The scripture says, 00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:45.000 for that which was written in earlier times, 00:03:45.020 --> 00:03:47.479 speaking of the Old Testament, was written for 00:03:47.479 --> 00:03:50.840 our instruction. That through perseverance and 00:03:50.840 --> 00:03:52.919 encouragement of the scriptures, we might have 00:03:52.919 --> 00:03:55.900 hope. And so here's the message. I want you to 00:03:55.900 --> 00:03:58.500 picture this. We're going to take a snapshot 00:03:58.500 --> 00:04:01.840 of a breakthrough person in the Old Testament 00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:06.139 named David, starts as a shepherd boy, becomes 00:04:06.139 --> 00:04:10.180 a king, and takes a nation to its pinnacle, passes 00:04:10.180 --> 00:04:13.460 it off to his son. And then what we're going 00:04:13.460 --> 00:04:15.419 to do is we're going to peek into his personal 00:04:15.419 --> 00:04:19.370 journal. We're going to... get to hear what went 00:04:19.370 --> 00:04:22.110 on inside of his heart. What was the inside journey 00:04:22.110 --> 00:04:25.790 like? How was it that despite his ups and downs 00:04:25.790 --> 00:04:29.470 and struggles, that God continued to do the impossible 00:04:29.470 --> 00:04:33.230 from the time he slayed a giant to the time that 00:04:33.230 --> 00:04:35.529 he raised millions and millions of dollars to 00:04:35.529 --> 00:04:39.629 build a temple for his great God? So with that, 00:04:39.649 --> 00:04:41.430 let's do a little overview of his life. Many 00:04:41.430 --> 00:04:43.649 of you will be pretty familiar, but some of us 00:04:43.649 --> 00:04:45.610 didn't grow up in church and never opened the 00:04:45.610 --> 00:04:48.910 Bible until we were adults. So, first of all, 00:04:48.930 --> 00:04:52.529 David is an unlikely choice. The context is this. 00:04:52.589 --> 00:04:55.329 The nation has rejected God as their king. They 00:04:55.329 --> 00:04:57.589 said, we want a king, so they chose their own 00:04:57.589 --> 00:05:00.290 king named Saul. And Saul had a very good but 00:05:00.290 --> 00:05:03.250 brief start. And then he became proud. He became 00:05:03.250 --> 00:05:07.019 disobedient. And pretty soon... God said, you 00:05:07.019 --> 00:05:09.819 know, I can't use him anymore. And he said to 00:05:09.819 --> 00:05:12.920 his prophet Samuel, I'm going to choose my king. 00:05:13.379 --> 00:05:15.279 I want you to go to this house, the man's name 00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:18.680 Jesse, get his family together, and I want you 00:05:18.680 --> 00:05:20.600 to go there and I'll tell you which one will 00:05:20.600 --> 00:05:24.730 be the king. And so Samuel goes and he has his 00:05:24.730 --> 00:05:26.410 boys line up, you know, one, two, three, four, 00:05:26.509 --> 00:05:28.910 five, six. And the first one is strong, big, 00:05:29.029 --> 00:05:31.389 handsome. And Samuel goes, this must be the one. 00:05:31.430 --> 00:05:33.730 And God says, no, that's not the one. Don't look 00:05:33.730 --> 00:05:35.310 at the height of his stature, his appearance, 00:05:35.389 --> 00:05:39.050 because God doesn't see the way man sees. Man 00:05:39.050 --> 00:05:41.149 looks on the outward appearance, but God weighs 00:05:41.149 --> 00:05:44.110 the heart. And so each of the son comes by and. 00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:47.819 God says, no, no, no, no, no. And finally, Samuel 00:05:47.819 --> 00:05:50.319 says, do you have any other sons? He goes, well, 00:05:50.439 --> 00:05:52.220 you know, I've got one more, but he's the youngest. 00:05:52.420 --> 00:05:55.459 And by the way, this is the smallest tribe, which 00:05:55.459 --> 00:05:57.279 is the most insignificant. So now he's going 00:05:57.279 --> 00:05:59.879 to choose the youngest son. I mean, he's not 00:05:59.879 --> 00:06:01.740 even important enough to make the meeting. He's 00:06:01.740 --> 00:06:04.579 out just tending the sheep. And Samuel says, 00:06:04.699 --> 00:06:07.689 we're not moving on until. He comes, so David 00:06:07.689 --> 00:06:11.149 comes, and he takes a flask of oil and anoints. 