:01:49.140 I'm awake or I'm asleep. All I know is I can 00:01:49.140 --> 00:01:52.099 look over and see my wife in the bed, and I know 00:01:52.099 --> 00:01:55.439 I can't move any part of my body. And I'm thinking, 00:01:56.200 --> 00:01:58.540 I must have a rare disease because this is really, 00:01:58.599 --> 00:02:00.780 really weird because I can't move my hands, I 00:02:00.780 --> 00:02:02.700 can't move anything, but I can move my eyes and 00:02:02.700 --> 00:02:05.939 I can see my wife. And I don't know if 00:02:29.069 --> 00:02:31.310 you ever remember as a kid when someone, when 00:02:31.310 --> 00:02:32.889 you were at a pool and they were dunking you 00:02:32.889 --> 00:02:35.250 and they held you under, and they held you under 00:02:35.250 --> 00:02:37.810 and you were sure, you can't get your breath, 00:02:37.930 --> 00:02:40.330 you can't get your breath. And that's what it 00:02:40.330 --> 00:02:43.669 felt like. And I literally remember in my mind, 00:02:43.729 --> 00:02:47.650 help Jesus, help Jesus, help, help, help. And 00:02:47.650 --> 00:02:51.039 I just thought. How can you drown or die in your 00:02:51.039 --> 00:02:54.199 bed and not be able to move your body? And then 00:02:54.199 --> 00:02:56.479 just at the last minute before I kind of passed 00:02:56.479 --> 00:03:01.259 out from not getting my breath, and then I sat 00:03:01.259 --> 00:03:04.580 up in bed and I was literally soaking wet. And 00:03:04.580 --> 00:03:06.939 if you've ever seen me play basketball, I mean, 00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:09.580 when I play, I mean, I was drenched and the bed 00:03:09.580 --> 00:03:12.599 was drenched and my wife was asleep over here. 00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:15.659 And there's like evil in the room, like never 00:03:15.659 --> 00:03:18.729 in the hairs on the back of my neck. And I'm 00:03:18.729 --> 00:03:22.710 wondering, what is happening? And I'm terrified. 00:03:23.590 --> 00:03:27.509 What do you do when some very unusual things 00:03:27.509 --> 00:03:30.550 happen? First of all, you need to understand 00:03:30.550 --> 00:03:33.189 there's four facts you need to know. And this 00:03:33.189 --> 00:03:36.050 is the baseline. Fact number one, God has objectively 00:03:36.050 --> 00:03:39.689 defeated Satan and his agenda. He has delivered 00:03:39.689 --> 00:03:41.909 us from sin's penalty, power, and ultimately 00:03:41.909 --> 00:03:45.699 will deliver us from sin's presence. In the interim, 00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:48.819 we're involved in a guerrilla warfare with demonic 00:03:48.819 --> 00:03:52.719 forces. Fact number one. Fact number two. As 00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:54.560 believers, we have been transferred from the 00:03:54.560 --> 00:03:56.719 kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light with 00:03:56.719 --> 00:04:00.180 all the rights, privileges, and position of being 00:04:00.180 --> 00:04:04.080 a child of God and what that entails. Fact number 00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:06.620 three. The spiritual battle that we fight involves 00:04:06.620 --> 00:04:10.659 our responsibility on our part to put on the 00:04:10.659 --> 00:04:13.000 spiritual protection God has provided for us. 00:04:13.469 --> 00:04:16.990 We can and we will resist the enemy's attempts 00:04:16.990 --> 00:04:22.389 to deceive, accuse, and cast out when we stand 00:04:22.389 --> 00:04:25.550 firm by, number one, being honest with God, ourselves, 00:04:25.750 --> 00:04:28.649 and others as a prerequisite to spiritual battle. 00:04:28.990 --> 00:04:31.009 And we learned what? It's the belt of truth. 