The technician here, Glenn 00:14:28.769 --> 00:14:31.629 Nelson, is delving even deeper. He's going to 00:14:31.629 --> 00:14:35.110 National Archives and looking at newspaper articles 00:14:35.110 --> 00:14:38.169 about the station and the early history. And 00:14:38.169 --> 00:14:41.970 I'll be presenting all the known facts that he's 00:14:41.970 --> 00:14:46.190 garnered and hopefully have some new information 00:14:46.190 --> 00:14:50.090 about it. But, you know, NBS, National Bureau 00:14:50.090 --> 00:14:54.169 of Standards, began in Washington, D .C., 1901, 00:14:54.190 --> 00:14:58.009 but the NBS has been doing radio experimentation 00:14:58.009 --> 00:15:05.419 as early as 1905. And so... You know, it's one 00:15:05.419 --> 00:15:07.059 of those things that it was kind of hard when 00:15:07.059 --> 00:15:09.200 we were talking about the 100th anniversary of 00:15:09.200 --> 00:15:11.740 the station, when we wanted to have the celebration. 00:15:12.980 --> 00:15:17.480 It isn't like they built the radio station, they 00:15:17.480 --> 00:15:20.340 said, hey, we need a time and frequency station, 00:15:20.379 --> 00:15:22.279 and we built it, and they threw a switch one 00:15:22.279 --> 00:15:25.059 day, and it was on the air. It's one of those 00:15:25.059 --> 00:15:29.039 things like just about any experiment or adventure 00:15:29.039 --> 00:15:32.179 in science. It sort of just comes together piece 00:15:32.179 --> 00:15:38.919 by piece. So, but we did find a date of the 1st 00:15:38.919 --> 00:15:43.419 of October of 1919 as when the call sign WWV 00:15:43.419 --> 00:15:46.539 was issued to the National Bureau of Standards. 00:15:47.700 --> 00:15:50.720 And so even though the experiments were going 00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:55.620 on before 1919, like I said back as far as 1905, 00:15:56.940 --> 00:15:59.320 at some point they decided that the, you know, 00:15:59.320 --> 00:16:02.240 we need to put a call sign on these radio experiments. 00:16:02.559 --> 00:16:05.100 And so they were doing things like experimental 00:16:05.100 --> 00:16:08.220 concerts. They had an old Victrola and a telephone 00:16:08.220 --> 00:16:11.759 that was hooked up to an army transmitter. And 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:15.399 they would have experimental concerts that were 00:16:15.399 --> 00:16:18.000 transmitted several hundred yards, they said, 00:16:18.279 --> 00:16:22.299 across the MBS campus to an auditorium where 00:16:22.299 --> 00:16:26.620 people would listen. Later on in that year, they 00:16:26.620 --> 00:16:31.500 actually did farm market reports with a spark 00:16:31.500 --> 00:16:35.340 gap. transmitter and in 1923 finally they got 00:16:35.340 --> 00:16:39.820 around to doing broadcasting standard waves 500 00:16:39.820 --> 00:16:43.860 to 1500 meters and that was to help the commercial 00:16:43.860 --> 00:16:47.840 stations stay on their assigned frequency and 00:16:47.840 --> 00:16:50.899 you know they needed some reference to be able 00:16:50.899 --> 00:16:53.779 to you know one thing I'm learning about all 00:16:53.779 --> 00:16:56.720 this is that how chaotic the airwaves were back 00:16:56.720 --> 00:16:59.919 in the early 1900s I thought it was pretty quiet 00:16:59.919 --> 00:17:03.210 but it was right away out of the gate. It was 00:17:03.210 --> 00:17:06.369 very noisy, chaotic. A lot of people were experimenting. 00:17:07.190 --> 00:17:11.069 So it's all been very interesting. And I'd like 00:17:11.069 --> 00:17:14.490 to present some of the highlights of the station 00:17:14.490 --> 00:17:21.289 history at the forum. I imagine that until there 00:17:21.289 --> 00:17:29.589 was an agency that regulated everything that 00:17:29.630 --> 00:17:31.849 I mean everything it was just a free -for -all 00:17:31.849 --> 00:17:35.829 wasn't it? That's what it sounds like you know 00:17:35.829 --> 00:17:41.730 early on in like 1906 the Navy was complaining 00:17:41.730 --> 00:17:44.809 about how chaotic it was and a lot of people 00:17:44.809 --> 00:17:50.910 were actually you know jamming or not jamming 00:17:50.910 --> 00:17:54.769 but interfering with Navy signals and broadcast 00:17:54.890 --> 00:17:57.589 And so there was a lot of frustration on the 00:17:57.589 --> 00:18:00.769 Navy's part. In 1906, they called for some sort 00:18:00.769 --> 00:18:05.549 of regulation and the Radio Act of 1912. So it 00:18:05.549 --> 00:18:08.450 took six years before Congress. And I don't know 00:18:08.450 --> 00:18:11.349 what went on in those intervening years. You 00:18:11.349 --> 00:18:13.109 know, it's easy to just say, well, you know, 00:18:13.210 --> 00:18:16.509 Congress took too long.