00:06:11.149 --> 00:06:14.110 And even our word Christ means the anointed one. 00:06:14.269 --> 00:06:17.129 It means chosen, and the anointing of God always 00:06:17.129 --> 00:06:21.269 has the power to do a great task for God. And 00:06:21.269 --> 00:06:23.910 so he takes the most unlikely, the youngest, 00:06:24.089 --> 00:06:26.930 a teenage boy, and says he's going to be the 00:06:26.930 --> 00:06:31.149 king. to have your mind swirling and realizing 00:06:31.149 --> 00:06:33.850 there seems to be a theme in this series. God 00:06:33.850 --> 00:06:36.709 keeps choosing unlikely people that no one else 00:06:36.709 --> 00:06:39.069 thinks can do anything. And I don't know about 00:06:39.069 --> 00:06:40.529 you, but that gives me a lot of encouragement. 00:06:41.290 --> 00:06:43.889 Well, what's his first big breakthrough? He's 00:06:43.889 --> 00:06:46.329 an unlikely candidate, but his first impossible 00:06:46.329 --> 00:06:49.610 thing that he does is he's anointed, but like 00:06:49.610 --> 00:06:52.269 it works with us, God speaks to us, but often 00:06:52.269 --> 00:06:55.250 there's a journey and a time and a process. And 00:06:55.250 --> 00:06:58.110 so they're at war with the Philistines. 1 Samuel 00:06:58.110 --> 00:07:01.430 17. And as they're at war with the Philistines, 00:07:01.470 --> 00:07:03.350 they have this giant named Goliath. He's about 00:07:03.350 --> 00:07:06.970 nine feet tall. He's huge. And he comes out every 00:07:06.970 --> 00:07:09.470 day taunting the armies of God. And you can picture 00:07:09.470 --> 00:07:11.569 this valley on one side of the Israelites and 00:07:11.569 --> 00:07:14.389 on the other side of the Philistines. And he 00:07:14.389 --> 00:07:16.670 comes out and basically says, let's have one 00:07:16.670 --> 00:07:18.769 big war. You bring out your best warrior and 00:07:18.769 --> 00:07:22.449 whoever wins takes all. And every time he comes 00:07:22.449 --> 00:07:25.990 out, the king and the warriors tremble in fear. 00:07:26.830 --> 00:07:29.189 And David is on an errand. His dad says, I want 00:07:29.189 --> 00:07:31.209 you to take some grain and take some cheese and 00:07:31.209 --> 00:07:32.829 take it to your brothers. They're out on the 00:07:32.829 --> 00:07:35.769 front lines. And he takes it. And as he gets 00:07:35.769 --> 00:07:39.589 there, this event happens before his eyes. And, 00:07:39.649 --> 00:07:42.209 you know, he's naive and idealistic and he doesn't 00:07:42.209 --> 00:07:44.490 know much. Kind of the kind of people that God 00:07:44.490 --> 00:07:48.129 tends to use. And he hears all this. And in his 00:07:48.129 --> 00:07:50.750 mind and heart, he's going, how can these people 00:07:50.750 --> 00:07:53.370 stand around when they, the things they're saying 00:07:53.370 --> 00:07:56.600 against our great God? And if you know the story, 00:07:56.680 --> 00:07:58.879 he ends up volunteering. He goes to the king. 00:07:59.899 --> 00:08:03.220 And then we find an impossible situation where 00:08:03.220 --> 00:08:07.500 a teenage boy without any armor just takes what 00:08:07.500 --> 00:08:12.980 he does have, a sling and a stick. And he slings 00:08:12.980 --> 00:08:14.899 that thing and hits him right in the middle of 00:08:14.899 --> 00:08:17.819 the forehead and he drops and then he grabs his 00:08:17.819 --> 00:08:21.180 sword and finishes the job. And I mean, it's 00:08:21.180 --> 00:08:25.589 impossible. A teenage boy slays. This great giant. 00:08:26.310 --> 00:08:28.990 And so what we see is, okay, God chooses this 00:08:28.990 --> 00:08:32.190 improbable person. He has this amazing event 00:08:32.190 --> 00:08:35.629 that happens. Now let's peek into what happens 00:08:35.629 --> 00:08:38.690 after breakthrough. If you want a very, very 00:08:38.690 --> 00:08:41.769 long, this will take a pot of coffee, or all 00:08:41.769 --> 00:08:45.070 afternoon. From 1 Samuel 18 through the rest 00:08:45.070 --> 00:08:47.929 of 1 Samuel and all the book of 2 Samuel is the 00:08:47.929 --> 00:08:51.029 journey of David's life. And as you read it, 00:08:51.049 --> 00:08:54.320 what you find is that although God does impossible 00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:57.059 things in and through him. There's sort of a 00:08:57.059 --> 00:09:00.419 good and then there's a bad and there's even 00:09:00.419 --> 00:09:04.620 some ugly. The good is he's exalted after he 00:09:04.620 --> 00:09:08.539 kills Goliath. He has fame. He gets positioned 00:09:08.539 --> 00:09:10.980 in the army. He ends up getting to marry the 00:09:10.980 --> 00:09:14.379 king's daughter. He gets respected. There's wealth. 