00:04:31.230 --> 00:04:33.670 Number two, responding to the truth that God 00:04:33.670 --> 00:04:36.329 shows us about his will for our lives or living 00:04:36.329 --> 00:04:38.850 righteously. the breastplate of righteousness. 00:04:39.009 --> 00:04:41.889 And number three, a clear understanding and a 00:04:41.889 --> 00:04:44.029 readily sharing of the gospel, the message of 00:04:44.029 --> 00:04:47.370 grace. Our feet shod with the gospel. Now get 00:04:47.370 --> 00:04:49.889 this, and please, fact number four is very important. 00:04:50.189 --> 00:04:53.709 The great majority of spiritual warfare never 00:04:53.709 --> 00:04:57.509 need go beyond the regular practice of living 00:04:57.509 --> 00:05:00.670 out your position in Christ by faith. Our practice 00:05:00.670 --> 00:05:03.290 of Paul's metaphor of the spiritual armor protects 00:05:03.290 --> 00:05:06.730 us from Satan's ongoing attempts to break our 00:05:06.730 --> 00:05:09.509 fellowship with Jesus, and as a result, greatly 00:05:09.509 --> 00:05:16.810 minimizes any impact by the enemy. And now, however, 00:05:16.990 --> 00:05:22.189 there are times when we must move beyond standing 00:05:22.189 --> 00:05:26.670 firm, and here's the key word, engage the enemy 00:05:26.670 --> 00:05:32.600 in actual combat. There are times that are very 00:05:32.600 --> 00:05:35.639 predictable when it will go from you have a great 00:05:35.639 --> 00:05:38.939 defense, you're not being deceived, you're walking 00:05:38.939 --> 00:05:42.180 with God, and there's some times when frontal 00:05:42.180 --> 00:05:46.180 attack is likely to happen. Five examples. Number 00:05:46.180 --> 00:05:49.000 one, when you're taking significant steps of 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:52.480 faith for spiritual growth. Second, when we're 00:05:52.480 --> 00:05:55.339 invading enemy territory. The third time is when 00:05:55.339 --> 00:05:58.189 you're exposing him for who he really is. We 00:05:58.189 --> 00:06:00.589 as a staff knew we were going to teach on this. 00:06:00.689 --> 00:06:03.589 We started a few weeks ago, and we really upped 00:06:03.589 --> 00:06:05.970 our prayer and intercession, knowing this was 00:06:05.970 --> 00:06:08.089 going to happen. Fourth is when we repent or 00:06:08.089 --> 00:06:10.850 make a clean break with the world or a long -held 00:06:10.850 --> 00:06:14.329 sin pattern or unholy relationship. And then 00:06:14.329 --> 00:06:16.410 finally, when God is preparing us individually 00:06:16.410 --> 00:06:19.930 or corporately for a great work for His glory. 00:06:20.949 --> 00:06:23.589 You know, you read Nehemiah, and as Nehemiah 00:06:23.589 --> 00:06:28.790 begins to rebuild the wall, A revival is going 00:06:28.790 --> 00:06:30.689 to take place, and Ezra's going to come in, and 00:06:30.689 --> 00:06:33.889 God's going to turn all of history around with 00:06:33.889 --> 00:06:36.990 this business guy. And chapters 1, 2, and 3 are 00:06:36.990 --> 00:06:39.529 pretty exciting, but chapters 4, 5, and 6 are 00:06:39.529 --> 00:06:42.569 about opposition. And he gets general opposition, 00:06:42.790 --> 00:06:44.810 and he gets personal opposition, then there's 00:06:44.810 --> 00:06:48.029 an assassination on him. Jesus is ready to launch 00:06:48.029 --> 00:06:50.629 his ministry. He's ready to be the savior of 00:06:50.629 --> 00:06:53.009 the world and begin his formal teaching ministry. 00:06:53.129 --> 00:06:56.709 And what happens? He's led by the Holy Spirit 00:06:56.709 --> 00:06:59.410 into the wilderness and he's tempted by the enemy, 00:06:59.490 --> 00:07:03.589 right? So those are times when we can expect. 