Well, first off, they 00:08:09.480 --> 00:08:13.519 should be prepared for not only their well -being, 00:08:13.540 --> 00:08:16.939 but their family. You can't help someone if you're 00:08:16.939 --> 00:08:20.480 distracted by the goings on in our city, Kansas. 00:08:21.079 --> 00:08:23.879 So prepare locally to take care of yourself. 00:08:24.620 --> 00:08:28.639 Then prepare your station to talk to Bobby and 00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:32.529 other people doing disaster communications. Locally and 00:09:54.919 --> 00:09:59.639 statewide and regionally and nationwide, emergency 00:09:59.639 --> 00:10:04.500 managers in those three zones have adapted virtual 00:10:04.500 --> 00:10:10.340 operations, such as I just finished a deployment 00:10:10.340 --> 00:10:14.240 to the virtual Pacific Northwest working COVID 00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:18.940 plans. So there you have the one example of how 00:10:18.940 --> 00:10:22.019 things have changed. Yes, you need to have boots 00:10:22.019 --> 00:10:26.669 on turf. giving shots to people, but the planning 00:10:26.669 --> 00:10:29.169 section doesn't have to be necessarily boots 00:10:29.169 --> 00:10:33.370 on turf. They can be virtual, planning the various 00:10:33.370 --> 00:10:39.370 operations. Going into deeper, someone living 00:10:39.370 --> 00:10:43.629 in a hurricane zone should have a plan, a disaster 00:10:43.629 --> 00:10:50.110 plan, for when they have to evacuate from a hurricane, 00:10:50.509 --> 00:10:52.549 where are you gonna go, how are you gonna live. 00:10:52.759 --> 00:10:58.039 Do you have 72 hours stock of food, supplies, 00:10:58.259 --> 00:11:02.200 medicine to get you through? And I say 72 hours 00:11:02.200 --> 00:11:07.200 rarely. Do you need more than 72 hours? I mean, 30 storms 00:12:49.679 --> 00:12:55.899 in one season. I thought 2005 was 28, was plenty. 00:12:57.059 --> 00:13:01.879 But right now, a few weeks ago, there was some 00:13:01.879 --> 00:13:05.740 updates as far as from the National Hurricane 00:13:05.740 --> 00:13:09.830 Center. of changing their yearly average. Right 00:13:09.830 --> 00:13:11.370 now, they're going to start going by the yearly 00:13:11.370 --> 00:13:16.490 average, going from 1991 to 2020, with an average 00:13:16.490 --> 00:13:19.990 total name storms of 14, seven of those being 00:13:19.990 --> 00:13:22.929 hurricanes, with three of those becoming a category 00:13:22.929 --> 00:13:27.809 three or stronger. On April 8th, Dr. Philip Glaxback 00:13:27.809 --> 00:13:31.870 out at Colorado State made his first prediction 00:13:31.870 --> 00:13:35.690 for this season, calling for another active season. 00:13:35.929 --> 00:13:38.789 calling for 17 named storms, eight to become 00:13:38.789 --> 00:13:41.509 hurricanes, with four of those becoming a cat 00:13:41.509 --> 00:13:45.049 three or stronger. Tropical Storm Risk, which 00:13:45.049 --> 00:13:48.850 I think is a group over in Europe on the April 00:13:48.850 --> 00:13:52.830 13th, has basically got the same forecast, 18, 00:13:53.169 --> 00:13:55.409 excuse me, 17, eight, but they're calling for 00:13:55.409 --> 00:13:58.830 three, category three or stronger hurricanes. 00:13:59.889 --> 00:14:04.809 NOAA will be making their first... predictions 00:14:04.809 --> 00:14:07.809 a little bit later on this month, but bottom 00:14:07.809 --> 00:14:12.149 line, whether we have 17, five or even one, just 00:14:12.149 --> 00:14:15.409 remember, we go back to why it was in 1992, there 00:14:15.409 --> 00:14:18.169 was only one landfall and hurricane that season. 00:14:18.730 --> 00:14:22.169 That was Andrew. That was more than plenty. So, 00:14:23.289 --> 00:14:27.889 and I know Julio can attest to that cause he 00:14:27.889 --> 00:14:33.179 got hammered. So yes, you know, We always like 00:14:33.179 --> 00:14:36.519 to say, hope for the best, but prayer for the 00:14:36.519 --> 00:14:39.960 worst. Yeah. And Julio, I think you were going 00:14:39.960 --> 00:14:42.759 to chime in there. So go ahead. You're there 00:14:42.759 --> 00:14:46.059 in Miami. So you're probably hearing this on 00:14:46.059 --> 00:14:50.299 the news every night. Oh, you bet Neil. And Bobby 00:14:50.299 --> 00:14:53.460 was very accurate saying that it only takes one 00:14:53.460 --> 00:14:57.139 bad hurricane to ruin your year. And mine was 00:14:57.139 --> 00:14:59.759 1992 hurricane Andrew that ripped half the roof 00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:04.720 off. my house and about 300 ,000 other homes 00:15:04.720 --> 00:15:08.539 in South Florida suffered major damage. I mean, 00:15:08.539 --> 00:15:12.919 it took more than six months for me to rebuild 00:15:12.919 --> 00:15:16.860 my house and many places never really recovered. 