00:09:15.080 --> 00:09:18.220 Out of this process, he forms maybe the deepest 00:09:18.220 --> 00:09:21.019 and best relationship of his life with a brother 00:09:21.019 --> 00:09:24.529 named Jonathan. He has blessing, reputation, 00:09:24.750 --> 00:09:29.330 and eventually he becomes king. The bad is that 00:09:29.330 --> 00:09:33.210 the king, whose carnal gets jealous, Saul, there's 00:09:33.210 --> 00:09:36.240 betrayal. And then he's persecuted. He's running 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:38.539 for his life for about a 10 -year period. He's 00:09:38.539 --> 00:09:41.139 hiding in caves. He's separated from his family. 00:09:41.259 --> 00:09:44.120 The king gives his wife to some other guy. And 00:09:44.120 --> 00:09:46.120 so one of the reasons I wanted to choose David 00:09:46.120 --> 00:09:48.779 is as I've prayed for you all, and you give me 00:09:48.779 --> 00:09:51.159 emails and conversations, you take these steps 00:09:51.159 --> 00:09:53.080 of faith, and some of you have decided you're 00:09:53.080 --> 00:09:54.899 going to go to counseling, and others have flown 00:09:54.899 --> 00:09:57.720 across the country to apologize or make restitution 00:09:57.720 --> 00:10:00.299 with a parent, and multiple things are happening 00:10:00.299 --> 00:10:02.419 as you tell me you're taking steps of faith. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:06.559 Here's my concern. Sometimes we have this sort 00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:09.360 of American notion, you know, like once you do 00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:10.820 the right thing, then everything's going to be 00:10:10.820 --> 00:10:14.200 rosy and wonderful, right? You know, I went to 00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:16.100 counseling. Well, actually, usually they dig 00:10:16.100 --> 00:10:17.720 up a bunch of junk before you get to the good 00:10:17.720 --> 00:10:20.580 stuff. And your mate often gets more mad at you 00:10:20.580 --> 00:10:22.580 and stuff comes to the surface. Believe me, I've 00:10:22.580 --> 00:10:24.840 been there and done that. And when you go apologize 00:10:24.840 --> 00:10:27.279 to someone and say, you know, I was in church 00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:28.840 and I was thinking, I was reading the Bible and 00:10:28.840 --> 00:10:31.059 God spoke to me and I just want to, you know, 00:10:31.080 --> 00:10:32.440 you're thinking to yourself, I'm going to apologize 00:10:32.440 --> 00:10:35.039 for my 10%. I really think it was their 90%. 00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:38.080 And you own your 10 % and they go, yeah, let 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:39.440 me tell you about what you, and you're thinking, 00:10:39.500 --> 00:10:42.700 wait a second, God. Or you decide you're going 00:10:42.700 --> 00:10:45.639 to go public at work and you get ridiculed. All 00:10:45.639 --> 00:10:48.220 I want you to know is when you take steps of 00:10:48.220 --> 00:10:51.940 faith and God's favor is poured out, it often 00:10:51.940 --> 00:10:55.659 gets more difficult before it gets better. And 00:10:55.659 --> 00:10:58.120 you need to understand is that that's when a 00:10:58.120 --> 00:11:00.159 lot of people bail out thinking, oh, I must have 00:11:00.159 --> 00:11:01.700 done the wrong thing. No, you didn't do the right, 00:11:01.740 --> 00:11:06.720 wrong thing. All God's impossible grace into 00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:09.879 difficult situations are in the context of a 00:11:09.879 --> 00:11:13.120 hostile environment. And it's very, very difficult. 