00:07:03.769 --> 00:07:06.870 The question is, once you're wearing your spiritual 00:07:06.870 --> 00:07:09.829 armor, yet find yourself bombarded by spiritual 00:07:09.829 --> 00:07:14.069 opposition, how do you engage the enemy and win 00:07:14.069 --> 00:07:18.629 the battle? Well, we know that our battle is 00:07:18.629 --> 00:07:20.149 not against flesh and blood, but it's against 00:07:20.149 --> 00:07:22.589 the rulers, the powers, the world forces, the 00:07:22.589 --> 00:07:28.459 spiritual darkness, right? Therefore, stand firm 00:07:28.459 --> 00:07:33.399 in the Lord. Right? Put on the full armor of 00:07:33.399 --> 00:07:37.800 God. And having what? Girded your loins with 00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:40.720 truth. Having put on the breastplate of righteousness. 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:44.639 And having had your feet shod with the gospel. 00:07:45.300 --> 00:07:49.480 In addition, verse 16, to all, taking up the 00:07:49.480 --> 00:07:51.939 shield of faith, which you will be able to extinguish 00:07:51.939 --> 00:07:54.410 all the flaming missiles of the evil one. and 00:07:54.410 --> 00:07:56.889 take the helmet of salvation and the sword of 00:07:56.889 --> 00:07:59.930 the spirit, which is the word of God. So how 00:07:59.930 --> 00:08:01.850 you engage that is I would like to talk about 00:08:01.850 --> 00:08:05.610 these three armor pieces that we have that will 00:08:05.610 --> 00:08:09.850 teach us how to engage in spiritual battle and 00:08:09.850 --> 00:08:13.670 win. Taking up the shield of faith. Paul gives 00:08:13.670 --> 00:08:18.250 us this metaphor, and the faith here is the absolute 00:08:18.250 --> 00:08:21.290 confidence in God, his promises, his power, and 00:08:21.290 --> 00:08:25.120 his program for our lives. Although rooted in 00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:27.899 the objective reality of the gospel and our new 00:08:27.899 --> 00:08:31.019 standing with God, justification, in other words, 00:08:31.019 --> 00:08:34.320 saving faith, this faith refers to our present 00:08:34.320 --> 00:08:37.639 faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for victory over 00:08:37.639 --> 00:08:41.940 sin and a host of demonic activity. That's a 00:08:41.940 --> 00:08:45.279 quote from Kenneth Wiest. Its purpose is to quench 00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:49.220 the fiery missiles. of the evil one, which kind 00:08:49.220 --> 00:08:52.120 of raises the question, what exactly is a fiery 00:08:52.120 --> 00:08:57.080 missile or a dart? Let me suggest it's the schemes, 00:08:57.220 --> 00:09:02.220 the temptations, the lies, the deceptions, and 00:09:02.220 --> 00:09:07.000 the attacks aimed at us, God's people, get this 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:09.759 down, to get us to shift our trust to something 00:09:09.759 --> 00:09:15.700 or someone other than God. The goal, just the 00:09:15.700 --> 00:09:21.029 goal is, don't trust God. It's impossible to 00:09:21.029 --> 00:09:24.289 please him apart from faith. The number one agenda 00:09:24.289 --> 00:09:27.870 of God in your life is this, will you trust me? 00:09:28.610 --> 00:09:31.289 Will you believe in? When Jesus was asked, what 00:09:31.289 --> 00:09:34.070 is the work of God? John chapter six, he said, 00:09:34.090 --> 00:09:37.009 this is the work of God, that you believe on 00:09:37.009 --> 00:09:40.730 him whom he has sent. There's only one time the 00:09:40.730 --> 00:09:42.909 disciples are ever reproved by Jesus that we 00:09:42.909 --> 00:09:44.909 have in the New Testament. Oh, you of little. 