She was an Auschwitz survivor. After 00:05:45.620 --> 00:05:48.600 surviving that concentration camp, she moved 00:05:48.600 --> 00:05:52.100 as far away as she could. And so she moved to 00:05:52.100 --> 00:05:55.259 Australia. She passed away this week. She was 00:05:55.259 --> 00:05:59.620 originally from Czechoslovakia. And during World 00:05:59.620 --> 00:06:03.939 War II, she was sent with her family to Auschwitz. 00:06:05.319 --> 00:06:09.579 And before they got there, Yvonne's Her father 00:06:09.579 --> 00:06:12.540 specifically said to her, I don't know where 00:06:12.540 --> 00:06:16.079 we're going, but I know we're not going on holiday. 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:21.120 Promise me this, Yvonne, that you will survive. 00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:27.360 And the young girl told her father, I will survive. 00:06:29.379 --> 00:06:32.100 The sad reality is that she was the only one 00:06:32.100 --> 00:06:35.180 of the family that did survive that death camp. 00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:38.920 Her story is well known. And so instead of being put 00:06:53.399 --> 00:06:59.899 to death, she was put to work. If you've ever 00:06:59.899 --> 00:07:02.699 been to Auschwitz, you know there is an awful 00:07:02.699 --> 00:07:05.920 sign that hangs over the entrance to the death 00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:12.560 camp. It says, work sets you free. It's a wrought 00:07:12.560 --> 00:07:15.980 iron sign. And of all of the horrific things 00:07:15.980 --> 00:07:18.279 that you see when you go into that concentration 00:07:18.279 --> 00:07:20.939 camp, you honestly don't have to set foot inside 00:07:20.939 --> 00:07:23.920 before you have a sense of terror, before you 00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:26.100 have a sense of the evil and the cruelty that 00:07:26.100 --> 00:07:28.540 was done. With a sign like that, you don't have 00:07:28.540 --> 00:07:31.699 to go any further. Because the sad reality of 00:07:31.699 --> 00:07:35.649 that place is work didn't set anybody free. Work 00:07:35.649 --> 00:07:40.250 didn't set anybody free there. The Lord saved 00:07:40.250 --> 00:07:46.430 her, and then they put her to work. I don't want 00:07:46.430 --> 00:07:49.850 to make too much of a connection here, but it 00:07:49.850 --> 00:07:52.529 should not go unnoticed that with a slogan like 00:07:52.529 --> 00:07:55.910 that, work sets you free, that appeals to us. 00:07:56.089 --> 00:07:58.310 It doesn't just appeal to Nazis. It doesn't just 00:07:58.310 --> 00:08:01.910 appeal to the Germans. It appeals to us, too. 00:08:02.120 --> 00:08:04.740 Work sets you free. We like how that sounds, 00:08:04.899 --> 00:08:08.839 right? We're Americans. We like to work. We like people who do 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:23.920 that. That's called success in our minds. Work 00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:27.920 sets you free. But what if there was another 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:32.190 way? What if we didn't trust the sign hanging 00:08:32.190 --> 00:08:35.029 over the entrance of a death camp? What if work 00:08:35.029 --> 00:08:37.990 was the thing that you did after you were free? 00:08:38.429 --> 00:08:43.809 What if freedom set you to work? That's what 00:08:43.809 --> 00:08:46.710 I want us to see today in this passage, that 00:08:46.710 --> 00:08:49.789 we are freed by the Lord from our slavery to 00:08:49.789 --> 00:08:53.809 sin in order then to do God's will. We're talking 00:08:53.809 --> 00:08:57.970 about the construction of the temple. Solomon's 00:08:57.970 --> 00:09:02.250 temple was the biggest, grandest, most expensive 00:09:02.250 --> 00:09:09.809 project of all time at the time. It really was. 00:09:11.009 --> 00:09:14.870 And yet, Solomon and these Jewish leaders within 00:09:14.870 --> 00:09:16.970 the text, they don't accomplish the building 00:09:16.970 --> 00:09:20.529 of this temple on their own. They were set free 00:09:20.529 --> 00:09:23.289 to do it. They set their minds and their hearts 00:09:23.289 --> 00:09:26.450 on the Lord. And with the Lord, they're able 00:09:26.450 --> 00:09:31.529 to construct this. Temple. Chapter 