00:15:17.980 --> 00:15:20.759 But anyway, I just want to do a real quick recap 00:15:20.759 --> 00:15:26.200 on what WX4NHC did for 2020 with the Hurricane 00:15:26.200 --> 00:15:30.580 Center. And 2020 was the nightmare. scenario 00:15:30.580 --> 00:15:34.519 that no one could imagine, a pandemic worse than 00:15:34.519 --> 00:15:37.460 the last 100 years, and then a record -breaking 00:15:37.460 --> 00:15:41.360 hurricane season with the 30 named storms, 13 00:15:41.360 --> 00:15:44.960 hurricanes, six major hurricanes, and 12 of them 00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:50.159 actually hitting the U .S. mainland. So it was 00:15:50.159 --> 00:15:54.500 the first year ever in 40 years that we worked 00:15:54.500 --> 00:15:58.120 hurricanes and we were not inside the hurricane 00:15:58.120 --> 00:16:05.320 center. That was a complete change that didn't 00:16:05.320 --> 00:16:07.779 surprise everybody because we had COVID since 00:16:07.779 --> 00:16:14.019 March, but we had to retool every which way we 00:16:14.019 --> 00:16:17.559 could to not only gather reports, but how to 00:16:17.559 --> 00:16:21.720 report and submit them in for review by the hurricane 00:16:21.720 --> 00:16:26.059 specialists there. So we set up this whole network 00:16:26.059 --> 00:16:29.759 with the Hurricane Center's help. And let me 00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:34.519 tell you, our director, Ken Graham, WX4KEX, is 00:16:34.519 --> 00:16:37.100 fantastic. And he understands ham radio very 00:16:37.100 --> 00:16:41.299 well. And he has his Yezu handheld right there 00:16:41.299 --> 00:16:45.100 on his desk in the hurricane center. But we work 00:16:45.100 --> 00:16:49.659 virtually from our home stations the entire season. 00:16:50.220 --> 00:16:54.000 And we actually did very well. And we got reports, 00:16:54.240 --> 00:16:56.320 hundreds of reports through all the hurricanes. 00:16:57.980 --> 00:17:02.440 And sometimes we had old WX4NHC operators that 00:17:02.440 --> 00:17:06.380 have moved out of Miami area, so they thought 00:17:06.380 --> 00:17:08.819 they could never help again. And they were working 00:17:08.819 --> 00:17:13.299 from the Virgin Islands as far north as Delaware. 00:17:13.859 --> 00:17:17.259 And they were able to relay the stations through, 00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:20.099 you know, from the Hurricane WatchNet, from the 00:17:20.099 --> 00:17:23.299 VYP HurricaneNet, and even Echolink, and all 00:17:23.299 --> 00:17:29.180 these other modes all the way through. So with 00:17:29.180 --> 00:17:34.660 no surprise, 2021 season, because COVID is still 00:17:34.660 --> 00:17:37.319 active, very active here in South Florida, we're 00:17:37.319 --> 00:17:40.339 going to be working remotely again. Back to you, 00:17:40.420 --> 00:17:50.500 Neil. Yeah, it makes you improvise. And I guess 00:17:50.500 --> 00:17:56.009 that's a good thing for preparation. It's been a while It'll be 30 years 00:19:12.710 --> 00:19:17.539 in August 19th When we get to August 19th, 2021, 00:19:17.779 --> 00:19:20.700 it'll be 30 years since the last landfalling 00:19:20.700 --> 00:19:22.420 hurricane in southern New England, which was 00:19:22.420 --> 00:19:26.279 Hurricane Bob in 1991. And that name was retired 00:19:26.279 --> 00:19:29.319 because of the amount of damage that it did. 00:19:29.720 --> 00:19:32.640 Right, actually, where I live, I had not moved 00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:35.960 here yet, but in New Bedford, Massachusetts. 00:19:37.230 --> 00:19:39.809 It was near the landfall point.