00:09:46.120 --> 00:09:49.259 He wants us to believe. He's demonstrated his 00:09:49.259 --> 00:09:52.679 power. He's given us his promises. In fact, here's 00:09:52.679 --> 00:09:56.259 a question that in any situation, okay? Jot this 00:09:56.259 --> 00:09:59.320 down. It's not in your notes. Maybe it's a challenge 00:09:59.320 --> 00:10:01.080 in your marriage. Maybe it's a challenge in your 00:10:01.080 --> 00:10:03.000 business. A challenge with one of your grown 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:07.460 kids. Maybe it's a physical situation. Ask this 00:10:07.460 --> 00:10:11.539 question. What does it look like to trust God 00:10:11.539 --> 00:10:16.090 in this situation? Lord? I don't know what to 00:10:16.090 --> 00:10:18.909 do. What does it look like to trust you? That 00:10:18.909 --> 00:10:23.429 changes the equation. Because here's what I know 00:10:23.429 --> 00:10:26.289 is God's will. No matter what I'm going through, 00:10:26.350 --> 00:10:29.289 an all -knowing, all -powerful, good and sovereign 00:10:29.289 --> 00:10:34.809 God wants me to trust him. I may have a role 00:10:34.809 --> 00:10:38.389 in it. I may not. But we tend to jump to how 00:10:38.389 --> 00:10:41.190 do I fix this or how do I take control of it? 00:10:41.480 --> 00:10:45.480 Or how do I manage it? Some examples of fiery 00:10:45.480 --> 00:10:49.940 darts are blasphemous thoughts. Other things 00:10:49.940 --> 00:10:53.600 that can happen, hateful thoughts, doubts, a 00:10:53.600 --> 00:10:57.019 burning desire to sin, questioning others' motives, 00:10:57.519 --> 00:11:00.000 unexplained waves of discouragement or depression, 00:11:00.340 --> 00:11:04.980 often rooted in either questioning God's identity 00:11:04.980 --> 00:11:09.559 or your new identity. Did God really 00:12:07.779 --> 00:12:13.240 say? There's always a doubt in his word. Notice 00:12:13.240 --> 00:12:15.919 he doesn't come as Satan. He comes disguised. 00:12:16.919 --> 00:12:19.799 So he comes disguised, almost always offering 00:12:19.799 --> 00:12:23.059 you a good thing to solve a problem in your life. 00:12:23.620 --> 00:12:26.360 But he's offering a shortcut or it's a good thing 00:12:26.360 --> 00:12:30.159 in a bad way or at a bad time or in a way that 00:12:30.159 --> 00:12:34.659 God has said this is not the way to do it. And 00:12:34.659 --> 00:12:40.639 then after that, If you take a piece of the fruit, 00:12:40.720 --> 00:12:42.639 whatever the fruit happens to be that he's shown 00:12:42.639 --> 00:12:46.320 you and you know is wrong, then he will blow 00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:48.419 over you with the condemnation for what you've 00:12:48.419 --> 00:12:51.759 done and then convince you that you're unworthy 00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:54.440 of any of God's mercy and any of God's grace, 00:12:54.639 --> 00:12:58.139 and it's a downward spiral. As you would study 00:12:58.139 --> 00:13:03.919 Matthew chapter 4, you'll find that Jesus is 00:13:03.919 --> 00:13:07.250 tempted in three specific areas. And if you study 00:13:07.250 --> 00:13:10.269 Genesis carefully, you'll find that they're tempted 00:13:10.269 --> 00:13:13.529 in three specific areas. And those three areas 00:13:13.529 --> 00:13:16.549 are found in 1 John. I want you all to open your 00:13:16.549 --> 00:13:20.470 Bibles to 1 John, all the way at the end, 1 John 00:13:20.470 --> 00:13:27.570 2. And in 1 John 2, he will identify the three 00:13:27.570 --> 00:13:31.429 areas of temptation that faced our first parents. 00:13:31.950 --> 00:13:35.809 The three areas of temptation. that Jesus faced, 00:13:35.970 --> 00:13:40.629 and the three areas of temptation that you and 00:13:40.629 --> 00:13:45.049 I will always face. These are like three verses 00:13:45.049 --> 00:13:51.009 that would be of great profit to memorize. Verse 00:13:51.009 --> 00:13:55.450 15 of 1 John chapter 2. Do not love the world 00:13:55.450 --> 00:13:58.610 or the things that are in the world. If anyone 00:13:58.610 --> 00:14:01.850 loves the world, the love of the Father is not 00:14:01.850 --> 00:14:05.019 in him. Okay, well what's the world? Is this 00:14:05.019 --> 00:14:08.799 the physical world? No. This is the world as 00:14:08.799 --> 00:14:12.440 in the culture, the society, and the values. 