00:11:13.200 --> 00:11:16.480 And part of his power and grace is enduring through 00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:19.620 him and watching him work. And so David, he's 00:11:19.620 --> 00:11:22.460 anointed king, but for 10 years, he's dodging 00:11:22.460 --> 00:11:24.539 spears, running for his life, eating off the 00:11:24.539 --> 00:11:30.240 land. And then he eventually becomes king. He 00:11:30.240 --> 00:11:33.320 sees God's favor. Tremendous things happen. He 00:11:33.320 --> 00:11:38.679 takes control over all militarily. But there's 00:11:38.679 --> 00:11:42.500 some ugly. He's a great man. He's a great leader. 00:11:42.740 --> 00:11:46.580 He's a great warrior. He's a great psalmist, 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:50.740 musician. But he's at the wrong place at the 00:11:50.740 --> 00:11:54.360 wrong time one day. And in a moment of weakness, 00:11:54.440 --> 00:11:56.519 he takes another man's wife and he commits adultery. 00:11:57.419 --> 00:12:01.720 After he commits adultery, like many of us, his 00:12:01.720 --> 00:12:04.600 cover -up is worse than his sin. And he tries 00:12:04.600 --> 00:12:07.639 to make it look like the baby is going to be 00:12:07.639 --> 00:12:09.720 this other man's and he can't get the man to 00:12:10.169 --> 00:12:13.769 fall for his plan, so he has him killed. And 00:12:13.769 --> 00:12:17.769 so for a year, this great man of God lives with 00:12:17.769 --> 00:12:21.250 a secret. He's committed adultery, he's committed 00:12:21.250 --> 00:12:25.289 murder, and then he's confronted. And what makes 00:12:25.289 --> 00:12:27.889 David a great man is not his history, not that 00:12:27.889 --> 00:12:31.289 he ever did everything right. I mean, those are 00:12:31.289 --> 00:12:35.830 big. But when confronted, he owned it, and he 00:12:35.830 --> 00:12:39.379 was honest, and he repented. And there were consequences. 00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:44.600 But he was restored. And by the end of his life, 00:12:44.779 --> 00:12:48.000 he was a man that had a knowledge of God and 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.440 a view of God that he sought to pass on to others 00:12:51.440 --> 00:12:53.820 that we live with today. And many of them are 00:12:53.820 --> 00:12:56.340 in the Psalms. It's kind of his personal journey 00:12:56.340 --> 00:12:59.940 that he put to music. He wasn't the best father 00:12:59.940 --> 00:13:02.460 in the world. He had moments where his pride 00:13:02.460 --> 00:13:05.559 got him in big trouble. In fact, one of the things, 00:13:05.639 --> 00:13:07.100 you know, I didn't grow up as a Christian. When 00:13:07.100 --> 00:13:09.740 I read the Bible, one of the greatest testaments 00:13:09.740 --> 00:13:12.019 that it's actually the word of God is if you 00:13:12.019 --> 00:13:14.340 were trying to write a book about religion and 00:13:14.340 --> 00:13:16.580 get people to buy it, you wouldn't include this 00:13:16.580 --> 00:13:19.820 stuff. I mean, read about other, you know, quite 00:13:19.820 --> 00:13:22.059 leaders or religious movements. I mean, they're 00:13:22.059 --> 00:13:24.019 bigger than life. I mean, you wouldn't say that 00:13:24.019 --> 00:13:26.159 one of the greatest men committed adultery and 00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:29.379 murder. But God wants you to know and I know 00:13:29.379 --> 00:13:31.940 that there's a journey. And he does want to do 00:13:31.940 --> 00:13:35.059 impossible things and supernatural things, but 00:13:35.059 --> 00:13:38.000 he does it through fallen, hurting people who 00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:41.659 often make some big mistakes. But your failure 00:13:41.659 --> 00:13:43.879 doesn't have to define the rest of your life. 00:13:44.539 --> 00:13:47.639 In fact, here's David's view near the end of 00:13:47.639 --> 00:13:50.639 his life. He's realized all that he's been through. 