The ham rig was set up 00:29:25.630 --> 00:29:29.710 in my father's office and every other night or 00:29:29.710 --> 00:29:32.569 so that was sort of the way we sat down and had 00:29:32.569 --> 00:29:35.289 long talks with grandpa was with our ham rig. 00:29:36.029 --> 00:29:41.289 And so I grew up with ham as a common tool of 00:29:41.289 --> 00:29:46.690 the household. And so by the time I flew, my 00:29:46.690 --> 00:29:50.970 father had already taken his, well in fact the 00:29:50.970 --> 00:29:56.710 first, ham radio set up to space aboard STS -9, 00:29:56.750 --> 00:29:59.970 the ninth launch of the space shuttle. And that 00:29:59.970 --> 00:30:02.869 was the first time an astronaut in space spoke 00:30:02.869 --> 00:30:06.710 to the general public directly. And as you obviously 00:30:06.710 --> 00:30:13.430 know, ham radio operators around the globe could 00:30:13.430 --> 00:30:15.930 speak with my dad, including, remember, some 00:30:15.930 --> 00:30:18.089 of his favorites were people like King Hussein 00:30:18.089 --> 00:30:21.700 of Jordan, the previous King of Jordan. I was 00:30:21.700 --> 00:30:25.059 a big ham and we had a chance to speak directly 00:30:25.059 --> 00:30:29.700 from space with him. When I began to put together 00:30:29.700 --> 00:30:32.859 the plan for my own space flight, I was going 00:30:32.859 --> 00:30:37.359 to be flying 25 years almost to the day from 00:30:37.359 --> 00:30:43.259 my father's shuttle flight. I knew that as his 00:30:43.259 --> 00:30:47.859 son and on such a good milestone, I would be 00:30:47.859 --> 00:30:53.420 remiss if I did not also not only take ham radios 00:30:53.420 --> 00:30:56.220 or operate ham radios when I was on board, but 00:30:56.220 --> 00:30:59.799 try to kind of push it up a notch from the status 00:30:59.799 --> 00:31:04.539 quo. And as many of the hams out there who do 00:31:04.539 --> 00:31:09.059 some contacts with either the ISS or satellites, 00:31:10.359 --> 00:31:12.900 you probably know or some of them may know there's 00:31:12.900 --> 00:31:15.180 actually a couple of radios that have been on 00:31:15.180 --> 00:31:17.019 board the International Space Station for many, 00:31:17.019 --> 00:31:20.279 many years. and it's not uncommon for astronauts 00:31:20.279 --> 00:31:23.500 and cosmonauts to use those radios. And so the 00:31:23.500 --> 00:31:26.400 addition that I did is I took up slow -scan television. 00:31:27.279 --> 00:31:31.000 And so I took up a handheld microphone addition 00:31:31.000 --> 00:31:35.680 that has a slow -scan TV device in it. And that 00:31:35.680 --> 00:31:38.920 way when I was doing other experiments and so 00:31:38.920 --> 00:31:44.900 I couldn't be at the radio myself, I would hook 00:31:44.900 --> 00:31:47.970 up the slow -scan television device and I could 00:31:47.970 --> 00:31:50.910 leave it at a window sort of automatically taking 00:31:50.910 --> 00:31:53.250 a picture every couple of minutes and transmitting 00:31:53.250 --> 00:31:55.230 it down and taking a picture again and transmitting 00:31:55.230 --> 00:32:00.049 it down. Therefore, the radio would be in use 00:32:00.049 --> 00:32:05.150 as close to 24 -7 as I could and people could 00:32:05.150 --> 00:32:07.349 get, even if there wasn't somebody live to talk 00:32:07.349 --> 00:32:09.569 to, they could get an echo, kind of a selfie 00:32:09.569 --> 00:32:11.349 portrait of themselves from the International 00:32:11.349 --> 00:32:15.740 Space Station while I was up there. But I have 00:32:15.740 --> 00:32:17.279 to tell you, one of the other things I did that 00:32:17.279 --> 00:32:22.660 I had good fun with was because I was doing the 00:32:22.660 --> 00:32:25.960 slow scan TV activities and I had a laptop in 00:32:25.960 --> 00:32:29.039 the loop as well, it also meant that the day 00:32:29.039 --> 00:32:31.079 I arrived on the station as I was just getting 00:32:31.079 --> 00:32:35.599 all the gear set up, I brought a folder full 00:32:35.599 --> 00:32:39.200 of images, of pre -selected images that I could 00:32:39.200 --> 00:32:41.980 transmit down for the first few orbits around 00:32:41.980 --> 00:32:46.740 the Earth. that I personally had fun with where 00:32:46.740 --> 00:32:51.480 I sent down images of either test patterns from 00:32:51.480 --> 00:32:53.279 like the old fashioned television test patterns 00:32:53.279 --> 00:32:58.480 or a variety of eye tests and then some kind 00:32:58.480 --> 00:33:03.740 of comical pieces like, you know, pictures of 00:33:03.740 --> 00:33:10.589 a site of ham. or pictures of my dad speaking 00:33:10.589 --> 00:33:13.289 from his hammer to a board the shuttle. So in 00:33:13.289 --> 00:33:15.329 any case, I had a great time setting it up, I 00:33:15.329 --> 00:33:19.289 had a great time doing it. But some of the most 00:33:19.289 --> 00:33:24.250 interesting things that I remember from operating 00:33:24.250 --> 00:33:26.609 in Ham was not only just the great conversations 00:33:26.609 --> 00:33:29.809 I had with people truly all over the globe, but 00:33:29.809 --> 00:33:35.819 also how impressed I was with the community when 00:33:35.819 --> 00:33:38.339 I would do things like, it might be for the crew, 00:33:38.440 --> 00:33:40.140 it might have been two or three o 'clock in the 00:33:40.140 --> 00:33:42.920 morning, let's call it.
