I know that we're kind of parachuting 00:00:17.300 --> 00:00:21.000 in to this location and it may have been a while 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.920 since we were in Isaiah, so just a little bit 00:00:24.920 --> 00:00:28.059 of where we are within this text before I read 00:00:28.059 --> 00:00:33.229 and pray. Within this portion of Isaiah, there 00:00:33.229 --> 00:00:36.990 are several different songs that are composed, 00:00:36.990 --> 00:00:40.649 if you will, by the prophet Isaiah. And they're 00:00:40.649 --> 00:00:42.850 all very good, they're very special, but the 00:00:42.850 --> 00:00:46.350 one that we look at tonight, I might say is the 00:00:46.350 --> 00:00:50.909 kind of climactic song within Isaiah. This text 00:00:50.909 --> 00:00:53.990 here has everything to do with what we are doing 00:00:53.990 --> 00:00:59.049 here tonight. This is all about the suffering 00:00:59.049 --> 00:01:03.000 servant. And so let's pay attention to the reading 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:07.180 of God's holy inspired word from Isaiah 52 beginning 00:01:07.180 --> 00:01:12.920 in verse 13. Behold, my servant shall act wisely. 00:01:13.780 --> 00:01:17.439 He shall be high and lifted up and shall be exalted. 00:01:18.219 --> 00:01:21.060 As many were astonished at you, his appearance 00:01:21.060 --> 00:01:24.799 was so marred beyond human semblance and his 00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:27.760 form beyond that of the children of mankind. 00:01:27.920 --> 00:01:31.900 So shall he sprinkle many nations. Charles Haddon Spurgeon said of this 00:04:57.540 --> 00:05:01.180 text that it is the holy of holies of divine 00:05:01.180 --> 00:05:04.800 writ. He said when you read this text you are 00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:09.959 treading on holy ground. You've heard this text, 00:05:10.600 --> 00:05:14.500 but still you might be asking how so? How is 00:05:14.500 --> 00:05:16.759 this such an important text? What was Spurgeon 00:05:16.759 --> 00:05:19.259 getting at when he said that? If you really pay 00:05:19.259 --> 00:05:22.319 attention to this text what you realize is that 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:27.699 Isaiah has this to say, as if he is at Golgotha. 00:05:27.980 --> 00:05:32.019 It is as if Jesus is there in front of Isaiah 00:05:32.019 --> 00:05:35.759 being crucified. And yet, if you look at the 00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:37.759 nature of the text, the way that this is written, 00:05:37.819 --> 00:05:40.800 it's all very interesting. Because you probably 00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:46.279 noticed that the tense of the verbs, it's in 00:05:46.279 --> 00:05:50.180 the past tense, isn't it? And yet the prophet, 00:05:50.439 --> 00:05:53.720 is writing with the crucifixion of Jesus still 00:05:53.720 --> 00:05:57.959 hundreds of years in the future. He's writing 00:05:57.959 --> 00:06:00.180 in the past tense about something that has not 00:06:00.180 --> 00:06:02.980 yet happened. And so the way that this reads 00:06:02.980 --> 00:06:06.279 is almost as if Isaiah is at the very end of 00:06:06.279 --> 00:06:10.300 time reflecting on what might be just the most 00:06:10.300 --> 00:06:17.480 pivotal moment in all of human history. And it's 00:06:17.480 --> 00:06:21.610 so accurate, isn't it? It's so precise if you 00:06:21.610 --> 00:06:23.970 are a Christian tonight There's no way that you 00:06:23.970 --> 00:06:27.149 can walk away from this text and not know this 00:06:27.149 --> 00:06:31.550 is about your Savior And yet people do deny this 00:06:31.550 --> 00:06:35.209 text. It's as Paul says in Romans chapter 1 people 00:06:35.209 --> 00:06:42.269 really do suppress the truth But there's no suppressing 00:06:42.269 --> 00:06:47.250 this because Isaiah writes this he portrays this 00:06:47.250 --> 00:06:52.199 just as clearly as Matthew and Mark and Luke 00:06:52.199 --> 00:06:56.379 and John by this chapter this passage has been 00:06:56.379 --> 00:07:01.540 called the fifth gospel because it's about Christ 00:07:01.540 --> 00:07:06.180 alone. Tonight I want you to get just one main 00:07:06.180 --> 00:07:11.579 point that Jesus is the suffering servant for 00:07:11.579 --> 00:07:14.980 you. He's the suffering servant for you. But 00:07:14.980 --> 00:07:17.740 two ways in which we see this, Jesus was wounded 00:07:17.740 --> 00:07:23.040 for us and Jesus is declared guilty for us. Look 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:28.540 at 52 14. It says his appearance was so marred 00:07:28.540 --> 00:07:33.180 beyond human semblance. What this means is that 00:07:33.180 --> 00:07:37.300 Jesus was quite literally beaten beyond recognition. 