Or $50 million you feel like you could 00:02:33.020 --> 00:02:35.460 handle, or what you want is X a month, you wouldn't 00:02:35.460 --> 00:02:37.300 want a big stockpile. I don't know what you, 00:02:37.340 --> 00:02:40.680 but what's the answer to that question? How much 00:02:40.680 --> 00:02:42.439 would be too much? And one of the 00:03:13.599 --> 00:03:16.780 soils is the thorny soil and the thorny soil 00:03:16.780 --> 00:03:20.620 grows up, right? And it chokes out the very life, 00:03:20.740 --> 00:03:23.439 the word of God in a believer's heart. The two biblical profiles here, New Testament 00:21:59.039 --> 00:22:02.799 command is Matthew chapter 25, verses 14 through 00:22:02.799 --> 00:22:06.220 30. And I put that in your notes. It's a very 00:22:06.220 --> 00:22:09.019 long passage. And in light of that, what I'd 00:22:09.019 --> 00:22:11.480 like to do is give you the summary. You're familiar 00:22:11.480 --> 00:22:14.779 probably with it. Jesus is teaching about stewardship. 00:22:15.519 --> 00:22:17.980 And Jesus is teaching about being ready for his 00:22:17.980 --> 00:22:20.640 return. And Jesus is talking about what it looks 00:22:20.640 --> 00:22:22.839 like to be his manager. And so he tells this 00:22:22.839 --> 00:22:25.380 story. And he talks about this person who's going 00:22:25.380 --> 00:22:28.039 to go to a faraway country. And he gives five 00:22:28.039 --> 00:22:30.839 talents of treasure to one. Two talents of treasure 00:22:30.839 --> 00:22:34.400 to another. One talent to another. He goes for 00:22:34.400 --> 00:22:36.099 a long period of time. And the one with five 00:22:36.099 --> 00:22:38.140 talents doubles it. So he brings in five more. 00:22:38.339 --> 00:22:40.359 The one with two doubles it. He brings in two 00:22:40.359 --> 00:22:43.519 more. And both of those hear this. Well done, 00:22:43.680 --> 00:22:47.670 thou good and faithful. servant or steward. And so he comes and then he makes an excuse. 00:23:27.019 --> 00:23:29.759 And his excuse is a very warped view of God in 00:23:29.759 --> 00:23:31.819 the context. And it's, I knew you were a harsh 00:23:31.819 --> 00:23:33.920 master and you, you know, glean where you haven't 00:23:33.920 --> 00:23:36.380 sown and you are really tough to live with and 00:23:36.380 --> 00:23:37.740 you're going to be. He said, okay, if that's 00:23:37.740 --> 00:23:41.500 who you think I really am. take this wicked one 00:23:41.500 --> 00:23:43.700 away and give his one talent to the one that 00:23:43.700 --> 00:23:47.460 has ten. Because see, what he did is he buried 00:23:47.460 --> 00:23:50.339 it. He didn't do anything with it. He didn't 00:23:50.339 --> 00:23:52.180 even put it in the bank and get interest for 00:23:52.180 --> 00:23:57.779 his master. And Jesus' point of that whole talent 00:23:59.240 --> 00:24:02.519 Is that each one of us according to his purposes 00:24:02.519 --> 00:24:06.960 for us. And some abilities deposited in us. And did you notice that number five talent 00:24:30.950 --> 00:24:34.269 guy and number two talent guy got the same commendation? 00:24:34.450 --> 00:24:38.549 They got the same praise. So why don't you enjoy the house 00:25:45.259 --> 00:25:47.029 you're in? oh God, because I'm a little uncomfortable 00:25:47.029 --> 00:25:51.650 instead of thank you. And that's what God wants 00:25:51.650 --> 00:25:54.309 to do in our life. Let me give you a picture 00:25:54.309 --> 00:25:55.750 and then I'm going to give you practical ways 00:25:55.750 --> 00:26:00.009 to pass this on. The two pictures are one, if 00:26:00.009 --> 00:26:02.250 you ever want to read about a man, one of my 00:26:02.250 --> 00:26:05.700 most favorite characters. is Nehemiah in the 00:26:05.700 --> 00:26:08.180 Old Testament and Barnabas in the New. And the 00:26:08.180 --> 00:26:10.900 story of Nehemiah very briefly is he's the right 00:26:10.900 --> 00:26:12.799 -hand man to the most powerful man in the world. 