Although a few de -expeditions, 00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:32.439 a couple of de -expeditions have gotten in through 00:06:32.439 --> 00:06:38.120 Zoro, JH1AJT, got in at a de -expedition. He 00:06:38.120 --> 00:06:43.019 had... some relationships through his NGO with 00:06:43.019 --> 00:06:45.160 the government officials there and was able to 00:06:45.160 --> 00:06:48.620 get on the air about a year ago and work a lot 00:06:48.620 --> 00:06:51.759 of people. Another interesting thing 00:14:39.659 --> 00:14:41.659 is that George Orwell was in the British Army 00:14:41.659 --> 00:14:44.200 there and that's where he wrote Burmese days 00:14:44.200 --> 00:14:48.519 and he hated Burma Because it was so hot and 00:14:48.519 --> 00:14:51.620 humid and muggy and buggy, you know And he didn't 00:14:51.620 --> 00:14:55.100 like what the colonization was doing to the country 00:14:55.100 --> 00:14:59.379 Yeah, let's talk just miss briefly about the 00:14:59.379 --> 00:15:02.899 country and the name switch from Burma to Myanmar 00:15:02.899 --> 00:15:07.879 and and just exactly what's what's going on with 00:15:07.879 --> 00:15:11.879 the changes there? Well, it's been very interesting. 00:15:12.559 --> 00:15:16.360 You know, they've been in a military situation, 00:15:16.500 --> 00:15:18.340 a military government, especially since about 00:15:18.340 --> 00:15:23.159 1962, but originally Aung San was assassinated 00:15:23.159 --> 00:15:26.820 in 1948, somewhere around there, right after 00:15:26.820 --> 00:15:31.860 the war when the British were... leaving and 00:15:31.860 --> 00:15:35.139 Aung San was leading and moving towards democracy 00:15:35.139 --> 00:15:40.039 and the military assassinated him and then as 00:15:40.039 --> 00:15:42.159 the years went on they did actually have a vote 00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:44.960 where they wanted more democracy in the 60s and 00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:48.279 there was a rebellion there of when the military 00:15:48.279 --> 00:15:51.860 government said no they cracked down and really 00:15:51.860 --> 00:15:55.039 it hasn't been that long since they were still 00:15:55.039 --> 00:15:59.759 putting down very harshly any anything that was 00:15:59.759 --> 00:16:02.860 anti -government or thought to be anti -government, 00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:06.779 the freedom of the press, students, what have 00:16:06.779 --> 00:16:11.200 you, were shot and thrown into Inlet Lake. And then in the west, in Rakhine, 00:17:18.210 --> 00:17:20.809 in the west, where there's a lot of a Muslim 00:17:20.809 --> 00:17:24.289 because they border Bangladesh and they are highly, 00:17:24.289 --> 00:17:27.349 very discriminated against and persecuted over 00:17:27.349 --> 00:17:30.630 there. So they've had their issues. They are 00:17:30.630 --> 00:17:33.869 saying they're moving towards democracy. They 00:17:33.869 --> 00:17:37.390 just had their first free elections in 25 years 00:17:37.390 --> 00:17:39.910 while we were there, which was very interesting. 00:17:40.630 --> 00:17:44.990 So the free elections, Aung San Suu Kyi, who 00:17:44.990 --> 00:17:50.099 is Aung San's daughter, is the head of the National 00:17:50.099 --> 00:17:54.440 League for Democracy and her party won a super 00:17:54.440 --> 00:17:59.599 majority there. So it's all, no one knows which 00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:03.619 way it's gonna go. It's a very complex, complex 00:18:03.619 --> 00:18:07.259 political situation that's going on.
