This week, we're going to be talking about 00:00:24.890 --> 00:00:28.690 the lake of fire and kind of what does it actually 00:00:28.690 --> 00:00:33.420 mean? because the lake of fire is not the triumph 00:00:33.420 --> 00:00:40.240 of wrath. It is the final defeat of death. Last 00:00:40.240 --> 00:00:42.460 week, we kind of explored the meaning of judgment 00:00:42.460 --> 00:00:46.399 and saw that biblical judgment is not revenge, 00:00:47.159 --> 00:00:51.719 but more along the lines of restoration. So a 00:00:51.719 --> 00:00:53.700 thought to wrestle with before we kick this one 00:00:53.700 --> 00:00:56.340 off is what if the lake of fire is not about 00:00:56.340 --> 00:01:01.000 God tormenting humanity? but about God destroying 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:05.540 death itself. Just a thought to consider as we 00:01:05.540 --> 00:01:08.920 begin to dive into this. And so as we do this, 00:01:09.140 --> 00:01:12.079 I want you to think about the rethinking end 00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:15.400 time series that we did and remember what we 00:01:15.400 --> 00:01:18.859 learned about the book of Revelation. That it 00:01:18.859 --> 00:01:22.180 is full of symbols when it talks about beasts, 00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:26.439 dragons, horns, crowns. cities, all these different 00:01:26.439 --> 00:01:30.359 things, there is a lot of symbolic language. 00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:34.900 And the problem is if we read symbolic language 00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:39.379 as literal language, we misunderstand the message 00:01:39.379 --> 00:01:45.620 entirely. And so if you think back to the revelation 00:01:45.620 --> 00:01:48.180 discussion about what do these symbols mean, 00:01:48.200 --> 00:01:50.379 if you remember, we discussed and you can go 00:01:50.379 --> 00:01:54.540 back and listen to this. We discussed beast equals 00:01:54.540 --> 00:01:58.519 empires, horns would equal rulers, fire would 00:01:58.519 --> 00:02:01.719 equal judgment, and different things of that 00:02:01.719 --> 00:02:05.000 nature. But if you look at Revelation chapter 00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:09.159 20 verse 14, it says this, then death and the 00:02:09.159 --> 00:02:12.560 realm of the dead were cast into the lake of 00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:16.840 fire. for the lake of fire is the second death. 00:02:16.860 --> 00:02:18.740 So I want you to notice something about this 00:02:18.740 --> 00:02:21.580 is that death and Hades is that word there. One 00:02:21.580 --> 00:02:24.099 of those words for hell. The realm of the dead 00:02:24.099 --> 00:02:28.759 is what it is. Death and the realm of the dead 00:02:28.759 --> 00:02:33.479 are both thrown into the fire. So now we have 00:02:33.479 --> 00:02:36.699 to ask ourselves a very real and genuine question. 00:02:37.319 --> 00:02:40.939 Are death and Hades people? And the answer to 00:02:40.939 --> 00:02:44.280 that question is no they are enemies they are 00:02:44.280 --> 00:02:48.219 concepts they are forces the lake of fire is 00:02:48.219 --> 00:02:52.879 about destroying what destroys humanity think 00:02:52.879 --> 00:02:56.939 about that let's look at um first corinthians 00:02:56.939 --> 00:03:00.960 chapter 15 verse 26 and it says and the last 00:03:00.960 --> 00:03:05.000 enemy to be subdued and eliminated is death itself 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:10.199 so the final enemy is not people the final enemy 00:03:10.199 --> 00:03:14.520 is death All right, we can look at Isaiah chapter 00:03:14.520 --> 00:03:17.539 25 verse 8 in the passion translation. It says 00:03:17.539 --> 00:03:20.879 it is the gloom of death He will swallow it up 00:03:20.879 --> 00:03:24.659 in victory forever and God Lord Yahweh will wipe 00:03:24.659 --> 00:03:30.180 away every tear from every face I'm just looking 00:03:30.180 --> 00:03:33.840 here to see there's some notes on that verse 00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:36.120 I don't believe any of those are important for 00:03:36.120 --> 00:03:38.620 this conversation at the moment, but so let's 00:03:38.620 --> 00:03:41.349 read that again It is the gloom of death, he 00:03:41.349 --> 00:03:44.509 will swallow it up in victory forever and God, 