22, we see 00:09:31.529 --> 00:09:35.309 mostly this is a private conversation between 00:09:35.309 --> 00:09:38.549 David and Solomon. And so let's start there with 00:09:38.549 --> 00:09:42.850 David and Solomon. This chapter reminds us of 00:09:42.850 --> 00:09:45.809 something we've already looked at, about how 00:09:45.809 --> 00:09:48.909 David really, really wanted to build the temple 00:09:48.909 --> 00:09:52.169 for the Lord, right? He wanted to build a house 00:09:52.169 --> 00:09:54.230 for the Lord. David said, I've got a house. Why 00:09:54.230 --> 00:09:58.000 don't you, Lord, have a house? Well, here we 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:00.860 see that David would not be the one to build 00:10:00.860 --> 00:10:05.960 that temple. Instead, the Bible says that Solomon 00:10:05.960 --> 00:10:10.500 would. You'll remember David had many sons. Three 00:10:10.500 --> 00:10:14.899 of them actually died before David does. We haven't 00:10:14.899 --> 00:10:17.399 spent a lot of time on Absalom, but you'll remember 00:10:17.399 --> 00:10:20.039 that David feuded with his son Absalom for a 00:10:20.039 --> 00:10:23.649 very long time. We might even say... that perhaps 00:10:23.649 --> 00:10:26.250 David's greatest battles were actually fought 00:10:26.250 --> 00:10:29.990 against his own son. But here you have another 00:10:29.990 --> 00:10:33.509 son, and this is Solomon. And within our text 00:10:33.509 --> 00:10:36.070 here, Solomon is really young. We don't know 00:10:36.070 --> 00:10:39.269 exactly how old he is, but probably a teenager. 00:10:39.710 --> 00:10:42.409 But we know that David was zealous to build the 00:10:42.409 --> 00:10:46.309 temple, but he wouldn't be the one to do it. 00:10:46.509 --> 00:10:51.139 Look in verse 8. The word of the Lord came to 00:10:51.139 --> 00:10:55.120 me saying, you have shed much blood and have 00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:58.799 waged great wars. You shall not build a house 00:10:58.799 --> 00:11:02.240 to my name because you have shed so much blood 00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:06.299 before me on the earth. So David's not going 00:11:06.299 --> 00:11:11.100 to be the one to do it. How come? It's actually 00:11:11.100 --> 00:11:15.659 a bit of a tricky spot in scripture. There are 00:11:15.659 --> 00:11:18.340 at least two possibilities of interpretation, 00:11:18.539 --> 00:11:21.700 maybe more. Some have looked at David's shedding 00:11:21.700 --> 00:11:25.259 of blood, and they have said, well, this usually 00:11:25.259 --> 00:11:28.919 assumes that it's a statement of guilt, saying, 00:11:29.139 --> 00:11:32.759 David, we know what you've done with Uriah. We 00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:35.460 know about that whole episode with Bathsheba. 00:11:36.120 --> 00:11:39.600 And so because of that shed blood, you will not 00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:45.659 be the one to build the temple. However, While 00:11:45.659 --> 00:11:48.440 it may be true, we also recognize that David 00:11:48.440 --> 00:11:53.159 is called in many places a man of war. In many 00:11:53.159 --> 00:11:56.440 of those wars, the Lord actually commanded him 00:11:56.440 --> 00:11:59.679 to fight and to lead. And so that have led some 00:11:59.679 --> 00:12:02.559 to say this has nothing to do with Bathsheba 00:12:02.559 --> 00:12:06.100 and with Uriah. This has to do with the very 00:12:06.100 --> 00:12:08.259 fact that David has shed a lot of blood as a 00:12:08.259 --> 00:12:12.159 warrior and perhaps his hands are unclean from 00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:14.820 the shedding of blood. To be honest with you, 00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:18.799 I think both of them might be in play here. We 00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:21.820 do know that David sinned greatly. And we do 00:12:21.820 --> 00:12:24.159 know from last Sunday that David sinned with 00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:27.159 Uriah and with Bathsheba. That whole episode 00:12:27.159 --> 00:12:30.659 had ongoing consequences. The Lord told him there 00:12:30.659 --> 00:12:34.120 would be consequences for this, even as he truly 00:12:34.120 --> 00:12:38.200 repented. David goes through so much in his life. 00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:41.259 He goes through horrible family trauma. He doesn't 00:12:41.259 --> 00:12:45.600 handle it all well. Through it all though, he 00:12:45.600 --> 00:12:48.620 makes preparation so that Joshua, or not Joshua, 00:12:48.820 --> 00:12:52.779 so that Solomon can build the temple. And I reference 00:12:52.779 --> 00:12:55.240 Joshua because as we're reading this, you might 00:12:55.240 --> 00:12:57.759 get a sense, hey, I feel like I've heard some 00:12:57.759 --> 00:13:01.120 of this before. And the reason that you feel 00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:03.620 that way is because I think this text is encouraging 00:13:03.620 --> 00:13:06.659 us to think about somebody else who is doing 00:13:06.659 --> 00:13:09.100 something incredible for the Lord, but didn't 00:13:09.100 --> 00:13:11.940 get to finish it. We're supposed to think of 00:13:11.940 --> 00:13:16.240 Moses and Joshua here. You remember Moses leading 00:13:16.240 --> 00:13:19.299 the people, the Israelites, out of Egypt and 00:13:19.299 --> 00:13:22.039 going on the way to the promised land, but he 00:13:22.039 --> 00:13:24.980 doesn't get to take the people all the way there, 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:29.700 does he? Instead, he has to hand the reins over 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:35.059 to Joshua. There's several similarities then, 00:13:35.100 --> 00:13:38.799 both. Joshua and Solomon have a commissioning 00:13:38.799 --> 00:13:41.360 service. And just as Moses was not able to finish 00:13:41.360 --> 00:13:43.679 what he started, David doesn't get to build the 00:13:43.679 --> 00:13:46.460 temple. But you can see the headway, the work 00:13:46.460 --> 00:13:49.759 that he puts into it to ensure that Solomon will 00:13:49.759 --> 00:13:52.639 be successful. Look at all of these materials 00:13:52.639 --> 00:13:57.960 here. Gold and silver, bronze, iron, timber, 00:13:58.139 --> 00:14:02.090 and stone. I'm not much of a mathematician, but 00:14:02.090 --> 00:14:05.629 I've read some who have calculated the numbers, 00:14:06.090 --> 00:14:09.590 especially with the gold and the silver. As you 00:14:09.590 --> 00:14:12.470 look at these numbers and you calculate them 00:14:12.470 --> 00:14:16.629 today, we would be talking this temple, just 00:14:16.629 --> 00:14:20.509 in those precious materials alone, hundreds of 00:14:20.509 --> 00:14:23.509 billions of dollars would have gone into this 00:14:23.509 --> 00:14:27.429 temple. Hundreds of billions of dollars into 00:14:27.429 --> 00:14:31.879 this This temple was to be the most magnificent 00:14:31.879 --> 00:14:35.940 structure around. This temple was to be so grand 00:14:35.940 --> 00:14:38.620 that people from out of town, from way far away 00:14:38.620 --> 00:14:40.720 would be like, hey, have you heard about that 00:14:40.720 --> 00:14:43.019 temple that they're building there? Have you 00:14:43.019 --> 00:14:44.980 heard about this guy, Solomon, and this temple? 00:14:47.059 --> 00:14:51.779 But David doesn't get to build it. Instead, Solomon 00:14:51.779 --> 00:14:55.039 does. But we see that as much as David wants 00:14:55.039 --> 00:14:58.519 this and as much as David does, Who really provides 00:14:58.519 --> 00:15:04.039 the materials? The Lord provides those. And not 00:15:04.039 --> 00:15:08.980 only that, but the Lord also provides the workers, 00:15:09.220 --> 00:15:14.100 right? A great, a great number of workers at 00:15:14.100 --> 00:15:16.980 work on this temple. This is the locals. These 00:15:16.980 --> 00:15:20.600 are the Jebusites, which tells us something else 00:15:20.600 --> 00:15:24.980 important about the temple. Is that from the 00:15:24.980 --> 00:15:29.559 start, with this temple, God was already including 00:15:29.559 --> 00:15:35.460 Gentiles here. The temple is built on Gentile 00:15:35.460 --> 00:15:39.759 land. Again, the Jebusites. This temple is built 00:15:39.759 --> 00:15:44.559 by Gentiles. God is already including others 00:15:44.559 --> 00:15:51.419 in this thing. And so, yes, we are to think about 00:15:51.419 --> 00:15:54.690 Moses and Joshua. Because all along what God 00:15:54.690 --> 00:15:58.409 is doing is preparing redemptive history. As 00:15:58.409 --> 00:16:01.090 the Israelites were saved from Egypt, He saves 00:16:01.090 --> 00:16:04.169 them, and we are supposed, as we read that episode, 00:16:04.850 --> 00:16:07.889 to think of Christ and what He has done, about 00:16:07.889 --> 00:16:10.730 how Christ saves us from our sin. As the Israelites 00:16:10.730 --> 00:16:15.690 were saved from being enslaved to the Egyptians, 00:16:15.830 --> 00:16:19.750 so we are saved by Christ from our enslavement 00:16:19.750 --> 00:16:26.159 to sin. Thirdly, though, of these connections, 00:16:26.320 --> 00:16:31.779 look at the language here. Be not afraid, don't 00:16:31.779 --> 00:16:34.799 be dismayed, strong and courageous. Who does 00:16:34.799 --> 00:16:39.879 this sound like? Again, Moses to Joshua. This 00:16:39.879 --> 00:16:42.419 is God telling Moses who's telling Joshua these 00:16:42.419 --> 00:16:44.659 things. You can read this in Deuteronomy 31, 00:16:44.720 --> 00:16:48.730 I think verse 6, and Joshua 1, verse 9. So if 00:16:48.730 --> 00:16:51.070 you're feeling a little bit of Moses and Joshua 00:16:51.070 --> 00:16:54.450 going on, that's intentional. And so what David 00:16:54.450 --> 00:16:58.850 does is he passes these good words onto his son, 00:16:59.289 --> 00:17:03.269 Solomon. But if I can add even more history to 00:17:03.269 --> 00:17:07.690 this, you should think of Moses, you should think 00:17:07.690 --> 00:17:11.410 of Joshua, you might even see beyond them to 00:17:11.410 --> 00:17:15.269 Abraham. Because where is the temple being constructed? 00:17:16.309 --> 00:17:19.920 I haven't mentioned it yet. But I'm gonna read 00:17:19.920 --> 00:17:27.059 to you 2nd Chronicles 3 1 2nd Chronicles 3 1 00:17:27.059 --> 00:17:33.059 Then Solomon began to build the house of the 00:17:33.059 --> 00:17:38.180 Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah Where the Lord 00:17:38.180 --> 00:17:41.420 had appeared to David his father At the place 00:17:41.420 --> 00:17:44.319 that David had appointed on the threshing floor 00:17:44.319 --> 00:17:48.529 of Ornon the Jebusite If you know your Bibles 00:17:48.529 --> 00:17:53.450 well, what else happened on Mount Moriah? You 00:17:53.450 --> 00:17:55.910 know that this was the location that Abraham 00:17:55.910 --> 00:18:00.250 took his son Isaac to offer him as a sacrifice. 00:18:00.569 --> 00:18:04.250 And just before Abraham could plunge that knife 00:18:04.250 --> 00:18:07.990 into his son, the Lord said, stop. And he provided 00:18:07.990 --> 00:18:12.750 a ram to be the sacrifice. You know what else 00:18:12.750 --> 00:18:18.120 happened not too far from Mount Moriah? Mount 00:18:18.120 --> 00:18:22.640 Calvary, Golgotha. Moriah is not far from the 00:18:22.640 --> 00:18:25.960 location where Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice, 00:18:26.640 --> 00:18:29.960 was crucified. And so you can see within this 00:18:29.960 --> 00:18:32.359 text that sounds like it's about materials and 00:18:32.359 --> 00:18:34.400 sounds like it's a father's encouragement to 00:18:34.400 --> 00:18:37.640 his son. Why does he use this young man, 00:18:53.210 --> 00:18:57.549 this son of David? Look in verse 9. Behold, a 00:18:57.549 --> 00:19:00.650 son shall be born to you who shall be a man of 00:19:00.650 --> 00:19:03.910 rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding 00:19:03.910 --> 00:19:08.150 enemies, for his name shall be Solomon. Yvonne Engelmann that I referenced at the 00:28:28.740 --> 00:28:32.519 beginning, she was freed from that death camp 00:28:32.519 --> 00:28:38.720 and she went on to serve every single week in 00:28:38.720 --> 00:28:42.799 a Holocaust museum in Australia. That's how she 00:28:42.799 --> 00:28:46.680 went about service. But we, have the Holy Spirit. 00:28:47.119 --> 00:28:50.180 We've believed in Jesus. The Lord provides strength and 00:30:03.900 --> 00:30:07.700 so we shouldn't fear. And the Lord promises his 00:30:07.700 --> 00:30:10.900 presence as we build the church. And so church, 00:30:11.160 --> 00:30:16.119 arise. You have been freed to serve. Let us make 00:30:16.119 --> 00:30:19.579 disciples and go out to build the church to the 00:30:19.579 --> 00:30:22.339 glory of God. Let's pray.