00:13:51.019 --> 00:13:54.220 He's asked God and the people to join with him, 00:13:54.259 --> 00:13:57.200 to raise some money, to build a temple instead 00:13:57.200 --> 00:13:59.379 of this sort of tent that God is living in and 00:13:59.379 --> 00:14:02.580 they're worshiping. So David blessed the Lord. 00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:05.440 It's 1 Chronicles 29. In the sight of all the 00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:08.019 assembly, David said, Blessed are you, O Lord 00:14:08.019 --> 00:14:12.299 God of Israel. And then notice his perspective 00:14:12.299 --> 00:14:17.220 of God. Our Father. Forever and ever. And this 00:14:17.220 --> 00:14:19.860 is how he sees God. Yours is the greatness and 00:14:19.860 --> 00:14:22.019 the power and the glory and the victory and the 00:14:22.019 --> 00:14:24.779 majesty. Indeed, everything in the heavens and 00:14:24.779 --> 00:14:28.289 the earth. Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and 00:14:28.289 --> 00:14:31.750 you exalt yourself as head over all. And then 00:14:31.750 --> 00:14:34.190 he looks back on all the stuff of life and all 00:14:34.190 --> 00:14:36.789 the demands of life. Both riches and honor come 00:14:36.789 --> 00:14:40.470 from you. You rule over all and it's in your 00:14:40.470 --> 00:14:44.210 hands is all power and might. He wants to manifest his power in his 00:16:24.450 --> 00:16:28.250 presence to heal, restore, and love, and communicate 00:16:28.250 --> 00:16:31.870 to people how real he is and how much he loves 00:16:31.870 --> 00:16:35.529 them. And the question we're going to ask and 00:16:35.529 --> 00:16:39.570 answer is how did David habitually, that's the 00:16:39.570 --> 00:16:43.509 key word, how did David habitually unleash God's 00:16:43.509 --> 00:16:46.389 supernatural power into impossible situations? 00:16:47.159 --> 00:16:49.379 And it's not the only Psalm, but I think in this 00:16:49.379 --> 00:16:53.059 little portion of his journal, we learn five 00:16:53.059 --> 00:16:56.679 things about who he is and five specific things 00:16:56.679 --> 00:16:59.600 that he did that I can say in my life and you 00:16:59.600 --> 00:17:02.139 can say in yours. You know what? I think if I 00:17:02.139 --> 00:17:05.640 do that, I think if I seek to be that kind of 00:17:05.640 --> 00:17:08.480 person, that I can have a journey for the next 00:17:08.480 --> 00:17:11.660 10 or 20 or 50 years, however God gives you, 00:17:11.680 --> 00:17:18.119 and I can habitually make Break through the new 00:17:18.119 --> 00:17:22.980 norm. Let's pick up the story here. It's Psalm 00:17:22.980 --> 00:17:28.599 27. The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom 00:17:28.599 --> 00:17:32.000 shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:36.599 life. Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked 00:17:36.599 --> 00:17:39.980 advance against me and devour me, it is my enemies 00:17:39.980 --> 00:17:42.900 and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though 00:17:42.900 --> 00:17:47.180 an army besiege me, my heart, I will not fear. 00:17:47.559 --> 00:17:50.460 Though a war break out against me, even then 00:17:50.460 --> 00:17:53.519 I will be confident. When he was hiding for 00:18:23.349 --> 00:18:25.650 his life, light dispels the darkness. And notice the little word, my, 00:18:35.559 --> 00:18:38.240 my, my. This is personal. This isn't a philosophy. 00:18:38.460 --> 00:18:42.420 It's not a worldview. God, Yahweh, Jesus is my 00:18:42.420 --> 00:18:45.240 light. But he's more than just my light. He's 00:18:45.240 --> 00:18:47.519 my salvation. In fact, you might write the word 00:18:47.519 --> 00:18:50.740 deliverer. He's not speaking of his eternal salvation 00:18:50.740 --> 00:18:54.380 here. He's saying, when I'm in trouble, God rescues 00:18:54.380 --> 00:18:58.789 me. He delivers me. He saves me. He can save 00:18:58.789 --> 00:19:01.170 this marriage. He can save this relationship. 00:19:01.390 --> 00:19:04.809 He can save this business. He can save me out 00:19:04.809 --> 00:19:07.470 of this addiction. That's what David's saying. 