00:07:37.819 --> 00:07:39.800 You've perhaps heard of the instrument that was 00:07:39.800 --> 00:07:44.259 used upon Jesus. some sort of a whip with a sharp 00:07:44.259 --> 00:07:49.939 bone and metal in it, that when it was hit upon 00:07:49.939 --> 00:07:52.920 his flesh, it would tear away flesh and it would 00:07:52.920 --> 00:07:57.480 expose organs. In addition to that, when that 00:07:57.480 --> 00:08:00.740 instrument was used, oftentimes the person was 00:08:00.740 --> 00:08:04.540 tied with their hands above their head. Sometimes 00:08:04.540 --> 00:08:10.639 those strikes could be fatal. know your Bible 00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:13.199 well, you might have read that a person could 00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:17.720 only be hit 39 times according to Jewish law. 00:08:18.060 --> 00:08:20.379 That's in Deuteronomy, but Paul also speaks of 00:08:20.379 --> 00:08:23.579 it in 2 Corinthians. Only 39 times, but here's 00:08:23.579 --> 00:08:26.540 the thing about that. Who is the one who is actually 00:08:26.540 --> 00:08:30.459 beating Jesus? It's not the Jews. It's the Roman 00:08:30.459 --> 00:08:34.820 soldiers. And I hardly, hardly believe they cared 00:08:34.820 --> 00:08:40.059 very much about what Jewish law had to say. You 00:08:40.059 --> 00:08:44.519 see in verse five, his wounds, his stripes. This 00:08:44.519 --> 00:08:48.879 in some ways is more graphic than even the gospels. 00:08:49.340 --> 00:08:51.480 And yet it's not the only place where we see 00:08:51.480 --> 00:08:54.740 this sort of thing. You don't have to turn there, 00:08:54.940 --> 00:08:59.220 but listen to these words from Psalm 22, 16 through 00:08:59.220 --> 00:09:03.279 18. They have pierced my hands and feet. I can 00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:06.779 count all my bones. They stare and gloat over 00:09:06.779 --> 00:09:09.360 me. They divide my garments among them, and for 00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:12.419 my clothing they cast lots. Doesn't this sound 00:09:12.419 --> 00:09:14.440 like Jesus to you? Of course it does, because 00:09:14.440 --> 00:09:17.379 that same Psalm is the one that Jesus utters 00:09:17.379 --> 00:09:19.679 on the cross. For you know these words on the 00:09:19.679 --> 00:09:23.700 cross. Jesus said, my God, my God, why have you 00:09:23.700 --> 00:09:30.059 forsaken me? These prophecies, they're so accurate, 00:09:30.139 --> 00:09:33.009 for we know. that Jesus was fastened to the cross 00:09:33.009 --> 00:09:36.509 by nails in his hands and his feet. We know that 00:09:36.509 --> 00:09:39.210 a spear was thrust through his side after he 00:09:39.210 --> 00:09:46.330 gave up his spirit. Look in verse five. He was 00:09:46.330 --> 00:09:50.610 pierced for our transgressions. Friends, when 00:09:50.610 --> 00:09:54.289 the text uses this word, your word here in English, 00:09:55.049 --> 00:09:57.750 pierce, this is actually using one of the most 00:09:57.750 --> 00:10:01.950 violent terms. the Old Testament. This is what 00:10:01.950 --> 00:10:06.970 was done to our Lord Jesus Christ. This is, as 00:10:06.970 --> 00:10:10.370 some have said, the death blow when He was pierced 00:10:10.370 --> 00:10:13.830 for our transgressions and He was crushed, destroyed 00:10:13.830 --> 00:10:19.549 for us. And we know that crucifixion is perhaps, 00:10:20.049 --> 00:10:23.149 no it is, the most torturous way to die. I'm 00:10:23.149 --> 00:10:27.129 not medical, but I do know that Jesus experienced 00:10:27.129 --> 00:10:31.629 there on the cross unexplainable pain, dizziness, 00:10:31.909 --> 00:10:35.889 fever, cramping, tendons throbbing, exposed organs 00:10:35.889 --> 00:10:40.769 bleeding, shock, asphyxia, thirst and dehydration. 00:10:40.929 --> 00:10:43.669 Anybody else on that cross would have surely 00:10:43.669 --> 00:10:46.509 sought the sweet relief of death, but it was 00:10:46.509 --> 00:10:49.750 not finished until Jesus said, it is finished. 