00:03:44.629 --> 00:03:48.629 Lord Yahweh will wipe away every tear from every 00:03:48.629 --> 00:03:51.610 face. So the lake of fire is the image of death 00:03:51.610 --> 00:03:56.090 that is being swallowed. It has absolute zero 00:03:56.090 --> 00:04:00.770 to do with human endlessly burning, with humanity 00:04:00.770 --> 00:04:03.960 burning. the wicked burn none of that it has 00:04:03.960 --> 00:04:07.400 nothing to do with humans endlessly burning it 00:04:07.400 --> 00:04:11.219 is death that is ending all right let's look 00:04:11.219 --> 00:04:13.120 at some other scriptures here let's look at first 00:04:13.120 --> 00:04:15.379 corinthians chapter 15 and we're going to read 00:04:15.379 --> 00:04:22.079 verses 54 through 58 and it says this then when 00:04:22.079 --> 00:04:24.699 our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies 00:04:24.699 --> 00:04:27.600 that will never die This scripture will be fulfilled. 00:04:28.139 --> 00:04:30.699 Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where 00:04:30.699 --> 00:04:33.120 is your victory? O death, where is your sting? 00:04:33.800 --> 00:04:36.839 For sin is the sting that results in death, and 00:04:36.839 --> 00:04:41.839 the law gives sin its power. But thank God. He 00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:44.899 gives us victory over sin and death through our 00:04:44.899 --> 00:04:48.060 Lord Jesus Christ. So my dear brothers and sisters, 00:04:48.220 --> 00:04:52.699 be strong and be movable. Always work enthusiastically 00:04:52.699 --> 00:04:55.480 for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do 00:04:55.480 --> 00:04:59.139 for the Lord is ever useless." I'm going to read 00:04:59.139 --> 00:05:03.300 those same verses in the mirror paraphrase. It 00:05:03.300 --> 00:05:06.660 says, Your victory is not a maybe because of 00:05:06.660 --> 00:05:10.439 the magnanimous doing of Jesus Christ. It is 00:05:10.439 --> 00:05:14.129 a given. For this reason, you can afford to be 00:05:14.129 --> 00:05:18.209 absolutely settled and rock solid and face persuasion 00:05:18.209 --> 00:05:21.649 and always ready to go beyond where you would 00:05:21.649 --> 00:05:25.170 have gone before. Your doing now is inspired 00:05:25.170 --> 00:05:31.129 by your knowing that you are in Him. If His resurrection 00:05:31.129 --> 00:05:34.129 is yours, then His victory over sin and death 00:05:34.129 --> 00:05:38.189 is equally yours. You can walk in that victory 00:06:01.009 --> 00:06:06.889 just as much. And that's good news. Here's another 00:06:06.889 --> 00:06:08.629 long scripture we're going to read. We're going 00:06:08.629 --> 00:06:12.350 to read Hebrews chapter 2. I'm going to start 00:06:12.350 --> 00:06:15.810 in verse 7, and we're going to read several verses 00:06:15.810 --> 00:06:18.189 here, but I think it's important as we're talking 00:06:18.189 --> 00:06:21.730 about this. It says, It seems that man briefly 00:06:21.730 --> 00:06:24.910 descended to a less elevated place than Elohim, 00:06:25.329 --> 00:06:28.230 yet he is crowned with God's own glory and dignity 00:06:28.230 --> 00:06:30.709 and appointed in a position of authority over 00:06:30.709 --> 00:06:34.480 all the works of his hands. God's intention was 00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:38.379 that human life should rule the planet. He subjected 00:06:38.379 --> 00:06:42.660 everything without exception to His control. 00:06:43.319 --> 00:06:46.279 Yet looking at the human race, it does not seem 00:06:46.279 --> 00:06:50.500 that way at all. Verse 9, But what is apparent 00:06:50.500 --> 00:06:53.879 is Jesus. Let us then consider Him in such a 00:06:53.879 --> 00:06:58.339 way that we may clearly perceive what God is 00:06:58.339 --> 00:07:02.199 saying to mankind in Him. In the death that he 00:07:02.199 --> 00:07:05.019 suffered, he briefly descended to a seemingly 00:07:05.019 --> 00:07:08.439 less elevated place in Elohim in order to taste 00:07:08.439 --> 00:07:12.019 the death of the entire human race. And in doing 00:07:12.019 --> 00:07:15.399 so, to fulfill the grace of God and to be crowned 00:07:15.399 --> 00:07:18.759 again as a man representing all of mankind with 00:07:18.759 --> 00:07:23.660 glory and highly esteemed honor. He towers in 00:07:23.660 --> 00:07:27.100 conspicuous prominence far above all things. 