00:19:07.910 --> 00:19:10.390 And therefore, whom shall I fear? He's bigger 00:19:10.390 --> 00:19:13.710 than that. He's bigger than that. You either 00:19:13.710 --> 00:19:15.869 have a really big God and small problems, or 00:19:15.869 --> 00:19:17.490 you have really big problems and a very small 00:19:17.490 --> 00:19:20.210 God. And then he says, when stuff comes together, 00:19:20.329 --> 00:19:23.920 he's my stronghold. It's a picture of a place 00:19:23.920 --> 00:19:27.160 where the enemy can't get in. It's a huge cave 00:19:27.160 --> 00:19:29.660 with a fortress in front of it is the idea. And 00:19:29.660 --> 00:19:33.759 no one can hurt you there. And he's declaring 00:19:33.759 --> 00:19:38.359 something. This is why God used David. He declared 00:19:38.359 --> 00:19:42.759 by faith. The Lord is my light. The Lord is my 00:19:42.759 --> 00:19:45.299 stronghold. The Lord is my deliverer. I won't 00:19:45.299 --> 00:19:47.730 be afraid. I won't be afraid. And then in your 00:19:47.730 --> 00:19:49.190 notes, I want you to put a little box around 00:19:49.190 --> 00:19:52.269 a few key words because he's not doing this like, 00:19:52.349 --> 00:19:55.910 you know, writing a nice song. It's not because 00:20:36.299 --> 00:20:39.680 he thinks he's stronger, better, wiser, or more 00:20:39.680 --> 00:20:45.170 godly. It's because he knows who God is. You might jot, if you would, Hebrews 00:21:52.460 --> 00:21:57.680 11, verse 6. It keeps coming back to this. Without 00:21:57.680 --> 00:22:02.869 faith, It's impossible to please God. And he 00:22:02.869 --> 00:22:05.049 that comes to God or she that comes to God must 00:22:05.049 --> 00:22:07.589 believe two things. Number one, that he exists. 00:22:08.730 --> 00:22:11.849 Not theoretically, that he exists. He. Who's 00:22:11.849 --> 00:22:16.150 the he? The all -powerful, all -knowing, sovereign, 00:22:16.369 --> 00:22:21.329 king, lover, just one of the universe who created 00:22:21.329 --> 00:22:24.450 all that there is. He exists. And here's then 00:22:24.450 --> 00:22:28.490 the second part. And he's a rewarder. Of those 00:22:28.490 --> 00:22:32.089 who diligently seek him. God's blessing. Number two, a passionate worshiper. 00:23:14.440 --> 00:23:15.740 And you say, well, Chip, where do you get that? 00:23:15.779 --> 00:23:18.220 Look at verse four. It's like 00:24:31.420 --> 00:24:33.180 he's trying to find different words. At this 00:24:33.180 --> 00:24:36.279 point in Israel's history, they worshiped in 00:24:36.279 --> 00:24:39.099 the tabernacle. He says dwelling, sacred tent, 00:24:39.259 --> 00:24:41.759 sacred tent, temple. He takes three or four different 00:24:41.759 --> 00:24:45.099 words and says. When I corporately come with 00:24:45.099 --> 00:24:48.119 God's people into the presence of God and he 00:24:48.119 --> 00:24:50.779 manifests his Shekinah glory and his power and 00:24:50.779 --> 00:24:52.940 his presence and his beauty. And when I'm up 00:24:52.940 --> 00:24:55.319 on the rooftop or when I'm meditating on my bed 00:24:55.319 --> 00:24:58.259 or like I have this thirst like a deer panting 00:24:58.259 --> 00:25:00.619 for water when I long to hear God's voice and 00:25:00.619 --> 00:25:02.779 have him speak to me. He says, that's the number 00:25:02.779 --> 00:25:06.119 one priority of my life. His passion was for 00:25:06.119 --> 00:25:09.039 a person, not for prosperity. His number one 00:25:09.039 --> 00:25:11.619 passion was for God himself, not for what God 00:25:11.619 --> 00:25:17.509 could give him. And he arranged his time and 00:25:17.509 --> 00:25:23.190 he arranged his energy around pursuing God. And 00:25:23.190 --> 00:25:27.509 what he does, he praises him. He wants to behold 00:25:27.509 --> 00:25:30.710 his beauty. He wants to praise him. And for some 00:25:30.710 --> 00:25:32.769 of us, it's kind of like, well, I don't really 00:25:32.769 --> 00:25:36.769 know how to do that. I brought three tools that 00:25:36.769 --> 00:25:38.890 have been helpful for me because my confession 00:25:38.890 --> 00:25:42.430 is... at least the first decade or so I was a 00:25:42.430 --> 00:25:44.410 Christian, and I'm probably exaggerating, it 00:25:44.410 --> 00:25:46.829 was probably more, praise was not a big part 00:25:46.829 --> 00:25:51.710 of my life. I interceded, I prayed, I thanked. 