00:10:51.490 --> 00:10:54.779 Jesus underwent that for you. That's what you 00:10:54.779 --> 00:10:58.360 need to know tonight. Jesus went through that 00:10:58.360 --> 00:11:02.259 for you. And it seems so clear to us, doesn't 00:11:02.259 --> 00:11:07.879 it? And yet, look at verse three. It says that 00:11:07.879 --> 00:11:10.159 we esteemed him not. What this is getting at, 00:11:10.200 --> 00:11:12.820 what Isaiah is getting at, is that people didn't 00:11:12.820 --> 00:11:16.240 believe. This prophecy in Isaiah's day, people 00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:18.879 didn't believe it in Jesus's day, and people 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:22.360 don't believe that now. This is about unbelief. 00:11:22.379 --> 00:11:25.580 And you would think in Jesus's time, Messianic 00:11:25.580 --> 00:11:28.580 expectation would have been very high, and yet 00:11:28.580 --> 00:11:33.220 people reject Jesus. They did, and they still 00:11:33.220 --> 00:11:37.899 do. People today say things like, well, I do 00:11:37.899 --> 00:11:42.059 believe that Jesus was a good man. And I do believe 00:11:42.059 --> 00:11:44.840 that Jesus was a good teacher. And I even believe 00:11:44.840 --> 00:11:47.779 that Jesus was a good prophet. Friends, he is 00:11:47.779 --> 00:11:50.840 certainly those things, but he is so much more. 00:11:51.080 --> 00:11:53.919 He's the only Messiah, the only one who could 00:11:53.919 --> 00:11:57.559 truly say, no greater love has this than someone 00:11:57.559 --> 00:12:00.759 lay down his life for his friends. And yet the 00:12:00.759 --> 00:12:04.139 laying down of his life is really only the beginning. 00:12:04.960 --> 00:12:07.480 Because not only was he wounded for you, not 00:12:07.480 --> 00:12:11.059 only was he killed for you, He was declared guilty 00:12:11.059 --> 00:12:17.879 for you. Nothing gets people more riled up it 00:12:17.879 --> 00:12:20.500 seems these days than innocent punishment and 00:12:20.500 --> 00:12:22.980 yet this is what Jesus submitted himself to. 00:12:23.220 --> 00:12:29.059 He who committed no sin became sin for us. His 00:12:29.059 --> 00:12:34.220 suffering then is vicarious. Because people sin, 00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:37.220 Christ as mediator was punished. And because 00:12:37.220 --> 00:12:41.240 Christ as mediator was punished, we get his righteousness. 00:12:41.879 --> 00:12:45.259 Perhaps you've wondered, how does Jesus' dying 00:12:45.259 --> 00:12:47.759 have anything to do with the removal of my sin? 00:12:47.840 --> 00:12:50.539 How does this work? Well, look in verses 10 and 00:12:50.539 --> 00:12:55.820 11. Verse 10, his righteousness is ours because 00:12:55.820 --> 00:13:00.009 his soul makes offering for guilt. Verse 11, 00:13:00.250 --> 00:13:03.169 many to be accounted righteous as he bears their 00:13:03.169 --> 00:13:05.590 iniquities. This is how atonement works. You 00:13:05.590 --> 00:13:08.250 remember the Old Testament sacrifices that had 00:13:08.250 --> 00:13:12.889 to be offered again and again and again to make 00:13:12.889 --> 00:13:16.779 atonement. But with Jesus it doesn't have to 00:13:16.779 --> 00:13:19.559 happen again and again and again because he is 00:13:19.559 --> 00:13:22.840 the perfect sacrifice He takes our sins upon 00:13:22.840 --> 00:13:25.659 himself and a transaction takes place where we 00:13:25.659 --> 00:13:29.940 who believe in him are credited with his righteousness 00:13:29.940 --> 00:13:36.460 We get peace with God we get new hearts that 00:13:36.460 --> 00:13:41.720 are not stained by sin But understand even as 00:13:41.720 --> 00:13:46.399 Jesus did this for us He did it for us, meaning 00:13:46.399 --> 00:13:50.659 that they did not take his life because he laid 00:13:50.659 --> 00:13:55.059 it down. Jesus laid his life down. Look in verses 00:13:55.059 --> 00:14:02.080 four, six, and 10. You see the phrase, smitten 00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:07.940 by whom? By God. Verse six, the Lord has laid 00:14:07.940 --> 00:14:11.710 on him the iniquity of us all. Verse 10. It was 00:14:11.710 --> 00:14:15.570 the will of the Lord to crush him. And so he 00:14:15.570 --> 00:14:18.269 was wounded, and he was rendered guilty for you, 00:14:18.269 --> 00:14:21.509 and it was the only way. Jesus said it best. 00:14:22.009 --> 00:14:25.289 I am the way and the truth and the life. No one 00:14:25.289 --> 00:14:28.190 comes to the Father but through me. Christ is 00:14:28.190 --> 00:14:31.450 the only one who could make atonement as a perfect 00:14:31.450 --> 00:14:34.950 sacrifice. And so the Father offered up the Son 00:14:34.950 --> 00:14:40.169 to save his people. But you don't have to take 00:14:40.169 --> 00:14:46.809 my word for it. Because Peter in his sermon in 00:14:46.809 --> 00:14:50.230 Acts 2 speaks of this perfect plan to save sinners. 