00:07:27.500 --> 00:07:31.310 He is worthier author and their conclusion. I will 00:08:14.970 --> 00:08:17.529 celebrate you in song. I will rest my confident 00:08:17.529 --> 00:08:20.769 trust in him. I am surrounded by the children 00:08:20.769 --> 00:08:23.990 whose God has given whose which God has given 00:08:23.990 --> 00:08:28.959 me. I am one of them. This is why it is so relevant to understand 00:09:05.610 --> 00:09:08.549 that Jesus did not arrive on the planet in a 00:09:08.549 --> 00:09:12.009 celestial form. He is the seed of Abraham. He 00:09:12.009 --> 00:09:14.809 therefore completely assimilated every detail 00:09:14.809 --> 00:09:18.450 of this human family so that as chief priests 00:09:18.450 --> 00:09:21.250 standing face to face before God, his compassion 00:09:21.250 --> 00:09:24.330 and unwavering faith would prevail effectively 00:09:24.330 --> 00:09:27.809 over the lies that they believed about themselves. 00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:32.220 having fully accomplished their at -one -ment. 00:09:32.919 --> 00:09:36.059 He experienced mankind's temptation with the 00:09:36.059 --> 00:09:38.679 same intensity and under the same scrutiny and 00:09:38.679 --> 00:09:44.620 powerfully represents them with immediate effect. 00:09:45.299 --> 00:09:50.259 So Christ defeated all of this. Whatever He did, we were mystically 00:10:05.750 --> 00:10:09.110 included in the finished work of the person of 00:10:09.110 --> 00:10:12.289 Christ. So when He defeated death, He was not 00:10:12.289 --> 00:10:16.470 just doing this for us. He was doing this as 00:10:16.470 --> 00:10:19.110 you and I. So what is the point of this? Death 00:10:19.110 --> 00:10:22.190 has effectively been defeated and it's going 00:10:22.190 --> 00:10:27.110 to be destroyed in the lake of fire. That's important 00:10:27.110 --> 00:10:31.230 for us to understand that death and Hades again 00:10:31.230 --> 00:10:35.029 Hades often translated into hell is going to 00:10:35.029 --> 00:10:39.769 be destroyed in this lake of fire All right, 00:10:39.769 --> 00:10:41.690 let's move on. Let's look at Revelation chapter 00:10:41.690 --> 00:10:46.370 21 And we're just going to read verses 1 through 00:10:46.370 --> 00:10:50.590 5 It says then I saw a new heaven a new earth 00:10:50.590 --> 00:10:52.889 for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared 00:10:52.889 --> 00:10:55.470 and the sea was also gone and I saw the holy 00:10:55.470 --> 00:10:58.330 city the new Jerusalem Coming down from God out 00:10:58.330 --> 00:11:00.590 of heaven like a bride dressed for her husband 00:11:00.590 --> 00:11:03.330 I heard a loud shout from the throne saying look 00:11:03.330 --> 00:11:06.549 God's home is now among his people He will live 00:11:06.549 --> 00:11:09.529 with them and they will be his people God himself 00:11:09.529 --> 00:11:12.970 will be with them He will wipe away every tear 00:11:12.970 --> 00:11:15.610 from their eyes and there will be no more death 00:11:15.610 --> 00:11:19.080 or sorrow or crying or pain all these things 00:11:19.080 --> 00:11:21.639 are gone forever. Verse three 00:11:32.419 --> 00:11:34.360 in the mirror says in a glorious announcement 00:11:34.360 --> 00:11:38.320 was Harold, Harold, excuse me, heralded. out 00:11:38.320 --> 00:11:41.840 of the throne behold God's tabernacle is with 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:44.940 humanity he has taken up permanent residence 00:11:44.940 --> 00:11:47.559 in human skin to be with them and the closest 00:11:47.559 --> 00:11:51.740 possible associate of oneness they are his own 00:11:51.740 --> 00:11:56.360 possession his tribe and he is their God inseparably 00:11:56.360 --> 00:11:59.000 pay attention to the language here I love this 00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:03.659 inseparably entwined with them so after the lake 00:12:03.659 --> 00:12:07.779 of fire in Revelation chapter 20 we have this 00:12:07.779 --> 00:12:11.559 in Revelation chapter 21 and what appears but 00:12:11.559 --> 00:12:16.360 a new creation not eternal chaos it's not endless 00:12:16.360 --> 00:12:22.039 torment but this is renewal so fire is not the 00:12:22.039 --> 00:12:28.100 end of the story restoration is okay let's look 00:12:28.100 --> 00:12:32.700 at this Revelation chapter 20 verse 14 says then 00:12:32.700 --> 00:12:35.080 death and Hades the realm of the dead were cast 00:12:35.080 --> 00:12:37.019 into the lake of fire for the lake of fire is 00:12:37.019 --> 00:12:39.600 the second death so let's talk let's take that 00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:43.899 verse again and go look at what is death ask 00:12:43.899 --> 00:12:48.299 yourself what is death death is simply the separation 00:12:48.299 --> 00:12:54.440 from life death is destroyed in the fire pay 00:12:54.440 --> 00:12:58.720 attention to the language it's destroyed why 00:12:58.720 --> 00:13:03.080 does that matter because so many people were 00:13:03.080 --> 00:13:06.440 taught to fear this lake of fire. But what if 00:13:06.440 --> 00:13:10.000 the lake of fire is not the terror of humanity, 00:13:10.440 --> 00:13:15.039 but it's the triumph of God's victory? What if 00:13:15.039 --> 00:13:19.720 the fire that you feared is actually the fire 00:13:19.720 --> 00:13:26.100 that removes that which is destroying you? That's 00:13:26.100 --> 00:13:28.620 something for us really to wrestle with and to 00:13:28.620 --> 00:13:32.149 consider. when we're discussing this lake of 00:13:32.149 --> 00:13:37.549 fire because it's in this lake of fire that death 00:13:37.549 --> 00:13:42.769 in hades is destroyed so okay here's another 00:13:42.769 --> 00:13:46.690 question just to consider if hell is supposed 00:13:46.690 --> 00:13:53.320 to be eternal because again The word Hades go 00:13:53.320 --> 00:13:57.399 back to the beginning of this series and we discussed 00:13:57.399 --> 00:14:02.080 Hades, Sheol, Gehenna, and Tartarus. All four 00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:04.659 of those words translated into our English word 00:14:04.659 --> 00:14:10.740 hell. Hades and Sheol were... Let's see, let 00:14:10.740 --> 00:14:12.860 me think here. Sheol would have been the Hebrew 00:14:12.860 --> 00:14:16.340 version. Hades would be its sister word, I guess, 00:14:16.340 --> 00:14:19.179 in the Greek. Both of them simply meaning the 00:14:19.179 --> 00:14:25.019 realm of the dead. But if that place is destroyed 00:14:25.019 --> 00:14:29.100 in this lake of fire, how can hell now be eternal 00:14:29.100 --> 00:14:33.980 if it is in fact destroyed with death in this 00:14:33.980 --> 00:14:38.779 lake of fire? Again, don't check your brain at 00:14:38.779 --> 00:14:41.960 the door. Learn to wrestle with these questions. 00:14:42.660 --> 00:14:45.059 Again, not important that you come to the same 00:14:45.059 --> 00:14:48.440 conclusion I have. My purpose here is to bring you a different 00:14:52.100 --> 00:14:55.460 viewpoint, a fresh set of eyes, if you will, 00:14:55.899 --> 00:14:58.639 and to give you hope in the situation and not 00:14:58.639 --> 00:15:01.399 to be what we've done in the Western world and 00:15:01.399 --> 00:15:06.340 use this as a manipulative terror tactic to get 00:15:06.340 --> 00:15:09.120 people to repeat a prayer so we can have more 00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:14.070 people praying the prayer. This is not supposed 00:15:14.070 --> 00:15:19.529 to be a manipulation game Again, if hell was 00:15:19.529 --> 00:15:23.110 as big a deal as we make it in the Western Church 00:15:23.110 --> 00:15:26.730 Then acts fails to do the job and quite frankly, 00:15:26.950 --> 00:15:32.610 so does the Christ so does Jesus Because he does 00:15:32.610 --> 00:15:35.950 you know, I've grew up hearing things I've grown 00:15:35.950 --> 00:15:39.110 up hearing things such as Jesus talked more about 00:15:39.110 --> 00:15:42.009 hell than he did anything and that simply not 00:15:42.090 --> 00:15:47.309 True. At all. Hear me very clearly. If you go 00:15:47.309 --> 00:15:52.490 and study this stuff, that is not his primary 00:15:52.490 --> 00:15:58.309 topic. So we have to stop and pause and learn 00:15:58.309 --> 00:16:01.309 to ask questions and wrestle with these thoughts. 00:16:01.690 --> 00:16:05.090 and really learn to have a more hopeful outlook 00:16:05.090 --> 00:16:09.169 in life and trust that the Holy Spirit is big 00:16:09.169 --> 00:16:11.809 enough to do what the Holy Spirit needs to accomplish. 00:16:13.090 --> 00:16:16.250 The Holy Spirit knows how to speak to you and 00:16:16.250 --> 00:16:24.169 I as one that is one with Him. And I will just let you wrestle which 00:17:08.210 --> 00:17:12.710 one had the greater impact. Something to really 00:17:12.710 --> 00:17:18.589 think about.
