They were advanced level and 00:11:18.090 --> 00:11:21.690 definitely as I share I got bit by the bug of 00:11:21.690 --> 00:11:25.190 amateur radio at that point. They helped me out 00:11:25.190 --> 00:11:29.929 and guided me towards trying to pass that or 00:11:29.929 --> 00:11:33.960 be prepared for my novice. and I ended up studying, 00:11:34.500 --> 00:11:37.720 I passed the written, but I did not pass the 00:11:37.720 --> 00:11:41.159 code portion back then. I had the cassette tape, 00:11:41.399 --> 00:11:44.419 I was a teenager in high school playing sports, 00:11:44.860 --> 00:11:48.580 and I just obviously did not dedicate enough 00:11:48.580 --> 00:11:55.399 time to the CW portion. And that is when the 00:11:55.399 --> 00:11:59.940 no code technician first came out. I was looking 00:11:59.940 --> 00:12:02.179 at that, figuring that maybe I could just jam 00:12:02.179 --> 00:12:04.500 studying in on it, but at that point in time, 00:12:04.940 --> 00:12:08.059 it was kind of frowned upon for my ham being 00:12:08.059 --> 00:12:12.659 a no -coater. So I actually, with that feeling 00:12:12.659 --> 00:12:16.539 of some pressure, I just stepped out of it and 00:12:16.539 --> 00:12:20.600 stepped away from it. And then my wife and I 00:12:20.600 --> 00:12:24.379 had the privilege of making it to EAA, the Experimental 00:12:24.379 --> 00:12:26.759 Aircraft Association, been wanting to go there 00:12:26.759 --> 00:12:30.039 my entire life and finally made it by having 00:12:30.039 --> 00:12:33.820 the boys. And that was in the summer of 2018. 00:12:34.539 --> 00:12:39.840 And at EAA, they have this amazing area for all 00:12:39.840 --> 00:12:42.799 the youth that show up there to go and explore 00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:46.039 and learn and just have a blast. It's called 00:12:46.039 --> 00:12:49.840 KidVenture. And we ended up spending an amazing 00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:54.389 day at KidVenture at EAA. And while we were there 00:12:54.389 --> 00:12:57.330 waiting to or walking towards one of the other 00:12:57.330 --> 00:13:02.830 buildings, I saw this old building. It was a 00:13:02.830 --> 00:13:04.990 solid wooden structure. And I'm like, wow, that 00:13:04.990 --> 00:13:07.970 just looks like an interesting building. And 00:13:07.970 --> 00:13:11.889 so I got closer and was invited in to come take 00:13:11.889 --> 00:13:15.470 a peek. And it turned out to be an old ham shack 00:13:15.470 --> 00:13:20.659 that was about 50, 60, 70 years old. And it was 00:13:20.659 --> 00:13:23.480 still in excellent condition. But what was really 00:13:23.480 --> 00:13:26.960 cool is it felt like walking into a time machine 00:13:26.960 --> 00:13:30.659 because they had equipment that dated back to 00:13:30.659 --> 00:13:36.059 those yester decades. And it was very neat seeing 00:13:36.059 --> 00:13:41.590 the old maps and old QSL cards. you know, old 00:13:41.590 --> 00:13:44.929 school amateur radio and I just started looking 00:13:44.929 --> 00:13:48.929 at that and I remembered what captivated me when 00:13:48.929 --> 00:13:51.830 I was young and started talking with the guys 00:13:51.830 --> 00:13:55.450 and just had a great conversation. Made sure 00:13:55.450 --> 00:13:58.889 to bring Blake and Ryan in there and made sure 00:13:58.889 --> 00:14:01.009 that they were listening and looking and enjoying 00:14:01.009 --> 00:14:07.019 and when we walked out I just had that thought 00:14:07.019 --> 00:14:10.019 because of knowing what a ham fest was. I'm like, 00:14:10.019 --> 00:14:16.379 I've got to find a ham fest. And later after 00:14:16.379 --> 00:14:19.120 we left, I got home and I jumped on the computer 00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:23.559 and I was able to find Huntsville Ham Fest. So 00:14:23.559 --> 00:14:29.700 our oldest son, he's a student. He's now going 00:14:29.700 --> 00:14:33.100 to be attending Tennessee Tech. He'll be a junior 00:14:33.100 --> 00:14:38.500 in engineering. And so it was a nice boys, dad 00:14:38.500 --> 00:14:42.039 and the boys day away. And I said, hey, we're 00:14:42.039 --> 00:14:44.080 going to go down to this thing called the ham 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:45.980 fest. And afterwards, we happened to speak to 00:15:42.309 --> 00:15:48.470 an amazing woman, Carol Berry, and she was so 00:15:48.470 --> 00:15:51.389 friendly and so encouraging, and she encouraged 00:15:51.389 --> 00:15:54.529 us to not only get our license, but she said, 00:15:54.929 --> 00:15:59.110 don't stop studying until you get your general. 00:15:59.720 --> 00:16:02.419 So I will just conclude this part with saying 00:16:02.419 --> 00:16:07.419 that we walked away from there.
