We still have one of those certificates 00:10:39.990 --> 00:10:42.789 donated by the estate of the ham who made the 00:10:42.789 --> 00:10:47.730 contact on display aboard the ship. GB5QM was 00:10:47.730 --> 00:10:49.909 decommissioned upon the Queen Mary's arrival 00:10:49.909 --> 00:10:52.950 in Long Beach, but Nate Brightman had more plans 00:10:52.950 --> 00:10:56.240 in mind. and for the next 11 years he persistently 00:10:56.240 --> 00:10:58.440 spoke to anyone in authority who would listen 00:10:58.440 --> 00:11:01.279 to him about his desire to create a permanent 00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:03.860 amateur radio station aboard the Queen Mary. 00:11:04.720 --> 00:11:08.559 His persistence paid off and in 1978 the Long 00:11:08.559 --> 00:11:11.399 Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved 00:11:11.399 --> 00:11:14.940 and funded his plans to build this station and 00:11:14.940 --> 00:11:19.399 on April 22nd of 1979 the wireless room aboard 00:11:19.399 --> 00:11:21.840 the Queen Mary was officially opened and began 00:11:21.840 --> 00:11:25.360 operations. The Associated Radio Amateurs of 00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:28.500 Long Beach gave their club call sign W6RO to 00:11:28.500 --> 00:11:31.740 the station and Swan Electronics again donated 00:11:31.740 --> 00:11:36.899 the initial radio equipment. In 2007, the station 00:11:36.899 --> 00:11:39.820 was officially renamed the Nate Breitman Wireless 00:11:39.820 --> 00:11:42.480 Room in recognition of Nate's tremendous work 00:11:42.480 --> 00:11:45.840 to establish and run it. Nate served as station 00:11:45.840 --> 00:11:48.899 manager for 34 years until his retirement in 00:11:48.899 --> 00:11:52.740 2013. and I was very fortunate to have served 00:11:52.740 --> 00:11:55.360 under him, and I'm privileged to call him friend 00:11:55.360 --> 00:11:59.600 for many years.
