A ham by the name of Randy Hansen, whiskey 00:08:13.300 --> 00:08:16.540 for Alpha Tango Foxtrot. And at that time, six 00:08:16.540 --> 00:08:20.000 other members got together and they created Deers 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:23.199 here at the Walt Disney World Resort. This was 00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:26.339 actually after the Deers group was founded in 00:08:26.339 --> 00:08:30.639 the Los Angeles area at the Disney offices there 00:08:30.639 --> 00:08:36.860 in California, they started in 1990. So the Deers 00:08:36.860 --> 00:08:38.940 Group here in Walt Disney World, they had their 00:08:38.940 --> 00:08:42.080 first field day in June, and they operated a 00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:44.220 special event station in the Magic Kingdom during 00:08:44.220 --> 00:08:48.600 the 25th anniversary there. What happened was 00:08:48.600 --> 00:08:53.700 that we had a very good relationship with the 00:08:53.700 --> 00:08:57.320 Disney security folks. and that we were added 00:08:57.320 --> 00:08:59.980 to the company's emergency operating plan as 00:08:59.980 --> 00:09:02.960 a resource of last resort. They were able to 00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:05.879 provide us with some facilities, with some funds 00:09:05.879 --> 00:09:10.500 for equipment, and that relationship actually 00:09:10.500 --> 00:09:16.100 still exists to this day. Our original equipment 00:09:16.100 --> 00:09:18.500 was set up over by the solid waste management 00:09:18.500 --> 00:09:21.639 building. It has been moved around quite a bit 00:09:21.639 --> 00:09:25.549 since then. Our first repeater antenna was moved 00:09:25.549 --> 00:09:28.429 from that to actually the top of the contemporary 00:09:28.429 --> 00:09:33.330 hotel near the Magic Kingdom, which of course 00:09:33.330 --> 00:09:36.789 gave us much better coverage from up there. Unfortunately, 00:09:37.149 --> 00:09:39.409 the management at the hotel did not like the 00:09:39.409 --> 00:09:42.590 looks of our equipment up there, so we actually 00:09:42.590 --> 00:09:44.750 ended up replacing the equipment, the antenna, 00:09:44.909 --> 00:09:47.710 with a better -looking antenna, and it stayed 00:09:47.710 --> 00:09:52.470 up there for quite a while. In 1999, we were 00:09:52.470 --> 00:09:54.669 given an operating position within the Emergency 00:09:54.669 --> 00:09:58.889 Operating Center here at Disney, and we had equipment 00:09:58.889 --> 00:10:03.690 set up there at the EOC. One of the things that 00:10:03.690 --> 00:10:06.470 the club participated in was during the white 00:10:06.470 --> 00:10:12.429 UK Event we had about 20 volunteers stationed 00:10:12.429 --> 00:10:17.269 around the property with HT's And we were just 00:10:17.269 --> 00:10:19.450 there to make sure if anything did actually happen 00:10:19.450 --> 00:10:20.870 not that we were thinking anything was going 00:10:20.870 --> 00:10:23.269 to happen But if it did we had ham stationed 00:10:23.269 --> 00:10:25.649 around the property to be able to report it back 00:10:25.649 --> 00:10:33.169 in to the EOC We What happened was later that 00:10:33.169 --> 00:10:36.470 year, in fact in 2000, as often happens in these 00:10:36.470 --> 00:10:39.429 industries, we had a large company turnover and 00:10:39.429 --> 00:10:42.330 the gentleman in the Disney security, he left 00:10:42.330 --> 00:10:45.049 the company and at that point we did not have 00:10:45.049 --> 00:10:47.690 anyone in the security organization who was sort 00:10:47.690 --> 00:10:53.769 of our backer.