00:14:13.019 --> 00:14:15.759 And who's the prince and the power and the governor 00:14:15.759 --> 00:14:19.860 of this world? Satan. And so he creates culture 00:14:19.860 --> 00:14:25.039 and society and norms and values to seduce. Here's 00:14:25.039 --> 00:14:30.720 his goal. He's a seducer. He wants to seduce 00:14:30.720 --> 00:14:36.269 you. from your love of Jesus and get you to love 00:14:36.269 --> 00:14:40.830 you, yourself. And he tells you the way that 00:14:40.830 --> 00:14:43.110 you can have all that you want. Remember what 00:14:43.110 --> 00:14:47.830 Eve, this will make you like God. And we don't 00:14:47.830 --> 00:14:49.850 want to admit this, but when we want to control 00:14:49.850 --> 00:14:53.070 our world and our outcomes, we want to be little 00:14:53.070 --> 00:14:56.049 gods. And so notice what he says. Well, what 00:14:56.049 --> 00:14:57.850 is the world? For all that is in the world, the 00:14:57.850 --> 00:15:00.490 lust of the flesh. The lust of the eyes and the 00:15:00.490 --> 00:15:02.789 boastful pride of life is not from the Father, 00:15:02.850 --> 00:15:06.230 but is from the world. And then the next verse 00:15:06.230 --> 00:15:10.210 is like perspective. And the world is passing 00:15:10.210 --> 00:15:13.870 away, and also its lusts. But the one who does 00:15:13.870 --> 00:15:17.289 the will of God abides forever. And by the way 00:15:17.289 --> 00:15:21.529 here, this word for lust, lust of the eyes, it's 00:15:21.529 --> 00:15:24.429 not necessarily a negative word. Literally, it's 00:15:24.429 --> 00:15:27.899 the word desire. In this passage and others, 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:30.299 there's a little prefix they put to it. It means 00:15:30.299 --> 00:15:35.179 an intensified desire. And so three things. Jesus 00:15:35.179 --> 00:15:39.019 comes. An enemy says, first questioning his identity. 00:15:39.159 --> 00:15:41.220 If you are the son of God, he knew who he was. 00:15:41.559 --> 00:15:44.820 But it's prove it. Prove it. Turn these stones 00:15:44.820 --> 00:15:48.059 into bread. Use your supernatural power. Rather 00:15:48.059 --> 00:15:51.399 than trusting God, you take control. And it's 00:15:51.399 --> 00:15:54.059 been 40 days and the text says he's hungry. He 00:15:54.059 --> 00:15:58.870 has a... legitimate need for food. And the enemy 00:15:58.870 --> 00:16:02.330 says, well then turn the stones and prove something 00:16:02.330 --> 00:16:06.409 and you can meet your legitimate physical need 00:16:06.409 --> 00:16:10.090 of the flesh now, my way in my time. And what 00:16:10.090 --> 00:16:13.750 did Jesus say? It is written, man shall not live 00:16:13.750 --> 00:16:17.009 by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds 00:16:17.009 --> 00:16:20.669 out of the mouth of God. The test, lust of the 00:16:20.669 --> 00:16:24.159 flesh. Then he took him up to the top of the 00:16:24.159 --> 00:16:26.980 temple. He says, throw yourself off. And then 00:16:26.980 --> 00:16:29.340 are you ready? He quotes scripture. He quotes 00:16:29.340 --> 00:16:31.820 the Psalms and says, the angels will catch you. 00:16:32.039 --> 00:16:33.759 Here's the temptation, the lust of the eyes. 00:16:34.059 --> 00:16:36.399 You want to look good in front of people. People 00:16:36.399 --> 00:16:38.840 will know you're the Messiah. You'll be hot stuff. 00:16:41.159 --> 00:16:45.210 And then third, look at all these kingdoms.