00:25:52.130 --> 00:25:55.069 But this idea of acknowledging who God is and 00:25:55.069 --> 00:25:59.029 worshiping for who he actually is, which enlarges 00:25:59.029 --> 00:26:01.589 your view. God says he inhabits the praises of 00:26:01.589 --> 00:26:06.039 his people. And so a couple things happen. I 00:26:06.039 --> 00:26:08.059 keep mentioning this book because I've been reading 00:26:08.059 --> 00:26:10.339 it for over 30 years, but it's called The Knowledge 00:26:10.339 --> 00:26:12.619 of the Holy, and it's three or four chapters 00:26:12.619 --> 00:26:16.019 on the attributes of God. And as I begin to read 00:26:16.019 --> 00:26:18.740 about the attributes of God, I begin to enlarge 00:26:18.740 --> 00:26:20.700 my mind and my heart, and I would begin to praise 00:26:20.700 --> 00:26:24.680 him for who he was. A book that has been instrumental 00:26:24.680 --> 00:26:28.099 in my wife's life, Ruth Myers wrote a book called 00:26:28.099 --> 00:26:31.720 31 Days of Praise. Praise will strengthen your 00:26:31.720 --> 00:26:34.279 faith. Praise ushers you into God's presence. 00:26:34.500 --> 00:26:37.440 Praise activates God's power. Praise helps you 00:26:37.440 --> 00:26:39.980 overcome demonic opposition. Praise transforms 00:26:39.980 --> 00:26:43.160 your perspective. And praise brings pleasure 00:26:43.160 --> 00:26:47.130 and glory to God. And what I know is most of 00:26:47.130 --> 00:26:49.650 us are busy and we come to God like we do other 00:26:49.650 --> 00:26:51.430 people. I want to get this done. Could you take 00:26:51.430 --> 00:26:53.529 care of this? God, I have a problem. Would you 00:26:53.529 --> 00:26:55.750 take care of that? And basically for many of 00:26:55.750 --> 00:26:59.009 us, our time with God is, oh God, will you fix 00:26:59.009 --> 00:27:02.289 this, take care of that, or give me so I get 00:27:02.289 --> 00:27:07.890 relief. David was a worshiper. He was a passionate 00:27:07.890 --> 00:27:11.670 worshiper. In fact, can I give you an example? 00:27:13.329 --> 00:27:15.990 if David was going to come to our services, he 00:27:15.990 --> 00:27:17.829 would have been here five to seven minutes early 00:27:17.829 --> 00:27:21.390 because David would have never dreamed that someone 00:27:21.390 --> 00:27:23.910 getting up and declaring the truth of God's word 00:27:23.910 --> 00:27:26.589 is more important than gathering and singing 00:27:26.589 --> 00:27:31.309 praises directly to God. And yet we kind of live 00:27:31.309 --> 00:27:33.269 in a day, our behavior always tells you what 00:27:33.269 --> 00:27:38.589 you believe. So if you can come 10 minutes late 00:27:38.589 --> 00:27:40.609 or 15 minutes late or eight minutes late and 00:27:40.609 --> 00:27:43.250 you know the singing is just the singing. Actually, 00:27:43.250 --> 00:27:46.230 we're not singing to one another. We're declaring 00:27:46.230 --> 00:27:49.329 the praise of the holy creator of the earth. 00:27:49.589 --> 00:27:52.910 He finds pleasure in it. His presence is manifested 00:27:52.910 --> 00:27:56.269 in it. And it's not just reserved for corporate 00:27:56.269 --> 00:27:59.049 worship. I got news 00:28:03.950 --> 00:28:06.130 for you. You can get content. The presence of 00:28:06.130 --> 00:28:08.910 God doesn't show up on the internet. You need 00:28:08.910 --> 00:28:12.240 to be gathered with God's people. And for some 00:28:12.240 --> 00:28:17.500 of us, maybe loosen up a little bit. See, part 00:28:17.500 --> 00:28:20.099 of us long to experience God's presence. We won't 00:28:20.099 --> 00:28:24.480 let our emotions get involved. And maybe the 00:28:24.480 --> 00:28:28.180 place to start is in a back bedroom. Put a pillow 00:28:28.180 --> 00:28:33.740 under the door and sing to God. What you'll find 00:28:33.740 --> 00:28:37.769 is your experience of him will change.
