So tell us how 00:09:17.830 --> 00:09:22.399 this all got started. Well, 50 years ago, so 00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:26.799 1967, if you can believe that, Ned Carmen, he 00:09:26.799 --> 00:09:31.820 was W0ZSW, and that is a call sign that the Handy 00:09:31.820 --> 00:09:35.940 Ham Club still has, was working with people in 00:09:35.940 --> 00:09:40.860 Rochester who had disabilities. And he realized 00:09:40.860 --> 00:09:44.340 something was missing. Yes, there was lots of 00:09:44.340 --> 00:09:46.759 services for people with disabilities, but there 00:09:46.759 --> 00:09:51.110 wasn't things that involved a social hobby. That's 00:09:51.110 --> 00:09:55.789 the part that was not there. And so he realized 00:09:55.789 --> 00:09:58.169 amateur radio would work. Amateur radio would 00:09:58.169 --> 00:10:00.529 allow people to be identified by a call sign 00:10:00.529 --> 00:10:04.730 instead of disability. And so he enlisted the 00:10:04.730 --> 00:10:07.230 Sisters of St. Francis to help him out, and that 00:10:07.230 --> 00:10:09.649 included Sister Alverna. Lots of people who know 00:10:09.649 --> 00:10:12.889 the history of the program know her. She was 00:10:12.889 --> 00:10:17.759 W -A -0 -S -G -I. And she was the former, one 00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:19.860 of the former education coordinators for the 00:10:19.860 --> 00:10:24.019 Handy Hand Program. So, you know, it kind of 00:10:24.019 --> 00:10:26.059 started Rochester. It seemed like it was just 00:10:26.059 --> 00:10:29.120 going to be a little program and word started 00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:30.980 spreading. And, you know, some of the things 00:10:30.980 --> 00:10:32.840 that you think are going to be little don't stay 00:10:32.840 --> 00:10:36.000 that way. And the Handy Hand Program was one 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:41.399 of them. quickly got bigger than they could handle. 00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:43.559 They didn't have the infrastructure to deal with 00:10:43.559 --> 00:10:47.639 what was happening. And so they sought help from 00:10:47.639 --> 00:10:50.240 the Minnesota Society for Crippled Children and 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:53.299 Adults, and that's what later became Courage 00:10:53.299 --> 00:10:55.879 Center. And at that point, they just helped with 00:10:55.879 --> 00:10:59.240 money and equipment, kind of giving a little 00:10:59.240 --> 00:11:04.059 bit of help in the background. But As the Handyham 00:11:04.059 --> 00:11:07.940 program spread not just in Minnesota and Iowa 00:11:07.940 --> 00:11:11.139 and Wisconsin area but throughout the Midwest 00:11:11.139 --> 00:11:14.960 and then throughout the world, it was clear they 00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:17.779 needed a whole lot more help and that's where 00:11:17.779 --> 00:11:20.779 it became an official Courage Center program. 00:11:22.700 --> 00:11:24.960 And so the Minnesota Handyham system, which is 00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:27.799 what it was known as back then, merged with Courage 00:11:27.799 --> 00:11:32.509 Center. how it got to where it is now. In 2013, 00:11:32.789 --> 00:11:35.110 Courage Center then merged with Sister Kenny 00:11:35.110 --> 00:11:37.950 Rehabilitation Institute. The two had worked 00:11:37.950 --> 00:11:41.889 together quite a bit over the years, so this 00:11:41.889 --> 00:11:45.750 was a natural merger to take place. And then 00:11:45.750 --> 00:11:48.870 because Alaina Health already had a relationship 00:11:48.870 --> 00:11:52.629 with Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, the 00:11:52.629 --> 00:11:54.309 hand -to -hand program essentially then became 00:11:54.309 --> 00:11:58.649 part of Alaina Health. So currently we're housed 00:11:58.649 --> 00:12:02.409 under the assistive technology department, which 00:12:02.409 --> 00:12:05.990 is a really great fit with amateur radio because 00:12:05.990 --> 00:12:09.789 when we need assistance in making amateur radio 00:12:09.789 --> 00:12:12.210 technology available to people with specific 00:12:12.210 --> 00:12:15.269 disabilities, they're the right people to help. 00:12:16.450 --> 00:12:21.750 Very good. I've remembered Handy Ham since I 00:12:21.750 --> 00:12:29.210 was a kid. We had some people who were blind 00:12:29.210 --> 00:12:35.019 and wanted to get into ham radio and so we modified 00:12:35.019 --> 00:12:39.320 some of the Morse code testing and helped some 00:12:39.320 --> 00:12:42.879 of those people become licensed and Handy Hams 00:12:42.879 --> 00:12:47.519 was there to give some assistance and just a 00:12:47.519 --> 00:12:51.419 couple of years ago right here in Bloomington 00:12:51.419 --> 00:12:55.639 we had someone that needed some assistance like 00:12:55.639 --> 00:12:59.500 that and was able to get a radio and get some 00:12:59.500 --> 00:13:03.899 help. So it's been a great 50 years of assistance 00:13:03.899 --> 00:13:07.340 and it's grown and so now you're actually under 00:13:07.340 --> 00:13:12.200 like a medical group then. Is that what Alina 00:13:12.200 --> 00:13:17.720 Health is? Yes, Alina Health runs hospitals and 00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:21.500 clinics throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. 00:13:22.100 --> 00:13:25.220 So it's quite a big organization which is nice 00:13:25.220 --> 00:13:27.740 because we can kind of lean on them for some 00:13:27.740 --> 00:13:33.759 assistance as well. Our tutorials, we try 00:15:17.610 --> 00:15:21.149 to have members that are blind do those because 00:15:22.299 --> 00:15:25.019 Somebody who has lived it will do a better job 00:15:25.019 --> 00:15:27.320 at making a tutorial for somebody else who is 00:15:27.320 --> 00:15:31.899 living that experience and making that available 00:15:31.899 --> 00:15:36.000 to people.