00:26:13.500 --> 00:26:15.980 Israel has sinned against God, so he promised 00:26:15.980 --> 00:26:18.390 he would... dispersed them across the world, 00:26:18.569 --> 00:26:20.970 and he did. And so you have Jews in all these 00:26:20.970 --> 00:26:23.490 different places. And now Persia is the ruling 00:26:23.490 --> 00:26:26.970 empire. And Nehemiah opens with this place called 00:26:26.970 --> 00:26:29.549 Susa, which is up in the mountains, so it's cool 00:26:29.549 --> 00:26:31.789 because it's very hot in Persia or Iran in the 00:26:31.789 --> 00:26:34.390 summer. And so the king has this right -hand 00:26:34.390 --> 00:26:36.549 man named Nehemiah, and he's called a cupbearer. 00:26:36.549 --> 00:26:38.609 But the cupbearer's job was more than, you know, 00:26:38.670 --> 00:26:40.690 tasting the wine or the food to make sure it 00:26:40.690 --> 00:26:43.450 wasn't poison. He became a confidant. And so 00:26:43.450 --> 00:26:46.420 basically, Nehemiah has the hottest job. chariot, 00:26:46.420 --> 00:26:48.759 the greatest clothes, the most money, the best 00:26:48.759 --> 00:26:53.000 food. He is a person of great influence and affluence. 00:26:53.380 --> 00:26:57.799 He's filthy rich and he lives in a palace. He 00:26:57.799 --> 00:27:00.779 drives a Lexus chariot and doesn't feel guilty 00:27:00.779 --> 00:27:06.619 about it. He's got a Rolex Sundial. God deposited 00:27:06.619 --> 00:27:11.339 that in Nehemiah for a window of opportunity. 00:27:12.250 --> 00:27:15.289 And he wasn't a prophet and he wasn't a pastor. 00:27:15.430 --> 00:27:18.390 And if you studied all of God's agenda for his 00:27:18.390 --> 00:27:22.309 people, you would find out that man was the linchpin 00:27:22.309 --> 00:27:26.849 between all of God's prophecy going in the tubes 00:27:26.849 --> 00:27:31.529 and Israel being restored. He sent Ezra back. 00:27:31.529 --> 00:27:33.829 It didn't work. He sent Zerubbabel back to rebuild. 00:27:34.089 --> 00:27:37.589 It wasn't until Nehemiah, the business guy. The 00:27:37.589 --> 00:27:40.170 guy with position, the guy with power, the guy 00:27:40.170 --> 00:27:42.769 with leadership gift who could mobilize everyone 00:27:42.769 --> 00:27:46.930 to turn everything around. Stewardship isn't 00:27:46.930 --> 00:27:49.309 feeling guilty for having money and position 00:27:49.309 --> 00:27:52.470 and power and brains. Stewardship is understanding 00:27:52.470 --> 00:27:56.930 it's not yours. All you get is a verse that's 00:27:56.930 --> 00:28:00.029 hard to live with. To them, much given, much 00:28:00.029 --> 00:28:03.940 is required. And so when you make a lot of money 00:28:03.940 --> 00:28:06.200 and say, I tithe, God is not impressed, nor is 00:28:06.200 --> 00:28:09.740 anyone else. I mean, how hard is it to tithe 00:28:09.740 --> 00:28:12.359 when you're six figures or seven figures or beyond? 00:28:13.420 --> 00:28:15.380 The most generous people in the world right now 00:28:15.380 --> 00:28:19.559 are the poor. And when things go down, the people 00:28:19.559 --> 00:28:21.480 who stop giving first by all the research is 00:28:21.480 --> 00:28:26.680 us rich. And Nehemiah... He's this model of what 00:28:26.680 --> 00:28:29.279 it looks like to be godly, to be wealthy, and 00:28:29.279 --> 00:28:32.079 to be generous.