00:14:50.850 --> 00:14:55.210 Acts 2 23, this Jesus delivered up according 00:14:55.210 --> 00:14:58.730 to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, 00:14:59.269 --> 00:15:03.350 you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless 00:15:03.350 --> 00:15:07.929 men. Why would the Father offer up the Son in 00:15:07.929 --> 00:15:15.519 this way? Why? Friends, it's for his glory. It 00:15:15.519 --> 00:15:19.100 is for his glory. Do you remember the high priestly 00:15:19.100 --> 00:15:23.159 prayer of Jesus in John 17? He begins his prayer 00:15:23.159 --> 00:15:27.379 like this, Father, the hour has come. Glorify 00:15:27.379 --> 00:15:31.320 your Son that the Son may glorify you. The purpose 00:15:31.320 --> 00:15:36.419 for the Son is to give glory to the Father. this 00:15:36.419 --> 00:15:39.659 is also communicated within our text tonight 00:15:39.659 --> 00:15:43.919 because how does verse 13 go in chapter 52 behold 00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:47.059 my servant shall act wisely he shall be high 00:15:47.059 --> 00:15:49.659 and lifted up and shall be exalted but also look 00:15:49.659 --> 00:15:53.500 at the end of the pericope because there towards 00:15:53.500 --> 00:15:57.600 the end we also see this in verse 12 of 53 therefore 00:15:57.600 --> 00:16:00.340 I will divide him a portion with the many and 00:16:00.340 --> 00:16:04.000 he shall divide the spoil with the strong the 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:07.820 picture here is that as Jesus is crucified on 00:16:07.820 --> 00:16:11.720 the cross, we who are in Christ are victorious 00:16:11.720 --> 00:16:17.919 with Christ. You have victory with Jesus. He 00:16:17.919 --> 00:16:21.019 did this for us such that as Jesus is raised, 00:16:21.100 --> 00:16:25.639 one day we too shall be raised to be with God. 00:16:28.379 --> 00:16:32.759 And that's about glorification. That's really 00:16:32.759 --> 00:16:35.940 what we're doing here tonight. He will lift us up to be with God. 00:17:18.589 --> 00:17:22.269 But in the here and now, what is the point? What's 00:17:22.269 --> 00:17:25.470 the point of what we are doing here? If you know 00:17:25.470 --> 00:17:27.730 you're short of catechism, it's to glorify God 00:17:27.730 --> 00:17:30.730 and to enjoy Him forever. And yet people who 00:17:30.730 --> 00:17:34.490 deny who Jesus is, they don't live for God because 00:17:34.490 --> 00:17:37.509 they don't see a need for God. And they don't 00:17:37.509 --> 00:17:39.930 see a need for the righteousness of Christ because 00:17:39.930 --> 00:17:42.150 they think they are righteous in their own eyes. 00:17:42.329 --> 00:17:44.549 They don't need to glorify God because they're 00:17:44.549 --> 00:17:50.410 glorifying themselves. Friends, Jesus died so 00:17:50.410 --> 00:17:58.960 that we could glorify God. Tonight I pray that 00:17:58.960 --> 00:18:01.420 you would be strengthened in your faith in the 00:18:01.420 --> 00:18:05.660 suffering servant, that his death and his resurrection 00:18:05.660 --> 00:18:08.900 would bring you hope, but I'm also aware there 00:18:08.900 --> 00:18:11.200 could be those here who were hearing this for 00:18:11.200 --> 00:18:13.259 the first time who've never thought about Isaiah 00:18:13.259 --> 00:18:17.490 52 and 50. But think about it, who else could 00:18:17.490 --> 00:18:20.789 Isaiah possibly be talking about? Who else in 00:18:20.789 --> 00:18:24.869 all of history could be afflicted with wounds 00:18:24.869 --> 00:18:28.990 and we get healing from it? Who else in all of 00:18:28.990 --> 00:18:31.369 history could be numbered with the transgressors 00:18:31.369 --> 00:18:34.750 and yet bear the sins of many to make intercession? 00:18:36.150 --> 00:18:42.569 Who else, I ask? Well, just in case you're still 00:18:42.569 --> 00:18:48.349 unsure. I'll land the plane with Acts chapter 00:18:48.349 --> 00:18:54.430 8. You might remember this episode, the Ethiopian 00:18:54.430 --> 00:18:59.450 eunuch and Philip. And the eunuch is traveling 00:18:59.450 --> 00:19:02.609 and he's reading something.
